In her debut novel Bling, Erica Kennedy exposes the dark underside of the hip-hop recording industry in the same way The Nanny Diaries outed the Park Avenue elite. Kennedy charts the course of Mimi, a small-town girl from Ohio who is discovered by Lamont Jackson, a hip-hop mogul who discards of gym clothing after one use and sends potential bedmates to his personal physician for a full work-up before hitting the sheets. Secondary characters like Lena Whitaker, the spoiled daughter of an LA lawyer who unknowingly foots the bill for trinkets like a $15,000 diamond necklace for Crazy G, Lena's booty call of the month, and Lamont's cocaine-snorting, Gucci-wearing, sister-in-law Vanessa de la Cruz, quickly become Mimi's image and social consultants. Rounding out the crew are a host of rappers who work for Lamont, including Ernesto, aka Phat E, a bear of a man who "raps about his slick girl-getting abilities" yet goes home every night to his high-school sweetheart Renee, who "was proud to walk the halls with Ernesto even though he had ballooned to 280 pounds by senior prom."

Bling takes readers on an insider's tour of the world of parties in the Hamptons, VIP lounges, fashion shows, and Tribeca penthouses. In fact, the tour is so intimate that many readers will recognize thinly veiled faces along the way, like Ally C., the blond-haired, blue-eyed publicist from Long Island, and Irv Greene, the aging music executive from Brooklyn. Kennedy leaves no stone unturned; there's even a prepubescent rapper aptly named Billy Tha Kid. All these details make for a very long book, and by the end, readers may find themselves skimming the pages to find out what eventually happens. Still, for anyone who has ever wondered what goes through the minds of P. Diddy and his entourage as they emerge from the Escalade, Bling promises to enthrall and entertain. --Gisele Toueg

1 out of 5 stars Couldn't Even Finish It.......2007-08-17

I always finish books. Always. I decided not to waste my time. Got this book free, so thought I'd give it a shot. With Mimi as the main character, I was into it...small town girl makes big...I liked being in her head. But as soon as the cliche female rapper came in, I was finished. I'm not easily offended by anything, but I do get bored when the content doesn't further the story at all.

2 out of 5 stars So-so .......2007-07-13

Not one of my favorite books, but I kept reading it because I spent $$$$ on the hardcover edition (tying to support a sister who's handling her business) and was hoping that the story would improve. It didn't for me, at least. I also wanted to try to identify who in real life the characters were based on. I didn't particularly like anyone-- and the epilogue was written as though the author just wanted to hurry and finish the book to meet a deadline. However, if you're fascinated by the music industry and all of the movers and shaker in it, you'll probably like it. Don't expect it to be intellecutally stimulating.

5 out of 5 stars Finally, a true to life Hip Hop classic!.......2007-06-09

Bling is quite the page turner indeed! Whether you finish this entire book on a cross-Atlantic flight from LA to Paris, or while sipping a mojito on the beach in Cabo San Lucas, you too will feel like fantasizing once you've been given exclusive VIP access to hip hop's elite in this page turning rags to riches tale. Author, Erica Kennedy's exceptional penchant for scenery, tone, plot, character development, and dialogue makes, Bling and easy read from start to finish with plenty of obliquely disguised juicy gossip ripped straight from the headlines in between. And though the entire manuscript is almost a whopping 500 pages, it's well worth every delicious morsel.

This is the true to life account of Mimi, a young aspiring singer from Toledo, OH, and her adolescent fantasy to become the next megastar of the neoclassic soul genre with complete creative control. Instead throughout the course of the novel, Mimi learns the brutal reality of what it takes to actually "sell" records in a world that is increasingly being overrun by the popularity of the "hip hop" game. Kennedy gives readers a backstage pass to contracts, collaborations, publishing, paparazzi, the club/party circuit, commercialism, and marketing.

Even more entertaining than the love/hate story between main characters Mimi and Lamont are the fun and titillating side stories of Vanessa--a washed up supermodel just looking for her next magazine photo caption; Country D--a wannabe hit maker and shot caller; and the story of Lena--who surprisingly reminds us of Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie--living off of daddy's money, and famous for just being famous.

