4 out of 5 stars Good read, just not the GREAT read we now expect from Hunter.......2007-05-16

From anyone but Stephen Hunter this would be considered as good as it gets, but if you've been along on the many adventures of the Swagger family this may seem kinda average. That doesn't mean it's bad, it isn't. Fact is, it's hard to put down even if it is rather unbelievable in places. Sure not on a par with "Point of Impact" however!

5 out of 5 stars Still my favorite Stephen Hunter book........2006-07-14

When I talk to other Stephen Hunter fans, it's surprising to see how many of them don't know about this book. Probably because it's not a Swagger book.

That said, even after Pale Horse Coming and Havana, "Day Before Midnight" is still my favorite Stephen Hunter book. It should be mandatory reading for everyone in the National Guard. I've read this book three times.

An unidentified military force overtakes a U.S. nuclear missile silo. The hostile troops fortify their position outside the silo. Untested National Guard troops are closest to the scene, so they are sent in first. The U.S. commander has to make a lot of tough choices, because some of our guys are going to get killed, but they have to get into the silo before the bad guys can launch the missile. (Hunter creates plausible technical reasons why we can't just bomb them to smithereens.)

Hunter did a great job keeping the tension going, all while giving us great action scenes of small unit military combat. Unlike the Swagger books, where Hunter keeps the action close to the main character, this book follows many different characters and storylines, all headed toward the same place and time.

5 out of 5 stars Fast and Furious.......2006-05-24

Great book, plenty of action and suspense! Reads fast and very hard to put down (like Hunter's Bob Lee Swagger novels). The plot is rather contrived, but overall believable. My main beef is with the COL Dick Puller character, who I thought was the weakest character in the book (the Army should have left him retired-- he was, after all, retired in disgrace for a reason!). COL Puller never impressed me as being the great tactician the author intended. Instead, he seemed rigid and outdated in his tactical approach to the battle scenario presented. COL Puller simply "wasted" the Maryland guardsmen in a poorly planned and executed frontal assault against an entrenched enemy force without even trying to obtain basic pre-op intelligence (such as what might be under that "tarp" in front of the silo entrance). Puller even implied the guardsmen were expendible at that stage of the operation, though better planning on his part might have achieved a more favorable outcome for them and the mission. Also, seems that Puller could have simply planned (even if only as his backup contingency) to blow up the MX missle when it exited the silo (missles aren't going very fast at that point of the launch sequence). Better yet, he could have dismantled/destroyed the silo hangers directly to prevent a missle launching through them. Destroying the missle or silo directly would have been easier than trying to fight his way to the launch capsule at the end of the elevator shaft, or trying to infiltrate a small team through an uncertain (erosion-created) tunnel network at the base of the mountain. As it was, he never did have any such backup plan, should his "race against time" not succeed. But Puller-quibbling aside, The Day Before Midnight was still a very suspenseful book, one well worth the read.

5 out of 5 stars Action thriller with kick.......2006-05-21

I really enjoy well done action stories like this one. Hunter creates great, complex action plots in this very gripping story. I listened attentively though the whole thing and loved it. Excellent story. The book has depth and the characters are real and believable, even the bad guys. There is suspense and violence, but you feel it as part of the plot, not a separate thing thrown in after the fact to whip things up. If you like technological action thrillers involving the military strategy and intellectual types trying to solve puzzles, you'll like it.

2 out of 5 stars The countdown drags. . . . . ........2006-02-28

I'm probably the only one who will say this but when it comes to this novel, which I give props to the author for creating suspense, it is just too long and drawn out. I think I was at page 350 when I finally couldn't take it anymore and threw the book at the wall. It is good to build up suspense in anovel but, after reading this one, now I know that there is such a thing as too much suspense. As a writer's gimmack, you have to gradually give little hints and problematic, somewhat unescapable events, to the reader giving them just enough to feed off of. That's what drives the reader to progress foward, naturally, because he/she wants to see what happens next. But in this book there are just, dare I say, too many subplots. It almost feels that, when you're reading it, the author piles on different problems and events every ten pages. It just gets plain old tiring. It got me frustrated and I wasn't even in a bad mood. Okay, I can believe that someone was kidnapped and brought out of their house and forced into cutting a thick steel wall that leads to a doomsday machine but does there have to be so much stuff in it. Sure, I could imagine it becoming a movie but I couldn't even finish the book. I even cheated and just read the last page just to satisfy myself. But this is only my opinion. It is probably a really great book. If you have the patience for this author. I'm sure a lot of you out there will. Enjoy!

