Book Description
"Rivals anything Chaim Potok has ever produced. It is a book written with passion about passion. You're not likely to read anything better this year."
THE DETROIT NEWS
Twenty years have passed for Asher Lev. He is a world-renowned artist living in France, still uncertain of his artistic direction. When his beloved uncle dies suddenly, Asher and his family rush back to Brooklyn--and into a world that Asher thought he had left behind forever....
Customer Reviews:
Good, but not as much as the first........2007-09-15
My first introduction to the brilliant Chaim Potok was his novel, My Name is Asher Lev, the story of a Ladover Hasidic Jew, conflicted and divided by religion and art. In, The Gift of Asher Lev, the artist is grown, older--still conflicted--and now the father of two children and a husband of a Holocaust survivor. His own father has traversed the ladder and his now the right-hand-man of the Landover Rebbe.
When Lev's uncle dies, Asher returns to Brooklyn, family in tow. It's here that his conflict matures. In his return, we see how years of fame and maturity have impacted Asher Lev's mind and changed his view of home, his artistic and religious beginnings.
The Gift of Asher Lev is not fast paced action. This story is not the stuff of commercial best sellers. It's about life and art and perspective. It's reflection and internal conflict. I see part of myself in Asher Lev and his conflict, or I see Asher Lev in me. And Chaim Potok's use of repetition, foreshadowing, and peephole luminance of a world foreign to me is wonderful. He's reminded me that in writing is art, and his writing is beautiful craftsmanship.
I highly recommend My Name is Asher Lev, followed by The Gift of Asher Lev. Although the first is better than the sequel.
a worthy sequel.......2007-01-09
Chaim Potok is my favorite author and My Name is Asher Lev is my favorite book. With that said, The Gift of Asher Lev was an excellent follow-up. Potok managed to say new things and address new issues that Lev encountered in a different stage of his life.
It's good. Read it.
Not art for art's sake.......2006-08-04
Asher Lev drew outcasts. The people were angered. He had grown up in a Brooklyn apartment. His father worked for the Rebbe. Now, a middle aged man with two children, he lives in the South of France. He and his wife and children travel to Brooklyn because his uncle has died. His uncle had supported his art. He did two crucifixions, paired, and the community was enraged. He arranged to attend a yeshiva in Paris where things would be calm. Asher read in a book that children threw stones at Cezanne when he was an old man.
The Hasidim refer to God as the Master of the Universe. The group is called the Ladover community. The last time Asher Lev stayed with his parents there had been death threats. His uncle's watch and jewelry stores supported the Ladover communities. Asher's mother teaches Russian history and political theory at NYU. In the matter of painting pictures Asher Lev disagrees with the Ladover community. In other respects he is a Ladover Hasid.
Asher's Uncle Yitzchok leaves a substantial art collection. He put money and energy into the collection. His uncle had said to Asher Lev that he would be another Picasso. Asher's parents want him to lengthen his stay with them. He feels he is being sucked into the sect's and his family's disapproval of his pursuits.
A friend believes the Ladover success as a fundamentalist movement on America's secular soil makes it newsworthy. It is both traditional and contemporary, but what about Asher Lev? How does Asher fit in to the scheme of things? Jacob Kahn, Asher Lev's teacher, told him that redemption is death to art.
The Rebbe requests that Asher Lev and his family remain longer in Crown Heights. Everyone but Asher is pleased to extend the visit. Asher wants to be back at Saint-Paul. In the Holocaust Asher's wife, Devorah, lost her entire family. Devorah spent two years in the dark in an apartment in Paris. She is enjoying becoming acquainted with Asher's family. Asher has been designated trustee of his uncle's art collection pursuant to the wishes of his uncle and notwithstanding the uncomfortable feelings of his cousins and the widow. Any profit realized from the collection is to be given to the Ladover community.
