Customer Reviews:
Short stories were not my cup of tea, BUT.......2007-01-30
I have always hated short stories, because they had no substance for me. This was the first of J. California Cooper's books I read and I am now HOOKED! In reading these books I can relate to people I really know. This is the first time I had actually laughed out loud reading a book. I am now a huge fan. I feel these are a must read.
Funny.......2006-09-22
I simply loved the stories especially Liberated. That woman had me saying "you go girl!"
Now that's what I call writing!.......2001-05-29
I borrowed this book from a friend, and I am upset that I have let this treasure sit in my apartment for 2 months without reading it. This book is awesome! The writing is simple, wisdom-filled and flavorful! Without making her characters heroic, you find yourself admiring them, because they are so human... full of good, but full of frailties at the same time. I didn't want this book to end, and I'm about to order any book of hers that I can get my hands on. Ms. Cooper is a good writer, with an obvious love and respect for her craft. More than that, without being preachy she manages to impart insight into human nature. I loved this book! The book and the woman who wrote it are classics!
A Piece of Mine.......2001-01-06
I'm enjoying the work of J.California Cooper more and more. I've never been one to read short stories but I'm hooked now. Each story touch my heart and reminds me of someone I know. I feel as if I'm sitting on the porch talking to my grandmother when I read some of these stories. So heartwarming. God's Blessings.
Outstanding and uplifting.......2000-08-14
A wonderful, quick read. Her stories touch the heart and some even make you say "you go girl". Iloved this book and would pass it on to many friends. You won't put it down!

Fast and funny romance.......2006-12-20
This is the first book in Linda Windsor's Moonstruck Series and it's a winner. Caroline Spencer has agreed to chaperone her daughter Annie's class trip to Mexico. She is seated on the plane by Blaine Madison, whose daughter, Karen, is her daughter's best friend. He is also a Harrison Ford lookalike, and Caroline wants to make a good impression. Unfortunately, she is afraid of flying, and gets a major case of the hiccups. You can hear her all over the plane. She's sure Blaine is totally unimpressed.
Blaine and Caroline are thrown together constantly because of their daughters. Mexico and moonlight madness work their spell, but then the girls get caught up in a smuggling ring and suddenly the trip becomes a disaster.
LInda Windsor's characters are engaging, the humor is relaxed and natural, and there's plenty of page turning suspense. Paper Moon will leave the reader hungry for more. Fortunately, books two and three are available. So if you like exotic settings, humor and plenty of romantic suspense, check out Linda Windsor's Moonstruck Series. You'll be glad you did.
Fun in the Sun.......2006-06-30
I thoroughly enjoyed Paper Moon. Linda Windsor has such a penchant for humor that you find yourself laughing out loud at the antics of Mrs. C, Annie, Karen, and Blaine. Any parent who has chaparoned a teen trip will relive some of the experiences through the situations Linda conceives for her characters. This is a delightful tale with so much good fun and a little bit of suspense thrown in for good measure. Paper Moon is a great read to take your mind off what ails you.
A Great Way To Start A Series!!!.......2004-12-04
This read which happens to be the first in the "Moonstruck Series" deftly combines, suspense, romance, humor, and a strong spiritual message into a well rounded story that will have readers anticipating the next in the series.
Single parents Caroline Spencer, and Blaine Madison are both tackling to the best of their abilities of raising teenage daughters. When a on school trip to Mexico these two very different but damaged people find love but this new found love will be tested when their daughters are kidnapped. Will their faith in God, and in each other be strong enough to survive a parents worst nightmare?
Ms. Windsor has penned a very good character driven read. Caroline and Blaine are truly wonderful characters and her use of wit and humor helped to make them very real for the reader. These are not "perfect people" and as a result it was easy to see and believe that these two people were able to find love a second time around with each other. This is a read that I highly recommend you not miss.

