This is an excellent source of information about slavery in the U.S. just before the Civil War. When proslavery critics of Harriet Beecher Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin (1851) charged that she did not accurately describe slavery, she published this fact-filled 1853 book demonstrating that her novel was accurate. This is a facsimile of an 1853 edition with the original small text enlarged to make it more easily read. There are no Adobe Reader restrictions on printing or copying. Teachers may freely make copies of up to up to 25 pages from this book for each student taking courses from them without written permission or royalty payment as long as at least one printed copy of the Inkling edition of this work is available for students in the school library.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Documentation of an Amazing Story.......2006-09-19

Upon publication of Uncle Tom's Cabin, HB Stowe was attacked immediately by pro-slavery writers. Her work was dismissed as fiction, an abolitionist's distorted view, and totally representing slavery in the South. Mrs. Stowe responded by collecting and expanding her factual documentation. She started to write a 25-page pamphlet, to be added as an appendix to the next edition of Cabin. But the work consumed her, as she confronted the stories of many escaped slaves, newspaper articles, court testimony, and even the text of state laws. The defense project grew to over 500 pages, and is a major work in its own right.

Frederick Douglas called it a major contribution to the war against slaveholders: "...for the 'Key' not only proves the correctness of every essential part of Uncle Tom's Cabin, but proves more and worse things against themurderous system than are alleged in that great book."

Historians and history teachers must have this book, as a reference and as an experience. Anyone who strives to understand the burning issues that ignited the War between the States needs this book. I recommend it.

If you're teaching or studying black history, the Inkling ebook edition of A Key to Uncle Tom's Cabin (ISBN: B000BGQ9E4) is a great bargain. You get an exact facsimile of the classic 1853 edition with the original small type enlarged to fit 8.5x11 inch pages for easier reading and printing.

Best of all, despite Amazon's boilerplate remarks about "most publishers do not allow e-books to be printed" none of the restrictive digital rights management is turned on. You can print and copy all the pages you like.

A lot of people make fun of Uncle Tom's Cabin, make fun of it's mid-nineenth century literary style and neglecting the enormous impact it has had. Here's what George Orwell, the author of two literary classics, Animal Farm and 1984, said about Uncle Tom's Cabin:

"A type of book which we hardly seem to produce in these days, but which flowered with great richness in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, is what Chesterton called the "good bad book": that is, the kind of book that has no literary pretensions but which remains readable when more serious productions have perished....

Perhaps the supreme example of the "good bad" book is Uncle Tom's Cabin. It is an unintentionally ludicrous book, full of preposterous melodramatic incidents; it is also deeply moving and essentially true; it is hard to say which quality outweighs the other. But Uncle Tom's Cabin, after all, is trying to be serious and to deal with the real world.... And by the same token I would back Uncle Tom's Cabin to outlive the complete works of Virginia Woolf or George Moore, though I know of no strictly literary test which would show where the superiority lies."

4 out of 5 stars Review.......2001-07-03

My reason for reading this book was to understand why some Blacks today are called 'Uncle Toms'. Once I began the book, I realized that I would have to stop looking at the book frrom the perspective of a Black woman in the year 2001. That the author was not a slave or a Black is very obvious, and her own misconceptions about Blacks are very disturbing. But she is, after all, writing from her the only point of view she knew. I found the book to be very engrossing, easy to read and also interesting enough to keep me from flipping to the end.

5 out of 5 stars "it was a good book and I could read it over and over again........1999-04-22

"Uncle Tom's Cabin was a very good book. I wouldn't encourage younger people like 4th and 5th graders to read it, but I think everyone needs to read it by the time they graduate from school."

Book Description

It starts as a lark for Jasmin Field, the charming, acerbically witty columnist for a national women's magazine.  She joins a host of celebraties gathering in London to audition for the season's most dazzling charity event:  a one-night only stage production of Jane Austen's immortal Pride and Prejudice, directed by and starring the Academy Award -- winning Hollywood heartthrob Harry Noble.  And nobody is more surprised than Jasmin herself when she lands the lead of handsome Harry's love interest, Elizabeth Bennet.  But things start to go very wrong very quickly.  Ms. Field's delicious contempt for the arrogant, overbearing Harry Noble goes from being wicked fun to infuriating.  Her brief moment of theatrical glory looks as if it's going to be overshadowed by the betrayal of her best friend, the disintegration of her family and the implosion of her career. And suddenly she can't remember a single one of her lines.  But, worst of all, Harry Noble -- who, incidentally, looks amazing in tight breeches -- has started to stare hard at Jazz with that sort of a glimmer in his eyes...

