Beautiful, Powerful, and Brave.......2006-03-16

Olympia Vernon's words always sing, but never more powerfully than in this strong, brave, unflinching look at hate and love. The novel reads like a song, like something that wasn't made up by one immensely talented young novelist but was a truth always with us from a time long before: a psalm, a ballad, a folk song. Her characters rocket toward their fates with the tragic inevitability of opera. Vernon's language is poetry of such stark originality that it sometimes seems like a new tongue. In its fresh and alarming syntax, the sad old drama of racial hatred and intolerance cuts through contemporary complacency like a hacksaw through living bone.

Truth never grows stale in the telling. Crucial, terrible truths--cruelty, racism, hatred, bigotry--are the dark shadows against which light, if any of us are capable of generating any light at all, must be seen. Vernon's Mississippi lightbringers shine out against their darknesses with courage and love and the need for redemption, alive to small beauties like hummingbirds, leafy forests, loving marriages and one good dog. A reader emerges from the time in their company like a listener after a hymn well sung, but one that packs a punch and isn't afraid to pull off a surprise or two.

As a nation, we would do well to continue the honest racial dialogue Vernon's begun here, because she's not one to look away from hard facts and hide her head in the sand. Too many of us, black and white, talk at each other rather than TO each other. But this book, a product of the author's artless way with words, is a truth-teller and page-turner of the highest order. You know who the good guys are, and you love them and root for them not because they are abstracts of goodness, but because they live and breathe and sweat and fear.

Olympia Vernon is a national treasure. The common ground she provides us with here is something that can support the weight of mighty, mighty beauty.

poor effort from LLM.......2007-04-17

I usually enjoy LLM's books and find her to be dependably good, and an author I look for on the shelves. There are no problems with her writing ability in this novel, but the characters are off-putting and the "dark secret" guarded by Adam is ridiculous. Unfortunately, the majority of the plot revolves around it. This could have been a really great book about a woman doctor who struggles to establish herself in the nineteenth century, but that potentially rich source of detail and plot was ignored, reducing Banner to cleaning wounds and walking around mooney-eyed. She also retreated to her bedroom alot. I can't imagine any doctor of that era and in that setting having so much free time to fling herself across the bed and cry over her boyfriend. There was very little doctoring from Banner, which further weakens the story. A woman physician who had to battle her way through medical school would surely have had more grit, more maturity, and more passion for her work than Banner, who didn't seem to remember she was a doctor after she first clapped eyes on Adam. I found her to be unsympathetic and shallow, and Adam similarly functioned at the emotional level of an adolescent. In that context, the fact that Adam spanked Banner and she just accepted it as the family strategy for dealing with naughty wives was one of the few elements of the book where the characters' actions were completely believable. All in all, I was really disappointed by this effort from an author I read often.

I love this book- I really enjoy the relationship between these two headstrong doctors. This book and the rest in the series are worth your time.

A little too hard to believe.......2005-10-21

I enjoy reading Linda Lael Miller books, but I had several problems with this book.
1. He spanks her. I realize that in the past that this was something that men did to women, because they were treated more as children then women, but Banner has been abused by her first husband so I couldn't understand how she could accept that Dr. Adam Corbin spanked her and then be OKAY with it. I would imagine most women who had been abused would not handle this type of physical contact with another man very well. In the book Banner also states that she knows Adam would never physically harm her and then he does. HHHHHMMMM!!!
2. Adam keeps secrets to the point of Banner thinking he's cheating. He never tries to explain his actions, just expects her to trust (I would imagine this would be difficult for a woman with trust issues to do). He's not cheating on her but dicides that since he is going to be blamed for it he might as well commit the sin of adultery. He doesn't but still come on. What a tangled web we weave....and he doesn't get that this is his fault...but rather her lack of trust. PLEASE!!!!
3. After everything is pretty much settled Banner asks Adam if they were ever seperated for several months if he would find a mistress and he answers that he doesn't know. In this same vein towards the end of the book Banner is very pregnant which has led to abstinence for two months and she is wondering if Adam visits the local brothel. I feel bad for Banner she'll never feel completely secure about Adam and whether or not he can remain faithful to her, some of these things just didn't feel right to me. On the other side of this coin why is it in books that if the leading women are pregnant and they have to abstain from sex with their husbands there is a feeling of guilt??? I've never understood this, its not easy to carry a child and then give birth. Stop the guilt it just seems silly.

This started out slow and trite and stayed that way. I never finished it. just didn't think it had any redeeming value.

The new "doc" in town........2002-06-21

"Banner O'Brien" is another great book by Linda Lael Miller. I loved it. Banner is a strong, courageous, fiesty female who earned her doctor's degree and deserved to practice. So what she is a female. It was time for a change and Banner was just the person to initiate the change.

