Book Description
Nobel laureate Halldór Laxness’s
Under the Glacier is a one-of-a-kind masterpiece, a wryly provocative novel at once earthy and otherworldly. At its outset, the Bishop of Iceland dispatches a young emissary to investigate certain charges against the pastor at Sn?fells Glacier, who, among other things, appears to have given up burying the dead. But once he arrives, the emissary finds that this dereliction counts only as a mild eccentricity in a community that regards itself as the center of the world and where Creation itself is a work in progress.
What is the emissary to make, for example, of the boarded-up church? What about the mysterious building that has sprung up alongside it? Or the fact that Pastor Primus spends most of his time shoeing horses? Or that his wife, Ua (pronounced “ooh-a,” which is what men invariably sputter upon seeing her), is rumored never to have bathed, eaten, or slept? Piling improbability on top of improbability,
Under the Glacier overflows with comedy both wild and deadpan as it conjures a phantasmagoria as beguiling as it is profound.

A Metaphysical Hoot.......2006-04-09
One of the funniest "spiritual" books ever written, this one gets better as it goes along and ends astoundingly. The sketchy prose style is wonderfully transparent and must have been a pleasure to write: no muss, no fuss--an old man's work, with no words to spare and none extra needed. My only warning would be to avoid Susan Sontag's introduction, which makes so many claims for the book's comprehensive greatness that Laxness's novel sinks beneath their weight. It's best read afterward, certainly. I'm an odd reader: once a book has won me over, it has me completely, and this is one of them.
My fault perhaps...........2005-11-22
First, having now read some of Magnusson's other translations, it must be said here that he does a fine job adapting this book for the nether world of English readers.
Now for the nitty gritty. The blurbs used here, with one exception, were not written for this book, but are general ones about a great author. I only noted this after reading the book. The most obvious point, and least controversial: UNDER THE GLACIER is not as accomplished as INDEPENDENT PEOPLE or WORLD LIGHT.
That in itself is no crime.
Maybe it's just that I've lived through Giuliani's assualt on the arts here in New York, but the high modernist moment for its own sake no longer does much for me. The themes in this later work by Laxness are well worn, and handled better elsewhere. Flann O'Brien comes to mind first. Laxness is better on more hallowed ground than this, which is ironic given that the title of this book in Icelandic is _Kristnihald undir jökli_, or _Christianity Under Glacier_.
In a nutshell: This is an odd salmagundi of Nietzschean arcana that's worth reading if you A). like that sort of thing or B). have enjoyed other books by Laxness.
Soul on Ice.......2005-10-23
It's never been easy or popular to challenge established religious doctrines. Jesus was crucified for his teachings. Copernicus and Galileo unsuccessfully used science, math and logic to confront Church teachings. And, monk Martin Luther never did get the Church elders to buy his argument that every individual should be able to interpret the Bible for himself. With a decided tip of his literary hat to his better known rebel predecessors, Haldor Laxness uses analogy and humor to critique what he sees as misplaced priorities of established organized religions: Protestants (especially Lutherans), Catholics, Muslims, and Jews.
The book is written as the eyewitness report by a young man sent on a mission by the local Lutheran Bishop to investigate the "goings on" at a remote Icelandic parish located by the glacier. "We're asking for a report that's all; don't try to put anything right---that's our business in the Ministry of Ecclesiastical Affairs, " the Bishop says in what later you realize is the first of many ironically funny shots at the literal interpretation of the Bible including the current day favorite, intelligent design. Because of the author's clever analogies that spoof and cut, Under the Glacier is not an easy book to read. Like the Bible that it seeks to parody, you can take it literally; you can read it as pure fable; or, you might read it as a combination of myth and reality. Whatever your response, it is unlikely to be indifferent.
I enjoyed this book.......2005-10-17
This is a very creative book although it is different in its structure than one has come to expect from Laxness. It does not contain the long, articulate descriptive passages found in say, Independent People. It is written in a `script' type format ( I don't know the word that your creative writing teacher would use to describe it) and its prose is sparse although not lacking in the Laxness wit: "Icelanders are not particularly hospitable in the Sagas, and that persisted for a long time; although things have improved since coffee was discovered...".
Although "Glacier" is different from his other works, "Laxness does provide the reader with elements that are found in his other works: an imaginative story, brilliant writing and a wonderful wit. It also contains an entertaining cast of characters that range from the enigmatic to the bizarre.
The language in Glacier, as in his other books, borrows heavily from the Sagas. The translation was done by Magnus Magnusson, KBE, who has provided us with a number of splendid translations of Laxness works, including: AThe Fish Can Sing@, AParadise Reclaimed@, AWorld Light@, AThe Atom Station@, AUnder the Glacier@ and ABread of Life@. We are all indebted to Magnus for allowing us anglophiles to appreciate the genius of Laxness. Magnus was born in Iceland and became the long standing host of the British television show AMastermind@. He was named a Knight of the Britisth Empire in 1989. He was also a prolific writer and translator, also translating several sagas including ANjal=s Saga@ and ALaxdaela Saga@. Those struggling with the prose in `Under the Glacier' should read one or more of these timeless literary treasures.
An Icelander who went up a glacier and came down with ghosts.......2005-07-30
In her introduction, Susan Sontag described Under the Glacier as being a sci fi, comic, dream and philisophical novel. That may be, but to me it was something more like a long ghost story told not around the campfire but in a report. The narrator is sent to a small town on the western edge of Iceland to investigate weird goings-on in the local church. He meets people, interviewing some and just recording the conversations of others. He tries to follow what is happenning around him, sometimes getting it, and sometimes not (which means, as readers of his report, we at times don't know what is happening either). Some parts of the book are very funny, others quite thought-provoking. Although a much easier read, it reminded me of Gass's Omensetter's Luck. My biggest complaint is that at times the translation reads rather opaquely. Laxness chose words and phrases and situations that are obviously important in Icelandic culture. Some explanatory notes at the back of the book (as there are in the Inspector Montalbano mysteries) would help readers who first come into contact with Iceland through this novel.

