Book Description

Between 1982 and 1989, Pelafina H. Lièvre sent her son, Johnny Truant, a series of letters from The Three Attic Whalestoe Institute, a psychiatric facility in Ohio where she spent the final years of her life. Beautiful, heartfelt, and tragic, this correspondence reveals the powerful and deeply moving relationship between a brilliant though mentally ill mother and the precocious, gifted young son she never ceases to love.

Originally contained within the monumental House of Leaves, this collection stands alone as a stunning portrait of mother and child. It is presented here along with a foreword by Walden D. Wyhrta and eleven previously unavailable letters.

An awesome complimentary to House of Leaves. This book really helps you to get inside of Johnny's head and know why he is the way he is... if that makes sense. If you have read House and need more, try this out.

4 out of 5 stars Whalestoe Letters.......2007-01-19

I love this. Not only are the original letters from House of Leaves included, but new ones are added giving better background and understanding of the House of Leaves character. A very good investment, glad it was made into a seperate book.

Never read anything like this, much like I've never read anything like House of Leaves, much like I've never read anything like Only Revolutions. Conclusion: Mark Z. Danielewski is the best writer going today.

4 out of 5 stars Nothing so black... as the inferno of a human mind........2006-09-06

One of the most compelling parts of the brilliant "House of Leaves" was Appendix II, Part E -- the "Whalestoe Letters."

But is it worth getting the novella, if the original book already has the "Whalestoe Letters"? Yes, frankly -- Mark Z. Danielewski did a brilliant job expanding the letters and characters in the original appendix, where a mother's devotion turns out to be the tip of the iceberg.

The book compiles the letters from Pelafina H. Lièvre to her son Johnny Truant. Pelafina is in the Whalestoe psychiatric clinic, although at first it isn't clear why. She sends doting, poetic, adoring letters to her young son, who is being raised by an abusive foster father.

But when Pelafina stops taking her medication, her mental state deteriorates. She becomes paranoid, hallucinates, and sends bizarre nonsensical letters and limericks to Johnny (including a jumbled one that is made up almost entirely of "forgive me"). But even when the doctors manage to pull her back from the brink, Pelafina's desperation consumes her.

"Letters" books are usually disasters, because the authors cannot put enough feeling and energy into the letters. Mark Z. Danielewski is definitely the exception. This one-sided correspondence is enough to inspire plenty of pity and horror -- all the worse because this sort of thing happens in real life.

Danielewski plots the story almost like a mystery, dropping little hints during Pelafina's more sane moments. At first she seems normal if a bit overdevoted. But as she spirals into madness, we see just how mad she is, the things she has done before her institutionalization, and the terrible event which caused Johnny's father to have her locked up.

This edition is somewhat different from the original "Whalestoe Letters," since Danielewski added in some new letters. These flesh out both Johnny and Pelafina, and give background to her mental illness.

Danielewski is brilliant not only with plots, but characters as well -- Pelafina is the proof. She seems normal at first, but her chilling insanity comes out in little spurts until we find out what she did. And yet, you can't help feeling sorry for her, no matter how disturbing her manic love for Johnny is.

Disturbing and bittersweet, the "Whalestoe Letters" are a good accompaniment to "House of Leaves," and a good illustration of just what a great writer Danielewski is.

I found this book to be very enlightening. I would have preferred to read this book along the same time as HOUSE of Leaves. I think that it complemented the other book so well. It is a very short read though.

5 out of 5 stars "a thin line between love and hate".......2006-06-28

This book was so intense it seemed real. No kidding, there were certain scenes where i felt my throat constrict. This appears to be Julia James' signature style. She knows exactly how to make her characters overflow with strong emotion. Rihanna and Alexis are perfect examples. They are like two fated bulls in a ring. Their hate for one another is as fierce as their love. An excellent read! I only regret that it had to end so quickly.

