Arrived quickly........2007-03-30
Arrived quickly. I expected a list of the best one night reads, I guess it depends on your likes and dislikes.
Good suggestions, but certainly not for everyone........2006-06-27
As the authors proclaim, this is a book lover's guide. But not everyone will share their tastes.
The authors do present one hundred short, informative and entertaining essays on the books they have enjoyed, which they feel others will appreciate as well.
I suspect I was not greatly impressed because I have read nearly all the books they recommend, some so many decades ago that I felt truly aged.
Many of the suggestions are not -- as the authors admit -- one night reads by any definition.
In some ways, I found the range of selections too broad, but that opinion probably reflects my personal tastes.
Treated as a descriptive list of the authors' favorites, most readers will discover something they haven't seen or thought of before. The descriptions will certainly aid in choosing what you might want to read.

The Best Recommendations.......2005-04-28
I heard these brothers speak at an evening event at the Library of Congress. They decried the chance nature of book publishing, where good books disappear and bad books make money.
Their own book is itself a great read. A Desiderata for essential reading. Take it with you when you pick through flea markets. Thank you, David and John Major.
Not just about literature.......2005-04-25
There are a lot of books in the world; it's great to have such a charming, well written guide as a companion through a lifetime of reading. A good portion of what I read tends to be subjects I'm interested in, authors read previously and what the book group is reading. This book has given me new avenues: subjects I never knew I was interested in, authors forgotten by the literary world, familiar titles that I have always heard about but have never read. The description essays are so personal and so inviting that you will want to start reading immediately. The wide ranging suggestions include memoirs, mysteries, literature and history. A must for book lovers.
I wish that I was a friend of the authors. I would love to check out their bookshelves. I also want to know what they would recommend on the 101st night and nights thereafter
What to Read?.......2002-11-15
My friends and I are always recommending books to each other. We pull out our notebooks and PDAs and scribble down authors and titles. This sharing is an integral part of our friendships. When I open and browse in 100 One-Nightight Reads, I feel as if I have been talking to a good friend - and want to scribble down notes to myself.
This collection of essays recommending books that one can happily read in one night - is so much more than an annotated bibliography! David and John Major are sharing their own personal recommendations with us all. They are offering an intimate tour of the books that have mattered to them. Each essay has an individual approach and when you read it, you feel as if you have had a conversation with the author.
Sometimes I am reminded of old friends - books such as Chinua Achebe's Things Fall Apart that had a profound influence on my thinking when I read it twenty years ago; sometimes I am delighted to find a new book that I didn't know about - such as Louis Begley's Wartime Lies that must go on The List. Then it's nice to remember old favorites such as Raymond Chandler's The Big Sleep. One of the things I like about this book is that this is not a list of classic books that `ought' to be read - its much more personal than that - broader in range - and much more fun. As I was reading, I found myself saying "Oh yes, I remember reading that,"- or "I must reread that!" - or "I must remember that one!"
Each essay elicits a specific response and this review would be too long if I wrote down all my comments. But the collection gives pleasure - a persuasive collection, that makes readers want to read more and might encourage those who don't read as much to pick up a book.
I think that teachers and librarians who offer guidance to young people would enjoy this book and find it useful.

