Rosamond Vivian, brought up on a remote island by an indifferent grandfather, swears she'd sell her soul to Satan for a year of freedom. When Philip Tempest enters her life, she is ripe for the plucking, but is soon caught up in a web of intrigue, cruelty and deceit stretching back far into the past. Remarkable for its portrayal of a sensual, spirited Victorian heroine, Louisa May Alcott's work, too shocking to be published during her lifetime, tells a compulsive tale of love, desire and deceit. Its publication more than a century after being written marks a new page in literary history.
Book Description
"I'd gladly sell my soul to Satan for a year of freedom," cries impetuous Rosamond Vivian to her callous grandfather. Then, one stormy night, a brooding stranger appears in her remote island home, ready to take Rosamond to her word. Spellbound by the mysterious Philip Tempest, Rosamond is seduced with promises of love and freedom, then spirited away on Tempest's sumptuous yacht. But she soon finds herself trapped in a web of intrigue, cruelty, and deceit. Desperate to escape, she flees to Italy, France, and Germany, from Parisian garret to mental asylum, from convent to chateau, as Tempest stalks every step of the fiery beauty who has become his obsession.
A story of dark love and passionate obsession that was considered "too sensational" to be published in the authors lifetime, A Long Fatal Love Chase was written for magazine serialization in 1866, two years before the publication of Little Women. Buried among Louisa May Alcott's papers for more than a century, its publication is a literary landmark--a novel that is bold, timeless, and mesmerizing."
Customer Reviews:
This Was Terrible.......2007-05-30
Yes, it was long, much too long - the reason it never got published back in 1868.
We're never told the year the story begins, but from a footnote about Nice being part of Sardinia before 1860, apparently it's set before 1860.
Rosamund is an 18 year old woman living with her disinterested grandfather in a house on an island (which we learn later must be off England somewhere). She's quite bored, and when a stranger appears, she becomes childishly enamored of his freedom and mysteriousness.
The book is written in a style which might have been attractive to some women in the 1860's, but it's definitely not now. For the first half of the book, Rosamond's beauty is extolled in almost every paragraph, lest we ever forget: She's beautiful! What's so beautiful about her? Well, we're not to know that, except sometimes she's fresh and rosy, and yet, oftentimes, beautifully pale and white! As for Tempest, the protaganist, he is merely "peculiar looking" and has "peculiar eyes."
Tempest flatly tells Rosamond (whom he sometimes calls Eve or Margaret) that he's a psychopath. She thinks love will conquer all, till she finds out some things that tend to bother her. She leaves him, and he hunts her down - not because he's a stalker - but because it's a game to him, like hunting an animal, and he has nothing else to do.
Well, this goes on for quite some time, with Rosamond getting help from everyone astounded by her beauty (except one nun - she's jealous), and two other guys falling madly in love with her, of course.
As for the relationship between Lito and Tempest and Tempest hiding it and treating him as a slave - why? Tempest character is never developed, and the end is pretty ridiculous, almost religious, but there's nothing there to back it up. I can see why it wasn't published and it still needs major editing. Each sentence was three times as long as it needed to be. Also, the editor forgot to clear up why Rosamond's grandfather "never forgave [her] Papa for marrying as he did" - when it was her mother who was his child and who married down by marrying her father.
This Fatal Love Chase Should be a Classic (A+ Grade).......2007-04-10
A Long Fatal Love Chase has a true obsessed villian, a heroine on the run from him and a man she loves but can never have. For fans of Wuthering Heights or Jane Eyre, this book should be read and kept on your keeper shelf.
Rosamond our heroine wants adventure and to live life. She is bored nd borderlined depressed. She thinks her savior comes to her as an old friend of her grandfather's. Philip marries Rose and whisks her away. Things seem to be perfect in their marriage. Philip and Rose have an incredible love and life. Simply everything Rose ever wanted.
But then Philip's secrets come out. Rose runs away and hence the name of the book comes into play.
Where as Philip started out as the too good to be true hero of this piece, he turns into an obsessed madman. He needs Rose back to complete his life no matter the cost to her or those she encounters.
Philip is so oily and sneaky that even though he does harm the heroine, he can't see the right or wrong in the situation. He has no morals and wants to win. Rose comes across as the stereotypical nieve heroine (Hey, she did love the man afterall) but she learns fast and tries to outwit Philip anyway she can, but the results don't end the way we the readers think it will.