Fresh, wild, wonderfully romantic and absolutely hilarious, Pride, Prejudice and Jasmin Field is Jane Austen as the great lady herself never imagined it.

5 out of 5 stars I'm surprised it only has 3.5 stars..........2007-08-02

I love it that much. I'm a Jane Austen addict and I've read everything by her and about her so yeah being a bit of a purist myself, I see how purists may be a bit offended... but this book is sooooo fun and such happy reading that it's a little surprising that everyone doesn't love it... I think its loads better than Bridget Jones (both in general and as a modernization of P&P) though yes, I'll concede its in the same Brit chic lit singleton sort of sub-genre... but who was the original brit singleton if not Elizabeth Bennet? I think this book rocks. I definitely recognized the P&P in it but by itself I think it's a pretty good read. It's escapist, laugh out loud funny (I read this on a transatlantic flight and was guffawing at the funny bits and cringing at the embarrassing bits so much that my seat-mate asked what I was reading and where they could get some of that)... Jasmine Field makes my day anytime I read this and for Harry Noble, I just imagine Colin Firth and I'm set...

1 out of 5 stars I never thought it could be this bad.......2007-05-20

I'm sitting here trying to think of something good about this book, and I'm still at a loss. From exposition to end, the characterization is consitpated and the plot lines flabby. I love Jane Austen's book and most adaptations of it, but this book is not worthy of the title that it takes.

4 out of 5 stars Ingenious and Fun.......2007-05-10

It's hard to imagine a finer modernization of JA's P&P than this, with the exception of some under-developed plot lines, and a few poor choices of crude or vulgar language. The weaker plot lines are minor, such as the parallel to Lydia's being ruined, which I won't go into so I don't spoil the book for anyone. However, if you're familiar with Austen's novel, you will recognize what's coming in this one, but it's still a lot of fun. (You don't get the same degree or sense of social scandal to the family, as with Lydia and the Bennets, but perhaps that's why this book is more light-hearted and easy reading.) The bad language (occasional) also "jarred" with the atmosphere of what the author was trying to do, I think., and made it somewhat less enjoyable, but there isn't a great deal of it, thankfully. I opened it just to get a sense of the tone, and I ended up having to finish it. Dinner was late for the family! I'll probably want to read this one again sometime, too.

4 out of 5 stars Great Update of P&P.......2007-04-10

Melissa Nathan's update of P&P is fun to read. I loved Jasmin Field's spirit, one very much like Elizabeth Bennet's. There were parts, admittedly, which were "stretched" to fit the many twists and turns of P & P. Yet, Ms. Nathan achieves this in a very witty novel. Her explanation of how Darcy is feeling when he dances with Elizabeth is one of the best I have ever read. She truly captures the pain Darcy experiences during this time in the original novel. Having Jasmin and Harry act out the part and explain what they hoped to achieve in the scene was like reading an annotated version of the original. See pp. 145-146 to see what I mean. Also, some of the underlying "feminism" concepts are addressed. On page 52 when Jasmin reiterates what it means to be a woman in the modern world, I could hear Elizabeth Bennet checking off her list in Regency England. You will enjoy this adaptation.

3 out of 5 stars She could have at least tried to make it original..........2006-12-05

I am a huge fan of the real Pride and Prejudice; therefore, it's always nice to read a decent sequel or adaptation. This book was exactly that--decent--but that's as far as it went. It was so ridiculously close to the original novel that I find myself wondering if Ms. Nathan has ever had an original thought in her life. That said, it was still a cute book, and seeing as it was so close to the original storyline, I would be hard pressed to not enjoy it at least a little bit. If you're like me, always looking for books that are spin-offs of Jane Austen's, this book is worth a try!

5 out of 5 stars JPII's Call to Bishops and Their Flock in "Rise".......2006-04-14

The cover of this remarkable book, published less than a year before Pope John Paul II's death, shows the Pontiff nearly hidden while looking up at Christ's cross. It reminds us again the man called "John Paul the Great" raised Christ even as the world raised him during his legendary papacy's final months.