As other reviewers have commented, you could spend the entire book trying to guess which characters are parodying real artists and industry moguls, but don't let it spoil your reading pleasure. However, I will say that upon getting midway through Mimi's hip hop makeover and "revamping," I immediately thought about now celebrated rock artist Pink. Pink readily admits that she never wanted to record an R&B/hip hop CD for her first album, but was forced to by her label until she broke free. The parallel between Mimi and Pink (or even Ashanti or Mariah) is interesting.

Unlike other urban fiction authors, whose books are regaled as "urban classics," Kennedy is able to capture the language and rhetoric of the hip hop community without overdoing it or making the book more "ghetto" than it needs to be, for lack of a better term. Her writing is eloquent and sophisticated, yet the storyline and dialogue is still "gully" and "gritty" enough to keep even the hardest hip hop head enthralled.

I'm doing some summer reading in order to prepare next year's curriculum for my high school urban literature and hip hop course, and this book is definitely in the running for the reading list. However, it's a little too racy in some places because of the language and gratuitous sex scenes (including a threesome). However, Kennedy's chapters are titled after classic hip hop songs, which is excellent in terms of establishing theme and plot for each section--easy for students to identify and a teacher's dream for sparking discussion.

I would highly recommend this novel to add to your urban fiction collection, book reading club list, and for all adult readers 17 and up, who enjoy contemporary music and storytelling.

I'm looking forward to picking up Ms. Kennedy's next novel, as she has proven that she is quite a gifted author. Since Kennedy is a Sarah Lawrence College alumna--a liberal arts college well known for turning out fantastic writers (I once took a summer writing seminar there), I would expect nothing less than the brilliant work she produced in her debut piece.

5 out of 5 stars Very refreshing book.......2007-06-06

I loved this book I finished it in a few days. I was totally hooked to this one. Especially with the characters resembling to so many of rap and R&B artists we know of. This book was realistic and not too ghetto. Dont get me wrong there is nothing wrong with being ghetto(I speak from experience LOL) But sometimes you just arent in the mood for that and this book was just perfect. I would recommend this to anyone who is interested in the music industry you will not be disappointed!

3 out of 5 stars Not A Bad Read !.......2006-12-20

I got a chance to read this after hearing so much about it, and it was not a bad book. It was not the best thing I have read this year but it was good. Lamont, Mimi, Vanessa, Lena & the others are great characters. Some could have been more rounded out and define, but nonetheless it was a good book to pass some time with.

It does make you wonder which famous people Miss.Kennedy based some of the characters on.

Like I said not the greatest book I picked up this year, but it is a good read.

Book Description

Cool to uncool. Insider to mainstream. Black to white. How did "Bling Bling" move from one world to the other, seemingly overnight? Matthew Vescovo, master of the obvious and creator of Instructoart Lesson 1, hilariously connects the dots and takes us full circle from the raw underground rap origins of the phrase "Bling Bling," to its ultimate demise in the hands of unhip, suburban, housewives. This story of innovation, proliferation, regurgitation, commercialization, and bastardization, is based on Vescovo's highly popular animated short for MTV. Appropriately written in verse, it illustrates a common theme in contemporary culture--that of black culture carving out ownership of something exclusively its own . . . and other groups copying and abusing that thing until it has lost its originality. With sharp humor and wit, amusing comic-style illustrations, and an historical truth that resonates with its audience as it probes deeper issues, this book performs an autopsy on the term "Bling Bling," and then memorializes its death to the world.

4 out of 5 stars A Good Read.......2006-07-29

A well written story with good character development. Jane Porter allows the readers to get to know the characters, and both are likable and their actions/reactions believable. There really wasn't too much romance in it. I thought it was weird it is being sold under the guise of a Harlequin pocketbook ... it almost felt like the love story was secondary to what was actually happening in the book. Nevertheless, I enjoyed it.

5 out of 5 stars :0).......2006-06-20

FIRST OFF wasn't Gabby the cutiess thing, LOVE the story, EXCELLENT story telling. I JUST STARTED TO READ JANE PORTER and she has talent alot of it i like her novels...

Both the characters have a great chemistry and what it come down to is that they both love that little girl....

5 out of 5 stars Powerful story. It made my heart twist........2006-04-21

As always, Jane Porter takes her readers to the most beautiful places, this time it was Montecarlo.

