A Trip to the Stars opens with a kidnapping at a New York planetarium in 1965 and ends exactly 15 years later at a Hawaiian observatory. In the 500 intervening and absurdly readable pages, its two narrators undergo equal parts heartache and discovery--not to mention a fine excess of things astronomical. As Nicholas Christopher's exhilarating third novel begins, 10-year-old Loren reaches for his aunt Alma's hand while the crowd surges around them. Alas, he's in for the first of many jolts:
The woman, who was pulling me hard now to a blue sedan idling at the curb, was not my aunt. Until she opened the rear door and pushed me in, I thought she must have mistaken me for another child. Then, before stepping in after me, she looked me full in the face and betrayed no surprise.
Already twice orphaned, Loren is spirited away from the young woman he considers his only relative and finds himself in a strange building on the edge of the Mojave Desert. Inhabited by "people looking for lost things" and, as he later realizes, "people who had once been lost--like me," the Hotel Canopus is the life work of his uncle, the collector and pomologist Junius Samax. (Let it be known that A Trip to the Stars features the most fanciful monikers this side of Howard Norman's novels.) Now restored to his real name, Enzo, and assured that his aunt has been informed of his fate, the boy is given the sort of home schooling only Nicholas Christopher could dream up--the usual academic suspects enhanced by ancient languages, Zuni wisdom, mnemonics, and, of course, astronomy. (In this novel of multiple stargazers, even Enzo's wolf dog, Sirius, has a head for the heavens.) Meanwhile, Alma, having failed to find her nephew, attempts to rid herself of her past: she changes her name to Mala and, following the most compelling spider bite in all fiction, joins the Navy Nursing Corps and heads for Vietnam.

As the author alternates between Enzo and Mala's very separate universes, he packs his book with suspense and arcana. Echoes and parallels prevail, as do demons and eccentrics. The Hotel Canopus is filled with exotic individuals, including an eight-fingered pianist-arachnologist, an art historian in hot pursuit of Adam's navel, and women named Desirée, Della, Dolores, Denise, and Dalia. But it also houses a resentful relative or two. A Trip to the Stars is so grounded that all its magic, coincidence, and mystery seem hyper-real, from a girl who becomes a vampire to Mala's lover, a soldier whose shrapnel wounds mirror the Andromeda galaxy. Despite the intricacy of his novel, Nicholas Christopher has wisely declined to preface it with a family tree or a list of dramatis personae. For this we can be grateful, since much of the book's pleasure comes from watching him weave destinies, miracles, and more than a few blood feuds as he proffers the ultimate celestial fix. --Kerry Fried

Book Description

At a Manhattan planetarium in 1965, ten-year-old Enzo and his young aunt, Mala, are separated, an event that profoundly alters the rest of their lives. In an epic tale of love and destiny, A Trip to the Stars charts their paths over the next fifteen years as they search for each other and, in the process, discover themselves.

As Enzo and Mala cross continents and seas on their separate journeys, they encounter a dizzying array of people: an arachnologist in New Orleans, an asteroid specialist, a wounded B-52 navigator in Vietnam, a professional mind reader, a maverick NASA astronomer, and countless others. All of them are searching for things they have lost -- loved ones, opportunities, enlightenment. Through them Mala and Enzo discover a world steeped in mystery, romance, and intellectual adventure.

A Trip to the Stars is both a love story and a coming-of-age story that shows us what happens when we lose what matters most. Fusing imagination and suspense with remarkable narrative skill, Nicholas Christopher builds a story of tremendous scope that lingers in detail and sensation long after the last page has been turned.

A Trip To The Stars: A NovelI loved this book. I what more can I say. It is one of the best books I've read!

5 out of 5 stars The Stars Come Alive.......2007-05-14

This is a brilliant book that takes one along on a journey that is a journey for the era in which it takes place...the Sixties through the Eighties, as well as the magnificent range of characters that populate it. Along the way, one learns about arachnology, astronomy, Greek philosophical thought, as well as the vagaries of the human heart. A lovely read, which I am reading for the third time as I wait for the author's next, The Bestiary". Bravo!

5 out of 5 stars A Mystical Journey ..........2006-10-31

I have never heard of Nicholas Christopher before I found his book at a rummage sale ~~ and I didn't know what to expect when I started to read this novel. I definitely didn't expect something this beautiful and mystical and wonderful. I didn't expect a novel to be entwined with all the old myths, some old wives' tales and a beautiful and enduring romance between Mala and Cassiel. I didn't expect it to be a growing-up story of her nephew, Loren who was kidnapped from Mala (formerly named Alma) by his great-uncle, Junius Samax. I didn't expect it to be an educational novel ~~ where Christopher went into great details about constellations, history, spiders and hybrids among trees. I just didn't expect to fall in love with this novel. But I did.

