Book Description
While searching for shelter from a rainstorm, a little faery named Sneezle is pursued by a band of strange creatures with wooden swords. They're not faeries, they're not goblins...in fact, he doesn't know what they are. With their long sticklike limbs, gnarled faces, and mouths full of knife-sharp teeth, they aren't like anything the denizens of Old Oak Wood have ever seen. Sneezle barely escapes, but another band of the ugly little creatures chases him out of the safety of the woods. Fleeing for his life, the little faery is forced to find refuge in a place that is almost as frightening as the stick men themselves -- in an old stone cottage at the edge of the forest. It is here that Sneezle must confront his greatest adventure and biggest fear.
In The Faeries of Spring Cottage, fans of young Sneezle will be delighted to see that their reluctant hero is journeying out of Old Oak Wood (even if it is against his will) and encountering humans for the first time, as well as other enchanting, mysterious -- and sometimes scary -- new beings. This dazzling collaboration between renowned doll maker Wendy Froud and award-winning writer Terri Windling introduces a host of magical new characters, including a strange faery court beneath a kitchen sink, rat-faery warriors, and faery dolls that magically come to life. Art-directed by Brian Froud, creator of Good Faeries/Bad Faeries, this latest volume in the Sneezle series captures the diminutive hero on his latest adventure in vivid detail.
Following the success of Wendy Froud and Terri Windling's first two Sneezle stories, A Midsummer Night's Faery Tale and The Winter Child, this new volume opens the magical window of enchantment once more with an extraordinary combination of story and art. The Faeries of Spring Cottage is destined to charm and captivate lovers of fairy tales, fantasy literature, and all things Froudian.

Wendy Froud and Terri Windling are masters of the Whimsical..........2005-08-17
You feel as though youre peaking into a magical world...cohorting with magical beings and caught in a realm that was lost to your childhood....
I have all the books by these two talented artists/writers...
They have a special place in my collection....they inspire, infuse imagination and you just cant put them down...takes hours to look at the images which jump right off the pages!
5 stars is just too little a review for these books...Winter Child and A MidSummers Night Fearie Tale are also among my favorites!!! You will love them too! ;)
Best one yet in the series.......2003-07-09
Here is the third (and in my opinion)and the best adventure yet in the Sneezle series written by Terri Windling and with beautiful artwork by the doll maker Wendy Froud. In this new adventure, Sneezlewort Rowanberry Rootmuster Boggs the Seventh, who is a tree root faery, is on his way to tell the King Oberon news about these violent twig type looking creatures that have been attacking the creatures that live in the forest. But by accident, Sneezle is taken to a humans house instead! Sneezle is very frightened, he has never seen a human, much less been in their house. Sneezle needs to get out of this humans cottage but how? I will leave the rest for you to find out when you buy this book and read it but I will tell you that you are in for many nice and beautiful surprises because this book truly is a work of art and I would recomend you buy it.

It was just okay.......2006-11-06
Alec Landers, future Earl of Sherbourne, is haunted by a traumatic past: the rape and brutal murder of his Scottish mother. With the belief that another clan was behind it, Alec returned to England to live with his English father, all the while nurturing his hatred of everything Scottish because of the loss of his mother. But one thing he could never get out of his mind was the Scottish girl who captured his boyish love and affection.
Now a grown man, Alec's orders are to return to Gilmuir, the home of his mother's people, and oversee the construction of Fort William. Alec arrives at Fort William to find the once powerful McRae clan reduced to a handful of old and young starving people, and Leitis, his boyhood love, without home and family.
Despite their hatred and distrust of him, Alec knows that he is the only hope for his mother's people. The only solution is to move the McRae clan to a safer place. To do that, he must risk all to ensure their safety.
I thought this book was just okay. There wasn't anything spectacular about it or even earth shattering. The plot was simple and predictable, even the characters seemed a bit one-dimensional.
If you want to read this story, I suggest borrowing a copy from the library to read before you make a purchase.
A disappointment!.......2005-05-11
I was quite looking forward to this book. I had been a fan of Ranney for about four years although I had only read one book, After The Kiss, a terrific book. I looked forward to reading this book from the prologue, which sounded quite interesting; however the novel just went downhill.
The hero and heroine are supposed to be strong characters, and I was rooting for them in the beginning but then the hero changed and there were many inconsistencies between his behaviour as The Raven and that of Colonel Landers. And it seemes that the character himself seemed not to take his behaviour so seriously although most of it was opposed to his role of Colonel. Leitis also didn't seem to question the sudden arrival of this Raven, which is weird. Here comes a man that says that he is a McRae that you haven't met and you are so willing to take everything to he says without much questioning.
I just don't think that the story was well planned, there were too many changes that occurred without me seeing how it developed within the story line. There are too many serious inconsistencies from the introduction of the characters to the their role in the book that just cannot be ignored.
Absolutely wonderful!!!.......2003-12-09
This book was absolutley wonderful!! I read reviews here on Amazon about Karen Ranney and decided to giver her Scottish Lord's series a try. So, I bought all four of them and couldnt wait to start them. I was not dissappointed! One Man's Love is a beautiful story. The ending, while bittersweet, couldnt have ended any other way than it did, and it brought tears to my eyes. Ian and Lietus are a beautiful couple and shared such an intimate history that more than once it made my eyes misty. I felt for Lietus, when she didnt understand her attraction to The Butcher and her love for Ian. To feel that way for two men has to be a disconcerting feeling, to say the least. Mrs. Ranney made me feel like I was a part of the book and like I was there going through it all with the Scots. The loss of Lietus's family and Ian's mother made me remember that at a time in history things like that actually did happen to the Scots. This book showed a great respect for the history of the Scottish people, while telling a beautiful romance. A great read and another to add to my never ending pile of favorites. Now on to book two of the Scottish Lord's series!
LOVE, LOVE, LOVE.......2003-08-02
This story oozes love. You know the mother loves Alec, you know Alec loves Leitis, and you know the MacRaes love their Scotland. You are never in doubt.
Alec is tormented from the battlefield and battles within himself. Leitis is tormented by her losses. The clan is tormented by the threat of extinction. Everything and everybody come together in a desire for preservation.
Ranney treats the characters and the setting lovingly and respectfully. The reader leaves the story educated about the historical period, awed by strength of the Scottish people, and warmed by the love Alec and Leitis share.
annoying heroine.......2003-07-07
The heroine of this book was irritating. The writer tried to make her seem headstrong and strong willed but she was really just rather stupid to provoke men who were much more powerful than she so openly. She was just extremely lucky that the hero was a good guy and stopped her from getting hurt. She tries to defend men who are complete cowards and just cause trouble and let her take the consequences. There was zero chemistry and the you just don't care about the characters.