"Rise, Let Us Be On Our Way" could not have arrived more timely. Here the Holy Father (once Archbishop Karol Wojtyla of Krakow) wrote for and about bishops, a position and vocation many lay Catholics see as administrative and hierarchical, and others criticized after Church abuse scandals. In easily readable, autobiographical meditations he addresses bishop's roles as shepherds and emphasizes relationships they need to have with their cultural influences (philosophy, science) along with diocese, parishes and people they serve.

Many Catholics will find JPII's description of ceremonies and ceremonials associated with the bishop (metier, crozier, ring, his Install Mass) intriguing and informative, especially when many only see their bishop at sacramental events like Confirmation. But JPII's reflections on his years as bishop make "Rise" a must read.

The Pontiff writes warmly of years nurturing and growing Church traditions and feasts amid Nazi, then Communist occupation and hinderance (even attempts to marginalize St. Nicholas and disrupt church processions). He refers to saints he admired and who inspired him: St. Stanislas (to whom he wrote a poem quoted here), St. Leonard, St. Queen Hedwig. He mentions saints he recognized and canonized: St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross, St. Maximillian Kolbe and others murdered at Nazi hands in WWII. He then saves kind words for Joseph Ratzinger, his successor. (Of the future Pope Benedict XVI he writes, "I thank God for the prescence and the assistance of this great man...a trusted friend.")

Pope John Paul II also reflects on pilgrmages to young people in the Philippines and Krakow's Oasis movement(quoting a still-popular hymn sung to him on that trip.) Love for and outreach to the young, a theme of his papacy, leads to a dissertation on St. Joseph as model for fatherhood and leadership for laity and bishops alike.

It also leads the Holy Father to a philosophy eschewing the anonymous crowd for a more personal term "multitude," and removing "my" from his vocabulary to focus selflessly on Christ. When he says, "Personally, I have never felt lonely," you can only sense the closeness to Christ allowing few, especially in a position the world reveres, to feel such.

The title quotes Christ's words to His apostles as they go from the Garden of Gethsemane to His Passion and death. As with nearly everything Pope John Paul II wrote, spoke, and lived, it's reflection on the past and call to action. This book comprises quick, easily readable meditation, reflection, teaching, and philosophy, and merits space in any Catholic library.

5 out of 5 stars Continuing the Journey of a great man.......2006-01-15

This book follows up where Memory and Identity had left off, through the episcopacy of John Paul II up to his pontificate. Like all his writing it is beautiful. There were only a few passages where the style changed somewhat and it became more of a laundry list (and then I did this, after that I did that, then I did that) rather than a flowing narrative. Overall though this is a beautiful book. It's amazing to see so clearly how God acts in any given life. It is a useful reminder though, that just as freely and clearly as we can see his actions in the life of John Paul, so too must he be acting in our life, it may just be more difficult to see.

    4 out of 5 stars A treasure falls short.......2005-10-10

This would be a great book if written by any other person. But, relative to other books I've read that were written by other Popes, it fell short of my expectations - but, it certainly rates a sound 'good.' One might consider the other side of the 'John Paul Coin' - the liberal side - Albino Luciani or John Paul I - the valiant champion of basic human dignity for women, the handicapped. orphans, homosexuals, the remarried and others who are scorned in their everyday lives by doctrine. I would suggest a look at Lucien Gregoire's PAUPER WHO WOULD BE POPE - the only existing complete biography of John Paul I. Two good men - two very different sides of the coin.

    5 out of 5 stars It's worth it! It's worth it!.......2005-09-10

Like a trumpeter's clarion call to everybody within earshot, a group of young people voiced their enthusiasm to an aged man in white whose message once again reached to the core and inspired his listeners to action. The occasion was a pilgrimage in 2003 to Madrid, Spain, and the stooped man was Pope John Paul II. Reflecting back from the twilight of his life on events such as this one, the late pontiff tells his story of love and dedication.

It is a story most definitely worth reading, for John Paul shares his vision with us. He relates about himself as a loving father who cares for the spiritual well-being of his people and guides them toward their eternal destiny. John Paul focuses mainly on his calling to fulfill the responsibilities of the ecclesiastical office of bishop. To John Paul, a bishop is above all a pastor, a shepherd of souls after the manner of Jesus himself.

John Paul also expresses his gratitude to the many wonderful colleagues who helped him along the way. One in particular he describes as a "great man" and a "trusted friend," his successor the former Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger. What a wonderful testimony that bore fruit as the other cardinals entrusted the papacy to this same man who is now Pope Benedict XVI!