Jodi Did Not Disappoint Me .......2006-04-03
Another wonderful book about the brothers in Texas. I am anxious to read more of her gentle romances in historical settings.
Harriet Klausner's review is on target.
To Wed in Texas.......2002-12-29
This series was so informational and funny. Please read these in in order. She ( Jodi Thomas ) makes learning about the history of Texas fun. I couldn't put these down til the last book. I'm still finding her other books also very good and funny. Worth rereading over and over. Keepers.
Loved it!.......2000-07-11
If you read the title TO WED IN TEXAS and expect a typical historical Texas romance then you've never read Jodi Thomas' work. The first chapter of this gentle romance will capture you and draw you into a warm, charming, and sometimes harrowing read.
Daniel McLain is a man of God, raising his twin girls in the newly- developed and dangerous town of Jefferson, Texas. When he appeals to his family for help, Daniel expects a family member to arrive and help him. What he doesn't expect is a distant cousin who's travelling companion is "bad luck." Upon arriving on a steamboat in the most unusual way, Karlee learns that although the Civil war is over, there are those who still want to fight, and endanger lives. Pleasing her employer and keeping the three-year-olds safe isn't going to be easy.
Ms. Thomas has written her characters so well that as I read I found instant compassion for Daniel and the girls. My heart went out to the character Karlee and wanted to see her triumph in more ways than one. In some parts, the written environment took me back to the old John Wayne movies and the realistic atmosphere and mood that was portrayed them. Ms. Thomas is an artist of the western love story.
I stayed up all night with this one!.......2000-01-29
This book is a definate read. Daniel has always been one of my favorite brother's, and this book allows you to get a better feel for him as a character. Karlee is so dynamic and brave, yet she's always filled with self-doubt. Watching these two fall in love was such an enjoyable experience. But to avoid confusion, be sure to read, "The Texan's Touch" and "To Kiss a Texan"
Jodi Thomas is synanomous with a good Texas romance.......2000-01-06
With the Civil War just recently over, tensions remain very high in Jefferson, Texas. Preacher Daniel McClain tries to keep the peace between the occupying Union soldiers and the remnants of the former Confederate Army. However, being a widower Daniel needs help to raise his three-year-old twins and asks his deceased wife's aunt to come to Texas.
Instead of arriving herself, the aunt dumps the family's unwanted poor relative Karlee Whitworth on him. Karlee soon becomes a force for good in the town as she handles crisis after crisis with good cheer and aplomb. Soon Karlee falls in love with her host, but he tries to stifle his feelings for Karlee out of respect and guilt for his beloved first wife.
Best selling western romance author Jodie Thomas completes her Texas Brothers trilogy with an interesting Reconstruction Era romance. The story line is filled with action and the return of old favorites from the previous two novels. The lead characters are an intriguing duo, especially the flawed but kind Karlee. Though this tale does never quite attain the level of excitement of the first two books, TO WED IN TEXAS retain the Thomas touch and that means a great time for readers.

