Readers of alternative weeklies will be familiar with Lynda Barry's work from her long-running comic strip, Ernie Pook's Comeek. Similarly, The Good Times Are Killing Me focuses on the surprisingly complex emotional world of children. It is the story of a neighborhood going through the throes of integration and white flight as seen through the eyes of young Edna Arkins. Edna forms an unlikely friendship with Bonna Willis, a girl with a talent for "ass beating." Edna is white and Bonna is black, and from the start there are pressures from both sides against their friendship. As always, Barry is an impeccable observer of the way kids think and talk--several passages are certain to bring memories of intense schoolyard negotiations rushing back. Barry's artwork comes into play as well--each chapter is punctuated with slightly more painterly versions of her characteristically raw drawing style. By turns funny and moving, The Good Times Are Killing Me is an immensely satisfying read. --Ali Davis

Book Description

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great book where music is a prime force.......2006-03-22

I teach a course on teaching music for children (at the college level). I use this book to get students thinking about the deep ways that music impacts our lives. Situations from family to school music, private to public, and informal to formal are all present, and Barry's wonderful attention to detail brings each to life in a way that make my students talkative.

Of course, I wouldn't use it if it weren't a wonderful novel as well. It is. The story that is told is gripping, and my students love reading it.

5 out of 5 stars another amazing feat...........2005-07-14

Barry just knows how to get into the psyche of kids, adolescents, anyone under the age of 17, it seems. This book is a quick read, but a delicious one. Barry writes her characters' voices in as understated and realistic pieces of life, and she does what she's so good at doing: she puts readers in a space in which they're none too comfortable, and yet they can't seem to shake the familiar feelings of their own childhood horrors and experiences. This book is unsettling and slightly worrisome, and also truthful and wonderful, just as children often are.

5 out of 5 stars A must-read........2002-09-20

This is the book that got me started on my Lynda Barry addiction. I stumbled on to this book by fortuitous accident. It's brilliant. It is simple in its style with a reach deep into the heart of complex feelings and issues. While not as riveting as Cruddy, it is more moving and realistic. I hope Lynda Barry continues to produce work of this quality. One Hundred Demons is also extremely good. Her fiction is great literature on a transcendent level.

3 out of 5 stars Not Ernie Pook's Comeek.......2002-02-07

I didn't realize that this was actually a short book of vignettes as opposed to an illustrated story or comic. I had just finished The!Greatest!Of!Marlys! and have been a fan of Lynda Barry's comics for quite some time. This is more like her book Cruddy than her comics. I just could not get quite as into this book as I might have had I known what I was in for when I bought it. It will be enjoyable for anyone who loved Cruddy but if you are looking for something like Marlys et. al. than this may not be what you are looking for.

5 out of 5 stars So brilliant and so funny...extraordinary.......1999-08-19

Lynda Barry captures the joys, fears, chills and spills of growing up in this effortlessly charming collection of memories and stories, accompanied by her paintings and art work of singers and musicians. It's a very special book and one that I return to time and time again.

Matt had never met a woman who hadn't succumbed to the McCafferty charm. But beautiful Kelly Dillinger, the cop assigned to his sister's hit-and-run case, proved indifferent to his attractions. Although they didn't get along, her all-business attitude pricked his ego . . . and fired up his blood. The more she resisted, the more determined he became to break down her defenses. The alluring female detective somehow managed to beach the layers of his tough-as-rawhide exterior to touch his soul.

Matt might think that law enforcement is no place for a lady, but he might soon find himself making a plea for passion!

            1 out of 5 stars non-story.......2006-06-28

This book is a disappointment to say the least. While it does give the reader a very predictable romance, it never resolves the "mystery" that is supposed to be part of the plot. As the lovers decide to marry - "against all odds" that they would be attracted to one another - they end the book committed to trying to find out "who did it." It's a non-plot...sorry I spent money on it.

            4 out of 5 stars Nicely Handled!.......2006-05-22

Usually in romantic suspense one element of the story -- either the romance or the suspense -- generally suffers. Not so in THE MCCAFFERTYS: MATT, here author Lisa Jackson combines the two elements beautifully. More important, Ms. Jackson had me from the get-go!

The McCaffertys of Grand Hope, Montana were having a string of bad luck and Matt McCafferty wanted answers! Who was terrorizing his family by trying to kill Randi, his half-sister? The gossips were having a field day. Around town, the whispered rumors had the McCafferty brothers listed as prime suspects. The wealthy McCaffertys were roguishly handsome, sexy, and arrogant and they certainly had motive. If the high-and-mighty brothers got rid of their little half-sister, well their inheritance would grow substantially!

