In his hugely impressive Abyssinian Chronicles Moses Isegawa renders the chaotic swirl of life in Uganda, from a lazy, remote village to the urban rush of Kampala. Containing within its 460 pages weddings, funerals, infidelities, public struggles with corrupt dictatorships (a section called "Amin, the Godfather"), and private struggles with God ("Seminary Years"), this is a first novel of epic ambitions. Narrated by Mugezi, the son of a man named Serenity and a woman named Padlock, Isegawa's book is wild and decentered, moving swiftly and confidently from place to place, from character to character. It is the kind of book that says, just follow, trust me, all these names and passions will sort themselves out and make sense sooner or later.

The prose itself bristles and cooks, with graceful transitions ("This time a year passed without hearing any news from Tiida") and scenes lurching with activity. Isegawa, who was born in Uganda but now lives in the Netherlands, is a master of unexpected verbs and details. Here Mugezi describes his mother's voice:

This woman knew how to irritate me on all fronts: her pathetic country-western girlie whine, xeroxed from a white nun from her convent days, the same nun from whom she had inherited the little tremolos which she sprinkled piously on the last hymn every night, really got to me.
Inconsistencies in the narrator's point of view can mar this novel and arrest its progress. The narrator will suddenly describe interior states he couldn't possibly know about: his mother's depression and loneliness, which she hides from everyone, the deepest thoughts of distant relatives. But for readers hoping to glimpse a foreign world, these bumps in the road are worth the ride. --Ellen Williams

Book Description

Like Salman Rushdie's Midnight's Children and Gabriel Garcia Marquez's One Hundred Years of Solitude, Moses Isegawa's Abyssinian Chronicles tells a riveting story of twentieth-century Africa that is passionate in vision and breathtaking in scope.

At the center of this unforgettable tale is Mugezi, a young man who manages to make it through the hellish reign of Idi Amin and experiences firsthand the most crushing aspects of Ugandan society: he withstands his distant father's oppression and his mother's cruelty in the name of Catholic zeal, endures the ravages of war, rape, poverty, and AIDS, and yet he is able to keep a hopeful and even occasionally amusing outlook on life. Mugezi's hard-won observations form a cri de coeur for a people shaped by untold losses.

5 out of 5 stars One of my top 10 all time favorites.......2004-08-29

This book is a must read before travel to Uganda. It contains wonderful character development and provides a learning experience about life in Uganda and its history. Written from a Ugandan perspective. I read this book and the Brandt travel guide on Uganda before a 8/04 trip to Uganda and was enthralled with both. Much better than "Gravity of Sunlight". Read Abyssinian and be prepared for hours of fascinating people, culture and history.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful book, truly moving and enthralling!.......2001-12-30

I started reading this book at 9:00 am this morning and finished it 12 hours later, no one could pull me away from this gem! What a wonderfully written book... if one doesn't know much about Africa and the political, cultural, religious conflicts that are so much a part of my continent, then this book is for you. Make no mistake, though, this is no boring, uncaptivating book, it is extremely entertaining, yet also very informative. At times I found myself laughing out loud and re-reading passages over and over again, at other times, I felt a cold shiver creep down my spine, reminding me of the Ugandans I met when I was growing up in Africa and recounting the horrirific stories they told me. If you are to buy just one book in 2002, let it be this one. Be warned, though, when you pick it up to read, make sure it is on a day when you have nothing else scheduled to do. You will NOT be able to put it down. Moses Isegawa is a marvelous writer, I cannot wait to see what he will come up with next. This is the kind of book that deserves the Booker Prize....but then again, that's all political...isn't it?

5 out of 5 stars Is Moses Isegawa a Ugandan Bellow?.......2000-10-26

There are some authors whose books I feel compelled to read: Saul Bellow, Garcia-Marquez, Isabelle Allende are examples- the writing is so immediate and beautiful. To this group I am adding Moses Isegawa. His story is fascinating- I take it that this is autobiographical. He understands life in terms of power struggles- first his Edenic existence with his grandparents, particularly his midwife grandma, whom he assisted; then his life with troubled and tyrannical parents, school bullies, an oppressive stint at Catholic boarding school, later adventures in business, avoiding trouble during the Amin years, subsequent emigration to Europe. At every turn there is someone trying to thwart him and whom he outsmarts with stealth and patience. There are a host of eccentric characters and natural disasters to be coped with. The customs of Uganda are so different from what we Americans are used to, yet the author conveys how the people are so like us in feelings and motivation. He might be called cynical, but it's just reality that he describes - and he is likeable. The writing is superb. The idiom seems American- do they really talk like us over there? How does he do that? I enjoyed this book as much as Bellows' whose midwestern Jewish background I share.