For suspense, drama and an adventure of wits between two passionate people, this book has everything.
This is defintely not Alcott's "Little Women". A very dark and brooding story.

The Title Sums it Up Pretty well.......2006-11-26
A friend foisted this book upon me, exclaiming her love it and how it was not like Little Women. She was certainly right on both counts. It is not like any of the other Alcott books which I have read, and having visited her house--I don't remember the tour guide mentioning this book either, or Alcott having written anything like it.
Written to be published as a serial thriller it doesn't suffer from the repetiveness of other serials that have been condensed into novels (Dickens). The plot doesn't just roll it steam rolls, there is a momentum that starts from the first page and the allusions to Mephtistopholes, already that perked my interested, him being one of the most fascinating literary figures I have yet to encounter. Alcott's version of the tempter, Tempest, does not dissapoint either. Philip Tempest is a very fully drawn character a pinch of Bronte's Heathcliff, but with more realism. Rosamund, the heroine is no Catherine however, while spirited she is at heart a very good person, inspiring dedication to all of those who posesses goodness as well.
Time is a blur, a year passes between on chapter in the next in one instance. The ending is a powerful portrait in words. And it ends in a way that even with is tragicalness has a note of triump in it, for good and right. By far for me, the best character was Father Ignatius, classical hero in disguise as a monk. His vows keeping his love for Rosamund at bay, at the same time strengthening her love for him. In each other they are idealy matched and that is what ultimately drives Tempest to his last desperate act.
This book is great for sucking your attention from pretty much everything else, like sleeping while you are turning its pages, it was great, and I would reccomended it to others most certainly. People who liked the darkness of the Brontes will appreciate this (I don't like the Brontes so much, but this book is excellent).
Excellent.......2006-08-07
I enjoyed this book immensely - detailed yet easy to follow the plot. Once you get reading it's hard to put down. I didn't expect it to be very exciting since it was written so long ago in a time when stalking was rarely heard about. To my amazement it was very exciting and without any off color subject matter or anything explicit!! Alcott's writing in this book is superb.
Awesome!!!.......2006-03-24
This book was certainly nothing like Little Women. Both are great books, but this one is by far the best. Read it if you're looking for the wilder side of Alcott. The plot has many twists and turns; it's suspenseful, exciting, and the characterization is detailed. This book will absorb you, and you'll want to read it again every time you see it on your shelf.

Super Reader.......2007-08-31
Soledad, or 'Bullet' is no longer the new kid on the block. In fact, she is in charge of an MTac unit. The new chick this time is Eddi Aoki, who wants to be Soledad when she grows up.
Howeve, she has a thing for a great big knife that she inherited, as opposed to guns. Getting that close to super powered individuals is a lot of people's definition of crazy.
Eddi gets to be like Soledad a lot sooner than she wanted to.
RAW Rating: 3.5 - Super cop!.......2006-05-08
Soledad O'Roark is a police officer in Los Angeles with MTac, a group of special cops whose purpose in life is to rid the world of "freaks." Freaks are evolved human beings with superpowers and they are officially called metanormals. They can change shapes, pick up locomotive engines, toss cars around and any number of other amazing feats. Each metanormal usually has one paranormal function. Or at least that's how it used to be. Paranormals are now showing up with more than one function that makes the job of MTac a lot more risky. Soledad, a star on the MTac team, takes the challenge seriously, even after being hurt in a fight with a metanormal who took out two of her team members and injured her and Eddi Aoki. Eddi Aoki is a female cop who admires and envies Soledad and wants to be just like her.
There is also something corrupt going on in the police department and while Soledad recovers from her injury, she is approached by Internal Affairs to look into the corruption. Vin loves her, but she is so into her job, she hasn't the time for him. She doesn't even have time for her parents who call her regularly from their home in the east. She ignores their phone calls but something so serious is going on in her family that her mother comes to Los Angeles to see her in person. Soledad is not happy. She will be even unhappier after the visit.
