"Once upon a time," A.S. Byatt's title fairy story begins, "when men and women hurtled through the air on metal wings, when they wore webbed feet and walked on the bottom of the sea, learning the speech of whales and the songs of the dolphins ... there was a woman who was largely irrelevant, and therefore happy. Her business was storytelling..." But this is no backward looking, quaint fairy time. The time is the present, and the protagonist is a sensible scholar who is given the not-at-all sensible gift of a genie. How will Gillian, an expert in fairy stories and well versed in all that can go wrong with wishes, use hers?

Distinguished British author and Booker Prize-winner A.S. Byatt creates fairy tales for adults, each a blend of the magical and the modern, and readers of Angels & Insects and Possession will recognize the role of Victorian fairy tales in her fiction. This handsome little book includes reproductions of woodcuts that evoke our childhood wonder for dragons and princesses, glass coffins and netherworldly things.

Book Description

The magnificent title story of this collection of fairy tales for adults describes the strange and uncanny relationship between its extravagantly intelligent heroine--a world renowned scholar of the art of story-telling--and the marvelous being that lives in a mysterious bottle, found in a dusty shop in an Istanbul bazaar. As A.S. Byatt renders this relationship with a powerful combination of erudition and passion, she makes the interaction of the natural and the supernatural seem not only convincing, but inevitable.

The companion stories in this collection each display different facets of Byatt's remarkable gift for enchantment. They range from fables of sexual obsession to allegories of political tragedy; they draw us into narratives that are as mesmerizing as dreams and as bracing as philosophical meditations; and they all us to inhabit an imaginative universe astonishing in the precision of its detail, its intellectual consistency, and its splendor.

"A dreamy treat.... It is not merely strange, it is wondrous."
--Boston Globe

"Alternatingly erudite and earthy, direct and playful.... If Scheherazade ever needs a break, Byatt can step in, indefinitely."
--Chicago Tribune

"Byatt's writing is crystalline and splendidly imaginative.... These [are] perfectly formed tales."
--Washington Post Book World

5 out of 5 stars This book contains one of the finest novellas in English.......2005-03-21

If I could give this book 10 stars for the novella "The Djinn in the Nightingale's Eye", I certainly would. I think it is one of the three finest short stories in the English language along with Isak Dineson's "Babette's Feast" and Paul Bowles'"Delicate Prey".

Two thirds of the book are devoted to this novella. There are 4 short stories that make up the other third of the book. These stories: The Glass Coffin, Gode's Story, Tale of the Eldest Princess, and Dragon's Breath, are very well constructed adult fairy tales and well worth reading.

However "The Dijinn in the Nightingale's Eye" is exceptional. In this story, Gillian, a middleaged scholar is in Istanbul for a conference of experts on myths, legends, and fairy tales. Her husband has divorced her after their two daughters had grown and left home. From here the story starts to spin story within story in rich overlays of meaning and metaphor. Gillian is an expert in wishes since she is an expert in fairy tales. The wisdom of her three wishes drives the tale. We are treated to an interpretation of one of Chaucer's tales as well as a re-telling of Gilgamesh.

I am certain that rich feminist interpretations are possible, considering the images of the role of women that change throughout the book. The characters go to St. Sophia (named after the feminine aspect of the Holy Spirit) where they put their finger into a hole in a marble column that remains forever moist.

The writing was very erotic for a fairy tale. The Djinn appears nude in Gillian's hotel room, he is 20 times larger than a human, as are his genitals. Byatt then tales us of the overpowering smell of masculinity coming from this handsome giant creature.

The Djinn tells tales of his 1000 year existence in the courts of Arab kings. His tales of love reveal that his heart is as mature as the heart of Gillian, making them a wonderful match for the adventures they undergo.

I was thoroughly entertained with the wisdom of each of Gillian's three wishes and her ability to string out these three wishes as she gained more knowledge of the Djinn. It is her final wish that reveals the ultimate power in the Universe, at least from my perspective. Maybe this is why I was so captivated by Byatt's wonderful novella.

I read the novella twice over the last 5 years and it remains unforgettable for me. I can not recommend it more strongly.