Samantha is a beautiful woman that has lived through many difficult situations. The most dramatic of all loosing unexpectedly the people she had loved the most. For the sake of a child, she got married by convenience to Johann and he turned out to be the most terrible gambler who even dared to wager his wife and daughter!

Unbeknownst to us, Christiano shares a special relationship with Gaby, but he is showing a lot of interest towards Samantha.

Wait and see the change of direction in this story and please be ready to read the most heart-wrenching drama typical of Mrs. Porter.
I strongly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Ingriguing and Powerful Love Story Set in Monte Carlo.......2006-02-26

From the very beginning the reader is intrigued by the handsome Christiano who has definitely set his sights on Samantha. As this story continues you can't help but be drawn to Sam and her lovely step-daughter Gabby. One feels sorry for both as they have been taken advantage of by Johann whom all believe to be Gabby's father.

Johann, the evil man that he is, wagers both Sam and Gabby in a card game in Monte Carlo and of course, looses. From there on, the storyline takes twists and turns and keeps the reader on the edge of her seat.

This is just another example of how Jane Porter takes her readers to beautiful countries and entertains her readers with a very powerful story.

Book Summary:

Sold in Monte Carlo: a beautiful English baroness!

Samantha van Bergen has been wagered and won by the highest bidder: dark and sexy Italian, Cristiano Bartolo.

Did he buy her to bed her?

Innocent Sam is scared Cristiano will seduce her! But she quickly finds out he has his own reason for wanting her - bedding her is just a bonus!

5 out of 5 stars Poignant yet sensual - Enthralling!.......2005-12-25

"TAKEN BY THE HIGHEST BIDDER is poignant yet sensual romance that stimulates the heart and enthralls the senses. Jane Porter has an unerringly beautiful talent for developing unique plots with deep drama that delve into the hearts of readers and leave a mark. Superbly written with detailed characterization and gripping emotional intensity, this romance is yet another reason why Jane Porter is one of the brightest stars on the Harlequin Presents horizon. Bravo, Ms. Porter!"

    Book Description

"About Time" serves as the definitive (albeit unofficial) guide to "Doctor Who" Seasons 18 to 21, the end of Tom Baker's time with the show, the whole of the Peter Davison era, and the introduction of Colin Baker as the Doctor.

Written by Lawrence Miles (Faction Paradox) and Tat Wood (SFX, TV Zone), About Time not only examines the usual continuity concerns (alien races, etc.) in bursting detail, but looks at how the political / social issues of the early 1980s affected the show's production. Essays in this volume include: "Why are there So Many Duplicates in the Universe?", "What is the Blinovitch Limitation Effect?", and "How Does Regeneration Work?"

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars The most comprehensive DOCTOR WHO episode guide around.......2007-03-19

This fifth volume (of a projected six) in the ABOUT TIME series covers seasons 18-21 of DOCTOR WHO, examining adventures of the fourth and fifth Doctors. In addition to production notes and an critique of each episodes, there are notes and essays on continuity and the series in a cultural context. While not as handy as a one volume guide, the ABOUT TIME series makes for a much more interesting read.

5 out of 5 stars Utterly Enjoyable - No Doctor Who fan should be without it.......2006-02-15

Since I don't see a detailed review of this here, I'll record a few of my thoughts.

I first saw Doctor Who on my local PBS station, probably around 1980. I have been a fan every since. In fact, when I got married it became a passion that my wife and I shared, and my 17-year-old son has enjoyed it for as long as he can remember. Currently, we only have those episodes of the original series that have been released on DVD here in the US.

This book reviews Doctor Who seasons 18-21. That covers the final season of the Fourth Doctor (tall, curly brown hair, long scarf), the entirety of the Fifth Doctor's work (medium build, thinning blond hair, wore a white suit with celery on the lapel), and the first story of the Sixth Doctor (tall, curly blond hair, wore an (almost?) painfully technicolor ensemble).

