Something is amiss at Maus Haus. Not just the mystery of an unsolved "suicide" which hangs over the old mansion, but something ominous in the present-day residence. When Qwilleran moves in to work on his new gastronomical assignment, strange things begin to happen. First it's a scream in the night, then a vanishing houseboy. But when his old girlfriend disappears, something has to be done. Qwilleran, Koko and Yum Yum set out to solve the mystery--and find a murderer!

Poor old Jim Qwilleran, everywhere he goes people are drinking in front of this recovering alcoholic. To make matters worse, early in this book his doctor puts him on a strict diet just before he gets assigned to cover the gourmet scene for the Daily Fluxion. Just as he really begins to feel sorry for himself he runs into an old flame at a party he is attending that is on his new beat. The party and the old flame are at the Maus House, something of a boarding house for the gourmet set. Since the house was built as an artist's conclave and must remain so to some extent, the new owner has kept the pottery going and brought in Joy Graham and her husband to run it. Joy is the reporter's old flame and his perspective brightens as soon as he sees her.

Soon however Joy disappears and her husband Dan claims she has left him and gone to Florida. Except for the fact that Joy had just told Qwilleran that she hates Florida the story is plausible enough but something just doesn't ring true to the ace reporter and he starts sniffing around. Soon there is another disappearance but no one takes Qwilleran's suspicions seriously and this book ends up reading like the disaster movies of the 1970's. The hero knows the dam is about to break but nobody will listen so he spends the entire movie trying to prove his point until the dam does break and everybody drowns. There are indeed a couple of drowning victims in this story but they may or may not have any connection to the mystery at hand.

The solution to the mystery becomes apparent early but Qwilleran, despite his suspicions, can't prove a thing. Again Koko rises to the occasion, this time on a typewriter and Yum Yum makes the collar. One sometimes wonders if these cats need Qwilleran for anything beyond food and water. You can also rest assured that these cats, unlike their human, will never swallow red herrings.

As is the norm for Lilian Jackson Braun's books, the characters and their often-odd behavior are the bread and butter of the story. And speaking of odd, I am happy to report that photographer Odd Bunsen makes a return in this book after being absent from the previous story. For a free meal Bunsen will help Qwilleran with almost anything and just like the rest of Jackson's characters and this book, Bunsen is witty, engaging and sometimes a little devious.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Braun has to Offer.......2005-02-18

"The Cat Who Saw Red" was my introduction to the "Cat Who" series way back when I was about 10 years old. To this day, I have no idea how that book ended up on my mother's shelf - my parents are not readers. But I'm sure glad it did - I've read every book in the series since!

Braun's work has been highly criticized lately for going drastically downhill, and I agree. That criticism is justified. To read "The Cat Who Saw Red" again reminds me of exactly from what great heights Braun has fallen.

The mystery, as others have said, is not that hard to figure out. But the characters are so rich, the writing so fluid, and the situation so compelling that one cannot put this book down. The way Jim Qwilleran interacts with those around him is just fabulous in this book. Unlike later "Cat Who" novels, he doesn't take himself seriously at all - and he can also be heartbreakingly vulnerable. Qwill's buddy Arch Riker is a treat in this book, too, witty and cranky at the same time.

I highly recommend this book as an introduction to the series, or as a re-read for longtime fans.

5 out of 5 stars The Cat Who Saw Red.......2005-01-17

This is my favorite Cat Who... mystery so far. Qwilleran, the newspaper man and his cats Koko and Yum-Yum solve another murder mystery. The setting takes place at the Maus Haus, the vintage apartment home where Qwilleran now lives. All types of odd characters live there, including Dan and Joy Graham. They are artists who make pottery by hand.

Qwilleran knew Joy from along time ago. They grew up together and were boyfriend and girlfriend. One night, after Qwilleran moved into the Maus House, Joy came to visit and told him of her miserable marriage. She wanted to leave her husband. That same night, she disappeared. Qwilleran did not believe the story about her moving to Miami. He did not trust her unsophisticated husband, Dan Graham. Qwilleran would not give up until he solved the mystery! Koko and Yum-Yum help to unravel the clues.