Great end to a great series.......2006-02-16
THE PRODIGAL TEXAN by Lynnette Kent
February 15, 2006
Rating: ****
This is the last in the "Home To Loveless County" series published by Harlequin Superromance. In THE PRODIGAL TEXAN by Lynnette Kent, the author rounds out the series by focusing on Miranda Wright, the mayor of the town of Homestead, Texas, who is the reason this town still exists. She helped set up a program in which land that once belonged to private citizens is now being given away as part of a plan to bring in new blood to this dying town. While Miranda had been mentioned and appeared in all of the previous books, she is now front and center in this story, and the reader finally gets to find out what makes this woman tick. I found it very interesting that she was not what I had expected. In the previous books, Miranda comes across as somewhat rigid, very forceful, and totally in control. However, Miranda's past is one of a young girl who was considered the class dunce, and someone who would never achieve anything in life, let alone be a success at a prominent job. She proved the town wrong by running for mayor and winning. In the process, she made a few enemies, and angered others when she instituted the Homestead program.
Jud Ritter is the black sheep of his family. He had left town years ago, partly due to a rumor that he had gotten the town slut pregnant. Jud is now back in town, and discovering that many of the townspeople still believed in these old rumors. Jud's brother Ethan won't speak to him, and Miranda is embarrassed to be associated with Jud because of an incident that happened four years ago right before she became mayor. A kiss which may have meant more to her than to Jud, she can't forget this embarrassing event and does not want to see Jud again. However, Jud is in town to help the local sheriff get to the bottom of the crimes being committed around town, seemingly associated with the Homestead program, and may be targeted now at Miranda. The two are forced together in more ways than one.
This has been an enjoyable series from beginning to end, and THE PRODIGAL TEXAN is a fitting conclusion. The reader finally gets to know Miranda Wright, a woman who tries desperately to prove to herself and the town she grew up in that she can amount to something, that she was no longer that insecure girl who was kept back two grades. The reader will also be happy to find that the mystery behind the crimes committed in Homestead is finally revealed so there are no lose threads hanging. Jud Ritter and Miranda come across as two very unlikely soul mates, and one may even come to a conclusion that Jud Ritter is not a very likeable man at all. But as with all people, it sometimes takes a while to really get to know someone, and this truly is the case with Jud Ritter. His relationship with his brother Ethan also makes the story a very interesting read, as it shows how two brothers can be total opposites despite the fact that they had the same two parents. A subplot featuring Miranda's mother Nan and the hired hand, a much younger man named Cruz Martinez, enhances the already fascinating story. THE PRODIGAL TEXAN is almost two romances in one, since there is also much focus on Nan and Cruz's tale. The two plots mingle together quite nicely, as does the subplot of the mystery behind the crimes committed in Homestead, Texas. Readers will also be happy to see familiar characters from the previous books in the series. Reading THE PRODIGAL TEXAN is almost like coming home. Recommended for the plot line but also for its likeable characters, THE PRODIGAL TEXAN is a good example of how well written a Harlequin Superromance can be. - Courtesy of Love Romances.

didn't know he could write but he pulled it off.......2006-04-02
book by the first and vintage Captain Apollo Actor Richard Hatch. Continues the origional 1978 storyline with no relevence to the new series but still a good read
For completists only.......2006-02-19
These new BG novels with Richard Hatch's name on them are awful. The plotlines are confused and the characters are unrecognizable. If not for the BG names (like Apollo and Baltar), you'd never know you were reading a BG story. It's like really bad fan fiction you can find on the web. This stuff is only for completist collectors who want to own every piece of BG-related merchandise ever produced.

Spiritual and Fun.......2005-09-16
This book is a fun way to learn about saints through the eyes of interesting people that in one way or another may relate to anyone who has ever been a part of catholisism. It is also a great guide to people interested in learning about saints in a special way. The only setback for me was that it did not include as many saints as I hoped it would.
TOO CUTE.......2005-08-30
While there are a few - one glaring - inaccuracies in this book, I found it utterly adorable. I will treasure it always and read it until the pages disintagrate. It is very reader friendly and obviously written with a very loving spirit. God bless the writers.
With regards to St. Christopher - they repeatedly state he was declared persona-non-grata. This is not the case. Vatican II in 1969 revised the Roman Calendar. That's all. They needed to omit a few "celebrations." In our faith, Solemnities take priority over Feasts. Feasts take priority over Memorials. The Memorial to St. Christopher entered the Roman Calendar in 1550. So the Memorial was removed from the calendar. NOT the Saint from Sainthood. St. Christopher is, was and always will be - a Saint.
Mary Magdalen was not a prostitute. Nor was she the Mary that was the sister of Martha and Lazarus. There were a number of Mary's that followed Jesus. The Eastern Church has a rich history of Mary Magdalen. All the Bible says about her was that Jesus cast 7 demons out of her and that she supported him in his ministry with her wealth.
Joan of Arc's armor wasn't white in color. White armor means unadorned.
Most importantly - Saul (later Paul) was NOT a pagan. He was a Jew. A member of the Sanhedrin sent out to persecute the new faith. He had a major conversion.
I hope the sisters do a second book.
Very disappointing.......2001-08-29
This book pokes fun at praying to saints by adding silly rituals that are mostly superstitious. Pulling a lock of hair from someone's head and putting it under your pillow? THAT is supposed to make the person fall in love with you? Not. This book could send a gullible person on a wild goose chase to achieve something that could be achieved by praying to the right saint for the right purpose. It's a mockery. Perhaps just meant to be "for fun." I felt ripped off.
This Is A Cute Book.......2001-06-26
This book comes with books of Saints lives and how to pray for thier assistance. There are some of the things I disagree with and some that I find is okay to do. Otherwise, I enjoy learning about thier lives because they all show their great examples of being a TRUE Servant of God. :)
Help for those sleepless nights of worrying........2000-12-18
This wonderful little book offers help for life's troublesome situations. Now when I awaken at 3am, I can reach for this book for a little peace of mind. With it's short stories and backgrounds on the lives of the Saints, the authors take away the mysteries out of praying and it's rituals. Although born a catholic, some of these rituals are new to me. Having found this little treasure, I've purchased additional copies for my sisters and cousins in hopes that they may also find peace of mind in the wee hours of the morning.