3 out of 5 stars great "Life inside of ..." details but cynically colored.......2000-09-06

Isegawa's book offered me a view of life inside of Uganda that is difficult to find elsewhere. While I appreciated his insights, his cynicism paints an additionally dreary picture that needed no additional dark coloring. He frequently goes far overboard in discriptive language as though to give us a class on colorful descriptions. I was offended at his caustic evaluations of the helping agencies, throwing a blanket comdemnation of the lot as a self-serving condescending bunch (my words). One quickly picks up his feeling of despair for the country's future while he offers no light or solutions of his own based on his insight and experience. If the reader develops their own opinions as how to view or support Uganda based on Isegawa's insights, then the country of Uganda was done a disservice by this book.

5 out of 5 stars First-class reading you will hate to put down.......2005-10-14

I was spellbound from the first page; Maggie Shayne has proven her talent again in this novel. I love the vampire stories and hope Maggie will keep on writing them.

4 out of 5 stars Wings in the Night : 3 beginning stories in the series........2005-07-10

1. Twilight Phantasies: Story of Eric Marquand, vampire and French nobleman, and Tamara, clerical secretary for the Division of Paranormal Investigations (DPI). Eric is lured by the call of Tamara as he watches her skate upon the ice. He senses that she is one of the "Chosen Ones" (a mortal who vampires feel the need to protect and can potentially also become vampire). However he quickly senses a trap when he realizes that she is one of "them"...a DPI agent.

I liked this story, it isn't dark or brooding, sort of like reading a sitcom. The chemistry is there and you learn about the background of how one becomes vampire in this particular tale.

2. Twilight Memories: This is the story of two ancients Roland and Rhiannon. They have a tortured history with each other. Roland denies Rhiannon at ever turn and she suffers his loss every day. That is until they must unite to save Jameson, a child who also happens to be a Chosen One (a character that is continued from the first story).

I liked this story because of the unrequited love aspect....love to always wonder instead of things being a forgone conclusion.

3. Twilight Illusions: This is the story of Damien and Shannon. Damien has shunned his vampire kind and lives out in the open as a magician. Shannon has lost her best friend Tawny after she assisted in Damien's show...so have a lot of other girls. She is determined to get to the bottom of this mystrey and reveal Damien for the murderer he is.

I liked this story because it had a mystery to solve and a evil villian who actually seemed evil and not cartoony. Loads of chemistry.

Why I recommend the Twilight series? Well I enjoy vampire tales. And Christine Feehan books make me ill (she could buy a few adjectives). These books are light reading, well written, and you get just enough of the supernatural aspects. The stories are centered around the romance and there is just enough sex that is meaningful and without pandering (Hot, but very tasteful).

Why not 5 stars? Well these vampires could be more darker. They have a whole moral code, they don't drink from humans (at least not often) and that is where Feehan is sometimes a bit better (although she always wipes their minds so it's just as innocuous.) I wish she would be a bit more daring and unapologetic with a vampires nature. These stories have the same feel as Buffy the Vampire Slayer series.

4 out of 5 stars Enjoyable.......2005-03-14

I read one of Shayne's latest books and liked it so much that I backtracked to be able to read them all in order. This book contains the first three of this series: "Twilight Phantasies," "Twilight Memories," and Twilight Illusions." The first two I didn't like as much as the others I read. They were too tamed and reminded me too much of Christine Freehan. The vampires are so overly nice. Also, the plot centers only around the romance. The third, I found was much, much better. Probably because there was a mystery to solve and it was not all sex. I think there was only two sex scenes in all. I perfer the action to be enhanced by the romance, not the other way around.

I'm definately reading more. Considering my experience so far with this author, I'm hoping she only gets better.

