Book Description

Connie Ramos, a woman in her mid-thirties, has been declared insane. But Connie is overwhelmingly sane, merely tuned to the future, and able to communicate with the year 2137. Future society tour.

This is just a fairly average science fiction novel, and in a few ways, it could have been done (and was done) in the 19th century, among others. e.g. Spence, etc.

A woman gets transported to a future and experiences a female dominated society, and a bad one. Plenty of others you could read before this one.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Utopian Text.......2007-01-15

This story resonates with anyone who enjoyed the message in Egalia's Daughter's or even the YA book, The Giver. It is not for the casual reader, as the time travel takes a bit to follow, but the emotive content is so superior, and the societal messages so clear, I think everyone should read this book at some point in his/her life. It is now one of my favorites, and the craft is so excellent, even a creative writer would love to examine its construction. A wonderful classic.

4 out of 5 stars What Might Be: A Worthwhile Fantasy in Time.......2007-01-02

I am a great fan of Marge Piercy's poetry - her skill at using simple and everyday language to capture everyday scenes and sensibilities in the inner and outer lives of strong women, and to shine upon them a sublime literary light - and so it was not difficult to convince me to break out of my usual reading, decidedly not science fiction, to spend time with this "time-traveling novel." That play on words, mind you, is quite intentional. I soon sensed, within the first pages, that this is the kind of story plotline (and the writing skill to make it succeed convincingly) that traverses time and retains meaning and interest, no matter the year. Some things change, some things never do.

Being familiar with Piercy's poetry and something of her own biography, I expected a feminist approach to the plot. Indeed, it was there, and this is why I was soon confident in my enjoyment of the novel, even if it did veer from my more typical reading choices. Whatever the genre, I like to read about strong and unique women. "Woman on the Edge of Time" has plenty, in the now and in the to be.

Consuelo (Connie) in the 1970s lives a life of poverty and abuse, when domestic violence is as common as air, and women survive all too often by selling themselves out as objectified beings, bodies without minds, without souls. A pimp beats up "his" women to maintain order, in this case, to prevent an unwanted pregnancy, and a scene of violence ensues, in which Connie is made the villain rather than the victim. She can say nothing to prevent herself from being institutionalized in a psychiatric hospital, called mad, whereas the male's voice, that of the pimp's, holds unquestioned weight. He has her out of his way to create more victims.

I couldn't help but draw parallels here with another literary classic, "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" by Ken Kesey, and even some undertones of Margaret Atwood's "Handmaid's Tale," but Piercy succeeds in making this story her own. Connie strives to maintain her sanity by traveling in time to another life in 2137, assisted by future person (Piercy uses "per" as pronoun, thus avoiding gender designation of she or he in this future), Luciente, a kind of almost andrygenous being. In that future, she explores a life much more pleasing, if not utopian, and in series of trips, explores this future world in its treatment of relationships, the interchange of genders and generations, the workings of community and government, the balance between work and play, spiritual evolvement, and even the occasional war. For it is not utopia, but a constant work in progress, however more evolved than our current day, with humankind in an ongoing mode of self-improvement.

No less fascinating is a shorter description of a darker parallel of life in the future, when Connie misses her usual destination and lands instead in a future that could just as easily, one fears, evolve from our current time. In this future, women are even more objectified than they are today, creatures resembling comic book and Barbie doll fantasy proportions, created by plastic surgery, produced specifically and only for the erotic pleasures of men, becoming sexual slaves. Mind reading allows for no privacy, no chance of escape. A woman might only think of the possibility of escape, and already she is reined in and punished. It is a world of callousness and cruelty, domination of gender over gender, power and greed ruling all, happiness for none.

In the hospital, woven through the story, Connie struggles for her sanity, as the doctors in power rule out any possibility of what they cannot understand, puzzled by her episodes of "unconsciousness," and many in the ward are forced to undergo brain-altering surgery. Connie, too, undergoes repeated surgeries. Her attempts at escape, sometimes in mind but sometimes also in body, can be heartrending, as she comes so close, so close...

This is a story worth reading, if not for intriguing storyline, than as a philosophical treatise on what could be, what might be, what a future for humankind might hold if we approach it with understanding. Whether Connie truly travels in time or only in fantasy is perhaps least important of all. Those who pick it up as science fiction fans might be disappointed if seeking high tech descriptions and complex alien worlds; this is not Piercy's intent. She is far more interested in exploring the evolvement of humankind if all are allowed to pursue their best, towards a world of harmony and a caring community that works on all practical levels.

