Book Description
In this daring and provocative literary parody which has captured the interest and imagination of a nation, Alice Randall explodes the world created in GONE WITH THE WIND, a work that more than any other has defined our image of the antebellum South. Taking sharp aim at the romanticized, whitewashed mythology perpetrated by this southern classic, Randall has ingeniously conceived a multilayered, emotionally complex tale of her own - that of Cynara, the mulatto half-sister, who, beautiful and brown and born into slavery, manages to break away from the damaging world of the Old South to emerge into full life as a daughter, a lover, a mother, a victor. THE WIND DONE GONE is a passionate love story, a wrenching portrait of a tangled mother-daughter relationship, and a book that "celebrates a people's emancipation not only from bondage but also from history and myth, custom and stereotype" (San Antonio Express-News).

Clever thoughts hidden in muddled plot.......2007-09-22
I had the chance to read a bootlegged copy of this while it had been pulled by the angry relatives of Margaret Mitchell. Not at all a fan of GWTW and having no emotional investment in a sequel, I found the plot to be downright preposterous, mostly for the shenanigans with Rhett Butler.
I have read the criticisms that the book is wildly inaccurate because the slaves' view that they have a hand in all the plantation events cannot possibly be so. I think this misses the point: this is their perspective, and they perceive, or pretend to believe, that they have monumental impact on the plantation.
There is another interesting aspect of this book that makes the reading worthwhile: namely, the author's meditation on the meaning of motherhood, particularly in the racially charged atmosphere of the slavery-era south. The notion of the black "Mammy" charged with raising a white child is one that receives some consideration, although not enough. But what about the white mother (master's wife)? How does she feel? And what about the enslaved child of the Mammy, who is pushed aside in favor of the slave owner's child? What is their view?
Randall's treatment of this subject is thoughtful and interesting. The rest of the book, unfortunately, is not.
Won't the wind ever go?.......2007-07-03
When I heard of this book for the first time just a few days ago I couldn't wait to get ahold of it. Sadly, it's one of the worst things I've ever tried to read. How can one "repair" or "correct" another's fiction? The impersonal narrator of GWTW told us everything we needed to know about the families involved and now the first person narrator of TWDG tells us it's all false. Ashley is gay and in love with a dead slave boy, Melanie didn't die from a miscarriage but in child birth and her child survived (when she was so newly pregnant that it didn't even show? please), Prissy killed Melanie as Mammy killed the three O'Hara sons (why didn't she just kill Ellen and be done with it, since Gerald loved her so much?), and on and on. And of course she gave Tara columns. God's nightgown!
It's really past time for people to stop trying to rewrite GWTW and just tell their own stories instead. A lot of good novels tell about the Civil War from the slave's perspective and, even better, there is a lot of non-fiction on the subject as well. Black Women in White America has the benefit of being true, as well as heartbreaking, and is an excellent place to start.
While I'm sure we all appreciate Ms. Randall's desire to make the slave characters deeper and more three demensional, turning them all into scheming murderers might not have been the best way to go. It actually made me pity the poor white folks who were the unknowing pawns of their evil slaves and that's not a feeling I like. It's too much like what the white supremicists say.
If You Know Your GWTW, You Will Love This Book.......2007-04-29
When I was a teenager, I read GWTW at least 50 times. For one whole year (sophmore, junior?) I read this novel continuously. The moment I finished it, I'd start over again at the beginning.
I got to know those characters like they were my family, and pictured each in my mind fully formed. Years later I saw the movie and of course now I can't get the actors' images out of my mind, but for years I lived my own fantasy of Tara, Atlanta, and the lost world of the South.
Alice Randall has brought all of these characters back to life in a powerful way. She has created new aspects to characters I loved, and wholely new characters that fit into the pantheon of GWTW perfectly. I couldn't put this book down and read it in one weekend. If you like GWTW, you will love this book.
