This is the 5th book I have read by Mr. Goines. While this is not my favorite(Whoreson), this is still an excellent read. I was able to complete the book in 1 day! So often televsion shows and books sugar-coat prison life, this book is so real it makes you believe you are actually serving time with the others. Donald Goines has a way of dragging the reader into each book. It's sad that his collection only has 14 books. I must say he and Zane are neck and neck in the race of becmoing my favorite author!

A real-life look inside the judicial system .......2004-09-21

In this story, like his others, Donald Goines succeeded in painting a clear, vivid, and lively picture of life behind bars from the black man's point of view during that time. If you really take in the message Goines gets across, you'll see it's much more than a man complaining about this, that, the man not giving him a break, etc. Chester (the main character) was fully aware of his crimes and knew he would be punished. The severity, however, is what got to him, and really set the story in motion. The supporting cast Goines brings is terrific; later on in the story Chester and a friend of his befriend a white inmate, and while everything is cool between the three of them, you can see the tension mount when it's time for two of them to go to the parole board and see about their releases. A story this authentic and true can only be told by someone who's either lived it, or has been around it, and Goines more than qualified to do the job.

His own worst enemy.......2004-06-04

Chester Himes, the main character in this book (based on a real life author who wrote about serving time), is caught with a concealed weapon and is sent to jail. While the author goes to great lengths to point out the racial injustice in the penal system the main problem is this man's own behavior. Actually this book shows that crime doesn't pay. In a sense the main character got what he deserved, he killed his wife and got away with it but wound up spending the rest of his life in jail anyway.

I'm not as convinced as some of the other reviewers that this book demonstrates the injustice of the penal system or is a "typical black man's experience". It does demonstrate that what comes around goes around. Chester Himes got what was coming to him.

Quinn Cortez is a confident, sexy, self-made success. He is a shark of an attorney, with the same reputation in the bedroom. But someone is killing his lovers. As the investigation unfolds, four additional murders have the same calling card - smothered and the index finger severed, and all but one is tied to Quinn. It has all the markings of a serial killer - could Quinn be living a double life? After all, he seems to suffer from blackouts at the same time as the killings.

Both Annabelle and Quinn retain the services of a top notch private investigator to insure that the killer of Lulu Vanderlay is caught. Though in her heart she knows that Quinn is innocent, she can't help but wonder... Also in competition for her affections is one of the investigators, Chad George. Outwardly, he is the perfect man, but as Annabelle gets to know Chad and Quinn, she gets to know who is truly the more honorable man.

I did not get the sense that the two had much chemistry; prior to Lulu's funeral, she barely gave him the time of day (she seemed more interested in Chad), then suddenly she is totally hung up on him and they can't leave the hotel room? So much was made of him being a womanizer, but when he made a list of lovers over the last two years, it was single digits... I expected a lot more from a womanizing himbo.

While there is a great deal of suspense, it really does not take a brain surgeon to see the direction the story will take when all is revealed, nor the identity of the killer. And that creepy cousin just gives you the willies. I found that I like the secondary characters better - Jim and Griffin - and I am happy to hear that they will have a story of their own coming to a bookstore soon.

Annabelle Vanderley, smart, born to wealth and privilege, and keeps the Vanderley family business running smoothly. Lulu Vanderley, gorgeous cousin of Annabelle who lived hard, played hard, ended up dead. Wythe Vanderley, Lulu's creepy, lazy stepbrother. Kendall Wells, attorney; Jim Norton, police lieutenant; Chad George, slimy, pompous police sergeant; Griffin Powell, investigator extraordinaire.

It's early spring in Memphis. Lulu invited Quinn to her home to celebrate winning his latest big case. He arrives and finds her dead. He, of course, becomes the prime suspect, even though her date book lists other names many times. He hires his long time friend, Kendall Wells to defend him; a few days later she's dead. Annabelle comes to Memphis to make funeral arrangements and find out who killed her cousin. Annabelle meets Quinn; did he kill Lulu? Can she trust him? They both hire Griffin to investigate the case. It's soon discovered that other former lovers of Quinn's have been killed in the same manner as Lulu and Kendall. Is a serial killer on the loose? Is Quinn being set up? Why? Will Lulu's secret be revealed? Will Annabelle be Quinn's next love interest? Whodunit?????

