A complete surprise.......2007-06-13
I wasn't sure what to expect after I ordered this book, but I was completely surprised. It's a long "short" story but packs a lot into its pages. The story is told from Benny's perspective and follows his love of Terra, the trashiest girl in town. From childhood to adulthood, Benny loves her, even when she's cruel. Ellis develops the story nicely and the book has a nice Southern tone to it. He also works in the idea of love as redemption.
Now, about the ending, I gasped out loud and almost threw the book down--but then I read the last few pages and was completely satisfied. Excellent book.
Truly Wonderful!!.......2006-10-07
This was an exciting story-- one that got my heart to pounding and my face to smiling. The hardship of the white ghetto is tough enough to live with-- to fall in love in that environment is just plain difficult. This was an emotional ride with a wonderful unexpected ending. Terra is the meanest girl I've ever encountered in literature. But even a mean girl can fall-- under the right circumstance. I'm looking forward to reading his next book.
A Wild and Fun Ride!.......2006-04-10
Rhett Ellis knows how to pen a wild yet fun ride. I had a hard time putting this down for even a few seconds. I couldn't get enough of Terra Peoples and Benny Carpenter, and this would make such an excellent movie.
If you've ever driven by one of those rundown trailer parks and wondered about what kind of stories are in the making, then you are going to love this book. What do they want out of life? Do they hurt just like you and me? And is their pride any different than anyone's pride?
It is a love story, a sad story, and a story with a shocking twist that leaves ya with your mouth ajar.
If you love reading stories that have been penned by a natural writer, you will love this book.
See ya next review.
I wonder............2006-03-21
Some great novels are concerned with the heights to which the human spirit can soar. Some great novels plumb the depths of our awfulness. Something in a well-written story takes us on a journey inside ourselves and leaves us wondering... Would I do that? Could I? Why...? What if...? This story provokes those sorts of musings.
What happens in the life of a little girl to break her soul? When the world turns its back on her, why does one man turn toward her? Can the Devil be redeemed? Just what can perfect Love accomplish? Why would anyone WANT to love unconditionally, or to be loved that way?
Well, when I run the world, I'll change a few things about this novel, no doubt. The primary thing I'll have Mr. Ellis change, though, will be the length of the story. It leaves too many unanswered questions for my taste, and doesn't develop the main characters as fully as I'd prefer. (I suppose there are worse things for a writer to do than to leave readers wanting more...) On the other hand, the setting is interesting and unusual for a novel, and the characters are solidly consistent throughout the story in their wildly different approaches to life. And, perhaps most importantly and pleasantly of all, the story makes me wonder...
I look forward to Mr. Ellis' future works.

good story.......2006-06-16
this is a good story.it begins by telling how Merin Pendragon came to be, by a young lady named lynior whom arthur got pregnant. she is hidden away, and she and arthur never see each other again. It does'nt go into specifics how far ahead that lynior came from so i'm guessing that she is probably a great great great grandmother to merin and his children. Averil, is the eldest, although she is illegitemate, she is very beautiful, and she wishes to marry a powerful lord, but she gets kidnapped, by rhys fitzhugh a young poor bailiif trying to better his situation. Averil and rhys end up falling in love by the end.
Maia is merin's legitemate daughter who falls in love with a man who remains faceless in her dreams. Even after they are married, maia and emrys (maia's husband) have a hard time being together, because emrys's mother is the jealous and immortal lady of the lake. Maia goes through some tests to prove to the lady of the lake that she is worthy off her son.Junia I have not read about yet, but this is an engrossing read from start to finish
Left Wanting More.......2005-09-07
I really did enjoy the book, and I liked how it was split into sections for each daughter. The rape scene didnt bother me as much as it bothered other readers, mainly because it is so factual. I rather enjoyed the book. The only thing that I didnt like about the book was that the girls' stories seemed to be cut so short. By the time she got to Junia, it seemed the shortest. I was really wanting to know more about how Averil faired out. I guess I just didnt feel like the closing of each girls story was enough. I think it is a book worth reading though.