Book Description
Financial advisers say that practice management help -- particularly with streamlining office operations -- is their greatest single need. Their margins are under pressure. Their once-flush clients are scrutinizing fees. They must slash costs, do more with less, and find time -- somehow -- to spend with the people they advise. Now, two leading financial planners and columnists deliver the help planners have been begging for.
This book is a nontechnical trove of technology, clever workarounds, and procedural efficiencies tailored to help planners move toward a paperless office, while still complying with SEC record-keeping requirements. The authors show planners how to reduce the amount of paperwork in their office by 99 percent and find anything they need in one minute or less by adapting innovative software tools and shifting from on-site employees to remote assistants.

Too Basic and Outdated.......2007-03-30
While I'm sure this book was great when it came out over 5-years ago. Now the book is very out of date and not very usefull. David Drucker should pull this book from the shelfs and give it a major update.
Not just for the professionals -- the customers can learn, too.......2007-01-13
I don't manage money for "outsiders", but I have a lot of paperwork to deal with just taking care of what I do for my "house accounts", and this book has given me great suggestions on how to minimize the paperwork while making it possible for me to actually find the receipts, contracts, account statements, and the like. It's a marvelous fount of information for the consumer of financial advice as well as for those who spend their day dispensing advice.
Virtual Office Tools review.......2005-04-11
Dave Drucker and Joel Bruckenstein wrote a superb practical guide on running and growing a virtual office for financial planning practices. If you ever wondered about how to have more time for your family or personal life pursuits, asked how you could serve your clients better, or add increasingly higher profits in declining or flat markets, this practical guide, written by practicing financial advisors can do more for you than any professional designation after your name. For example, the ability of a virtual assistant a 1000 miles away to annote and populate a scanned document such as a brokerage application with only client specific information, obtain signatures, electronically copy and deliver forms to a brokerage within a few days saves financial planners like me time, money and frustration in dealing with paper document management. With the SEC stamp of approval, there is simply no better way to track and manage docuements. It is like moving from the automobile to the airplane. Leave the traffic jams behind and take your practice to a whole new level with this must-read guidebook.

Excellent Guide to Planning Any Home Office.......2001-05-05
Many home design guides often assume you have unlimited space and money to design your home. This book contains examples on how to convert not just newly built large spaces, but even small odd shaped spaces, such as under stairwells and in attics into useful home offices. There are also many examples of the different furniture and decorating possibilities. A must have for anyone planning a serious home office.
Customer Reviews:
if you are doing your entire home...but the home planner!.......2007-03-19
i went with the cheaper of the two because of the dupliaction slant but you get no bathroom or kitchen parts/stickers....one of the main things people remodel! if this is for your house and you are building an office, improvise on the parts or rename them from the other set or splurge and get both. i was upset when i did not have all i needed but if it was just for an office....you get a great set to work with and have some extras for rearranging other areas later.
A lot of duplication.......2005-09-29
As a stand alone, this is a great tool.
But if you already own the Home Quick Planner, be aware that you already have 4 of the 5 pieces in the Office kit. There's only one sheet of "office" furniture. The rest of the Office kit duplicates most of the contents of the Home kit.
If this is the only planner you are buying, it's well worth the price. If you're buying it with the Home kit, it's not worth the money unless you insist on the specialized pieces.