5 out of 5 stars a lovely book.......2004-11-22

These five stories are told with the shimmering grace and ephemeral colors A.S. Byatt readers have come to expect. And as such, these five realistic fairy tales for adults will surely not disappoint. But these tales are, in some way, something more. Written in different times and for different reasons, they nonetheless "hang together" almost as one whole fairy tale about love, dream, story-telling and the many different ways we have of being free. Free to live our own lives, comfortable with themselves, their worlds, and their selves. Free to know we are, indeed, quite special after all.

I highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful fairty tales for adults!.......2004-06-07

A.S Byatt is one of the most talented and brilliant writers today. The Djinn in the Nightingale's Eye is an engaging collection of adult fairy tales that are a delight to read. Byatt has a wonderful way with the English language. Her writing is delicate and precise without being too precious. "The Story of the Eldest Princess," "The Glass Coffin," and "Dragon's Breath" are my favorites. Byatt has such incredible range and depth, and it shows in this fine short story collection. This is not a large volume, there are only five stories here, but it's a wonderful way to spend a few hours transported into other worlds by an extremely talented writer. Highly recommended...

4 out of 5 stars very very fun, but most of it is recycled from her novels.......2004-05-09

So far as I can tell, the Djinn story is the only original thing in this book. The other stories are lifted from her novels in truncated form, kind of pasted in to inflate the size into a book rather than the single story of the title; this is a bit cheap.

Nonetheless, the quality of the Djinn story is simply exceptional, a five-star performance that is perceptive, funny, hopeful, and sad. The protagonist is a middle-aged divorcee, whose entire life is displayed in a single magical instant that transforms her - but not her fate. The images are fabulously well drawn, unforgettable really, and will remain engraved in my memory for the rest of my life. Moreover, the subtlety of the encounter with the supernatural is full of delicious ambiguities and a peek into the fantastic that is one of the best I have ever encountered. I loved it, laughed, and felt wonder all at the same moment.

So I would warmly recommend this book, so long as the reader knows that the rest of it is somewhat disappointing.

4 out of 5 stars A Treat for Byatt Fans.......2002-03-04

I loved this book but I really think you have to have read Byatt's Booker Prize winning novel, "Possession," in order to best understand and relate to the stories in "The Djinn in the Nightingale's Eye."

In "Possession," Byatt created two wonderful Victorian characters, Randolphe Ash and Christabel La Motte, both writers. Two of the fairy tales contained in this collection of Byatt originals, "The Glass Coffin," and "Gode's Story," are the work of "Ash" and "La Motte." This is not to say that a reader will not enjoy them if he or she has not read "Possession." It only means that he will not derive the maxiumum amount of enjoyment from the stories.

The other two stories, "The Story of the Eldest Princess" and "Dragons' Breath," as well as the title novella, are meditations on the art of storytelling and all are very good. "The Djinn in the Nightingale's Eye," in particular, is excellent. The only thing I didn't like about some of these stories, "The Story of the Eldest Princess," especially, is the thread of feminisim that runs through them. But, on further reflection, I suppose that is typical of all fairy tales, to some extent.

"The Djinn in the Nightingale's Eye," tells the tale of a modern day storyteller who loves to meditate on the tales of Scheherazade. It is a rather pessimistic tale, from some standpoints, though not entirely, and the storyteller is a very clever one. She proves this cleverness when she winds up with a djinn of her very own.

Byatt's characters never seem to be black or white; instead, they are simply people with very differing views on life and the choices that should be made. The characters in this book are no different and that is one of things that makes them so charming and believable.

These aren't the typical "happily ever after" fairy tales of your childhood. They are, rather, meditations and reflections instead. But they are meditations and reflections that do contain more than a bit of magic. If you like your fairy tales told with a modern touch and if you prefer them on the esoteric side, this might be a book you'll really enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Beautifully written fairy tales........1998-12-08

For people who fancy themselves literary types, this is book is a delightful piece of "light" reading. There are five perfect little stories to tickle your fancy; each one long enough to read on the bus on the way to work, or at night just before bed. Byatt knows how to weave a tale in the old fashioned way, with some more contemporary humour added. They are reminiscent of Oscar Wilde's fairy tales: subtle, riveting and undeniably lovely.

