Book Description
From the creator of the inimitable, zany sleuth Bubbles Yablonsky comes a witty, wild, and shocking tale about love suburban style. News bulletin: Gone is HBO's Sex and the City. Sex has moved to the suburbs. Here is where you'll find ABC's #1 TV show Desperate Housewives. Here too is The Secret Lives of Fortunate Wives, a hilarious but poignant and spot-on novel about love and betrayal inside the world of the gated community.
Pampered Hunting Hills, Ohio, socialite Marti Denton never realized she was madly in love with John Harding until he impulsively married Claire Stark, a beautiful but socially awkward newspaper reporter to whom a coming-out party is a controversy, not a tradition. It's not until the Hunting Hills wives are plunged into a series of explosive scandals that the two women reach a new understanding of each other and what it means to be a fortunate wife in the twenty-first century. In The Secret Lives of Fortunate Wives, Sarah Strohmeyer has written a Stepford Wives for our timefunny, wise, and eye-opening.
Praise for Strohmeyer's Bubbles series:
Meet Bubbles Yablonsky, beautician-reporter-sleuth and blazing star of Strohmeyer's entertaining, establishment-bashing debut.

A easty but shallow read.......2007-03-03
The Secret Lives of Fortunate Wives combines the classic "fish out of water" element with a touch of the Stepford Wives. John Harding, the most eligable bachelor in Hunting Hills comes home with a surprise. A new wife. Not only is she a surprise, she is not from Hunting Hills and not part of the rarified world inhabited by Lisa, Marti, Karen and John's ex-wife, Boots. Claire also is a working journalist and has a life outside of clothes, decorating, life coaches and the occasional affair (usually with the husband of one of their "dearest" friends). There are definite rules about how a Hunting Hills wife behaves, and it looks as though Claire isn't about to buy into the Hunting Hills ideal. But, she seems to embrace the silliness and even though glimmers of the character we hope Claire would be, she verges on becomming just another silly wife, just not as offensive. The evolution of Marti, is so quick and so back and forth it is hard to buy. Karen, undergoes a real tragedy and then returns to the unbearable homelife she sought to flee. It is a mishmash. The most disappointing element of this book is the quickness with which Claire seems to embrace Hunting Hiills' warped sensabilities. John is rarely in the picture and the plotline involving Marti's husband is just too hard to swallow. It was a fun read, but not what I had hoped it could be.
I wonder if the author knows any WASPS.......2007-02-08
Nanny Diaries is a more accurate and entertaining peak into the lives of superficial and rich housewives. After reading this book, I wondered if the author knows any WASPS in real life.
The Secret Lives of Fortunate Wives.......2007-01-23
This book was not one of Sarah Strohmeyer's best.
I was really turned off to the book when two of her characters used the phrase "Christ on a stick"...
It is offensive to me, and very unessessary to the plot of the book.
A much better book by Sarah Strohmeyer was: "The Cinderella Pact"
A Smashingly funny novel full of pure chick lit; all skinny and tanned and shopahilcs. .......2006-12-17
This is my first Sarah Strohmeyer book, I haven't read her Bubble Series and this is simply because I am not fond of Series they sort of get monotemathic for me but this book was a pleasant surprise.
This book reminds me of the Stepford Wives and its just so funny yet sad; these women live lives of vanity and lies, they fast for days at a time and live on diets, they shop till they drop without letting their hubbies worry them one bit. They have a set of "rules" they live by and its funny to find Claire Stark (ethical ex journalist and redhead newlywed to John Harding - aka millionaire and bachelor of the Hunting Hills Society) living among these Hunting Hills wives, all perfect, subued with narcotics or their drug of preference, and tanned skinny size 2's and God forbid they put and ounze on their slender hips, they are cool fashionistas dressed to the nines who cheat on their husbands and lie shamelessly and live for appearances period.
The book is wickedly funny and sharp, these girls are so calculating and vengeful, and yet they find a friend in Claire and Claire finds that Hunting Hills is really a great place to live, a nice place where you were known and where her love had blossomed and her family had set roots. Good entertainment, go for it.
One of the better books I have read this year........2006-10-24
A very good storyline, interesting characters, I picked this book up and finished it the next day. I would highly recommend this to anyone who wants to take a peek inside the world of the upper crust "gently bred" cast of characters that inhabit this book.

