Book Description

A dramatic and thought-provoking novel of one family's triumph in the face of the hardships and challenges of the post-Civil War South.

The Wake of the Wind, J. California Cooper's third novel, is her most penetrating look yet at the challenges that generations of African Americans have had to overcome in order to carve out a home for themselves and their families. Set in Texas in the waning years of the Civil War, the novel tells the dramatic story of a remarkable heroine, Lifee, and her husband, Mor. When Emancipation finally comes to Texas, Mor, Lifee, and the extended family they create from other slaves who are also looking for a home and a future, set out in search of a piece of land they can call their own. In the face of constant threats, they manage not only to survive but to succeed--their crops grow, their children thrive, they educate themselves and others. Lifee and Mor pass their intelligence, determination, and talents along to their children, the next generation to surge forward. At once tragic and triumphant, this is an epic story that captures with extraordinary authenticity the most important struggle of the last hundred years.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2007-06-13

After hearing good things about J. California Cooper, I decided that I would read Wake of the Wind as an introduction to what I thought was a talented writer. I was wrong. Although the beginning of the novel is engaging when it comes to story telling, I found it lacking in other areas. There were too many grammatical errors and problems with syntax that were so blatent it was almost laughable to think it was edited and published; they were not only annoying but amateur. And that is how I would describe this story -- annoying and amateur. The premise of the novel was what gripped me -- the only reason I'm giving two stars. Reading a different type of slavery story (one that seemed less daunting and almost triumphant) was something that appealed to me but after page 193, I felt like the author was losing steam that she never had to begin with. I put the book down and forgot all about it.
I found it difficult to form attachments with the one-dimensional, repetitive characters. And as for the story itself -- its almost TOO perfect. Situations end up almost TOO ideal for this place and time. It was simply unrealistic in my opinion. I didn't finish the book but I'm certain that I'm not missing much. Unfortunately, J. California Cooper has blown it BIG TIME. I will NOT pick up another one of her books because this one was such a turn-off. First impressions are everything. And this wasn't a good one.

I've read every book written (I think) by JC Cooper...she's my most favorite....I can buy her books without any hype because she's going to straight tell me a story....
This was a story that I might not have wanted to hear, but needed too...I think every young person of color, in this day and age needs to read this...because somewhere along the line the values that were instilled here are lost...maybe they're in the "wake"....
I gave this one 5 stars because there weren't 6 to give....

This book was an awesome read!!! I hope I can be as inspirational with the living of my life and words that I hope to publish one day. Thank you J. California Cooper!

5 out of 5 stars You finally got me!.......2006-10-15

I've never been a fan of J. California Cooper due to her use of incest as subject matter in her earlier fictional works. I was forced to read this book as it was the selection of my book club. I waited until a week before the meeting to finally start reading. I could not put this book down. I loved it. I loved her prose and the historical references and I loved the lessons this book taught me. Finally, it helped me to better understand the strength of my forebears and I came away being very, very proud that I am a descendant of slaves. Bravo, Ms. J. California Cooper. You've got another fan. Me!

4 out of 5 stars Bad writing, good book.......2006-07-01

I had very mixed feelings about "Wake of the Wind." I was disappointed in the writing, which had no poetry about it, and might have put the book down were it not such a quick read. The characterization also was weak, very black and white (pun partly intended...). But the book did a great job of really bringing to life the actualities of life for freed slaves, especially immediately after the Civil War. If I could, I'd give it 3.5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Read.......2006-10-20

Wonderful story!! A hero who falls in love with a young girl's enthusiasm and vitality and waits to have her until she comes of age! The hero was "heroic," but the heroine was such a wonderfully strong and vibrant character. I hate it when the heroine is a simpering miss who waits around for the hero to rescue her. It was very refreshing to see her take matters into her own hands. I kept imagining women from countries like Iraq or Iran might be going through similar plights -- strong women fighting to change the way they are treated in those countries. The heroine was very inspiring and the hero was heroic because he was willing to forgo long standing traditions of his kinsmen's treatment of their women. The storyline was great, the romance was great! A definite keeper!

