Book Description
The prizewinning writer Luis Alberto Urrea's long-awaited novel is an epic mystical drama of a young woman's sudden sainthood in late 19th-century Mexico.
Customer Reviews:
Great book.......2007-09-20
Like many have said in their reviews so far, the story was very hard to start, especially for myself. I generally read from a different genre of fiction, and my wife told me that it was a must read. It took me a while to actually get into the story, and once I did, I could not put it down. Give it a chance, and you will not be sorry.
Fascinating........2007-09-18
Great book. Mythical and quite Latin in its writing, with lots of fantasy, but very grounded in some "rational" characters versus "magical" ones. Beautiful prose.
I Couldn't Finish It.......2007-09-10
I picked up The Hummingbird's Daughter by Luis Alberto Urrea and I put it back down again after 100 pages. I just could NOT get into this book. I could not care about the characters. It should be easy to care about Thersea/Terista, but I couldn't do it. Obviously, I am in the minority of reviewers. This book has received so many good reviews that I can't help but think maybe it is me. Maybe I was not in the right mood to read this book, regardless, this is one of the very few books I have refused to continue reading.
The book seems to have a good story, but it is the writer's style that annoyed me to the point of putting it down. If the book is praised for its descriptiveness than apparently being descriptive is only about writing ten different ways to say the same thing. I could not feel the words to this book. I did not know what the characters felt. I knew that Treista was beat and thrown to spend the night with the pigs, but I did not know how the mud felt against her skin, what the temperature was like outside. What parts of her body hurt? How she felt about her aunt? These are the things I want to know when I read a book, these are the descriptions that carry me into a book and out of my living room/metra train. This is why I couldn't finish the book. With more showing than telling I never felt like I knew any of the characters and even worse, after 100 pages, I didn't care to know them.
Fabulous!.......2007-08-11
Great book! It has everything a great book could possibly include. Loved every minute. It dragged a bit at the end but generally was a wonderful reading experience. I miss this book.
A living work of art! The book breathes!.......2007-07-31
I finished it today at 12:56 P.M. It was the largest undertaking I have attempted with regards to reading a book. four hundred and ninety-five pages, plus a "must read" essay by the author at the end in the paperback edition.
I can tell you that I feel like I watched the story unfold, just as if I was right there on the ranch like one of the more senior cowboys. Someone that wouldn't say much, but would be privy to the occasional first-hand conversation or much second-hand retelling from Segundo. I dare not assume to think the author's thoughts, but I confidently put forth that this is his very goal, as it probably is with all of his writings. At least that has been my experience. This is my fourth book by Luis. He wants you to walk right next to him and/or his characters as they experience life.
I can not think of a better way to put it: Mr. Urrea paints pictures with his words in a way I can only describe as vivid, incredible, and detailed. He leaves little room for interpretation, which may not seem like a desirable concept at first, however, it is this ability which is the very essence of why I am drawn right into the scene! The author covers the tiniest of details, so that a person can smell the smells, see the different shades of the same colors, taste the tastes, feel the moment - good or bad, pain or pleasure, joy or disgust! It is simply incredible! It is the difference between a Thomas Kinkade painting and a similar painting by another. The latter may be a priceless work of art, but the way Thomas paints the light into his art makes it come alive to the point you have to stop yourself from reaching out and touching it; believing the experience is actually unfolding in the scene before your very eyes! This is the only way I can adequately describe what he does with words is to compare it to painting. Frankly, I dare say writing this way is the much harder task, which commands a deeper level of appreciation!
The life-long journey to write this book and the fact that it is historical fiction, right out of the author's own family's history, makes me appreciate it all the more. I feel like I have shared, not in the blood, sweat and tears of its research and writing, but the blessing of its culmination.
Sometimes I wish I could be a fly on the wall, as the author thinks aloud, so I could better understand the experiences as he recounts them to himself and the spirits around him, but then I realize with great delight, that the very thing I desire is in my hands, a carefully crafted journal written by the one who experienced it.
The healing of others continues in the Urrea blood line...
Thank you for giving me and all of the world this part of you, Don Luis! Thank you for acknowledging our Creator by being the man that was given the five talents and set out with determination to bring the Lord back ten!
The Hummingbird's Daughter is a book that will challenge you, teach you, delight you, disgust you, and make you contemplate life.

