In keeping with its minimalist content, Amy Hempel's latest collection of seven stories and a novella weighs in at a slim 155 pages; what the book lacks in heft, however, it more than makes up for in mood. Hempel, the author of two other short-story collections, is a master of witty understatement. In "The Children's Party," the narrator gives some advice to a father whose children feel that getting a new dog after the old one was killed would be disloyal: "'Tell them this: The need for the new love is faithfulness to the old,'" to which the father replies, "'That's what I used to tell myself when I cheated on my ex-wife.'" In Hempel's stories, nothing much happens, yet everything changes.
The collection's title is taken from the novella, in which a woman committed to a psychiatric institution writes a letter to a famous painter she has only met once. The letter is written over the course of several days, and as the writer chronicles her life among the other patients, she reveals her wounded psyche and her struggle to find home, "the place where nothing can touch you." In one way or another, all of Hempel's characters are looking for home, but there is nothing epic in their voyages of discovery; rather, it is in the little things--the touch of an unshaven cheek, a school of bluefish leaping in the surf, a baby's grave--that Hempel captures a whole world of feeling.

Great writer.......2007-07-28
Hempel is a great writer. The stories aren't for fans of writers like, say, Stephen King (he's my favorite author), but anyone can appreciate Hempel's work.
Beautiful Flaws.......2006-11-10
Amy Hempel reminds me of the time I went to a new doctor...and waited and waited for her surrounded by horribly slick renderings of "great art," sitting on the world's most uncomfortable chairs. Waiting. By the time the doctor showed up I was beside myself with whole menus of outrage. But when she introduced herself to me, I saw that her mascara had run all down her face and she looked a bit of a wreck. I loved her for it instantly.
extraordinary form, and watch closely.......2006-08-12
Amy Hempel is a writer you don't want to read lazily. Even in her 70+ page title novella, you don't want to flash over a single syllable, for Hempel is an intensive writer of the unsaid, working with both what is on the page and what isn't to convey the complex emotions of her characters. Also, since many of her narrators or narratives are disjointed in some way (or, like in the title novella, unbalanced), their methods of storytelling are often indirect in form, but direct in emotion.
Hempel's clearest strength has to do with the unmediated emotions she creates in her prose. Rather than thoughtful response, she tends to first engage emotionally, throwing us squarely into a character's head, however uncomfortable that may be. In "Sportsman," for example, Jack has been turned out in an act of what he deems as betrayal, and so drives across the country to find solace. He is mistrusting, alone and heartbroken, and Hempel does not filter out what might be unpleasant about his situation for the sake of sentimentality. Instead, she engages it honestly (and wittily) to make Jack and his friends fleshed out and alive.
Not to say that Hempel works only on an emotional level. Her writing clearly has a lot of intellectual appeal. She exhibits great play with language and a magnificent ear for the quirks of conversation (any party scene in this book will hit you with smart dialogue you'll want to emulate), and her writing is surgically prescise, though maybe too precise at times. Stories like "Sportsman" and "Church Cancels Cow" and the novella _Tumble Home_ run a tight wire of meshing their characters and their metaphors without seam, but other stories, like "The Children's Party," end up with forced metaphor, like pieces whose endings feel a little more contrived than organic, but I will credit Hempel here with her successes in this book rather than disparage her for ithe book's faults. It's a short book, but well worth taking your time with, to wring every idea from.
Uninteresting and uninspiring.......2005-05-29
I really didn't like these stories. The narrative voice wasn't compelling, and when I finished, I usually thought, "And? So what?" Not recommended
Don't let the shortness and simplicity fool you..........2004-11-06
...this is an amazing piece of work. I loved reading Tumble Home. This short-story collection is brief (only 160 pages long) and the stories are deceptively simple. But each story holds profound messages centered on family life and other every day events that may seem insignificant at first glance. My favorite stories are "Sportsman," "The New Lodger," "The Children's Party," and the novella "Tumble Home." Again, the stories are very short, but nevertheless beautiful. Amy Hempel's writing is sparse but possesses such beautiful prose that I just couldn't put this collection down. Hers is a voice that sounds poetic at times. I recommend this book to all short-story lovers.