Utterly dire and a waste of time.......2005-06-25
I am not really sure why I bought this in the first place; can't recall what I might have read about it that made me think I would find it an entertaining read. Although I initially was going to give it one star, I'm giving it two because I did read the whole of "Beloved" which is Simon's story. However, it was so acutely awful that I did not even consider wasting my time by reading "Callaghan's Bride", the second story in the volume.
I guess Diana Palmer sells a lot of books as she has a huge backlist. But, if this a sample of her usual output, well, words fail me. I definitely won't be trying again.
If you want to read what I would truly like to say here, then have a look at the All About Romance website's take on this double header. It's puerile, trite fiction with utterly forgettable, one-dimensional, cardboard characters who arouse no interest, sympathy or attraction. Indeed, they are like some dreadful characters out of a 1950s "B" movie acting out a story about rich folk in Texas with banal, stiff dialogue. It was so bad I can't go on. And I cannot even give this to the church fete bookstall - this one is going in the bin.
PS - changed my mind - back to one star ............ and although I am sorry to be so negative, I am also trying to be honest here.
Great stories to enjoy.......2005-06-14
I had never read the Hart Brothers stories when they came out as single titles a long time ago, so I was excited to see that I could read two of them in one book, instead of trotting all over creation to try and find them one by one. I was not disappointed! I can't wait to read the other brother's stories now, after reading Simon's and Callaghan's.
I enjoyed Simon's story a little more than Callaghan's because of Tira (the leading lady of the story). She was very likeable and strong willed. She didn't let Simon's actions or his behavior bring her down. I love stories where the woman holds her own and not lets the man walk all over her. Simon was very strong and a great man to read about. They both were married before to other people and it turned out to be a tragic experience for them both. Tira's ex-husband and Simon were friends and he blames her for his death. So, at the beginning of the book, he already hates her. Tira has always been in love with Simon and vows that he won't hurt her anymore. So she moves on with her life. Then as the story goes on, we see that it is actually Simon and not Tira that has trouble moving on with their life. He realizes that he was all wrong about her and that she was the victim, not her ex-husband. The part about where she tries to live with/catch the mouse is so funny, that I love this book just for that. Read it and understand more! There is only one negative trait that I couldn't stand in Simon and that he was so jealous of Tira and her BEST FRIEND Charles that he had to go around with Jill (Tira's worst enemy). That was only to make her jealous of course, but I found it to be low and pitiful. Jill was an evil character in this book. I hated her and would have liked to have read the story without her in it.
Callaghan's story was good, but in the first chapter's of the Story, you come to hate the man. He is actually scary in the first couple of chapters. Tess is the Hart brother's cook/housekeeper. She lives with Ray, Leo, and Callaghan after her father dies and becomes their cook. Callaghan is attracted to her from the start and throughout the whole story fights his feelings for her (even up the the very end). His reason for hating women is a little flimsy (not a good enough one). At the beginning of the story we learn right off bat that Callaghan has a temper. He throws a birthday cake against the wall that Tess spent hours making for him and then he threatens her just because she was trying to be nice. I think that Tess should have left as soon as she could pack. He was pretty mean to her throughout the whole story. In the middle of the story, Callaghan gets drunk and stumbles into her room at night. He wakes her up thinking that they would have sex and then he just passes out. Well, in the morning he thinks that they slept together so, they get married. On their wedding night, he realizes that they never slept together because she is still a virgin and then he says some pretty NASTY things to her. I think that she should have never forgiven him for that, because he was the one who went into her room in the first place. Also, if he didn't want to get married than why do it? That whole scene threw me off of really enjoying this story.
Overall, I liked Simon's story a lot better but, I guess there will always be one that you like better over the other.

The Jedi are back and ready to rumble in Dark Tide 1: Onslaught, the second book to appear in Del Rey's five-year New Jedi Order story arc, which picks up events 25 years after A New Hope. Reading R.A. Salvatore's Vector Prime first--while not necessary (and some fans even recommend against it)--will help enormously in understanding the alien threat facing the New Republic, the sinister Yuuzhan Vong. The Jedi, under the now truly formidable Luke, must rise to beat back the biotech-wielding invaders, and we really get to see the Solo kids and good ol' Corran Horn shine. Lando and especially Han get short shrift (that's probably just as well in this new series), but Luke and Mara still manage to get a whole lot of lovin' going on. This is excellent work by the ever popular Stackpole (Rogue Squadron). --Paul Hughes