              Book Description

Bestselling author Bertrice Small continues the blazing adventures of raven-haired, emerald-eyed Skye O'Malley. This time, she is a pawn in the bitter war between England's Queen Elizabeth, and Mary, Queen of Scots. Once again, unprotected and alone, she must fight for her children. At the command of Queen Elizabeth, Skye marries the cruel Duc de Beaumont de Jaspre. Although her new life is horrid at first, Skye transforms it with her hot-blooded desires--only to be shaken with the news that her beloved former husband may be alive in Algiers. Her daring flight into eroticism and danger leads her ultimately to her heart's true destiny--as bold and sensual as Skye herself. She is a woman born to be loved by men, yet too proud and incomparable to answer to anything but the call of her own passionate soul.
"Bertrice Small creates cover-to-cover passion, a keen sense of history and suspense."

              Customer Reviews:

              5 out of 5 stars the baroness.......2007-01-25

Bertrice Small is one of my favorite novelists, and so therefore it was of paramount importance that I add this book to my collection. Few fictional characters are so incredible that they need two books written about them, and this one does not disappoint.

This is definitely not a book for the faint-hearted, as it does contain some graphic and explicit rape and S/M scenes. I strongly encourage new readers to keep an open mind while reading Ms. Small's work.

I would have preferred that Ms. Small develop the Nicholas character a bit more. I would have loved to have known how his life turned out. Otherwise, this is a fitting sequel to "Skye O'Malley". A must have for Bertrice Small afficionados.

4 out of 5 stars Anticlimatic (but I enjoyed it anyway)........2002-12-20

This is a very exciting sequel to SKYE O'MALLEY. The action resumes a couple of years after the end of SO. Skye is at last happily married to Niall and in her proper place as the chatelaine of Burke Castle. But with the sudden death of her father-in-law, all goes wrong, and her world is topsy turvy. Niall, who supposedly was murdered by his insane first wife, is reported to be alive; unfortunately, he's now the sex toy of a spoiled Moroccan princess, and to get him back, Skye herself has to pose as a Moroccan's sex toy. I don't want to divulge what happens after this, as I don't want to ruin it for anyone contemplating reading this book, but it's anticlimatic and probably THE most disappointing thing to happen in any Bertrice Small novel.

I thought the Nicholas character was unfairly treated and badly hurt. Skye led him down the primrose path only to dis him at the mention that Niall was alive. And the hurt brough upon Nicholas was especially senseless and unfair in light of how the Niall situation turned out. A handsome, kind-hearted man who would have laid down his life for Skye got his heart broken for no good reason.

I liked Adam -- he was the strongest and most positive character in the book. He was both a good friend and good lover to Skye. I also liked his family, who were all as positive and uplifting as he was.

5 out of 5 stars great book ... some oddities.......2002-08-05

I truly love this book, it was entertaining and well written.

Adam is my favorite Male in the Skye O'Malley series. Im glad Skye ends up with him. I did not like the fact that it is never explored reguarding Nialls poisoning, I assumed the red head princesses slave who gave Niall the jellies did it. Knowing Skye you'd think she would figure it out and get her revenge. That was odd to me. Skyes "hohum" attitude to her rape by Navarre was also strange.

The end did make me cry a little and smile. Skye was strong, smart and not above using her charms to get what she needed. I like her shrewd but not bitchy attitude.

The sex scenes were well done, the ones with Kedar were articulary kinky and hot. I loved them especially but I can see how that might be to vulgar for some readers.

              2 out of 5 stars Poor Skye.......2001-12-27

All I can say is give poor Skye a break. It cannot be a real romance novel when half of the book is rape and death. I cried more during this book than I ever had before. And how many husbands can one woman have and how much pain can she suffer through? Just let her be happy

              5 out of 5 stars Sweetest taboo!.......2001-04-04

Like all of Ms. Small's books in this series, this one is a winner! Skye never ceases to amaze me. This woman would make a great friend, or a fierce enemy! She battled two queens and still came out a winner. If you like any of Ms. Small's books, you will surely like this one also.

I can't believe this. I'm probably the least likely person to endorse a planner, journal, devotional, or some other product that is a spin-off from a currently popular book. Frankly, to me they just appear to be a shameless way of capitalizing on a book's success, put together for no other reason than to make a few extra bucks.

Dream Planner has changed my mind. While it still seems to be a lot of money for mostly blank pages, it captures the essence of the Dream Giver very well. It stimulates thought and encourages you to map out your Big Dream, and record the high and low points along the way to living that Big Dream. It's a great collection of scripture, quotes and excerpts from the Dream Giver, presented in a very attractive format. This will be a planner that you will treasure.