3 out of 5 stars Not dark enough.......2004-08-03

After reading all the good reviews about this book, I was disappointed. I've read quite a few other vampire novels that I enjoyed, and this just wasn't what I was expecting. The vampires were way too tame. The fact that they need to drink blood automatically makes you fear them, but there's that thrill that attracts you too. These vampires weren't mysterious at all and didn't attract me to want to find out their stories. There was a lot of romanticism of the vampires, which I don't mind, but the darker nature that I expected to find, and even like about them, was just missing. I usually enjoy a romance novel, but I found this one to be too melodramatic and shallow. It was a quick read but not enough meat to the characters and the stories. I gave it 3 stars because I actually finished the entire book and was entertained, but I wasn't impressed and will not continue with the series. I do enjoy Charlaine Harris and Laurell K. Hamilton's vampire novels. I also just finished the Blood series by Tanya Huff that I liked too. These are definitely darker (and more gruesome) than Maggie Shayne, Hamilton's more than the others.

5 out of 5 stars Truly Unforgettable.......2004-01-10

This series is amazing. The love scenes between the characters are some of the best that I have ever read. Very erotic and passionate. The characters are extrememly likable. The only thing I did grow a little tired of was the Division of Paranormal Investigations constantly hounding the steps of the vampires trying to capture them and test them like lab rats. I would highly recommend Wings in the Night along with the other Twilight book that continue the story. Maggie Shayne is incerdible and my favorite author by far.

4 out of 5 stars Great book.......2000-02-22

While I still believe the second in the series "Twilight Memories" is my favorite, this book stands up well with the rest of the Wings of the Night series. The explanations of the legends of Gilgamesh was fascinating and returning the characters from the previous books was inspired as well. The hero is outstanding. The heroine isn't my favorite but the rest of the book makes up for any fault to be found in her.

I loved this book. You really start to care about the charactors and what happens to them. Get it!

5 out of 5 stars Time Travel with the Animorphs.......2007-01-19

This is my favorite of all of the books in the Animorphs series. The Animorphs go back in time chasing Visser Four to restore their timeline to normal. The price for being able to follow the Time Matrix is terrible, however,...one of their number must die. I love how the author works through the time travel scenario and how she focuses on how the slightest detail can change so much more than one would think.

4 out of 5 stars Chun, Matthew - Animorphs .......2006-03-27

The Yeerks are parasites that go inside your body and control you. The only ones that can save them are a bunch of kids with supernatural powers. They could turn into any animal they wanted to. They are called the Animorphs. The Animorphs are spending a usual meeting when suddenly a drode appears. He tells them that this isn't really they re time line. Then transports them to the real timeline, He tells him the Visser Four the main enemy has found the most powerful weapon in history. The Time Matrix and he is in an actor host. So the Animorphs have a chance to follow the Visser through time and try to stop him. But, in payment one of them must die. Even though they didn't talk about it they all knew who was going to die. Jake, the leader of the team had decided he would die, and everyone knew it. On their travels they find out that the Visser was trying to do everything he could and try to destroy the human race and make them easy to conquer. So the Animorphs go around and trying to stop Visser Three Jake, the leader and Rachel Jakes cousin die in the battle. However, the deal was only one of them must die. So Jake died and so Rachel came back to life. Which meant in other words everyone else was immortal and could not die. Then finally they catch the Visser four trying to leave the host body actor and kill him by throwing him in a fire. They ask the Actor a few questions. But, still their leader Jake was gone forever and all they had was a time machine. The Time Matrix. Then Cassie thinks up the idea that if they could travel back in time cant they change the future. One of the questions they asked was where is parents met. So they go back into the time and place exactly where his parents met and stop his parents from meeting. Then Jake the leader of the team comes back to life and meets them. He asks if they made it right, the way it was supposed to be but they said no. They didn't make it right but, they fixed it.
I liked this book for two reasons. I liked it because I liked the fact of them traveling though time. Also I liked this book because it's full of action. Like I said this book is pretty cool because they get to time travel. In their travels they go to historical places and meet historical people like George Washington. They also went into World War Two, met a King, Hitler and almost met Einstein.
Another reason I liked this book was because it was full of action. There were a lot of battle scenes. Like World War Two and when they met George Washington when he was crossing a river, when they met Hitler. Also when they were trying to catch Visser Four.
My favorite part of the book would have to be when Jake comes back to life. I liked this part because they found a glitch in the rules. A wormhole where they could go though and save everyone. That the drodes supreme leader could not see. So that was pretty cool.