This book literally lets you have your house in your hands!.......2007-07-30
There are a lot of organizational books on the market, some to help you get rid of clutter, some to help you organize your clutter into essential documents on file at your fingertips, some with places to write info about all types of rooms you have leaving lots of pages blank because you don't have certain rooms in your house that other people may have like a game room or sauna, but for the average homeowner, THIS book is all you need.
First of all, you get to 'name' your own rooms so there's no wasted space! You can label the pages in order of the flow of your house, so if your dining room is right next to your living room, the pages can be labeled that way, and the paint or carpet samples for each room will be close enough together in your book so that you're not flipping back and forth all the time. That alone means the book is much more relavant to you than most books on the market & if you want to include exterior features, or landscaping you can DO that quickly and neatly just by writing in the appropriate title on the next page.
The ABSOLUTELY BEST feature is that EVERY page has a big pocket for receipts, for magazine pictures you've pulled showing what you've done or what you'd like a remodeling project to look like, paint chips, photos, etc. For instance, I once found a picture in a magazine of an exterior doorway I wanted, with some modification, to use on the interior of an area we want to remodel. That was 14 years ago. Try holding onto a picture from a magazine for 14 years without losing it or damaging it! I DID, because I knew right where I'd put it -- I'd placed it in the pocket flap on the 'Future Loft' page, where it would eventually be the entrance door to our loft. Trying to tell a contractor how the door I wanted differed from hundreds of other mission-style doors on the market today would have been impossible without that picture to show the details of what I wanted in my door!
On top of the pockets being useful, each pocket has a grid where you can measure off and sketch your room -- you can sketch a floor plan or a wall with a window or several sketches if you want, it's up to you to use it however it will best suit your circumstances. And the pockets are sturdy enough to hold a LOT of loose pieces of paper, samples, etc. I carried a sort of thin sample of a brick around to match a color for a number of months! Now the brick DID cause some wear and tear on the pocket, but just being able to have it handy was GREAT! It meant I didn't lay it down somewhere in a store and leave it there. I reinforced the pocket with some tape and away I went with my brick sample!
If you're insistent on neat and tidy records, you might want to take some posterboard, cut it to fit the pocket, then staple your receipts or paint chips or whatever you decide you want to keep in your pockets to the posterboard so you can have a flipchart of information that you keep in the pocket, in an organized fashion. Pull out the posterboard, and just flip over to the item you're looking for! If you're REALLY anal about keeping things neat, use a photo refill page inside each pocket and slip your samples, swatches or pictures into the photo refill page so that you can pull out just one sample instead of pulling out the whole page if you want to.
My current book bulges to about 6" thick--and that's without the brick sample--because I've used it to keep remodeling ideas I WANT to do at my fingertips! I'm getting a new one now to track what I've actually done up to this point, and to get us through the remodeling we'll be doing this next year -- we're finally to the point financially where we can do most of what we want (I've been told by a couple of contractors that we should just move to a bigger place, but we'll have everything we need right here, once we remodel a few areas!) and I'll have everything recorded as it's done, in my new book, so it will be complete when the remodeling is done.
Eventually I can pass it on to new owners, when we can no longer take care of ourselves here and decide to sell, and it will help them to either freshen up what we did with the exact color code of paint, know the sizes of each space if they want to remodel, or keep track of their own swatches and chips if they decide to remake certain rooms!
The white plastic 'tooth' binding is wonderful because the book lies flat and expands some if you need extra room like I do!
This is the most appropriately named book I've seen in a loooooonnnnggg time -- "house in hand" is exactly what it is and "peace of mind" is what it provides!!!
Great for a New Home!.......2004-03-31
When I first moved into my home I didn't know where to start in decorating. This was long before HGTV, Trading Spaces, or other design shows. This planner was invaluable in helping me get everything together. I was able to take it with me to fabric stores, paint stores, etc. All my swatches, paint numbers and wallpaper samples were together, window measurements were readily available, as well as listings of painters, plumbers, appliance manufacturers, putting everything in one place. When I decided to move, it also helped. All room sizes were listed, as well as information on all appliances, as well as major renovations I had done to the house. My real estate agent said it helped in selling. And now, it's with the new owners.
Incredible Time Saver for Decorating Your Home.......2002-04-26
I bought this book during a remodel of our home. I still have it and use it for all my decorating. The pocket pages are the best for storing samples and the grid design is great for showing your room to perspective contractors. If you take it with you shopping, you will have all your information and color swatches with you for every project. It makes a wonderful gift for a new home owner, or for that first apartment.