Would the real Carolyn Davidson please stand up!!.......2006-07-13
Believe me, I am being overly generous in giving this book two stars. The only reason I'm doing so is because I have read many, many of Carolyn Davidson's books and even though they can not all be 5+ this one is pitiful!
It seems almost as if it was written by a different person. There is no spark, no life, no depth of character. There is not even any true feeling of what the landscape looks like, much less the people. Our hero was not loveable or gallant. He actually thinks he is handsome! A real gag for me. The heroine is someone I just wanted to smack on the head and tell her to grow up. She signed on for the mailorder bride situation. What did she think was going to happen when she finally got to her destination? She was totally dishonest in her representation of herself. And please, what in the world did the author think she was doing having HIM move into town to the boarding house to be close to HER?
Bad, bad, bad, bad. Save your money. Instead, read Maggie's Beau, The Tender Stranger, Texas Lawman or A Marriage by Chance. All are by this author (obviously in her previous life) and all rate a 5 from me.
Now if we could just have someone say, "Would the real Carolyn Davidson please stand up"!!!
A True Disapointment.......2005-11-04
As a huge fan of this author, I was very disapointed in this book. I have read everything by her and this one left me wondering "what happened?"
Lucas O'Reilly has ordered a mailorder bride from an agency in New York, requesting a woman who can cook, clean, etc. What he gets is Jennifer Alston, who can't do either and to me, was ungrateful, rude and unlikeable.
She came to Thunder Canyon for marriage but acted like she was put out by the whole idea. The fact that the marriage remained unconsumated for a very long time, that her husband would be that tolerent with this annoying female was unrealistic. The whole book was just boring, unbelieveable and lacked any spark...skip this one.

Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03
An interesting sounding premise, as a group of experienced, inexperienced and new heroes is being very well funded by a mysterous benefactor, and told to be proactive in looking for bad guys. Nightwing, Arsenal and Jade form the experienced core, add to them a bouncer, Black Lightning's daughter, an element man and an android to the lineup and all will not go as they expect.
nice start.......2006-01-14
I had no idea what I was getting into with this one. I've always been a big night wing fan, but didn't know much about the other team members.
I think this is the beggining of a great run of comics. Team books these days seem to have that feeling of forced interaction, ie the JLA books, the x-men books, but not this one. The diverse characters don't feel forced and neither do thier relationships, or purpose in the DC universe. They have a reason for doing what they are doing and it feels real. Grace is a super cool chick and i really like this new metamorpho, shift guy.
I hope this one keeps getting better and don't doubt that it will.
Better than you're probably thinking.......2005-10-18
Crappy heroes, a crappy idea---who would've thought that it turns out to be a half-decent book. A little too "hip" and "trendy" for my taste, but the campiness makes it fun. I hate Nightwing with a passion, but I actually found him tolerable.
A suprising effort. Nothing great---but suprising.
Doesn't work for me..........2005-09-01
When I heard all the controversy about The Outsiders I decided to buy me an Outsiders graphic novel. And in my honest opinion The Outsiders just do not work for me.
First of all Winnick likes to fill his pages with words. Lots of words. Winnich is like the Chris Claremont of DC. The pages are just filled with words and in the second chapter of the graphic novel when he introduces where we left off, it is just too too long.
Second the cast it just so...off. Nightwing is like some complete control freak bastard, but I can't blame considering his teammates. Arsenal for reason I just can't stand. He's just so...ugh. Grace is an uber-bitch who is just plain annoying, and absolutely does NOT fit in the superhero biz. She should have just stuck with the bouncer gig. Thunder is pretty likeably, but the daughter of BLACK LIGHTING! I have never been reminded of such reference. I really don't care for Metamorpho, and as for Jade she has some potential just not on this team. I can imagine her working solo guest starring here and there or maybe in the JSA. But NOT the Outsiders.
I wasn't offended by the raunchiness of this g.n. because I have read much worse, but to Winnick it seems like in order for a comic book to be mature you must add sex & swearing. This is not always true but if you do add these 2 to a comic book make sure they work well and they cancel each other out, or else you will something completely cheesy like this.
Well that's my two cents so, Ciao
(p.s. shoot I forgot about Indigo! O well...like metamorpho somebody I care about.)