WHAT FIRE CANNOT BURN is a complicated story of love and loss and the dangers of police work in Los Angeles. The writing style is interesting but sometimes distracting. John Ridley writes just the way some people talk - repeating words or phrases. While realistic, it is somewhat unsettling when an entire book is written this way. The characters are well-developed and you get the feeling that you actually know the chilly, non-emotional Soledad and you find yourself wanting to slap her awake to the realities of life outside the police department. It was an challenging read that science fiction lovers would find fascinating.

This will surprise you!.......2006-03-08
Soledad O'Roark and Eddi Aoki are cops on the LAPD's Pacific MTac team, the city's best mutant-hunter unit. At twenty-nine, Soledad is a streetwise veteran; Eddi, the young but talented protege--or rival. Their weapons--Soledad's custom-made O'Dwyer VLe handgun and Eddi's Hibben Bowie--and their deadliness are making them into infamous members of the police force. Unfortunately, the two women rarely finish a conversation without clashing; both are proud and angry. And too busy fighting to survive to waste time on talk.
Metanormals, mutants who have a superhuman ability, have infiltrated the city. The LAPD is losing good officers in vastly unequal fights. A relentless killer is littering the city with bodies. And the LAPD is wracked with internal power struggles and might contain a secret society of vigilantes.
Meanwhile, Soledad is deciding whether to marry Vin, an injured cop; her mother is fighting a life-threatening illness; and an Internal Affairs officer is trying to recruit her to spy on her fellow cops. In a wild series of clashes with mutants, Eddi burns through a lot of ammunition while trying to keep herself and her team alive.
These plotlines add up to an entertaining, albeit dark, story, and the novel is an excellent read. John Ridley writes in a frenetic, jazzy voice, and he layers a social critique of corporate greed, cultural conformity, and bureaucratic incompetence into this story.
Because Ridley weaves excerpts from Soledad's and Eddi's journals into the narrative, we get to know both women very well. We care about them and about what happens to them, which is one reason why this novel is riveting. Life is fragile and survival uncertain in this world, and we're still learning who can be trusted, who lives, and who has a secret even onto the novel's final page.
Armchair Interviews says: What Fire Cannot Burn will surprise you. Ridley is a writer willing to take risks, and he presents us with a story that seems like a simple morality tale at first but quickly deepens into an exploration of fear, evil, and human nature.
Loss and Redemption in Heroville.......2006-02-19
Soledad O'Roark, mutant-hating and hunting police officer returns for more adventures in the Los Angeles area after the demise of the Age of Heroes.
The brief attempts at rationaling Soledad's anger and hatred, while pointing out other's racism and hatred, are very weak and actually detract from the moral so perfectly illustrated in the first novel of Matthew chapter 7, verse 3:
"And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye?"
Ridley follows the noir formula to its bitter end of conflicted and compromised characters attempting to survive in a dark and diseased world of stark whites and blacks, but mostly a morass of troubling moral choices. And in the end, all are self-damned.
Don't judge this one by its cover........2006-01-11
The paperback cover of two scantily clad armed women might lead one to expect a light action-adventure, possibly with sexual overtones. Ridley's book is more serious than the cover leads you to expect.
Ridley's _What Fire Cannot Burn_ appears to be a sequel, but works well as a stand-alone novel. The background is a society where metahumans existed, then were outlawed after a brawl destroyed most of San Francisco.
On the surface, it is a typical police story about a tough cop accidentally disabled and asked by Internal Affairs to investigate a possible vigilante within an intelligence unit. Lively characters and multiple twists keep the plot moving nicely. The ending is a bit too well foreshadowed, but most of the other twists work well -- at least one comes as a major surprise.
Beneath that, there are themes about the reactions and over-reactions of society in the post-9/11 era and questions about minority rights, as well as wrestling with death, dying, and disability. The major characters are engaging and well-drawn.
Certainly worth a read.

Drilling right to the point.......2007-08-17
This is the shortest introduction to the depths of esoteric knowledge you will ever find. If you are on the Path, you will feel like it was written just for you. If you aren't, don't even bother.