5 out of 5 stars The best Animorphs book by far........2002-02-09

This is THE best Animorphs book by a long way. At first it was a little weird with melissa in the group and jake insisting on being called "supreme leader" and other weird things. Its about a controller named Henry, who used to be visser 4 but got demoted. He finds the Time Matrix and uses it to go back to important scenes and battles in earths history e.g. American War of Independece and D-Day. He then changes tries to change the outcomes of these battles so that the humans become a weaker species and easier to conquer. The ellimist and the Drode strike a truce in their war against each other to make the animorphs go to whatever time and place former visser 4 goes to stop him messing up the timeline. But the Drode wants something in return.

This is an AWESOME book and is a must buy.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent ADVENTURE.......2002-01-03

Elfangor's secret was a very great one that no one knew about. But, somehow Visser Four stumbles upon it and starts to change history so that the Yeerks could win the war with humans. The world is changing, Rachel doesn't even exist. Jake is a tyrant Marco is this [messed] up kid. Then Crayak will offer the original Animoprhs a trail on Visser Four and in return he will take one of their lives. This is definitely on of the best Animorphs books and anyone should read it.

5 out of 5 stars THIS BOOK ROCKS THE HOUSE!.......2001-05-14

This book is great! Ive read it twice now and I still like it alot (of corse I've loved all the animorphs books). If you really really like jake in the story.....sorry hes well kind of gone in this one but anyway this book is really good.

5 out of 5 stars Best CD Devotional.......2007-05-22

Joni Erickson Tada's voice has a calming effect on the spirit as she lovingly presents God's Word on this devotional CD. It is challenging and encouraging with a stimulating application presentation.

I purchased this devotional from Amazon for my father-in-law who is 90 years of age and has lost a great deal of his vision. He had contacted Daily Bread Ministries, but they had no recorded devotionals to offer him.

My father-in-law listened to half of the devotionals with my husband and myself. We were all quite pleased whereby he requested I purchase more of this series for him.

I do highly rate this item for those on the go, blind or invalid.

Indulgence is hardly the first word that comes to mind when one thinks of a vegan diet, but in Very Vegetarian, chef Jannequin Bennett proves that the two concepts are more closely related than one might think. After all, she explains, vegans "regularly partake of the very best foods--the most nutritious, appealing and tasty--that nature has to offer."

With more than 250 recipes, Bennett proves that you don't need animal products to eat delicious and satisfying foods. Soups, like Chunky Polish Borscht and Harvest Vegetable, are as hearty as any Grandma used to make. Appetizers like Spicy Corn Blini with Red Peppers and Shitakes and Artichoke and Spinach Phyllo Triangles will delight guests, and none will miss the traditional additions of meat and cheese. Entrées--from pastas and risottos to vegetable casseroles and baked, barbecued, and seared tofu dishes--are surprisingly appealing. With dishes like White Bean Ravioli with Caramelized Onion Sauce and Acorn Squash Stuffed with Wild Rice and Winter Fruits, Bennett brings a sophisticated culinary approach to this oft-maligned way of cooking and eating. Some of the desserts suffer from the use of vegan margarine and the lack of eggs, but Bennett hits the right note with those that rely on fresh fruit for flavor and texture, such as Pear Betty and Watermelon Ice.

Useful advice on how to ensure that you get the nutrition you need, how to continue to enjoy dining out, where to shop, and much more make this book a boon to vegans who aren't willing to give up flavorful meals for their health concerns or ethical beliefs. --Robin Donovan

        Book Description

The number of people choosing meatless meals is on the increase. And a vegan vegetarian diet -- one without any animal products -- is an unusually healthy one because it is high in fiber, low in saturated fat, and very nutritious. "Too many vegan recipes have relied on exotic and difficult-to-find ingredients or tedious, time-consuming techniques," says Jannequin Bennett, executive chef of a restaurant in a AAA Five Diamond, Mobile Five Star hotel. "But Very Vegetarian has recipes made with common foodstuffs that are uncommonly delicious."

Very Vegetarian is presented by and introduced by 9-time Olympic gold medal winner Carl Lewis, who says that a vegan diet of fresh fruits and vegetables, whole complex carbohydrates, high quality proteins, and natural fats is the best way to ensure a person's health and longevity.

In addition to a wide range of more than 250 mouth-watering recipes, Very Vegetarian includes a helpful introduction about eating vegan and 16 pages of beautiful four-color photographs. The book will help the person who is beginning to choose meatless meals by providing nutritional information and recipes featuring familiar foods and techniques. For those who have more experience with a plant-based diet, the book offers recipes that will broaden their culinary horizons.

