I absolutely loved this book. I would have to say it is one of my top 5 favorites. I've read it over and over again, I have 2 copies... one is always in my purse (just in case I need something to read!) and I have lended the other to many friends and they have loved it as well.
I love it because it has a story to fit every mood. Hope you love it too!

This is the best collection of contemporary American fiction, period. Every story is great, and Wolff included a few authors I'd never heard of before but whose stories were great and whose collections I'm now reading. Wolff knows how to choose a great story. This book is a keeper.

I can't heap enough praise on 80 percent of the stories in this collection. They were variously beautiful, touching, haunting, riveting, warming...it makes me run out of adjectives. They covered me in short story love.
The next 15 percent were excellently written but didn't enchant.
Only 5 percent made me raise my eyebrows and mutter.
Read this book. You'll feel wiser to the human condition, when you throw a party beautiful people will start conversations with you when they see it on your bookshelf, and most importantly, you'll feel wiser to the human condition.
Serious literature with grit.......2001-03-18
"The Vintage Book of Contemporary American Short Stories" speaks with the intensity of liquor and fists. It lets loose on the gut of America.
Tobias Wolff, one of America's hardest hitting fiction writers, ("The Night in Question: Stories" and "In the Garden of North American Martyrs") has hammered together one of the best collections of modern fiction--far better than any individual "Best of..." collection.
If you are drawn, like me, to the intensity and disillusionment present in American literature at the turn of the century (i.e. Edith Wharton, Ernest Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald) this book may be what you have been looking for in contemporary writers. Including such staples of the contemporary cannon as Raymond Carver, Andre Dubuse, Amy Tan, Joyce Carol Oates this book packs in the best of modern short fiction and restores the genre to its former revered status.

Tobias Wollf, himself an excellent practitioner of the short story, does not include a work of his own in this wonderful collection (save a very thoughtful introduction). This is one of the most well edited collections of contemporary short stories on the market. It may be a few years old by now, but most of the "must read" writers, as well as surprisingly good lesser-knowns are included. Raymond Carver and Andre Dubus, sadly no longer contemporary in the strict sense, live on within these pages alongside excellent new voices. Two stories that really stand out for me are John L'Heureux's "Departures," a very deep and moving narrative, and Ralph Lombreglia's "Men Under Water," a beautiful alchemy of the dreams and realities of contemporary life. The selections written by Jamaica Kincaid, Joyce Carol Oates, Tim O'Brien, and Denis Johnson are so well picked, they seem to capture a bit of the authors themselves, as well as a portion of their writing. Because of these atttributes, I think the Vintage Book of Contempory Short Stories is both valuable for personal collections and for use in the classroom. It does the job that all compilations are supposed to, but seldom do, accomplish. It exemplifies the current breadth and depth of this contemporary artform.

I read this last night and finished this morning before starting my day. There was excitment throughout this book as well as a really endearing story of a family's disfunction yet the love of a father that weaves throughout time the love he really held for his youngest son.
It was neat having Bailee and Carter's family involved. I would like to have read more about Sarah and her family.
I hope there is a book about Dr. Timothy and the old maid in the works that will blend Sarah, Lacey, and Bailee's families into its storyline.

LOVED THIS BOOK i thought this was a good ending to the trilogy, Lucy and the Captain were great together, took some time for them to get really really physical but understandable if you meet your husband once in 5 years but worth the chemistry in the end. The other characters are just fun to read and of course the humor is always good the 3 books within the series was my first JODI THOMAS read and won't be my last..

I love Jodi Thomas and after reading the first two i had to get the third. It was excellent. She did not disappoint. I was reintroduced to characters from the past two books and it brought a great conclusion to this trilogy.

No one writes westerns like this author. And this book has the wonderful, stud hero, witty dialogue and all the makings of another great book. Unfortunately, I thought the heroine was a bit too naive and too goody too shoes. Storyline was a bit different and again, the dialogue is adorable and fun.Your call.

This is the 3rd book in this series & it follows Lacy & Walker. I found that I liked Lacy far better then I did Sarah from the last book & Walker was a great match for her. This was a great ending to this series & it was fun re-vising some of the previous chrachters. I do have to agree with another reviewer who said that the romance took too long to devolop. This has happened in all 3 of these books but then again how can you marry a stranger & then just jump right into the bed? You need time to get to know one another.
For those of you who have been hoping for a story about the ranger & Two Bits (Nell) I've read off of Jodi's website that she is writing a story about them. It's going to be called The Texan's Reward. She states that she's finishing it up so hopefully we will see it soon.

This is a wonderful beginning chapter book for 1st-2nd Graders. It is a perfect level for children who are beginning to read chapter books on there own. The topic is interesting: Aliens, Saving the world. It is funny ,too. My 1st grader LOVES it! There are 2 more: Aliens for Lunch, and Aliens for Dinner.