Sound and Universal advice..........2003-12-30
The pursuit of knowledge, the practice of service to one's fellows, hardship and suffering and ultimately, a true comprehension and temperance of our lower natures, all combine to lead us to a better understanding of our existence. In this curious and important essay, Hall describes the shared destinies of all of us; and that is our pursuit of truth and our conscious or unconscious hunger for a meaningful relationship with the Divine. He warns and laments about our modern tendencies to material gain and instant gratification in all things worldly. Over time, he suggests, the methods used in attaining material gratification has translated into our spiritual endeavours. One cannot deny the plethora of `expert' advise out there, presenting in many guises, to attain Wisdom in "ten easy steps". Become an all-powerful, influential guru and mammoth success, getting rich in the process. For a substantial fee, ladies and gentleman, we can show you the secrets of the ancients and throw in a no-fail diet to boot. This, of course, is not the road to Wisdom. The true road, Hall suggests, is a long and arduous one, fraught with suffering and difficult lessons, where one's hope lies in one's sincere labour, courage, true aspiration and egoless silence.
This short essay is recommended to anyone interested in sound and universal advice in their pursuit of a greater understanding of themselves and existence.
Live the Life as the Ancient Masters.......2003-04-02
In this short work by Manly Hall, he digresses into the little known subject of how the ancient masters of the mystery schools go about teaching their students. Much has changed in the way of secret societies since the days of Plato and Pythagoras, however, the principles are generally the same. Silence is still of utmost importance. In the times of Pythagoras, silence was not only a virtue, but something your life depended upon. Today, you will not get crucified or burned at the stake for revealing secrets from a society, however, your integrity and Will are disseminated. Silence today stands as a virtue more than anything, but one that most people neglect. This short book also looks into the practices of the Student, Disciple and Initiate, as the basic three grades of the practitioner once they have entered a mystery school. Even today all of these attitudes that Hall speaks about have complete practicality in today's culture. It is less about environment and more about the demeanor of the practitioner. If one does not take in all of the ideas represented in this book, surely one or two of them will cling to the readers mind as not only possible, but inspirational. For those that have been practicing the secret arts for a period of time, this book may serve as a good reminder of why they are doing what they do to begin with.
Essential Ancient Wisdom for the Initiate on the Path.......2000-05-30
Manly P. Hall gives all students and initiates the essential knowledge of proceeding on the path of the Ancient Wisdom (and the Mystery Schools). Further recommended reading are the books- "ZELATOR"; "KYBALLION"; "The Initiation of the World"; and all the books of Rudolph Steiner and Alice Bailey. Those wishing to advance can also join the Rosicrucians (AMORC).

I've never had so much fruit in my life!.......2002-06-15
This deck is one of the most practical ways I've ever seen to get healthy...and enjoy it! I've been so excited ever since I got this deck to try a new one every day. The fact that each recipe is on a card proves very efficient: it is small enough to store in your kitchen without taking up space, and you can organize it so that your all your faves are right towards the front. The cards are catagorized to meet certain needs, and color coded. For example, there are recipes to boost you immune system, smoothies that are particularly suited for men and women, smoothies for kids and babies, etc. On the bottom of each card the nutrition values are broken down by gram (ie. how much protien, carbohydrate, etc. per serving) so you can be very intentional about your goals. Whether you're looking for a high protein breakfast , or something to help you relax and unwind at the end of the day, this deck allows you to get exactly what you want, when you want it. The cards themselves are thick and durable, and easy to wipe off if you get a little crazy. :)
My advice for getting the most out of this deck is to be adventurous. These recipes use a wide variety of ingredients, which keeps it interesting. Many ingredients can be frozen overnight, and the advance preparation is convenient if you're pressed for time when you are actually ready to make your smoothie. The only downside I can see to this is that there's not a lot of room to be spontaneous. Because there are so many ingredients and the freshness of those ingredients is a factor, you need to plan out your shopping trips accordingly. I don't typically have apricot nectar around, for example, or tofu, so I need to put a little effort into it. But, it's well worth it. I can't imagine anyone being disappointed in this purchase.

This book focuses on 'new' Fiesta, or what some collectors call 'post 86' Fiesta. Somewhat different than the 'old' Fiesta, post 86 Fiesta maintains the historical dignity and the beautiful Deco design philosophy of Frederick Rhead. Candleholders, plates, vases, tumblers, platers, teapots, and coffeepots are all included in this pocket-size handy reference. Decaled new Fiesta is covered, including the Sunporch, Moon over Miami lines, and the MegaChina offerings. Approx. 200 detailed color photos.