This is one story that cannot be rushed through. It needs to be savored and enjoyed. It is a classic novel, meaning that while it entertains, it does have a plot that carries this book through to the last sentence. It is an intelligent book ~~ one that informs the reader while making it interesting. It is a book about life and hatred, age-old enemies, romance, broken dreams and love and death. It is about friendship and relationships. It covers so much over the span of 15 years or so. It is focused on two characters, Enzo and Mala, who searched for one another in their travels ~~ a young woman who was entrusted with her dead sister's son and the little boy who had seen so much in his young lifetime.

I definitely recommend this one ~~ especially for those who likes to read a novel in depth. It would make a great book club discussion as well. It's just divine.

5 out of 5 stars This was really good!.......2007-08-15

It's a western.

Jess Wilder is a bounty hunter looking hunting/tracking a horrible outlaw couple (man/woman).

The outlaws are on a stagecoach with Ariel, when the stagecoach is robbed, the outlaws set Ariel up to look like the female outlaw (handcuff her, etc) and they take Ariels money, identification, etc.

Along comes Jess, finds the stage coach, with (who he believes to be) the female outlaw handcuffed inside and (though she protests strongly and often) hauls in her for jailbait.

This was a fast paced, tender love story.

Very likeable characters.

5 out of 5 stars 10 STARS ***********.......2007-01-10

I LOVED this book. The hero and heroine are both such strong interesting characters and the clear precise writing style is such a pleasure to approach. The action starts from the beginning and takes you on a wild adventure, full of romance and steamy love scenes. I am a Connie Mason fan for life and can't wait to read more of her books! What a great movie this would make!

5 out of 5 stars Jess and Ariel-SPOILERS.......2006-09-28

Favorite scene with Ariel-
Pretending to be a boy when she came face to face with the outlaws. She was one smart cookie. And brave.

Favorite scene with Jess-
Pretending to be the whoremaster to save Ariel.

Together-
Making Jess choose between her and the outlaws.

What did you like about Ariel-
She wouldn't let any hardships keep her from her ranch. And Jess. She was a tough cookie.

What didn't you like about Ariel-
I didn't like when she gave Jess an ultimatum. Her or the outlaws. Jess loved his brother. His death deeply hurt Jess. He shouldn't have been forced to choose. She wouldn't listen to Rosalie regarding neighbor dude.

What did you like about Jess-
His strength. His sense of humor. How he put the fear of God into people. His love for Ariel. Although he wanted to kill the bad guys, he put Ariel first.

What didn't you like about Jess-
There wasn't anything I didn't like about Jess.

Casting Jess, I'd cast Julian McMahon.
Casting Ariel, I'd cast Renee Zellweger.

4 out of 5 stars 4.5 stars for a Wild Ride in the West!.......2004-10-06

This is an oldie but goodie from Ms. Mason. Written back in 1991, the age doesn't show as most books do from other authors in that same time period. A brutish hero and somewhat dim heroine. These two were very strong and very much worthy of a novel.
The hero was strong yet vulnerable and lovable. He made the reader wish he were real and we rooted for him constantly. He never took advantage of the heroine nor was selfish or mean, he was just plain perfect...in the sense that a hero can be 'perfect' without being a softy, boring moron, lol.
Ms. Mason really hit the mark here. As with all her heroes, she always manages to turn them into these gods that we the reader wish we could reach into the pages and bring them out. Jess Wilder, former US Marshall and now Texas Bounty Hunter is that man.
He's got his demons, but he never takes his eye off the ball and turns into a ...excuse me, but, jerk.
The heroine was far worthy of Jess. She was good and kind and never whiny nor flighty. Ariel Leland impressed me with her wit and courage and showed the kind of determination I imagine a lot of women of her day did on the ranches in Southwest Texas.
Their love was very real to the reader. In all, I liked this book a lot. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars was because I felt the villains were so interesting, Ms. Mason should've fleshed them out just a bit more and given them more parts in the story. They were very impressive and intriguing. I was left needing to know more about them.