Could Have Done Without This One!.......2007-04-19
Being a huge fan of Gone With the Wind, I had to read this alternative account of the story. And let me tell you, it is a completely alternative account! Only a small percentage of the story seemed consistent with the characters developed in Margaret Mitchell's novel. Some parts were downright bawdy and indecent--unnecessarily, I thought. The book redeems itself a bit by shedding some light on some curious situations in GWTW...for instance, why all three of Gerald's sons died in infancy. It also explores, seemingly authentically, the psychological effects of servants raising the children born into an aristrocratic life. Other than that--skip it. I think the concept behind the book is wonderful, but could have been done MUCH better.
I'm glad I read it........2007-03-27
I actually read this book a few years ago, but only now did I finally get around to reading the autorized GWTW sequel, 1979's "Scarlett," and I thought it important to know all three before commenting. I think all three must be considered together, because together all three have powerful and important things to say about the America I live in.
That "GWTW" was an artifact of its time is a valid statement, and its inherent racism would also be easy to dismiss as an artifact of the 1930's were the not the book so enduringly popular, and so hotly defended by its white readers. Its authorized sequel, "Scarlett," attempts to address this problem, mostly by simply writing out the black characters.
I am glad this book exists. I am glad it was written and glad that the courts allowed it to be published. It has its faults--it's far less successful when it deviates from being a GWTW mirror and goes off on its own--but I am glad that the mirror does exist. TWDG opened my eyes to things I'd never thought of before (Oh. You mean, Mammy had a NAME?)and I am glad I read it.
Book Description
USA Today bestselling and Rita Award–winning author Lorraine Heath has created a lush, emotional love story.
Camilla Hutchenson, countess, sponsor, darling of the ton, has reached a staggering level of social power. But one man has managed to distract her attention from her schedule of charity endeavours and teas – and not just because he holds the deed to her estate.
The man in question, Archibald Warner, is the new Earl of Sachse. Though at first meeting he suspects his new ward of being nothing more than a social bit of fluff, the more time passes, the more he finds himself drawn to her. But there is something she is hiding from him, and she hesitates to show him her real heart, even though she wishes she could learn to trust him with it. For somehow she knows䨦 only she can give him the chance, he will teach her everything she could hope to learn about love.
Customer Reviews:
Very satisfying!.......2006-12-19
Anyone familiar with Lorraine Heath's novels will recognize a big difference in "As an Earl Desires" -- neither our hero nor heroine is Texan. They're both English.
Archie is a great hero. I loved him from the start. Having recently been informed that he is the new earl, he goes to London and does NOT have the best time of his life. He's a schoolteacher from a small town in northern England, not a wealthy carefree rake. To help ease him into the aristocratic circles in which he now finds himself, Lady Sachse -- his predecessor's widow -- comes forward. They develop a friendship that -- yes, of course -- leads to romance. But the journey from this point to the inevitable end is a very satisfying one, and I recommend it. No -- this isn't "war and peace", but who wants to read "war and peace"? If you want to immerse yourself in the lives of two people -- one wounded and the other sensitive, loving, and willing to help -- then read "As an Earl Desires." There's a twist or two for you to smile at, and also sets up perfectly the next book in the series, "Promise me Forever." Two thumbs up to Lorraine Heath!
Lovely romance........2006-10-15
It took me nearly two months to start reading this book. Which never happens; simply because the story of Camilla was much harder to start? After reading "Love with a Scandalous Lord" in which Camilla had been portrayed as such a negative character I was reluctant to read about her redemption. However, I was pleasantly surprised. The love story is lovely; the chemistry between Archie and Camilla is superb. And her redemption finally earns her forgiveness. It was a real treat to get reacquainted with the old couples from her previews books.
As an Earl Desires.......2006-10-07
Sooo boring. Camilla was such a materialistic, power hungry woman that I found it hard to like her. The author threw in some charitable deeds to balance things out but she came up very short. It didn't help that she accomplished these deeds with someone else's money. In contrast, Archie was just a little to perfect. He was so syrupy sweet that it made me want to gag. A little bit of conflict between the two would have been quite refreshing.
ONE OF THE BETTER HISTORICALS I'VE READ LATELY.......2005-11-23
There are so many historical writers now and many big disappointments. This was also my first historical by Heath and boy was I pleasantly surprised. I know there were valid complaints about the "barren" issue being overplayed, but a book that's this well written I can overlook it.