John Paul concludes with profiles in courage of some of his personal heroes. As he finished the book in 2004, John Paul did not realize that in the next year, he would rewrite the final chapter with his own life as it ebbed away. Although John Paul died a painful death, he left an enduring legacy of hope -- for he died in faith, a faith modeled by his spiritual father Abraham. "Rise, let us be on our way," for the day of the Lord will come. John Paul echoes this charge of Jesus at the very end, urging his fellow bishops (and us, too, as we follow their lead) to stride forward, full of trust in the Lord. It's worth it! Rev. Dennis J. Mercieri

    4 out of 5 stars A True Pastor.......2005-06-09

I started reading this book after the passing of the late and great John Paul II and it brought me closer to the man and to the essense of who he was: a Pastor.

John Paul II was Pope and Supreme Pontiff of the Roman Catholic Church, but his office was that of bishop, a role he began many years earlier in Poland.

This book traces that journey from Poland to Rome, and John Paul speaks of what it is to be a bishop, taking up the symbols of his office and explaining their deep significance.

What you learn from this book is that John Paul was a man who operated in a meditative way, always from reflection. He took his pastoral responsibilities seriously, and he took human beings seriously.

He writes that as a Pastor of souls he never attempted to put people into catergories, but saw each person as a unique human being and endevoured to understand and love that person. In this way, John Paul was truly Christlike.

This book is well worth reading if a) you want to know more about the person of John Paul II and b) if you wish to understand what the role of a bishop is.

In the last decade, icewine has become a phenomenonamong wime lovers. Like many good things, it had accidental beginnings, an early frost caught grapes still on the vine. The desparate wine maker pressed the grapes anyway, and voila, a rich dessert wine was discovered. For a long time icewine, or Eiswein, was only made in Germany and Austria on those rare temperate occasions, maybe once a decade. Now however, with the introduction of grape varieties to cooler climates and the development of new wineries all over the world, icewine is being produced every year to great acclaim from wine enthusiasts. This book features an in-depth exploration into all the offerings of this rather newly developed and deliciously sweet varietal.

5 out of 5 stars Everything about Bakelite Pins....and MORE!.......2005-02-07

As a long time Bakelite jewelry collector who has just about every book ever written about Bakelite, I didn't think there was much more that could be said about Bakelite Pins- but Karima Parry has done it again. This is not another "Hey, look what I've got" book written by a collector just to show off their collection. Only a few of the pins shown in this book are from Parry's own collection. And, like some of the Bakelite jewelry books out there, it isn't a compendium of the finest Bakelite pins in existence- you know, the ones that most collectors are never going to find, or be able to afford. This book shows a range of Bakelite pins, from very simple and affordable, right up to several of those rare showpiece pins that all Bakelite collectors lust after. Bakelite pins are examined from the perspective of their design and craftsmanship, tracing the evolution of both from the late 1920s right up to the present pieces being made by a few modern Bakelite artists like Ron and Ester Shultz and Bruce and Vicki Pantti. Instead of just presenting pin after pin, Parry discusses the different design trends in the early to mid 20th century that influenced Bakelite pin makers, and she offers a unique insight into the pins. But true to form, the author is careful to make this book a useful reference for collectors. Every pin is shown in full color, with pertinent details and a price range, and the pins are well organized by subject. Most of all, this is not just a picture book, or a collector guide. This concise study of Bakelite Pins is a short, beautifully illustrated lesson in art history, as viewed through the micro lens of Bakelite pins.

                5 out of 5 stars a pioneer and still a strong resource.......2006-11-29

Way back when I was first interested in seriously improving my skills, this book was about the only thing I could find anywhere. Maddening to look through a dozen similar books on watercolor flowers when you wanted to do knights and dragons. Now, at last, there are a lot of books on the subject, but this book is still one of the best. Not just how to, but a collection of inspirational sources for experimenting with.

                3 out of 5 stars Encyclopedia is a bit misleading a title........2005-01-10

I would more call this book an overview of fantasy and science fiction art techniques, for it does not have the scope or detail included to merit the title "Encyclopedia". Art tools and materials are covered so superficially as to not really merit inclusion at all. Certain basic drawing techniques such as characterization and perspective are covered briefly in 2-4 pages, but are only really useful to those with some basic drawing skills already.