Asher returns to Paris, leaving the children and Devorah in Crown Heights. He has been working under a series of shocks, the deaths of his teacher and uncle, and the savaging by critics of his latest exhibition. In the end her realizes what the crucial dilemma is. Asher Lev agrees to give his family over, particularly his son, to community interests. It seems that his father, as the chief assistant to the Rebbe, is in a position to succeed the Rebbe, but only if he, in turn, has a suitable successor, Avrumel, the son of Asher Lev. The arrangement of living in France is to become a solitary existence permanently on the part of Asher Lev.
This is one of the most important books in my life........2006-02-23
I take my spiritual life seriously -- and so does Asher Lev. I am certainly not any kind of artistic genious, but Lev and I really fell into sinc.
In fact, I have read this story so many times that I have been through three paperback copies. And it has never disappointed me.
Potok took me so deeply into Lev's character that I was him. I felt his pain and his struggle. I understood his feeling of being torn apart by two worlds that should and could have fit together.
This book also provides the deepest insights into Hasidism that I, a lapsed Episcopalian, have ever read. I have a deep respect for that tradition because of Potok and Asher Lev.
Sacrifice is always a central storyline and in "The Gift of Asher Lev" not only is a sacrifice required but the sacrifice is wrapped in mystery and enigma.
Delightful read!
Don't Judge It By It's Cover.......2005-06-07
In my review of Chaim Potok's My Name is Asher Lev, I admitted that I was reluctant to read the sequel out of fear that it could not be as satisfying. My fear was unfounded. The Gift of Asher Lev is a wonderful novel and those who enjoyed My Name is Asher Lev will be happy to find Asher twenty years later with a wife and two children living, if not happily, at least contentedly in southern France. That is until page 6. Coming off a successful but poorly reviewed art show in Paris, Asher learns that his uncle has died and takes his family with him back to Brooklyn for the first time.
Unlike the first Asher Lev novel, where Asher was shunned by the leaders of his Hasidic Jewish community because of his controversial painting, the tension in The Gift of Asher Lev revolves around the Ladovers wanting him - or part of him - back. Asher's parents get to know his wife and children, and everyone except our hero is happy with this arrangement. Asher, however, has trouble exorcising his old demons: he fears another anonymous death threat, he can't find the inspiration to paint, and he just doesn't feel comfortable in Brooklyn anymore. Asher's father still does not understand him or his art, but anger and frustration have subsided to a sort of resigned sadness.
The Gift of Asher Lev introduces the importance of riddles in Hasidism, which seems as much a suspense-building technique by Potok as a true Jewish tradition. Frustratingly, Potok does not give answers to some of the riddles the characters evoke. But the biggest riddle of all - the heart of the story - is rather clear early on, making the book more readable rather than less suspenseful. Though he puts them off throughout most of the novel, Asher ultimately has some important choices to make. He makes them in the final ten pages of the book, keeping the reader engaged to the very last page.
Now, about that cover: it's awful. It looks like the cover to some sci-fi/romance fusion novel. It's got a picture of a blue-eyed man with his blow-dried hair, resembling Harrison Ford in Return of the Jedi but looking nothing like any of the characters in The Gift of Asher Lev (Asher is still a Hasidic Jew, after all). It's got smaller pictures of a pudgy young boy and an old, white-bearded man who I guess are Asher's son and father. Are they trying to turn readers off? If there's ever a time that the old adage fits, this may be it. If you can get past the cover, you are in for a rewarding read.

Painful Lessons Revisited.......2007-08-23
Angolos, a wealthy Greek billionare finds himself diagnosed with cancer. A cure is available, but the cost is most often sterility. Released from medical care, Angolos decides to take a short break at a small seaside town and meets a young woman named Georgie. Georgie is sweet and innocent and worships the ground Angolos walks on. After a short courtship, the two marry and in a few months, Georgie announces her pregnancy only to find herself thrown out of the house. A stunned Georgie, not knowing what she's done wrong, leaves and returns home to go back to college. Now after three and a half years, Georgie has earned her degree and managed to make a living for herself and her son....for years Angolos has deposited money into an account that Georgie refuses to touch. When a friend of Angolos' sees Georgie's son Nicky, he is stunned at the miniature version of Angolos. He tells Angolos that there is no doubt, he has a son and when he sees Nicky he knows he made a mistake all those years ago, now he wants to be a part of Nicky and Georgie's life, but will she be able to forgive him?