Great learning tool and reference.......2005-09-26
Great learning tool about fiesta dishes. Good pictures showing colors and their names. Quality book.
Severely disappointed.......2002-07-30
I'm both a collector and a bibliophile, and this is the first time I've ever thought it necessary to this say about any collector's book: In my opinion, this book stinks. A shame, as it's clear that the author has in-depth knowledge to impart. Unfortunately, it's clouded by the author's apparent dislike of dealers, fellow collectors, and the Homer Laughlin China Company itself.
The book designer's work is exuberant and cheerful, much as is Fiestaware; however, the author's text is mean spirited. I don't think I've ever seen an odder combination. I hope for better things from the obviously knowledgeable author in the future.
Someone published this?.......2002-05-16
The idea for a book dedicated to Post-1986 (P86) Fiestaware® is a terrific idea and I was pleased to order it.
What a poor execution! Racheter's attempt is inconsistent, sophomoric and diseased with his unceasing attacks on Homer Laughlin China Company. (Who cares why he hates Homer Laughlin? Not me!)
The (little) new information and price guide for some P86 colors - the book's innovative features - are overshadowed by the pointless commentary.
Unfortunately the book isn't worth keeping for the pictures either... Don't buy this book!...
So Much Has Changed.......2001-10-20
This book is a good start, but so much has changed in post 86 Fiesta... items, colors added and discontinued, prices. An update is desperately needed. Also a bit less "filler" as far as stories and dramatic exposition and more emphasis on actual introductions and discontinuations in the new line. Also, so many competing lines are similar... a back of the book section showing other contemporary dinnerware lines that currently compete with Fiesta.
My biggest suggestion would be a chapter showing comparison of old versus new items to show the evolution of design...1.e. the old casserole versus the new one, old cup next to new one. Many collectors of the new do not appreciate where the design evolved from
Also, the only decaled ware shown is...well.. the less said the better about what is shown... where are the artistic and popular patterns like Sunporch, Happy Pumpkin and Moon Over Miami?
The Post 86 Bible-Better than Collector's Encycl. of Fiesta.......2001-09-27
This book is better than the Collector's Encyclopedia of Fiesta. So save yourself about $... and buy this book instead if you want informations on POST 86 Fiesta.
It is full of pictures and has easy to use information boxes with every mold/piece. You know what colors they came in, mold and item numbers and lots of detailed informations.
The downside to this book is that you only find one picture per item (mostly) limiting your view by only offering one angle.
The price list is extensive enough to not leave colors out.
I personally enjoy the authors style of writing thoroughly with his light humor. Mocking Martha Stewart a little, because he seems to think that she's a stuck up snob that only wants the Super Old stuff and abominates the new colors for the most part. He tells funny stories about TV and where he's seen fiesta. However, a little more history and facts would sometimes be nice. I assume, people buy this book for information not funny short stories.
I thoroughly enjoy that fact that he includes uses for some odd pieces. Looking at some candle holders they could be anything. He explains what the item was meant for and what else it is commonly used for.
LAst but not least... unfortunately it seems like this author was not given the same acces to limited pieces and photographs in is therefore lacking some details on limited ed. pieces.

My mother loved what I made her.............2001-06-10
I had this book for a fews years. And wanted try out the patterns. So, I did a eyeglass case with cherries on them. This book is easy to understand & for doing the projects. This turned out wonderful, and was able to put my mother's name on to personalized it. The patterns are so beautiful, and you won't regret getting this book. They have a wonderful Holiday ideas, these are great keepsakes for you,& your loved ones.
Delightful!.......1999-08-18
I bought this book after receiving Mary Engelbriet's "Cross-Stitch For All Seasons" as a gift. I absolutely fell in love with her designs. My only wish is that she would publish more books with cross-stitch patterns of her artwork. This book has many adaptable patterns for a great variety of projects. If you are a cross-stitcher...you have to have her books!
This book has an adorable chart for an Engelbreit santa........1998-07-13
This first Engelbreit crosstitch book should not be overlooked by those interested in holiday motifs. It includes a wonderful chart for a santa that can be used in a variety of ways. The charts can also be used in needlepoint if the backstitching is omitted. This is a charming collection .
