1 out of 5 stars Lack of character.......2007-03-21

Although the book may be poetic and lyrically written, the superfluity of figurative language and abstract narration makes it difficult to extract the true meaning behind its short stories and anecdotes. The lack of definitive characters, names, and personalities make it difficult to tell exactly what is going on and completely renders character development obsolete. The book, although it addresses very real tensions on several factors, fails to drive home the significance of tribulations and common place yet serious issues that the migrant workers deal with because of it's occult language and stream of conscious stylistic writing. If you can read Spanish, the original is far more impactful than the translated version, but still leaves the reader in an unsatisfied state of confusion as to what actually happened. For those of you who do not care for stories without a story, this book is not for you.

I really loved to read this book because it help me to understand the difficult times the mexican-americans passed through. While I read this book I identified myself with it. I think the writer of the book did a wonderful job because through this book he let people know how important the challenges in your life are. They help you to become better everyday and inspire other people not to give up. I really enjoyed this book.

4 out of 5 stars Struggle to Survive.......2005-12-08

This book is about immigrants coming from Mexico to the U.S. and struggling to survive. This book has taught me many things about migrant families. One thing that I learned is that it is not easy to survive in a world were racism exist. One example of racism is that there is hard labor but the bosses rarely care about their workers health. In the first short story "the children can't wait," the boy is just too young and to thirsty to continue on working because he has been working in the fields all day. The sun is the worst enemy a person can have, since it can give you a sunstroke, which is caused by overexposure to sun and heat. The boss wanted the workers to keep on working no matter what. He then noticed that a boy kept on going for water and more water after each couple of minutes. The boss then decided to give the boy a big scare but his plan backfire and instead caused a big problem. I consider this to be one of the saddest short stories. This book includes other short stories about migrant families and their ways of life. For example, large families living in chickens coops, the things children have to give up in order to help their parents in the fields, and the amount of labor that work migrant families have to do for a pathetic low wage of $3.50 a day. Families also are never stable in one place because they have to keep on looking for work every time there is no more work where they are located at the moment. Therefore, I believe that it is not easy being a migrant worker. This book is worth anybody's time to read. I recommend this book to anybody that is interested in learning about some of the hard struggles that migrant families have to endure in order to survive.

4 out of 5 stars Honest Coming of Age Stories........2005-05-17

I took a literature class this semester that focused largely on literature of the Mexican-American experience. "...And the Earth Did Not Devour Him" was one of my favorite books of the semester (though there were a couple that I thought were better), and it was probably my classmates' single favorite. There was certainly a large response from the students, and it was not without reason.

This book consists of several related stories. All of them are about the experience of the poor, migrant farmworker. There is such compassion and humanity in these people as they struggle to survive. The stories depict the cruelty of the life and particularly the way it is inflicted on people. There is also much about the community's ability to come together to help one another survive. Of course, there are also stories that depict the harsh pressure inflicted on relationships by the hardship of these peoples' lives. The stories usually come back to the single character, a young boy coming of age in this suffering community. His plight is particularly emphasized. He has to struggle to quell his hatred of those people who hold his fate in their hands, and he has to struggle with God. The community's faith in God offers them the only hope and meaning they have, but the boy questions a God who seems to be absent in his struggle.

Ultimately, Rivera's work is a compelling read. There are a lot of reasons to read the work. It tells an honest coming of age story, and it depicts the unique pressures of locating identity with such social hardship. There are also so many moving, provocative images in the stories. There is a lot of meaning to be found here.

I'm not a Spanish-speaker, and as such, I can't really vouch for the translation. I've heard a number of people complain about this translation, and I do doubt that it does the original full justice. It's still worth reading though. It seems that reading these stories in whatever form available is better than not reading the book at all.