5 out of 5 stars Best of the early cat who books.......2004-05-04

The early "Cat Who" books have Jim Qwilleran as a middle-aged, impoverished, recovering alcoholic journalist barely hanging on at a newspaper in an un-named Middle West city. Later he moves north 400 miles to a little town and inherits a fortune. "The Cat Who Saw Red" is the last mystery novel that ties him to the gritty city, and it is the best of the city books--by a considerable margin.

Other readers have outlined and commented on the plot, so I will say only about it that the plot here is much better than in the previous city novels. It moves better and the outcome is more logical, more satisfying. But the author's forte is not plotting. It is in the remarkable characters, unusual without being grotesque (a fine line to walk), not the least of whom are Qwill's Siamese cats. To those who have read none of the series, it may sound just a little too cutesy, having prescient cats solve crimes, but the writer makes it work and work quite well.

The writer also excels in creating atmosphere, the city, the newspaper office, fancy and not so fancy restaurants and Maus Haus, a rather weird boarding house for people interested in food--and in pottery.

Like Dickens, Ms. Braun invents no astonishing plots. Her great strength is in making characters come to life in interesting settings. As in Dickens, characters and settings are sufficient.

5 out of 5 stars Nominated for a Edgar.......2004-03-25

This 4th book of the series, I understand, was nominated for an Edgar (as in Edgar Allen Poe), which is the mystery series equivalent of an Oscar. It deserves such recognition. First, it brought L.J.B. back after a long break from writing (for which fans are forever grateful). Second, it is a truly remarkable crime, probably one of the most unusual ones I've heard about apart from the C.S.I. television series. I still get chills thinking about that crime (I should stress it is not gory, unlike C.S.I., though it may be the "darkest" story in this mystery series)

This book does a fine job of fleshing out its primary characters and their current assignment: a curious neighborhood of artists. I was particularly delighted with the descriptions of the cats, so vivid as to create a vicarious cat lover experience for me(I'm allergic to cats, so the printed word is all I can handle). Of course, Koko, the Siamese cat with unusual abilities, steals the show.

If you are new to the "Cat Who..." series, this is an excellent starting point. The whole series is one big "can't put it down" pleasure read. Please keep in mind that the entire series is forever evolving, which in some ways is just like real life (and unlike some mystery series where everything resets between stories). So what you read in this book will have remarkable contrasts to books before and much later in the series, though the core elements remain in tact. The series of books divides into two time periods in the protagonist's life: Qwilleran as a reporter in the Big Cities, and later Qwilleran as a columnist in Moose County. The first group is urban, slightly gritty and darker in some ways, the second group is still edgy at times, but is more small-town cozy and much quirkier, in a hometown fashion, which really appeals to the fans. The dividing point for the series is the book "The Cat Who Played Brahms", which is therefore another good starting point. This one, "The Cat Who Saw Red" is in the first group.

5 out of 5 stars Not Just for Cat Lovers!.......1998-03-19

An expert story-teller, Lilian Jackson Braun pulls the reader into her Cat Who stories with the finese of Jim Qwilleran's two feline companions Koko and Yum Yum. Each story weaves mystery with deftly portrayed characters and cleverly detailed plots. No cardboard characters or loose ends in these books. Qwilleran is a reporter with a luxuriant mustache that frequently signals him when something peculiar is about to impact those around him. Murder, mystery, lies -- Qwilleran's sidekick Koko is there to help him solve all the riddles. (Yum Yum helps, too, but she often prefers to watch the two males bend their minds to the puzzles while she stalks bright shiny objects or flirts with Qwilleran's guests.) Any Cat Who book is a delight. And, best yet, it's not necessary to read them in order.