Who Knew!.......2005-03-25
Who knew this "Real World" dude could write? Well, he did get an Eisner nomination for "Pedro and Me," his graphic novel about his RW roomie who died of AIDS.
But this book is... GREAT! Outsiders is gritty, funny, and has a great edge to it. Definitely not a book for young kids. It also has some good ol' superhero storytelling, so it's a great blend of the old and new.
The best part (surprisingly) is the Metamorpho storyline, about what happened to him when he disappeared and how he returned, very cool. Great appearance by the Joker too. Winick really knows how to write for Joker (funny and twisted). The artwork is impressive too.
I can't wait to pick up the 2nd TPB!

Outstanding.......2007-09-06
A great resource for small group teachers and pastors. Dr. Morris takes complex scientific and theological issues and makes it understandable and applicable to the layman!
A wonderful value and well worth the investment in your spirit!
great insights into the book of beginnings.......2007-05-20
The Genesis Record is subtitled: A Scientific and Devotional Commentary on the Book of Beginnings. I found this book to be very helpful in helping me to understand the book of Genesis, especially regarding many of the cultural and historical elements to the Book. At 668 pages, it covers a lot of ground and doesn't leave many stones unturned. Morris also does a lot of cross-referencing, letting Scripture explain itself and teach its own concepts. Some of the parts that I found especially enlightening were the following: Morris explains what was going on in "the days of the Noah," and suddenly the parallels to our times stood out very clearly. He also offered an interesting perspective on Noah's sons, and the Hamitic curse, and some of the technological, intellectual, and spiritual trends among general groupings of people. I guess I hadn't really heard anyone explain their perspective on this before, and he takes a very reasonable approach to it (in opposition to those who justify African slavery with the curse of Ham). There was also an aspect to the story of Joseph that especially stuck out to me. I had never thought of Joseph as having a pride problem, but Morris explains his dream-telling in terms of pride, and his Egyptian servitude and imprisonment as God's means of humbling him, so that he could later become the right kind of man to lead a whole country-region without that pride getting in the way. All along the way, this commentary was filled with great insights into the workings of God and His plan as revealed in the book of Genesis.
That said, I had a few reservations:
Published in 1976, this book is one of the early-modern works detailing a scientific approach to a literal interpretation of Genesis. As such there are certain aspects of his explanations that are no longer in use; it's a little bit dated. Young earth creationist theories have grown, been tested, evaluated, discarded, innovated, etc. like a healthy science is supposed to be practiced. Morris helped lay much of the groundwork for this, but even some of his theories have been modified or discarded.
>In cases of doubtful meanings of Scripture, one must not be dogmatic; but, at the same time, he should not forget the cardinal rule of interpretation; the Bible was written to be understood, by commoner as well as scholar. Therefore it should normally be taken literally unless the context both indicates a nonliteral meaning and also makes it clear what the true meaning is intended to be.
< (109)
Morris, in this work (as in others of his), like both of the flagship creationist organizations (ICR, AIG) refuses to address a geocentric approach to the scriptures and astronomy. This being the case, he (and they) leave themselves with one arm tied behind their back in their fight against naturalistic humanistic evolutionistic anti-Bible-ism. Watching a debate between Hugh Ross and Ken Ham, I could see clearly how Ham could have a knock down drag out argument against relativistic bigbangism, if only he would take the same approach to the geocentric scriptures as he takes to the first 11 chapters of Genesis. This double-mindedness is crippling the creationist cause.
>If we would be faithful Bible expositors, therefore, we must be guided by what God has actually said, not what we think He should have said. "For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the Lord" (Isaiah 55:8).
<
My final criticism was the dozens and dozens and dozens of times where Morris said "The English reading here is incorrect..." "a BETTER translation would be" "unfortunately this reading is confusing" "this obscures the point of the passage" etc, etc, etc. If only he would have taken his own advice (above) and applied it to the rest of his work. There's no problem saying "this word can also mean..." but when he goes about correcting God's word, he ends up standing on the same sandy humanistic foundation he so vigorously criticizes in its other forms.
These criticisms aside, I still highly recommend this work to those looking to more fully understand the Book of Beginnings.
The Genesis Record.......2007-04-03
Possibly the best commentary I've ever used. Writen in a way that draws you into the narative and gives insight into the text that makes it easy to teach and apply.