I thought that the combination ..........2007-03-07
... of two of my favorite things (Piers Anthony and porn) would result in a stimulating read. I was wrong. This book, in spite of its impressive creativity, is better fodder for adolescent snickering than adult entertainment. I actually gave my copy away, and I'm a Piers collector. It didn't deserve to sit on my bookshelf next to the Geodyssey series. Read THAT if you want some excellent Piers Anthony.
Different.......2006-12-25
This is not typical Piers Anthony, but it was still hard to put down, just like all of his books.
please read.......2006-11-03
If you like Piers Anthony and you aren't offended by radical departures from traditional mores, you'll love this. Very funny, though not as thought provoking as Heinlein's material on the same subjects. It was a little less tightly written, from a plot perspective, than Piers' more traditional fantasy and sci-fi
The reviewer who said he/she wasn't uptight, but that the book is about orifices, ...I suspect is uptight. THE REST OF THE REVIEWERS NEED TO LEARN TO CONVEY A SENSE OF THE BOOK WITHOUT GIVING AWAY PLOT ELEMENTS.
A short story, a quick read.......2006-03-17
As a kid I really enjoyed the Piers Anthony Xanth series, so I figured I would probably enjoy the writing style of this book. Unfortunately I think my tastes have changed in 20 years. While the book was entertaining for the most part, I have to agree with the other reviewers: It was written for children, or probably more specifically, "the child in all of us". It was also a very quick read. Parts of the story, including a major plot feature (I won't spoil it) felt very tacked on (and as it turns out, that feature was tacked on, according to the author's notes at the end). I give it 2 stars: It did cover unusual sexual territory, as promised, but fell quite short on actual adult entertainment.
Pornucopia.......2005-12-20
As a Piers Anthony fan I was very disappointed with this book. I was forewarned of the humorously sexual nature of the book. As a mature, sexually secure adult, I expected an adult, amusing story about penis envy. The humor and sexuality of the book is written at 9-year-old boy "potty talk" level-- enthrallment with human excretement of any type from every orifice. Freudians would have a heyday with Piers revealed psychotically love/hate obsession with anal sex.
I was not amused. It was not sexually titillating. It was base and revolting. This book could have been fun and entertaining but instead it was just potty talk.

Are there hidden words and messages within the Hebrew text of the Bible? Who hid them there? What is their purpose? Author and mathematician R. Edwin Sherman presents startling, never-before-seen evidence of these codes and their significance for the world today. In this informative and entertaining new book, the astonishing contents of over 200 lengthy codes are translated by Dr. Nathan Jacobi, one of the worlds leading experts on Bible codes. Unlike other books on this topic, most of the codes presented in this book are so lengthy that they could not be coincidental. For example, while it may be possible to find Messiah as a code in an ordinary book, the chances of finding the longer code, you will cry out for the blood of the Messiah, are extremely small. A mathematician with 30 years of experience in probability and statistical analysis, Mr. Sherman explains clearly how codes show that the Bible is indeed inspired by God.

Bible Codes... Something to Think About.......2007-02-01
Bible Codes, a subect for the open minded, have fast become a subject of controversy to some and hope to others. Since my introduction to the codes I have bought programs, books, and haunted the net for more info and opinions plus learning some basic Hebrew, all because I am truly fascinated! Much is said about skeptics becoming believers including the authors of Bible Code Bombshell. This book puts forth over 300 codes referencing the life of Jesus and would have you believe that God did indeed write the Hebrew Bible. Even if you remain skeptical about that, the book could go a long way in convincing you that "something" extraterrestrial or otherwise, knew a lot about our history that had yet to happen. If you are a person who needs statistics for assurance, you will find them here. Any way you look at it, it is a fascinating subject and the book gives you a lot to consider regardless of your religious or philosophical bent. I suggest you read it with an open mind.
Another Bird Singing..........2007-01-26
This book is a God send. The original author of the Bible code did nothing to address Jesus, which obviously this author did. I have also.
I didn't use the Hebrew version, but the English version that was available online from Researchsystems I did a search using YAHWEH, with JESUS, and got a matrix that had the word YAHWEH twice in the form of a cross. With JESUS under the cross. I think that this is more than a coincidence.
This was written, fabulously.

