Book Description

Charles Valley’s legendary dowagers, the three Miss Margarets, have lost one of their own: Peggy Garrison, who married into a huge fortune but was constantly overshadowed by the legacy her husband’s first wife, the great Myrtis Garrison. When Peggy’s will is read, the news of who will take over the Garrison fortune shakes the town to its core. To everyone’s shock, Peggy has left all of the Garrison holdings–the world-famous botanical gardens, the massive resort, and the lovely Garrison “Cottage,” where FDR once visited–to the town’s down-and-out wild child, Laurel Selene McCready.

Laurel was like a daughter to Miss Peggy, but the last thing she wants to do is step into Miss Peggy’s shoes as the wealthiest, most powerful person in town, especially since the Garrison fortune never bought Peggy any happiness. On top of that, when Laurel reluctantly explores her hew home, the storied Garrison Cottage, she discovers that mysteries abound when it comes to the great Miss Myrtis. What clues are hidden in an old suitcase containing a child’s dress and sheet music dating back to the Southern Vaudeville circuit? Who is the elderly woman outside Atlanta who has been keeping track of the Garrison estate’s every development via the Charles Valley Gazette? And how will Laurel avoid the fate of her two predecessors whose secrets have far greater implications than Laurel could ever have imagined? Culminating in an unforgettable sleight of hand, proving that behind every great fortune there is a great crime, The Ladies of Garrison Gardens is as page-turning and irresistible as its predecessor.

“Rich, funny . . . Fans of Fannie Flagg and Adriana Trigiani, take note. Shaffer has created a little piece of heaven.”
–The Philadelphia Inquirer

“A romp of a read–warm but never smarmy, wise without pretense of profundity. Shaffer tells a good story that’s part mystery but mostly an exploration of loyalty and friendship.”
–St. Louis Post-Dispatch

“The Miss Margarets are treasures. . . . Shaffer unfolds the story deftly. . . . Each of the three Miss Margarets is a wonderfully realized character; each has a closely guarded secret life.”
–The Boston Globe

3 out of 5 stars Mayra Calvani -- Curled Up With A Good Book.......2006-12-03

The Ladies of Garrison Gardens, a sequel to this author's first book, The Three Miss Margarets (2003), is a light contemporary novel with a rich Southern flavour and a strong touch of mystery.

Peggy Garrison, one of the "three Miss Margarets," has died of cancer and, to the shock of the town, has left her large estate to feisty, thirty-five-year old Laurel Selene McReady, a former journalist to the Charles Valley Gazette who had become very close to this old lady.

Laurel, who up to this date has had to count pennies to keep herself, is understandably overwhelmed. How is she to run Garrison fortune--the famous botanical gardens, the huge resort, and the lovely Garrison "Cottage?" She knows absolutely nothing about business. After a little research, she finds out a new management would do wonders for the poor employees, who hardly have any benefits or health insurance, but her plans are brought to a halt when Garrison lawyer Stuart Lawrence begins to pressure her to give him power of attorney so he can continue to "rule" Garrison Gardens as he always have in the past.

Why has Stuart Lawrence been given power of attorney all these years? What kind of power has he over the family?

Parallel to this mystery is the obsessive interest that a little old lady named Miss Rain has over Garrison Gardens and to everyone and everything related to it. What, in fact, is her connection with the Garrisons? Through her memories the reader will travel to the 1920's, to the time when she was a vaudevillian and her involvement with a mother and a daughter called The Sunshine Sisters. Are they related in any way to the mysterious dress and sheet of music Laurel unexpectedly discovers in an old trunk in the Cottage?

Laurel is certain the Garrison family holds a secret...but what?

Miss Rain, seriously ill in bed, feels she can help the new Garrison heir have control over the evil Stuart Lawrence. With this in mind, she decides to write a long letter revealing the secret. But will her letter reach Laurel in time?