Book Description
Gridlinked is a science fiction adventure in the classic, fast-paced, action-packed tradition of Harry Harrison and Poul Anderson, with a dash of cyberpunk and a splash of Ian Fleming added to spice the mix. Cormac is a legendary Earth Central Security agent, the James Bond of a wealthy future where "runcibles" (matter transmitters controlled by AIs) allow interstellar travel in an eye blink throughout the settled worlds of the Polity. Unfortunately Cormac is nearly burnt out, "gridlinked" to the AI net so long that his humanity has begun to drain away. He has to take the cold-turkey cure and shake his addiction to having his brain on the net.Now he must do without just as he's sent to investigate the unique runcible disaster that's wiped out the entire human colony on planet Samarkand in a thirty-megaton explosion. With the runcible out, Cormac must get there by ship, but he has incurred the wrath of a vicious psychopath called Arian Pelter, who now follows him across the galaxy with a terrifying psychotic killer android in tow. And deep beneath Samarkand's surface there are buried mysteries, fiercely guarded. This is fast-moving, edge-of-the-seat entertainment, and a great introduction to the work of one of the most exciting new SF talents in years.

James Bond saves the galaxy.......2007-08-28
I'm sorry, I just don't get it. Science fiction has, haltingly and with lots of recidivism, gotten a little bit beyond superheroes who can outgun/outguess/outfight everybody else in the universe. This book is a throwback. Our hero has no personality; the villain is scary, but of course the good guy drops him in one shot when they finally get together. It's pretty well written (hence the two stars) in between the cliches, but it's ultimately pointless.
Super Reader.......2007-08-04
Ian Cormac is a super agent of sorts. He works hand in hand with the Artificial Intelligence government. A cold, methodical man, he seduces and kills with aplomb, as necessary.
He is linked to the AI personally, and they tell him it is time for a break, to regain his humanity. He resists, but they have a job for him. He is to go and investigate a strange breakdown of an interstellar travel gate.
From earlier incidents, he has a serious enemy, a psychotic killer and his deranged android killing machine called Mr. Crane.
Cormac does gain allies, and there are androids on his side, but he discovers something even worse in his investigations.
You forgot to write an ending!!!.......2007-07-24
This book was a solid four stars until the last couple of chapters. If you've ever read a book and then gotten suspicious as you approached the end, because there didn't seem to be enough pages to wrap things up believably, then you know exactly how the end of this book feels.
I'm not an author, so I don't know how this happens, but maybe the author gets tired of writing and just slams 4 chapters of revelation into a couple of paragraphs and sends it to the editor. Who knows?
But as other reviewers here have said, the subplot of the rebel leader who wants Ian Cormac dead is a little distracting, but tolerable. The main story line is quite interesting. Basically, mankind (and Ian Cormac in particular) is caught up in some sort of struggle/conflict/police action between two very large, and powerful alien beings.
But at the end, you are never really told what was going on between the two beings and what happened. I really thought maybe my book was missing the last chapter or two.
Asher has huge potential. His writing is very readable and enjoyable. As another reviewer mentioned, some of his clever weaponry made the book even more interesting. It is space opera drama in great form - until the ending. Perhaps he will improve the wrap ups and become a good author, but I cannot recommend this one as the ending is too poorly done to leave the reader with satisfaction.
Gridlinked leaves you Gridwinked.......2007-06-29
Read the excellent review by J. McIntyre! Gridlinked, Neil Asher's first novel (a space opera of hard SF dimensions) had a good start but alas, nothing really new. Gridlinked began with a lot of promise (especially after all the hype it received). I found myself skipping some of the dross narrative and the writing was uneven where the plot line jumped around too much. The villain Arian Pelter and the sadistic Mr. Crane (the psychotic Android) where pretty cool yet all of the characters seemed too one dimensional for my taste. Then half way through the book, a new alien entity is introduced which appears as an after thought. The best thing about the book is the action and high-tech wizardry. Though in reality we'll probably living in a new stone age by that time. The book reminded me a lot of Alistair Reynold's Revelation Space saga. Even though the book does have a lot of shortcomings it's a fun read and one that makes you look at the future with a jaundiced eye. Glad I'll be long gone when and if this comes to light.
Promising first novel.......2007-04-09
Gridlinked is a slow starter but ends up a fast burn in the second half. I was close to putting the book down after 100 or so pages, as the story line was confusing & the writing somewhat uneven. Once the real action started, I was hooked, & stayed hooked until the final page. Good complex story, solid treatment of good/bad guys and bad/good guys. Fans of cyber thrillers will enjoy this book, & I look forward to watching Mr. Asher develop as a writer.