Nonsense "codes" presented as proof .......2006-11-10
This book makes the claim of being a "bombshell", presenting proof of Jesus being the promised Messiah. However, Mr. Sherman supports his claims by "codes" that make no sense with respect to meaning (semantic structure). It is obvious that the Hebrew Old Testament (Tanakh) is encoded. This has been proven beyond reasonable doubt by the thorough statistical research of Eliyahu Rips, Doron Witztum, Harold Gans and others. These eminent scientists have also warned researchers of the Bible Code not to stretch the evidence to "prove" their religious convictions. Now, this is exactly what Edwin Sherman does.
How, then, is the Bible Code misused in this book? To begin with, I need to say that a few of the codes Sherman presents are both intelligible (expressing comprehensible meaning) and statistically significant (extremely unlikely to be a product of chance). The problem is that he doesn't stay there. Instead, he seeks to "read more into the codes" by extracting longer ELS strings of letters, interpreting and translating them to fit his point of view (traditional Christian Messianism). These "sensational whole-sentence codes" have a tendency of not making any sense. And why would God encode messages in the Bible if they read as gibberish? Wouldn't they be there to actually CLARIFY our confusion regarding relevant matters? Of course! Codes have to make sense to be considered as divine messages. And that is only an initial, foundational requirement. As has been proven by statistical standards far beyond most research today, there are codes in the books of the Bible. My own codes research, however, indicates that these codes go beyond traditional religion; beyond the claims of orthodoxy - Christian or Jewish, or of any other brand. Truth is not confined by dogma!
I get the impression that Sherman is out on a religious mission, garbed in the "respectable" language of science. In this pursuit, he is willing to sacrifice the credibility of his claims. What does it MEAN that the "mighty name" of Jesus is "gushing from above"? (This is a major "code" in the book). The answer is obvious: nothing or everything - depending on your agenda.
The Bible Code can be seen as a Rorsach test. People tend to see whatever they want to see in the ink stains! And what they see says something about themselves, and little - or nothing - about the Truth. This is the kind of "research" we ought to shun. As Scripture says: "And the truth shall make you free".
Sherman extracts long "codes" that make no sense, and then "prove" their authenticity by using the principles of statistics. By doing this, he actually harms his own cause - to prove the Godhood of Jesus. Statistics can only be applies to coded messages, or words, that make sense grammatically and semantically. It is easy to take almost any long string of letters in skip sequence and "prove" that it is coded. Commercially available software easily calculates "statistics" of this kind. The problem is that those statistics are produced without any consideration given to the meaning of the letter string. Thus it is the easiest thing in the world to construct "long codes" and freely project meaning onto them by "translation" of "words" in the string by applying word breaks at the desired places. If "snooping" (as it is called in statistics) is to be applied in Bible Code research, this has to be done with UTMOST care and consideration. Sherman's "bombshell" is basesd on the utter abuse of this research method. Bible Code Bombshell is just one of many "Bible Codes" books by Christian authors, seeking to prove their point by pseudoscience. Look for another book to read! There are excellent books written about the Bible Code, but this is definitely not one of them.