Not bad for a romance novel........2004-11-09
When I purchased this book, I had no idea who Beatrice Small was, or what type of book she normally writes. I grabbed it because of the story summary on the cover. The book tells the tale of 3 young women who all descend directly from the bloodline of King Arthur. The girls Averil, Maia, and Junia each have different mothers and the same father. Each is described as unique in appearance and as each of them prepare to marry they face their own unique circumstances. Averil is kidnapped by a young man looking to find a wife with a land dowery; Maia (and here the King Arthur bit came more into play) falls in love with a faceless man in her dreams - refusing all others and chosing to wait for the day he rides through the gates; and Junia who falls in love with a man from a family feuding with the Pendragons for over a century. Each story line is interesting and the book reads fast and keeps your attention. However, despite the lean toward historical fiction - and in the case of Maia, the definate sci-fi tilt to the story, this is definately a romance novel. I must admit that I found the ending a bit sugar coated and some of the love scenes and wording to be more "lonely housewife" than I would have preferred. There is one rape scene that I could have lived without and I was not thrilled that the woman in question continued to "love" the rapist - I think there is no place for any such suggestion in any type of literature, but that's a personal belief - you decide for yourself. If you want a tale about King Arthur - this is NOT it. If you want a decent, enjoyable read - it's not a bad choice. Knowing now that Ms. Small writes romance novels (despite any efforts at an historical twist) I would assume this is the only book of her's I shall read...but it wasn't a bad choice, just a bit predictable perhaps.
The Dragon Lord's Daughters.......2004-08-17
Another fabulous read from Beatrice Small. Three daughters, descended from the mystical King Arthur are of a marrigable age. Their father allows them to choose their own husbands (for the most part) for love as well as politcal. The adventures they must go through in order to be married will keep you hooked from daughter to daughter.
One of the Worst.......2004-08-07
I love all kinds of books, and I have been reading romance novels for about 15 years now, and I can honestly say this was one of the worst I have ever read. The writing is so bad, I had to post something. She actually writes at one point that he looks at her "unquestioningly," and then he asks her a question. What is that? And I found a few mistakes in the book which should have been caught in the editing process. Don't waste your time or your money on this book. There are so many other great romance writers out there!

What Happened to the Story?.......2007-07-03
Early John Norman novels were clever. The characters were contrived and the sex highly improbable but the stories often had clever narrative structure and wonderful pace. Witness of Gor has none of this. It's long and most of the first three quarters is given over to the sexual politics for which John Norman is famous. The repetition is dismal and would be comical if it weren't for the constant claim to be taken seriously. It's strange to have these novels turning up in lists of sado masochistic writing; they are more slerotic than erotic - except, I guess, for the John Norman tragics who can't get enough of the one thin message repeated again and again.
And then, suddenly, the novel comes to life and it is genuinely riveting. The action is powerful enough to save the dismal sex and while it lacks the lapidary finish of many of the earlier novels, it is still worth the read.
gor 26.......2007-05-12
Starts out slow and then drags it out, however the the plot all comes together in the end
A slave girl's view of Gor .......2007-01-19
Witness of Gor was another of the slave girl novels. It focuses on a captured Earth woman who is captured and enslaved on Gor. After her initial slave training she is sold to Treve as a prison slave. She is selected because of her almost complete ignorance of Gor, its geography and politics. Her job is to feed and care for a prisoner who was once the Ubar of Ar, and her ignorance prevents her from telling him anything of his current location or the political situation. What she doesn't know, she can't tell. Personally, I get tired of the mindless and seemingly endless repetitious, "I'm glad I'm a slave," conversations. About three fourths of the way through the book something happens. There is an attempt to free Marlenus. Some assassins are sent from Cos to eliminate the prisoner, but they underestimate his skill and cunning. Finally our slave girl is sold to Ar and then finds out that as a witness to the identity of the prisoner she has been marked for death. Tarl Cabot is mentioned only once in the book, in passing in a conversation about who might be the best swordsman on Gor, perhaps equal to the prisoner. We learn nothing more of space aliens or Priest Kings. Our view is that of an Earth girl made slave, one who might be the least politically knowledgeable woman on Gor. If you particularly enjoy the slave girls in Norman's novels you may like this one. Its not an action thriller.
Witness of Gor.......2007-01-09
This book completes my collection of the Gor series. I have not read it as
yet but I am on issue 19 so it won't be long. The book arrived in good time and order. Looks new and I can't wait to read it.
Thanks
Phil
Witness of Gor.......2006-11-05
This last book in the Gor series follows the usual formula of daring deeds performed on the Counter-Earth world of Gor. Told from the perspective of a unsuspecting slavegirl, it explores yet another arena in the John Norman world of Masters and their helplessly beautiful captives against a backdrop of politics and heroism.
The book arrived in new condition , excellently packaged, in extremely quick time.