I did get fustrated by the heroine's self-martyr attitude especially with the barren issue, but the hero more than made up for this short coming. I absolutely adored the hero!!!!! As one of the other reviewers mentioned, the literacy issue was also so well written in this story. Overall, I really loved this book and look forward to searching for Heath's backlist.
Absolutely wonderful.......2005-11-15
I LOVED THIS BOOK!! It was a perfect love story. I extremely disagree with SusieQ's review. This book was not at all boring and it was extremely realistic. If you love historical romances, then please read this book. However, if you are not into lords, dukes, countesses, England, and all of that other stuff, then please read whatever you enjoy. Please do not read this and complain about it if you aren't into this type of book in the first place!!! This book is absolutely beautiful (as you can see SusieQ is the only one who disagrees here).

Book Description
"Fitz is a well-established scholar whose work on Lispector is highly respected, and this is a well-focused and very knowledgeable study. One of the things I particularly like about this book is that it makes a case for reading Lispector in the light of poststructuralist theory without overwhelming the reader." --Debra A. Castillo, Professor of Romance Studies and Director of Latin American Studies Program, Cornell University Driven by an unfulfilled desire for the unattainable, ultimately indefinable Other, the protagonists of the novels and stories of acclaimed Brazilian writer Clarice Lispector exemplify and humanize many of the issues central to poststructuralist thought, from the nature of language, truth, and meaning to the unstable relationships between language, being, and reality. In this book, Earl Fitz demonstrates that, in turn, poststructuralism offers important and revealing insights into all aspects of Lispector's writing, including her style, sense of structure, characters, themes, and socio-political conscience. Fitz draws on Lispector's entire oeuvre--novels, stories, crônicas, and children's literature--to argue that her writing consistently reflects the basic tenets of poststructuralist theory. He shows how Lispector's characters struggle over and humanize poststructuralist dilemmas and how their essential sense of being is deeply dependent on a shifting, and typically transgressive, sense of desire and sexuality.

Abby Benton is a tweny five year old virgin. She has always wanted to wait until her wedding night. Recently her fiancee dumped her before the wedding and now she wonders if she made the right decision to wait until marriage to have sex. So, when Abby starts working for Lord Matthew Smythe she is ready and willing to toss away her virginity. Matt is unsure about getting involved with Abby, but she is insistent, so he takes her to his home in Bermuda for 'fun in the sun' and than the real world comes calling and Matt most return to his business. Abby accepted the rules before they got romantically involved, but now that they have returned she wants all or nothing. Matt has problems with love and marriage due to his own emotional past, but he does not want to end things with Abby. Abby leaves no room to compromise, so Matt must decide what he wants.
This was an okay story. I did not get any real thrill from the plot or characters. I have read the other stories by Kathryn Jensen involving Matt's brothers and based on that I was disappointed with the 'family reunion' that took place in this story. All the brothers had strong feelings about their father, but it was glossed over and they were one big happy family at the end of this book. The story just did not ring true to me.

Book Description
This exploration of D. H. Lawrence's longer fiction marks a long overdue effort to bring the writing of a major 20th-century British author into a postmodern context. Ingersoll turns to theorists who have been influenced by psychoanalyst Jacques Lacan-- Peter Brooks, Jane Gallop, and Barbara Johnson, among others--to construct a framework for the reading of desire in narratives by Lawrence.

All in all a very good book
Different from other Silhouette books I've read.......2000-04-06
I found the plot of the king's "bodyguard" in love with the king's sister-in-law to be interesting. While trying to remain loyal to Jacob von Austerand, Thomas, his "bodyguard" is falling in love with Diane Fields, a recent divorcee from New England. He knows that to fall in love with the woman would be committing treason.... I really enjoyed this and would recommend it for those who are looking for something a little different from the norm.

A Quick and Enjoyable Read........2002-02-27
"The Earl's Secret" by Kathryn Jensen is an entertaining romance. It is a relatively light read, but it is lots of fun and is great for a couple of hours of relaxation.
When Jennifer Murphy takes a wrong turn while traveling as a tour guide in Scotland, she ends up at the private castle of sexy playboy Christopher Smythe. Christopher is originally annoyed at the intrusion of his privacy, but it doesn't take long for him to know that he wants to see a whole lot more of this pretty American woman.