Sentences in the Bible codes challenges the skeptics.......2005-02-06
People new to the Bible code are always looking for answers as to the validity of code findings. That's really the core question that anyone should ask, "Whether the findings are scientifically significant or whether the code critics have a valid point?" Ed Sherman's book addresses that core question directly with tangible results--the development of long ELS terms that are phrases and sentences versus early Bible code findings that were by and large individual words as terms. He shows that while the Bible code critics may have had a valid point in the 90's with matrices that were simplistic with single-word terms, today's level of code findings with terms as sentences completely destroys the critics' objections. The skeptics have now been largely disproven. For that reason alone, Bible Code Bombshell deserves a read by anyone seriously inquiring into the Bible code itself.
However, one can still find an abundance of websites on the internet where beginner-level codes researchers are still doing simplistic matrices with single-word terms. I would never discourage these enthusiastic beginner-level codes researchers, since all matrix development starts that way. Yet, the casual reader ought to be wary of websites making fantastic claims; but whose matrices are comprised of single-word terms. The fact is that their matrices just aren't well-developed enough to know whether what they have found is statistically significant or randomness. If randomness, then of course their claims are invalid until the matrix is further developed enough to know whether it corroborates or disproves their earlier claims.
The value of Bible Code Bombshell is that it provides the mathematical underpinnings for one to judge validity (mainly in the appendices), and at the same time addresses common sense issues like, 'does the long term make sense?' That last question ought to be primary. For example, if someone came up with a lengthy Bible code term in a matrix on the theme of Thomas Edison, that read, "He invented the lightbulb. Spaceships travel throughout the galaxy. Many people don't eat enough vegetables. He invented the phonograph."; we would read that and say to ourselves that it looks grammatically correct, yet parts of it are entirely out of place with the theme of Thomas Edison. And we would be correct in our conclusion. I think Ed Sherman addresses the issue well in his book, of the 'common sense' test.
The subtitle of Bible Code Bombshell: Compelling Scientific Evidence That God Authored the Bible tells us that Ed Sherman has matrices on the topic of God in the Bible code in his book. He does have those matrices. Yet I think that a few well-developed and statistically significant open matrices does not fully prove the thesis; but then again Mr. Sherman says "compelling evidence" and not "irrefutable proof", so he backs up his claim without hyperbole.
Buy and read Bible Code Bombshell.
Controversial Codes from the Bible.......2004-12-01
This is a substantive book on an intriguing and highly controversial subject. The skeptic, curious, and serious students on this topic should have their interest piqued with the thoroughness, reliability, and credibility of the author's research, documentation, presentation, and unequivocal conclusions.
Although the author is a consulting mathematician with 30 years of experience, he has wisely relegated the math to appendices at the end, making it an easy-to-read book. It addresses the most commonly asked questions about Bible codes on the basis of five years of intensive scientific research. The research team includes a Jewish agnostic, who is a retired professor of mathematics and physics and a part time Hebrew teacher.
The process of systematically extracting encoded messages has produced a wealth of reliable results that have withstood the test of rigorous scientific analyses, including a companion search in the Hebrew text of "War and Peace", as a control for comparison.
What adds credibility to these claims is that some of these equidistant letter sequences (ELSs) are quite lengthy, and much of the related information appears tightly packed together as in a crossword puzzle, sometimes appearing as a cross. The longer the string (encoded message), the less likely it is coincidental. Therefore, the conclusion is that many of these messages were intentionally coded.
But, what do Jews think of the encoding of Jesus in the Old Testament as the long awaited Messiah? Then, how about the fascinating discoveries relevant to 9/11, as you catch the sense of excitement in the quest for any codes surrounding that event; and they are there!
Yes, there are limitations; codes are not time dated, who is speaking to whom, what viewpoint is being expressed, what do some of the messages mean; but, then again, any inquisitive reader will want to investigate the merit of the claims of this book. I did and was not disappointed.

Customer Reviews:
The best cookbook I've ever used.......2006-03-25
The book is perfectly titled - the recipes are foolproof. Without exception, every dish that I have made following the step-by-step directions and photo illustrations has been delicious. My wok is now my most used kitchen pan, followed closely by the pressure cooker.
Excellent introduction to Chinese Techniques.......2004-02-01
If this were the average large format, small page count introductory book on some cooking subject, I would not give it a second look, even with the blurb on the front stating that the author has had over a million copies sold. But, I ran across the author's name cited in `Pot on the Fire' by John Thorne, who cited him, Ken Hom, as quite an authority on Chinese cooking. Hom has published quite a few longer, presumably deeper books on Chinese cooking, but most of these appear from Amazon.com to be out of print or otherwise not immediately available. So, I am check out this very presumptuously titled book, `Foolproof Chinese Cooking'.
The first clue that this book has much to offer is the fact that the author is not your average restaurant chef or journalist who happens to specialize in writing about Chinese food. His dust jacket biography states that he is widely regarded as one of the world's greatest authorities on Chinese and other Asian cooking. I have read his book and I am entirely willing to believe the publisher's buildup.
Hom appears to be the BBC counterpart to Martin Yan on PBS, as this book is the companion to a BBC food series and he has done several other such books / TV series.
If you have any interest in the techniques of Chinese cooking, this book is for you, especially if you do not have a lot of experience with Chinese techniques. I say this not only because this book is so good, but also because many other highly regarded Chinese cookbooks are not that accessible to newbie Chinese cooks. I don't say this because important books on, for example, French cuisine are so accessible, but because the average American simply has no exposure to this style of cooking outside of the occasional Food Network show and Martin Yan's shows which, I confess, do not show up on my local PBS station.
The current volume succeeds primarily because it does not try to do too much, and what it does, it does very well. It is not limited to stir-frying and it is not limited to Cantonese or Sichuan cuisine. What it does is give you the Jaques Pepin step by step, picture by picture presentation of a goodly number of basic techniques. It starts with a basic chicken stock which, based on my just having made a French style chicken stock, I can say is right on target, without being too fussy. It avoids, for example, the step which recommends that you blanche the chicken before cooking, while being very careful to have you not bring the preparation to a boil to maintain a clear stock. By the way, the Chinese chicken stock is different from a French stock in that it includes ginger and garlic and excludes the French mirepoix. The book follows up with several recipes for soups before getting into the details of stir-frying.
The book includes many classic Chinese dishes, including Peking duck, chow mein, fried wontons, lemon chicken, and sweet and sour pork.
I think this cannot be the only Chinese cookbook you will need, but it should certainly be your first. Highly recommended.
Good to start on, but not enough on meat..........2003-08-27
This is one of the two cookbooks I got just a month ago (I never cooked before then...). I am 22 and was moving into my own apt, and had to cook for myself, how scary huh?
This book made it all so simple. I mean, with chinese cooking, every dish is so similar that you don't need to buy ingredients specific to every single dish (unlike the american cuisine book I got). All the dishes in here are simple, fast, and best yet, tasty! Great book to start on.
My only complaint is that it leaves you wanting more... there is only one recipe for beef and, not counting the roasted pork, one dish for pork, not enough at all.
If you are a first time cooker and interested in chinese food, knock yourself out with this book, and this comment has some merits because I'm chinese and have been eating chinese food all my life, AUTHENTICATE chinese food too!
overly simple.......2003-07-04
This is a good cookbook for beginners, or those who do not have access to a wide variety of Chinese ingredients. However, it doesn't have enough going on to hold the attention of more experienced cooks. Most dishes are flavored with ginger, garlic, soy sauce, and rice wine--and not much else. Like many other British-published cookbooks I've had, it is stripped to the minimum. Still, it's a good primer, with clear instructions and good pictures.
A Great Way to Learn the Basics of Chinese Cooking.......2002-09-21
If you love eating out for Chinese and have always wondered how they prepared some of those wonderful dishes, this is the book for you. Ken Hom offers some great lessons for the novice on Chinese cooking in this cookbook. Every recipe I've tried has been a guaranteed mouthwatering success. The Sichuan braised fish is out of this world!
Give it a go!
Book Description
The dream of pure freedom in the South Pacific islands has never died on the mainland; sometimes its more of an ache than a dream. Over time and through the mill of popular culture, the dream has been distilled into two enduring images: the hula dancer and the tiki god. This book displays over 500 color images of collectible hula dancers and tiki gods with which readers can have a little exotic fun and maybe catch a tropical thrill along the way. The hula dance provided an escape in its original culture, and here the dancers are shown in sections devoted to flat images, three-dimensions, crank girls, and Hollywoods versions from the twentieth century. The tiki gods that 1960s surfers wore for luck around their necks may have deeper meanings as well, and became the most important symbol of cool adulthood that mainland youngsters could imagine. Here lamps, figures, posters, and souvenirs all come together for entertainment and enjoyment. All dreamers of tropical pleasures will covet copies of this book to linger over. And the values guide will bring them quickly and happily back to reality.