This was a passionate, sexy book. At times, Angolos can be thick headed, how many times must his jealosy be proved to be for nothing before he can trust Georgie. At times, I think Georgie is a little too forgiving, but still she is a strong character. Great book.
Very Enjoyable 4.5 Stars if given the option.......2007-05-25
I liked reading this book; as usual a failure to communicate with each other caused the hero and heroine to split. I understand the hero doubting the child's parentage but I think keeping his possible inability to have children from fiancé\wife was very deceitful and took away from his likeability.
It was great that the heroine was no longer a pushover and was able to speak her mind and not follow the hero as if she didn't have opinions of her own. I think the hero and heroine should have discussed the issues, she was having, with his mother and sister making him aware of the way she was treated by his family.
There were several twist and turns to keep the reader involved and I thought it was a very good book.
Pregnant by the Greek Tycoon.......2005-10-05
Back cover reads:
All the Greek tycoon wants is...
his child.
After a whirlwind marriage to Greek billionaire Angolos Constantine, Georgie was pregnant--and was sure Angolos would be delighted. Instead, he told her to "go away and never come back." So that was exactly what she did. Angolos has never seen his son--until now!
In fact, Angolos Constantine didn't think he could have children, and now he's not prepared to let his miracle go. Even though Georgie seems to hate him, he'll have what's rightfully his...by whatever means possible!
JEALOUSY - BETRAYAL - LOVE.......2005-07-21
For a man who has beaten cancer even at the risk of being sterilized, Angolos Constantine was ready to celebrate.
On his way to see Paul he stopped at a beach where he saw Georgie, a 21 year collete student, who brought his body to raging life.
Georgie had known him less than a month when they married. They couldn't keep their hands off each other.
What a shock when telling him the happyest news of having a baby caused him to tell her to get out and never come back.
Much in between, but 4 years later Paul gets a chance to see Nicky and tells Angolos that the child is in his spiting image.
Angolos was sure that Georgie had betrayed him with Alan, her friend.
Mama Constentine had constantly been telling Georgie that Sonia, the ex-wife, was the woman for Angolos.
Angolos problem was that he couldn't forgive but he couldn't let go of Georgie either. And he wanted his son. So he decided to move in with them. Georgie wasn't the same woman he had married, she had more backbone and stood up to Angolos for the sake of her son.
What a great Love story! Excellent twists and turns to move at a very good pace. Great to see a strong man in thrall to his wife.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED -- Should be a keeper! Enjoy!

Exceptional Wisdom.......2007-02-23
The Voyagers series presents exceptional, in-depth Spiritual Wisdom. The information conveyed by Voyagers includes knowledge that can only be acquired by studying many different scriptures, and even at that, these books contain more detailed Spiritual Science and ascension techniques than can be found elsewhere. I recommend going even further and getting the course offered by Azuritepress, "The Tangible Structure of the Soul".
Combining this Wisdom with Meditation, etc. is a powerful platform for conscious evolution.
The fear is in the eye of the beholder.......2006-12-10
Yes, the books talk about dark forces, fallen angelics, earth doomed, history and lots of technical stuff and much more! But how could that be disempowering? Just the very opposite, better to know what is REALLY going on on Earth and the Galaxy than just thinking that we walk in a bed of roses and that the shift of Consciousness generally presented by the New Age movement will save us just like that.
The teachings are overwhelming at the beginning, but if you resonate with it, you will soon see the beauty of knowing and learning what is presented.
To me this work was an eye opener and I actually feel less fearful and more empowered; this is preparing me to better receive whatever comes in the near future.