Christopher, also known as the Earl of Winchester, is hiding a painful secret that tortures his soul and sends him into deep depressions. Jennifer's presence brings a ray of light into Christopher's life, and as he accompanies her and her tour group, he realizes that he doesn't want their relationship to end. But still he forces Jennifer to give up on their romance and return to the States, thinking it's best for both of them.
During the months following Jennifer's departure, Chris is haunted by memories of the brief and wonderful time he spent with her. He follows her halfway around the world and begs her to return with him. Jennifer is reluctant at first but Christopher won't take no for an answer, and they return together to Scotland. They continue their romance and are blissfully happy, until a selfless act of Jennifer's, misunderstood by Christopher, creates a rift between them that tears them apart. Will true love triumph, or will the hurt that Christopher's impulsiveness has caused keep them apart forever?
I guess you'll have to read the book to find out.
This isn't deep and thought-provoking reading, but it is highly entertaining and very enjoyable. "The Earl's Secret" is great for summer beaches or cold winter nights by the fire, when all you really want is some good, clean fun! Enjoy.
A wonderful writing style.......2001-03-05
I absolutely loved this story, and I don't say that very often. Kathryn Jensen has a fluid, easy writing style that draws the reader into the story and doesn't let go. I have already ordered the books about this earl's middle brother, Matthew, "The American Earl," and about their oldest brother, Thomas. "The Earl Takes a Bride" is his story. Can't wait to read more about the charming Smythe brothers.
A wrong turn takes Jennifer and her tour guests to the wrong castle in Scotland. But the Earl of Winchester, a known playboy aristocrat, is fascinated by the American woman. Christopher Smythe is reluctant to say good-bye when her tour is over and she must return to the United States, but he denies his feelings for her so that she will not pine for him once she is home. He honors a secret that will not allow him to live elsewhere, but he finds he cannot live without Jennifer. He follows her to the U.S. and convinces her to come back to Scotland with him, to live at Castle Donan. She gets involved in restoring the castle with him and eventually finds out his secret. When it becomes her secret as well, she vows to do something about it. Christopher throws her out of his home when she tells him she has taken steps to resolve his tortured soul. He comes to the U.S. once again to apologize when he finds out just what she has done for him, and tell her that he understands that she loved him enough to sacrifice her own happiness for his. He realizes what real love is and that he has loved her from the moment she took a wrong turn into his driveway.
I highly recommend this book. It's a wonderful love story told in a wonderful style. You'll enjoy it.

Customer Reviews:
Great book!.......2007-02-28
I really enjoy this book. It is a fun, fascinating glimpse into the world of the trappers and folks who actually used the sourdough, back in the Day. It is completely untrue that all of the recipes use commercial yeast!! Some of them do, but not many. The author presents a good cross-section of the difficult, demanding recipes that Sourdough can often turn out to be, and also, in some recipes, tries to make things a little simpler for the average home baker. Overall the book is VERY authentic, and a very refreshing book to read, after all the elite Sourdough Snobs there are.
This book turned me against the snobbish world of Sourdough Purists- I don't use a thermometer, I don't use a timer. I just throw in a handful of flour and some warm water in the morning, afternoon, and evening, and stir. (It's a new starter, I'll get to the refrigerator part later- if I need to.) I take out some starter if it seems like it's getting to be too much. I enjoy the process, and enjoy what I'm doing, and my starter is coming along nicely, thank you very much!
The only thing I do wish is that the book was more clear on the various stages that Starters go through, but an internet search resolves that pretty quickly. I highly recommend this book!
Great basic recipes.......2003-06-23
I have several sour dough recipe books, this is one I use most often. My husband loves the banana nut bread, chocolate cake and pancakes from this book.
Good stories, not so good recipes.......2002-07-04
If you want an interesting book about the lore of sourdough - and the experiences of Don and Myrtle Holm, this is a great book.
If you want authentic, useable, sourdough recipes this is not your best choice. All the recipes use baker's yeast in them. Baker's yeast wasn't available to the sourdoughs who made sourdough famous, and it doesn't belong in sourdough.