Aliens for Breakfast is about a kid named Richard. He has to save the day because a little alien comes to him and tells him that Dorf is going to take over the world. The first thing that people need to realize when they read material like this is this is a testimony of what God has done for someone else that can help someone else in ways that only that person can describe.
Second, Hammond's approach is necessary in these times. Too many women, men and children get caught up in the Hollywood lifestyles and "reality" television. But, what's going on in your life? Where can you seek true guidance? All of the women...Divas...Hammond chose were from the Good Book and of all walks of life. It's something in this book for every woman...big, small, successful, struggling...all women.
Third, you're going to get what you pay for. Each woman that is talked about are an inspiration and there are tips and guides for how to see and be encouraged to embrace the victory(ies) being described.
Fourth, it's really a "help yourself" book, so....HELP YOURSELF! Be Blessed.

The book contains some valueable information about how deal with life but it is written so poorly, its hard to get through the book. It is written somewhat like a bad account of a conversation with the author.

Although I have only tried 3 of his stew recipes so far, plus a biscuit recipe, I can't wait to try the rest. His short ribs for example, are wonderfully ungreasy because you take them out of the cooking liquid and finish them in another pan. Some of the other recipes look like they may require a little too much butter or oil - like the chicken fricassee, but the flavors are great. Most of his vegetable recipes seem a little skimpy for dinner, they're more like side dishes, which is too bad. I wish he had included more information about the different stew words he uses - what is a burgoo? But now I know what a bog is - and it sounds delicious.

There is entirely too much of the book on tools and how to use them. I already know how to use the tools but I do need more info. on forming metal. I can get a free Sears tool catalog and have tools. I do not feel that it was worth the $12.95+ shipping. I was looking for the "techniques" on how to do the bending, forming, etc. It did not meet my need or expectations.

Many of the greatest artists since Dürer and Rembrandt have used the print medium to explore some of their most important ideas. Paula Rego is in this tradition, giving full rein to her imagination in both etching and lithography, and using the media with exuberance to create work that is as disturbing, erotic, and powerful as her paintings. This monograph discusses and illustrates all Rego's prints, including unpublished work—over 200 etchings and lithographs spanning half a century from 1954 to 2003.
Many of her prints are based on themes; as she says, one image triggers the idea for the next. Among these are Rego's Nursery Rhymes, which reveal a darkly humorous take on the difficulties of childhood and provide a rich seam for her precocious girls and individually characterized animals. The narrative layers and emotional nuances of her work are vividly shown in her Peter Pan series of 1992, and also in Pendle Witches, for which she collaborated closely with the poet and writer Blake Morrison, who in turn was inspired by her series The Children's Crusade. The book concludes with her most recent portfolio of lithographs, based more or less loosely on Jane Eyre. 491 illustrations in color and tritone.

In earlier oral histories such as Working, The Good War, and Hard Times, Studs Terkel showed a virtuoso talent for absorbing the small talk of regular Joes and Janes and turning it into a literary cross-hatch--Robert Browning and Herodotus, Margaret Mead and Steinbeck. It turns out all this was prologue. In The Spectator, Terkel reveals that if he loved the waitresses and hockey players of earlier books, it wasn't in "the way, nor to the same degree, as those in the world of the lively arts." You can tell, reading this book. The Terkel touch is all here, but in 50-plus interviews with the likes of Buster Keaton and Marlon Brando, James Cagney, Simone Signoret, Jacques Tati, and (weirdly) Arnold Schwarzenegger, it's Studs's range that astonishes. He has textured memories of remote stage productions of Arthur Miller's plays--which you might expect. But when he remembers Kanchenjungha with the Indian filmmaker Satyajit Ray, Ray laughs out loud: "Where did you see that?" There are lovely little fender benders, too: in a basement apartment in Paris in 1963, Simone Signoret extravagantly praises Françoise Rosay and Agnes de Mille, characters we know from earlier chapters--de Mille especially. A choreographer who brought ballet to Broadway musicals, she explains that African rhythms and English clog dancing married to beget tap; with a shift from up to down beat, she says, "syncopation and jazz were born." Celebrate The Arts, Guided By A Master.......2000-01-08
Any reading of this book must be deeply personal. For me, tears often came in reaction to the sheer beauty of thoughts and deeds expressed by Studs Terkel and his interviewees. Hopefully the book will spark a theatre renaissance. No matter how large your village, town, or city, there is a need for a theatre of the people. Models described in the book can spur you into activity. Highlights of more than 55 interviews are given! My favorites: those with Arthur Miller, Ruth Gordon, Jonathon Miller, Moms Mabley, Uta Hagen, Edward Albee, and Eugene Ionesco. You will be compelled to share the book, possibly by reading aloud in turn with a companion.