5 out of 5 stars a companion piece to The Dream Giver.......2003-11-08

This "blank book" has subtly marbleized, good quality paper, which has on every other page an inspirational quote, along with seven lovely sienna tinted images by Steve Gardner. Most of the quotes are either from the Bible, or from Bruce Wilkinson's marvelous book, "The Dream Giver", and since it has a similar cover to the Wilkinson book, makes a good companion piece as a work book or journal, as one travels the path from "The Land of Familiar" to the place the "Dream Giver" has in store for you.
It is one of the most aesthetically pleasing blank books I have ever owned, and am enjoying using it specifically for notes while reading Dr. Wilkinson's works.
To quote from the back cover, "This Planner is the perfect place to dedicate your hopes, your disappointments, and your successes".

3 out of 5 stars Great recipes .......2005-10-22

I am not a fan of every dish in the book, but there are enough recipes to keep me busy. Beautiful photos. The book does not a lot about the region's culture or the cultural significance of the recipes (I prefer to have that info in a region-specific book.) However, each recipe does include brief observations by the author. What I particularly enjoy is that at the end of some recipes, there are suggestions about what else to serve with the dish. One of my favorite recipes is the fennel salad with clemembines and moroccan olives.

                              5 out of 5 stars YUMMY!!.......2001-03-27

This is a wonderful cookbook by famous chef Matthew Kenney. I love Morrocan and Mediterranean foods. I found the recipes not only delicious but very easy to make. Matthew describes his first interest in Mediterranean cooking and how he became a chef. Some of my favorite recipes are the carpaccio, the fennel salad, and the poek loin with apricot and pistachios. It's a great little book if you like cooking "exotic foods".

5 out of 5 stars A great addition to your kitchen..........2000-08-23

This book offers a great combination of things: Excellent recipes, relative ease of cooking the dishes, beautifully graphic layout/design, and wonderful text.

Matthew has a good ability to cook these dishes, and an equally good ability to "teach" the reader how to do the same.

The recipes are really all over the place, drawing upon influences of all Mediterrean countries. Some dishes for instance, are really more common to Middle-Eastern countries, but all flow wonderfully together in this work.

A truly enjoyable, as well as informative, book.

5 out of 5 stars Something for everyone!.......1999-07-03

With recipes easy enough for beginners and interesting enough for seasoned (no pun intended) gourmands, this book is one I keep going back to time after time. This book also makes a great gift, as it is as attractive as it is usable. I'm here in the heart of America's Dairyland, but Matthew's Olive Oil Mashed Potatoes could almost make me give up butter!

                              4 out of 5 stars Beautifully done.......1998-06-28

My husband bought me this book, and I love it! The recipes are easy to follow, and the pictures are great. It's a fun book to go through, and Kenney adds a lot of personal touches. It's one of my favorite mediterranean cookbooks. Try the Sicilian Rice Salad with Tuna and Mint. It's one of my favorites.

                                Book Description

This well focused and perceptive analysis of a phenomenon in our popular culture—the new respectability of the comic book form—argues that the comics medium has a productive tradition of telling true stories with grace and economy. It details vividly the outburst of underground comics in the late 1960s and `70s, whose cadre of artistically gifted creators were committed to writing comic books for adults, an audience they made aware that comic books can offer narratives of great power and technical sophistication.

In this study Joseph Witek examines the rise of the comic book to a position of importance in modern culture and assesses its ideological and historical implications. Jack Jackson, Art Spiegelman, and Harvey Pekar are among the creators whom Witek credits for the emergence of the comic book as a serious artistic medium. As American codes of ethics, aesthetics, and semiotics have evolved, so too has the comic book as a mode for presenting the weightier matters of history. It is safe to claim that comic books are not just for kids anymore.

This book tries to cover areas that are best left to magazine articles. I was looking for a book on the shop space itself, but this one pays a lot of attention to the tools in a workshop instead. Brands of tools, accessories, and machine-specific set-ups become quickly dated and are not useful to everyone picking up the book. Most woodworker's don't go out, buy all their equipment, clear out the basement, and then start on projects. Unfortunately, this is the assumption the author works under, and it hurts the book's usefulness. The pictures should add something to the text, but many of the pictures take up space (5 pics of one commercial vice?), advertise a specific item, or don't add value (we all know what flexible hose is). A lot of time is spent on the author's personal shop, which isn't particularly innovative or different. I can see lots of shop tours online. Nagyszalanczy's book is a far superior alternative.