What this book is perhaps best used for is as a source for inspiration, giving some nice examples of work by many masters of the field such as Jael, Jim Burns, David A. Hardy, and Boris Vallejo. Different subgenres of fantasy art are covered from space art to horror, and it is nice that the images are all reproduced in color (unlike some art books which try to save money and reproduce most images in black and white.)

This volume alone will not turn someone into a master fantasy artist overnight, nor is it one of the better overviews of the field that I have seen. Still, for someone just looking to explore the field of science-fiction/fantasy art in more detail and curious about some of the techniques and styles used, this is not a bad volume to add to your collection.

3 out of 5 stars Books won't do it all.......2004-03-13

Every book has some points or knowledge that will help us do better, but to expect a book by Vallejo or Michael Whelan to turn us into an artist of their caliber is asking a bit much. The most one can expect is to pick up some techniques or helpful hints. This isn't a bad book, it just can't be the book. The Artist's Manual, The Illustrator's Bible, and a variety of good artistic anatomy books are well worth the penny for even people who want to draw or paint in the Science Fiction or Fantasy mode. Keep in mind that good art is just that, good art, regardless of pigeonholing things into categories. A lot of us would like to just get the shortcut to no sweat greatness, but that usually is more of fantasy than anything else. Look at non-specialized technique books as well as ones with Science Fiction or Fantasy on the covers.

                4 out of 5 stars Too comics-heavy.......2003-06-19

The authors (artists) give you interesting lesson plans for drawing Fantasy Art in diferent techniques. Unfortunately, a lot of their examples come from comic book art. While I feel that comic books are an art form (probably one of the most difficult ones to master) I wanted more traditional fare, like Frazetta, Boris, pen-and-ink pulp, and like that.
It's still fun to follow the lesson plan. Give it a try.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Choice !.......2003-04-21

This is one of my all time favorites. It doesn't take the pencil out of your hand and draw for you, but it gives wonderful examples and descriptions of a variety of sci-fi and fantasy techniques. Sections include Body Language, Distortion of Form, Exaggeration, False Perspective, Human and Humanoid, Illusion of Space and Depth, Alien Landscapes, Lighting, Implausible and Impossible Structures, Juxtaposition. It's really a great book.

I purchased this book thinking it might help me build a mantel shelf and found it to be worthless. This book is an lengthy advertisement to try to sell mantels. I don't recommend it as one can purchase a magazine to view pretty pictures of mantels.

I'm an ole timey (senior citizen) fireplace builder for 51 years. This book was fun for me and is choice for learning secrets about a useful fireplace. Hey author, I like your classy and easy mantels and build some but I can't find any book anywhere that has a bunch of more complicated mantel plans that I can sharpen my beever teeth on. Help me anyone!! Good job on this book but please write a new one quick for us ole timey builders. I need pricey mantel ideas to put in my toolbox.

5 out of 5 stars Good for remodelers.......2003-01-22

Me and my husband have bilt and remodeled since 1939. That's lots of work. I bought him this book which he says is the best. He likes it for the details about new fireplace types such as the gasless. He also got good ideas on easy mantels. Buy it for your own good.

5 out of 5 stars Great Homeowners Resource!.......2003-01-13

My wife and I recently bought a new house and wanted to install a fireplace. We knew little about fireplace technology or what manufacturers offered. I had no idea until I read this book that there were so many options. The book describes in detail not only the many options but how they work and whether they're appropriate for your particular fireplace. The book also gave us great inspiration with choosing a mantel design. The book contains several mantel designs and how to build each one. The beautiful photos and construction illustrations were very helpful when we built ours. The big fireplace suppliers are also noted in the book with lots of helpful photos of their offerings. For myself, the wealth of knowledge I gained about fireplaces was priceless and very easy to read! I would recommend this book to anyone who is thinking about adding a fireplace to your home or redesigning an existing one.

5 out of 5 stars This book helped me a lot.......2003-01-13

I usually don't write book reviews but felt I should since I really disagee with the reviewers who gave this book one star. This book doesn't have any advertisements. It contains over 20 original mantel designs that my wife and I felt we could build from common materials. I am not an experienced craftsman, but this book helped me gain the confidence I needed to begin the project. We are quite pleased with the results. I built the "Oak Manor" mantel which was simple to build and was completed in a week of my spare time. Our friends can't believe how good it looks and I have loaned this book several times. The next fireplace I build I would like to be a ventless since this book answered all my technical questions and gave me several ideas on where and how to install various types of fieplaces. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to know more about fireplaces and would like to build their own mantel.