There are just enough surprises in this story to keep your interest and really keep you guessing whodunit.

Not her best.......2005-07-08

I have read all of Bevery Barton's other books for Zebra & enjoyed them, but I could not get into Quinn Cortez. He is not a likeable hero. The story itself is good, no problems there. The problem for me was Quinn & Annabelle. I personally thought they had no chemistry and I found nothing appealing about Quinn, except that he has good looks. For followers of Beverly Barton it is worth reading but nothing to get exicted over.

Barton gets Better and Better.......2005-06-21

Annabelle Vanderley is 34. Since she was 23 she has been the one to handle all the responsibility in her family. Her fiancee was in an accident and was paralyzed. For the last 11 years she has been alone taking care of him for the 9 years until his death and still taking care of her uncle and his 2 preverted children, Lulu and Wythe. At 28 Lulu is wild and selfish, Wythe is an abuser and even worse. But Annabelle loves her uncle and protects him from the truth about his children.

Quinn Cortez is an attorney. He has come from nothing and from the first uses his brilliant mind for the one with the most money. A judge saved him and turned him around at 16 so he tries to help other young people. He may do good for youngsters needing a hand, but he's not so good on women. Quinn is a lov'm and leav'm sort of guy. The string of broken hearts is long and winding. He may be passionate but he's not compassionate to women. His affairs are legion and so is his reputation. Quinn doesn't make love he just fills physical needs.

Annabelle is summoned to Memphis where Lulu lives. She is shocked to learn Lulu has been murdered, she was found by her latest lover, Quinn. Naturally he is the main suspect. When they meet the unexpected happens. Quinn finds for the first time he has met a woman he can relate to. Annabelle finds him attractive but knows only to well, that the man is a player and he may have killed her cousin.

Both try to hire the same private investigator and thus find themselves joining together to find the murderer. If Annabelle can learn to trust Quinn and overcome the unwanted attraction she feels, maybe they can solve this case. However, suddenly another one of Quinn's lovers is found dead. The police and the PI find 3 other women over the last 2 years who have been killed in the same way. All of them had had affairs with Quinn, and since he has been having black-outs he is not even sure he didn't do it. So how can Annabelle be so sure?

When Annabelle starts an affair with Quinn she puts herself in the path of a psychopath. One who will stop at nothing to make Quinn pay for his free and easy life style. The rage of a woman scorned can cause the most terrible pain. And someone has to pay.

The mix of characters is wonderful and we are assured that Beverly will give each of these new personalities their own story. I look forward to each and every one. Her suspense thrillers just get better and better.

Interesting how most, if not all, the people who give this book a bad review live in Orange County. Very close to where Rick Warren's mega-church is.

Rather than search out the truth, they choose blindness, and rather than OPENING AND READING THEIR BIBLE, they open rick's books instead.

A must read!.......2007-05-19

I read this book right on the heals of reading "The Truth War" by John MacArthur. While MacArthur deals with apostasy and the battle for truth in a historical and general sense, Smith provides a concrete example of how the truth is being warped to accommodate New Age philosophies in the postmodern/emergent movement. I am serving on a Pastor Search Committee dealing with the aftermath of a failed attempt to implement Rick Warren's PDC concepts in our church. "Deceived on Purpose" has provided valuable insight to me as I study the Bible to discern true doctrine from the subtleties of these false teachings. Coming from a New Ager turned Christian, the author has a unique insight into how dangerous the Purpose Driven movement really is.

New Age Leaven.......2007-02-18

This book is excellent. Mr. Smith is called jealous by some reviewers. That is nonsense. He spent the time digging for truth which most Christians DON'T do. You must research the person you are learning from. His book has facts and is not circumstantial. I for one have found out a lot of truth by "testing" everything. That is what we are called to do. People who disagree with Mr. Smith are probably already influenced by this Church Growth Movement. The New Age influence will "tickle the ears."

