Book Description

From "the most subtle and gifted writer in contemporary Spanish literature" (Boston Globe), a riveting novel of infidelity and a man trapped by a terrible secret: now for the first time in paperback.

"No one ever suspects," begins Tomorrow in the Battle Think On Me, "that they might one day find themselves with a dead woman in their arms...."

Marta has just met Víctor when she invites him to dinner at her Madrid apartment while her husband is away on business. When her two-year-old son finally falls asleep, Marta and Víctor retreat to the bedroom. Undressing, she feels suddenly ill; and in his arms, inexplicably, she dies. What should Víctor do? Remove the compromising tape from the phone machine? Leave food for the child, for breakfast? These are just his first steps, but he soon takes matters further; unable to bear the shadows and the unknowing, Víctor plunges into dark waters. And Javier Marías, Europe's master of secrets, of what lies reveal and truth may conceal, is on sure ground in this profound, quirky, and marvelous novel. "Brilliantly imagined and hugely intricate," as La Vanguardia noted, "it is a novel one reads with enormous pleasure."

4 out of 5 stars it will stick with your forever!.......2002-05-27

I read this book because of the title. The author tells us a story about death and unexpected moments in life. After I read this book I've found myself thinking "tomorrow in the battle think on me" very often! Also this book changed my views on death, on dealing with it, and what happens to those left behind after someone's gone.
Great book about thoughts and ideas not so much about events.

5 out of 5 stars Not enough stars.......2001-06-12

At the beginning i thought this book was difficult to follow, and even a bit boring. My first impression is that the author was abusing the 'stream of consciousness' technique, just lost in his thoughts. But i continued reading and soon realized that there was a reason to the apparent 'madness'. This book is a concert of thoughts, all centered in a common point. The tangents or stories in the periphery were designed so skillfully that they complement the story without seeming superfluous: Ruibérriz, Celia/Victoria, el Único, all well defined and colorful characters, and the literary quotes mixed in with the text, the movie scenes, all contributing to enhance a plot already captivating. The main character struggles between decisions already taken or assumed, and the dialogs he has with himself are among the best i have read in Spanish literature in a long time.

The ending is unforeseen. When i thought i knew how things were developing, at the last moment i was surprised. Life can be so ironic, and laugh so much at our expense (or at Deán's expense, in this case).

The additional notes (another surprise i did not discover till the end) are very interesting, and if i had any doubts about the exceptional writer that Javier Marías is, i lost them completely after reading them. This novel cannot be missed.

5 out of 5 stars The ultimate existential novel of our time.......2001-03-21

A unique and haunting novel -- its words and ideas have stayed with me for months after completing it. Its thoughts have stimulated many philosophical discussions. It uses fiction to elaborate the questions of personal and subjective time, and the meaning of the intersubjective space. I regret I can read it only in translation. Nonetheless, the author's voice is unique and inquiring, and I can only imagine the recognition he will get in the future.

5 out of 5 stars Tomorrow in the Battle Think on Me.......1999-12-14

5 out of 5 stars What's with the Same Names for Heros?.......2006-03-18

There was already a hero named Rory in The Black Knave, so I don't understand why the author couldn't come up with another one for this guy. Anyway, this book was very interesting to me. I thought Rory and Felicia were wonderful. Rory was a handsome, loyal man and deserved happiness. I don't know if Jamie Campbell has his own story, but hopefully he'll shine in it, as he was a little dull here.
This was a very good book.

          1 out of 5 stars Don't Bother.......2005-03-01

Nothing happened in the first 300 pages. How many ways can you write that Felecia couldn't fall in love with Rory because their families were in a fued. Likewise, Rory couldn't love Felecia because he was afraid to lose a 3rd wife. They hardly even conversed - I couldn't understand how they developed fellings for one another. Felicia had so much character but she never used it until the last 50 pages. The book had potential but Patricia must have been on a tight schedule. The editing was horrible also. Don't bother with this one.

5 out of 5 stars Patricia Potter does it again!.......2004-10-21

Pat Potter's latest offering, BELOVED IMPOSTER, is another fabulous entry in her growing list of evocative romances. You can't help but root for heroine, Felicia Campbell. Rory Maclean is the kind of hero we all long for. If you adore Scottish romance with characters who creep into your heart, you'll love BELOVED IMPOSTER.