The strength in this novel lies in the way the author brings the south to life with all its sights and sounds. One can feel the warm sun on the daylilies, daffodils and hollyhocks; one can taste the iced tea. The old ladies in the book are lovable, but unfortunately, I wasn't able to relate to Laurel, who's favourite words seem to be the hell with this and the hell with that. Her relationship with the young Dr. Perry, eight years younger than her, adds a twinge of romance to the story. At times the novel moves very slow, particularly during Miss Rain's flashbacks. After all the build-up with Miss Rain's letters, I found the ending utterly disappointing--though I suspect this is to serve the book three in the series. This is not a book worth its hardcover price; I'd recommend readers to wait for the less-expensive paperback edition.

5 out of 5 stars Read the first one first!.......2006-07-28

I haven't read The Three Ms Margaret's yet, so everything would fall into place a bit better, but never mind that. This book was still outstanding!

Lots of southern charm, a bit of mystery about who Mrs Rains is exactly and what does she want with Laurel? Why did Peggy give everything to Laurel in her will? Laurel doesn't know what she wants after inheriting everything, because she didn't grow up with money. Perry, also known as Wiener, seems to have a crush on her, but Laurel is convinced it is a little crush from the olden days.

Will Laurel decide to move into Peggy's house and assume her role, or will she take the money and run? Find out all this and who the infamous Mrs. Rains really is!

2 out of 5 stars The Ladies of Garrison Gardens.......2006-07-06

This is an intriguing story that has, in my opinion a pathetic, weak, frustrating ending. This story sucked me in emotionally and then left me wishing that I had not wasted my time reading it.
Mrs. Rain's story is told throughout the Novel and then her story at the end dies without any resolution...very, very sad and pointless to have such an interesting story end so badly.

4 out of 5 stars Better than the original.......2006-06-05

We return to Charles Valley, Ga., a Miss Margaret short, as Miss Peggy has died and left her estate to Laurel who no longer hates the gals, she's now one of them, albeit not named Margaret.
Will Laurel be able to continue the legacy of Garrison Gardens, and at what price? Why is the price so high? Because someone is blackmailing one of the Margarets and was blackmailing her predecessor.
There is MUCH more of a story here. The characters are better developed as is the plot.
I enjoyed this book so much more than the first.

3 out of 5 stars A light, quick, and fun read........2006-01-17

A light, quick, and fun read. Don't look for much else in this book. It is well written for what type of book it is but it is still your basic troubled girl meets nice boy, nice boy likes her...she doesn't, he winds his way into her heart by helping to solve her problems and they live happily ever after.

5 out of 5 stars You know, I really loved these characters!.......2007-07-05

I went ahead a bought this book even though the reviews were not that good because I had read all of the other books in the series already and I was committed to it. I expected a flop and I got a book that really stuck with me for a while. I think there were a lot of reviews that were just too harsh. I had met Valentine and Nell in the previous books and looked forward to their story. I was not disappointed. I thought the story was perfectly told and I was sorry when I reached the end. I recommend the series.

1 out of 5 stars Same ole story.......2007-03-02

I have loved her past books, but I did not enjoy this at all. It is the SAME story 'bored, over protected, looking for adventury bratty virgin' and the 'over the top, never to marry, sinning nobleman'. This may have worked once, but this book has been written and written and written. Don't waste your time. Sorry Ms. Enoch.

5 out of 5 stars Sin and Sensibility.......2007-02-12

This series of books by Suzanne Enoch were great. The first inspired me to buy all three.

3 out of 5 stars The Title Worked - There Was Some Sin Going On...And Some Being Sensible..........2006-03-04

This is the 2nd book by author S.E. that I have read in the past year. I also read "London's Perfect Scoundrel" (pretty good). My next book, "Sin & Sensibility" was enjoyable as well. While I agree with many other reviewers this book was not deep, complicated or earth shattering to read...it was still charming and enjoyable in all it's simple ways.