4 out of 5 stars A Review with a Claim.......2004-04-23

-----Teachers all over America force their students to read many books to help them find self-identity in the awkward years before adulthood. Most students, for example, are forced to read Catcher in the Rye. This book recognizes issues that the white, urban, middle to upper class American youth goes through. Issues like sex, drugs, school, changes and overall life in the city. This book helps much of the youth, including myself, cope with growing up. It doesn't, however, cover the issue of segregation and poverty. These two topics are very common, and have a huge impact on much of the American youth. A book that does cover these topics, however, is one written by Tomas Rivera, entitled, And the Earth Did Not Devour Him. Tomas Rivera creates fictional short stories, from an adolescent's perspective, about real life issues for Mexican-Americans in the early to middle twentieth century. Though the stories are fiction, Rivera articulates truths about the struggles with issues like work, family, religion, poverty and segregation. Rivera has created a book that could greatly serve as a coping tool for youths that struggle with such issues. It should therefore, be brought into American school systems in order to allow students to identify with it as they mature into adults.
-----One of the short stories that pretty much discuss each of the issues including work, family, religion, poverty and segregation is, in fact, the one the book's named after, "And the Earth Did Not Devour Him." It covers not only work related issues like low pay, long hours, hot weather, unreasonable bosses, and young children working, but also poverty, family and religion. This story is about a poor family where almost all members have to help out and work. They all work on a plantation where, during the peak of summer, the sun starts to get to them and they drop like flies due to sunstroke. A young boy is witnessing this and is constantly expressing how he feels. He starts to question God. He wonders why God would do this to his kind, hard working family. He curses God and finally after doing so feels at peace. This story is one of the most powerful stories in the book. It is well written, covering many issues in only a matter of pages. Many children grow up and see their family work so hard without much to show for it. Because of this, many children blame God or question their religion. There is no answer to such frustration but this story can help be a tool to help cope with it. This is just one out of the many stories in this book that is meaningful in some aspect. Each represents a memory in a young boy's life that was important to him, in a good or bad way. Rivera effectively uses the child's memory as a way to jump from story to story. By doing this, the book doesn't get boring and he tackles many different issues.
-----This book definitely takes the role as a deconstruction literary style in the aspect that the stories can be taken more than one way. Readers could use them to cope, as a lesson, or just for entertainment. I, personally, found this book to be very moving, informative and entertaining. I became aware of how fortunate I am not to have to deal with such issues. With the deconstruction literary style in mind, I would definitely recommend this book to anyone of any age, especially a youth that has suffered from work, family, religion, poverty or segregation. Teachers should defiantly bring this book into their curriculum where it can be used to help cope with growing up or to learn about some of the struggles that many oppressed Americans, mostly Mexican Americans, went through and/or still go through.

        Book Description

Barbara Jefferson, a young American teaching in Tokyo in the 1960s, is set on a life-changing quest when her Japanese surrogate mother, Michi, dies, leaving her a tansu of homemade plum wines wrapped in rice paper. Within the papers Barbara discovers writings in Japanese calligraphy that comprise a startling personal narrative. With the help of her translator, Seiji Okada, Barbara begins to unravel the mysteries of Michi's life, a story that begins in the early twentieth century and continues through World War II and its aftermath.
As Barbara and Seiji translate the plum wine papers they form an intimate bond, with Michi a ghostly third in what becomes an increasingly uneasy triangle. Barbara is deeply affected by the revelation that Michi and Seiji are hibakusha, survivors of the atomic bombing in Hiroshima, and even harder for her to understand are the devastating psychological effects wrought by war. Plum Wine examines human relationships, cultural differences, and the irreparable consequences of war in a story that is both original and timeless.

3 out of 5 stars Disappointing, but I finished it anyway.......2007-08-27

I admired the author's intent here--I'd not read a story dealing with Hiroshima (other than John Hersey in high school), and it did provide food for thought. That said, several things annoyed me about the book, and the reading was made less pleasurable because of that. Like other readers, I found the characterization weak. Seiji was totally unsympathetic and unattractive in my opinion--can't imagine what she saw in him. But then I wasn't that crazy about her either--she seemed like a weak vessel for telling the story. Ultimately I didn't really care about either Barbara or Seiji.

Another things that drove me nuts was the frequent use of Japanese phrases and no hint of what they might mean. Often in historical fiction that involves a language other than English, authors thoughtfully provide brief phrase glossaries. Then the reader can actually learn something. In this book, the phrases sounded like the author wanted to impress us with her knowledge of Japanese. Well, good for her, but I need a translation.

So, a good attempt at an interesting story, but it seemed to only scratch the surface.

        3 out of 5 stars Not what I hoped..........2007-08-10

While the potential of a wonderful book is there, I think this one lacks in a quite a few areas.