Don and Myrtle admit you can make sourdough without adding baker's yeast, but they get vague on the details. I'd rather stick to a purist approach to sourdough and just use sourdough to raise and flavor my bread, and for that goal, this book was disappointing.
Instead, look at the books by Ed Wood, Peter Reinhart, or Allan Scott and Dan Wing.
Disappointing intro to sourdough breads.......2002-02-10
I bought this book hoping to get started making my own sourdough bread. Instead, I found a mildly interesting collection of anecdotes, lore, and "recipes" concerning the history of sourdough in the American West. The instructions for making a starter were vague and brief. Most of the recipes called for commercial yeast anyway, making me wonder if the starter was even responsible for any rising that took place. I tried 5 of the recipes in the book and found them all to be bland and disappointing.
sourdough addict.......2000-02-24
Excellent recipes. Our family was brought up on "the old doctors sourdough bread"and it's our granddaughter's favorite. The english muffins and the pizza dough are well worth trying. The chocolate cake is superb. The anecdotes make for easy reading.I just bought two copies as our original-bought in the early seventies is just about worn out.
Customer Reviews:
Best of both worlds.......2006-03-23
Most sourdough cookbooks fall into one of two camps: The hedgers, who add baking powder or commercial yeast to all their recipes, presumably just in case their starter doesn't perform as desired; and the purists, who never add extra leavening to anything. This book straddles the line nicely, providing both kinds of recipes sorted into sections to suit your mood and the amount of time you have available for baking. There is a great chapter explaining how sourdough works and why you need so much time to bake using it, and another devoted to the ins and outs of adapting sourdough for bread machine use. There is a section of recipes using commercial yeast and the regular bread machine cycle, a section using wild yeast and the bread machine cycle, and a section of wild yeast recipes using only the dough cycle.
The authors tell you approximately how many hours each step will take, which is very helpful when planning your baking, but I will confess to being somewhat turned off by the fact that they describe their starters in terms that seem to be specific to Ed Wood's dried starters for sale ('fast', 'slow', 'Russian', 'Austrian', etc.)
Aside from the odd spelt and kamut bread recipes, there are a lot of rye recipes in this book, pitas and rolls, a selection of bread flavors from around the world, and the very best plain sourdough French bread I have ever made. This book is a great addition to any sourdough baker's collection.
TASTY BAKING.......2000-06-09
I have used this cookbook for years, and decided to order one for my daughter, since it is one of the best sourdough cookbooks around. The recipes are well organized, and the results are stunning! For anyone who does sourdough baking, the varieties are quite intriguing, and the occasional odd ingredients are not usually difficult to find, or substitute for. It's been around a while, but since Amazon.com has it, I'm delighted to buy it for gifts.

Customer Reviews:
Thank God and Greyhound it's gone.......2007-07-15
Any one who is interested in sourdough cookery should run in horror away from this book. Thank goodness it is out of print. Whoever wrote this book for Davenport knew nothing of baking and it shows. The basic bread recipes are the worst. FAR too much liquids. Do not be lured by the pretty pictures, this book is a stinker. Run away, run way! I give it one star, because no stars in not an option.
The Ultimate Sourdough Book.......2002-08-30
I had been baking breads for years, and I was still looking for THE BEST pizza crust recipe. On a whim, I bought Sourdough Cookery as it is quite an attractive book with many color pictures not just of recipes but also of baking techniques. I tried the pancakes, which have become a family favorite. Finally, I decided to try the pizza cust recipe - it's PERFECT! This is the ONLY recipe I use to make my pizzas, and friends and family rave about the results EVERY time!!!
The recipes are easy to understand and follow. If you follow the directions exactly, you CAN'T go wrong!
Not only do I regularly use the pizza crust recipe and pancakes recipe, I have also tried a number of the different breads, rolls, and cakes with equally successful results. Another favorite is the onion cheese bread - this is great toasted!
I am very particular about my cookinng, and I have only three books I rely upon for breads as I enjoy this art very much... and this lovely book by Rita Davenport is THE ONE I use for sourdough! My other two favorites are no longer in print, which is a shame as I need to buy new copies of all three due to their beaten-up appearance through constant use! This book is a must have for all serious bread-bakers out there!