Ariel Leland's stagecoach is attacked by bandits and she is found by bounty hunter, Jess Wilder. He mistakes her for one of the two bank robbers and killers back in San Antonio, Ms. Tilly Cowles. Apparently, Ariel looks identical to her and was even traveling with the two, but now, no one is there except her and she is shackled to the sheriff, who is dead now.
What's more frightening is the fact that Jess is attracted to the murdering witch who claims to be another. This wont work, he has to get her to the Marshall and find her lover.
Things get hairy when everything seems to go awry for Jess and it turns out, his hunt for the elusive Tilly and Dillon for the past 2 years is in vain, this woman isn't Tilly. Now what? He made a solemn promise to his dying brother to hunt them down. But this woman named Ariel seems like she may need him.
Loyalties torn and determination to see justice, Jess must decide. Can their love survive?

Hard Headed Jess, thought he had the answers to everything, mistaking Ariel as another women wanted for murder and bank robberies. She soon doesn't take long to get under his skin and the tavles are turned on him as he finds hes isn't always right. Very funny. Will read again!

If you choose to read this book, you will not find a dull moment from the moment you start. The story is interesting enough to keep you glued to know what happens next. The love scenes are well written and don't fall into easy eroticism or porn. The best part of this novel are its characters, they are exotic and seem to have a personality of their own. I caught myself feeling angry at the characters for their ups and downs during the story and I felt sorry when the book ended. Congratulations Janelle!

Gene Wolfe's Book of the Long Sun tetralogy ranks as one of the greatest literary achievements of 20th-century science fiction. Litany of the Long Sun, comprising the first two books in the series, is suffused with looming transcendence and theophany. Wolfe takes familiar speculative fiction tropes and embeds them in a tale so complex and wonderful that readers may find themselves wondering whether what they're reading is science fiction, fantasy, or something different altogether. Or whether it matters.

The story of Patera Silk, a devout priest whose destiny is wrapped up with the gods he serves, takes place within the Whorl, a vast, cylindrical starship that has traveled for generations and is crumbling into disrepair. Through a strange and amazing series of events, Silk finds himself descending to base thievery, running afoul of a notorious crime lord, befriending a cyborg soldier, and encountering at least one of the gods of Mainframe.

She shook her head almost imperceptibly. "All that abstinence! And now you've seen a goddess. Me. Was it worth it?"

        "Yes, Loving Kypris."

        She laughed again, delighted. "Why?"

The question hung in the silence of the baking sellaria while Silk tried to kick his intellect awake. At last he said haltingly, "We are so much like beasts, Kypris. We eat and we breed; then we spawn and die. The most humble share in a higher existence is worth any sacrifice."

But when Silk encounters the Outsider, who may be a God of a very different sort, all his beliefs are shaken to the core, and his life swiftly takes a messianic turn. In a rousing climax, Silk becomes the reluctant leader of a political rebellion against the corrupt Ayuntamiento, who rule the city-state of Viron.

It is not necessary to have read Wolfe's Book of the New Sun series, which takes place many centuries earlier, to enjoy the Long Sun novels, but keen-eyed readers will find many clues as to the origin of the Whorl and its gods in those stories. Further, although Wolfe's reputation for literary precision and trickery is well deserved, the Long Sun series (which continues in Epiphany of the Long Sun) is one of the more accessible places to start appreciating the author's treasures. --Therese Littleton

          5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Handbook.......2007-06-12

Billy Graham is ever the true believer but never an ideologue. He understands sin, Satan, and our Savior. His ability to interpret the Bible to form the rationale for good living is nothing short of miraculous. He points to his own trials, failures, and triumphs as well as those of others. Whatever is wrong with America now, we need to look at what was right to produce Billy Graham. He often references his mother and her knowledge of the Bible. Therein must lay a principal source of his knowledge, strength, and faith. Yet like John Paul, his is never rigid about the value of families in themselves. God has his plan for all of us, Graham reiterates. We need only start from here and go forward.

I don't know about you, but I like to see LOTS of pretty color pictures when I use a cookbook. This book has pictures of every important step and of the finished project. It also has a great review of important asian ingredients (about half the book is about ingredients). We've tried 4 or 5 of the recipies, and they have all been tasty and not too difficult to make. The only mildly difficult part of using this book is finding the ingredients (most of the ingredients can be found at a regular grocery store, but some probably require an Asian grocery store).