During the investigation of his sister's hit-and-run accident, Matt McCafferty had to notice Ms. Kelly Dillinger. Detective Dillinger was a no-nonsense spitfire with a "don't mess with me" attitude. She was intriguing, delightful, and sassy and Matt McCafferty was falling hard for this redheaded detective. Suddenly, Matt's carefree "love 'em and leave 'em" days were threatened. He knew someday he would marry; he just hadn't planned on a career-minded cop!

Most of the time, Kelly Dillinger held a tight rein on her emotions. Now suddenly she was feeling restless and alone. Her police work had always been enough, but now she wanted more. Could the roguish Matt McCafferty be the more? Kelly Dillinger didn't trust easily and she refused to be bullied or intimidated by any man. So what was it about Matt McCafferty? Was he the man she'd been waiting for all of her life? If she gave in to the calling, from her seldom-used feminine parts, would she suffer?

THE MCCAFFERTYS: MATT is a nicely handled romantic suspense. Matt McCafferty is the classic sexy, alpha-male cowboy; yet, Kelly Dillinger is not the standard romance heroine. By using a remarkably controlled pen, Lisa Jackson gives her heroine solid feminineness and yet, supplies her with sturdy toughness. And certainly, Ms. Jackson did not throw in Kelly's job as a window dressing.

Of course, THE MCCAFFERTYS: MATT is part of a family saga and the characters from each book, previous or sequel, drift effortlessly in and out. This drifting is a pleasant continual touch. However, the prologue, with old John Randall McCafferty in action, has little bearing on this story. My question - why have it? Moreover, the idea of feuding families with Kelly and Matt as the star-crossed lovers proved disappointing.

            And finally, finally . . .
The mystery that surrounds the McCafferty brothers' half-sister, Randi. That mystery IS the element that ties the entire series together. Therefore, in THE MCCAFFERTYS MATT, there is no resolution. To learn the answer, the reader is forced to continue with the sequels; certainly, not an enormous trial, if THE MCCAFFERTYS: MATT is any indication.

Matt had never met a woman who didn't succumb to the McCafferty charm. But beautiful Kelly Dillinger proved indifferent to his attractions. Although they didn't get along, her all-business attitude pricked his ego...and fired his blood. The more she resisted, the more determined he became to break down her defenses. For the lucious lady detective touched his soul, and there was no way he was going to let her get away without claiming her as his own blushing, breathless bride...

In the first book of this miniseries, THE MCCAFFERTYS: THORNE, the eldest McCafferty fall in love with a doctor, breaking the brother's mutual commitment to bachelorhood. In the second book of this miniseries, middle brother Matt watches with amazement has his elder brother enjoys his wife and her twins. Perhaps it is time for Matt to rethink his single status.

As sister Randi lies in a comma at the hospital, questions surround her accident. Her brothers believe that she was run off the road while steering around an icy bend in the road, and the accident induced labor. Now her brothers care for her small son, nicknamed J.R., until she recovers. Thorne also encountered a risk to his safety when his plane had engine trouble during a storm, and that easily could have taken his life. Without evidence, however, Detective Kelly Dillinger can only continue to investigate. Then someone injects a dangerous drug into Randi's IV, and it becomes obvious that someone wants to eliminate the McCafferty siblings.

Even Kelly's family has an ax to grind against the McCafferty, as does, it seems, the whole town. Millionaires can have that effect on people. Indeed, the town believes that one or all of the brothers intend harm to Randi. Since no one knows who is the father of her baby, even Randi falls victim to the rumor mill. As Kelly continues her investigation, she finds herself increasingly thrown into the company of Matt McCafferty, which makes her none to happy. As far as she's concerned, he's bad news. But the more Kelly resists Matt's attentions, the more determined he becomes to break through her defenses.

The underlying tension from the threats to the McCaffertys makes for a real page turner. Indeed, the tension neatly mirrors the tension between hero and heroine as Matt begins his pursuit of his intended bride. With these richly realized characters and careful plotting, Lisa Jackson pens yet another winner in this fascinating miniseries. Readers will look forward to the next installment in the miniseries, due out in December 2001, THE MCCAFFERTYS: SLADE. Highly recommended.