It's NOT Sourdough.......2002-07-04
While the book is attractive, and the recipes look interesting, the bottom line is the recipes aren't sourdough. The recipes might work, and I'm sure they are fast. But they aren't sourdough.
Sourdough starters should not be made with baker's yeast, and won't become sourdough until the baker's yeast dies off. All of Rita Davenport's starters use baker's yeast, and all of her recipes use more baker's yeast.
It isn't necessary - or desireable - to use commercial yeast in a sourdough recipe. Doing this means the baker either doesn't understand sourdough, or doesn't trust their starter.
If you are interested in REAL sourdough, don't get a copy of this 1970's home economics styled cookbook. Look instead at Ed Wood's "World Soudoughs from Antiquity" or "Classic Sourdoughs: A Home Baker's Handbook", Peter Reinhart's "The Bread Baker's Apprentice: Mastering the Art of Extraordinary Bread ", or Scott and Wing's "The Bread Builders". Another excellent resource for the budding sourdough baker is the rec.food.sourdough newsgroup.
Looking for a good book on sourdough?.......2002-04-08
You have gotton your sourdough starter, now what do you do with it? I love this book it is a book that focuses only on sourdough recipes. The book starts off with telling you all about sourdough, and how to keep yours alive and healthy. If you don't have a starter, this book gives you 8 recipes for different types of starter, best of all she lets you know what to expect, and how to keep it going, which is very important, as it only gets better with age.
The remainder of this book is filled, and I do mean filled with tons of recipes. She goes beyond just bread, she has recipes on yes breads, biscuits, pancakes, cakes, main dishes and so much more. This is an inexpensive book that is worth every penny for what it has to offer. If you are even considering getting into sourdough bread making, I can't recommend this book enough.
praises for Rita Davenports Sourdough cookbook!!!.......2001-06-06
I have bought about six of her sourdough cookbooks, and given them to friends and my daughter in laws..... and they in turn have recommended them to their friends, and families.... I had to wait a long time once before for these books to be published again..... and now I have more people wanting to purchase one. I do hope you get another supply of these wonderful books in... I hope my book never wears out.. if it isn't a recipe from Rita's book... it just isn't sourdough!!! And such a variety of uses for sourdough! Those pancakes are out of this world! Go Rita! And come on you guys,,, lets get these books back in stock!! We are all waiting!! Lou

Book Description
Featuring 350 color photographs with the loving face of each doll clearly visible to aid in the identification process. This book is a treasure trove filled with detailed photo captions that identify the maker. The author has used research methods to correct many so-called names to the authentic original name. Each doll is credited to the decade in which it was primarily produced. Male china dolls, all-china dolls and reproduction china dolls are described in chapters that are separate from the ten decades of china doll production.
Included are individual dolls from the following German porcelain factories that produced china shoulder head dolls and half-dolls: Alt, Beck & Gottschalck, A.W. Fr. Kister, C.F. Kling & Co., Conta & Boehme, Dressel & Kister, F. & W. Goebel, Hertwig & Co., Kloster Veilsdorf, KPM Berlin, Limbach, Carl Schneider's Erben and Weiss, Kühnert & Co.

Excellent!.......2007-03-01
What a gem! This book has all that is needed about your flea market find. The only complaint is that it didn't cover enough items!
Find information on history, care and preservation. The title says "restore" but I feel that it is preservation that the author covers. Exactly what I wanted as I don't want to make something new and then make it look old again!

A book with information about creating a natural home .......2007-06-28
This is a book with information about creating a natural home. I would not classify this book as a decorating book, but more a book about creating a life and home filled with natural things (eg: environmentally safe items, etc).
In creating my own Natural Home, .......2006-11-22
I came across this book some years ago at at furniture store, I love it and it has always been a apart of my home. I am working on my own Natural Home which I feel is where I have always wanted to be since I was child. I have turn back to basics, castile soap, cleaning with natural products, baking soda and old fashion borax, open windows, planting herb gardens, eating outside in the santuary of my own backyard, family and friends get togethers. This book has given me idea's and help me to add to my own idea's. In so I have created a home with it's own personality...a garden room...a Paris room...a cottage bath...an island room...a natural living room that is so peaceful and tranquil...a dinning room that make folks want to take pictures of it, a home where everyone is welcomed and where everyone wants to stay. My copy sits on my loveseat so it's always part of our home.