5 out of 5 stars Vegan Kitchen Staple.......2005-08-22

I bought this cookbook when I was first transitioning into a vegan diet. It has been the most useful cookbook I have ever owned. I've made several recipes from it & they have all been fabulous! My favorite is the blueberry bran muffins - they're delicious! It also has very helpful advice on proper bean preparation as well as several different ways to prepare tofu. I don't know what I would do without this cookbook.

4 out of 5 stars Simply good food, simply prepared!!.......2004-12-27

Rice - how to cook it several ways and a biscuit made with soy milk served as the basis for me purchasing this book. I have checked it out of the library several times and always hated to turn it back in because the things I was trying to fix by converting standard recipes has already been done here by Executive Chef Bennett.

I read the book and I thought, this doesn't sound too bad, but I found myself miserable. I just was frustrated after a week....it was very regimented. [...]

Another book I bought was the South Beach Diet book. I read that book and found the plan to be made up of things I would eat and the items were normal grocery store items so no hunting at the health food stores or buying online.

        1 out of 5 stars impractical.......2004-11-03

The recipes call for fancy, hard-to find ingredients and are difficult to follow. The book seems to be geared more toward impressing us with the author's knowledge than actually sharing recipes. Also, the ones I've tried haven't come out very well. There are much better vegan cookbooks out there.

5 out of 5 stars I'm going to make every recipe!.......2004-02-05

I am not vegan, but I got this cookbook 6 weeks ago and have been making nothing but its recipes ever since. So far, in the appetizers section, I've made the spinach and mushroom quesadillas (excellent, flavorful and beany) and the bruschetta with sun-dried tomato pesto and portobello mushrooms (beautiful presentation). The mushroom stock smelled great the whole time cooking. The miso soup was easy and quick, as were the potato and lentil soups. I've been delighted with how much flavor is in each dish. My friends have loved the basic, mustard-sherry and sesame-soy vinaigrettes. The potato salad was simple and tasty, although I did use real mayonnaise. Roasted red pepper coulis - I never would have thought of that on my own. The black bean burgers didn't hold together well, but the portobello mushroom burgers (cook in red wine) were AMAZING. Possibly my favorite so far. The spaghetti lentil sauce is delicious, and the sweet and sour eggplant stew was quickly eaten up in my house. The lemon zucchini risotto is summery and surprisingly light. I recommend soaking sun-dried tomatoes in hot water first, and then the farfalle with sun-dried tomatoes and portobellos is delightful. Macaroni and cheez - you have to enjoy the taste of yeast. I didn't care for it, but my housemates ate it up in one night. The apples in the curried couscous are a perfect pairing. The broccolli rabe dish was the best way I've ever had broccoli rabe before, although I omit the pine nuts because they're expensive. The acorn squash stuffed with wild rice and dried fruits is a perfect cold winter night dish - and it looked so pretty! The glazed tofu was amazingly flavorful considering how easy it is. No sheep's sheperd's pie has a delightful thyme flavor - I fed it to a true vegan who thorougly approved. You'd never believe there was tofu in the tofu banana bread. The pumpkin bread is great for sandwiches - not sweet, but savory. The whole wheat quick bread really is fast and easy - a great way to have fresh bread around without all the trouble. I decided pizza crust is too much of a hassle for me, but fresh pizza sauce is really not hard and wakes up your taste buds. The scrambled tofu and hash browns together make a great meal. Congee, a rice breakfast with pickled vegetables, was a new experience for me and I really liked it! The buckwheat cakes are great with the spiced apple maple sauce. I think of the muffins, I liked the good morning muffins best, but my house loved the blueberry bran and the polka dot muffins are good enough to be desert. Two of my vegan friends ate an entire pan of brownies in one sitting, and I brought the sugar cookies to a party and returned with an empty plate. The chocolate pudding was a bit too soy for me, but the pear betty was syrupy sweetness! That's all I've made so far, but it's inspired me to try so many new things, and the techniques just keep getting easier. It's making each meal time special. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to experiment with their cuisine in healthy, fulfilling ways. I would recommend a set of good knives, a food processor, and a fresh herbs budget to fully appreciate this book.