Wonderful Book!.......2007-08-14
Eric Murray and Bethia's Story.
This is book 1 of the Murray family. These are the parents of the Murray girls that are in many of the Highland books!
I really liked this story!
Going Downhill--Fast........2006-09-22
I first picked up one of Ms Howell's works a few months back--on my honemoon, ironically. I enjoyed the action, adventure, and the general cheese that comes with this genre. But the last few books I've bought of hers are just getting worse and worse. In the four books of hers I own:
- All of the main female characters are described in disturbingly child-like terms, with tiny booted feet, mysteriously long fingers, enchanting, elfin looks, and a general prepubescent demeanor and world view.
- All of the main male characters are burly, hairy only in the right places, have perfect teeth, long straight noses, and pointy sticks.
- All of the drama revolves around wooden characatures of people who torment one or both of the main characters. They have no dimension, feeling, or explanation of their wacky behavior.
- All the sex scenes (And be honest, this is a big factor of these books) are bland and predictable.
Worse yet, this book introduces the hitherto unknown factor of the Perfect Toddler (tm) who only cries when it is plot point, who never spits up, and who sleeps through the night after being uprooted, loosing his parents, and being made to sleep in the woods with a strange man. HUH?
Highland Promise gets 2 stars instead of 1 because there is still a hint of charm left; her characters have spunk in their own special, wooden way. I expected much more from Ms Howell, but she has failed to deliver.
Enjoyable (Murray Brothers Book # 3).......2005-04-29
In this third and final installment in Hannah Howell's Highland Series featuring the Murray brothers, we get to see Eric Murray finally meet his fate and also claim his rightful birthright as laird of Dubhlinn. If you have read the first two novels, HIGHLAND DESTINY and HIGHLAND HONOR, you would be familiar with Eric's parentage - that he is really a Beaton by birth, but have been fostered by Balfour and Nigel and raised as a Murray.
Now after thirteen years of petitioning the king to grant him lairdship of Dubhlinn, Eric has had enough and decided to finally face his mother's kinsmen and ask them to aid his cause. On his way there, he comes across a tiny woman bravely trying to fend off some thieves. He comes to her rescue and learns that she is running away from Sir William, who has already killed her twin sister and her husband and now wants her and her nephew, James, dead.
When Bethia Drummond learns that Eric is on his way to Bealachan, which is near her home Dunnbea, she accepts his offer to escort them home. But she soon realizes that along with the danger of Sir William capturing them is the danger of what her attraction to Eric will lead.
HIGHLAND PROMISE is another adventurous tale of honor, love and betrayal. As typical of Hannah Howell, her Scottish warriors are honorable men; intent on protecting the people they care about. I liked how Eric has turned out to be as great a man as his brothers are, and how protective of Bethia and James he became. His anger towards Bethia's parents' disregard for her and his need to take her away from Dunnbea is real heart-warming. And Bethia is such an endearing character. Having lived in her beautiful sister's shadow all her life and being cast aside by her own parents due to her plainness, one can't help but sympathize with her and wish her every happiness with Eric and little James.
This is another good novel by Ms Howell. I would also recommend reading HIGHLAND BRIDE featuring Eric and Bethia's daughter Gillyanne, which is a highly entertaining and really hilarious read (better than this!)
Great, Fun, and Um,,,,Yummy Read!.......2004-05-26
This was actually my first Hannah Howell book. Since reading this one, I've read several others, and re-read this one two or three times! Bethia caught my attention right away. She is tiny, with one green and one blue eye, hair the color of autumn, and she sticks up for her loved ones like a 200 lb. tiger, often with no thanks. That is until one fateful day whan Sir Eric Murray happens upon her, and sees her bravely, but against unbeatably odds defending herself and her baby nephew (who she has already rescued, along with herself from being poisoned, though she wasn't in time to save her twin and twin's husband). Sir Eric sees Bethia, and though he doesn't quite recognize it, loses his heart. He has one of the handsomest faces in Scotland, and is a very good man and knight. But even though he seems big to Bethia, he is on the small side too. They start their journey together to get young laird James to Bethia's home after Eric swears he will do so. They both have much to learn, and Ms. Howell tells the tale with humor, excitment, passion, embarrassment when wanted, suspense at times, danger, big brothers, big cousins, kings, etc. all throwing their two cents in, and of course, Eric not quite trusting to tell a few details. I haven't found a book of Ms. Howell's I don't like yet, but this one remains my favorite. There is just something very charming about the insecurities of Bethia and her overcoming them. And who can resist such a handsome hero! Even when he does have a few lessons to learn? I recommend this book wholeheartedly, but not if you don't like hot under the collar love scenes! Oh boy, I enjoyed! Every word!
Enchanting!.......2003-04-11
Romance at it's best! A quick and highly enjoyable read!