Look at the real picture.......2003-04-17
Colors/pigments originate from toxic heavy metals such as lead being red; purples or violets may contain both mercury and lead; yellow and orange may contain cadmium. You've heard of cadmium yellow with artists pigments. Additionally, darker, deeper as well as more fluorescent colors contain the more volatile organic compounds --VOC's.
Some of us have been poisoned with VOC's. I, for one. Carpets made of synthetic fibers and vibrant colors in the USA may contain lots of toxic nerve poisons which are volatile and off gas into the air in our homes, schools, and businesses.
On the other hand, the Natural Home is made up of white and greens because these colors contains less VOC's and hence, are better for our brain and nervous system. They bring us peace and tranquility. They keep our brains sharp and focused. We are not in a brain fog, as we may be with more toxic colors.
BTW, organic solvents, like those in pigments, are also amongst the misnamed inert ingredients in economic poisons that kill or cause harm to pests be they weeds; insects (including ants, roaches and mosquitoes; fungi, bacteria or other pesticides; fragrances, perfumes and colognes; natural gas, gasoline, and plastics, plus numerous other products with which we are being poisoned every day. No wonder white and green bring us peace and tranquility.
I salute The Natural Home by Tricia Foley, et al and encourage more people to read this book.
Serenity Now!.......2000-03-28
I too have moved often (26 times in 25 years). I am also a collector of old things, so I have accumulated a lot. I am also a Virgo which means I must have a connection with organic things. I am also originally from New Orleans which means I have a passion for the old, patinated, historical and verdant. Therefore, I loved Tricia Foley's philosophies. I have always loved color, but now I find myself wanting to unclutter and live simply. I've begun with my bed linens and clothing. Soon, my husband and I are relocating (another move!) and I want to incorporate much of the Natural Home in my new environment. While I will be unable to live with quite the sparcity of the homes pictured, the concept can certainly be modified to fit anyone's lifestyle. More? Less?, it's up to you. The book is a great starting place. Now I'm ordering Linens and Lace because I have chests full of antique linens,(my passion!), acquired thru family or collecting.
Natural means bleak?.......1998-09-22
This is another book I purchased from amazon.com, based on client's reviews. I hoped to get something exciting, but, was disappointed. This book presents a "natural home" as bleak and colorless. The dominating colors are white and green. I don't think nature has only these colors in store. What about the riches of spring, summer and fall colors, the reds, blues, violets, oranges to name a few? The author has an aesthetic eye for displaying pictures. But all in all, I am returning this book for a full refund. I am disappointed because I did not get my money's worth.

Book Description
"Tiege was at one and the same time both an agent provocateur and seismograph, at once provoking action and debate and yet simultaneously reacting with the utmost sensitivity to the shifting political spectrum of his time."
--from the introduction by Kenneth Frampton
Karel Teige (1900-1951), a leading figure of the avant-garde of the 1920s and 1930s, participated in every important argument and controversy of those turbulent years. He edited the most influential avant-garde journals on Czech and international cultural affairs and wrote profoundly original essays and books on the theory and criticism of art and architecture. He also produced paintings, collages, photomontages, film scripts, book covers, and typefaces and participated in theatrical performances.
When the Communists took over Czechoslovakia in 1948, Teige was first hailed as a progressive, then denounced for not toeing the party line--even though he was never a card-carrying member of the Communist Party. He died a broken man, forbidden to speak out or to publish. Since the recovery of his work after the "velvet revolution" of 1989, his legacy has been revived not only in Prague, but also in Western Europe and the United States.
Teige firmly believed in an ars una, free of the artificial separation of one branch of the arts from the other. The concept of ars una is reflected in the essays of this book, which provide intellectual riches without overly compartmentalized attempts at "academic" criticism. Because the only significant writing by Teige to appear so far in English is his well-known argument with Le Corbusier, the "Mundaneum Affair," four essays by Teige have been included.