                  "

With her trademark electrifying storytelling and razor-sharp tension, New York Times bestselling author Elizabeth Lowell proves once again why she is one of today's top masters of suspense -- in a riveting tale of dark family secrets ready to explode with the devastating force of a Southwestern earthquake.

The powerful Quintrell family of New Mexico has spent decades in the public eye. Now the recent death of the clan's patriarch, a former U.S. senator, has placed his son, Governor Josh Quintrell, squarely in the spotlight as he prepares his run for the highest political office in the land. It is not a good time to be rattling skeletons in the family's closets.

Researching personal histories isn't just Carolina ""Carly"" May's profession, it's her passion. When the governor's eccentric Aunt Winifred invites Carly into the Quintrells' private Taos compound to compile a genealogical record of the illustrious residents, she can hardly believe her good luck. But digging into the past is raising troubling questions about the would-be president's private life, his late father and catatonic mother, and the grisly street crime that left his notorious drug-addicted sister dead. And it soon becomes frighteningly apparent that the motivation of the dotty old woman who hired Carly might be something more akin to revenge -- and that someone is determined to remove the inquisitive genealogist from the picture by any means necessary.

As a dark world of twisted passions and depraved crimes slowly opens up before Carly, she realizes that there is no one whom she dares to trust -- perhaps least of all Dan Duran, a dangerous and haunted mystery man who's somehow tied to the Quintrells' past. But she will need an ally to survive the terrible secrets a father carried to the grave and an even more devastating evil that lurks among the living -- because following the bloodlines of the wealthy and power-hungry can be a bloody business ... and some dead secrets can kill.

                  5 out of 5 stars Local Color.......2007-09-01

I've got to disagree with some of the negative reviews here, but that is because I am familiar with Northern New Mexico. I think Lowell got the local color just right - the book is superb if you appreciate it in that context. Northern NM is a land unto itself, with characters unto themselves - most (Hispanos) are decendents of families who moved from Spain over 400 years ago.

Although the relationships are complex in this book and I had to use the geneology chart in the front very often, I think it reflects the nature of the population.

You will enjoy this book if you are willing to see it as a set piece, not just another romantic-suspense book. I am proud of the work Lowell does in crafting the plot.

                  2 out of 5 stars Tedious.......2007-03-27

I listened to the MP3 version of this book. It was totally boring and irritating. (I kept listening because I was a captive audience and I wondered what the end twist would be. Unfortunately, it was just ugly.)

Maybe when you hear the repetition involved in the way in which the characters speak to one another, it's worse because you don't skim it. Each time one character spoke to another, their conversation included a lesson in genealogy or some other topic. They never had ordinary--let alone sparkling or interesting--conversation! I agree with others--where is the EL who has written so many GOOD stories? Skip this one.

4 out of 5 stars Always Time To Die.......2006-11-02

Typical Elizabeth Lowell. If you are fan of her work you will find it an interesting read.

2 out of 5 stars Slow to get going.......2006-10-23

This is not the best Lowell novel I've ever read. They storyline was slow to get started and wandered around a bit. I would not recommend this book.

This is the first book I have read by the author and I liked it. Some things you do have to suspend your disbelief about, but all in all, it was a thriller and it was good. I thought, anyway.

Custer is a former Texas minister who was joined with a spiritual being called "Genesis." Now Custer is on a journey to find God, but not in the traditional enlightenment sense. I mean track Him down and give Him a piece of his mind. Along for the journey are his gun-friendly girlfriend and his Irish punk vampire buddy. Until the End of the World starts with a flashback to Jesse's childhood, when he watched his father get shot in the head. Book Description

Christians do not trust freedom. As author Steve Brown explains in this brave new book, they prefer the security of rules and self-imposed boundaries, which they tend to inflict on other Christians. Brown asserts that real freedom means the freedom to be wrong as well as right. Christianity often calls us to live beyond the boundaries, bolstered by the assurance that we cannot fall beyond God's love. Freedom is dangerous, but the alternative is worse -- boxing ourselves up where we cannot celebrate our unique gifts and express our joy in Christ. Each of the book's eleven chapters explores a common pharisaic, freedom-stifling tendency, then opens the door to the fresh air of a remedial liberty. A reader's delight, A Scandalous Freedom sometimes shocks with challenges to prevailing wisdom, but it follows up with compelling validations of our need to celebrate real, unstinted freedom in Christ.

Steve Brown is quite an amazing author of a great deal of publications. He is also a pastor who teaches on radio broadcasts (which I listen to found at his website) and a Bible teacher at a reformed seminary.