While I still prefer Piercy's poetry to this sampling of her prose (my first, but probably not my last), her skill and imagination to produce worlds that intrigue as well as enlighten is worthwhile reading.

It is frightening how much of life reminds me of this book... and its possible futures. most of my utopic daydreams and realities have had their roots in this novel. a great jumping off point!

Piercy's novel is an entertaining and historically important work of Science Fiction, exemplifying many of the technological as well as feminist concerns of her time.

                    Book Description

A Labor of Love: How To Write A Eulogy is a book for people who want to make a contribution to a memorial service. A eulogy is a wonderful way to recapture memories, express emotions, and share experiences with loved ones. This book provides guidance, reassurance, helpful phrases, and the clearly-defined steps that people need when they have very little time, writing experience, or emotional composure. The book even suggests topics to write about.

This 96-page book includes sample eulogies of famous people such as Mohandas Gandhi, John F. Kennedy, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Itzhak Rabin, Jacqueline Kennedy Onasis, Princess Diana, and others. These alone make interesting reading.

A Labor of Love also contains a section of appropriate poems, a discussion of the healing power of writing, and a description of a concept called, "The Living Eulogy."

Seemed to me that the author had penned some eulogies, so felt that he was an expert on the subject. Yeah, it might have been helpful for the very first timer....but not for anyone who's done anykind of writing in their past.

We used this book to help write a eulogy for our father. The tips and techniques were excellent in helping form our thoughts. The 'sample text' as well as questions to ask ourselves when writing the eulogy helped us put it together.

Many people said that the eulogy really summarized our father.

                    Thank you.

I wrote the eulogy for my dad in one day after reading pages 7-28 of the book. The eulogy was very well received.

When the time came to write a eulogy for my dad, I had all the background information I needed. What I lacked was knowing what the eulogy was supposed to accomplish, how to organize my thoughts, what to write about and not write about, and how long the eulogy should be. The book answered all these questions.

The suggestion of having a cold glass of water handy during the delivery was very helpful. I nearly lost it at the end, drank the cold water, and finished the eulogy.

The book almost did not arrive before I had to write the eulogy. My advice is order the book well in advance of when you need to use it.

I had to deliver the eulogy at my mother's recent funeral service and this was without doubt the most difficult thing I have ever had to do in my life. However, after reading the book, I was able to say things that otherwise I could not possibly have put into words. I was able to walk away from the occasion knowing in my heart that I had said exactly what I had wanted to say.

Without the support provided by this book I could not possibly have done so. I offer you my sincerest thanks for the support given by the book.

                    With grateful thanks, J. Wilson

                    4/2/00

                    Dear Gary,

I guess it must be around months or maybe a year ago when I first ordered your book. At the time my mother was still alive but was suffering with congestive heart failure. Since she had been near the brink and back several times, I realized that when she did pass, I wanted to eulogize her for my family as I was her only son (39 yrs old, w. 4 older sisters!). I purchased the book ahead of time as I found my mind coming up with some ideas, yet I wanted more formal direction.

Well, the day finally came 12/17/99. She had been near the end the previous week, but started recovering as she had so many times before. When she lulled us into a sense the emergency had passed, she slipped out the back door when we weren't looking!

The bottom line is, I am so grateful for you and your book. Although I found it a very difficult task to sit down and work on her eulogy while she was alive (more procrastination than doing taxes!), I did manage to create an outline after first creating a "cluster". When the time came, I was able to take the outline and create the actual eulogy.

Eventhough I had only created the outline while she was alive, it gave me great relief knowing I had gotten that far, and that it was waiting for me when the time was required.

My family and I feel very blessed to have had our mother (and father), but dad had passed away when kids aged from 21 to 11. She overcame quite a bit to get her 5 kids through college. Therefore, I had quite a bit that I wanted to say. The only suggestion I was unable to follow was to keep it in the 5-10 minute range, I guess mine was more like 10-15 minutes (abridged!). But what the heck as they say. Even my minister and the funeral director encouraged me to do what I wanted.