What a Great Read for Christian Parents!.......2007-07-06
I enjoyed this book, because it showed me how to make sure that my precious children are truly saved. There are a lot of good examples on how to teach each of the 10 commandments in it, as well. This book will help you raise your children in the nurture and admonition of the Lord. I highly recommend it.
Great book!.......2007-03-09
This is a great book for parents who wish to bring up their kids biblically! The problem with children is because of Syndrome Infantile Negativity (S.I.N.) and not because of ADHD. The book is clear and concise, and offers a lot of real examples that Ray has applied in his own family. If you want to train your children in a godly way, buy this book!
FABULOUS! Eye-Opening and Very Convicting!!!.......2006-04-19
Are you concerned about your children's salvation? This is the book for you! Having children myself, I went searching for a book that would address whether their salvation was, in fact, true. Of course, while God only knows their hearts, I still felt that I would not be fulfilling my parental duty if I didn't do my homework.
I found this book very easy-to-understand, profound and convicting! There is a chapter at the end of the book that addresses the outside influences we allow into our childrens' lives. This was painful to read as I realized how subtle the enemy is, and how easy it is to be conformed to the standards of the world.
I believe this will change your whole way of witnessing to your own children. I've already begun using this book as a guideline on talking to my children about their salvation.
awesome book.......2006-03-12
I read this book and handed it out like candy to my friends. He explains that it's not a guarantee to keep your children, but adds that we need to balance the love of Christ and the Fear of God so that they know they will still be accountable to someone even when no body is looking-because God is. He stresses and gives practical examples on the 10 commandments to teach our children about them and how to remember them. Another book to read to children is The Way of the Master for Children. Good beginning for preschool and the rest of the book to give children a firm foundation why they believe in God. Both awesome books!
Great read!.......2005-10-10
If you are interested in learning how to give your child all of the gospel story, this is the book for you. Not to mention, you will learn from it yourself. I would recommend it to anyone who has children.

Great Flavors and taste.......2005-05-15
Funny, great insight on the ladder of chefdom and the hard work effort while learning that made this chef a real master, recipes have simple steps and are full of flavor, bravo chef leonard for such a book
Fun and Tasty.......2005-05-13
Yes no hard cover, no photos, no ego been strutted across the pages, instead simple and tasty recipes I have cooked at least 6 of them.
More importantly is the enjoyable reading of a chef who worked hard to climb the ladder and is not ashamed to tell about the trials and tribulations in a fun and learning way.
Great reading and a must for any student who wants to be a chef of great status!
In Good taste.......2005-05-13
There are so many cookbooks but this one is more than that.
True stories of a person who started at the bottom and worked his way up to become what is called a certified master chef meaning a earned title based on skills.
Funny stories, a message in each one as the chef grew up and learned from mistakes, tasty recipes but most of all great tales with a real and honest insight not a glitz facade!
A real taste.......2005-03-01
Chef Leonards book provides an inside view of the trials and tribulations of a chef and what goes on behind the scenes and inner workings of the culinary world. This "biography" of a chef who went from dishwasher to chef extrordinaire will inspire all of us who are lovers of cooking and dining. A must read for any curious epicurean or for those of us who are taking the leap into the culinary world.

ITALY OFF THE EATEN PATH: A Culinary Journey to the Old Country’s Hidden Treasures (Lyons)
G. Franco Romagnoli and Gwen Romagnoli
The bestselling author and television chef presents a succulent food travelogue of his homeland.
Rome native G. Franco Romagnoli first introduced American television viewers to Italian cooking back in the 1960s, when he starred with his late wife Margaret on two television series for PBS-TV, including The Romagnolis’ Table. The first cooking show of its kind led the couple to national fame, during which they wrote nine cookbooks and toured the world giving cooking demonstrations and opened several restaurants in the Boston area.
Romagnoli continued to teach cooking and to write articles for The New York Times, The Boston Globe, Gourmet magazine, Food & Wine, and The Atlantic Monthly. He remarried in 1998 and now he and his wife Gwen present an unforgettable tour of Italy’s lesser known, secret jewels: the mountain streams of Val d’Aosta, which provide beauty as well as savory trout; Tuscany serves up the cannelloni and wild venison of Tuscany; risotto with frogs’ legs from Lake Orta; couscous with capers from Pantelleria; truffles from Alba, as well as cultural history such as the tuna hunting ritual mattanza on the Egadi islands and olive oil pressing in Puglia. Sharing the geography, history, and art of each region as well as the character of its people, the Romagnolis bring little-known Italy to life—and to our tables—with full-color photographs to please travelers, food lovers and armchair dreamers.
G. Franco and Gwen Romagnoli live in Boston.