A must have for those interested in the Gor series by John Norman, or for those interested in science fantasy style novels.

Useful information.......2000-11-13
This book is perfect for those members of the church body who want to help but aren't sure where to begin. It's also perfect for pastors who want to teach on spiritual gifting, and also encourage church members to exercise their spiritual gifts with benefit to the church.
Wagner's writing is succinct, humorous, and clear. This book sheds light not only on different spiritual gifts, but theories surrounding them (the book draws from several lists in the Bible, none of which completely mention every spiritual gift), common misconceptions, as well as a test in the back of the book to help each person begin to get a sense of what his or her spiritual gifts might be.
The book is geared toward using spiritual gifts to help the church grow, and therefore focuses on some spiritual gifts more than others (to my disappointment, the ones barely touched upon seemed more relevant to me than the ones greatly expounded upon -- ah well, another book perhaps). I appreciated Wagner's candor and openness to other scholar's theories about spiritual giftings, as well as his standpoints on misuses of spiritual gifts.
This book is highly recommended as a place to begin your studies on spiritual giftings, especially in the context of gifts within the church body.
A Great Help For Church Leaders.......1999-02-06
Having taught many seminars over the past seven years on Spiritual Gifts and having helped hundreds of people to find thier unique call to ministry through their giftedness, I found this little book to be a treasure of information. It succinctly describes the value of helping church members discover thier gifts and function out of them, leading to fulfilling and enthusiastic service for the Kingdom of God. Church leaders who have read this book in our setting have stopped looking for just "warm breathing bodies" to fill a position, but instead look for a person whose giftedness qualifies them for it and therefore classic burn-out is kept at a minnimum. Peter Wagner is easy to read and speaks clearly to the lay person.

A Book I Have Mixed Feelings Of, But One That Has Been Highly Influential To Me.......2006-12-26
For those who are not familiar with me, I am an ordained minister, with fundamentalist leanings. This book has been one of the most influential books in my life. However, there are items in this book I strongly disagree with.
C. Peter Wagner, for those who aren't familiar with him, is a church growth specialist, with Charistmatic leanings. His church growth credentials are what makes this book important. Most spiritual gift questionnaires and books are focused on either helping the individual discover their own gift(s) or to correct perceived errors in teaching of gifts (primarily by those who believe tongues and other gifts have ceased.) This book has the focus of the role of the individual's gifts in achieving the mission of the corporate church.
Most spiritual gift lists are focused on the three passages dealt with for spiritual gifts (Romans 12, 1 Corinthians 12, and Ephesians 4:11). Wagner points out that none of the three lists are complete, and then takes the next step of questioning if the three lists combined are complete. He then adds five gifts to the list from other portions of the New Testament (celibacy, voluntary poverty, martyrdom, missionary, and hospitality). Then, he questions if the New Testament lists all spiritual gifts, and adds intercession and exorcism as gifts not mentioned as such Biblically.
Wagner deals with the two related subjects of Christian roles and gift projection. He points out that most of the gifts, which select individuals possess, have a corresponding Christian role that all Christians should exercise. For example, some Christians have the gift of evangelism, but all Christians have the role of witnessing. Gift projection comes when someone believes that all Christians should be exercising a certain gift; Wagner points out that tongues and evangelism are gifts that are projected.
Let me interject a personal comment. I am a Christian who has been disappointed at not seeing more souls saved through my witnessing, and wondering why. Wagner relates that he had the same struggle, but realized that his gifts were knowledge (which he defines as having knowledge, as opposed to knowing something supernaturally, as you can see on the 700 Club) and teaching. He mentions some people gifted in evangelism, when on an airplane, pray that someone sits next to them who they can witness to. Wagner prays that the seat next to his is empty, and he comes prepared with books to read and study to strengthen his gifts of teaching and knowledge. He mentions sometimes God does allow someone to sit next to him, and the open books are a springboard for Wagner to exercise his role as witness.
Another point of this book that influenced me is his view of the gift of pastor. Wagner points out that he feels there are three levels of ministry in the local church: the celebration (everybody), the congregation (20-200), and the cell (8-12). He feels the pastor is equipped to serve in the congregation group, spiritually leading that group. He feels that the gift of pastor is not necessary for a church growth minded church, and that a pastor with that gift may be uncomfortable when his church grows past 200.
There are some things I disagree with in this book. First, I am a little uncomfortable about going beyond Scripture for spiritual gifts, though I do see his logic in doing so. Second, he commented that in the life of his friend John Wimber his pre-salvation sales experience crossed over into the gift of evangelism -- I have problems with seeing evangelism as closing a sales deal.