2 out of 5 stars Very! Very! Disappointing!.......2003-05-18

I was anticipating receiving this book, as I enjoy vegetarian food and don't mind meat substitutes, but was disappointed to find that almost all of the recipes call for "prepared" Asian meat substitutes (vegetarian cuttlefish, dried gluten balls etc.) that are nearly *impossible* to find, even online, it seems. Perhaps if one lived in a city that has a *large* Asian population and well stocked groceries, it wouldn't be a problem. I cook Asian and ethnic foods quite a bit, and my local Asian grocery is quite good, but I've never encountered any of these. Perhaps some could be substituted with TVP or similar, but the descriptions of the meat subs are so vague ("vegetarian meat," "vegetarian meat chunks" with corresponding pictures that really don't resemble anything I've ever seen before) that I would be afraid to try. I am familiar with the Wei Chuan cook books and realize that most already assume that you know something about what you're doing, but this one is particularly vague. So, I would really skip this book unless you have access to these unusual items (which frankly, sound very good and I would like to try!)

1 out of 5 stars Very Very Vegetarian.......2000-07-01

This cookbook is very, very bad. The recipes are really unappetizing. There is a picture given with every recipe, but all of the food looks gross. I have been a vegetarian for 12 years and LOVE Chinese food, but this cookbook is the pits. This cookbook seems to cater to vegetarians that still crave the taste of meat. Most of the recipes call for fake pork (gross) or chicken, fish(eel, cuttlefish even). Do not invest in this cookbook.

Every year, when this time comes around I'm happy for two reasons. First it is Spring, and we can stop wearing all those heavy winter clothes, and second because the new CVA is in (or is it the other way around?)

CVA is easily the bestest, most organized, and fully realized comicbook price guide on the market. It is assembled by a crack team of professionals dedicated to the project, and thoroughly respected in the field of comics and collectibles.

This one far and away beats the competition. Always with great articles and/or interviews, as well as easily organized into "company" chapters, which makes finding specific titles much simpler.

Yes boys and girls, this one is - most definitely - the cat's meow!

The *OJO DE DIOS* folk art is a true spirit-lifter. It can remind people that though its use was most prevalent among the Huichol Indians of Mexico, in today's society we also benefit from God's protection & benevolence.

The interesting history of "God's Eyes" all the way from South America through Mexico, and among native Americans, is told by author Charlet Albaum in this excellent 1972 text. Indian lore relating to Creation, and gratefulness for tasks completed is included, and also the meaning of some of the symbolic uses and forms. It would benefit from more color photographs, hence 4 stars.

Today's craft lovers are attracted to the scope of colors and textures they can use in making these fairly simple pieces. They can be made in any size; I particularly like them as miniature talismans /AND/ as individualized picture frames! Reviewer mcHAIKU suggests that you encourage the creative juices of young people. They will respond enthusiastically to this satisfying craft & it will add alot of color and make your Easter decorating unique.

A unique, original, how-to handbook. Ojo de Dios gives clear and simple directions for turning sticks and yarn into an Eye of God-an authentic, ancient, Indian "prayer" for the protection and benevolence of God.

The fundamentals of crafting the colorful God'e Eye figures are fully presented and explained to serve as a basis for the creation of original and unique designs. Handcrafters, interested in producing one-of-a-kind talisman for home use or gift-giving, can quickly and easily alter patters, shapes and designs to enhance any color scheme and fit any available space, large or small. Included, for the less adventurous craftsman, are precise, step-by-step directions for weaving 19 lovely charms, to protect as well as decorate the home. Ojo-crafting offers excellent opportunity for creative expression, skill and personal satisfaction, and an inexpensive alternative to the usual store-bought, mass-produced prints of the masters, commercial plaques and pop posters.

Easily mastered by young and old alike, the Ojo de Dio is truly a craft for all times and all ages.

4 out of 5 stars Good Book to Stimulate Ideas.......2005-11-24

This book has a lot of really good ideas for small areas, including nooks and crannies. I was amazed at how you can decorate some really small areas, even though I don't have any nooks as small as some of them. It is a beautifully photographed book and doesn't seem to be afraid to use colors. I would say there are a variety of styles represented in the book, but it tends to lean more to the traditional with an occ. formal country look (florals, stripes, etc).

When I read a decor book I put tabs on pages that either gave me ideas or when I liked the rooms. Even though the book has good ideas, I only placed tabs on 8 pages.

I do think it is worth the price and I don't regret buying it. It had some innovative and great designs for small spaces.