The main characters, Eleanor and Valentine each had their plus and minus points. Eleanor was kind, open minded, adventurous and attractive. On the other hand...she was also a bit sheltered, spoiled with money and attention and didn't seem to have made up her mind who she was and what she wanted in life. These negatives were easy to over-look as over-all she was an appealing character. Valentine in turn was handsome, worldly, charming, naughty and bold. On the other hand...he was also a bit coarse, self-fish, good for little besides playing and sexing it up and was in the middle of his life with little direction as to who he was and what he wanted in life. Fortunately, his negatives became easy to over-come as well. Why? Because both Eleanor and Valentine were simply going through the motions of life until they finally "saw" each other for who they really were as people. In that spark of real interest and attraction, they slowly began to change each other into better people and in turn, themselves. They complimented one another well and that allowed their good points to shine and their drawbacks to be minimized.

Eleanors wish to become a woman of the world and full of spirit via "adventures" was a good idea but, a bit weak in this book. She bought sexy gowns from a famous designer, went on independence strike against her brother's domination, she had dinner alone with a man, drove his carriage, went to a gaming club and drank too much and then went swimming naked in the park. I guess for the times, these outings would be viewed with shock and awe should someone find out what and why she was doing things but, I guess these outings were a bit tame for me. I've seen other writers put their heroines on journeys of adventure and discovery that were much more interesting and believable than this. So...nice idea, just dull development.

The intimacy scenes between Eleanor and Valentine were fine. Warm and passionate and very open but...seeing how many woman Val had wooed and slept with over the years, I didn't find anything in their coming together that put fireworks in the sky or bedroom. Their attraction and appeal to one another was real enough, I just wished for more "sizzle" between the two. I bought the friendship, attraction and warm feelings but, the intimacy could have been further developed.

Although I enjoyed Val turning himself around from a serious rake to a one woman man by the end...I thought his page after page of self disclosure and self professed love and adoration of Eleanor was a bit much. For a guy who never liked, loved or disclosed himself before...I think his spilling of the guts went a little over-board. I like a hero that can soften and gentle to a woman's love but, I don't want him becoming a pansy. Val was bordering on going too far in a few passages but, the story ended before too late. I did like that he saw his ugly side and wanted to put that to rest for good and only be a better man with Eleanors love to help him along. One thing I thought was odd...Val thought about loving Eleanor and once he acknowledged it, he acted on it and later told her he loved her. I don't remember Eleanor telling Val of her feelings? She thought it herself of course. She told him said she liked, admired and wanted to marry him but, I don't remember any declarations from her to him about "loving him"? Either I forgot it or it was missed. Interesting.

All the brothers Griffin (Sebastian, Charlemagne (Shay) and Zachary). They were highly protective of their sister and it showed. But...it was nice to see siblings caring about one another and they were certainly a loud, boisterous and interesting group of guys. As many other readers noted, perhaps we will see their stories in the future. They all needed to find a mate and find love still so...maybe there is a future story out there for each one.

Even though I nit picked on a few things that weren't great in this book, I would still recommend this author for casual regency romance reading. She has a light but, historical touch and her books always please. Characters, plots and story lines are appealing for the general reader. I would give this one 3 1/2 stars if I could. Not quite good enough for a 4 or 5 but, still good. Do enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars The beginning of the Griffin stories !.......2006-02-19

This is the first novel about the Griffin family. This novel shares the story of Lady Eleanor the youngest Griffin and the Valentine Corbett close friend of th Griffin and local Rake! Lady Eleanor decides she needs freedom and adventure before she is married and Valentine Corbett promises the family that he will protect her... This was a funny, romantic novel with some great twist. The second Griffin novel An Invitation to Sin is just as wonderful. I look forward the rest of the series.