People were very touched by what I wrote. I couldn't have done it w/o you, Gary. I am a decent public speaker, but this was a whole new ball game! You made a very very difficult task both approachable and possible. I am proud of the finished product and I believe I gave her the sendoff she deserved. She was one in a million.

You have provided a tremendous service by writing LOL and you deserve great accolades in the help you provide to those of take on this true "labor of love". It's amazing that more isn't written about eulogies as death is a universal experience. This fact makes me more grateful that you wrote what you wrote!

                    Gratefully Yours, Richard Lempke

Robert Stein (professor of NT at Bethel Theological Seminary) explains the importance of playing by the rules of Bible interpretation to grasp the author's original intent.

One point the author makes is to establish the Rules of Interpretation. Stein breaks this into a four part teaching consisting of Hermeneutics, Vocabulary, Spiritual and Biblical, and the different Forms of Scripture. Stein lays out the roles of the Author, the Text, and the Reader. The second main point in the book is the specific rules of the individual games such as; Wisdom, Prediction, Poetry, Idioms, Hyperbole, Parables, Biblical Narrative, Epistles and Treaties, Laws, and Songs.

Another concept that is covered is the literary genre (literary form) being used by the author that governs that form. An example is the author had previously struggled with the correct meaning of the Beatitudes. Stein realizes that the Beatitudes were not addressed as "conditions for membership" rather, as blessing addressed to "as blessings pronounced upon those already within the kingdom" The author gives very convincing details as to why we should believe this interpretation.

A final important point is the Sensus Plenior (fuller meaning) of the text in chapter six. And the difficulties when this speaks about when the author willed to convey one truth, God had a different truth he willed to convey by the same vocabulary and grammar. An example of this is addressed in Isaiah 7:14 and Hosea 11:1 (Isaiah's day) which would mean a maiden (described as a virgin in the NT) would give birth to a son named Immanuel.

In conclusion, "A Basic Guide to Interpreting the BIBLE" by Robert H. Stein discusses a myriad of scriptures, putting them in the proper literary form to discover the original intention of the author. The author has presented the necessary steps needed to put the scriptures in proper context as the Biblical authors intended.

My opinion of the book is that the author has spent a great deal of time in his research, and he has a vast knowledge of scripture. Many valuable resources are utilized within the book, and the book is very well outlined from start to finish. I found the book challenging and somewhat difficult to read at times, yet it heightened my awareness to the importance of proper hermeneutics. If you are countering struggles in understanding scriptures, I highly recommend adding this book to your shelf as a valuable reference tool whether you are an apologist or lay Christian. Each chapter ends with a questionnaire to get you engaged with the concepts.

5 out of 5 stars I bought this book to gave away at least 5 times.......2006-09-04

This book was recommended to my by faculty at a seminary. I have no theological training what so ever and desired to delve deeper into the Bible. This book was not written to explain any Biblical ideas, but rather to give the user an idea of Hermeneutics, or how we interpret the Bible. I would highly recommend it to anyone who wants to go into more detail than a quick reading. It is great for beginners and all the terms that are used are introduced are defined in the book. There are questions at the end of each chapter which will also help you learn the material. I have bought this book for many people and will continue to do so.

4 out of 5 stars Very Good and Easy to Read.......2005-04-20

If you're interested in learning the basics of proper Biblical hermeneutics, this is a book for you. Stein does a good job presenting the material in an easy-to-read fashion, yet writes in a very scholarly manner. The book is divided into two sections: The first section deals with the general rules of interpretation (the first four chapters); the second section deals with how to interpret proverbs, prophecies, poetry, idioms, hyperboles, parables, narratives, epistles, covenants, laws, and songs (chapters 5-13). The book is generally geared towards the average lay person or beginner seminary student. It can be used as a technical hermeneutical aid or as a tool to assist the average believer in how to read the Bible properly during Bible studies and quiet times. Stein's book is a valuable resource that should be available in every Christian bookshelf.

                      5 out of 5 stars Outstanding!.......2004-10-08

This book will give you a sound foundation for biblical interpretation. It's a gold mine of information. If you can't take a formal class on the subject (and even if you can) this is the book for you.