            5 out of 5 stars A Gem of A Book.......2000-06-17

I have used this "Treasure of A Book" for the last 20 years, when I first found a copy of it in my town's local library when I was 19 years of age. It has been especially useful while I went and after I graduated from Fashion Design School in Los Angeles. It has been an invaluable reference book, whenever I needed to find an ethic costume. For example, if I want to draw a Korean women in original costume dress. I just look under the country, alphabetically and there it is. I can easily see the traditional dress and sketch it. All the illustrations are excellent and show very good detail. The book does a very good job of representing many different ethic costumes of the world, even ones in countries that no longer exist. Many of the ethic costume designs are still used to this day in the countries that they come from. I have used it to draw illustrations showing different children from around the world. Also, I have used it for other kinds purposes including graphic design illustrations for restaurant menus and restaurant ads. I have returned to this book, over and over, as the best resource for all my needs. Even though, it was published in 1977, I still to this day find it the very best book of its kind.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction to Napa Valley/Sonoma - wine country!.......2004-03-03

This is an excellent overview of the heart of California wine country, Napa Valley & Sonoma. Loaded with lush photography and insight into the tradition of winemaking, the author takes another leap and provides you with fine dining and lodging selections in the areas as well. I especially liked the pictures of all of the labels and listings at the end of the book of all of the wineries from this area. This allows you to date and check off when you sampled that particular bottle as well as motivate the pursuit to sample all that these wineries have to offer. If you are planning a vacation to Napa or Sonoma, this is a must have.

5 out of 5 stars Everything you need for a great weekend!.......2003-12-11

We picked up a copy of this book last month for us to use on a weekend away in the wine country. Now we have bought several more for gifts to give for Christmas, and our copy sits on our coffee table at home. The author has captured all I needed to know about Napa and Sonoma, wihtout getting to bogged down in details/history. There are recommendations on where to eat, sleep, things to do, the history of the wine industry, how wine is made, and stunning pictures. With 15 minutes you can get so much info you wish there were more coffee table books with this much substance and this well written, with up to date info, but not skimping on the glorious photos.

                          Book Description

Today we know companies such as Gateway, Federal Express, and Virgin Atlantic Airlines as market leaders, but once upon a time, they were challenger brands. While scores of books explore the business side of world-class branding, until now, no book has addressed the critical role that graphic design strategy plays in successfully launching new brands into the marketplace.

Challenging the Big Brands offers brand creators, graphic designers, and advertising executives an inside look at the graphic design elements that have helped transform unknown companies into household names. Illustrated throughout with arresting four- color images, this book walks readers through dozens of successful graphic design strategies and shows the finished pieces that distinguished the campaign. Each case study includes insights—both from the client company and the design firm—on the creative process behind the project and the brilliant moves that helped catapult them to the top.

                          Book Description

"Red Hot Halle: The Story of an American Best Actress" is revealing! You'll meet Halle's "first love," the boy who caught her eye when she was just 11 and kept her interested for many years to come. It is intriguing! Find out how Halle lived the glamorous life as a teenager, dating a famous older man and traveling to London to compete for the Miss World title. This book is captivating! It shows a Halle Berry who, though wealthy, glamorous and famous, is very much like many other women who have been smacked around by adversity. Halle dealt with unkind lovers, and suffered rejection on a number of occasions. Importantly, Halle's story is inspiring because it tells of her will to learn from her mistakes and keep moving forward.

"Red Hot Halle" is chockfull of information about the history-making actress. It is the "complete" unauthorized biography about the movie star. Through exclusive interviews with Halle's first love, high school friends, boyfriends and colleagues to excerpted interviews throughout Halle's career, her full and controversial life is richly depicted. "Red Hot Halle" includes "the films of Halle Berry" and some two dozen photographs from her high school years to today.

"Red Hot Halle: The Story of an American Best Actress" is fascinating. When the actress delivered her very emotional acceptance speech at the Academy Awards, I was curious about her. I wanted to know where she was from, how she got started and what other movies she had played in. I wanted to know all about her background and what makes her tick. "Red Hot Halle" tells it all. It is a very factual account of Halle Berry's life and it has information about every movie she's ever been in. But it is more than just facts. The book tells Halle Berry's life story in an intriguing way introducing other very colorful characters, some big Hollywood players and some everyday people. The book is fast paced, funny at times, inspiring but yet disturbing as it chronicles the actress's struggles in relationships. "Red Hot Halle" is an excellent read.

After reading the intros of "Red Hot Halle" and "Aaliyah" on Kelly Kenyatta's site, my appetite grew to learn more of the two stars. I was excited when my book order arrived. I tore into the package and started reading Halle until my eyes couldn't stay open any longer because I couldn't stop reading. I'm almost through reading it and I'm enjoying every bit of it. I felt like I was there.............. When I picked the book up the next day to finish reading it, I found out there were only two pages left, but I was yearning for more, more............. I like Kelly Kenyatta's style. Her explanations of the other people in her stories are informative. It brings people like me, who don't know them, up to date and put me/us in a familiar time and a place. I couldn't wait to start reading Aaliyah. I have become a fan of Author Kelly Kenyatta.