I believe every church should have this book in their library. Yes, it is written by a person open to the Charismatic movement, but Wagner has no agenda of charismaticizing non-Charismatic churches in this book.

Easy Delicious baking.......2007-08-31
I checked out this book from the library and was inspired to buy it, I had to have my own copy! My favorite recipe is the blueberry muffins with the crumb topping, so easy to whip up. My 14 yr. old daughter loves to use the book often and surprises us with delicious treats. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves to bake, specially with such easy, delicious recipes.
YUMMY!.......2007-07-13
I have made about 10 of the recipes out of this book and we have loved all of them. I am looking forward to baking my way through it. The microwave brownies are so simple and our families quick chocolate fix.
Great Book!.......2007-05-21
As the mother of 2 little girls, I am finding a huge need for baked goods for all kinds of functions. So far everything I've made has been awesome - and simple. If you have children, this a great book to add to the collection!
I'm a mom and I like this book!.......2007-04-08
Like the author, I am a mother of 2 small kids and a professional chef. I work, I can cook fancy dishes with the best of them, but for birthday parties, playdates and bake sales. I have to put on a different hat and make simple, delicious things kids love - this is the book I use for that purpose. I've made a number of the recipes - the brownies and their variations are particular favorite. After I discovered the Microwave Brownie recipe, I think I gained 5 pounds, because I can now make brownies in 10 minutes from start to finish and I usually have all the ingredients in the house!

Pretty good.......2007-07-20
This book has some good recipes, but not as many along the lines of what I was looking for. I stick mainly to organic and natural recipes, and this book does not have as many along those lines. That is why I gave it 3 stars...but for those who don't mind as much with the ingredients they use, this is a pretty good book.
good gifts from the home, .......2006-10-14
This book is probably as helpful as her other book that I bought. None of the recipes work. Kelly would have you believe that adding 1/2 teaspoon of table salt to 1/4 cup of shampoo concentrate and 3/4 cup of distilled water will be transformed into a product that you would be delighted to use. You are also expected to be able to grate a bar of Ivory soap (highly improbable that you will succeed). The Ivory soap is to be mixed with other ingredients to end up with a product you will be happy to give or to use.
I have bought many books on soapmaking and other bath and body products.
There is nothing in this book that makes it worth the $12.00 that I spent. Save your money and look for books written by authors who really have excellent credentials regarding bath and body products one can make at home.
One author I particularly like is Susan Miller Cavitch.
Other authors I would highly recommend are Ann Bramson,Norma Coney, and Melinda Coss
I would not even give this book a 1 star rating; actually a minus 5 would be closer to how annoyed and disgusted I was by the book I bought.
Great for Beginners.......2000-10-20
Kelly Reno has done a great job of writing books that are helpful for those just starting out. It is amazing that you can make your own lotions and change the scents to match yourself or your friends. The lotions are heavy and greasy, but I think its because our idea of lotions are those that are so heavy with lotions (with alcohols) that we expect it to soak right in instead of using the healing properties of the oils.
The bath beads turned out great. My first batch was great, but all the rest (go figure) I had to add a little more dry product to it so it wasn't so sticky. Its like cooking, its all an experiment and you just have to "season" it the way you like it.
Highly reccommended!
Good Clean Fun.......2000-05-21
A great little book of recipes to pamper body and soul. Good recipes with readily available ingredients and easy to follow directions. The end results appear almost as if by magic.
Good ideas...but so-so recipes.......1999-01-08
I find the the lotion and cream recipes to be far too heavy and greasy. Also, the solid rose and milk bath tablets did not work well when actually used in the bath. I get the impression that the recipes need some adjustment.