Barbara is a bit needy and I think she feels a little too entitled. She seems to get possessive of Michi's belongings anytime she see's someone else with them. Seiji is just downright annoying. His temperment is so erratic that I just got tired of him.

I also wasn't impressed with the writers style. Most of the book felt too "choppy" and the story too rushed.

I think the story itself was wonderful, but just could have been better executed.

4 out of 5 stars moving and thoughtful - women's book club enjoyed it.......2007-08-07

This was the "book of the month" in my women's book club. We all enjoyed it. It was hard to put down once I got into it - all agreed was a book we would recommend for other book clubs - great discussion points, and things to think about.

        2 out of 5 stars so - so.......2007-07-07

I think the author's focus was too much on the description of Japan in the 60's and the lives of Hiroshima survivors. The descriptions were good, but she didn't pay much attention to character development; they were flat, all over the place, and I didn't really care about them. The female main character just got downright annoying toward the end. The last 1/3 of the book was too long, and it dragged out trying to be profound.

3 out of 5 stars VICARIOUS TRIP TO JAPAN IN THE 60'S.......2007-05-21

There is richness, warmth, sensitivity and intelligence in Davis-Gardners novel that conveys a very sure knowledge of its time and place.

Set in Japan during the Vietnam War, Plum Wine tells the story of an American teacher ( Barbara) and a Japanese potter (Seiji) who come together as the result of Barbara's inheritance of a tansu (chest) filled with bottles of plum wine each bottle wrapped in rice paper containing exquisite handwritten calligraphy. Each bottle and page represents a journal page covering the years from 1930 to 1965.

This is a book you keep picking up because it's well defined examination of the differences between Japanese and American culture is so beautifully written. In addition, the reader receives a lesson of sorts in Japanese vocabulary, folklore, sentiment, food and customs.

The main characters, however, are not as distinctive nor are they as engaging as the Japanese customs and exotic landscapes. Barbara appears, at times, to be suffering from bi-polar disorder going from temperamental and aggressive at one moment to weepy and needy in the next. Seiji's behavior is secretive and erratic and you never quite believe that he is truly interested in Barbara. In truth, the peripheral characters are more interesting and contribute much more to the stories theme and texture than our protagonists.

For its artistic observation of all things Japanese, its exploration of the damaging and lasting legacy of war, and its scrutiny of mother/daughter relationships this book deserves 5 stars. As for Barbara, Seiji and their love story---- a grudging two stars.

Nestor's story is interesting, but I wanted more about Nathan. Too much about the world of the vampires can be too much without something human to offset it. I'm hoping the next book centers more on Nathan.

5 out of 5 stars A NIGHTMARE WORLD OF WONDERS!.......1999-07-24

This 2nd installment is just as good if not better than its predecessor. Lumley again triumphs in this novel of vampires and werewolves who don't get along with anyone or anything- including themselves! That makes for tons of conflict and great reading. The monsters come out at night and hunt the human travelers whom must keep on moving continually because of this nightmare world in which they live. But don't be fooled, these humans can take care of themselves pretty darn well. This is some of the best reading I have ever had the privilige of reading. And I read a lot of different kinds of books and I say this is up there with the best of them in my 30-plus years in reading. Keep up the good work Mr. Lumley!

                        Book Description

                        Delicious All-American Recipes
What's your favorite all-American comfort food? Thanksgiving turkey and pumpkin pie? Barbecued ribs and potato salad? Chili and cornbread?

Whatever your preference, you'll find it inside these pages. Award-winning cookbook author Elaine Corn has gathered 50 of America's most popular recipes and presented each of them with easy-to-follow directions and the stories behind these nostalgic foods.

For instance, legend has it that the American hamburger had its humble beginning from Jewish immigrants who sailed the Hamburg line in the 1850s and combined their preserved, smoked meat with soaked breadcrumbs and onion. Over time, we adapted this into a broiled patty on a sliced bun.

And is it possible that strawberry shortcake may be the delicious result of Native Americans showing colonists how to bake indigenous strawberries into cornbread?

Although we may never know who first stirred onion soup mix into sour cream, we do know that another one of America's favorite snacks is really named after a man called "Nacho."