Wonderful tale of second love!.......2004-11-22
Linda Windsor has a winner in "Paper Moon," Book One of the Moonstruck Series from WestBow Press.
Caroline Spencer is the divorced mother of 16 year-old Annie who, along with her best friend, Karen, want to take a school trip to Mexico. Naturally, they need chaperones, and Caroline joins them on the trip designed to promote family togetherness.
Blaine Madison barely makes the plane to join the school sponsored trip. Traveling with a group of Christian teenagers and their parents to Mexico makes Blaine feel uncomfortable. After all, he lost his faith in God after his wife died. But it will give him an opportunity to spend time with his daughter, Karen.
When he's seated next to Caroline on the plane, her natural humor has the stressed out Blaine smiling for the first time in ages. Then, the night of their arrival in Acapulco, the kids visit the disco club, Banditos, where no liquor is served. There his daughter Karen meets John Chandler, a senior at the University of California in Mexico City, and Blaine's parental instincts get into high gear. It's not only the difference in ages between his daughter and the college student that make him suspicious. There's something about John just doesn't sit right with him.
Unbeknownst to the travelers, John is involved in a ring of thieves who steal priceless stamp collections, meant to be sold abroad. John's goal is to find a naïve target: someone to mail the card carrying the stolen property from the States. Despite the rule of not accepting packages, Karen falls prey to John's request.
As the school group tours Mexico, Blaine finds himself turning to Caroline for help in understanding his daughter. The spiritual depth behind Caroline's words eases the guilt Blaine feels over the loss of his wife, and also helps bridge the gap between father and daughter. And Caroline finds herself attracted to the handsome, lonely widower. As the days pass, her attraction for Blaine continues to grow.
But when John discovers that Karen has lost the envelope he gave her, and then Karen and Annie disappear, Blaine blames Caroline. Caroline trusts in God to keep the girls safe. But is Blaine ready to give God - and Caroline - a second chance?
Linda Windsor has won numerous awards for her novels, including historical and contemporary romances, and after reading "Paper Moon," I can see why. "Paper Moon" is filled with adventure, suspense, marvelous humor and great sensitivity. To say I eagerly look forward to her next release is an understatement. This is definitely a not-to-be missed book!

Very Informative, But a Little Boring.......2007-07-23
The author provides a very scholarly analysis of women in the Old Testament. If more intellectual reading is not your thing, then this may not be the book for you. However, if you are into writing that is a little more dense, then you might like it. She provides a lot of interesting points. If you want to read about some of the symbolism and meaning of women in the bible, this book could pose very helpful.
Bible women lives and life.......2007-04-07
Real different perspective of women and their roles in biblical studies. I shared with my Bible study folks and the ladies were most interested and shared the book. Also see "and Sarah laughed" for similar stories.
One of the most interesting books about women of the Hebrew Bible.......2005-12-20
I have read a few dozen such books and I was very impressed by this one. Tikva Frymer-Kensky is very scholarly she often defers to the original Hebrew. Her work is well documented, yet very readable. I was particularly impressed by her treatment of Hagar. Most Jewish authors either portray her negatively or ignore her altogether.
Thoughtfully engaging interpretation of their stories .......2005-02-10
In Tikva Frymer-Kensky's Reading The Women Of The Bible: A New Interpretation Of Their Stories, gender issues in the Bible are tackled from the perspective of proposing a new taxonomy of four discourses involving women, reflecting the author's background as a professor of Hebrew Bible at the Divinity School at the University of Chicago. Informed and informative, Professor Tikva Frymer-Kensky's new and thoughtfully engaging interpretation of their stories includes liberal quotes from the Bible and insights into early Biblical influences and is very highly recommended reading.
Excellent Resource.......2003-05-01
An excellent read and an excellent resource for students and interested parties. Well-written, clear, with humor and insight too.

Customer Reviews:
Okay.......2001-08-23
I would have prefered a few more recipes for the staples such as chicken, beef etc. Most of the recipes seemed a little esoteric to me and unlikely to be included in my every day cooking. Perhaps thats the intention of the book but I think they could have found a better balance.
right in your own backyard.......2000-10-26
Wonderful, expertly written, and extremely helpful in pin pointing exactly what you are looking for in dining in every neighborhood in S.F. Thanks..
More than just a cookbook.......2000-10-26
This book is fabulous. Even for people who don't cook, the book is a great restaurant guide to San Francisco. I love the historical backgrounds of the neighborhoods. Very well written, with a sense of style, opinion, and irreverence. Very SF! I also find the layout, type treatments, and color very pleasing and easy to navigate. The beautiful black & white photographs give a great sense of the neighborhoods without being clichéd.