I must admit to having a special interest in this book. As a young man I spent two summer holidays as an assistant instructor and general help at the sailing school in Gibraltar, and I found both the school and particularly Tony Harris to be inspirational during those formative years. The stories in the book have brought many happy memories rolling back. It is something of a tragedy that the school is no more, but I cannot hesitate to recommend the book to anyone, even if only vaguely, interested in the sea.

4 out of 5 stars Humanity at Its Best and Worst.......2007-09-30

To put my review in context, I have climbed Half Dome several times, and was a former member of National Ski Patrol, trained and experienced in search and rescue. I have a friend who was killed by lightning in Arizona and was almost struck myself in my back yard, 20 minutes after a storm had ended and the sky had turned clear blue. I am a confirmed hiker and back packer and have back packed in Yosemite and the High Sierra many times. I found this book deeply troubling and at the same time very rewarding. This recounts the story of what happened when foolhardy young people ignored the warnings of the lethal reality of lightning as they approach Half Dome so that they can "dance in the lightning" to prove their manhood. Two are killed and others are severely injured by being struck multiple times by lightning. I was horrified by their wanton disregard not only for their personal safety but also for their disgusting disregard for others. Their actions were offensive in the extreme. Contrast this with the actions of the rescuers! Despite being offended by the vulgar and crude actions of those who were struck by lightning on Half Dome, they recognized the value of human life, no matter how offensive the victims were, and exercise heroic efforts, at immense self sacrifice, to save their lives. I take my hat off to all involved in the rescue but particularly to Linda Crozier for her efforts to save the injured. She stands out as a stunning example of not only the best humanity has to offer but also did a superb job triaging and treating the injured under the most trying circumstances. Linda, God bless you! Thanks also to the pilots of the helicopter who risked landing on top of Half Dome several times as darkness fell to evacuate the injured! What heroes! Anyone reading this book will have a much better understanding of the dangers of lightning and of the inherent risks and difficulties involved in moutain rescues! This book has a lot to teach and will affect almost every reader for the rest of their lives!

5 out of 5 stars great true story.......2007-09-22

I enjoyed this book because I have been to Yosemite although I did not climb Half Dome. It was interesting because the reader got to see what led up to the tragedy and how this should never have happened. It was also great to hear everyone's side of the story including the EM T's and others that helped save 2 lives.

                  5 out of 5 stars Incredible!.......2007-06-06

This is a great change of pace book. The author does great research on the underachieving lives of some of the hikers in their early 20s who enjoy dope, beer and hiking to the top of Half Dome. These young men have yet to recognize their vulnerability but on this day in Yosemite Valley they not only would recognize their vulnerability, they would alter their lives forever by trying to beat a thunderstorm to the top of Half Dome. It's a 3 Act Play: set-up of the players, the incredible day and night on the mountain, and the aftermath. While the "action day" is incredibly engrossing, vs. other books this author has done a great job of making the set-up and aftermath very enjoyable. I highly recommend this book. For a similar read, try "The Last Season" by Eric Blehm.

5 out of 5 stars Nature can erase arrogance in an instant.......2007-06-01

This is a well-written and compelling account of the kind of tragedy that can result when recklessness and arrogance are confronted with one of nature's most powerful and unpredictable forces: lightning.

It all happened July 27, 1985. That's when a group of free-spirited, risk-taking, party-animal hikers decided to climb Half Dome while lightning flashed and thunder rolled through Yosemite National Park in California. A few hours later, two of the hikers were dead and the lives of the rest had been changed forever.

Bob Madgic, the author of the book, does an excellent job of capturing the personalities, the quirks, the backgounds, and the fool-hardiness of the participants. In addition to the horrifying events that happened to the hikers, Madgic also weaves into the narrative numerous fascinating and frightening facts about the phenomenon of lightning. He also highlights other related topics such as mountain climbing techniques and equipment, the history of Yosemite and Half Dome, the development of hospital emergency rooms and trauma centers, EMT training, helicopter rescue, and the period of American history that we now call the 80s.

For any reader who respects the realities of the natural world, or enjoys peering into the heads of risk takers, or just loves reading about the rip-roaring, danger-filled adventures of Man versus Nature, Shattered Air is a sure-fire winner.

                  3 out of 5 stars OK Read.......2007-05-15

This was an ok book. A quicker read than I expected. Good retelling of the story of what happened on Half-Dome and background information on the key people. One of the problems of retelling a story such as this is that there are so many moving parts and story lines involved. The author did a good job of keeping it all focused.