Hula Dancers and Tiki Gods.......2001-04-29
There's no way this book should be listed under Home and Garden. Someone tell me why it is. Hula Dancers and Tiki Gods boasts over 500 color images of Hawaiiana collectibles. Pfouts' purpose is clear: It's all about fun. He claims he's not out to teach anyone anything. And then he goes ahead and does it anyway. Hula Dancers offers a great store of information and photos. Pfouts gives a clear picture of how the hula dancer and the tiki god came to symbolize so much to so many. He covers a wide range of Hula collectibles through four sections: flat hula treasures that includes postcards, paintings, pulp art, cocktail napkins, carnival sideshow art, decals, playing cards, tattoos, etc; the three-dimensional section brings the lovely ladies to life as figurines, salt and pepper shakers, plaster sculptures, drinking vessels, killer lamps and more; the vintage crank girls in the third section offer the reader a rare chance to see dainty little ladies who shimmy with a quick twist and the Hollywood section show how movie posters, album covers, photos and sheet music brought the hula into greater public view. The tiki gods portion of the book offers up information and photos on everything tiki, including swizzel sticks, mugs, pendants, bookends and furniture to die for. Combined with his entertaining commentary and assessments on what some of these collectibles are worth today, Hula Dancers and Tiki Gods leaves a lasting impression of the depth and availability of Hawaiiana out there.