Helpful for that period.......2007-01-09

Enjoyable Quality Reference for Little-Known Glass Companies.......2002-11-28
It's often difficult to decide which of the many reference book offerings are worthy of a home library. Here's one subject area you won't worry about seeing repeated by many authors. Six has compiled information about some "orphan" manufacturers of vintage glass, along with placing the more well-known makers (Fenton, Fostoria) in historical, and geographical, context. We were reading this at a depression glass show and caused most of the passing dealers to stop to ask how to buy one. The photography is beautiful and will be a big help in identifying odd pieces not chronicled in the usual DG and Elegant books. However, the editing is a bit haphazard and following the narrative time lines can be difficult. My uncles worked in these factories and this is a welcome bit of confirmation to the oral history I grew up with. This book nicely balances the stories of the companies with the collector info needed by dealers and hobbyists.
Glass What we Missed in Weatherman's Book 2!.......2002-08-02
I have waited for somebody to show us what Central Glass put out in the 1930's! This book has it! All the unidentified depression glass we could not find previously - well, some of it is in this book! Well worth what I had to spend!

Very imaginative with engaging photographs. Great ideas to make a summer day with kids perfect. Does not require too much advanced preparation, mostly using objects found outdoors. Easy to follow instructions. Some projects will appeal to girls others to boys. How about a "Winter Crafts" book next?(Also makes a great gift)