The About Time series notes when each Doctor Who story was first broadcast; the credited cast members (and who they were); the number of viewers for each episode of the story; how people are most likely to remember which one this is; and the cliffhanger moments ending each episode. More importantly, it covers the continuity of the series: revealed facts about the history and background of not only the Doctor and his companions, but of other significant recurring characters (not just allies, but villains as well); details about each planet, and each alien race, including the Time Lords themselves; and even a breakdown of important facts about the TARDIS. It also lays out what each story is really about, looking at the influence of the time in which the story was written, English culture, and other SF sources. It provides a critique (sometimes two!) of each story, and interesting behind-the-scenes tidbits. Finally, almost every story is accompanied by a detailed sidebar essay into the background of the show, attempts to resolve conflicting information given in the show, and ponderings into both physics and metaphysics.

It's a fascinating look at, into, behind, and through each story, where you may be presented with the real-world reason for an oddity alongside an analysis of how it can still all fit together in the context of the show.

I enjoyed this immensely. I rarely read something twice in quick succession, but I'm about to re-read this after only finishing it about six months ago, in anticipation of getting the next volume.

5 out of 5 stars Great Reference Work.......2006-02-11

Part of the epic About Time series, this book tries to be the definitive guide to all of Doctor Who. Unlike a lot of other guides, many of the stories are put in it's own cultural and social context, making for an interesting read. Recommended.

    4 out of 5 stars Hard-hitting. Profound. Scriptural. Convicting........2007-03-30

"I am crucified with Christ, nevertheless I live and yet not I, but Christ who lives within me..." Gal 2:20

Gene Edwards reveals the good work of God in a crucified life. Yieldedness, surrender, and forgiveness. In fact, not learning the lesson of forgiveness is tantamount to smashing the face of your spiritual clock; we will go no further with God. Our progress is stopped.

However, on the other side of hurt, humiliation and harm of a "personal crucifixion" lies a closer walk with the Lord: a walk of profound peace, of deep assurance, and abiding love where the world, at last, loses its surly grip on our lives.

We think it strange for a loving father wanting, even orchestrating, our hurt and I'm not convinced I agree with Edwards on that point. I don't believe the Father uses disease, poverty, lies or other weapons of the evil one to destroy his children. In fact, they have been given authority over all the power of th enemy. Rather, God is looking for his children to crucify themselves, from the inside out: to come to a place of yieldedness, surrender and trust upon him alone.

However, one thing is certain, the world hated the Lord. Falsely accused him, slandered him, humiliated, tortured and brutally murdered him. Can His followers and disciples expect anything less?

"Exquisite Agony" does a masterful job of answering the question: "How would love respond?"

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent book!.......2005-06-27

While I probably would not reccommend much of Gene Edwards' reading, this book is a rare and great exception. Edwards writes in an easy to understand style that captures the reader. This literally was a book I could not put down. I just read for hours soaking up what the author was saying.

While it is true that Edwards does not fully present how to deal with agony, especially that caused by Christians, this does not seem to be his point in writing the book. This work is a wonderful help in getting a right perspective before God. If you want a book on relating to other Christians or dealing with conflict, sure read another book. But if you want something to help you deal with pain inflicted by others on a personal level, this is the book(other than the Bible, of course). Edwards helps us to see that God is behind our suffering, while not being the author of sin (that is absurd!). In his winsome style Edwards manages to use only one passage from Scripture (I think), but beautifully combines Scripture's teaching on the subject (see Romans 8:28 and Acts 4:27-28). Add this book to your library and buy it to minister to those hurting. It gives great perspective to life in general and gloriously displays the sovereignty of God.

1 out of 5 stars Look for Answers and Relief Elsewhere.......2005-03-14

There was nothing exquisite about this book but it was true agony to read. The book was short on answers and long on the author's unbibical opinion (in the entire text, the author refers to one, perhaps, two scriptures; moreover, the scripture(s) provided failed to support the author's one sided view of why Christians should be grateful to experience suffering). Unnfortunately, this book will do more harm than good for many Christians who are seeking true answers and relief from the spiritual damage done by some churches and other Christians. There are plenty of good books on the market that truly address this important topic. This is definitely not one of them. For a more spiritual, scholarly, and thought provoking view on the issue of suffering, I strongly recommend two books by Gregory Boyd: God at War and Satan and the Problem of Evil. Christians need valid and discerning spiritual answers to this crucial issue which can wreck one's faith and walk with God and not glib opinions.