A good resource.......2007-07-15
When you call something a curriculum, I imagine it contains lesson plans and other specifics. This book doesn't. Many people prefer to add in their own structure and details, and if so they can get a great deal from Nebel's book. Personally, I found the initial chapters on teaching to be very helpful. I'm keeping the book solely to re-read them. The organization of the themes made little sense to me, and some of the material covered seemed narrow in its scope.
So, I recommend Nebel's Elementary Ed as a how to teach book. The lists of resources after each chapter are also very nice, though since many are websites and the book was published in 2001 I don't know how many of those are still extant.
A Great Homeschooling Resource!.......2006-07-17
My nine-year-old son is a budding scientist, and he has little patience with the more language arts- based curricula ususally offered. Nebel's has provided an alternative that has made him a more eager student, and me a more relaxed and happy teacher!
The book has a framework for all the basic subjects that should be covered in elementary school, along with suggested websites, over 200 experiments and many ideas for getting the points across. The first chapter, "Teaching Strategies", is very valuable.
The book is non-sectarian, with no disrespect for religion or the lack thereof, so it can be used by anyone.
Excellent Education Book with Emphasis on Science.......2006-05-07
I stumbled across this book when I asked the Well Trained Mind Discussion Board to recommend a program to introduce my kids to fundamentals of economics. Two people recommended "Nebels", which I googled searched, found, and purchased.
I was quite surprised that economics is just one chapter. But it is an excellent introduction, and is indicative of all the other interesting ideas in this book.
The book begins with a discussion of teaching strategies, and it is interesting to see that as a homeschooling parent, I am providing the first three methods in spades - lecturing, hands-on activities, and coaching. However, my children are not experiencing much in the way of "seminaring", or small group discussions. Reading his section, I can see how valuable this would be for my children - to help my son communicate his ideas orally and help my daughter learn to listen to others patiently and thoughtfully.
After the first chapter, the Nebels book is divided into themes.
The first theme is "Communication", which discusses strategies for teaching reading, writing and fine arts. I do wish this chapter discussed oral communication as well - recitations, public speaking, presentations.
The second theme is "Values, Purpose, History and Society", which contains three chapters. The first chapter is on virtues/values/justice. It doesn't really discuss history, other than to say use a timeline, make history relevant, and check out various scope/sequences such as the Core Knowledge Curriculum and state standards. I would also suggest the Well-Trained Mind as an excellent resource.
The next chapter is on "Economics: Exchanging Goods and Services"; and the next on "Government and Leadership". These chapters are not textbooks that tell you exactly how and what to teach, but rather guidelines that urge you to cover certain concepts and material.
So far, this covers about 25% of the book.
The rest of the book is a wonderful science text, the three themes are "Discovering our Planet Earth" (4 chapters), "Water Wonders" (1 chapter), and "Physical Forces and Principles" (4 chapters). These chapters are very specific in the material to be covered and the methods to help children experientially learn the concepts/ideas.
There is also an interesting theme/chapter on "Numerical Skills" which discusses mathematical concepts a child should learn by the end of elementary school. This is not a math program in itself, but you can compare the math program you are using to the ideas in this chapter to make sure you are covering your bases and that the child can apply math in a practical way.
All in all, I think this is a very interesting and valuable book. I am surprised this book is not more widely known among homeschoolers.
Fabulous!.......2003-02-19
I bought Nebel's Elementary Education on an impulse and have been most impressed with Dr. Nebel's educational philosophy and his ideas on implementing them into a child's life. The science education that most children recieve is dismal. I am most grateful that I have Nebel's Elementary Education to help me along the way to guide my children in discovering the world around them. If you are looking for a book to help you help your child learn reading, writing, math, government, and a broad range of science areas then this is it!
Finally! A curriculum strong in science!.......2002-10-13
I am homeschooling a gifted 5 year old who is intensely science-oriented. Every science curriculum I've looked at is either way too easy for him (the typical elementary school curriculum) or too reading/writing oriented (the typical middle school curriculum). I am delighted to have found Nebel's Elementary Education. It provides a strong and well-balanced curriculum overall, but especially so in the sciences. The science portions are simply the most complete and challenging science curriculum I have found, while still being the kind of hands-on curriculum that an active young boy needs.
There is a strong emphasis on collections, from leaves to bugs to rocks, and learning about the enormous complexity of the natural world. What I like best is the way the inter-relationships between different areas of science are stressed. No topic is studied in isolation, and the author has taken great care to connect each topic with related topics (so instead of studying the human skeleten the student studies skeletal systems across the animal kingdom) and to connect the topics with other areas of science (for example, the physics underlying the movement of the skeletal system as muscles pull on it). This makes for an extremely strong curriculum that will undoubtedly lead to a strong understanding of the natural world.
Nebel's Elementary Education is very hands-on, tons of activities and experiments, and very flexible... the scope and sequence is similar for each grade level, with the complexity and depth of study increasing each year. This is especially helpful to me, as a homeschooler, since I will be able to include my younger children in most of the discussions and activities.
Dr. Nebel has included teaching suggestions, bulletin board and wall display ideas... there is a lot of extremely good information in this book, in addition to the actual curriculum material.

Book Description
Color is interior design's hardest-working tool. It's the one element that can alter our mood, influence the way we see space, camouflage imperfections, give us an instant taste of drama or serenity. Paint is the easiest, most effective, and most inexpensive way of achieving those effects -- the quickest, most powerful way to transform any room.
But sifting through hundreds or thousands of color chips in the paint store can be daunting. You can start with your favorite colors, or copy a scheme you saw at a neighbor's house, or play it safe and stay with the same color you already have, but that doesn't always guarantee decorating success. In Interior Style, the experts at Benjamin Moore share more than 100 years of know-how and advice on what does generate success. Chapter by chapter, color family by color family, Interior Style explains how anyone can master the art of using color. Rich photographs of interiors take the guesswork our of choosing a palette and pairing colors because each is matched to specific Benjamin Moore paints.
Interior Style explores the properties of color; how it behaves in both natural and artificial light; how colors look next to one another -- within a room, from room to room, or in conjunction with furnishings; how to incorporate neutrals, whites and off-whites without becoming bland; how to use extreme, bold colors without being overpowered; how any other color palette can be used in your home. Plus, in a special how-to section Benjamin Moore's technical experts share their practical know-how.

Too much money for too little.......2005-11-10
This book could have been much more, it could have given the customers requirement, the methods used or even the thought process of the designer. What you have is a coffee table book, not even brain food, as most of the designs went out in the nineties. The book is too full of itself and makes no attempt to help the reader. Next time I know to avoid Cheryl Cullens books
A Showcase Of Great Designs.......2005-05-20
Another great inspirational book from Rockport. True designers, like myself, are always on the lookout for any current eye candy. All the designs are from a "real world" view point.
Great.......2002-11-24
I totally disagree with the other reviewer. After getting burned on many design purchases, this one is large size (sometimes they look full size and show up small enough to put in your pocket), THICK and FULL of great design. I've been designing professionally for over 10 years and this book has some wonderful work in it. The main reason I buy these is to get some "brain food" and this book is full of it. Better than version 5 and 4 before it. I recommend!
Decieving cover for a bad book.......2001-10-26
This is another one of those brochure books that sport a great cover, only to reveal that the content falls flat.Pretty outdated, and no information regarding the design process and
concepts. The one star is for the excellant but decieving cover.I
will definately think twice before purchasing books by Cheryl Cullen.
Another Cheryl cullen disappointment.......2001-10-26
This is one of the worst brochure design books I have ever seen. Outdated design and most of them from the United States.More like a marketing tool for Cheryl Dangel Cullen's designer friends.most of the designs dont even show the brochure covers.Another huge disappointment from Cheryl Dangel Cullen(same with Global graphics:colour and Global graphics: symbols, both of which are showcases of wrong information.)I wouldnt even give one star, but that is the bottom of the barrel!