Book Description
Family is the first love that we as human beings ever experience. Whether it is the love of our parents or the love of our siblings, it is still our first love. After family our love turns to ourselves, friends, and our home; or the place in which we live and will always be a part of who we are as individuals. The third chapter was the hardest for me to write. It deals with the emotions I went through in the grieving of my deceased husband. It was writing, my friends, and my family that got me through those darkest of days. The chapter that ends the book is the chapter that starts my life. New love is the dawning of a new time and means as much as the dawning of a new day.

Spread of Islam.......2007-10-08
Malaysia and Indonesia are biggest Islamic Countries in the World. Islamic army have never reached to these far lands. Islam has spread there through good practices of Muslim business men. And islam now is fastest growing religion in the USA and the whole world despite of constant attack of western media and crusaders.
Thank you.
Unvarnished Scoop.......2007-10-04
The Sword of the Prophet gives an unvarnished look at Islam by means of its history. We see its foundations, its unifying spirit but also its sects and factions, its periods of expansion and of decay, its theology and the cultures it forms. Trifcovic also shows Islam's disdain for values of the modern West: tolerance, personal freedom, individualism, competition, non-violence, progress, and the like.
Worth the price.......2007-03-31
This book draws on a huge wealth of history about Islam and Muhammad. The historical references speak for themselves as to a "religion of peace" which cannot be legitimately claimed for either Muhammad or Islam. Anyone interested in historical accuracy and truth needs to read this book. It will not be possible to have a dialogue with adherents to Islam until the historical record as presented by Trifkovic - and others - becomes accepted.
It is unfortunate that defenders of Islam and Muhammad - Islamic and non-Islamic - refuse to acknowledge the Islamic past of slaughter, rape, pillage and enslavement. In the West, millions and millions of pages and tens of thousands of scholars have detailed the history of Western Civilization, with all its warts, wars, advances and discoveries. Yet attempts to explore the history of Islam are too often met with anger, denial, threats and outright lies. Why? As the great Bernard Lewis has said, because of opposition to the truth, it is difficult for an academic to pursue topics such as Islamic racism and slavery.
This book goes a long way in shedding light on a very unsavory past. Muslims and Islamophiles need to admit it.
I have a few quarrels with the methods or lack thereof with sourcing. Footnotes need to be done more correctly and statements in the text need to be referenced more fully.
Head and shoulders above his Defeating Jihad.
Dr. Robert D. Foster
A MUST READ.......2007-02-25
I wish all our leaders in Washington would read this book.
Islam is a very great danger to Western values.
Once you take the red pill there's no going back.......2007-01-25
Excellent book for seeing the islam that some like to ignore, or even rationalize for. this book will open your eyes and you will lose sleep when the reality of islams role in the world becomes clear. The beliefs of islam the media and the muslims will not tell you about. You will not be able to stop looking into the history and current state of islam after reading this. Some are happy to walk around blindly, so be warned once your eyes are open there's no going back to your old comfort zone. and very well documented, i suggest find a web site that has an english koran to read for yourself the passages cited in trifkovics' book. once your done reading be sure to pass this book on to a friend or relative.

Clinton Center Cookbook Hits the Spot.......2004-03-27
The Clinton Center Cookbook really hit the spot! Not only did it help cure my hunger...it also cured my boredom! Well written and full of insight, it has made dinner tasty and entertaining. Thank you for writing such a superb book.
Cooking in Clinton's Kitchen.......2004-03-16
The Clinton Foundation's collection of recipes brings out the best of both the political and culinary worlds by sharing delicious recipes worthy of trying out in your own kitchen. Being able to prepare dishes and meals enjoyed by those you admire is simply amazing and worth exploring the recipes in this cookbook.
Kudos to the fantastic Clinton Foundation and the remarkable chefs who made this cookbook possible! This is one cookbook that no one should be without.
Tasty and Profound.......2004-03-16
This book demonstrates President Clinton's extraodrinary ability to extend his personality from the esoteric to the everyday. Equally at home in the Oval Office and in his friends' kitchens, he travels between worlds like no other since Henry V.
Moreover his book's editor seems to understand (as Hemingway did) that, in an unsure and often disconcerting modern world, the basic comfort of good eating cannot be overstated. And no doubt we are in greater need of such comfort in the wake of President Clinton's departure from the Whitehouse.
Thank you President Clinton and Friends for these wonderful recipes!!