Rock your world view w Voyagers series.......2006-03-16
Ever felt like you didn't quite fit on planet earth with the mind numbing, never-ending routine of trivia that fills up our lives? Not to mention the obvious dirth of information about why we are here, where we came from and where we might be headed. If this even remotely describes feelings that you have struggled with most of your life then do yourself a favor and buy this book. It is intense, complex and sometimes difficult to read but if you stick with it you will be rewarded. This book will definitely help you decrease your level of ignorance about yourself and life on the planet - you can replace tired and worn out stories about human history with a good solid knowledge about what really happened. GK - Los Angeles
Let it speak for itself..........2004-12-07
I have looked high and low through countless new age books and Voyagers was the first book that really fofilled my sense of longing. After every other book I had read, I found myself still searching, but after Voyagers, I no longer needed to search. That is not to say that everything you ever needed to know can be found in this book, it is more of an introduction to a larger body of work where you can find information on everything you wanted to know, and then some. If you are genuinely looking for answers, then don't take my word for it, or any one else's for that matter... just read it for yourself and decide for yourself if it is right for you.
Details, Pictures, Openness.......2004-10-13
I love the details of this body of work.
Reading this book and the questions posed at the beginning helped me to evaluate where I am open to discovering more, or closed on some levels.
This was like a fun class--like I always hoped school would be, rather than the dulldrums school often was.
Written with consideration of all peoples, intellects and backgrounds, this flows like science/spirituality 101...
like "the dumbies guide to the universal and biological structure"...fascinating, informative and empowering.
I tend to feel that when we react to something with fear, we are fearful beings.
And when we respond to something openly, we are open and empowered. To me, Knowledge IS power. When I know, I can prepare and can face all things in mature courage and joy.
Overall, this book Is a Joy to read.
I found the techniques simple, even for a child to grasp/visualize and deeply powerful.

Ready for Tao.......2007-09-24
This is a really good starter book for daily reflections on Tao. The reflections are short, and easily understood, and even for people who are not that familiar with Tao, it's easy to understand the wisdom of the author.
Read, contemplate and apply to your own life.......2006-10-25
This is the first 'Tao' book I've ever read. I picked this up, not even really knowing what 'The Tao' is. As I flipped through and read the short passages on random pages, I was immediately drawn in to the peacefullness, simplicity and the interpretations of the words and symbols on the pages.
I found the introduction to be extremely well written. I even go back and re-read the introduction, just because I love what it says! For example, it begins with this:
"Following Tao means following a living path. It is a way of life that sustains you, guides you, and leads you to innumerable rich experiences. It is a spiritual path of joy and insight, freedom and profundity." -Wow, well that sounded like just what I was looking for!
The introduction goes on to explain some of the special qualities of those who follow Tao. Then, tells you about other good books to read about the Tao. The structure of the book is then broken down to explain what each part is for.
Now, here's an overview of the book:
There are 256 pages. Each page has a word at the top left hand corner of the page, and a chinese (calligraphy) symbol below the word. There is a paragraph beside the symbol that explains the symbol/picture/lines in brief detail. Below that, there are about 3-4 short paragraphs on each page that describe the meanings/relevance of the word/symbol in our lives.
My book is full of bookmarks and slips of paper of my favorite passages.
This is a partial excerpt that I particularly liked:
Moon: "It is important in life to be constant." "The moon has its own primal power. It pulls on the earth; it pulls on the oceans and on the hearts and minds of human beings; it paces the seasons. The moon does not fight. It attacks no one. It does not worry. It does not crush others. It keeps its course, but by its very nature, it gently influences. What other body could pull an entire ocean from shore to shore? The moon is faithful to its nature and its power is never diminished. Look no further than tonight's sky if you would want to know how you can be both true to Tao and to yourself."
This is a beautiful book! Looking for something to inspire you, nurture you in your spirituality, and teach you? Read this.
The Chinese characters or symbols called hanzi .......2005-09-06
I am a student of chi gung.I was surprised at how much detail he puts into this book.