Caught by Victoria's father in a shockingly sensual kiss, Sin and Vixen have no recourse except a wedding. At first the very liberal lady relishes the thought of an unfettered marriage to an indifferent, unrepentant scoundrel. 5 out of 5 stars For The Heavy of Heart.......2004-09-22

Your Sorrow is My Sorrow is one of those once in a lifetime books. I happened to pick this up by accident, or should I say by divine Providence. The words are comforting whether you have lost a loved one, to death, drugs or mistrust...this book will carry you through. The words of Mary come striking through to the heart and lay to rest in the lap of comfort and solace. The prayers are simple yet heartfelt. This is a book that will get you through the rough times. Thank you Joyce Rupp!

                      5 out of 5 stars A Timely Book.......2000-06-29

Mary has always been upheld as a model for women who wish to follow God's will, as the ideal mother who will comfort her children. But sometimes it is too easy to look merely at the joyous seasons of her life - the birth of her baby and the awe at what she had brought forth. But Mary also suffered greatly. What this book points out is that we are not alone in our pain. A wondrously loving heart has known sorrow, as much as a human should bear, and still feels pain through us, her children. But there is strength and an eternal promise of hope in the knowledge that there is understanding and love, and another heart to bear your burden with you. This book lovingly points out that we are not alone. So often we think we are, when we are suffering greatly. We feel that those around us do not understand, or we feel isolated in our grief and pain. But the truth is, we are never alone, and there is always someone to cling to. That is the message this book quietly and reverently portrays. A timely book, indeed, in a society that has more pain and sorrow than it should.

"I know we eat too many sweets in the South, but that's part of our tradition, and if I couldn't find reasons to celebrate with a beautiful cake, mousse or fruit crisp, I'd invent excuses." So says Martha Pearl Villas, whose classic sweets and down-home cooking savvy are the subject of My Mother's Southern Desserts. Written by her son James Villas, cookbook author and food and wine editor of Town & Country magazine, the book presents nearly 200 straightforward recipes for mouthwatering goodies. Cooks on both sides of the Mason-Dixon Line will be tempted by this accessible collection, as will aficionados of Southern culinary culture.

Organized by holidays and other typical Southern occasions, such as bridge luncheons and charity socials, the recipes include luscious cakes and pies; muffins, fruit desserts, and ice creams; brownies; and confections. Among these are Satan Chocolate Pound Cake with Chocolate Marshmallow Frosting, Secession Brown Betty, Real McCoy Southern Pecan Pie, Essie's Apple Dumplings and Butter Walnut Turtle Bars, to name only a few of Martha Pearl's original and heirloom "receipts." Accompanied by color photos, tips for success, and James Villas's notes on the special context of every dish, the recipes celebrate a vivid cooking heritage and a feisty but endearing master of its art. --Arthur Boehm

5 out of 5 stars Rich, Southern-style favorites that are elegantly simple........2001-08-30

I am really big on Martha Pearl Villas's recipes because there is an elegant simplicity in her tastes, and this is true even of the richest desserts in this book. Often amusingly bossy and opinionated, she is absolutely adamant about not "tarting up" a dessert with extraneous flavors or ingredients. I tried her Confederate Peach Cobbler recently, and it was a real success with my family, including my thinks-he-is-a-food-critic husband. The fresh peaches were cooked just right -- not too sweet and neither too firm nor too soft -- in a crystal-clear filling that let the marvelous peach flavors come through, unobscured by unnecessary spices and extracts. The rich biscuit crust made with heavy cream was scrumptious, the perfect counterpoint to the simple filling. Another great example of such elegant simplicity is the Pineapple Upside-Down Cake, which also came out utterly delectable when I tried it recently. This upside-down cake was not cloyingly sweet like some, for it had just the right amount of brown sugar and butter glazing the pineapples and cherries, and the cake underneath was a simple sponge that was the perfect foil for the rich, caramelized glaze. Though definitely highly caloric, this cake, with its clear fruit flavors and light sponge base, seemed so light that I, surprisingly, felt I could have finished the entire cake in one sitting. I am looking forward to trying all of the recipes in this book. In short, you will find that Martha Pearl Villas does not "re-invent" (i.e., adulterate) the old Southern favorites just to sell a cookbook; these recipes are the real thing. I highly recommend (and own) all of Martha Pearl Villas's cookbooks for their very Southern emphasis on good, true flavors.