What makes this book so unique and such a worthwhile read for every Christian is really the depth of Brown's understanding of what the Bible actually teaches. I believe the main point of this book is that if you are a Christian, God is no longer angry with you. It's a fundamental truth of Christianity that is too good to be true for many Christians. But it is true, and Steve will help you to see this truth as it is presented in the Bible.

What else is really great about this pastor is the sharp wit and a complete honesty that is oftentimes surprising that's used to convey each and every message given whether on a broadcast, in an article, or in a book, etc.

Steve Brown has helped many people break free from the chains of legalistic religion, which instead of honoring God, honors man's attempts to please God. Legalism is often in the form of a blind religion and is a breeding ground for false teaching and false teachers who slip in unnoticed, etc. Steve will help you to see clearly that Christianity is all about Jesus, who was resurrected from this earth so that our heart and minds would be on "things above, not on earthly things" (Colossians 3:2).

"A Scandalous Freedom" is just such an amazing read, chock full of wisdom and insight from a masterful teacher of the Bible! Here is just one example of the many of Steve's insights and his style of presentation (which is often very humorous): "The only people who get better are people who know that, if they never get better, God will love them anyway. The corollary to that principle is this: God will not only love you if you don't get better; he will teach you that getting better isn't the issue. His love is the issue. Out of the love, kindness, and presence of God, you will find yourself getting better" (p. 69). So if you want the honest truth from a teacher who has been gifted by God, then you ought to read this book and can also visit his website for the radio broadcast series.

The beginning of the book goes in the right direction - towards freedom (Christians really aren't free), and I was smiling as I read it. Then my smile turned to concern, and a definite frown by the time I got to the end. He sets you free, then very deftly wraps the chains back around you - tighter than before - it becomes the same old fundamentalist rhetoric. Once a fundamentalist, always a fundamentalist. A very disappointing read. Book went in the trash - didn't have it in me to give it away.

                            5 out of 5 stars A Must-Read!.......2007-05-13

I was handed a copy of Steve Brown's A Scandalous Freedom by a colleague during a conference. I already had a couple books I planned on reading that week. My colleague mentioned that I could skim it if I preferred. I read one page, and realized that this was far more important than anything I was reading at the time. The whole book was finished in three days.

What made this such fascinating reading? A hint can be found in the subtitle of the book: "The Radical Nature of the Gospel".

You see, Brown's basic premise is that the Grace of God sets us free. Of course all orthodox Christians would agree with that. Where many will find Brown's book hard to swallow (if not downright disturbing) is that he defines freedom as...well...freedom. Not freedom from, nor freedom to...simply freedom.

Now before we get into calls of heresy, Brown is no antinomian. Perhaps one of his most vivid illustrations in a book full of vivid illustrations is his description of the Law of God as a map to guide us through a minefield. He is just tired (as am I) of God's people being burdened by man-made laws. The following quote from the book puts it quite succinctly:

"I fear too often the church has become an organization of guilty people with a guilty preacher standing in the pulpit, telling guilty people that they should feel guiltier"

I'm afraid that this small review is not doing Brown (a professor at Reformed Theological Seminary) justice. I just know that, upon reading this book, I came away with a much greater desire to really know Jesus. Perhaps people in ministry are expected to have that base covered, but I confess readily that I do not.

Those of you who have followed these reviews know that when I believe a book is less than quality, I say so. Take that into account, then, when I say YOU NEED TO READ THIS BOOK. I am not saying I agree with the author on everything (after all, nobody has achieved the level of spirituality it takes to totally agree with me!). I am saying your walk with God will be greatly benefited by it.

                            5 out of 5 stars NOT GUILTY!!!!!.......2007-04-28

Because of Christ, we are declared "not guilty!" The freedom that is in Christ is so amazing and actually quite hard to believe. This book allowed me to release years of guilt and begin a fresh, new and exciting relationship with God. I couldn't put the book down. It is a "must read!"

I just got this book last night and can't wait to dig in!

This book provides wonderful sounding recipes with easy to find (read "standard pantry fare") ingredients. Most of the recipes are prepared and ready to eat in less than 30 minutes.

                            Some of the recipes include:

                            Strawberry Cream Dip

                            Jalapeno Cheese Bites

Great Garlic Soup - I'm making this tomorrow

Honey-Lime Fruit Dressing - Hmmm, I've got some bananas & apples that would be perfect for this...

                            Tandoori Chicken

                            Oniony Salisbury Steaks

                            Jamaican Pork Tenderloin

                            "Oven-Fried" Fish

                            Fresh Veggie Burgers

                            Spinach and Cheese Manicotti

** WHAT? You're still reading this? You should be ordering it instead! **

Did I mention the cookies, pies, cakes and parfaits?