Each of America's favorite recipes has a great story behind it, and many have been all-around enjoyable for hundreds of years Keeping them alive are Americans like us, folks who are always happy to savor a meal containing some of our nation's soul.

What do mashed potatoes, macaroni and cheese, meatloaf (Mom's, of course), and pecan pie have in common? They're American to the core. But America's favorite recipes are more than just famous and delicious comfort foods. They're packed with history, legend, and lore; conjecture and anecdote; and outright gossip. Inside, you'll discover 50 foolproof recipes selected for their overwhelming familiarity in American homes and restaurants, including:
                        ·New England Clam Chowder
                        ·Caesar Salad
                        ·San Francisco Sourdough Bread
                        ·Fried Chicken and Cream Gravy
                        ·New York Cheesecake
                        ·Chocolate Chip Cookies
                        ·And many, many more!
These pages reveal how famous restaurants created signature dishes that are now beloved favorites. This is where you get the lowdown on how Eggs Benedict became associated with Delmonico's in New York, who made the first Cobb Salad at the Brown Derby in Hollywood, and why Oysters Rockefeller saved the day at Antoine's in New Orleans.

I have found this to be a very comprehensive price guide. It was refered to me by a long time collector and I am not disappointed. I have been using it for a year now and it has been a great companion to "Roseville in All it's Splendor" The prices are not always 100% on the mark but I feel that it is closer then others on the market. And it fits in my purse ;)

                        Book Description

Over 130 ceramic lines from the Roseville Pottery Company are listed and valued in this very inclusive guide. Arranged in alphabetical order, each line and its most common variations are listed and priced by line number. Among the categories featured are Early Velmoss, experimental pieces, Keynote, Lamps, Raymor Modern Artware, Rozane Royal, trial glaze pieces, and products not found in Roseville guides. This quick reference works well as a companion to the author's Introducing Roseville Pottery (newly revised and expanded for 2001). Listings for shapes illustrated in that book appear in boldface here, with page references. An invaluable "Index to Roseville Shape Numbers, c. 1916-1946," produced with the assistance of collector and researcher Lou Haggis, explains the factory's original shape numbering system. This will help collectors identify and date little-known Roseville shapes. Everyone interested in art pottery, American artware, or Ohio pottery will find this an essential reference.

I have read this book a number of times and find out something new each time. I find the book well thought out, well photographed, and very informative. I am especially confused about the review from July 2002 that claimed the book had no photos? My book has photos on every page.

I found this guide to be of little use. All of the information contained could be easily gleaned from internet auction sites with little or no effort and no expense. Other guides make an effort to include obscure pricing with much more complete reference. Avoid this one as it is of little help. Find other guides by authors who put a little more effort into their work.

This is a book that someone puts together so they can say they wrote a book on Roseville- it reminds me of those cheap Printer/Fax/Scanner machines, that claim to do three things but do nothing well. There's just not enough photos, information on Roseville styles, information on fakes, or enough information on anything, to allow you to Buy without risk. In addition, the author should offer FREE price updates on current Roseville market prices at his website, but he doesn't. THERE'S MORE FREE INFORMATION ON THE INTERNET ABOUT ROSEVILLE, THAN THERE IS IN THIS BOOK.

This book is described as having over 840 color pictures. It does not have a single picture...A price book with no pictures is useless to me.

Caricatures demand the same skill and sense of proportion that realistic figures do. This is particularly true of carving heads, which can easily become grotesque looking if certain rules are not followed. With his years of carving, Pete LeClair has developed a sure-fire method for carving great caricature heads. Now he shares it with carvers around the country. He takes the reader step-by-step through the process of carving 33 projects, with each step illustrated with a color photograph and precise caption. A gallery showing the variety that can be achieved by following this method is included in the back., 250 color photos, 33 caricature carvings, 8 1/2" x 11"