This book is one of the clearest explanations of the creative process of an artist available anywhere. Shahn speaks of painting, of course, but his lucid, interesting text, his ideas and explorations, apply to artists in any field. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars One of the few truly great primary sources on Modern Art.......1998-02-25

Ben Shan's "The Shape of Content" in many ways truly defines the thinking of artists in a time that might be considered the height of modern american painting and art. It is an enormously human and genuine dialogue on art of the fifties. Few books so clearly establish how and why one becomes an artist. It is written with soul, intelligence, and great humanism while totally avoiding the sophistry of the critics and journalists writing about art at that time in American society. A great book!

5 out of 5 stars An excellent collection of essays on art by an artist........1997-06-03

Based on a series of six lectures given by Shahn at Harvard University in the 1950's, this collection gives an overview of Shahn's ideas and opinions on such topics as the education of artists, the creative process, the nonconformity of artists, and appraisals of various modern art movements and artists. Shahn is a surprisingly gifted writer. His arguments are clearly reasoned and his tone is that of an art historian or philosopher. At the same time, the book is an intimate look at Shahn the artist. It is illustrated with numerous pen and ink sketches by Shahn

One of my favorite books, all about words - some real, taken out of context, and listed by categories, like: "Light Words" (lissom, sibilant, nimble...), "Names for Elephants" (Wilbur, Bendigo, Wendell Tubb, Deuteronomy...), etc. Other words are completely invented and defined such as "a GONGOZZLER is an idle person who is always stopping in the street and starting at a curious object like a TINGLE-AIREY." The illustrations by Ben Shahn are also wonderful. Great fun to read aloud, and likely to lead to imaginative family word play!

Pair this with Richard Wilbur's Opposites, More Opposites, and a Few Differences.

I had this book as a I kid and I'm thrilled that it's still around. It's meant as a children's book, but I remember all the adults in our household loved it as well. It uses language in the style of Ogden Nash to give odd names to common things. It lists large-sounding names for elephants and matching names for twins. It has it's own style of counting that goes "ounce, dice, trice, quartz, quince, etc." Any child who lovers word play will love this book.

When I was much younger I stumbled across a book of his with mostly black and white reproductions. I instantly loved his ability of filling up a composition in odd but logical ways. This book shows most of Mr. Shahn's paintings in color. I consider him a subtle yet sometimes bold colorist. Especially those reds. Now i can fully marvel at his work. Also grab the book "Common man, mythic vision". By all means, also check out Jack levine, Philip Evergood, Rico Lebrun and the rest of the American Expressionists/ Social Realists. So they won't be forgotten in time.

"This monograph on Ben Shahn, the first in over twenty years, follows his career as the leading social realist of our time. It covers his Depression-era images of urban decay, labor strikes, and poverty; the posters he created for the Office of War Information during World War II and his paintings of the destruction in war's aftermath; and his eventual rejection of social realism in favor of a 'personal realism' using allegory and symbolism. This book weaves a complex picture of this multifaceted artist and includes many extracts from Shahn's writings.

This collaboration between the posthumous words of Ranier Marie Rilke and the drawings of Ben Shahn slows the pace of Rilke's hauting verbal images as one steps into the sanctity of Shahn's graphic images of one man's life. Each step along the pilgrim's path is exquisitely described by Shahn's primal lithographs. Birth, Attachment, Travel, Wonder, Illness and Death as described simply but poignantly by Rilke are transformed into stages of devotion in the search for a single verse. Life itself becomes the metaphor for the poet's calling, and the artist captures the awe and anxiety of the transformation. This is a book you'll want to hand on to your children for generations to appreciate such a collaboration.

                                    Book Description

Ben Shahn (1898-1969) has long been renowned for his Social Realist paintings of Depression-era America. Equally striking, however, are Shahn's extraordinary later works, which reveal a more introspective style as well as the evolution of a new allegorical and mythical pictorial language. This book combines beautiful reproductions of Shahn's art with essays by leading experts on his life and career to present a groundbreaking survey of his powerful and engaging mature style. The volume is published in conjunction with a major traveling exhibition organized by The Jewish Museum, New York, to commemorate the centenary of Shahn's birth. The book contains more than one hundred illustrations, including thirty-two in color.