Robert Schuller and Rick Warren are from the same school "of thought." From what I read, Mr. Smith has a legitimate case here for concern.

New Age is leaven and it is in the Church.

Take It From Someone Who Knows The TRUTH.......2006-11-15

If you're concerned about the way the 'evangelical' church is headed, if you have questions that no one can answer with sufficient Biblical authority, if you question the paraphrased "hippie" style version of the Bible that many are using, quoting, and embracing; then this book is a must.
Warren Smith exposes the Purpose Driven 'phenomenon' back to its source with carefully detailed, indisputable facts. Just because 'everyone' is doing it, doesn't mean it's right or of God. THINK CHRISTIAN, THINK!

This book is such a stretch and ironically a deception in itself. The points made have no substance and are erroneous in conclusions. I don't know what is driving these ideas, other than jealousy, riding the coat tails of a popular book by (failingly) trying to undermine it. Or just hate? Sad.

First, a disclaimer: drinking does not make you cool, and emulating people who drink in order to be cool is a foolish thing to do. I actually saw this book lying on a stand-up comedian's art-deco coffee table on a home-improvement program on the Home and Garden Network, and the cover piqued my interest. I bought it on a whim to discover the book reflects a novel idea, a cocktail recipe book in the guise of a Hollywood classic movie tribute. As someone who enjoys watching classic films and doesn't mind the occasional mixed drink, I was immediately drawn to this creative melding. After all, films of the golden era always had glamorous stars imbibing a smart cocktail to establish a mood or simply as a means to move the plot along.

Author Tobias Steed has an obvious love for old Hollywood and a wellspring of knowledge from which he writes fluidly (pardon the pun) matching classic films with classic cocktails. The presentation is appropriately sleek with silvery duotone, black-and-white print (though honestly the white type can be a bit difficult to read on the field of light gray tone). There is a two-page spread for nearly every drink recipe provided, which includes a photo from which the movie was consumed, a quick synopsis of the film, a relevant quote from the movie, sometimes an interesting factoid about the drink or its salient ingredients and naturally, the ingredients for the cocktail itself. Steed recruited Ben Reed, the manager of the Met Bar in London and the 1997 Cocktail Barman of the Year, to concoct the libations. The resulting recipes are very straightforward.

The author also organizes the cocktails cleverly into four sections - the first on the cocktail hour ("After Office Hours"), then aperitifs and digestifs ("Dinner at Eight"), drinks considered ideal for any occasion ("From Here to Eternity") and inevitably, drinks for the day after the night before ("Remember the Night"). It's all done in quite an entertaining way, and you'll discover trivia like (and see stills of) Bette Davis drinking a Gibson as Margo Channing in "All About Eve", or Rita Hayworth nursing a Rob Roy in "Angels Over Broadway", and Alec Guinness in a tropical bar serving mojitos, of course, in "Our Man in Havana". Steed has pulled together a delightful book, one that is far more creative than a standard cocktail recipe book.

Gorgeous book to delve into the "sophisticated" world of Cocktails. Yes, I know, sophisticated is a dubious description but this book brings to life the glamor of Hollywood in its heydey of movie tycoons and temptress starlets. Hollywood Cocktails is a great book for lovers of both classic cocktails and film. Leafing through the book takes the reader to a time when drinking and Hollywood were two happy-go-lucky friends.

The book starts off with brief introduction and cocktail etiquette pages. These inform the reading without being too stale. Topics include; the basic equipment and types of alcohol, mixes, and garnishes used to make the classic cocktail. With the right equipment and accessories it's time to make some drinks.

The first of the four majors sections of Hollywood Cocktails, After Office Hours covers drinks for after work or before dinner. This section mostly covers the king of all drinks, the Martini and some of the many variations and twists one can use when making this classic. Other drinks include the Bacardi Cocktail, and Champagne Cocktail. The drinks are coupled with classic Hollywood movies that feature scenes involving libation. Some of the movies featured in this section include After Office Hours (1935), The Thin Man (1934), and Casablanca (1942). Feeling good? Let's proceed to dinner.