5 out of 5 stars engaging historical romance .......2004-09-08

In 1420 Scotland, Lord MacLean ties his wife Mary to a rock to die when the tide comes in. Nurse Siobhan Campbell curses the MacLeans insisting no woman will ever replace Mary.

In 1511 Uncle Ansys Campbell informs his orphaned niece Felicia that the King demands she marry brutal Morreth. She refuses, but acts compliant because she knows her only way out is to flee.

Rory MacLean has returned home after years at sea because his clan needs him. His men decide he needs a wife so they abduct a woman they think is Janet Cameron. Felicia realizes what has happened and pretends to be her friend Janet because she does not want to be returned to her uncle. Rory is irate with his men for the kidnapping especially since he has vowed to never marry again since his first two spouses died because he believes of the curse. Felicia works every ruse to stay until she can escape, but soon she and her host fall in love. She knows she owes him the truth that she is a member of his enemy clan while he rejects marriage because he refuses to place the woman he loves in jeopardy.

This is an engaging historical romance with a touch of the supernatural or perhaps a belief fostered by coincidence (read to learn which). Rory is a terrific hero who feels like a fish out of water, but finds wanting to become a landlubber. The support cast adds depth, but the fun sixteenth century novel belongs to the courageous Felicia who refuses to let a monarch, a guardian, a stubborn beloved, or a curse stop her from obtaining her desire.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome !st Book In New Trilogy.......2004-09-07

Setting - Scotland, 1511 --- Felicia Campbell could not believe the letter she held in her hands. Her guardian uncle had arranged, by order of the king, her marriage to wed a brutal man three times her age, whose last wife had died under mysterious circumstances. She knew she wasn't pretty, and didn't expect much in the way of matrimony but this was beyond the pale. With the help of her beautiful friend, Janet Cameron, betrothed to her beloved cousin Jamie, they devised a plan to help her escape before being escorted to her doom. The escape from her escort went well, that is, until a neighboring clan that mistook her for the beautiful Lady Janet abducted her. Worse still was the fact that her abductors were from Clan Maclean - a clan that was a bitter enemy of Clan Campbell.

Rory Maclean, after an absence of ten years sailing the seas had come home at the summons of the clan. His father dead, his older brother missing, he had hopes of making peace and putting a stop to the bloodshed then return to his beloved sea. With good intentions, the elder clan members felt that if they could find him a comely bride to produce an heir, they just might convince him to remain at home and provide the leadership they sorely needed. A curse had been thrown down years before when the laird of the MacLeans had tried murdering his infertile Campbell wife - the curse prophesized that no bride of the Macleans would ever live long or happily. After losing two wives, Rory had sworn that he would never marry again.

His reaction to the woman his clan mistakenly brought home to him was that he would take her back to the Camerons immediately but he hadn't figured on her igniting the passions he'd thought to have buried long ago. Felicia, realizing she was on borrowed time before her real identity would be discovered, was ready to grasp whatever happiness she could, from the divinely attractive and Laird. Before being sacrificed for her people she would fulfill her passionate dreams with the man who made her heart sing.

This was a very well paced story of mistaken identity with a nice amount of historical court intrigue thrown in at the end to cap off this delicious period romance. Rory was a truly great hero who truly didn't want the leadership of the clan but a good and honorable man who shouldered the responsibilities thrust upon him. While Felicia was not penned as a beauty, Rory recognized the inner beauty of Felicia thru her strengths and beautiful heart. With beautiful and intelligent dialogs, Potter has crafted an exciting adventure, rich in historical background and with a sensual laden story line. Bottom Line - I plan to look for and will anxiously await the next volumes of the rest of this planned trilogy. --- Marilyn Rondeau, for www.historicalromancewriters.com ---

                              Book Description

Written by the great Hasidic master Rabbi Schneur Zalman of Liadi in the late eighteenth century, the Tanya is considered to be one of the most extraordinary books of moral teachings ever written.
A seminal document in the study of Kabbalah, the Tanya explores and solves the dilemmas of the human soul by arriving at the root causes of its struggles. Though it is a classic Jewish spiritual text, the Tanya and its present commentary take a broad and comprehensive approach that is not specific to Judaism nor tied to a particular personality type or time or point of view.
Opening the Tanya is a groundbreaking book that offers a definitive introduction, explanation, and commentary upon the Tanya. As relevant today as it was when it was first written more than two hundred years ago, the Tanya helps us to see the many thousands of complexities, doubts, and drives within us as expressions of a single basic problem, the struggle between our Godly Soul and our Animal Soul.