The New Jedi Order marches on.......2007-08-30
Onslaught is the first book in Michael Stackpole's Dark Tide duology, and the second book overall in the New Jedi Order saga. Picking up where Vector Prime (Star Wars: The New Jedi Order, Book 1) left off, Onslaught finds the technology-hating and pain-obsessed Yuuzhan Vong continuing their invasion of the Outer Rim planets. The New Republic politicians would rather scheme and debate rather than meet this challenge head-on, so it's up to the Jedi and Rogue Squadron to try and repel the Vong invasion.
Stackpole's previous Star Wars experience was with the excellent X-Wing Rogue Squadron series, so key characters like Corran Horn and Gavin Darklighter play key roles in Onslaught, as do Luke and Mara Skywalker and the Solo children, who are finally starting to emerge from their parents' shadows. The author also places plenty of emphasis on the ground and especially air battles, which is in keeping with his X-Wing background.
While this chapter in the New Jedi Order is relatively free of casualties, the mood is still very grim. The Yuuzhan Vong invasion has tested our heroes to the limit, and this is only the beginning. The book suffers from two real flaws. One is that we really aren't given any insight into the Vong that we didn't get from Vector Prime until the epilogue. The other, and this is something that shows up often in Stackpole's work, is that his characters tend to say things that nobody - in any galaxy - would ever say out loud. I'm all for characters that are introspective and seek to learn new things about themselves and their place in the grand scheme of things, but that kind of stuff should be thought, not spoken in every casual conversation. I found myself wondering whether these Jedi Knights were preparing for battle or a group therapy session!
Those gripes aside, Stackpole does a decent job of moving the series forward, and since I'm on my third trip through the series I know that the story improves greatly in Dark Tide II: Ruin (Star Wars: The New Jedi Order, Book 3).

Book Description
When it was published in 1987, Letting God was the first book to explore the themes of the Twelve-Step programs within the context of Christian tradition. Now revised to emphasize its spiritual focus, and including an introduction presenting a monthly theme, each daily reading begins with a selection from the New Testament. These are followed by eloquent, thought-provoking meditations that reveal how the passages apply to Christian living today, and conclude with a brief prayer. This inspiring daily devotional strengthens and encourages the reader, providing sustenance for the sould and practical insights on everyday life.

An excellent sellection of prayers!.......2007-09-05
This is an excellent selection of Earth-centered prayers. I borrowed an instructor's copy, and had to acquire a hard-bound copy for myself!
An Excellent Gift Book.......2007-04-09
I've given this book as a gift to several friends and subsequently seen it in their homes filled with post-it notes and bookmarks denoting their favorite poems. The editors have drawn from a rich variety of sources including Walt Whitman, Mary Oliver, Wallace Stegner, Hildegard of Bingen, and D. H. Lawrence, to name only a few. The book is divided into four parts: The Ecological Self, A Sacred Place, The Passion of the Earth, and Healing the Whole. Don't miss A Calendar of Earth Prayers in the appendix which features a month-by-month catalog of religious, spiritual, Native American, and pagan earth celebrations.
steady delight.......2007-01-10
This is one of my favorite collections of prayers and reflections. I have used it constantly since it was published and give it away regularly. And I only hear good things about it from those to whom I have given it.
Wonderful and Diverse!.......2006-09-07
I picked this book up at a local earthy-metaphysical store I discovered, and I absolutely love it! It has so many diverse and beautiful prayers and poetry! Being Pagan, I've used some in ritual, but of course this is a multi-religion book! Or it's just great to read on a rainy day. I highly reccommend it, especially to Pagans!
Earth Prayers From around the World: 365 Prayers, Poems, and Invocations for Honoring the Earth .......2005-08-02
This book contains a collection of writings that capture the heart and mind in relationship to humanity, God, higher power, nature and the environment. It is a gem for those who look to enrich and develop their spirituality in prayer/conversation. Some may see it as a modern psalter or book of Wisdom. Whatever one's religious experience, deepening and broadening their awareness of the holy and sacred can be experienced through meditating upon these words and entering into the spirit of the authors. Many will find this to be a great place to find a reflection or prayer before a meeting or a journey. The uses are limitless and text great.