For many devoted owners, the cliché that dog is man's best friend does not effectively communicate the significant role that their dogs play in their lives. Nor does simply owning a dog, as is delightfully demonstrated in Living with Dogs: Collecting and Traditions, at Home and Afield, a celebration of owners whose love for their canines manifests itself not only in how they share their lives with their pets, but also in their collecting and decorating habits as well. From enthusiastic breeders and trainers to passionate pet professionals--and, of course, the owners themselves--authors Laurence and Carol Sheehan, along with photographer William Stites and designer Kathryn George Precourt, present 26 charming essays and 400 full-color photographs that capture "the experiences of dogs and people--at home, in the country, in the city, and even at work, with a special focus on the nostalgic memorabilia that remind people of their devotion to their pets." At fashion designer Carolyne Roehme's sprawling country estate, paintings of noble hounds, priceless antiques, and various canine artifacts share space with six roving rovers. Dr. Fred Cesana, a Connecticut vet, invites both owner and dog into his clinic with an impressive collection of vintage veterinary pieces. And at Lucinda Lang's "springer heaven"--otherwise known as Tenants Harbor, Maine--the considerable offspring of Lang's three springers come often to romp amidst a houseful of dog photos, paintings, pillows, and figurines. Man's relationship with the world of dogs is not only universal, but also frequently all-encompassing, influencing how we live, what we collect, and how we spend our leisure time. Living with Dogs explores the multitude of ways that dog owners share their lives with their pets. In 26 delightfully written stories, a witty, admiring text, and 400 full-color photographs, the authors of The Sporting Life and A Passion for Golf capture the experiences of dogs and people--at home, in the country, in the city, and even at work, with a special focus on the nostalgic memorabilia that remind people of their devotion to their pets.
The authors visit passionate owners, breeders, trainers, and collectors across the country and offer a look into their dog-filled lives. Profiles include an interior designer who has amassed a lifetime of canine art; a collector with a house full of four-legged porcelain figurines; a bibliophile with an outstanding assortment of dog-literature first editions; an artist who specializes in dog portraits; and a veterinarian who proudly displays antique tools of his trade. The authors also focus on other aspects of dog devotion, including the Philadelphia All-Terrier Show; a hotel decorated with canine appointments; a New England camp exclusively for dogs; a boutique devoted to canine accessories; the American Kennel Club; and a Manhattan gallery specializing in 19th-century dog art.
Whether they are devoted to a particular breed or have simply fallen in love with dogs in general, the people featured here have succumbed to the "Slipcover School of Dog Management, allowing their dogs the complete run of their lives as well as their hearts.
With an extensive resource list that includes dog art galleries, dog shows, kennel clubs, breeders, supply houses, and more, Living with Dogs is the ultimate tribute to canine companions.
In 26 stories and 400 full-color photographs of homes, collections, galleries, meets, shows, kennels, and camps,
Living with Dogs celebrates the devotion and passion of the millions of Americans for whom a life without dogs is not worth living.

Heartwarming.......2003-04-24
I have read several other books with the same theme, however this book surpasses them all. Our copy is well loved and our guests tend to migrate toward it at our home. The book contains the stories of several people and how dogs have touched their lives. It is a glimpse into personal collections of avid dog lovers and collectors.
All Dog Collectors must have this book!.......2000-04-16
I am an avid collector of dog memorabilia and motif items and this book was an inspiration! My husband just thought I was obsessive about dog objects! Your book gave me new ideas for old dog items that I never would have thought of. The photography is beautiful and the subjects are warm and true. I know that I am not alone in my endeavor to collect and display what I love!
A beautiful book for serious dog-lovers........1999-07-23
I've always had an affinity for dogs and the people who love them, which is probably why this book now occupies the premier spot on my coffee table. After reading the introduction by Larry Sheehan, in which he shares hilarious and endearing tales about his dog, Buster, I knew I'd found someone who truly understood what it means to live with and love dogs. Even bad ones. The book is a celebration of hardcore dog enthusiasm. It's fun to learn about other people's passion for various breeds. What's more, the pages are filled with pictures of beautiful dogs, beautiful homes, and beautiful places. I got tons of inspiration for decorating my home and incorporating my love of dogs into my life. This book would make a wonderful gift.
Bow-wow-wow!.......1999-06-18
Even though I like dogs, I'm not obsessed. So I was surprised to find myself devouring this huge coffee-table book. It will certainly rivet any dog lover. Thoughtful, informative essays cover a wide range of topics--including shows, field trials, grooming, boutiques, collectibles, celebrity dog owners, etc. Author Laurence Sheehan siezes the reader's attention with his engaging (and often lighthearted) profiles of this motley collection of men and women whose lives, in one way or another, have been changed, or even defined, by their unique relationships with dogs. William Stites' photographs are mesmerizing. I can't seem to forget one image of a pair of solemn pointer pups cradled in the weatherworn hands of a veteran breeder--who also, Sheehan reveals, just happens to be a talented sculptor of the pointers he's made his vocation for the past sixty years. The last chapter, a lingering look at monuments and memorials to departed pets, is particularly affecting. I love this book and highly recommend it.