5 out of 5 stars Desert passion.......2004-06-20

This is a well-written romance with likeable, strong-willed, and heroic characters. For those who have read Johansen's other books set in Sedikhan, this is the story of Galen Ben Rashid and Tess Rubinoff - who start off the dynasty. The novel transports you in time and place.

1 out of 5 stars Not my kind..........2003-05-14

No, not my type of book. I really hate to put this review on here with all the other wonderful reviews about it! lol; however, I guess people do need to hear from those of us that have differing opinions. I really thought I'd like it after reading IJ's 'A Magnificent Rogue' - but I was wrong. It was very slow reading & I was having a hard time staying in it then the heroine started acting extremely stupid & the hero turned into an a real jerk. I suppose I would have to say that due to his raising, he might have actually come a long way in life, but I still couldn't enjoy either the hero or the heroine. So... I can't say I'd recommend this one.

5 out of 5 stars Splendid !.......2000-05-26

I just re-read "The Golden Barbarian" and remembered how endearing this book really is. It's one of my favorite books by Iris Johansen. The setting was fascinating, and the plot never bogged down. The lead characters, Tess and Galen, began the book as sympathetic and likeable and ended the book as loveable people with depth and richness of emotional response. Galen is a sexy hero who actually does heroic things (imagine that)! Tess is intelligent, strong and never petty. The utter lack of stupidity exhibited by the couple is such a refreshing change from so many romances. The secondary characters are well-drawn, and I'd love to see a sequel concerning Tess's cousin who will play a pivotal role in Tamrovia in the future.

A very good book from an excellent author.

    Book Description

Philip K. Dick was a master of science fiction, but he was also a writer whose work transcended genre to examine the nature of reality and what it means to be human. A writer of great complexity and subtle humor, his work belongs on the shelf of great twentieth-century literature, next to Kafka and Vonnegut. Collected here are twenty-one of Dick's most dazzling and resonant stories, which span his entire career and show a world-class writer working at the peak of his powers.

In "The Days of Perky Pat," people spend their time playing with dolls who manage to live an idyllic life no longer available to the Earth's real inhabitants. "Adjustment Team" looks at the fate of a man who by mistake has stepped out of his own time. In "Autofac," one community must battle benign machines to take back control of their lives. And in "I Hope I Shall Arrive Soon," we follow the story of one man whose very reality may be nothing more than a nightmare. The collection also includes such classic stories as "The Minority Report," the basis for the Steven Spielberg movie, and "We Can Remember It for You Wholesale," the basis for the film Total Recall. Selected Stories of Philip K. Dick is a magnificent distillation of one of American literature's most searching imaginations.

    Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars A very good selection of Dick's essential stories although some classics are missing..........2007-04-17

Philip K. Dick has become the most filmed author in science fiction. That's a mixed blessing. The films made from his novels vary from flawed but great ("Blade Runner", "Minority Report") to fun dreck that wastes the potential of the story ("Paycheck"). First time fans will discover some great, unusual stories with a unique wit, touch of irony and fierce intelligence that rivals the late Kurt Vonnegut (a fellow traveler with his use of disjointed narratives and the use of irony in science fiction).

As with a couple of other reviewers here, I'd suggest skipping "Roog". Many of the stories included here were later made into films but skip those first. Go for the gothic science fiction story "Upon the Dull Earth" a gem that even I hadn't seen and I've been a fan of Dick's since 1969. Then dig into some of his less familiar but no less trippy (and powerful) stories such as "I Hope I Will Arrive Soon" and "The Days of Perky Pat".