A must have book for world coin collectors.......2006-09-05
who specialize in gold coins minted prior to 1600. It would have been much better if the photos would have been in color. In todays new coin business and hobby it's essential to communicate not only the basic design of a coin but also it's unique look and that means color and high quality digital pictures. We are learing in the trade that these color photos are an essential part of the business, and students and collectors of coins want research material that also accurately portrays coins as well. Still a necessary book for the collector as well as advanced Numismatic library, let's hope we see a new release that we can all be happy with.
Buy another book........2006-03-07
The book is poorly constructed and lacks a lot of acient middle eastern gold coins. The lack of color also makes me feel that I over paid for this book.
Gold Coins of the World From Ancient Times to The Present.......2003-10-04
Fist of all for 75$ I would have expected the catalogue to be in color not only the cover and the back...
Secondly for Ancient coins such as Greek, Roman & Byzantine, It would have helped if an approximate weight for each coin was included...
No color pictures.......2003-06-11
Fist I would say for 75.00 , I would expect color when it comes to showing gold coins in a hard bound edition. The only color is on the paper cover. The book lacks depth in the largest market for collectors, U.S.A. . Not impressive !

Great book for turning ideas.......2005-06-21
After reading Turning Wood and "Turning" (Taunton's Complete Illustrated Guide to Turning by Richard Raffan), I was ready for some new information. While Turning Boxes" didn't give me any new ideas on how to use the lathe or turning tools specifically, it was packed with many, many photos of boxes Mr. Raffan has turned. This alone will provide me with ideas on what type of profiles to turn and should keep me busy for hours.
The book covered how to turn threaded boxes and hit heavily on how to correctly fit a lid. Mr. Raffan also covered hollowing on end grain which is particularly tricky. A section on finishing gave me some ideas to ponder and the one on off-set turning creates some very unique boxes. There is another section that describes chatter work. And you thought that the tool chatter wouldn't be useful!
If you are looking for a book to learn the basics of turning, I would not recommend this one but "Turning Wood" by Mr. Raffan instead. Buy this one after you get a feel for the lathe and are looking for ideas to inspire your work such as making needles or drill cases.
Excellent box turning book.......1998-12-30
170 pages. Black and White photos with Color photo gallery (20 pages). Excellent book on how to make boxes and many example forms. Step by step instructions with photos on making end-grain boxes, what to consider in designs, and many variations on the basic box (needle cases, earring cases, saturn boxes, mushroom boxes, screw-on lids). Many boxes shown throughout the text and a chapter on forms. The Gallery is a little far out, but interesting. The video is also great.

Book Description
Costume and fashion were a lifelong obsession for James McNeill Whistler (1834-1903). His exquisite depictions of women and the details of their clothing contributed to his career as one of the most accomplished and successfulif controversialartists of the nineteenth century. This lavishly illustrated book focuses on fashion in Whistler's art as a key to understanding his life and work and as a new means of exploring his relationship with women and his portraits of them. The book offers new insights into some of Whistler's most beloved masterpieces in the context of art and fashion in the Victorian period.
Illustrated with paintings, pastels, prints, and drawings by Whistler, the book also presents photographs of his sitters, contemporary costumes, works by other artists of the period, and artifacts from Whistler's studio. These illustrations, with new material drawn from the Centre for Whistler Studies, illuminate the interaction between the artist and the women he portrayed during his fifty years in Paris and Londonmistresses, family members, artists, actresses, aristocrats, and many others.