Rabbi Steinsaltz for many years gave a shiur on Thursday evenings in the 'Chovvei Tsion' shul. At one point anyway, he gave 'shiurim' on Tanya. I attended these shiurim on and off for a few years. I would always look for some insight I could take home with me , while understanding that I would not really follow the whole argument, or understand the text comprehensively.
A book like the present one provides a certain introduction and entree to a very difficult text.

The Chabad Lubavitchers would like for people to believe that the Tanya is a widely accepted book in Jewish circles. It isn't. It's only accepted by their chasidim and even the top leaders in their movement don't believe in its doctrines.

I just received this book and have read only the introductory matierial and chapter one as yet, but this is a book I will keep in my home library. Each line(s) of the Tanya is explained by Rabbi Steinsaltz in language that even allows one not trained in Kabbalah and Hassidism to understand. As a Christian who is studying Kabbalah, this book has opened a new and deeper understanding for me of many of the teachings in Kabbalah by tying them to verses in the Torah, Talmud, and other writings which would otherwise be inaccessible to me. Rabbi Steinsaltz has helped me wade into the waters of Rabbi Ashlag's writings as well. A book for seekers after Wisdom.

                                    Book Description

Doll kitchens in Germany were originally a plaything for adults and evolved, toward the end of Eighteenth century, into toys for children. In this book, Eva Stille follows the evolution of the doll kitchen and shows how the social development of "big" real kitchens influenced doll kitchens in each new era. The manufacturers of the doll kitchens are listed as well as a wide variety of miniature furnishings, appliances and stoves that was once available to children. These items are now highly collectible and ironically have once again become the playthings of adults.

I bought this book to help me choose furniture for my own doll's kitchen. I am very pleased! The large, detailed pictures tell you more about doll kitchens and full sized kitchens than books about historical interiors. If you are planning a victorian dollhouse, skip the history books and get this one instead! My only disappointment is with the title. It really should be "Doll Kitchens, 1860-1980" because the information pre-1860 was scanty. The author covers those sixty years too quickly, then goes into great detail about the 1860's onward.

15 projects all folk toys. Very complete with scale drawings. Most toys require some assembly, for example "Dutch Doll with jointed limbs" is made from 10 turned pieces. Black & white with lots of text and pictures. Color gallery is of each completed project with suggested painting. The instructions and pictures are well done, easy to follow with enough detail to do each project. Short, helpful intro on tools/techniques. Projects: Baby Doll, Lady Doll Shaker, Jumping Jack, Baby's Rattle with Rings, Dutch Doll with Jointed Limbs, Set of Clown Skittles and Two Balls, Bilboquet Game, Stand-up Tumble Doll, Pull-string spinning top, German Nutcracker Soldier, Round-about, Czechoslovakian Trumpet, Pull-along acrobats, Rocking Horse and Rider, Farm Tractor and Trailer.

The Swedish palette of soft pastels conveys an aesthetic simplicity like no other. Even though I do not live in a stately mansion or a castle (beautifully photographed throughout the book) I became inspired to add the same colors and textures to my own decor. Stenciled borders, tromp l' oleil, marbling, and delicately painted wall canvases add harmony and warmth to your living space.

The cover and the look-inside-glimpse do not do this book justice att all. It's not all that rural and folksy, but has wide range of interiors from palaces, mansions, farms and cottages. The in-put from Italy (and later France) was huge in the days when Sweden was a major European power in the 17th century. The book moves on into the Gustavian era of simple elegance and continues to regency and the summer-houses that became popular in the 19th century. A very well illustrated book with excellent photos.

5 out of 5 stars The Swedish Room.......2003-06-06

Beautiful book, well researched and written with carefully selected and beautiful photos. A must have for anyone interested in Gustavian interiors and the homes that contain them. The interiors selected for this book are the relatively simpler ones with soft color schemes and a cleaner, pared-down look - ones more acceptable to contemporary tastes - rather than the gilded neoclassical palaces of the same period. If you are interested in the more palatial interiors of the same period I recommend: Neoclassicism in the North, Swedish Furniture and Interiors 1770-1850 . I noticed in browsing through this book, that a number of the interiors selected for inclusion in The Swedish Room are actually the simplest rooms in otherwise grand palaces.
A very pleasing selection of interior views overall and much better than Barbara Stoeltie's similar book, The Country Houses of Sweden.