Collector's Inventory ???.......2007-05-14
Problems with this inventory book are numerous.
1. The book only lists dates up to the current date, no place for future years of coins. So you inventory your collection up to 2007 and next year... buy another book??
2. The book seems to have forgotten about silver and golden eagles, well not too many of us are interested in that trash anyway.
3. It would be nice if there were a few blank pages between each catagory for additional notes ie., error coins not listed etc.
In my opinion one would be better off buying a three ring binder to inventory their collection.
Coin Inventory.......2006-05-31
As a novice collector, I found this product to be very useful. Previously, it was very frustrating for me to use a larger, spiral-bound notebook to keep track of coins I needed/already had, their conditions, where bought from, prices, etc. Also, my makeshift method of listing (simply writing down the series, year, mintmark, and condition of each coin in my collection) was not very helpful while shopping, because I had to scan through the whole list to see which coins I needed to acquire. This was just too cumbersome and ineffcient for going to coin shows and the like. This book is very compact and it already has information like mintages and mintmarks printed for most of the coin series published in Whitman's ubiquitous 'Redbook'. I suspect that some more advanced and/or technically-savvy collectors may find it too rudimentary, especially if they are proficient in using spreadsheets or commercial, coin inventory software. But for other collectors, partciularly those who like to use pencil and pad, this is a great tool. When I recently attended a coin show on the east coast, I was first introduced to this product by a dealer who used it to copiously make notes. So dealers, maybe you should check it out.

Useful Beauty.......2007-06-01
I found this book to be interesting and informative. It had some good suggestions for, as it says, useful beauty. Although most books are on the how to's only, this book did include design ideas. However, the items were not all that unknown and different, so I found myself interested more in the technique he used than in the ideas themselves. I think it is a good beginner book but not really interesting to a more experienced turner.
Nice general instruction in a good and well organized book.......2007-05-20
Dick Sing is one of the better woodturners that can explain things to my level as an average person. I like them!
useful beauty: turning practical on a woodlathe.......2007-01-04
i thouch it was a very good book and come in handy
Fun Projects.......2005-09-07
The author (D. Sing) really likes his work. It shows in this book. He has put together a lot of just fun to do projects that still have usefullness beyond beauty.
My only real complaint about the book is it isn't always easy to understand how to construct the project. Some of the turing can be tricky, and there needs to be more explanation on some of these turnings.
One problem I have found with most "how to" books is the person writing the book really has a knack for this kind of work. They just breeze through painting, drawing, wood working, wood turning etc and often just can't recongnize what the problems are for those of us who do not have the built in knack. And, of course the person has been doing these projects for years and can do a lot of basic things by eye or they just "know" how to hold the skew (or paint brush or whatever). This book suffers somewhat from that problem. What is just no big deal or not even thought about by Mr. Sing is very hard for me to do.
Overall, a good book with a lot of fun projects.
Book Description
25-35 year olds with an eye for style and a brain for economy will find the hottest, cleverest decorating ideas and use them to turn an ordinary apartment into a fabulous abode.
Have an apartment that's hip and chic, filled with cool attitude and drop-dead style. Better yet, do it on the cheap, and even when the landlord prohibits so much as a new paint job. This is simply the must-have manual for young people with little money and less time, who have had quite enough of boring white walls, unflattering fluorescent lighting, and outdoor-grade carpeting. Every decorating dilemma is smartly solved. Want color on the walls? Then try fabric stripes that adhere with nothing more than spray starch. Does the floor have unsightly stains? Whip up a floorcloth that looks high-end but isn't, because it began life as a cotton tablecloth. Every project and suggestion is worth its weight in gold--but costs just pennies.