2 out of 5 stars Just so so ..........2002-12-04

Not the best book in the world. I got this as a gift a while ago. I've just recently set up my shop, but this book didn't help at all. He has a few good ideas for jigs toward the end, but the rest is, as someone else reviewed, common sense at best. He really does gloss over a lot of details that should be covered in a good book on this topic. And he spends a LOT of time explaining what I, at least, think are simple things (types of table saws, brands and models (many outdated, as far as I can tell) of many different machines, etc. I have other much, much better books on woodworking. I would not say that this is anywhere near the best of them.

4 out of 5 stars Great help for beginng woodworkers looking for direction........2002-03-16

I found this book very helpful for me in setting up my woodshop for the first time. It is well organized, easy to read, and I find that as my range of skills increase, I go back to it again and again looking for new ideas. It offers both in price and function, a wide variety of examples of workbenches, shop layouts, storage alternatives, and shop equipment. I found the many pictures throughout the book, enlightening, interesting, and instructive. If you are just getting started and don't have a good idea on where to begin, this book is a great choice and an excellent value.

5 out of 5 stars Very Helpful Book.......2001-11-05

This author has a wonderful writing style - provides information with style and humor. Diagrams, photos, drawings and a superb depth of knowledge from Bill Stankus made this book a great resource. Highly recommend.

                                2 out of 5 stars Only superficial.......2001-09-07

Although I have not completed the book I've gotten to the first 7 chapters and I have not found it that enlightening. Most of the referenced shops are old and out of date. The depth of discussion is common sense at best. For example there is a chapter devoted to dust collection but no information on how to determine which size of collector is needed. Nothing on ducting size, determining static pressure loss, length of run, grounding techniques, etc. All very important in deciding how big a collector to buy and how to install. Yet the title implies it is a how to guide. Again very superficial on most topics covered. No guidance is supplied.

                                        Book Description

Dieter Roth was the quintessential artist's artist, highly revered by his peers. Between 1947 and 1998, Roth made 524 prints, culminating in one of the richest and most diverse printmaking oeuvres ever. Many are unique prints, created by the inventive manipulation of the various stages in the printmaking process, achieving remarkable editions in which not one print is identical.

The artist used all known—and some newly invented—printmaking techniques including woodcuts (relief printing), etching, engraving, aquatint (intaglio printing), lithography, offset (planographic printing), screenprinting (stencil printing), pressings (objects flattened by vertically exerted pressure), and squashings (objects flattened by horizontally exerted pressure). Often various methods were combined.

Roth's creativity and ingenuity pushed printmaking beyond all known borders. All his prints are reproduced here in full color, and, in many cases, several examples of the unique prints are shown.

A text by the curator Dirk Dobke and a text based on an interview with Richard Hamilton accompany the book. 700 color illustrations.

                                          Book Description

This is the first detailed appraisal of Federico Fellini's universe. Collected here, in addition to a biography and filmography, is a wealth of previously unpublished material allowing a detailed and often personal view of the master of cinema.

Published for the first time in these pages are the texts for four films Fellini never made, complete with sketches and notes; and the director's correspondence with other filmmakers, artists, and famous writers. Fellini's descriptions of his dreams, accompanied by splendid drawings, allow a glimpse of the subconscious world that contributed so much to the creation of his films. His comic strips of unmade films provide an intriguing account of his activity in the last years of his life. The filmography is illustrated with posters, sketches, and stills from all of Fellini's masterpieces - including his best-loved La Strada, 8 1/2, The Clowns, La Dolce Vita, Roma, Amarcord, and La Voce Della Luna.

                                            Book Description

Like a colossus, Federico Fellini bestrides the history of Italian cinema. Four times winner of the Oscar for Best Foreign Film, over the course of his career Fellini created a body of work - La Strada, La Dolce Vita, 8 1/2, Roma, to name a few - that was distinctly his own.

He called the cinema a circus, and stated that if he hadn't become a film-maker he would have been a circus director. Together with actors like Marcello Mastroianni and Giulietta Masina he created films that were visually and emotionally rich, comic and profoundly moving.