Susan Chevlowe opens the book by situating Shahn's art in the context of his long and remarkable career. She explains how Shahn became disillusioned with partisan ideologies of the 1930s, moving away in the 1940s and 1950s from critiques of specific social issues to explore universal human concerns and subjective experiences, including his own childhood memories. She also explores the increasing use of allegory, myth, and biblical imagery in Shahn's later work. Diana L. Linden examines the central importance of Shahn's secular Jewish identity in shaping his artistic responses to social and political issues, immigration, and war in murals created in the New Deal era. Stephen Polcari places Shahn in the context of his artistic contemporaries, showing how artists who worked in radically different styles--Regionalists, Expressionists, and Abstract Expressionists--were similarly engaged in a tense reexamination of the fate of humanity in the postwar period. Frances K. Pohl focuses on three of Shahn's most important paintings: Allegory (1948), Second Allegory (1953), and Third Allegory (1955). She argues that these works represent Shahn's search for a new symbolic language to express the personal and political upheavals of the post-Holocaust era marked by atomic weapons and the Cold War. The book also includes an illustrated chronology of Shahn's career, compiled by Howard Greenfeld, author of a major new biography of the artist.

This beautifully illustrated book will stimulate new critical and popular interest not only in the compelling late works but also in the entire career of a major American artist.

I was given this catalog recently as a holiday gift. I didn't know much about Shahn's late works. This catalog provides ample illustrations, discussion of key late paintings, as well as considers the importance of Shahn's ethnic heritage and involvement with the Left during the 1930s. A great look at a favorite painter.

There was a time when nearly everyone recognized Ben Shahn's scathing pictures from his most famous series, The Passion of Sacco and Vanzetti, 1932. Sacco and Vanzetti, two working-class anarchists convicted on trumped-up murder charges, lie dead in their coffins. Behind them stand the top-hatted men of the old, Anglo establishment, hypocritically mourning the poor immigrants whose lives they destroyed.

These days, it may be hard to understand how vital such storytelling artists were to the political life of their times. In Ben Shahn: An Artist's Life, Howard Greenfeld does justice to those heady days, placing both Shahn and his work in the context of the Great Depression, the rise of unions and social relief programs, and the beginnings of the civil rights movement. With uncommon fairness, Greenfeld also chronicles the difficult, contradictory personal life of this brilliant artist, who, for example, began and ended his career working on Jewish themes but cruelly abandoned his first wife, Tillie, and their two children to marry a Christian woman.

Greenfeld adeptly traces Shahn's development as one of the 20th century's most important illustrators and narrative artists, comparable to Daumier and even to Goya. Carefully researched, this biography is simultaneously respectful and objective. Greenfeld, who has also written biographies of Puccini, Caruso, and art collector Albert C. Barnes, has a gift for seeing a densely complicated life as an understandable, admirable whole. --Peggy Moorman

                                          Book Description

Beginning in the thirties, he created bold and powerful paintings of often controversial subjects, and in particular his portraits of Sacco and Vanzetti caused a storm whenever they were exhibited. After working as an assistant to Diego Rivera on the ill-fated Rockefeller Center mural, he began creating his own arresting murals--in Washington, New York, and New Jersey--which are among the finest such works ever painted in this country. He also excelled as a photographer as one of the distinguished group known as the FSA photographers, which included Dorothea Lange and his close friend Walker Evans. His life  crossed the paths of many others, too, including Albert Einstein, Alexander Calder, William Carlos Williams, Archibald MacLeish, and S. J. Perelman.

During World War II, he produced some of the most striking and effective propaganda posters, before returning again to painting, always choosing subjects that touched a nerve and were just as often politically powerful.

Shahn also entered the world of advertising, but completely on his own terms, and was respected for it. His life was always involved directly with his times, and he was a member of the intellectual community throughout his career, as well as a courageous political activist. His unique, unforgettable work won him shows in museums all over America, including the Museum of Modern  Art.

Ben Shahn is the first complete life of the artist, and it is illustrated throughout with his photographs, pictures, and paintings.

Ben Shahn (1898-1964) was at once a painter and photographer who claimed himself not to make a distinction between the two, though the critics and scholars have always given privilege to the paintings. Shahn preferred the hand-held 35mm Leica and an anglefinder (a device like a periscope that allowed him to photograph people without pointing his camera at them) to the cumbersome large-format cameras. He shot what he called the "living theatre"-the unconscious expression of working class and immigrant populations on NYC streets-and left a poignant record of the worst years of the Great Depression. The point this really good book makes is that, paintings aside, Shahn's photographs have strong impact and intrinsic value. Shahn's view of NYC ignores the skyscrapers and bridges that many of his contemporaries fixed on and gives us NYC at street level, eye level.