Wonderful!.......2006-12-21
This book is wonderfully written and very detailed. It's a pleasure to read and I would recommend it to anyone that is interested in the most read book known to man.
The Very Best Commentary on the Book of Beginnings.......2004-04-22
Henry Morris is a gifted writer, researcher, and scientist and all of these God-given attributes come out beautifully in his classic commentary on Genesis. I often preach, teach, and write, so anytime the subject is in the first book of the Old Testmant, I immediately reach for my copy of The Genesis Record. It is a thoughtful, accurate guide written from the Creationist Perspective.
And even though Morris is a reknowned defender of the young-earth perspective and the accuracy of the Bible, he also knows quite a bit about the Old Testament. It was very valuable to me for a series of messages I did on the life of Moses.
I would keep this in your library as the first reference on the book of Genesis. It is Henry Morris at his finest.

Guys Who 'Uncork" Will Like It, Too!.......2004-07-15
I have a surprise for you guys who think The Saucy Sisters' Guide to Wine is just for women. It's a great read for guys, too. I not only found it hilarious, but actually learned a good deal about wine and the opposite sex. In a recent movie, Mel Gibson had the ability to hear what women were thinking. Now us guys have the opportunity to read what women are thinking... and how wine plays into everything from popularity and love to sex and health. On page 34, I discovered that, because I enjoy Cabernet Sauvignon, I'm a bit abrasive and immature... but that my depth of character reveals me to be an asset in business and financial concerns... a man who is good for the long haul. Because I also like merlot, I'm supposed to be passionate with music and food. Maybe that's why I write and sing love songs. All jokes aside, this is the perfect gift to give your girlfriend, wife, friend, sister and mother... or anyone else you'd like to see "uncorked." Congratulations wine divas on one of the best books ever written in this genre.
In Vino Veritas..........2004-06-16
A delightful book that is fun, and easy, and wonderfully informative.
Twisted Sisters reviews Saucy Sisters.......2004-04-14
This book is so entertaining that you don't realize how much you are learning. I wish all my schoolbooks could have been written with so much humor and pizazz,I would have learned a lot more
and had a lot more fun doing it. Every paragraph makes you laugh, learn and easily comprehend a very complicated subject matter.
The writing is superb, the content complete, they thought of everything, even answers to questions most people wouldn't even think of asking. This book has all the right elements - plot, drama, humor, history, and sex, assembled in a way that makes it easy to digest and enjoyable to read. Keep it handy for reference, and to liven up a party.
I plan to keep several on hand to give as gifts to my friends who enjoy books and wine as much as I do. As with all good books I hated to finish it - knowing how really hard it is to find a REALLY good read. It makes me hungry for more - what's next, Sisters?
Saucy Sisters Guide to Wine is a must read!.......2004-04-12
I loved this book!! The humorous style in this book is entertaining but does not detract from the valuable information in it. My husband liked it also (so it is a book for men as well). The Saucy Sisters take the mystique out of wine selections and etiquette, without removing the romance associated with enjoying a good (not necessarily expensive) bottle of wine with that special person! Buy this book and be able to converse intelligently with that wine snob that you dread seeing at parties!
This book really ROCKS!!.......2004-04-04
What a treat! I am giving a copy of this wonderful book to all my girlfriends for Christmas this year. It is well researched, well written and so damn funny!!!! At last, I can impress everyone I know with my knowledge of wines.

A fully illustrated Collector's Guide covering all Rollei TLRs produced from 1929 to 1994. Includes production dates and identification hints.
Customer Reviews:
A very detailed source of Rollei TLR info........2004-07-12
I agree with the previous reviewer's five star comments. If you collect or are interested in the Rolleiflex twin lens reflex cameras this is a 'must buy' title, as is its sister book (Complete User's Manual for the Rollei Tlr: For All Rollei Tlr from 1928 to Present 2.8Gx).
For each model of Rollei TLR there is a large, clear, close-up, face-on photo and all of the information about that model on the facing page (cost, serial number range, shutter, dates of production, variants, etc.). This book is a treasure trove of information for the collector. Highly recommended.