Customer Reviews:
I love this book!!!.......2006-02-26
This is a great source of information and recipes on Mexican grilling. It offers a wide range of ricados and salsas using generally available ingredients to keep you grillng for months. Enjoy!
Misspelling.......2000-08-19
I hesitate to order this cookbook because the main word in the title is misspelled: it should be "parrilla".
An inspiring book for serious cooks of Mexican cuisine.......1998-08-30
Learn the spice rubs-"recados," a panoply of salsas and the art of simple grilling for sumptuous results.
Gorgeous pictures, big format, inspiring recipes -- you'll want to dive in immediately.
This is the real deal. If you're already an experienced cook and you know that most of the Mexican food served in the US is bogus, then you'll really appreciate this book.
My only caveat is that I wish Mr. Hearon got a little more technical in terms of the cooking techniques. I also wish that he would have illustrated the many varieties of peppers and herbs he cites for easy identification.
If you love to cook with spices and herbs, and are into grilling artistry, this is a must-have!
Mexican cooking way beyond Taco Bell !!.......1997-08-15
Sombrero's off to Reed Hearon!
The contents of this book can not even describe
the wonderful flavors that are produced when you
taste some of the recipes that are presented in
this handy little cookbook. Some of the styles of
marinading and blending of different spices and chiles
have to be tasted to be believed! One of my favorites
turned out to be the Chipotle Rub,which I have been using
on everything.
On the down side I wish Mr. Hearon would
have labeled all of his wonderful pictures. Many times
I looked at the photos and wondered if thats what I was
making.I could say that the author was a little vague
on the equipment and instructions on some things. I know
I have cursed Reed for wasting a bunch of my Chipotle
peppers because I didnt understand how to fry them.
If Mr. Hearon writes another cookbook on mexican with
the same style and content as La Parilla I will be first
in line for it!! Thanks for the experience!

One of a series of books by JERRI FARRIS & TIM HIMSEL..........2007-07-26
If you are familiar with the other books by Himsel and Farris, then this book will not disappoint!
Himsel and Farris wrote a series of books that follow the same format as this "Cottage Style" book. (By the way, the other books in this series are called: "Flea Market Style", "Garden Style", and "Cabin Style").
Anyhow, this Farris/Himsel book follows the following format:
.... First, it shows gorgeous photos of beautiful Cottage-Style rooms, with various colors & furnishings throughout.
... Second, the authors chose a few furniture pieces or accessories from each of the rooms and then they show the reader, in STEPS-BY-STEPS, how to recreate the given object. The directions are easy to follow. Measurements are given . The objects themselves could easily be used in any Cottage or casual home.
This team is , as always, very creative. The reader can tell that this team went through alot of trouble to re-create the furnishings and accessories. A well thought-out book!
(As you can tell, I'm a Farris/Himsel fan!).
Best Cottage Style Book Ever.......2007-04-08
I loved this book. Most books and articles about cottage style are vague, never going into detail. This book not only explains how cottage style came about, but also breaks cottage style down into the elements of the style. I read it cover to cover, and now have a better understanding of what cottage style is. I more confident to make personal choices for my home, and still maintain the cottage feel, I want it to have. The rooms pictured in the book are classic cottage. I am very inspired by them, for rooms in my own home. Also, For the crafty person, that would like to make a personal piece for their cottage home, this books' Project section, has some great ideas and projects Anyone can do.
Full of ideas and inspiration.......2003-05-13
I find that do-it-yourself decorating is more about finding ideas and inspiration than having somebody tell me exactly how to pull it off. Although there is a good deal of instruction in this book, I love it for for Jerri Farris' casual writing style and awesome "cottage style" room photos. The projects in this book are so unique and, although I haven't had the chance to do them yet, appear pretty simple. I'm especially anxious to try the "Teapot Lamp" project for my living room (page 111).
Cottage Projects.......2003-03-09
I am a huge country and cottage decorating book collector, and I have to say this is one of my least favorite of them. There are a few really nice pictures of cottage rooms to inspire you, but mostly the book is filled with cutsie cottage type projects to do, such as making a bench, and clocks. I prefer books with lots of pictures that I can pick things out of the room that I think are beautiful and worth recreating in my home. I also prefer to find these things at flea markets and antique stores, not make obviously homemade reproductions of them.