4 out of 5 stars Loved It!.......2006-03-22

Now, "Baby of Shame" as a title was enough to make my friends burst into laughter (romance-hating infidels!) but I really enjoyed this story. it was typical Harlequin Presents, but I really felt these two characters as they sorted out their very tangled lives. Their emnity towards each other was so strong, I had to put the book down for a few moments and remind myself this wasn't real! And as they began to unfurl all the misunderstandings that had led them to the shouting, I saw an arc, development of character, and give and take on both sides. Plus, although there was a child central to the character, he never became a precocious little fount of platitiudes, over-run with cuteness. I liked this book, a lot.

1 out of 5 stars It's my own fault.......2006-02-28

20-something young woman who's possibly about to lose custody of her son to Social Services gets knocked over by car & is badly injured; flashback to her one-night stand with handsome Greek tycoon who could have saved her father's company (if she'd only talked to him instead of shagging him, that is). Handsome tycoon is contacted by Social Services to claim his son (much to his shock) thereby setting up predictable "I-hate-but-I-still-want-you" on a Greek island.

It's my fault these books make money. I buy a book with a title like, "Baby of Shame" and expect a half-way decent read...well, then, if the book stinks, like this one does, I have no one to blame but meself. Except, possibly, the Harlequin imprint. After all, I don't know what happened to Julia James. She wrote some good, quite readable stories for Harlequin to begin with, then began to be REALLY bad; like this one. I really don't know why the editor let this one get away. It reads like a first draft, and the story is SO flimsy as to make (me) cringe. Please, don't bother!!

          –Science Fiction Age

World War II has evolved into decades of epic struggles and rebellions targeting the aliens known as the Race. As the 1960s begin, one of Earth’s great powers launches a nuclear strike against the Race’s colonization fleet–and the merciless invaders find themselves confronting a far more complex and challenging species than any they have encountered before. Ultimately, only superior firepower may keep Earth under the Empire’s control–or it may destroy the world. While uprisings and aftershocks of war shake the planet, one nation plots a stunning counterattack . . .

“Hugo winner Turtledove lives up to his billing as the grand master of alternative history. . . . This novel is altogether excellent.”

World War II. The great powers were at one another's throats. Armiesclashed across rolling countryside. Air forces sowed death from above. Then, in 1942, everything changed. A new front opened in World WarII—when an alien race attacked the Earth...

In his extraordinary alternate-history epic, Harry Turtledove createdthe acclaimed Worldwar saga. Now, in the Colonization series, what began as war has evolved into decades of epic struggles andrebellions erupting against the invaders known as the Race.

As the 1960s begins, one of the great powers explodes a nuclear strikeagainst the Race's colonization fleet. As she did a generation before,Germany goes to war over Poland, this time against the Race.Retaliation is swift and deadly, leaving much of the Third Reich in ruins. TheUnited States has used its fast-developing military technology to lockthe invaders into a standoff. And in China, the ragtag revolutionaryarmy of Mao Tse-tung—armed with Russian-supplied, German-madeweapons—may prove the Race's most intractable enemy of all.

On Earth, the alien invaders find themselves confronting a far morecomplex and difficult species than any they have encountered before. From the hatred between the Jews and the Deutsche to the irrepressibleinventiveness of human technology, the reptilian invaders realize theyhave met creatures that cannot be tamed. Ultimately, only superiorfirepower may keep Earth under the Empire's control-or may destroy theworld.

Despite its military superiority, the Race still fears itunderestimates its foes. While uprisings and aftershocks of war shake the planet, while the Race's troops are undermined by ginger addiction, one nation plotsa stunning counterattack.

With its sprawling cast of characters, startling plot twists, anduncanny sense of history, Colonization: Aftershocks is anothermarvelous achievement from Harry Turtledove—the author USA Todaycalls "the leading author of alternate history."

3 out of 5 stars oh but this is not the end........2005-09-14

Just when you hoped for some closure, the book is left with an ending that clearly leaves open an new series. The new series will revolve around the attack on the lizards home planet. So if you pick up this book thinking it will come to an end, good luck. Absolutely no resolution to be had. sorry.