1 out of 5 stars Why would I worship God if He is the author of evil?.......2004-09-19

Gene Edwards' description of God is very disturbing. God is not the originator of evil. Jesus' purpose for his crucifixion does not equal the "purpose" of our trials. Edwards never addresses the issue of dealing with the Christian who has wronged another person. Apparently they are not held responsible nor are there consequences for their actions. Edwards' theory is weak and is based on his own opinions and not based on sound biblical principles. This book will do more harm than good for those who are seeking answers for the hurt they have experienced.

5 out of 5 stars Two prominent themes.......2002-07-25

Gene Edwards does not allow for the typical "feel sorry" posture of those being persecuted. Instead he points out that a sovereign God is behind every event in the believer's life. As a result, there are two predominate themes running the gamut of life's less than savory experiences. First, in the shadow of every crucifixion is a loving God who loves us, knows about our pain and trusts us to engage the crucifixion in a way that honors Him. Second, if crufixion is resisted, it is merely punitive; if surrendered to, crucifixion leads to resurrection. Most want to transfer the pain or blame someone else. Edwards calls the believer to "know Him and the power of His resurrection and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death." Surrender comes out of obedience, not out of some desire to be martyred. Only here do we learn to see from God's perspective.

    Book Description

“Love seems to be the balance pole. Too little and your load shifts precariously one way, too much and it swings the other.”

Love Songs is a unique collection of short works. It was intended to be a concert of sweet old love songs to ease the soul. Instead the pieces are truer to the agony of blues. Some are amusing-some abrasive-some tragic. And all are thought provoking cautionary tales.

Death of a Mordot, the crowning novella, illustrates the fickle nature of gods and the inability of the inhabitants of that world to feel the compassion needed to survive. It is a fantasy romance of diversity, tolerance and faith, all that good stuff we could use in our world where our gods, hard cash and cruel power, are just as fickle and even more dangerous.

This is a book to be read curled up in a cozy place with your favorite comfort food—or on the subway on your way to fight dragons. Better yet, if you are a dragon, on a hillside on your way to fight men.

“A superb collection…Robertson really tells it like it is! This is a MUST READ!”

"Food is about agriculture, about ecology, about man's relationship with nature ... about nation-building, cultural struggles, friends and enemies ... and at times, even about sex." Thus Mark Kurlansky, author of the award-winning Cod and Salt, introduces Choice Cuts, his anthology of food writing throughout history. Kurlansky has cast his net very wide and presents a legion of food writers on every possible culinary subject.

The usual suspects are here, sometimes in triplicate: Brilliat Savarin on gourmets, female food-love, and how to gain weight; M.F.K. Fisher on bachelor cooking, the dislike of cabbage, and dinner at France's famed Monsieur Paul's in the 1940s; Elizabeth David on the folly of the garlic press, the glories of toast, and English pizza. But Kurlansky's trail starts much earlier with Plato on cooking (food as a branch of medicine, a notion shared by many modern advertisers), Heroditus on Egyptian dining, and, resoundingly, Mencius, a student of Confucius who, in the third century B.C., implored Chinese leaders to observe saner food and environmental policies.

There is a great deal to digest here, but readers can take small bites at their leisure. Enjoyed in this way, the book provides an endlessly fascinating glimpse of humankind's second--or is it the first?--greatest pleasure. --Arthur Boehm

    4 out of 5 stars A Bedside Stack.......2007-03-12

I like to have a small stack of books on my nightstand that I can just pick up and read before sleep that have nothing whatsoever to do with my current daytime/evening reading. The best candidates for that small stack are poetry, short stories and essays and so I have been happy to have Mark Kurlansky's "Choice Cuts" around for that style of casual, drifting away reading. I know from Kurlansky's "Cod" and "Salt" that he's a real bloodhound researcher so I imagine he comes across all kinds of material that catches his attention but doesn't suit his purpose at hand. The book has interesting Contents pages but I rarely use them, I just open the book at random and see where it takes me; it's all interesting to me. For instance Von Rumohr's, "Emotions to be Avoided While Eating" (p.126), Hooker, "On Icelandic Food"(p.67), ALL of Marjorie Rawlings, James Beard on "Radishes" (p.161) and many more delight me. In fact the whole book sooner or later. There are so many books with so many different purposes and uses. This one is just a little buddy to have around to amuse, to entertain and to delight, to accompany me into dreams. Then all of a sudden, too late at night, I'm stirring up a batch of Marjorie Rawlings, "Hush Puppies" (p. 255) to eat with blackberry jam and "Hot Chocolate", James Beard (p.341).