Banner came to town to help another doctor who was injured and meets Dr. Adam Corbin, the source of the other doctor's injury. Banner's and Adam's coming together is rocky at first, but as each put their differences aside and love enters, their situation gradually smooths out. Adam no longer sees Banner as a rival and a doctor, but as the woman he loves. In turn, Banner returns his feelings. Banner is indeed just what the doctor ordered!

"Banner O'Brien" is the beggining of the Corbin legacy. A great series and great reading. I loved them all.

To be or not to be human..........2006-06-19

Genetopia is about a dangerous world and its inhabitants. It's not a dangerous world because it's filled with monsters but because it can make a monster of anyone who touches, drinks, breathes, or walks in the wrong place. Nano- and biotechnology got into the wild a long time before our story, and True humans are doing everything they can to remain the dominant species. In this world any deviation from the norm can mark you as non-human and cost you your liberty or your life.

It's a marvelously rich book about what it means to be human and where we'll go in the future. It's also about a boy's journey into manhood and all the lessons he learns. In many ways this reminded me of Huckleberry Finn. It's a book that makes you think and that makes it a book worth reading. For the complete review see the February issue of SFRevu.com.

superb parable disguised as a thriller.......2006-02-17

In the ancient settlement Trecosann, Flintreco Eltarn notices by her playful flirting with the Tallyman that his younger sister by four years Amberlinetreco is on the verge of maturing into a young woman. Still he rejoices that there remains enough of the child that he grew up with.

However, during a Treco clan gala, Flint cannot find Amber; he soon concludes that she is simply gone. No one seems concerned except Flint who knows she may have decided she had enough abuse from their cruel father and left on her own accord; however more likely Flint assumes the worst that slavers abducted her thinking she is a mutt for market. Feeling nothing toward any other member except perhaps hatred of his father, Flint decides over the objection of his kin, to search for the only family member he cares about, Amber; when he finds her as expects to do he will insure her safety even if he has to battle slavers and slave owners.

The above two paragraphs are the opening gambit in a futuristic tale in which biotechnology has gotten out of control. There are a few purebred humans who are subject to being tossed into the changing vats. There are also Mutts who are slaves whispering that one day they will be free; obvious parallels to the slavery of this country add depth. This is a thought provoking science fiction story that is more a coming of age tale that condemns any "ology" or ism that cause harm. The fascinating story line contains several interesting spins. For instance ironically the audience knows up front what happened to Amber while Flint can only conjecture while he learns who he is in a world off kilter, as Amber is just the mechanism to propel the hero to begin his quest. Fans of deep thrillers will appreciate this fine parable of a man frightened by what the future holds, but sets forth anyway.

Peacebuilding in Practice.......2005-05-16

It seems people are under a misconception that peacebuilding needs to be the work of those assumed to be pacifist, idealistic, and not very practical. The field is often stereotyped into a sort of touchy-feely soft social science with no "real world" applicability. Dr. Schirch's book looks beyond those mistaken assumptions towards real understanding and action. This book looks into the heart of what the causes of conflict are, what skills are necessary to improve communication and lessen direct violence, and more importantly, what needs (material, social and symbolic) must be met to break the cycle of violence. This book provides the reader with an understandable, and straightforward framework to begin to understand, address, and reduce conflict in our world.

Great guide for Conflict Transformation Practitioners.......2005-05-14

Lisa Schirch has written an excellent, accessible book on strategic peacebuilding, perfect for practitioners but also those who are interested in learning more about this emerging profession. The strength of her book lies in its ability to communicate complex theories in everyday language. Though small in size, it covers the essentials of conflict transformation theory and practice. Additionally, it encourages the reader to think about doing this work intentionally and strategically. I would highly recommend it to anyone interesting in learning more about approaches to peacebuilding.

A common language is one of the first basics of creating a constant, stable change in any kind of transformation, especially in a conflict situation.
This is the first time that I have found a book that considers different approaches and definitions of peace related work in one book and in a clear, easy to understand framework.

"The Little Book of Strategic Peacebuilding" defines and summarizes Peacebuilding in a way that enables practitioners and social agents to speak the same language and enables us to deliver a clear consistent message that can be easily conveyed to the public.

The author brings together many aspects of Peacebuilding and helps us find ways to initiate systematic strategies that can reduce and eventually eliminate cycles of violence. The book enables us to understand, in a broader sense, the framework that needs to be in place in order to create
a change.

While reading and using this book I was introduced to several new
approaches in the field of Peacebuilding. This helped me focus on
approaches that fit the context I am working in (the Israeli-Palestinian conflict), and find new, innovative ways to bring hope that change can take place even in places and during times that it seems next to impossible.

This is "a must have" book for anyone who is interested in creating a transformation in their environment and working towards holistic well-being.

All you need to know about peacebuilding!.......2005-05-11

This is such an impressive little book. The peacebuilding field can be complicated and loaded with jargon. This sometimes makes talking about peace issues seem limited to those who have academic understanding of the social sciences. What Schirch has managed to do is take some very complex concepts and make them easy to understand. This is an eminently readable book and would commend it to anyone serious about making this a more peaceful and secure world.