5 out of 5 stars KoKo and Yum Yum are the cats meow!.......1998-03-19

Lilian Jackson Braun's mystery series of "The Cat Who..." books are definately the cats meow, and a must read of any cat and mystery lover! This is a compilation of three of the early books from "The Cat Who" series. They are fast reads, the type of books that one can not put down! One thing I like about this series is that they focus on the same group of characters, which lends continuatity from one book to the next.

In "The Cat Who Saw Red" reporter Jim Qwilleran is given an assignment to work on a food column. While working on this assignment, Jim and his two Siamese cats, Koko and Yum Yum are surrounded by strange incidents, among them disappearance and murder! KoKo and Yum Yum goes about helping Jim solve the murders.

In "The Cat Who Plays Brahms", Jim Qwilleran and his two Siamese decides to get away from the big city and go to a lake house, belonging to a family friend. This is the book which explains how Jim inherits his fortune.

"The Cat Who Played Post Office" is the first book that actually details the City of Pickax and the various communities in Moose County. Jim is living in the K mansion and soon a murder takes place. KoKo goes right into action, and proceeds to *assist* Jim into solving the murder. I liked it that the continuation of this book was that the characters of Arch and Hixie have followed Qwill to live in Moose County.

By the continuation of characters from one book to the next, I have really found myself looking forward to each new book in this series. I highly recommend this book series!

5 out of 5 stars You'll love Moose County; 400 miles north of everywhere!.......1998-03-17

Don't make the mistake I did by reading The Cat Who Saw Red first. I love these books but although The Cat Who Saw Red got the most press and is listed first inside the cover pages of all the books from the series it gives away too much from the earlier works. Of course, if you aren't like me and enjoy a good series from the beginning they can be picked up at any point and are thoroughly enjoyable each and every one. You'll love sensible Jim Qwilleran who treats his siamese cats, Koko and Yum Yum, like pampered guests. And why not? They are instrumental in solving mysteries and deciding who can be trusted and who cannot.

                  1 out of 5 stars Not what I expected.......2007-10-01

I bought this book expecting it to be spiritual and some of the statements were, but they were not backed up with anything that relates to how the Indians incorporated those thoughts into THEIR daily lives. I just got an unrelated history lesson. For example, Feb. 10th-"To clothe a man falsley is to distress his spirit..." Then the next information on that page is about a Native Day in American History on "Feb 10th 1763 The French ceded the North Americans territory to England in the Treaty of Paris, ending the French and Indian War (1754-1763)." Now, what do the two have to do with each other? Or at least put something in about how Native Americans dress or something related to the spiritual quote of the day. The format bugged me. There is some good information, but very poorly organized.

5 out of 5 stars A Special Native American Daily Read & Meditation.......2006-11-03

For those of us who take the time to get up extra early, open our front doors, and listen to the birds calling as the sun is rising, this book is so helpful to start your day off just right. The Words of our Grandfathers remind us to live with our hearts and pay attention to the old ways in our every day lives.

The author, Terri Jean, has had the foresight to add in History notes to remind us of what heppened in the past, reminding us of seasonal thoughts, and so much more.

This book is dynamic and meditative. A worthwhile present for someone special who is a Native American.

                  4 out of 5 stars Good Book.......2006-06-01

Though the book is designed as a daily meditational, I read through the Red Road Ethics beginning to end. Full of wisdom, but I felt a couple of the quotes were inacurate (paraphrased).

5 out of 5 stars Native American treasure.......2006-03-27

When I bought this book I was waiting something difficult to read for but I was so surprised how wonderful and easy this book is! It gives me lots of hope and joy every morning when I read each day's part! IF you value these Native people's thoughts - this book is MUST to own!

                    Book Description

From Louisa May Alcott to Kate Douglas Wiggin, early-American writers found time to describe and prepare sumptuous dishes still cook-worthy today. Beginning with Bouillon for Parties and Germans and ending with Sauce aux Marrons, a Creole chestnut sauce served over broiled turkey chicks, this book presents the soup-to-nuts of eating in America more than a century ago.