A must for Rolleiflex users and collectors.......1998-03-04
Ian Parker is THE expert on Rolleiflex cameras. This book has photos and descriptions of most of the models and changes since the first Heidecke and Franke TLR in the late 20s, helping collectors identify what they have as well as the idiosyncracies of the individual models. Not just a catalogue, the book does offer bits of information including serial numbers, manufacturing dates and closeout dates. It also mentions the benefits of the various optics used throughout Rollei's history. While it spends most of the volume itemizing the inovative TLR camera, it also mentions how each advancement or change affected sales. One note, in this day of popular intelligent cameras, is the fact that the "Magic" models did not fare as well with Rolleiflex purists who may have felt that they gave up a certain amount of creative control by using an automatic camera. Parker points out, however, that the camera serves Rollei well, because it inroduced new users to the automatic camera first thereby drawing their interest to the more complex models. # # #

Craft designer Marie Browning has a knack for inventing wonderful books. Her exquisite creations are shown to great advantage in Handcrafted Journals, Albums, Scrapbooks & More in excellent photographs, and are well explained in step-by-step directions. Folded books, envelope books, and simple bound books come alive with decorative papers (for which she also provides instructions), textural covers, artfully threaded bindings, and lovely embellishments like metal charms, pressed flowers, clip-art labels, ribbons, embossed stamps, and more. Most projects are fairly easy, requiring more patience and time than advanced crafting skill. (For slightly more advanced techniques, consult a volume like Sue Doggett's Bookworks). Browning even includes some clever novelty books, such as wandering books (accordion-fold types that meander when opened) and elegant little covers for sticky notes and message pads. This is a beautiful book about making beautiful books. --Amy Handy

Beautifully done.......2003-07-15
I have not yet started my project, but am confident that this book provides good instruction. The pictures are great, and helpful for sparking new ideas. The instruction is detailed, and there a variety of different techniques displayed. I would have liked a list of sources, instead of just "available fine art stores", but overall this was a good purchase.
the best book I have ever read!.......2003-03-15
I had bought another book in Amazon about scrapbooks and journals and even if it had good pictures of the final projects it lacked photos of the different passages. I have Browning's book now and really you can't go wrong. DIfferent techniques, plenty of explanations, great ideas from the simple "messages" note pad to the more complicated seeds book! I can't wait to try her ideas that I consider as a starting point for my own creativity!
Great Book for Beginners.......2002-07-17
I think this book is an excellent start for beginners. I have never made anything before (book, album, etc.) and once I read through the book one time I was able to make an open spine book in one day. Instructions and photos are great.
Marie Browning Strikes Gold Again!.......2002-01-13
Marie Browning has the Midas Touch when it comes to crafting. On my most cerebrbally challenged "daze" (I have a huge family, toddlers under three!) I can go to any of her books and choose a project that is both challenging and creative, add my own panache and have soemthing that is uniquely "Alouette." Look at her basic pocket accordion book! She has two different examples (business card and stamps) that give way to more inspiration. She is elegant, she is whimsical. Some of her ideas are very masculine, others are delicate and lady-like. (Crafters often get stumped when coming up with ideas for guys-- she has no shortage of masculine ideas!)
The best book of its kind!.......2001-10-05
Of all the manuals that I have seen on handcrafted books, Marie Browning's is the absolute best! Her instructions are precise and easy to follow. She sets out a basic formula for making a book and goes individually through each material necessary. She illustrates the spectrum of materials that can be used for different parts of the process. A must-have for book artists!

Book Description
In the 1920s, the playwright Sidney Howard and his wife, actress Clare Eames, were at the heart of the movement to change the American theater from a commercial enterprise to one with art at its center. Sidney gained fame writing They Knew What They Wanted (which won the Pulitzer Prize) in 1924. A dramatist for the Theatre Guild, he wrote Ned McCobb's Daughter and The Silver Cord and became the voice of American theater's fight against censorship. Energetic and ambitious Clare played some of the greatest dramatic roles for women, including Queen Elizabeth, Lady MacBeth, and Hedda Gabler. For a time, Sidney and Clare were an ideal couple, collaborating on dramas and drawing admirers in both England and America.
This dual biography illuminates the growth of the American art theater, gives intimate details into the work of the couple, and reveals a glamorous doomed romance. The letters interspersed throughout the text detail the couple's thoughts on the artistic process, acting, writing, and the social and theatrical circles in which they moved. Including many letters and reviews from the era, this study describes Sidney and Clare's relationships, careers, and the dramatic disintegration of their marriage, set against the background of one of the most artistically fertile periods of American drama.