Lisa Shirch's book on Strategic Peacebuilding is a must read for those seeking more effective ways at building peace from the grassroots to track 1 levels. It is a clear and concise overview of the field of peacebuilding and how all of our efforts fit in and contribute (or not) to a lasting peace.

I originally purchased this book with a feeling that it would help me become a better negotiator and that it would have some steps that outline effective negotiating strategies. After reading the book I was left with a sense of disappointment because the only thing that I can appreciate from this book is the author's focus on "negotiating context" which is what this book should have been called. It seems that explaining and understanding what "context" is , was the focus of this book. Basic negotiations are not really covered in this book if at all, at least not to the extent that a novice such as myself can use. Not a good book for a novice negotiator. In the end you get what you pay for here. THE BOOK COSTS $5. THE END.

A freind was visiting from out of town and talked about a terrific french toast she had made. The receipe book " The Best of the Best and More" has brought fun to my cooking again. Easy to follow, funny sayings at the bottom of pages and a real ease in picking out our next meal. I have recommended this book to all my friends.

Good overview and roadmap to collecting areas........2000-07-13

As the author states, this is not meant to be a comprehensive volume. The field of ancient coins from non-classical cultures is so wide, that I think it is wonderful that someone took the time to assemble an overview that helps the beginner to start recognizing types, and then points them in the right direction. This is especially useful in a field where references for very narrow segment of the coinage are hard to find, and most often very expensive. I myself have invested in a book or two that sounded as if it would carry my field of interest--only to leave me out in the cold, with a very empty wallet!

I only wish that Wayne Sayles could continue this series to cover coinage from India, Ceylon/Sri Lanka, and Asia as well. An excellent book for those new to the field, or looking to expand their ancient coin collecting interests outside the Classical World.

Too broad of a spectrum.......2000-06-28

I have bought and read almost all of the books in this series and definitely this is the one that satisfied me the least. In trying to squeeze too many cultures living in too broad of a time frame in just one regular sized book, the reader is just confused on the relation between the choices of cultures displayed. Most of the individual sections are just too short to show the coinage and much less the history of these peoples. One should approach this book as a long, long magazine article that presents some non classical cultures and just that. It is not even a book, as the others in the series are, that entices you to look deeper into the bibliography and that at least gives you the 'big picture'. This book only succeeds in confusing and making the coinage of those already almost unknown cultures a little bit more obscure.

(Never heard of hypermoderns? They are collectible books recently published. A first edition of Sue Grafton's A Is for Alibi sold for $1,250 in 1998. Better check your shelves.)

Both the avid bibliophile and the casual reader will find things to enjoy in Slightly Chipped. For the collector, the Goldstones' discussion of the Internet's impact on collecting is illuminating, and their look at the hypermodern market is positively eye-opening. Plus, visits to such places as the Rosenbach Museum in Philadelphia and the Pequot Library in Connecticut will get any bibliophile's salivary glands going. For the casual reader, Slightly Chipped is as warm and engaging as Used and Rare; although the Goldstones have become sophisticated book collectors, there is still plenty of the ingenuous surprise and delight that made Used and Rare such a joy to read. They balance out the serious aspects of book collecting with a liberal peppering of literary anecdotes, ranging from William Morris's tyrannical leadership of the Kelmscott Press to the sexual proclivities of Virginia Woolf and the Bloomsbury Group, keeping the tone light and the pace lively. Excellent inspirations and reference book for the designer.......2000-06-19

If you've ever had a client that said, "how fast can you design a logo for me?" or, "can you 'whip up' some business cards for me by next monday?" then you know what it's like to have an unrealistic deadline and also be drained of your creative juices.

This book shows some of the best business cards and letter heads you've ever seen. They can really get those creative synapses firing away and get you inspired to develop a new layout you would have never thought of otherwise. I have this book on my reference shelf and I consult it quite a bit. Some (but not all) of the letterheads and business cards identify the type of paper and the cost associated with production which can be very insightful and prevent you from being "too inspired" and go beyond budget.

Ideas are timeless and useful for more than just Letterhead........2004-01-13

There is something about this book that is intriguing. I purchased it a year and a half ago and I find it to be one of the most inspirational books to turn to when I want ideas for print design, web graphics, or just something refreshing to look at. It has everything from colorful modern corporate design, to dark, industrial Nine Inch Nails type of artwork.

I constantly use this for reference and I highly recommend it for anyone designing Letterhead, Business Cards, or people who want a book to flip through for artistic inspiration.

Another great book from the series. Loads of ideas varying in imagery, logos, paper types and printing techniques. Definitely eye-opening on the amount of design options on all business cards, letterheads, and don't forget the envelopes ... always picked up in our studio for ideas and to kick those those creative juices into action!