Dinner at Eight is the next section covering aperitifs and digestifs. This is the longest section of the book covering such popular drinks as the Manhattan, Rusty Nail, Old Fashioned, Whiskey Sour, and Gimlet. Movies include Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (1958), The Seven Year Itch (1955), Pal Joey (1957), and The Big Sleep (1946). The theme here is to offer options to the Martini.

From Here to Eternity, Drinks for all occasions. These are drinks that are a little more light-hearted, fun, or sweet. Here we see such concoctions as the Mint Julep, Planters Punch, and the hang-over-in-a-glass known as the Zombie. Many of the drinks are more complicated, requiring numerous ingredients and some even need a blender. Movies include From Here to Eternity (1953), The Man Who Came to Dinner (1941), and Double Indemnity (1944). Now that you've had all these drinks, what's a person to do?

The final section, Remember Last Night, covers drinks to cure what ails you. These include the Corpse Reviver, Prairie Oyster, and the classic stand by Bloody Mary. If they don't cure the hang over then they will definitely get your day started Movies include Remember Last Night (1935), The Girl Can't Help it (1956), and Underworld (1927).

The book is very stylish and slick in its look and feel. The information is crisp, clear and concise. The drink recipes are easy to follow and understand. The movie stills are great and feature some of the biggest names to ever grace the silver screen. Hollywood Cocktails would make a nice addition to the bookshelf or coffee table. I would suggest taking notes and using the notes in place of the book while behind the bar.

On the down side, I found some of the text hard to read. The silver text on the white background and white text on silver background took away some of the ease of reading. Also there is a major error on page 36 listing the history of Barcardi for a Campari Cocktail.

Hollywood Cocktails is well worth its price for the movie buff or the cocktail aficionado. For those who enjoy both, Hollywood Cocktails is a can't miss. Call up some friends, head down to the video store, rent some classic movies, and have a Hollywood Cocktail party of your own.

Very Disappointing.......2006-05-03

Looks like they took the larger Warman's (2004)(which I have and like a little) and republished much of the same info in a smaller version. I was expecting a significant addition of material. If you need Roseville books: Bassett's Introducing (2001), Bassett's Understanding (2002), Bassett's Prices (2005), Jack and Nancy Bomm - Roseville in all its Splendor (2004). Bassett's prices are close to reality. The Warman's (2004) book has some prices that are low and some that are right on. Many of Huxford's (2001) prices seem to be way too high. If you get the 3 Bassett books and the Bomm book, you have a good core set to use.

UPDATE: The New MOLLRING book, "Roseville Pottery" 11th Ed., copyright 2006, is really good for collectors. Cons: Black and White Pictures. Pros: Updated Prices, concise reference, very comprehensive. A must have book for Roseville collectors. Dave.

Great Beginners Painting Book.......2003-10-28

Priscilla Hauser although a very talented painter with many years of experience, is still able to put herself in the position of the beginner. Each technique or preparation is fully explained in easy to understand terms. The basis for folk art painting or tole painting is mastering different paint strokes to enable the painter to achieve the desired results quickly and effeciently, and these strokes are demonstrated and explained fully. The author also includes photos of what an inaccurate stroke would look like.
The best part is the patterns and step by step instructions that will excite the beginner and entice them into trying the world of painting!!
This book is an excellent reference and teaching guide that even the most timid of beginners could feel confident they would achieve a measure of success immediately!!! Of course as with all things, the individuals style of painting will change and develop as they practice their skills, but when they look back they will always prize this book that guided them so well!!

WOW- wonderful book!.......2002-02-06

I really enjoyed the harmony of Kelly Hoppen's book. I had never thought how the combination of different textures could make a room so interesting but it works! I found the pictures tranquil and inspiring, and would recommend the book to anyone who wants to take their design to a higher level (and definitely with minimal clutter!). The only strange aspect was her keen devotion to "wenge wood" - whatever that may be!

This is a very beautifully edited book of design for today and a timeless look into the future of interior design. Although this book is primarilly focused on residential interiors, the simplicity of detail and design presents it also as being applicable to commercial design.