Book Description
Buying desktop publishing software will not make you a professional graphic designer any more than buying a scalpel will make you a surgeon. As good as the software may be, it is only a tool. The missing ingredients are graphic design concepts and techniques. This 335- page book with hundreds of illustrations, will show you step-by-step, how to create sparkling graphic designs, efficient business forms and money-making Web sites. This unique publication is two books in one, a how-to-do-it book for desktop publishers and a college textbook.

Graphic Design for the 21st Century Desktop Publishers.......2004-07-11
Let me begin by saying that this book is an adequate "starter book" that does the basic job of setting up a graphic design career. It solidly defines that design cannot be handed to you through the use of a computer nor can you simply "pick-it-up" by reading this book. Those are great words of reality when it comes to the real world of graphic design - both in the business/advertising world and the Internet. No one should ever step into this field without a complete understanding of the principles of design (balance, harmony, repitition, etc) and computer skill. Lets face it, without the computer, most of the ads and design you see today would be gone.
Unfortunately, I felt this book fails to hit the quality of explanation needed to understand the "why" of design. I face it with my own high school and college students as well as my own freelance clients; the "why" of design always becomes the forefront of what is made. It takes more than small paragraphs of information to explain why deciding a photo vs. a raster image is correct for a particular design. Many different factors come into play that aren't fully described in this book. The text almost feels like a glorified glossary rather than a 'how-to" on graphic design.
I also found that the quality of the imagery is somewhat remedial and quite outdated. I would not show most of the visual examples to my students as I feel they are not up-to-date enough to follow current design trends and styles. Many are perfect for explaining the point at hand, but should be revamped for today's tastes and should include professional examples where the technique was applied.
In addition, I also felt that a few of the techniques described seemed to pull from the 1980's - before computer-based design was the mainstream. I still remember the days of physically cutting and pasting the images in place and the real pen & ink drawings!
Overall, I felt the book is good glossary for building a foundation of what graphic design is about, but I would not depend on this as an all-encompassing text for your career. I would in fact use the text as a source for my students to begin with, but would suppliment the examples with that of my own and would encourage more open collaboration on the ideas behind the design (Why does the design fit or not fit the client? What is the design focusing on? What is great about it? Why does it work or not work in this situation? Etc...). The book should also drive the reader into the realization that computers are the mainstream and that they are there as a very powerful tool to aid in your design and should be used whenever possible (for the fabrication, not the idea!). Even though the authors are not full-time designers (one is a typesetter and desktop publisher and the other is a business educator) they have created a decent book for the beginning student of graphic design.

Book Description
With parents who seek prosperity and enlightenment, JP Saalfield lives his life through financial ups-and-downs, various residences, separation from relatives, and a broad range of experiences, for just a young boy.
And he contends with ill health. At birth, he lacked oxygen. Just before age two, he contracted bronchiolitis. Thereafter, throughout the years, he had asthmatic attacks. At age sixteen, just before this book's publication, he came close to dying within seconds of reaching a hospital. His lungs took in no air. Yet, JP survived and is recovering. Throughout it all, he kept his dedication to the art of filmmaking, a passion he discovered and unleashed at age thirteen. As sailors who navigate the sea by a sky of constellations, JP's parents navigate their lives by a field of thoughts and feelings. Some ports held paradise, others held hell. All had their merit.

My thoughts............2003-08-24
I have only read the first chapter of this book (so basically you should ignore this review) but I find it disgusting that any parent would have the audacity to produce a book marvelling at their child's "genius" and expect anyone else to be interested. This is especially absurd since JP's films are for the most part completely mediocre and the product of a technically proficient, somewhat creative kid who's been given the best in filmmaking equipment by his parents. Ms. Gal's writing is acceptable but uninteresting to an amazing extent. She finds nothing insightful or fresh in her life, merely depicting the major events of JP's life as if he was already Steven Spielberg. Even were Spielberg himself the subject of this work, it would be a dull waste of paper. I'm sorry to be so brutal but the false modesty of this self-proclaimed "fool" and her son is grating. I hope Ms. Gal's suspense novels are better.