Just because there are less fats and sugars doesn't mean it has less taste. Buy it and try it. I think you'll be pleased.

Slip into a bold and colorful era in cloth design. Once fashionable decorative fabrics for the home, these large and sometimes splashy print designs were used for drapery, upholstery, slipcover, and tablecloth fabrics. Designs prevalent in the 1950s included tropical scenes, American West motifs, sports and sporting events, nautical and boating themes, kitchen designs, and exotic foreign destinations. Often customized for specific rooms, some fabrics feature typical "den," "kitchen," or "child's bedroom" themes. Included are more than 250 color photographs of vintage conversational or novelty prints with full descriptions, along with drapery and fabric-covered furnishings available from Sears Catalogs. This colorful book offers a glimpse of fabric designs available for the average home in the 1950s.

Frames often catch the eye and arouse the curiosity of visitors to galleries and museums, yet labels and catalogues rarely comment on them. In this elegant survey, Nicholas Penny conveys his passionate interest in the history of frames, the design and techniques of frame-making, what frames do for paintings, and the part they play in the decoration and often the architecture of an interior.

I am opening a preschool and I used this book to get ideas for unique decorations. I got some great ideas out of this book to use even in a school setting. The book is based mostly on home spaces, but you can use the ideas anywhere.

4 out of 5 stars Good for Ideas but not realistic for "regular" peple.......2005-11-30

When I picked up this book I recognized it for what it is, an Idea Book. This is not a book with plans or steps on how to create the looks, but I think it offers what it says it will...Ideas.

The book includes beautiful color photographs that feature bathrooms, playrooms and even outdoor spaces. It also includes incorporating family rooms and kitchens with more child-focused features. Basically, the book covers almost every room in a house.

Many of the rooms (playrooms, bedrooms) are bigger than my master suite, LOL so I think that if you are looking for exactly the size you need it might be a little difficult. With a little imagination and creativity, I think you can take even these huge rooms and adapt them for a smaller room. I really like the bathroom section for kids and some of the bedrooms seemed fairly easy to do. I also like the organization of closets that were included in the book.

If you have a bottomless budget and lots of square footage, this is a great book for finding ideas on how to decorate for kids. If your budget is limited, I still think this book will give you some good ideas, but a different book might be more useful if you are looking for step-by-step instructions.

I was hoping to find ideas to help us in renovating our son's room. Unfortunately, most ideas in this book would require a tremendous amount of capital investment and certainly are out of reach for many people.

However, we were able to grasp some ideas which we'll try to tailor down to our middle class standards.

4 out of 5 stars Title Says it All.......2005-02-09

The book is generally well layed out. Don't expect any plans, you are expected to develop your own ideas and it should help you accomplish this. Overall, the title says it all.

2 out of 5 stars not for the home owner, but the home BUILDER.......2004-10-14

This book has many creative ideas. But, they are mostly ideas that would require major remodeling, would be impossible, or would only be helpful when designing your blue prints. There are decorating ideas, but overall, this book is geared more toward the architect. An example is an in-the-wall loft, and another is a split level bedroom. Also, the rooms are rarely your average square bedroom but instead have very creative floor plans. SO- the book is creative and attractive, but not very useful.

Over the course of the past 35 years, California-based fine art publisher Crown Point Press has established one of the finest reputations in the printmaking and publishing world. Founded by Kathan Brown, the press is most renowned for its innovative and experimental uses of the oldest and most traditional printmaking processes: etching and woodcut. Under Brown's direction, Crown Point's master printmakers have worked on an astonishingly broad array of projects, including those of John Cage, Tom Marioni, and Pat Steir. The press has also printed and published important minimalist and conceptual graphics, as well as editions by such painterly painters as Richard Diebenkorn, Francesco Clemente, and Helen Frankenthaler. More than 200 full-color, beautifully reproduced prints in this softcover volume document the entire history and development of Crown Point, confirming its unique and enduring contribution to the transformation of 20th-century printmaking.