                      Book Description

Through four releases of Macromedia's industry-standard web graphics software program, James Mohler has become the indispensable resource for those looking to master the power of Flash. Flash MX 2004: Graphics, Animation & Interactivity delivers Mohler's widely praised hands-on approach to learning the newest version of Macromedia Flash. Exercises and examples int he book and on the back-of-book CD, combined with the written material, provide the best of both worlds - not just telling you how Flash works, but showing you as well. For those new to Flash, there are plenty of exercises designed to get users up to speed quickly. Intermediate and advanced Flash users will find new exercises that demonstrate the latest features of MX 2004 as well as a valuable series of examples that illustrate some of the more complex elements of the software. The book features chapters on graphic techniques, bitmap graphic integration, typography and text, symbols, libraries, sound, animation, and interactive techniques - plus an essential introduction to Flash's internal scripting language, ActionScript.

5 out of 5 stars A few mistakes but overall great.......2005-06-10

All in all, this is a great book. I am still going to give it 5 stars despite some errors.

As other reviewers said, some of the instructions for the exercises in the book don't match up exactly with the files on the CD. For instance, one step told me to add a symbol to the stage from the library that wasn't in the library of the file I was supposed to be using. However, most of these mistakes are small and can be easily worked around.

As a whole, the book is well-written, clear, and accessible for the Flash beginner. The layout is nice, and the indented hints are helpful. The training projects teach very useful techniques. The index is complete and makes the book especially easy to navigate. Some of the sections of the book are a little "too" extensive for the intermediate-advanced user, but non-beginners could just skim these sections.

I highly recommend this book to those wanting to get a good grasp on Flash concepts and basic techniques that are useful in many applications. Other books may have more extensive sections on Flash web page development, but as far as "graphics, animation, & interactivity" go, this is an excellent book.

3 out of 5 stars Decent book: Missing instructions & errors makes it hard.......2004-05-27

I got this book to learn Flash MX 2004 and while I did find it helpful and informative, I found that missing steps in some exercises forced me to take my mind off learning the techniques involved and left me scratching my head. Some times I could examine the sample files on the CD and figure it out for myself. Other times I just got frustrated and skipped on to the next section -- hoping I'd find another source on how to do whatever it was I skipped should I need it in the future.

The author's lack of naming of symbols and letting Flash label them (Symbol 1, Symbol 2...) made it difficult to take the samples apart to figure them out on my own. In one exercise you are told to create two symbols yet the sample file has 25 symbols. Huh?

A keyDown events exercise has "mouseDown" trace responses? The instructions say to "Select Press from the list." for a mouse event yet the sample code and references are on "release?"

I found the references to the way Director works a bit distracting as I've never used Director. Might be useful to some but why not sidebar it or stick that in an appendix so the rest of us and skip it? Maybe put the 3D chapter there, too, since you really need to use another app to do it

I was hoping to find errata material on the publisher's web site to make up for the book's shortcomings as it really does have potential and I have learned from it. Nope. Sigh.

This might be a good classroom book with an instructor supplying the missing pieces and an copy editor having gone through the text. As a learn on your own book there's a lot of room for improvement.

4 out of 5 stars Good intro to Flash.......2004-05-13

Being completely new to Flash and any kind of media development, Mohler's book was a great place to start for me. It provides numerous exercises throughout the book so that the reader can get hands-on experience while learning about Flash. Many of the exercises are quite useful and some of the techniques I was able to use immediately for the project I am working on. Each topic covered: 2D animation, 3D animation, video, sound, ActionScript gives enough of the information to the reader so one can continue exploration on their own. I will say that ActionScript treatment was a little too basic (that may be a software engineer in me speaking), so I bought two additional books about it. Also there are some errata, but think of them as trick questions to test your understanding. :-)
Overall, this book is a great place for a newbie to get started with Flash.

                      4 out of 5 stars consistently useful.......2003-11-21

As an instructor of Flash, I have used, since version 4, James Mohler's Flash book as a supplement to my course content. For Flash MX 2004, Mohler has kept with his consistent, user-friendly style of writing and accessible way to instruct a somewhat complicated program.

                      4 out of 5 stars Very thorough.......2003-11-18

This book is jam packed full of great stuff. The illustrations are excellent and a lot of subjects are covered in detail. It goes beyond what you get in some other beginning books. It's well written and the CD has a lot of good stuff.