This is a very good collection for first time readers of Dick and, quite honestly, despite his talent he was churning out stories at a furious pace to make ends meet so not all of his novels and short stories are great but those that are continue to be outstanding. Dick was a novelist and writer first and foremost. The fact that he was consigned to the literary ghetto of "science fiction" is a shame because it suggested that he was writing just pulp fiction that others wouldn't appreciate. That's just not the case. At his best he could be dazzling, at his worst he could be merely entertaining but always interesting.

We get the following stories classic stories: "The Days of Perky Pat", "Autofac", "Upon the Dull Earth", "We Can Remember It For You Wholesale", "The Electric Ant", "A Little Something for Us Tempunauts", "The Exit Door Leads In", "I Hope I Shall Arrive Soon""The Minority Report", "Second Variety" (adapted into the film "Screamers"), "Imposter" (adapted into the film of the same name)and "Precious Artifact". The other stories in the collection vary from quite good to OK ("Roog" an early story that hints at his possibilities as a writer).

I'd suggest the following novels as well--Ubik, The Transmigration of Timothy Archer (a non-sf novel), Confessions of a Crap Artist (another non-sf novel), Flow My Tears the Policeman Said, A Scanner Darkly, The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldrich and The Unteleported Man as a good place to start with Dick outside of his short stories. This is a solid collection of classic Dick stories with just a few duds. 3 1/2 stars.

5 out of 5 stars After Fifty Years.......2007-02-23

Most of us who lived in Philip K. Dick's era remember all too well the angst of nuclear holocaust and all the "what ifs" that accompanied these. The author manages to incorporate the fears and projections of his and my era and distill all in a remarkable collection of short stories. Of these stories two stand out: "The Days of Perky Pat" and "Precious Artifact." For those of us who remember the original Barbie Doll, "The Days of Perky Pat" is the Barbie Doll syndrome with an ironic twist; it is the adults who spent their days in an elaborate post holocaust role playing world. "Precious Artifact" rivals Rod Serling's best in its construction of an artificial world. Like the engineer, I prefer my cats to be alive, but perhaps this gives too much away. For all who enjoy the Beat Generation with a double jigger of science fiction Philip K. Dick stands out.

3 out of 5 stars PKD Hit Or Miss..........2005-03-10

On many levels PKD is a terrible writer. But as an ideas man, few of us could do better than his distopian every-man glimpses into the future. This collection of short stories illustrates his weaknesses as well as his strengths. Some of these tales are familiar to Science Fiction Movie fans: Dick's short story version of Paycheck is notoriously hollow and undramatic. I long ago learned to avoid the ramblings of the editors of such compilations, but having peeked at the preface was not surprised to find it to be the kind of breathless and unrepentantly obsequious fawnings you'd expect from anyone who refuses to write the words "Science Fiction" and instead tosses the "SF" moniker around as often as possible in order to sound avant-garde.

The short is: You've gotta read the short stories in order to really understand Philip K. Dick... and this is as good a survey as any.

    Book Description

Rich with storytelling, history, and folklore, The Lakota Way expresses the heart of Native American philosophy and imparts the path to a fulfilling and meaningful life. Joseph Marshall is a member of the Sicunga Lakota Sioux and has dedicated his entire life to the wisdom he learned from his elders. Here he focuses on the twelve core qualities that are crucial to the Lakota way of living-bravery, fortitude, generosity, wisdom, respect, honor, perseverance, love, humility, sacrifice, truth, and compassion. Whether teaching a lesson on respect imparted by the mythical Deer Woman or the humility embodied by the legendary Lakota leader Crazy Horse, The Lakota Way offers a fresh outlook on spirituality and ethical living.

    5 out of 5 stars pleasant surprise.......2007-09-26

I bought this book at a store in Oklahoma City and it was wrapped in packaging. I had already read three of Marshall's books but when I unwrapped it after buying it, my first reaction was it was a mistake to buy it. It was not what I was expecting. Much to my pleasant surprise, I thoroughly enjoyed Marshall's story telling.