3 out of 5 stars Marathon series begins to stumble........2005-08-14

The quality of this SEVENTH book of the series is definately below that of the first six books - mainly due to the author apparently running out of believable material and unique situations for his characters, and having to use too many gimmicks in order to fill up the 600+ paperback pages. For example, how do so many of the characters end up at some point in Edmonton, Canada? And how many times can Sam Yeager foil assasination attempts by trained killers?

Another problem is the lack of attention "The Race" (and humans for that matter) pay to the radialogical after-effects of the nuclear war that ensued in book six... after all, it was the fear of "nuclear contamination" that had supposedely kept the lizards from using their nuclear advantage in the first place. When so little side-effects of contamination occur, it makes the whole series seem less believable. Yes, this contamination is sometimes mentioned - but it is severly downplayed... I can remember what a stir the Chernobyl disaster caused in real life, and I see probably less attention given to the problem of the exchange of 100's of nukes (fission or fusion - it never is really explained).

Furthermore, the book includes even more than the normal amount of "review" material, with character's situations being long-windedly over-explained.

At this point, I want to give the author some credit for fixing some mistakes he made in previous books. For example, a number of times in previous books, he referred to the "sandstone" architecture of Jerusalem; and in this book he correctly refers to the "limestone" architecture.

Also, I credit the author with being able to do as well as he did over the course of seven books - it is no wonder he begins to run out of gas here.

I give this book 2.5 stars, rounded up to 3.

I'd previously obtained a copy of the last book in the series (Homeward Bound); otherwise I'd probably have taken a break from the series at this point (never to return?). However, I'm going to make a mad dash thru that book, in an attempt to cross the finish line in this marathon series. And, I'm hoping that enough time elapses in the storyline, so that there are a lot of new characters and situations in the eighth book.

          4 out of 5 stars Believable.......2004-11-18

Which is about the highest praise alternative history can get, I believe. Turtledove creates an alternate universe that seems completely real. If aliens had invaded in WWII, this is what we would be presented with, in the 40s and the 60s. By using very personal characters, with famous, infamous, and unknown historical personages. Turtledove makes excellent use of his strong background in history. He has a creative writing style that pulls the reader in, with many unexpected results, and few flat characters. Those that are, are flat for a reason- lizards culturally evolve slowly.

There are some weaknesses in Turtledove's writing style as well. He has the same flaw as Tolkein- weak female characters. Perhaps it is a result of his gender, but I began to realize that the only involved females he imagined were those of an alien race, or those who were raised by an alien race- thus not truly human females. He seems to skip over getting in the minds of women, as he does so well with men, which results in somewhat half of the story being told.

The other major flaw is Turtledove's treatment of Christianity. It is sad that he merely apes this inaccuracy which is so typical of the science fiction genre. In the future, if religion exists at all, it is certainly not the Christian religion- or if so, a pale imitation of it. This flaw is most prevalent in this latest work of the series, where Turtledove speaks of the Muslims and Jews to a great extent, and how they follow what the believe, but the Christians are not willing to die for their beliefs, nor commit to worshipping one God. This is a grave departure from historical (or present) reality, where over half of the Christians in the world live in the 2/3rds world, the largest religion in the world is Christianity, and more have died for their Christian faith in the 20th century than the previous 19 combined.

Despite these two blemishes, it is a very enjoyable work. If one has read through the entire series till now, you definitely want to complete it. If not, you want to read the other books before coming to this one. Though the book is understandable on it's own, it doesn't make as much sense by itself. It is a fitting near-ending (2nd to the last), where most storylines are resolved, but the biggest and largest only hinted at till the end of the book, to be finally resolved later in the 21st century.