This book is packed with innovative ideas for simple paint makeovers. I normally do not involve myself with painting tasks and even my own projects turned out nicely.
The only thing that might have helped is more of an explaination on what kind of and where to purchase some of the paints and quality brushes.
This is a BUY book. It would make a wonderful gift for people who like to work with there hands around the home.

This is a wonderful book with a lot of different projects, techniques and styles. It is great for anyone wanting to add special touches and effects to their home.

The book starts out overview of materials including color photos of all the tools you will need. There is also guide to mixing paints and a great chart on various materials for painting. There are many wonderful effects that can be achieved by adding your own pigments or otherwise modifying standard off the shelf paints. Numerous techniques follow including colorwashing, dry brushing, rubbing off, sponging, graining, aging, stippling, combing, stucco, embossing, stenciling, stamping and creating a few stone finishes. There are also instructions for painting on glass and using masks or resists such as wax.

Over 25 projects are included for walls, floors, windows, furniture and accessories as well. Some projects include striped Greek vases, checkerboard wall, slot-machine counter front, and colorwashed flowers, daisy-strewn floorboards, cork-tile games floor, and a mosaic border. My favorite projects were the whimsical window frame, fossil tabletop and a beautiful Japanese style fabric screen. There are also some great design motifs such as shells, artichokes, and boats. Conveniently, small templates, which you can enlarge, are included for all the projects.

Most of the projects use latex or acrylic paint, only a few use oils. Step-by-step directions are given for each of these techniques or projects. Close-up photos show each technique in a few different colors and recipes are given for each one. Some of the effects and projects have pictures of finished rooms or objects done with them.

Almost all of the techniques here, and more, are also covered in Chronicle's companion book, Paint Recipes. What sets this book apart is that it is project oriented, focusing on the application of the recipes to the many decorative projects I've described. This is a great source of technical know how and artistic inspiration.

5* Plus - Essential reading for any graphic designer.......2005-08-17

I am a great lover of the written word and adore books, in any shape or form. I have been part of the graphic design/print/typography industry for over 20 years and now share the knowledge I have acquired in education. But I still want to learn more and consequently I am always on the look out for graphic design books that entice me to look further. This book is one of those - it encouraged me to go online to find out more. Simple, clear, concise, easy to read, well laid out. In fact, something I would NEVER have dreamed of doing before to any book - I found myself writing additional notes on the pages where I found out more fascinating information. Exciting and inspiring. Would buy again and definitely encourage anyone wanting to learn more about the history of graphic design to buy it. I believe it is a must-have.

Heller is, as we all know by now, the preeminent graphic design writer of our times. This work displays the history of graphic design in simple, bulleted lists arranged by category in a chronoligcal arrangement that is as elegant as it is simple: each year gets its own spread (though earlier , sparses, years are two-to-a-spread), with reproductions of work from the year and stats on important developments in design, illustration, photo, and more, as well as the people who are responsible for such work.

Not a book to be read all at once, but to be enjoyed sporadically, leafed through, glanced through before bed... a must-have for the design history enthusiast.

Mystery Jim.......2005-06-23

I was a kid about 10 years old when Jim Reeves died. Even then I loved Jims music and have always been more than a little curious about finding out more about his life, but knowledge of Jim seems to be more elusive today than ever, this book notwithstanding. I find it really incredible that no one bothered to write a biography about someone as well known and loved as Jim until almost 35 years after his death. It's almost like, what's the point now?...Even more strange, I remember in the 70's and 80's when a string of movies about entertainers were being made - Buddy Holly, Loretta Lynn, Patsy Cline, Richie Valens, I kept thinking anytime now we'll finally get to see a long-awaited movie about Jim........Jim's popularity and career easily eclipsed all, or near all, of them and yet, as of 2005, hollywood has remained stone silent on Jim to this day. Go to www.Biography.com where TV-biographys are made for the History channel and A & E. You'll find all you want to know about Patsy Cline, Loretta Lynn, Buddy Holly, and many many lesser knowns and complete unknowns but you won't find Jim Reeves. For the life of me I don't understand it. It's as if there has been a coordinated effort to erase Jim from history ! Could Jim have had THAT many enemies or have I simply overestimated his vocal quality and popularity all these years ? Hasn't he been in the Country Music Hall of Fame for over 30 years ?