I highly recommend anything he writes. I am currently reading his book on Crazy Horse and it is excellent. His book, "Walking with Grandfather" is outstanding.

Marshall is certainly one of the Elders of his tradition and is an accomplished writer and historian. His works are a must read.

    5 out of 5 stars Worth Sharing.......2007-08-25

This book can change you if you are open to it. It made me rethink a few assumptions I had about myself. I think all of us know the dictionary definition of virtues such as generosity and wisdom, but Marshall shares stories and personal insights that teach how to weave those qualities into the fabric of your life. This book is warm-hearted and inspiring. Its organization is well suited for discussion groups. The Lakota Way should be the way of our leaders, neighbors, family members and our hearts.

    5 out of 5 stars Re-Read this book.......2006-06-28

The wealth of virtues discussed in this book through the legends of the Lakota tribe are presented in a way that is both entertaining and thought-provoking. A wonderful book that is enjoyable to read, and educational as well. This book now sits on my top shelf, with the few other books that I re-read regularly. This is a place of honor, and speaks to the greatness of Mr. Joseph M. Marshall's explanation of the traditional legends, and their connection to modern life. You don't have to be a Native American to enjoy this book. Read it, and re-read it. See how your personality and character develops into something you never would have imagined!

    Amazon.com's Best of 2001

To the Lakota Indians, virtues such as humility, sacrifice, and bravery are not just distant goals to aspire toward, they are daily expectations. "We believe we are measured by how well, or how little, we manifest virtue in our life's journey," writes Joseph Marshall, himself a Lakota. This collection of stories illustrates how generations are taught the Lakota Way of virtuous living through oral storytelling. Marshall recounts the tale of Deer Woman--a siren that lures hunters to her teepee then steals their souls. As the story goes, a grandmother warns her grandson not to be trapped by this beautiful soul-snatcher. When the grandson finally encounters Deer Woman, he is able to resist her seduction, not because he is afraid she'll steal his soul, but because he would never disobey his grandmother. For the Lakota, respect for elders is one of the most honored virtues. After each story, Marshall offers a gracefully rendered essay on the virtue it espouses and how it's applied to daily life. We are fortunate that Marshall translated these precious stories into written English. "They are our gift to the world," he explains. "They are not guarded secrets, they are markers on the road to life--the answers soaring across the open prairies of our lives on the winds of wisdom--helping us, perhaps helping you." --Gail Hudson

    Book Description

Joseph Marshall has dedicated his entire life to spiritual fulfillment and teaching to others the essence of the Lakota wisdom. As a child, he learned from his grandfather: "Insults can hurt, but only if you let them. If you learn to let the wind blow through you, you will take away its power to blow you down. If you let the words pass through you, you will not feel them." In The Lakota Way, he imparts this lesson his grandfather gave him as well as many others. It combines his own poetic voice with rich storytelling, Native American folklore, history, and lessons to give a fresh outlook for those searching for a new perspective on spirituality and ethical living.

In The Lakota Way, Joe Marshall expresses the heart of Native American philosophy and the qualities that are crucial to the Lakota path to a fulfilling and meaningful life: bravery, fortitude, generosity, wisdom, respect, honor, selflessness, perseverance, love, humility, sacrifice, truth, and compassion. The wisdom is shared through stories at the heart of Lakota culture—and its survival—and their meaning and relevance are explained through examples from history and everyday life. The legend of Crazy Horse illuminates a lesson on humility, and the legend of Deer Woman teaches a lesson on respect. The Lakota Way is the perfect handbook of life and ethics for the entire family.

5 out of 5 stars Life Changing Book.......2005-06-27

This was the best book I have read in almost 10 years. Joseph Marshall presents human virtues, that I would hope we would all strive to achieve, with examples of historical events, life experience, and cultural stories and legends. This presentation makes it so easy to relate to. It is as if a grandfather you look up to is trying to teach you how to live life a an honest, integral person. I personally think it should be a required read for school student, because unfortunately, too many growing people seem to be missing these lessons, and perpetuating horrible behavior. Great Book!