                          Book Description

Time is a valued commodity in our modern world, and everyone struggles to make the most of each minute. Russel and Mary Wright recognized decades ago that finding time to organize their lives and homes would become a priority for modern men and women. In their groundbreaking book, Guide to Easier Living, the Wrights offered simple ways to achieve a comfortable, well-designed, and organized living environment in any home for any family. < BR> Originally published in 1950, Gibbs Smith is proud to rerelease Guide to Easier Living, and to reintroduce the Wrights' time-tested and proven methods for maintaining an inviting and efficient home. From ways to make household chores as fast and painless as possible, to how to organize a room for maximum living space, the Wrights pioneered a new informal way of living for a newly suburban American public. The Wrights' ideas revolutionized American living and the way everyday people dealt with the unending job of keeping a home in order. These methods and ideas are just as relevant-if not more so-today as they were a half-century ago. < BR> Russel and Mary Wright were prominent and successful designers who pioneered the fusion of modern design and informal living. Most importantly, they were known for their tabletop designs. The Wrights' most famous tabletop design, American Modern, was the best-selling dinnerware in American history and has just been rereleased by Oneida Ltd. < BR>

5 out of 5 stars One of my all time favorite books.......2004-11-16

I bought this book when it had just come out and I was newly married. Ive used it so much that it is in tatters, but I still treasure it. The information and illustrations of storage closets, kitchens, general home layouts, etc. are still as useful and inspiring today as they were back in the 1950s. Their sections on choices and care of products for the home: floors, etc are still valid. Their discussions of time and motion techniques in cooking, house cleaning, bed making, etc. are outstanding. I still refer to it frequently. This book is like a dear old friend and has influenced my life for 50 some odd years. It is one of the 9 or 10 most influential and treasured books that I own.

Written during the height of the best of Mid 20th Century consumer progress, this reprint is full of still-valid ideas, with the remainder for just looking in wonder at times gone by. In this book, Russel and Mary went to great lengths to explain everything that they believed was important to orchestrating successful home engineering and economics. It's fun to read, and the original illustrations are stylized and tongue-in-cheek. It's fantastic that this book has been reprinted, so its wisdom and guidelines can educate and possibly downscale some of the pseudo-modern pretentiousness of our contemporary lifestyles, via the true modernism of the past that is expressed in the Wright's text. For instance, the mainstream 21st Century over-stuffed attitudes of living in contrived luxury, look bloated and phoney compared to the Wrights' explanations of pared-down but comfortably designed home decorating and economics; i.e., think modern, lightweight, artistic, and easy to maintain -- not necessarily "cheap" or severely spare. Their message was to have fun, make your house look beautiful, and do it intelligently with as little extraneous pomp and flounce to clean as possible. Great advice for the 21st Century!

Mostly it seems to be directed at someone who is in the middle of the road, so to speak, but I think that newbies will also find some nice tips on how to avoid headaches and pitfalls of this specific business.

I've been in the industry for four years and am in the process of going freelance. This book gives excellent advice for drumming up business. Not vague at all.

It would also be extremely helpful for people looking for their first job after design school.

Well, here I was, too distracted to write a proper raving review because I was busy absorbing in all of the wonderful, easy to follow and sometimes downright humorous advice from a long awaited book that is refreshingly geared towards design professionals of any level. More experienced designers will find helpful suggestions on effectively managing and growing their career. I was browsing the graphic design section of Barnes & Noble the other day looking for a different book on the same topic. I couldn't find the title that I was looking for, so I picked this one up, grabbed a cup of coffee, and started leafing through it. I read a few bits of the beginning chapter, where Fisher details the advantages and disadvantages of different traditional and not-so-traditional educational paths for would-be designers. As a freshman at a liberal arts college majoring in graphic design, I was immediately intrigued. I temporarily forgot about the book I had been looking for and bought this one instead. As a testament to how great this book is- I finished it in just 2 days. In fact this is one of the few books where I can honestly say I "couldn't put it down." Fisher writes in an informal, easy to read style. His approach to giving advice is very open-minded but very no-nonsense and practical at the same time. Most importantly, this book covers it all: everything from the initial education of the designer, to starting out in the industry, to self-promotion, legal issues, and dealing with one's mistakes and screw ups. Throughout the book Fisher draws on the experience of nearly 100 designers and deign firm owners and the pages of this book are dripping with references to other books, magazines, and great online resources for designers and other creative professionals. This book gave me some great insights on getting started as a graphic designer and has me even more excited about my career. Five stars, without question!