WONDERFUL HOUSE.......2006-10-28
I LOVE THIS BOOK. I LIVE NEAR AIKEN AND FOR MANY YEARS EACH TIME I WENT TO AIKEN I WOULD DRIVE BY THIS HOUSE BECAUSE I WAS SO IN LOVE WITH IT. THE STORY IS CHARMING. THE HOUSE IS WONDERFUL. I'M SO GLAD THEY RESTORED IT. I AM SORRY THAT THEY MISSED THE CLASSY PARTS OF THE SOUTH. IT IS NOT ALL COLLARDS, WHICH I HAVE NEVER TASTED UNTIL LAST YEAR AND I HAVE ALWAYS LIVED HERE.IM SURE THEY HAVE ANOTHER STORY TO TELL AT THIS POINT. I WILL BE THE FIRST TO BUY IT.
Few books have affected me like this one........2006-08-15
It was August, 1999. After a tough year of renovation my husband and I moved into our own 5,800 sf "Money Pit". We had spent a total of $ 600,000 getting ready for this day. It had been our dream ever since we had completed a renovation of our 1800 sf cottage 12 years before. We had battled bad heating guys, windows that had arrived to fit seemingly another house, workers who preferred smoking in our driveway to actually doing any work, painters who peed in my bathtub and nasty neighbors.
But now we had moved in. We had no countertops as the machinery to put an edge on them had broken. So we did dishes, washed up and brushed our teeth in the one working bathtub. Boxes covered the first floor. The cracks in the wood floors gave me all-world blisters. And the air conditioning STILL did not work.
My husband, after spending less than an hour at home stood and looked up at me up the grand staircase and told me in a calm voice, "I don't want to BE here anymore" and went back to his office. I looked over the house...a decade of work left to do and our life savings committed to it and could only bring myself to do a tiny job that felt achievable; sorting his socks. Even that was difficult as I burst into sight-busting tears.
At that very moment there was a knock at the door. An old friend from down the street handed me this book and gave me a hug. I went to bed with it and over the next week I worked at making the house more comfortable when I felt up to it and reading the book when I didn't. It saved my sanity that hot August.
Three years later I watched my neighbor...distraught and crying on the tailgate of his truck over home renovation issues of his own and passed this life-ring along.
Thanks so much to the authors!!
Lighten up about remodeling!.......2005-03-21
This is a really funny and very well-written book about two Manhattan queens who buy a mansion in the South and renovate it. Every remodeling horror you can imagine is described, but it all works out in the end! This book underscores the need for Cash, Cash, Cash! My girlfriend is reading it now and is finding it sweet and fun.
An easy, entertaining read.......2002-03-12
"On A Street Called Easy, in a Cottage called Joye" is an easy and entertaining read, with short chapters perfect for the ride on the subway, or a break between tasks. A close parallel to "A Year In Provence", which is referenced by the authors, the story is essentially a humorous take on the gentry's lament "you can't get good help these days", but the biggest difference is that while "A Year..." is heavily slanted towards food, "A Street..." is almost entirely about the travails of renovating a wreck. It is after all, set in the deep (if it ain't fried, it ain't cooked)south, this is NOT Provence.
The "true" story follows its two, pullitzer prize winning authors as they leave their dark, viewless, Manhattan condo and set out for Aiken, S.C., where they've bought(for quite a bit less than the original million+ asking price) a sixty room mansion built in 1897 by WC Whitney, as the gilded age began to flicker to a close. Through neglect, the house is an absolute mess. The crew hired to bring it back to its glory is pretty much a mess as well. From the holdover-joint-toking hippie that makes off with the only, working-order copper piping to sell for scrap, to the tile man who wants to be paid for time he'd requested to hang out (doing nothing)while the tile arrived, to the maid who spends all day dusting 3 rooms, only to be discovered sleeping whenever the bosses are away. You can't leave this crew a for a second, as they discover towards the end, in a scene that will leave wine lovers heart broken. The problem is, as with "A year in Provence", the owners seem to have a bottomless pocketbook, and always seem to have a check to write to cover whatever goes wrong. And EVERYTHING goes wrong. This eventually takes away from the believability, especially when combined with the patience of Job that the two men seem to display, endlessly, towards what are essentially ne'er do wells and lowlifes posing as contractors. Ah, well. You do learn a bit about the Whitneys, the house in its better days, Aiken in its better days, and the more recent days. All in all a worthwhile read.
Truly, one of my most favorite books!.......2002-01-12
I was given the BOOK version of this several years ago by a dear friend and honestly, I have read and re-read this book several times. The first time that I got it, I actually read it out loud to my husband while we were working on our own version of "Joy Cottage." We both roared with laughter!
Having moved to the South from the West Coast, I understood totally what Mr. White-Smith encountered! From Irish Travelers to the local restaurant that produces vegetables that have had every last trace of nutritional content boiled out of them, collard greens, fat back and fat light (it is vital that you know the difference: one is used to light fires and one is put in with your collards!),pepper sauce, sweet tea (cavities be damned!) to Moon Pies, Krispy Kremes, speech from people that you swear aren't speaking English, painters that can't paint, roofers that drink way too much, Nandina, Magnolias and Smilack at Christmas (I hope that I spelling the last one correctly!) and on and on and on. If you live in the South (especially if you are a transplant) and most especially if you live in or have redone an old house, this is the book for you!
As I said, I have re-read this book several times and I still find myself laughing hysterically. It is a great book that I am terribly sorry is out of print. Until it comes back into its second printing, the audio version will suffice. I wish they would do a "Part II" version...
A MUST read!
Book Description
One of the most important building blocks of design is color -- but getting the color right is also one of design's biggest challenges. In the wake of new technologies such as improved computer monitors, digital photography, and digital printing, ironically, the complexity of color management has increased rather than diminished.
This practical and comprehensive book offers a troubleshooting guide designers can turn to for answers about all aspects and every step of color use and management. This book begins with the basic of color theory and move methodically through the design process, covering everything from choosing color combinations and executing management techniques to designing with color on the Web and printing with optimal results.

Book not worthy of Subject.......1999-02-28
I admit it, I'm a huge Beck fan. So I was disappointed in this effort. The book relies on all the old magazine articles and websites as its sources. It would have been more effective, and interesting, had the author interviewed Beck himself, his family, band-mates, and music critics. For those who are interested in Beck's multi-talents, check out the book "Playing with Matches." Though not a book directly about Beck's music, it does give an interesting back ground on his artistic influences, namely his grandfather Al Hansen. One final note, while I feel that the writing was vague and magazinish, the photographs were excellent.