Marshall's Lakota Way is a wonderful book that I found to conatin bits of wisdom that can benefit all of us, no matter who you are or where you live. Book Description

For the uninitiated, sushi restaurants can be intimidating. But no more. Just like its irresistible predecessor Dim Sum, Sushi can be tucked into a purse or pocket for instant-expert reference. Fifty of the most popular sushi items are presented as colorfully as a Japanese restaurant's display case with clear photographs for easy identification, descriptions of flavors and textures, and phonetic pronunciations. Icons distinguish whether sushi is cooked (like unagi) or is vegetarian (like the cucumber roll). Covering nigiri, maki, and a few unusual sushi items (blowfish, anyone?), Japanese foodophiles can take it easy by ordering the crowd-pleasing California Roll, or go for broke and sample uni (sea urchin), an acquired taste, but a favorite of any sushi-lover worth their tobiko. With a short history of sushi, ordering and eating etiquette, and a simple glossary of out-of-the-ordinary ingredients, Sushi is the definitive guide to one of Japan's most intriguing culinary specialties. Itadakimasu! (enjoy).

5 out of 5 stars the best so far...........2006-03-21

Why is it so hard to find a good sushi book? I first came across this gem in a novelty shop and to my surprise, fell in love. This book is a graphic designers dream and will apeal such people as much as to raw fish eaters. This pocket guide is a museum piece and a must for any book collector. I was a bit put-off by its tiny size but some would argue it adds to its charm.

      3 out of 5 stars A good primer but...........2005-05-13

I got this book based on a recommendation from the Washington Post. It's small (actual pocket size) and sturdy. I found it a bit hard to open all the way. The first 20 pages or so list sushi etiquette and tells what is happening behind the sushi bar. The next 50 pages is the part of the book that let me down the most. There is only one piece of sushi per page with a picture, the japanese spelling and pronounciation, the 'dumbed down' definition, and a brief description. The book also mentions if the piece is vegetarian or if it has been cooked.
It covers most of the sushi that I have had in my lifetime (I'm fairly adventurous) and not too much else. I think the book could have been made less than an inch bigger so that two pieces could fit on a page.
It's a pretty good book, but I think it could have been more in depth. If you don't know anything about sushi, it's a good start. I think if you've been to the sushi bar half a dozen times, then you probably won't get too much use of it.

3 out of 5 stars Gorgeous, but not what I was after.......2003-01-28

Ive loved the work of syd mead ever since I first saw the movie blade runner. Since then I knew I wanted to be a concept artist. So I figured, what better way of becoming one, than studying the art of the masters? Hence, I bought this book.

Only giving this book 3 starts feels kinda sad, since the works are gorgeous and the concepts, amazing! nevertheless... I was searching for rougher material... less color, more testy stuff. For you who want to be inspired as a concept artist, as I did, buy some "the art of starwars" books instead, they rule. On the other hand, if youre just lookin for a bunch of pretty work. BUY THIS.

5 out of 5 stars Phenomenal views of future possibilities!.......1998-05-07

I recently got this book, and absolutely loved it. If you're of a futurist bent, and thirst for views of how things *might* be, then this is a book for you.

The illustrations are lavish, and the explanations of the design concepts behind the art give you a better idea of some of the planning that has gone into the picture, as well as possible avenues for future construction technologies.

I'm hooked. I have another book on order, and am saving up for other books of his. (He also has a mailing list. I got details in a flyer tucked into my copy of this book...)

5 out of 5 stars A must-have for industial design students and illustrators.......1997-12-18

Syd Mead sometimes calls himself a "futureist" and his credits in the sci-fi classic Blade Runner read "Visual Specialist". This is an amazing collection of Syd Mead's visual art of the future and is not only beautiful to look at but is an intelligent view of future machinary and cuture.