                    Book Description

Do you own an old lamp? Are you wondering what it is, how it was originally used, how you can make it better, or how much it is worth? If so, this book is written for you! Easy to read and complete with a newly revised price guide, this book answers many of the basic questions confronting lamp collectors, from "Where do I look for a manufacturer's signature?" to "How do I distinguish reproductions from originals?" Using a combination of color photographs and catalog illustrations, here is a wealth of information for anyone interested in buying or selling old lighting. Included also is a discussion of restoration issues like rewiring, practical uses for fixtures originally made for gas or oil, and restoring and protecting metal finishes.

4 out of 5 stars Antique Lamp Buyer's Guide by Nadja Maril.......2007-03-14

A nice book to have to briefly educate yourself on many styles of late 19th and early 20th century lamps. Not so much a reference book as it is a book of education.

4 out of 5 stars Terrific photos but pretty skimpy on reference features.......2005-01-14

This book provides a good overview of vintage lamps (including both oil and electric) and some excellent photos of an assortment of these lamps. If you like lamps, it is a pleasant book to read because of the excellent photography and the fairly broad array of lamp styles found in the book. I was, however, disappointed that the author falls short in the basic research that collectors really need. The title says it is a guide for antique lamp buyers, but the book has not been particularly helpful to me when I have looked at buying different lamps. For example, look up Bradley & Hubbard's electric lamps in the index and it directs you to photos of a sconce made by B&H - no electric lamps. It tells you little about the company history, their identifying marks, the quality of their product, and which styles tend to be preferred. Despite these critical comments, this still is probably the best book on the market today. So, I would recommend this book to beginning collectors and people who just like to look at good pictures of lamps. For the more serious collector, you might want to wait until Nadja Maril or another author publishes a new and improved version.

                    5 out of 5 stars Very informative........2004-06-20

What a great book. Full of history, photos, examples, tips for the search of these lamps as well as proper care and restoration. I can't wait until the author writes another one! I highly recommend it to anyone.

If you need accurate and practial information about old lamps and light fixtures, this is the best book on the market. I refer to it all the time! The pictures are of excellent quality and the writing is clear and concise.

5 out of 5 stars A "Must Own" For Your Library.......1999-10-03

If you are looking for a book which has both an overview of different kinds of late 19th century and early 20th century American lighting and some practical advice on both buying and restoration; this is the book for you. It doesn't have everything; but a lot of good information, beautiful pictures and a price guide are included in its 142 pages. I like the way she has both original catalogue pictures and photographs. It's the best single book on the subject I've been able to find!

3 out of 5 stars Interesting, but not a keeper.......2003-04-21

If you are looking for Stack-n-Whack, this book contains only a couple of examples - the rest of the quilts are 8-pointed stars made by cutting the background squares and triangles in half so you don't have to do set-in "Y" seams. I tried piecing a star this way, and the piecing is a little easier, but it is not that hard to do the set-in seams and I don't like seeing the seams in what should be solid pieces of fabric. I'm a big fan of Bethany's Stack-N-Whack books but was a bit disappointed in this one.

All creatives need to go to a museum now and then; it's inspiring, encouraging, and refreshing. The problem that motion-graphics artists face is the lack of venues in which to present their work. Pause :59 Minutes of Motion Graphics is a showcase that helps fill that void; an oasis of images that are designed to enlighten and motivate.

This oversized softcover (which uses time code instead of page numbers) presents some of the finest work from a global pool, 300 lavish frames that illustrate the best in contemporary video design, motion graphics, and animation. This collection--featuring such luminary studios as The Attik and MTV, and individual artists like Mike Mills and Richard Kennworthy--is not to be missed. It's a shame that the pictures don't move.