Super Suite.......2006-02-14
This is a really fun book, loads and loads of adorable ideas for preadolescent and postadolescent girls (of all ages!). It was fun to read, look at, and it was also fun to do the projects. Go Mark!!
Super Suite is Super Sweet.......2005-09-10
I actually disagree with some of the reviews. I don't want to buy a book and copy everything project for project in the book. I like taking different ideas from different rooms and making it my own. This book showed me tons of projects to make and ways to make my room look amazing. I loved it and would recommend it to anyone interested in teen decor.
Vague..............2005-04-25
This book is very vague. I liked some points of it but it barely gives any explanation at all. Sure, it shows you how to do most of the things in there, but it doesn't tell you how to convert those ideas into larger rooms. I, personally, have a larger room than most of the rooms in this book. I don't know how this got published, but I guess it did. Also, it doesn't even have any help at picking what's right for you. I've heard of some books having quizzes in the front but this book has nothing. Zero. It does have one good point though- it shows how to actually make the things they show you. That's the only good thing though. Ugh.
Lots of great ideas!.......2004-10-25
I was a little hesitant when buying this book, since it seemed like there were a lot of ultra-girly things (there IS a ton of pink!) But I was really pleased when I started flipping through the pages. Even though there are ideas that aren't my style, with a little creativity anyone can adapt Mark's outlook to fit their own taste. For example: I was inspired by his "Desert Caravan" room, however, I couldn't live with orange. I took the basic design of the wall treatmant and applied it to my bedroom, substituting 3 beautiful shades of turquoise for the orange. It looks so much better now, and I can't believe I actually pulled it off!
Other people might take one look at the book and return it to its shelf - they may think the rooms are too extravagant or over-the-top for their taste. But just because Mark gave these girls' rooms complete makeovers doesn't mean you have to invest tons of money and effort recreating the entire room! Picking out a couple accents and/or concepts can breathe new life into an old space. And there ARE many cheap and simple ways to do that.
So if you're like me, you might have to work at convincing your mom or dad to let you brighten up your bedroom, but it'll be well worth it. A lot of ideas are all about refurnishing - reusing old pieces to create a brand-new look. Even if you're not creative, this book can give you tons of ideas on where to start.
The reason why I gave Super Suite 4 stars instead of 5 is because it won't cater to everyone's tastes, but that is a very difficult thing to do. But whether your style is wild, girly, funky, romantic, elegant, or modern..... you'll like at least one thing in this book!
Wow wow wow!.......2004-07-18
Just got Super Suite for my birthday and I love it. There are so many ideas in this book, it was hard to decide where to start. I noticed some of the other reviews and they are wrong. This is the only good book out there for teen decor. Most books I have seen are boring BORING. This one was really fun and colorful and inspirational. I would tell any teenager to get this book for sure.

Book Description
Much of today's most exuberant, most creative, and most telling imagery can be found in the street. A public art gallery of visual icons, each city hosts permanent collections and temporary exhibits, each country reflects its own much-loved identity. Cuba has a unique place in the world's street galleries, where its colonial past and the revolution have created something vibrantly distinct. Che Guevara is a popular presence, but beyond the ideology the streets provide a venue to enjoy pre-Revolution enamel Coke signs, Crystal beer and Cohiba cigar billboards, the imagery of the Buena Vista Social Club, and a nostalgic look at the chromium trim and high tail fins of 1950s automobiles. This book captures it all in an evocative medley of impressions for visitorsand would-be visitorsto Cuba and an inspirational resource for designers everywhere. 214 color photographs.

A Bit repetitious.......2006-10-26
This was one of the weaker entries in the U. of Mississippi series of interviews with filmmakers. Although there are a couple brief interviews from the Forties, the glory years for Powell, most of these interviews come from after "Peeping Tom" was savaged by the British critics. Sadly, as the book makes clear, Powell seemed to think that "Peeping Tom" was his grave and he was content to lie in it. The same questions usually elicit the same answers.
However, there is some good stuff. There are two interviews with French critics from the Sixties in which they try to classify Powell as a horror director, and he rejects this classification. Also, there is an interview by William K. Everson that inspires Powell to go beyond the usual pat answers. You can tell Powell respects Everson.
So there is good stuff here. However, if you have read Powell's two volume autobiography, this book might be superfluous.
Some Fascinating Material.......2005-03-07
David Lazar is some kind of Renaissance man all his own--his other books include CONVERSATIONS WITH MFK FISHER. Fisher is a talent of such a different sort than Michael Powell's that all we can say about David Lazar's taste is the word, "eclectic."
Lazar reprints (and in some cases prints for the first time) some great interviews of Powell, who's always sparkling and seems to be on in the great tradition of Peter ustinov (i.e., a born interviewee). The brilliant film director Oliver Assayas asks perhaps the most probing questions, whereas Martin Scorcese, who is a special guest star in one of the interviews, doesn't really seem like much of an intellectual, does he--he lobs off all the questions and continually defers to Powell as the one with the brains.
The only trouble with these 13 interviews is the amount of repetition, from questions that Powell has answered many times. It's interesting to find out that John Sweet, the American serviceman who plays basically himself in A CANTERBURY TALE, never made another film but went back to his home town in the states, entered the business world, and years later showed up at a tribute to Pressburger and Powell with his family in tow, a happy man. But then when you hear much the same story again, you lose interest fast. Ditto with the repetitions of the same answers about knowing Hitchcock, Winston Churchill, etc.
And what about the condescending way he refers to CHINATOWN as a studio movie unworthy of the genius of Polanski? Clearly he hated CHINATOWN and he certainly minces no words about NEW YORK, NEW YORK ("horrible film with Liza").