David Nathan's life changed as an English teenager in the '60s. The agent of that shift? Records by black American singers such as Aretha Franklin, Dionne Warwick, and Nina Simone. Soon he was the head of Simone's British fan club, and in short order, became a journalist with growing access to his heroines. Over the ensuing years, Amazon.com and Billboard contributor Nathan has had Franklin bake him a peach cobbler, stood under the thrown shade of everyone from Esther Phillips to Anita Baker, and even had Miss Ross ask him to call her "Diana." The Soulful Divas captures Nathan's obsession with his favorites, providing two-layered narratives that meld career rundowns with interviews and other personal meetings with his subjects. Most of the 14 single-artist chapters are successful portraits, with the exception of Nathan's profile of Natalie Cole, whose drug problems and career resurrection in the shadow of her late father are little more than the stuff of a legend-in-her-own-mind. A dearth of material weakens a closing chapter on young divas Whitney Houston, Janet Jackson, and Toni Braxton. But Nathan also provides many invaluable, eye-opening moments, such as the story of a baseball-bat-wielding Phillips threatening to smash up the offices of a record company slow to pay royalties. Finally, he fills out the received wisdom on "X-rated" Millie Jackson, who says, "When I'm home, it's crossword puzzles, television, and the kids." Kids who no doubt, like Nathan, picked up their share of tips on life and love from Jackson and her sisters. --Rickey Wright
Book Description
The best-selling guide to the lives and work of the R&B divas, now in paperback! In The Soulful Divas, author David Nathan profiles the greatest female rhythm and blues vocalists of the past 30 years as never before with an unforgettable collection of fascinating, personal biographies. He celebrates such legendary performers as Diana Ross, Aretha Franklin, Patti LaBelle, Whitney Houston, and others in provocative, behind-the-scenes portraits based on his long-standing personal relationships with these legendary women. The result is a hugely entertaining, candid look at the ups and downs of each performer's career-as well as an intriguing view of how these unforgettable women made a powerful mark on an essentially white, male-dominated industry.
Customer Reviews:
Soulful Singing Divas.......2007-04-12
I enjoyed reading some of my favorite soulful singers such as Aretha Franklin, Diana Ross, Dionne Warwick, etc. Although I was surprised that the Diva of all Divas, the late great Miss Dinah Washington wasn't included. I hope that Mr. Nathan will write a follow-up edition and include Miss Washington, along with Mariah Carey, Jennifer Holiday, the late Minnie Riperton, and the late Mary Wells.
Mildly Entertaining.......2003-11-19
It is obvious that David Nathan truly idolizes his subjects which probably accounts for the calculated design at the end of each chapter to make sure in no uncertain terms that he has shown that subject in her best light. I can certainly empathize because many of the divas profiled are true favorites of mine. That said, soul diva aficionados will readily recognize this as a collection of all-too-familiar press clippings even the most casual follower has at least heard of. To his credit, it is indeed refreshing to hear about lesser publicized divas like Esther Phillips, Millie Jackson, Nina Simone, Doris Troy or Phylllis Hyman. And ultimately, the final chapter sketching younger divas appeared entirely too hastily thrown together with the end result being little more than an unsatisfying epilogue.
Quite honestly, if you are in to black female vocalists, this, of course, was an easy, flattering read. However, the finished product is little more than an indulgent scrapbook by a journalist who, apparently, could have shed infinitely more light on the personalities he featured, but declined or refused out of either fierce loyalty or abject fear. Not only do the subjects deserve more than this, but so does the author.
The greatest book I read in months.......2003-07-08
Great book Mr. Nathan. I loved all the subjects picked in this book(I'm sorry that I don't know Doris Troy)and thought he did a fantastic job of painting a realistic portrait of the ladies using their own words and his personal experiences with them. I never knew Chaka Khan had such a turbulent past. Oh, and Esther Phillips- that temper! I laughed so hard. Diana Ross seems pretty nice (I love her) and I do love Dionne and Nina- they are such proud women. I hope the divas in the makings can successfully carry forth the diva achievements as their foremothers have done. If there is a sequel to this, Mr. Nathan, you must include Cissy Houston, Melba Moore and Donna Summer.
'Could be subtitled "The Lord of the sing(-ers)".......2003-01-02
David Nathan KNOWS his R & B. For close to four decades, the book's author has been a contributor, in some way or another, to the production of over 500 albums of soul music. He has done countless interviews, provided liner notes for recordings, served as producer on several, and even done a little background singing. It is obvious that if anyone knows what a "diva" truly is, David Nathan is that man.
"The Soulful Divas" covers the recording careers of the ladies profiled with little snippets of their non-professional beginnings, as well as individual highs and lows. However, it's these little "peeks" into the artists' characters that make the book such a fascinating read.
Not meaning to reveal much of the text, there are many little known facts reported in each profile. Each of the women has experienced her share of failed romantic relationships, legal battles with recording companies, perceived public opinions, peaks and valleys in album sales, and personal tragedies.
Most tragic of all showcased within the pages of the expose is the late Phyllis Hyman, a diva in every sense of the word. Like Nathan, I am a fan of hers, also, and her untimely demise still brings a lump in my throat.
But, the chapter on Millie Jackson is a welcome find. Jackson is the only diva profiled that is not represented in my musical library, save for a duet album with Isaac Hayes. However, after reading about the singer's body of work, as well as her down-to-earth and honest demeanor, I think that this is about to change.
I am curious about a certain "expletive deleted" symphony that she composed.
Note for the author: The next time around, include Patti Austin in volume two.
Interesting trip to the land of soul.......2002-07-11
Great concept, terrifc subjects. I particularly appreciated the inclusion of such greats as Esther Phillips (whom is so seldom mentioned these days), Nina Simone, and Chaka Khan, in which gave me some insight to her early years with Rufus. The section on Millie, a truly under-rated singer, and the late Phyllis Hyman were also informative and worth the read. I really appreciated Nathan's straight forward and honest, yet dignified, portrayal of the all the divas, until I got to the chapter's on Aretha, Diana, and Doris Troy whom Nathan, in my opinion, showed favoritism towards. While he did an excellent job of exposing the other divas, these three he seems to take pity- Aretha the most. Adoration is understandable, but you hinted in other chapters about Aretha's less than royal behaviors, while in her chapter she was almost hailed as a saint! Same goes for Miss Ross. Friend or not, Doris Troy could and should have been replaced with the likes of Candi Staton or Mavis Staples.
Overall, the book is a delightful read and I would look forward to a part two, highlighting the likes of soulful artists like, Stephanie Mills, Minnie Riperton, Melba Moore, Candi and Mavis to name a few....