          1 out of 5 stars Ugh, finally it's over.......2004-09-04

When it started, this was a pretty good series. But every book has gone downhill, and this one is no exception. Aside from the stale characters, the repetitive situations, and the ENDLESS blabbering about minor plot points, my biggest problem has always been the central character: Sam Yeager. He is not supposed to be an anti-hero or a farcical character, yet he is the most loathsome central hero I've ever seen. Stupid, vain, dishonest, treasonous...and every third thought has to do with baseball. Enough! After 5,387 references to minor league baseball, I never want to watch the game again. If his wife-stealing and betrayals are the mark of a true hero, I wonder about Harry Turtledove.

Anyway, this book is dull, dull, dull. At least in the fifth one, there were 5 pages of war after 450 pages of talking. This one doesn't even give you a pay-off. Turtledove is a fading star; judging by the huge quantity and low quality of his works past the mid-90s, I'm not even sure he is writing his own stuff anymore.

My suggestion: Don't bother. Read something exciting and somewhat plausible, like "Cryptonomicon".

3 out of 5 stars Good enough, but becoming old.......2004-06-11

If you have made it all the way to this seventh book you are probably aware of Turtledove's writing style. It can become tedious with constant and useless repetitions about the Earth being too cold for the Lizards, ginger being a drug the lizards like, and Jews being mad at the Nazis. After the first couple of chapters you will become sick of it...but it has been like that since the first book.
Luckily this redundance is overshadowed by an intersting plot that develops the changing human (and Lizard) societies. Thus ginger smuggling becomes an important part of the book, but it becomes rather tedious toward the end.
Since the book is very redundant, lots of lines can be skipped, making the reading faster and enjoying the actual plot and not just fluffing. It is pleasant enough and has enough intrigue to keep one reading and if you have read all the other books of the series, you should definetly give Aftershocks a try. Bewarned though that Turtledove's writing has not changed and the story is starting to become old even if it remains intersting.

I read Dignity Beyond Death soon after my mother died. It was comforting to know that her final journey in this life was met with the caring, sensitive and meaningful ritual of Tahara. The dignity and spirituality of the process was in keeping with how she lived her life. Rochel Berman has given us a gift by sharing with us the world of Tahara where the final act of kindness occurs from one human being to another.

5 out of 5 stars Very Informative and eye opening.......2005-06-22

After reading this book, I now understand how special the Jewish preparation for burial is. This is the first book I have ever seen that not only gives information on what the preparation for Jewish burial entails, but also there are several personal, moving accounts from people who are performing the Jewish preparation for burial, and from people who decided to give their deceased a proper Jewish burial. The book is easy reading. I found that this book comes across appealing to all groups in the Jewish people. Its a great source of information for all.

5 out of 5 stars memorable and informative for Jews and gentiles alike.......2005-05-23

Dignity Beyond Death is a passionate and deeply informed study of one of the most ancient and significant rituals of Jewish practice. Yet the purification (tahara) of the dead before burial by volunteer members of the community (the Hevra Kadisha), while perhaps known in principle, has hardly received the attention it deserves. Tahara performs a dual function. The ritual insists on the dignity of a person after death; it also sustains the spiritual bond between the living and the dead for those who dedicate themselves to this task and it comforts the mourners in the most difficult of times to know how much selfless care is bestowed upon their loved ones. Berman's extensive interviews introduces a variety of wide-ranging voices across the spectrum of traditional Judaism, while her detailed explanations enrich our knowledge of the intricate procedures and the reasons behind them. Of special interest are the chapters on the Holocaust, the aftermath of terrorist bombings in Israel, and what followed the catastrophic events of 9/11. These take the reader beyond everyday practice to a deeper understanding of the value of Tahara in times of disaster to honor, as far as it is or was possible, the worth and integrity of every human being. Written in a lively and engaging style by one whose authority is drawn from long-time experience, this book will serve as a standard for a long time to come.

I do a lot of Chinese cooking and have found Millie Chan's cookbook to be superb. Every recipe turns out to be delicious and most are easy to make. I wish this book was back in print as I have cleaned out most of the copies available on E'Bay to send to my friends.