Geared towards college kids.......2007-05-09
There are a couple of good DIY instructions, like how to make your own ottoman, but you can find similar guides in a magazine or on-line. The majority of the ideas are way too juvenile looking for my taste. Unfortunately, I won't be keeping this book.
Loved it! If you like modern & funky interiors, check it out.......2006-11-27
I thought this was a great book. The photography, in particular, is stellar.
I probably won't get around to building any of the projects in the book exactly as the author created them, but it is one of my favorite books of the year in terms of providing a great design influence. By that I mean that I really liked the feel and style of a lot of the projects, so that was where its value is for me. I also really like design that has a re-use & recycle slant to it, so this was up my alley. The book won't be all things to all people-- which one ever is?-- but if you like ReadyMade magazine, for example, and if you appreciate DIY modern design with a funky flair, I definitely recommend this book.
Such a let down.......2006-11-14
If you are looking for a book to give you the absolute basics, you've found your book. The projects are simplistic and unimaginitive. The ideas uninspired. Most seem to be something you could find in any craft or do-it-yourself magazine.
I had high hopes, but this is really a book for someone that has no imagination what-so-ever.
Great book for crafters and budget decorators!.......2006-07-15
This book primarily deals with making accessories for your home, and is full of great ideas for making things on the cheap. It provides just the inspiration a creative mind needs to take some great, basic design ideas and run with them.
In perusing this book, I've found ideas on just about every page that I can either utilize as the author outlines, or alter to my own design style (as the design style in this book is mostly for contemporary/modern or eclectic/retro interiors). Even better, the ideas outlined in this book all require very little cost, and are perfect for teens or college-students or young adults.
My only real dismay with this book is that it's light on design for functional furniture. It has a lot of ideas for making things like coasters, lighting, wall decor, etc. but is really lacking in functional pieces. One of the few functional designs shown in the book is for a chair that requires utilizing a pipe bender--and I don't know about you, but who wants to be bothered renting a pipe-bender, when we can go buy the same chair it shows us how to make at Ikea for $20?
Nonetheless, it's one of the better books I've seen in a while, where crafting for the home is concerned. It's hip, fresh, and a great resource for those of us who like to make something out of nothing.
Fun, Hip Home Decor Projects.......2006-05-28
What an unexpected project book. Oftentimes, when I see "hip" or "homemade" in book titles, my expectations of the quality of the projects presented is suspended. What a nice surprise. The majority of the projects are so well done that it makes this book worth your time and money. Even though my decorating style is not "hip", I definitely would recommend this book.
I think the best section of the book was the lighting chapter. Many projects were assembled using regular household or easily obtainable objects. There were several projects that popped out at me and really caught my eye. My favorite was the Domino Art on page 12 and 117. Wow! Other items I liked were:
* Art paper Shade Tube, pg 61
* Bowl brush holder lamp, pg 69
* Amoeba Light, pg 72
* Rolling 2-Tier coffee table, pg 97 (have seen this built on decorating shows)
* Crate Ottoman, pg 101
If you like "hip" modernistic décor, you will find this book an inspiration.

Waste of time and money.......2005-12-26
Well, I must say I am very disappointed with this book. The way things are ordered in it, is very bad, with a lots of incomplete examples about corporate identity designs. The design examples, are very poor and they don't reflect the good and modern graphic design nowadays. Don't waste your money and time on this book. Please take a good look at your street, I'm sure you will find there better graphic design examples.

One of the best books released by David E. Carter.......2007-09-09
This book is really global, gathering creative artwork from all over the globe, bits and pieces from all over the world.
Its a true corporate identity and branding designer / conceptualist guideline. Lots of ideas are stacked in this book.
I personally have 2 editions or copies, one for Beirut office and one for Dubai Office.
It is a true must have book, a necessity in every art director, graphic designer, and creative individual's library, a real guide to logo and identity design.

Book Description
Since the 1980s, David E. Carter had produced the best-selling American Corporate Identity annual, showing the best new work in corporate identity design from the United States.
Now, Carter has edited an international counterpart: Global Corporate Identity. The book has all the elements that have made American Corporate Identity such a popular reference book, with seven categories of corporate design: logos, letterheads, package design, complete identity programs, corporate identity manuals, signage & environmental graphics, and corporate brochures.
Like American Corporate Identity, Global Corporate Identity is printed in full color and hardcover. The primary difference in the two books is in content: While American Corporate Identity includes only firms from the USA, Global Corporate Identity is predominantly filled with work from outside the United States. In all, about 70% of the pieces shown in this book are from places outside the USA.
The American entries are, for the most part, representative of firms who do business outside the United States. The result is a comprehensive overview of the current corporate identity state of the art for those firms marketing on a multinational basis.
Every designer who wants to keep up with the latest trends in international corporate identity will find this a must-have reference.

As a huge fan of the Y&R from its inception, I was very entharalled and delighted with this book. It is a *MUST* read for any fan of this show. Not only does it take you down memory lane, but it refreshes the memory of many story lines.
I thought it was a great and informative book........1999-01-13
This book told of the trials and tribulations of the characters of the past. It helped new viewers to catch up on the events of the past, while taking life long watchers on a trip down memory lane. Great Job!!