                                Book Description

Crown Point Press in San Francisco, founded in 1962 by Kathan Brown, is a world-renowned center of contemporary printmaking. It has published work by such major figures as Richard Diebenkorn, Helen Frankenthaler, Sol LeWitt, and Wayne Thiebaud, while bringing to attention prints by many younger artists, including April Gornik, Anish Kapoor, Eric Fischl, and Francesco Clemente. Crown Point Press is known for presenting social and political issues in a range of printmaking media, from hard- and soft-ground etching to drypoint, aquatint, and mezzotint.
The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco acquired the Crown Point Press archive in 1991. This collection of nearly 800 works contains one impression of every print the Press has ever produced. Also included are over 2000 working proofs and preparatory sketches. Now, in collaboration with the National Gallery of Art, the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco has organized an exhibition of these distinctive prints. Chronicling Crown Point Press's dedication to artistic quality and commitment to innovation in printmaking technique and subject matter, this book also presents Kathan Brown's notable contributions in transforming the printmaking landscape of the twentieth century.

Crown Point Press is one of the leading American printer/publishers of original fine prints, emphasizing intaglio (etching) techniques (although at various periods it has also sponsored woodblock projects). This book is a celebration of 35 years (as of 1997) of printing at Crown Point, and consists of three essays, plus the catalogue of the exhibition that followed the acquisition of the Crown Point archive by the Fine Art Museums of San Francisco.

The first essay is a history of Crown Point Press, and particularly of the unique vision and direction given to the Press by its founder and first printer, Kathan Brown. Although occasionally tedious (as when it lapses into lists of the artists who worked at the Press during a particular period), this essay provides interesting discussions of Brown's evolving philosophy, her interactions with artists belonging to various art movements, the different goals of the artists, and so on. You also get a small glipse into the economics of print publishing.

The second and third essays were what I found most interesting. Karin Breuer shows how the working proofs contained in the Press's archive document the artist at work, and the very different working methods that can be effective for different artists. Steven Nash discusses the interrelationships between an artist's work in printmaking and his or her work in other media.

Two-thirds of the book is the exhibition catalogue, which shows the truly amazing breadth and quality of the work done at Crown Point over the years. Although Brown has had a particular affinity for Minimalist and Conceptual art, she has invited interesting artists across a wide spectrum of "isms" to work at the Press, and the list of participating artists reads like a "who's who" of American art in the second half of the 20th Century. Particularly significant artists at Crown Point have included Richard Diebenkorn, John Cage, Wayne Thiebaud and Sol LeWitt, all of whom are well represented in the catalogue.

This is certainly not a "how to" book, and it is probably still too soon to be able to look back and really say "yes, this artist or movement was significant," or "this Press made a difference in American art," or even "this is the lasting contribution made by the post-WWII resurgence in printmaking." This book provides an important record, however, of 35 years at one of the most important American printer/publishers, and as such makes it easier to think about these questions and begin to glimpse answers.

Charles Pierce did the get last laugh on his "friend," author Wallraff. This book is clearly an attempt for Wallraff to make some quick bucks and cash in on his relationship with Pierce. Wallraff drags (pun intended) up ancient, petty and no-so-petty arguments out of the distant past to discredit Pierce as a human being. Pierce would not the first show biz figure who didn't measure up so well offstage. How unfortunate that this book wasn't done as an in-depth examination of the California gay world through the eyes of those who were there. The publisher should be ashamed of themselves for putting this out--the editing is almost nonexistent, with lots of repetitive phrases and terrible journalism (Pierce's involvement in a tragic suicide is glossed over--surely some police records or newspaper reports exist). I like a juicy scene as much as the next guy, but the sexual interludes here are downright pathetic because they have nothing to do with Pierce's career and are only an exercise in badly written pornography. I am glad that I have my memories of Pierce, which I will cling to as some of the best nights I ever spent in cabarets. As for this book, I will remember it as one of the worst pieces of trash I ever wasted my money on.

2 out of 5 stars Amateur Night at the Drag Show.......2003-10-09

Written by a long-time friend and fellow performer who seems to have serious unresolved issues about laboring in Pierce's shadow, this amateurish look at the famous entertainer isn't so much a cohesive biography as it is a haphazard memoir cobbled together from press clippings, boozy reminsces of barroom nights, transcripts of Pierce's act and excerpts from an autobiography Pierce never completed. Adding to the "kitchen sink" effect are a number of "fly-on-the-wall" descriptions of totally extraneous sexual interludes, that border on porn. For die-hard Pierce fans, this book is better than nothing. But not much.

2 out of 5 stars Unfortunately, you should not buy this book.......2002-12-22

I wish I could recommend this book, but I cannot. I was left with the impression that the author was seeking his own 15 minutes of fame by writing this rather than trying to truly chronicle Mr. Pierce's life and career. If you feel you need to read this book, please save your money and get it from the library. Then, find a VHS copy of "Charles Pierce at the Ballroom" and enjoy Charles at his best.