In fact, if there's anything to complain about, it's the fact that there's no accompanying video, CD-ROM, or DVD to display the stunning work in this book properly. Even a Web site with QuickTime clips would have allowed readers to study and admire the work as it was meant to be presented.

If you create animation--or plan to--or do anything that's related to video, film, or motion graphics, you should read this book. Eye-popping, international, and oozing with creativity, Pause :59 Minutes of Motion Graphics belongs not on your shelf, but on your desk; open, accessible, and well worn. --Mike Caputo

                          Book Description

With its dynamic synthesis of such diverse media as film, animation, graphics and music, video design provides an expansive view into the many states of contemporary creativity. Pause tracks and contextualizes the visual and technological treends that mark the work of the most innovative video designers. As well as broadcast work, Pause examines demo reels, music videos, film titles, animation and experimental 3-D graphics.

Contributing video artists include Tomato, The Attik, Intro, MTV, Fuel, Tycoon Graphics, Richard Kennworthy, Mike Mills and many others from the US, UK, France, Germany, Holland, Japan, Scandinavia and other countries. Work is arranged according to type, rather than author or history, and each chapter is devoted to a theme, with a short introduction. The book also includes an introductory essay and timeline on the development of motion graphics since the widespread acceptance of television.

                          1 out of 5 stars I wish I didn't buy this book........2007-03-18

I had bought this book because it was "Required Reading" for one of my classes in art college. Not worth buying. Each page features storyboards of various motion graphics commercials/video art (and not even the best motion graphics at that). If I could return it, I'd return it right away. If you're an art student and you're a motion graphics art student, and you're required to buy this book for class, please don't waste your money. You are better off reviewing reels of commercials on company websites and learning from them. The choices of work in this particular book are terrible. The art/color is very mediocre and most seemed to have been released in the 1990's. Much of commercials/motion graphics nowadays are very sophisticated and artsy. You'd learn a lot more by watching the commercials on t.v.

If you are a student, please save your money for your bus fare/train commuting, or better yet save it as lunch money.

2 out of 5 stars Cool idea, insufficient execution.......2001-07-09

This should have been a CD-ROM or DVD product. The stills did nothing to inspire or educate me on motion graphic techniques. Nice philosophic text though.

                          3 out of 5 stars A nice once over.......2000-11-16

I read this in a sushi restaurant, or rather perused it. The brief bits of text that capped each segment seemed ... inconsequential. Nice ideas at times, but most weren't developed. The design was great, well worth a few hours attention, but better to borrow than to buy. Cinematic works can rarely be broken down to key frames, but the compilers of this book did a good job of that, capturing the essence of the spot (or at least why they were excited by it) in a half dozen shots. I would have loved a VCD or DVD with the book, but no such luck.

3 out of 5 stars Look before you buy.......2000-10-12

I'm not sure what I expected, but I was certainly glad I didn'tbuy it.

'Pause' takes several commercials and displays roughly16-20 frames of each one. The advantage is that most of thesecommercials aren't available to one audience (the USA, for example).

Yes, it's a neat looking, well-designed, oversized thing to hold. There WERE some inspiring things in there. However, in my opinionit's NOT a $35 dollar book. It makes a nice first impression, but inthe end it felt like a very high-end, $20 design industry magazine. It should have been priced as such.

5 out of 5 stars wonderful layout, full of incredible inspirational media art.......2000-08-01

I just picked this book up in NY and I'm blown away. Every time I eye it on my shelf I have to stop what I'm doing and pull it out, sit on the floor, and pour over the pages... This is wonderful art for the generation X/Y age group. Not to cram too many buzzwords into this review, but this stuff really is on the edge... it's out there... I'll be a happy man is this is the direction the art world takes in the next few years...

This book takes an empty approach to design... lots of white and black space with strange freeze frames of different video and web pieces. Unlike most of the digital art books today, this does not have a companion CD-rom. Thats what makes this book so interesting, is that you have digital moving art, frozen, taken out of context, and put to paper. There's not many books like this, too bad.