Amazon.com
Mary Engelbreit's cheerful designs have become almost ubiquitous, appearing on everything from greeting cards to home fabrics to clothing, and the 80-plus seasonal projects in this book are a happy extension of those colorful pick-me-ups. These designs cover the cross-stitch skill range, from 10-count perforated plastic ornaments and button covers to an embellished gardener's journal cover worked on 36-count linen. The tinted charts, instructions, and specialty-stitch diagrams smooth the creative process for those who want to use these patterns as a jumping-off point for their own whimsy.
Customer Reviews:
Simple, colorful patterns that capture the charm and magic of Engelbreit at her best!.......2005-08-25
After longing for "Mary Engelbreit Cross Stitch for All Seasons," but balking at the high price, I eventually picked up a copy for a song in a bargain bin. I am a longtime fan of Mary Engelbreit's whimsical work, and copies of several of her more famous works (Everyone needs their own Spot, It's Good to be Queen) grace my home.
"Cross Stitch For All Seasons" includes cross stitch adaptations of Engelbreit's signature works such as Everyone Needs Their Own Spot, Believe, and It's Good to be Queen in a variety of uses: as pillows, basket liners, placemats, bookends, button covers, treat bags and more.
The book is arranged in four seasons (Autumn, Winter, Spring, Summer), and projects are grouped accordingly. Halloween treats include a centerpiece, treat bag, candy corn button covers, basket liners and more. Spring features handy gifts for the gardener. Baby and wedding projects are also included, along with "Breit ideas" and a handy section on cross-stitch basics.
The patterns are easy to read, both in the choice of colors and in the size of the patterns themselves. I would classify the stitching level as moderately difficult, and based on the numerous color photos of finished projects that grace the book, the patterns are very close to the originals. Ranging from quick and easy (button covers) to down and dirty (double-layered, matted wedding plaques), this is sure to please any cross-stitcher who loves the timeless art of Mary Engelbreit.
Good, but..........2004-12-12
bought the book - love the designs (am currently going cross eyed doing "believe" as a present for my mother).
the ONE problem (and it's not insignificant) is that the ink runs. If you're at ALL a "hands on" stitcher, make sure to photocopy the designs and work from those - i smudged out a very large section of one of the designs by accident.
My first cross stitch book.......2002-08-02
This book was WONDERFUL!! She broke it up into various themes and her puppies were the cutest I have ever seen. Also I enjoyed the fact that along with the patterns she gave great ideas for how to turn the patterns into wonderful accessories for your home. I would HIGHLY recommend that this book become part of your cross stitch library. Also, check out her first book about cross stitch. It is a little more involved but still a good part of any collection.
Not quite what I expected.......2001-10-28
I am very surprised at the high ratings this book has been given, the new "Look Inside" feature is wonderful,if I had the chance to look inside the book before ordering it,I definitely would not have bought it. Most designs are thematic:christmas, halloween, mother goose and puppies. I only liked some of the garden designs. To be fair I should say that the layout of this book is very good along with its well defined charts, other than that it's over-rated.
Gorgeous Designs.......2000-06-23
The cover of this book gives a taste of the wonderful things to come. The designs are colourful and refreshing, and the charts are coloured and easy to read. I can't wait to stitch the 'Home Sweet Home' sampler. There are also great ideas for using the designs in innovative ways. This book is a classic for cross stitchers. Designs run over all the seasons, and include Christmas designs, things for children, and lovely things for the home. I have enjoyed just browsing through it and reading the helpful ideas and suggestions!

Lives up to its title............2007-07-15
Grew up in a small home and have lived in small homes most of my life. What I liked about this book is there are enough examples of clean simple living spaces and not the typical older small home in the states where rooms are small and almost claustrophobic. Like the light colours of some of the rooms and the airiness. And yes many homes shown are ultra modern or what some may see as 'less is more' and this is what appealed to me.
I needed ideas for a new place that would be between 400-700 square feet in size with no wasted space, where building up would create a sense of roominess and where bedrooms, kitchen and living room/dining room combinations would have tons of hidden storage space so that 'stuff' wasn't all over the place. And this book delivered.
And yes, homes in Europe and Asia are shown, and I am glad, because they have been doing small open living spaces so well for so long. And energy efficient in style as well.