                                    5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive & useful.......2003-03-20

I have found this book a constant inspiration when considering the Swedish style in general and Gustavian in particular.

The photos and colours are excellent. The text begins by being historically interesting and illuminating but becomes unfocussed and then banal. The translation is awkward in parts. Still the information is superior to the commonly gushy interior design style.

Although there is a section on contemporary versions of the classic Swedish styles, it remains primarily an homage to the original rather than an illustration of an inventive combination.

                                    Nonetheless, an excellent reference book.

                                                      Book Description

Wynton Marsalis's captivating text and Frank Stewart's stunning photographs give readers a year in the life of today's premier jazz musician and composer. Marsalis's account of his world of grueling travel, performances, and backstage encounters includes views on rap, the road, romance, creativity, politics, culture, and the role of the artist in American society. By turns lyrical, down to earth, exalted, and profane, the book itself is structured like the "sweet swing blues" of the title. 180 photos.

Combine Armstrong, Ellington, Twain and Leonard Bernstein and you get Wynton Marsalis. His musical genius is well-established but his prose writing is just as good. SWEET SWING is part travelogue, part history book, part opera, part day-in-the-life of a jazz band, part philosophy of celebration of existence. A total package of words that swing, baby, from sentence to sentence. There is enough in this book to delight anyone with eyes and ears!
You tap your feet and snap yr fingers to Marsalis' writing. If you weren't a jazz fan before reading this magnum opus, you will be now.
Frank Stewart's photography supplies a visual rhythm section spanning the entire keyboard of jazz and American existence!

The book "Sweet Swing Blues on the Road" is a fantastic view into the life of American jazz darling Wynton Marsalis.

It professes and appears at first glance to be about life touring on the road, but instead reveals itself as a collection of essays about subjects as diverse as bandmates, romance, and of course music.

The tone Marsalis takes is very reminiscent of his good friend, Stanley Crouch, who wrote most of the liner notes for Marsalis' albums. However, while Crouch can come off as losing a ferocious battle against the English language, Marsalis seems earthy, clever, and insightful.

Marsalis writes like a musician or every black preacher worth a drive. He has a cadence. A strong cadence. A cadence that finds resonation in the soul. He developes writing themes like any good improviser should.

It is clear that Marsalis has spent time with noted writer Albert Murray, whose book "Stomping the Blues" finds a kindred heart in "Swing Sweet . . ."

Readers receive a sneak peak at Marsalis' Pulitzer-prize winning epic "Blood on the Fields" as some of the sights of this book reappear in that work. Readers also find themselves agreeing with Marsalis' view of rap ("Rappers have funny haircuts") and misunderstandings of jazz.

Photographer Frank Stewart provides visual compliments to the text in fine black and white fashion. Perhaps the belle of this ball is the out of fucus shot of the late Dizzy Gillespie with an in-focus sillouette of Marsalis in the foreground.

"Swing Sweet home blues" is a great book that people who like jazz would love and those who don't understand jazz owe to themselves to check out.

There's more to Mr. Marsalis than his stewardship of the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra. There's even more to him than his relationship with Albert Murray and Stanley Crouch. This book is--in addition to being a polemic on self-worth, love, and swing--the diary of one of the greatest working jazz bands of all time (well, since Buddy Bolden, anyway): The Wynton Marsalis Septet. Wynton gives you a seat on the bus, and it's an illuminating look at the life of a working band. My only quibble is that too many pictures go without captions: It's up to you to figure out that Wynton is hugging Clark Terry somewhere in Greenwich Village.

Wynton Marsalis is commonly referred to as the leader of the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra in New York. His fame was established through years of touring with his brilliant Wynton Marsalis Septet. It is from that period in his creative life that this memory album comes. Frank Stewart's genius snapshots are complimented by Marsalis' commentary on a multitude of topics. Some excerpts are just recollections, others read like sermons. If nothing else, one is given a chance to observe Wynton in all of his elements - intellectually, musically, and socialy as well. His band is also introduced throughout the episodes. A highly intimate journey through the life of a jazz legend in our time.

It is clear that Marsalis has spent time with noted writer Albert Murray, whose book "Stomping the Blues" finds a kindred heart in "Swing Sweet . . ."