The Films of Woody Allen (Cambridge Film Classics)
ASIN: 081319041X |
Book Description
For thirty years no American filmmaker has been as prolificor as paradoxicalas Woody Allen. From Play it Again, Sam (1972) to Sweet and Lowdown (1999), Allen has produced an average of one film a year. Yet with each new film he reveals a progressively skeptical attitude toward art.
Merging criticism and biography, Peter Bailey uses Allen's ambivalent views of the artistic enterprise as the key to understanding his entire career. In an exhaustive, jargon-free reading, Bailey demonstrates how Allen's films constitute a debate he is conducting with himself about the capacities of art to improve the quality of life and about the resulting price exacted upon artists and those around them. Bailey identifies the underlying tension between reality and image in film after film, demonstrating how the resolution of this conflict in each movie is revisited, critiqued, and reconfigured in the next.
Customer Reviews:
A must-have for Woody's fans.......2004-01-24
I have read several books on Woody Allen and this is the most brilliant so far. Those who are tired of hearing about his squabble with Mia Farrow will be relieved to find that the author concentrates on his work and only mentions facts of Woody Allen's life that are relevant to his films. The book painstakingly analyzes the psychological and philosophical undercurrents in Woody's work, and especially delves into the issue as to whether art cand lend coherence to an otherwise contingent and random life. It'll help you see Woody's films from a broader standpoint but also set you brooding over your life as well.
An interesting perspective on Allen's major films.......2003-12-04
Peter Baily establishes his thesis that a primary thread running through many of Allen's major films is an examination of the tension between art and life and the struggle of the artist to disengage from the real world to unleash the creative juices. Citing examples from many of my favorite Allen films and following through on his major premise Baily delivers a fine book that challenged me to look at this films from a new perspective. I highly recommend this to fans of Woody Allen. I am cueing up my DVD copy of Hannah and her Sisters as soon as I log off.
Deconstructing Woody.......2001-06-07
If you've ever wanted to reach right into the movie screen, shake one of Woody Allen's characters by the shirt collar, and say, "Snap out of it, bub," here's a book for you. Peter J. Bailey's The Reluctant Film Art of Woody Allen offers a fascinating, crystalline analysis of one of the most vexing questions to dog three generations of Woody Allen characters: Is the fictional world of art--especially film art--more a help or a hindrance in our difficult lives?
Bailey, an English professor at St. Lawrence University in Canton, N.Y., demonstrated his gift for making sense of challenging contemporary literary art with Reading Stanley Elkin in the mid-'80s. In The Reluctant Film Art of Woody Allen, he takes on a more readily accessible subject but does not hold back any of the tremendous critical insight at his command. The result is a book both for serious film buffs--that is, buffs of serious film (a subjective distinction taken up in this book)--and for film scholars alike. I was impressed by Bailey's scholarly precision, yet after reading the first couple of chapters I wanted to dash out and rent Stardust Memories, Manhattan, and several other signature Woody Allen flicks. This book has actually made watching his movies a more intellectually stimulating experience without killing the comic moments so abundant in them.
A college English instructor myself, I appreciate the challenge of leading a critical investigation of something fun and entertaining without making that subject, well, less fun and entertaining. Bailey succeeds admirably with this book, mainly because he never puts Allen on a pedestal. The author is a fan, to be sure, as indicated by his generous praise for what Allen does well--and has done well at a pace of roughly one film a year since 1972. This book's thesis, however, delves more deeply into a particularly compelling set of questions at the core of most of Allen's films: What do they say about the role of art in our lives? Is it a redeeming social force or merely a pleasant diversion from life's suffering? Are Woody Allen's films art or merely pleasant, entertaining diversions?
Bailey combines his own convincing interpretations of Allen's film work with previously reported comments from Allen on these questions to show not only how equivocal Woody Allen movies are on the matter of art's benefits and costs, but how central a theme this equivocating is in those movies. To his great credit--and unlike many scholarly investigations of film and literary art--Bailey avoids overbearing suggestions that HIS interpretations are REALLY what Allen's films are all about. Rather, the author has found a thread running through Allen's work that he holds up to the light--a light that has lingered too long on the personality of Woody Allen and the attending tabloid drama. This more illuminating thread--the vexed relationship of art to life and the difficulty of reconciling the two, both in art and in life--is of such enormous importance in the broader conversation of American popular culture that the absence of details on Allen's personal travails reads as a virtue in Bailey's book.
While Woody Allen fans will definitely find The Reluctant Film Art of Woody Allen most enjoyable and accessible, any moviegoer who has ever contemplated what distinguishes the cinematic good and bad from the ugly will find this book thought-provoking, perhaps at times profound. Ultimately, this is not a portrait of a filmmaker so much as the study of an intriguing film mind at work--and a snapshot of a possible film legend as a work-in-progress.