I have lived in China for many years. I read and write hanzi or Mandrin ,the changes were instituted after --The cultural revolution and The great leap forward. The other writer may not be aware of the changes.
Hanzi was simplified for the peasants to learn.
Everyday Tao.......2005-09-04
It is excellent and both my friend and I are enjoying the readings.
Simple but valuable.......2005-08-27
I'm writing this review because I realized that I've had this book for years and it's never reached my bookshelf. It's always by my bedside, because I turn to it at least weekly as a source of meditation or comfort or thought. It's not a perfect book - some of the text is too vague to be inspiring - but it's simple, clear, and insightful. I think it's a great book to buy and keep as a companion on your journey.

Customer Reviews:
Can't help but like this one.......2004-05-15
I am generally not a Debbie Bliss fan--her books contain typos, I generally prefer stitch designs to color patterns and/or stockingnette stitch, and the patterns tend to be recycled through her books. However, there really are some irresitible sweaters here. Hopefully you will like working with color charts, since most of the sweaters focus on color, though there are 4 sweaters that rely on stitch patterns to create an interesting effect. While the book describes itself as having items for 0-3 year olds, the patterns are generally written for one size only, which I found really frustrating. It's pretty rare to find children's patterns in only one size, and it's very inconvenient since there is a great difference in size between a 6 month old baby and a one year old baby. Experienced knitters will be able to adapt, but I think it might disappoint a novice. As in all Debbie Bliss books, the yarns are listed by name rather than weight (and, yes, they are all Rowan yarns), so you may be left guessing what weight to use. Again, this might frustrate a novice. You will need to be able to read knitting charts to do the color patterns. Between 3 and 4 stars.
Adorable.......2002-01-27
I love everything in this book. Some outfits for the whimsical, others for the baby who goes for a more grown-up look. All are very cute and practical. I love that they all have matching accessories: blankets, hats, toys, shoes. I have gotten the knitting bug again after many years "off" and can't wait to get started on one of these. All I need now is a grandchild to wear them. I plan to order more of Debbie Bliss's designs.
beautiful but limited sizing.......2001-05-17
I love my Debbie Bliss books. But I was slightly disappointed in this one because the sweaters were generally sized for mostly only one (a few had two) size only (some of her later books size for various sizes ranging from 0-12 months, or 1 - 5 etc.). So, if I liked a design, but the baby I was knitting for was not the exact size the pattern was fitted for, I was out of luck. There was no variation and I am not experienced enough of a knitter to adjust the pattern This was very frustrating, because some of the sweaters are quite cute.
Another book filled with beautiful sweaters.......2000-12-26
I own 4 of her books and have knitted sweaters from each one. These are books that compel you to knit as the sweaters are beautiful. There are many original, clever patterns to suit every knitter and child. The last 6 sweaters I've knitted have been Debbie Bliss creations and all were well received. I have one problem with her books. There are typos that will frustrate the novice knitter. As another reviewer mentioned, read her patterns carefully and check the photos. The photography is very good with the emphasis on the sweater, not the model. The errors generally occur on the wrong side row instructions. The first row sets the pattern with a knit-purl combination while the second row instructions just have "purl" when clearly you have to follow the combination set in the first row. If the second row instructions seem to simple for the pattern, they generally are. I have found this same typo in 3 books. The books are beautifully done. The patterns are varied and creative. She needs a editor who knows how to knit.
Fun knits for kids.......1999-12-02
Debbie Bliss has brought together a fantastic collection of her distinctive kids knits. They're fun, bright, and very easy to knit, and no matter how picky the child (or their parents) are, you will certainly find something here that they'll love. Her instructions are clear and easy to follow. My only complaint is that I don't have enough time to knit them all!