About this book - I am not criticizing it in any way - I haven't read it yet, hence the average 3 stars. I do complement it just for having been written, albeit 3 decades late.

A book about the real Jim Reeves, Good and Bad.......2002-06-24

I was reluctant to write a review about this book because there were so many comments by Jim Reeves fans that depicted this book as a horrible distortion of the real Jim Reeves.
Well, I have read many articles about Jim Reeves and I have come to the same conclusion that the author, Michael Streissguth, concludes in this book.
Jim was a very talented singer, performer, business man, and yet like so many other celebrities, he had his other side of life.
Jim, at times, could be arrogant, obnoxious, mean and downright vulgar when dealing with other people.
There is no bigger fan of Jim Reeves than I, but this book did not make me hate him or even diminision my love for the man and his music.
The author did an excellent job of describing how talented, loved and respected Jim was and yet at the same time he pointed out his weakness in dealing with his peers.
This is an excellent book for fans of Jim and no one will appreciate him less because the author told the entire story of this wonderful singer and performer.

Good research and writing about a great singer.......2002-06-13

I didn't realize exactly how world-famous Jim Reeves was until I read this book. It's a good depiction of his rise to fame. I don't know enough about his personality to comment on the accuracy of how he's portrayed here. I'm surprised that those close to him refused to comment. Faron Young's family and friends are being quite helpful in my research for his biography, and I'd expect that of anyone who wants an accurate biography. I've always liked the music of Jim Reeves. His enunciation impresses me-- unlike most singers who sound lazy by running words together. Of special note with this book is a 6-song CD as part of the package.

First In-Depth Reeves Biography.......2001-10-06

Considering his prominent status in country music history, it is surprising that this is the first in-depth biography of Jim Reeves. A biography on Reeves seems a natural progression for the author Streissguth, who had previously put out a book on Eddy Arnold Pioneer of the Nashville Sound). Reeves and Arnold were very similar musically: easy listening music marketed to a country audience, with Reeves rising to popularity in the early `50s - about a decade after Arnold. As revealed in this book, however, Reeves certainly did not possess a temperament similar to the easy going Arnold (more on that later).

Our story begins with an overly scholarly analysis of the Reeves ancestry. The author looks at the family tree from their arrival in this country in the 1600s through Jim's birth in 1923 in Texas. The book picks up as we progress through Reeves' destitute youth (the youngest of eight children raised by his siblings and widowed mother in a two-bedroom sharecropper's house) and his six-year career as a minor league ballplayer. Once the author moves into Jim's career as a disc jockey and popular musician, the book becomes enthralling.

Streissguth effectively conveys the contradictions in Reeves, the man. Known as Gentleman Jim for his polite demeanor and smooth voice, Reeves had a hot temper which made him a terror in the recording studios and, occasionally, on stage - when touring conditions were deemed less than acceptable (such as his overbooked tour of Ireland). He was loyal to his friends though and often turned over all of the earnings from a club date to his backup musicians when they were underpaid by the promoter. Reeves also tended towards impatience - a quality which probably contributed to his death in a plane crash at the age of 40 (flying his plane during a horrendous storm when he should have waited for it to pass).

Lurking in the background throughout this story and even more fascinating is Reeves' wife Mary. The reader learns that Jim cheated on Mary throughout their marriage. For whatever reasons, she choose to overlook this indescretion and it never
appeared to affect her devotion to him. Also discussed is Mary's effectiveness as Jim's manager, particularly after his death. She was instrumental in the regular reissues of Reeves' recordings (usually demo vocals overdubbed with new instrumentation) which charted prominently for over ten years after his death - a posthumous career unparalleled in music history even by Elvis Presley.

The inside back jacket of the book includes a 6-song CD of some of Reeves' biggest hits like "Four Walls" and "He'll Have To Go." This bonus provides a good tease that will leave you wanting to obtain a more thorough collection of Reeves' music.
The book itself, however, is the only Jim Reeves biography you'll ever need to read. It's an eventually compelling look at a complex individual.