2 out of 5 stars Scale Aircraft Drawings.......2005-07-10

A collection of drawings from various sources, some recent, others very old, some good, others highly innacurate or even downright fictitious! More for the coffee table than the workshop.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent Book,.......2002-04-30

It is an excellent book that will be loved by WW1 airplanes' fans. The drawings are among the best and the most detailed I have seen so far. But this book must be followed by Volume-2 since it doesn't cover all of the familiar WW1 and pre-WW1 planes. Among which I can name that are missing are R.E.P., Deperdussin, Halberstadts and Albatros series "C" (C-1 to C-15).

4 out of 5 stars Well worth the price for WWI airplane fans.......2002-01-16

WW1 aircraft fans will love this book. So many publications only show exterior drawings and photos, whereas this one shows the interior construction in great detail (in most cases). And the drawings are not just something whipped up to create a book, they are professional drawings done over the years by experts, compiled into one handy book. In some cases there is enough detail that I think you could maybe build a full size flying plane, certainly a very detailed model. There are even drawings and photos of some engines and machine guns and bombs. I am currently building a 1:16 scale Salmson 2A2 based in part on the drawings in this book (my model is at: ....... I took the Salmson drawings to Kinko's and had them blown up 300% and they came out beautiful. I previously built a Thomas-Morse Scout, a LeRhone engine and a Marlin machine gun with the help of this book. I plan to some day build uncovered models of the framework and interior details of planes like the Sopwith Camel, based on the drawings in this book.

5 out of 5 stars The best reference of its kind........2001-05-13

This book is a MUST for modelers and enthusiasts of WW1 aircraft. It is the compilation of a half century of drawings featured in Model Airplane News. These drawings are by the best in the business, by such great draftsmen as William Wylam and Joseph Nieto. You'll find details on about 40 aircraft, and several engines and guns. Aircraft details include fuselage and wing cross-sections, struts and strut sockets, rigging, exact longeron and spar measurements, cockpit and control details, markings, etc. Also included are photos and historical information. It's enough information to make your own models from scratch!

                2 out of 5 stars Okay........2006-02-26

I absolutely LOVE the idea of this book, but it left me a bit disappointed. Out of 101 ideas, I only found four or five that I might want to try, which also may just be my personal taste. A couple things bothered me about the book. Some of the stuff just looked cheap and icky. Also, some of the ideas were repeated over and OVER throughout the book but on different items, like a tray a lamp a box, etc. It's all really the same idea, so why does it count for more than one? Just something that disappointed me.

no one is probably more stoked about this book coming out than me! i ordered this book for my sister's birthday and after i got to see it, i had to order one for myself. i did the advance purchase thing so i had to wait for 4 weeks, but other than that, the wait was totally worth it!

my sister is 13 and reads cosmogirl every month and this guy mark evidently has a column in it about making over a girls room. that is how i heard about him. the things that he created in this book are way creative. i never would have thought of them. i made my mom a rug purse already! it is scary to think that someone like Target is going to steal these ideas. at least we get to keep them original to our own style.thanks for the inspirational ideas!!

I love Mark on While You Were Out and saw him on the Tony Danza show...really don't go to dollar stores much but after this book and all the FABULOUS ideas, I'm hooked. The book is amazing and the ideas are fun! I've made tons of gifts for friends and my apartment. Mark is ahead of his time!!!!!

I love buying stuff at the dollar store, so when I saw this book it was on! These projects are not only easy, they're cute too. Mark Montano has the best ideas, and makes it enjoyable for me to do with my children. If you're crafty is a must buy.

                    Book Description

This is the first book to consider all aspects of the life of Agostino Steffani (1654-1728), a composer, diplomat, and bishop. A remarkable figure of the late 17th and early 18th century Europe, Steffani began his career as a composer, musician, and courtier, but his accomplishments brought him high-level positions in the courts of Germany and the Catholic Church. Throughout his diplomatic and ecclesiatical career, Steffani continued to compose chamber music, vocal chamber music, operas, and sacred music--works which inspired Handel and other Baroque composers.