I picked this up ... at a discount bookstore and could not have been more delighted. After first being introduced to Wolf on the ...morning radio program, I can't get enough! Unlike some celebrity authors, this book was actually written by Warner Wolf. It reads just as though he were speaking to you during one of his rants during a broadcast. Warner has a very unique take on the sports world and he "gets it". If you "get it", you will enjoy this book. If you don't, you probably stumbled upon this book by accident...

Lots of short chapters. Each on a different subject, so you can put the book down anytime and not need to remember a big story when you pick it back up. The author has a good sense of humor and covers some interesting subjects.

5 out of 5 stars If You Had Warner Wolf & No Laughs...YOU LOST!!.......2002-01-05

One of the truly great personalities in sports broadcasting, Warner offers his unique perspective on everything from baseball to golf, and most points in between. Wolf is so brutally honest about his career and the people he has met that you have to admire his step-up-to-the-plate, fresh takes on a variety of subjects.

This is a real page-turner, written in a light vein and laugh-out-loud funny! There are also a few surprises in store for the many fans of the Don Imus radio show, whose impression of Warner may be only from the few minutes he is allowed for his sports reports there. Warner doesn't mince words, but a lot of what he has to say is pretty deep, once you get past the laughs.

I really enjoyed this book. It's for fun and it's a quick read, but the author also makes the reader think. "CHANGE THE RULES!" An entertaining book doesn't HAVE to be only for laughs...this one will also make you say, "Hm-m-m-m-m!" I would recommend it to anyone. Even my wife(who yells, "Isn't there anything ELSE on?", whenever I turn on a TV sporting event)loved it. It has enough substance outside of the sports environment to make a book that's even interesting to sports HATERS!

You won't regret the few bucks you'll spend for "Let's Go To The Videotape!"

Warner Wolf is an endearing character and a fabulous sportscaster. Never one to pull a punch, Mr. Wolf makes it his lifelong ambition to correct all idiotic rules and misnomers in modern sports. The problem is that he does it much better as a television personality than as a writer. I have no problem with opinionated people, but in a novel at least some effort should be made to offer the arguments of both sides before tendering the author's opinion. Also, there are so many chapters that are no more than a few paragraphs long. I found that to be somewhat tedious. It is more enjoyable to read a book where the author spins the story around many similar events and ties them together rather than penning numerous disjointed anecdotes. Nothing more is revealed here than many of Mr. Wolf's fans do not already know so they will be disappointed. The argument about the admission of Pete Rose into baseball's Hall of Fame hardly ranks up there with the exclusion of Galileo from the Catholic Church. Gimme a break!

2 out of 5 stars It's Warner Lite! Very Light.......2001-07-02

"Let's Go to the Videotape" consists of 112 short anecdotes, observations and stories packed into 303 pages. To say that "Let's Go" is quick reading is to overstate the obvious. If this compilation had no weaknesses other than brevity, it could be highly recommended. Unfortunately, it's not that simple. Mr. Wolf is an entertaining and very popular TV sports newsman. I looked forward to his 11:00 PM slot on NYC's Channel 2 for years. He is also a very able-and serious- public speaker. Mr. Wolf is in a different element here and his writing skills fall resoundingly short of his broadcasting abilities. Is this for a lack of effort? To be specific, many of the "chapters" could have easily been combined into a more concise format. Also, the grammar, or lack of same, cries out for an EDITOR! Did Warner, or his ghostwriter, ever notice the spell check icon? This is an affliction common to many books these days. Editing is an expense to be cut! More importantly, Warner (the publisher) should either invest in a fact checker or Warner (the author) should refresh his memory.i.e: 1) He mistold the tale of Mickey Mantle's 1956/1957 holdout by $40,000- a fortune in those days. 2) The "Bad News" Barnes basketball player was Jim, out of Texas Western (now Texas El Paso) and later the Knicks. 3) Chapter 84 ("Hello Allie") utterly glosses over how unpopular Allie Sherman was during his disastrous tenure as coach of the NY football Giants. The franchise needed 20 years to recover from that clown and his disastrous trade of the great Sam Huff. The author blew that one! If I had read with a red pencil, I could compile a longer list, but I'm certain the point is made. This is lightweight stuff. No harm no foul but no red meat either. I can't resist a closing pun: If you paid full hardcover price for this one, YOU LOST!