It can be summarized by stay away from Half-Dome if there are dark clouds or you hear thunder.

                  Book Description

Christmas and cookies are inseparable. The mere mention of baking cookies conjures up memories not just of tantalizing aromas and great tastes but of warm kitchens and good times with family and friends. Joy of Cooking Christmas Cookies brings together in a single volume 75 indispensable cookie recipes and more than 25 recipes for holiday extras. That's more than 100 recipes, half of which are brand new. This book also offers a sneak preview of the revision of Joy of Cooking, the first in more than two decades.

Written with clarity, humor, and a dedication to detail that has always set the Joy of Cooking apart from all other cookbooks, this book will teach anyone from the person who has never baked a single cookie to the experienced home baker how to turn out a perfect cookie every time. A treasure trove of information, this book contains basic instructions on measuring ingredients, handling and shaping cookie doughs, and decorating cookies, supported by helpful line drawings every step of the way. Recipes include the full range of cookies from the simplest one-pan bar cookies like Chocolate-Glazed Toffee Bars and Scottish Shortbread to those that are dropped onto a cookie sheet (don't miss the new Monster Cookies) to Christmas production numbers like Spritz that are piped through a press. On the familiar side are recipes for chocolate chip cookies, brownies, and sugar cookies. Brief but precise directions ensure that the brownies will be fudgey and moist, the chocolate chips chewy, and the sugar cookies meltingly tender. On the novel side are such irresistible new entries as Pumpkin Cheesecake Bars, Tuscan Almond Biscotti, and Chocolate Mint Surprises.

                  Among this Book's unique features:

For sparkling additions to any weekday or for a splendid display of special party presentations, the new Joy of Cooking Christmas Cookies is the only cookie book you'll ever need.

5 out of 5 stars The only book you will need.......2001-05-29

I have used this book time and time again, and not only for Christmas. The recipes are accurate, easy and great. The color photos really show how the recipes should look and they will! I have made more that a dozen different types of cookies from this book and each one was good if not great. The only problem I have with this book is that the ingredients are written into the directions. This makes it a little more time consuming when you are trying to get your recipes ready before the actual assemble and baking process. A minor set back for a really great book.

5 out of 5 stars Holiday cookies that look great and taste good!.......2001-01-27

I've used this cookie book when making holiday cookies for family and friends for the last several years, and the results have always been a huge hit. Too often Christmas cookies look great but taste terrible - not something to worry about with this book. I particularly recommend the Cranberry-Cherry Pinwheels. They are delicious and surprisingly easy to prepare. However, be forwarned that most of the recipes in this book are also found in the new Joy of Cooking. Joy is great and much more comprehensive. I'd recommend taking a look at it before buying this book.

This is a great and comprehensive guide to some of the eateries in Shangahi.

                        Plus, it's nicely designed!

                        Book Description

Logos are among designers' most highly sought-after projects, but they are often one of the most difficult projects for a designer to nail. This book takes a look at those challenges -- the logos that have truly pushed a designer's creativity and forced him or her to reach inside.

The authors examine 180 logos, making it easy for designers to take away insightful tips they can put to work immediately. The author tracks the life cycle of each logo from its challenge through the process to the final result. Scattered throughout the book are sidebars featuring 15 logos that were made over. The author talks about why the makeover was needed and, with the before and after logos side by side, discusses if the re-do was successful.

Color images throughout that show the logos from conceptual stages to final art make this book an at-a-glance reference for anyone -- designer or entrepreneur -- who wants to take an active role in the creation of his or her brand mark.

With plenty of detail for Sting fans of all ages, Sting: Demolition Man traces the rise of young Brit Gordon Sumner to the international pop icon known as Sting. Focusing continually on the man's personal and professional growth, this is no sleazy-tabloid type of biography; instead, his variety of talents, beliefs, and musical styles are shown against the backdrop of his personal life. The transformation from irritable and angry young punk living in a basement to multimillionaire father and activist makes for interesting material when coupled with his dramatic changes in musical style. Equal focus is given to all stages of his adult development--the chart-topping band the Police are presented as just another side trip, albeit an important one, in Sting's career. While there's a lot of minute detail, the presentation is uniformly impersonal: after reading this book, you'll know everything about the man from his favorite hobbies to when he had his nose done, but somehow there's little sense of true motives or guiding inspiration. Old Police fans who've wondered what happened to the bleached-blond, sneering singer since his "growing up" will be relieved to learn there's a bit less self-importance behind his image than we've been led to believe. Author Christopher Sandford includes opinions about individual songs and movie scenes throughout the book (feel free to disagree), and fans wanting complete lists of Sting's accomplishments will find the timeline at the end of the book most helpful. --Jill Lightner