3-D Home Kit (by Daniel K. Reif, author/inventor)
The hardest part of planning a new home, addition or remodeling project is visualizing how the final results will actually look and work. The 3-D Home Kit includes complete poster-board building materialsfrom brick, stone, siding, roofing and decking to windows, doors, skylights, kitchen cabinets and appliancesto construct a detailed, 1/4-inch scale, three-dimensional model of your own building project. There are also poster-board materials for interior walls, stairs, scale people, a dog and a cat, plus an 18 by 24 inch floor plan grid, and Scale Ruler & Roof Slope Calculator. Each sheet is 12 by 18 inches and has an illustration of a building material on one side and a 1/4-inch grid on the other side; the grid makes it easier to construct your model and the illustrations give the model realistic detail. Step-by-step instructions and a design worksheet are provided. Whether you're planning a real or dream home, the 3-D Home Kit will help you improve your design and experience first-hand how an architect works.
Duke University's "Gifted Letter" awarded the 3-D Home Kit (along with the Home Quick Planner, also by Daniel Reif) top honors. The editor wrote, "The planner and kit provide everything needed to design and build a model home
furniture, windows, stairways, and appliances, right down to the ironing board
and bring the user through the architectural process from idea to finished product."
Customer Reviews:
An Excellent Teaching Tool.......2005-08-12
This kit does a difficult task admirably – it offers novice designers a clear and understandable path through the complex processes of house design and paper model-building. As a K-12 design educator who uses 3-d Home Kits with my middle school (math and engineering) students, I can tell the creator of this kit has refined the process by teaching with the kit many times himself.
The wealth of information (text plus illustrations) in the “Hands-on Design + Math” section teaches a good introduction to the design process for students and homeowners alike: program (determining your needs); site considerations; interior spaces; how to work in scale; and roof design. The “Model Construction section, a concise step-by-step guide, wisely includes a sample room addition with which to practice.
Homeowners creating their own home design or remodel should be taking their time with process; I would suggest absorbing what this kit can teach, then doing drafts and rough study models using other paper and oak tag, then using the kit’s materials to create an attractive and useful final model.
new house project.......2005-06-22
I purchased this kit in the first stages of planning my new home. I found it very helpful in planning the layout of the rooms, the roof design, and the locations of windows. The model helped me communicate with my architect and builder.
Don't buy this.......2005-01-05
I thought this kit would allow you to create the kind of house that is pictured on the cover. It appears that the kit will allow you to build walls and design rooms. In reality, the box only includes a series of pieces of paper with pictures of furniture and building materials printed on them. There is no support structure whatsoever for the building. The design items are not self sticking or even easily accessible. They are tiny pictures printed on large pieces of regular paper. Hours of cutting would be required for the simplest of home designs. "Fun and easy to use" is quite inaccurate. Also, $22 for a stack of paper is ridiculous.
A gift for my mother.......2002-03-09
She seemed to really like it. I saw what she did with it and it seems to work in showing where everything goes in creating your own house that some day you may want to have all your own.

Buy it !.......2000-07-04
If you looking for a good design book, I think you find it. I'm a Portuguese graphic designer, and this book reduced 50% of my work because it shows thousands of beautiful ideas so you can use in many kinds of works (flyers, bags, packaging, tags, books...). I don't have many books, but I already sow some, and this is the best I already saw. Don't waste time (because you will not waste money to), buy it!

Disappointing costly book.......2001-08-23
The famous publishers of Graphis magazine have collected here a series of books that are of good design, but anyone who visits a trendy book store will see all those covered in, and a lot more interesting ones. The cost of the book and the fame of the publisher made me expect a great selection. Inside you'll only find -- almost -- american designs.

Book Description
Born in West Ham in 1947, David Essex recalls his childhood living in a hostel for the homeless and his passion for football that led him to play for West Ham United. At the age of 23, David was simultaneously the star of a West End hit musical Godspell, had a number one hit record with Rock On, and was starring in the massive hit film That'll Be the Day. David recounts the "Essex Mania" of the time, and talks candidly about creating the role of Che in Evita, and missing out on Broadway and the film. Then there are the stories of times with Keith Moon, John Lennon, and Richard Burton. This is an honest, funny and insightful account of his amazing life.