5 out of 5 stars Very good introduction to sound Biblical interpretation.......2002-03-22

Dr. Stein's text is as good a book as he is a professor. I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in sound methods to Biblical interpretation. It is easy to read and very easy to understand. A very good book for lay people in the church who are looking for help in interpreting Biblical passages. Very good!!!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderfull book to start your creative juices flowing.......2002-01-30

I agree with the reviewer from Incline Village, NV. The book has cute patterns! I saw the HGTV show where they showcased "Molly's Quilt" -- the beautiful pansy quilt. They said on the show the quilt was good for beginners. That inspired me to purchase the book. We all have to start somewhere in quilting and this book gives me ideas for selecting colors, something so hard to do when we all start out. Maybe the quilts in the book are not perfectly sewn, but I would be glad to claim any one of them as mine. Quilts don't have to be tiny complicated triangles and curves to be beautiful and this book proves it.

5 out of 5 stars Great assortment of patterns + 2 from Simply Quilts.......2001-03-30

I am unable to relate to the other reviewers as I think this book has some really cute patterns. From contemporary to more traditional, the patterns run the gamut. Including quilts for a guy, wedding, kids, etc. I purchased this book because two of the patterns are for quilts that were on HGTV's Simply Quilts (hearts and mollys pansies). I plan on making the adorable alphabet sampler for my new nephew. This book has a great assortment of patterns and I believe it is worth every penny.

                              1 out of 5 stars Extremely disappointing.......2001-03-14

Not only were the quilt designs disappointing, the quilts in the pictures were sewn so badly I would have been embarrased even as a beginner. The seams were off by at least a quarter of an inch if not more.

2 out of 5 stars Been there, done that.......1999-04-08

What a disappointing collection of quilt patterns and color combos. Only one or two interesting ideas in the whole book. Sadly disappointing. Expected better from this author.

Sergei Eisenstein's essays about the art of cinema have influenced film theorists for decades, but it was his films that redefined what cinema is capable of achieving--the "Odessa Steps" sequence from Battleship Potemkin, with its rapid cutting and juxtaposed images, is one of the most famous scenes in all cinema, and is often used as evidence of the power of film as an art form. For biographer and film historian Ronald Bergan, "Eisenstein, though his films are thoroughly Russian in content and context, belongs directly in the current of 20th-century Western art with such other 'cosmopolitan' Russians as Igor Stravinsky, Sergei Rachmaninov, Vassili Kandinsky, Marc Chagall, Vladimir Nabokov, George Balanchine, and Sergei Diaghilev."

A Life in Conflict is a fitting subtitle for this biography of the iconoclastic filmmaker, who was able to complete only seven feature-length films in a career spanning just over two decades, in the midst of frequent clashes with the Soviet Union's official tastemakers, including Joseph Stalin himself. (Among the book's highlights is a lengthy quotation from Eisenstein's journals transcribing a conversation he had with Stalin and other Soviet officials about "mistakes" in Ivan the Terrible, Part 2.) Critics have often denigrated Eisenstein for toeing the Communist Party line; Bergan reminds us that doing so was a simple matter of survival. Bergan also provides much more detail than previous accounts of the director's experiences in Hollywood under contract to Paramount, drawing upon Eisenstein's memoirs and Moscow archives. This personal material, which also helps contextualize decades of speculation about Eisenstein's sexuality and its relationship to his work, is perhaps the single factor that makes the biography worth reading no matter what one's degree of familiarity with the films. --Ron Hogan

Ronald Bergan shows that although Eisenstein was committed to the Bolshevik cause and contributed to its development, his films must, in no way, simply be dismissed as propaganda. Eisenstein pioneering visual techniques, explorations in montage and lyrical representations have earned him an indisputable position as among film makers.
The culminating scenes in `Strike!', for instance, are built on an alternating sequence of shots that show soldiers chasing and shooting the strikers while a butcher is slitting the throat of farm animals in the slaughterhouse. This allegorical interpretation of the Czar as a butcher wa not fully understood by a large portion of the viewing public, as Eisenstein himself witnessed when the film was shown in the rural areas throughout the country. Indeed, many farmers were unable to grasp the metaphor of the slaughtered beasts as an association of the Czar as a criminal, a butcher, a murderer of innocents because for farmers the killing of an animal did not constitute a crime.

The rally to arms in `Alexander Nevsky' culminated in the battle on ice scene (which runs for almost a third of the film). The scene, which Eisenstein duly prepared with the aid of sketches, appears as if inspired by the paintings of the Italian renaissance artist P. Uccello, as both show the violent clash of armor, horses, arrows, spears and iron.