1 out of 5 stars VERY poorly written! There's a reason it costs less than a dollar used..........2006-11-20

I could barely finish the introduction without putting it down completely. There was no way I would read such verbose writing - the writer is in love with his own text, making the book almost unreadable. I decided to skim through the book reading a few bits here and there, but I don't think I'll get far (I just started it and felt so strongly I had to write this immediately).

1 out of 5 stars Complete waste time and money.......2004-02-07

I have not purchased this worthless piece of trash, but I have read it. First of all, it is unauthorized, which usually mean that certain sources will not be available to the auther, such as the person they are writing about! Secondly, the writing is dismal, and rather like listening to fingernails on a chalkboard. I gave it one star because there was no lower rating.

If you are a Sting fan, or curious, I would highly recommend "Broken Music," Sting's autobiography. It is beautifully written, and painfully honest.

                        2 out of 5 stars Worth a read - but not a second.......2003-11-22

After reading this book, I feel that I have gained additional insight into Sting's life and, in that respect, don't consider the effort spent with this book a waste of my time. However, I feel that any additional time invested in reading it a second time WOULD be a waste.

Mr Sandford spends too much time editorializing on his thoughts and beliefs about the man and not enough telling the story. He has his own perceptions of Sting and, instead of those perceptions merely coloring his prose, they completely overshadow the story being told.

One factual error - Mr Sandford states that Sting was the culprit behind Henri Padovani's departure from The Police once Andy Summers had been tapped for guitarist duties. Message In A Box (even Sandford states that Sting had no part of this box set release) contains an essay written by Mr. Summers himself where he specifically states that HE, Andy, was the one that laid down the ultimatum that he was the guitarist-of-record for the Police and that Henri had to go. The Police played ONE gig as a quartet and Andy told Sting and Stewart that there would not be a second with Henri. Sting and his 'overwhelming self-important ego' were NOT the reason Henri left The Police.

That error alone makes me discount many other statements made by Mr. Sandford. Demolition Man is worth one (and ONLY one) read, but remember to bring a grain of salt with you when you do because, in this case, you definitely can't believe everything you read.

2 out of 5 stars Destined for 'la poubelle'.........2003-02-18

To give all those interested in Sting, a flavour of this book, and just how incredibly irritating it truly is to any self-confessed fan such as myself, I will attempt to entertain you with a mimic of the author's style of writing in this scathing review- only this time the spotlight being turned on Mr.Sandford - the self-styled 'le critique par excellence'.

"Its obvious from the very beginning, to the educated, of the 'rationale' this author proclaims to have on music, and quite obviously, it is nothing less than a mixture of his misplaced determination and ambition and our bad luck that Mr.Sandford ever thought to write a biography on Sting.

I do indeed compliment the author on his ability to critise and praise Sting on his life, however contrite and unjustified it often is. And its with sincere regret that after much careful 'investigation' - talking to 100 or so people (no less) about Sting* (*his music)- The 'facts' are as follows:

Having read some first-hand 'evidence' of Stings childhood , ie. "A Sting In The Tale" by James Berryman (a better book- highly recommended) "Chris" (Mr. Sandford) falls short of delivering any unbiased information, however well informed by the Tabliod sheets (see back pages for actual references) and therefore, in no uncertain terms, makes himself 'look' (and I say look as I'd never intend to bias my reader) like a self-congratulating hypocrite. Indeed if I read about it in a Tabloid- i'm sure it would be true.

Chris, my dear friend, you were once a journalist now you are little more than a 'pretentious git' in my eyes... at least Sting has the sense of humour to appreciate that some people will always see him that way for whatever reasons.

                        You however - don't."

                        ah, thank you kindly
well if you're still interested - just don't believe all the stuff he sprouts!

5 out of 5 stars The more you know the more you don't care.......2002-04-09

Mr. Sandford gives an insightful look into Mr. Sting. Unfortunately, the more you read, the more you discover that Mr. Sting is one of the most self indulgent, arrogant, childish people you would ever not want to know. A waste of a good write.