Small Spaces.......2006-01-04
I browsed this book first at my local bookstore and wasn't interested at first but then just decided to buy it and i've been very satisfied. It's not your "usual" interior design book with just lots of beautiful photos - this one offers case studies with actual floor plans as well plus good information about the projects.
Not a big fan of Terence Conran's work but this is a book has been good to me!
#3 out of 7 "Small decor" books rated.......2005-02-14
I place this 3rd among the 7 "decorating small spaces" books I bought. This is the only exception to my objections about those focusing on European dwellings. Conran features London & Paris apts (plus Hong Kong & an Italian stable!), but unlike others, some ideas are adaptable in America. Most units are 300-400 sq. ft.; the largest is 1000. Photos are helpful, except for a few so arty they require a double take to figure out what you're actually supposed to be seeing. Charming Intro portrays creative "expansion" of tiny areas-everything from a 1940s mobile van to a treehouse.
I expected more creativity.......2003-05-07
Banal works. This book is not what I was expecting. Poor creativity to deal with small spaces. Don't spend money with this book.
I was disappointed.......2002-10-19
Because I love Conran's books (and design sense in general), i was very, very disappointed when I got this book. It is very short on fresh ideas, and, perhaps even more disappointing, the photos aren't as varied and interesting as one usually finds in a Conran book. I flipped through when I first got this and saw lots of hallways and beds. I thought, 'well, there's probably more here so don't judge it right away.' I paged through and still found lots of hallways and beds. Very little in this book. Very disappointing.

Book Description
Witty and sophisticated, a brilliant dramatist and a charismatic actor, the multitalented Noël Coward was one of the most colorful personalities who ever strode across the stage. These diaries chronicle the last 30 years of his life, from his wartime concert tours through his private and professional depression in the 1950s to his triumphant reemergence and knighthood in the 1960s and '70s. "Compulsive reading...what Coward has to say about other people is light-hearted, witty, often shrewd, totally without malice...his final entertainment for everyone's pleasure are these diaries." --Sunday Times. "A constant delight. A goldmine of gossip with a cast of a thousand stars."
--Guardian.
Customer Reviews:
Every Year At Christmas....Noel Coward!!!.......2003-12-07
Virtually every person I know has a favorite Christmas tradition, an activity that they perform every year that is theirs and theirs alone, and that sums up the Christmas spirit of peace, good will, and love. For my own tradition, every year at this time, I reread this wonderful book. Why, you may ask? Well, I'll do my best to explain. I received this book as a Christmas present from a dear friend when it was first published in 1982. It quickly became my favorite book, and I find that it both inspires and delights me with every new reread. I was an actor and theatre person for many years, just long enough to discover one truth about Sir Noel Coward: This stylish and elegant man, actor, singer, playwright par excellence, and all around bon vivant, simply knew more about life in general and the theatre in particular than any other person I've ever encountered. Whether dealing with stubborn, recalcitrant actresses who refuse to wear their hair properly (i.e. Mary Martin), or facing the loss of a livelong confidant (his personal secretary, Lorn Loraine), Coward's show of sheer courage, strength, and determination in facing the everyday stresses and strains of life, and with considerable humor and great goodwill, seems to me the essence of the Christmas (and, by extension, the human) spirit. Organized in chapters by the years the diary entries were made (1945 to 1969, with a prologue that covers the World War II years as one section), the book is a very relaxed and enjoyable read (usually, a chapter a night works well), and covers the time period of the years following his initial successes (by the time the entries begin, Coward had already written his best known works: Private Lives, Desigh for Living, Hay Fever, and Blithe Spirit) through the 1950's and the years of abuse at the hands of narrow-minded critics (who considered him too "shallow" and "commercial"), and on through the 1960's and his renaissance period (when many of those same critics found his plays fashionable once again). Through it all, the successes, tragedies and failures, the many, many encounters with the rich and famous (Coward knew virtually every famous person of his day and counted many as lifelong friends), and most of all, the wit and wisdom of one of the most fascinating persons of our time will keep the devoted reader enthralled for all 700 plus pages. I could say much more about The Noel Coward Diaries, but a hundred reviews could not contain it all, so I will close by saying please make this book a present for yourself (and/or someone you love). Trust me, it will be one of the wittiest, most delightful, and truly Merriest Christmases you have ever spent!!!