Just when you think you know it all.......2003-10-30
Whitney Houston is rarely out of the tabloids, so it is tempting to think one knows all there is to know about her. Leave it to Mr. Parish to get beyond the headlines with a fascinating look at this major talent. It is a well-researched look at Whitney Houston, her family (esp mother Cissy) and an era of pop music in which she came of age. From the projects to mansions we follow every step of her rise to the top (including set-backs along the way). This is also a well-rounded look at her marriage to Bobby Brown, a marriage that has continued to defy predictions of doom. Whether a fan or not this is a highly readable book.

Whitney Houston: the Biography By James Robert Parish.......2003-10-29
This was one I could not put down untill I finished it. Completely up to date, covers her life, rise to fame, and ends on trip to Israel. Mr. Parish has walked the tightrope of keeping his feelings out the book, but still gives warts and all. Has a couple of pictures I never saw before, and is very quick moving as books of this type go. Learned some new things about my favorite DIVA!

The Greatest Disappointment of All.......2003-04-30
Oh please, read the book, wasn't thrilled. It had it's amusing points, but I think that Mr. Ammons has a vendetta against Whitney and this is the payback. I am no where near a Whitney houston fan and I read this with the intention of having more fuel to add to my fire- but this was no kerosene. I often got the impression that though this was supposed to be a "tell-all", Mr. Ammons was reluctant to diverge a lot of information he could have told. Maybe he's saving that for a follow-up, who knows? who cares? This book is best left in the store.
What a joke?.......2001-09-04
Sounds to me like Kevin wrote this book to make a quick buck and to get back at Regina. And Kevin was just as scanless as Regina he had a wife and children, however, was having an affair with Regina because of the promise of a record deal. Most of the things that were written about Whitney was not original. I could have wrote this book myself based on gathering information from previous articles written on Whitney. He should have wrote a novel about him and Regina and their scanless ways. I am glad that I waited for this book to come out in paper.
I enjoyed this book.......2001-01-28
I enjoyed this book on Whitney Houston and I know personally that a lot of what Kevin Ammons says in the book is true. I took away one star, as the latter part of the book sounds like research and not first hand knowledge.
Exploitation of a star for a quick buck.......1999-11-30
I wanted to read a biography on one of my favorite singers that will give a realistic, yet, smart look on her life. Good Girl, Bad Girl is nothing but a piece of trash written by a man who either wanted to get back on Whitney for something, or was looking to make a quick buck at her expense. I am aware that celebrity lives behind the spotlight might not be wonderful---but I still feel that they are entitled to their privacy. I am so glad I didn't buy this book, I returned it to my friend the very next day, I didn't bother to finish it.
A well written book on Whitney Houston ........1999-03-22
Good girl, Bad girl was a well written book on Whitney Houston, but unfortunately the book was unauthorized and none of us know if any of the information was true. I will say that many of his comments were true, I know because I am a true Whitney Houston fan. Getting to the contents of the rest of the book I liked it,Ammons words seemed truely sincere he seemed to know information only some one close to Whitney would know. I gave this book 2 stars, because it is an unauthorized, so for that I took I took away some stars.