This book is a free-ranging series of discussions that reach deep into the heart of Fellini's creative process, illustrated by the drawings and sketches that were an indispensable part of his artistic process.

5 out of 5 stars Meet the man known as Fellini........2006-08-07

At first I didn't understand as to why I couldn't put this novel down. I won't lie there is a 40 page slightly confusing introduction by Fellini that jumps back and forth from different periods down memory lane. However it's exactly that which makes you realize these words are Fellini's and only his. We get his insight into basically every film he ever made just with the introduction; and then he gives us the dish on how they all came to be. I have read a few of these "on" books and this is the first that truly interested me. Fellini was a genius and saw the world in a way we could only try to understand through his films. Thankfully to those resposible for trascribing all of his writings and materials this book will also help.

                                            5 out of 5 stars A simple introduction to a complex man........1999-11-10

There is no better way to get into the mindset of Fellini than through his own words. This unassuming book is full of the director's thoughts and motivations. From behind the scene anectdotes to descriptions of scenes never filmed this is an excellent place to start learning about the movie world's best director ever!

                                              Book Description

The films of Federico Fellini (1920-1993) dealt equally with truth-tellers and pretenders, realists and fabulists. His colorful, surreal vision of cinema is so distinctive that the term "Felliniesque" is common among film buffs, even those who have not seen any of his films. This collection of interviews spans the director's entire career from 1957 to 1993.

Fellini began making films shortly after World War II working in a style similar to the Italian neorealists Roberto Rossellini and Vittorio De Sica, but he soon distinguished himself from them by introducing elements of his dreams into his movies. While his earlier masterpieces—such as I Vitelloni, La Strada, and The Nights of Cabria—are realistic in setting and plot, his post-1960 films are baroque and surrealist. Even 8½, one of his recognized masterpieces and widely regarded as a veiled autobiography, is deeply fantastical.

Fellini used his feverish imagination in interviews as well. His friends and enemies alike were quick to call him a bugiardo—a big liar. It is perhaps more accurate to note that, as in his films, Fellini understood the inherent theatricality of all performance, including the interview form, and that artifice is just as revealing as plain truth. In his conversations with interviewers and the media, he often blurred the line between factual truth and sheer invention.

                                              Book Description

“Trenchant in its critical analysis, absorbing and sympathetic in its account of his private life, Kezich’s Fellini is a revelation. It effaces virtually everything written to date about the Italian maestro . . . This engrossing biography mirrors its subject. It’s affectionate, garrulous and often rambling, and in sudden flashes of brilliance it offers a penetrating view of Fellini’s life and art.” —Peter Cowie, The Nation

“Few writers are able to approach Fellini with the privilege of intimate experience and friendship . . . Kezich fills the pages of this biography with uncommon detail and artistry, presenting a chronicle that weaves life with film, fact with fantasy, in a style reminiscent of the great director’s avant-garde style . . . For the aficionado of Fellini’s works, this narrative of his life provides a sea of subtle, precious anecdotes. To those yet unacquainted with the Italian master, the book is an introduction not only to the man’s life, but his art, also. It’s a captivating read.” —Karoun Demirjian, The Christian Science Monitor

“Kezich’s forty-year friendship with the maestro allows him to offer up an intimate and lively portrait of Fellini filled with revealing anecdotes and psychological insight.” —Michel Ciment, author of Kubrick and Kazan on Kazan

2 out of 5 stars Hagiography, not biography.......2006-04-26

Tullio Kezich claims to have been a long time friend of Federico Fellini and perhaps that's one of the several reasons this biography is very disappointing.

Kezich approaches his subject as an insider, someone who shared the same social circle and perhaps artistic pretensions. (Kezich is descibed as a film critic, author of numerous boks on cinema and a playwright.)

The book is worshipful of Fellini, talks a lot about parties, drops a lot of names, but gives precious little information about Fellini. What information it does provide reads more like a campaign tract for sainthood. Comments such as "[t]he grief over his death is indescribable" add nothing to our understanding of Fellini as man or artist.

The situation is not helped by Kezich's writing style which, charitably, can only be described as bloated and pretentious. Perhaps the blandness is partly due to translation. Paragraphs run on forever, sentences are often incomplete and reminiscent of a high school student trying really, really hard to be impressive.