4 out of 5 stars Features Delicious and Impressive Desserts.......1999-05-20

Having not had the good fortune to be born a Southerner, I at least had the good taste to marry one! But because the cuisine of North Carolina is so different from my native Western Pennsylvania, I have been learning as much as I can about Southern cooking so that my spouse and I can enjoy the flavors of both regions. For desserts, Miss Martha Pearl and Mr. Villas have put together a staggeringly beautiful array of sweets for every conceivable occasion. The only reason I didn't give this book 5 stars is because some of the recipe directions are a little unclear: the Easter Moravian Sugar Cake, for example, tells you to dissolve yeast and sugar in water in a small bowl but never gets around to telling you when you should incorporate that mixture into your larger bowl of batter dough. While I didn't have any problems decipering the directions myself since I've been baking since I was eight years old, I think of the baking novice whom might get a little frustrated by the lack of detail. That said, this is a beautiful and exciting book made even more enjoyable by the anecdotes regarding family and friends. My only regret is that their first book, My Mother's Southern Kitchen, is out of stock and I can't find a copy anywhere! Kudos to Miss Martha Pearl and Mr. Villas for their wonderful offering.

                      4 out of 5 stars A praiseworthy compilation........1998-10-18

"My Mother's Southern Desserts" is a praiseworthy compilation of recipes from Jim Villas and his mother, Martha Pearl. Her repertoire of sumptuous sweets is organized by holidays and special events. And each recipe has a side-panel, in which Martha Pearl pens an engaging bit of background on the dish at hand. Being both Southern and a dessert lover, I perused this volume with a growling stomach. A handful of dishes that I wanted to bounce up and bake included Chewy Peanut-Chocolate Chip Drop Cookies, The Delta Queen's Pralines, Chocolate Pecan Pie, and--believe it or not--mango ice cream! The book's layout is superb: Simple red dots and lines seperate the recipes' titles, comments, and lists of ingredients. And there are 16, full-page color pictures at the center of the book. Southern food lovers will crave this work.

                        Book Description

Japanese Country Style introduces sixteen unique and sumptuous homes rescued by Yoshihiro Takishita, a professional antiquarian, and illustrates how his renovations rejuvenated these all-but-forgotten architectural gems. Takishita candidly discusses the thoughts and inspirations that led him to adapt and convert these centuries-old farmhouses for modern living. Chapters on their unique history and construction demonstrate the value of these towering traditional homes, and illustrate their place in Japanese rural life, where several generations often lived under the same roof which allowed for a horse in the stable area and silkworms in the attic. Japanese Country Style also showcases the artful blending of traditional Japanese elements with modern lifestyles. Tatami rooms, Japanese antiques, traditional wooden furniture, and other treasures fill the rooms of these homes, and evoke the understated elegance of country-style living. With over 200 photographs and illustrations of beautifully refurbished folk homes, this volume presents a portrait of a sublime yet simple way of life that will give anyone interested in design and architecture a host it useful ideas. This books adopts a bilingual format, providing both Japanese and English commentary.

Enjoyable reading. The author lovingly describes how he relocated and remodeled a selection of traditional Japanese farm houses that otherwise would have been destroyed. The descriptions of each house includes anectodal notes as well as beautiful photos of the houses interiors & exteriors. Thank goodness there are people who are interested in preserving a nation's cultural heritage.

Despite the title, this book covers a lot more than just the authoring of old Universal Studios screenplays. Curt Siodmak has strong opinions and can't help but mention them at any point in his story (even if he repeats himself a bit). Sort of a raw, stream of consciouss style with a bit more discipline than that. A really good read, covering WWII Europe, Hollywood, and the brothers Siodmak.