Amazingly, for a book about one of the greatest of all film makers, there is not a single photograph. Likewise the author presumes that any one reading the book will remember every detail of Fellini's films, most of which I haven't seen in 30 years or so.

I had hoped for a biography that would lead me into Fellini's life and mind. Instead all I got was a list of parties he went to and some fluffly, adulatory prose about great his movies were. I already knew that --- I wanted to know more about Fellini made such great movies. Not in this book.

                                                Book Description

Born in New Mexico at the end of World War I, Bluefeather Fellini is half-Pueblo Indian and half-Italian. Throughout his life, Bluefeather enjoys roaming and seeking his fortunes elsewhere, but he is always drawn back to Taos, the home of his Indian mother. During times of danger, he is visited by Dancing Bear, his spirit guide, who interjects ageless humor into situations when needed. And his Aunt Tulip Everhaven usually has a brew made from sagebrush that helps Bluefeather put his troubles into perspective.

"[Max Evans is] a sage voice of the West."--The New York Times

The narrative tone changes dramatically to describe Bluefeather's participation in D-Day and the subsequent push into Germany in harrowing, unsentimental detail; these nearly surreal passages are war writing at its best. . . . a highly engaging epic."--Publishers Weekly

"A strong sense of place permeates the text; the high-desert world of northern New Mexico provides realistic and spiritual elements that add mythic quality to a leisurely-told tale with a large cast of colorful characters. This is a work of peculiar power."--Library Journal

This classic of American fiction tells the story of the travels of Bluefeather Fellini, a half-Pueblo Indian and half-Italian who always returns to his mother's home of Taos, New Mexico.

Given the numerous volumes already been dedicated to Fellini's cinematic genius, one wonders if there is anything new to say about the man who invented the `paparazzi', put Anita Ekberg in the Trevi Fountain and a rhinocerous in a boat. But given that few have ever watched `La Dolce Vita' without scratching their heads about the big fish at the end, this new book by Chris Wiegand comes as a welcome read.

The book takes us on a whirlwind journey through Fellini's life, from his birth in Rimini in 1920 to the cutting edge of fashionable Italian life. Like Paris in the 20s or Berlin in the 30s, Rome was the place to be in the 50s. And Federico Fellini was the unquestionably the man who showed us how sweet and ugly Roman life was (most notably in `La Dolce Vita' and `81/2'). Fellini's later, more `interesting' work is also given equal consideration, despite being rather unfashionable and clearly less accomplished.

On first inspection, Wiegand's book has all the hallmarks of a beautiful-pictures-no-content coffee table book (though without the typically astronomical price-tag). However, what actually makes this book a real delight is the text. Most previous efforts have been dense, rather offputting volumes, but the tone here strikes a shrewd balance between anecdote and more serious analysis, neither overloading us with rumour and revelation nor coming across as chin-strokingly academic. The strongest parts of the book deal with Fellini's emergence and embracing of his role as observer of human desires and idiosyncrasies. Wiegand's uncomplicated handling of Fellini's relationship with his own image and the often misunderstood symbolism in his work is particularly insightful.

Ultimately, Fellini emerges as the colourful ringmaster who not only lived his dreams but put them on film for the rest of the world to enjoy. Like the man himself, `Federico Fellini: The Complete Films' is a compulsive and fascinating read both for newcomers and cinephiles alike.

                                                  So anyway, about the fish...

                                                      Book Description

A catalog of a delightful and very Felliniesque drawings by the master Italian film director, now on view in conjunction with a film festival at the Guggenheim Museum, New York
Federico Fellini, the master of the Italian art film, was an active visual artist for whom drawing was integral to the creative process. Fellini's funny, grotesque and irreverent sketches of faces, voluptuous women, costumes and larger scenes Fellini fans will recognize reveal an obsession with line and form. Rarely viewed sketches for his films, excerpts from his illustrated dream journals, and a late body of erotic drawings set new, ever larger boundaries for the Fellini vision. Fellini's lifelong affinity for the comic strip is seen in a range of works which were conceived as films but ultimately realized as strips and graphic books. The remarkable body of drawings, cartoons, and caricatures in this catalogue attest to the primacy of drawing in his technique and provides a new insight into the working mind of a film genius.