4 out of 5 stars An uneven collection of bathroom reading for foodies.......2006-09-26

If I were Kurlansky's publisher, I would have liked his book pitch, too: pull together several short essays of food writing into a single book. Kurlansky is an excellent author -- I've read a few of his other books and liked 'em quite well -- but this one doesn't quite make it.

When an essay works, it's a great sampler for the author's work -- which may not be a "foodie" writer. You'd expect to find Lucullus, but not Herodotus (Kurlansky includes a page from The Persian Wars, fifth century BC, with Herodotus' comments on Egyptian dining). I've read _of_ AJ Liebling more than I've read him, but I loved the four pages reproduced here about dining with his parents at Restaurant Maillabuau in Paris, followed immediately by MFK Fisher on Monsieur Paul's.

The book has thirty chapters which group the material by topic: ethnicity, such as The Americans, or food items, such as the Mystery of Eggs. A section on seasoning includes Pliny the Elder on Thyme, the Talmud on Garlic, Platina on Basil and Saffron, Karl Friedrich von Rumohr on Sorrel, and The Aobo Tu on Salt Making.

On the positive side, each of the essays is very short. Most are 2-3 pages, and few are more than 5, making them suitable to enjoy in the john (and I do mean that in a nice way). That's also a negative, however, because by the time you've gotten into an essay (or poem or song lyrics -- Kurlansky mixes 'em up), and figured out whether this one is meant to be funny, or sensual, or instructive, or whatever... it's over. When something doesn't work for me -- and it could be a matter of mood -- I find that I flip forward until I find another essay that attracts. Perhaps that's a strength, too, because there's always something to get my interest. But mostly I'm aware of how much of the book I'm skipping.

The uneven nature of the collection makes it hard for me to recommend this book without reservation. I like it; I don't love it.

4 out of 5 stars Entertaining Reading for Foodies.......2003-09-03

With Mark Kurlansky's reputation as one of the best food writers today, it was only a matter of time before a collection of some of his selections of good food writing came together. "Choice Cuts" is entertaining reading, especially for those who are interested in the history of eating and food. There are few recipes in this book, but this collection is more of a book that you sit down with a cup of coffee or tea after you've finished the dishes.

        Book Description

1988 marked the one hundredth anniversary of Louis Icart's birth. There were no parades of large celebrations, but Louis and his wife, Fanny, would certainly have been grateful at the great resurgence of interest in his artwork. This newly expanded book now includes over 500 different etchings, painstakingly acquired and photographed. Particular attention has been given to the early years (1911-1924), when Icart was a relatively unknown artist and his edition sizes were small. With few exceptions, the book contains large, full color illustrations which give the reader a true representation of the full-size etchings. The authors clarify some of the existing confusion surrounding Icart's work, explaining the variations in his signature, the use of the "Windmill" seal and other seals, and the myriad of copyright notations found on his etchings. The etchings have been carefully measured and dated. This is a great addition to the Icart legacy., 500 color illus., 9" x 12", Index

I started collected Icart sketches a few years ago. This book is FABULOUS. It breaks down his work by periods. The pages are full of his sketches / year created / little tid bits regarding them. The reproduced works are full color (though I love love love the black and white sketches) and just beautiful. At the end of the book is a short glimpse of other artists whose work was during the same time, making comparison easy.

If you like Icart -- this book is a HAVE TO HAVE!

5 out of 5 stars Louis Icart, the complete Etchings........2000-04-09

Anyone remotely interested in the work of French artist and illustrator Louis Icart, will be impressed by the comprehensive presentation of his etchings. The colour printing is excellent, and in chronological order one can see the development of his career, his charming females in various fashion garments of the period, and also nude, curiously rival the work of Australian artist Norman Lindsay, although Linday's nudes are of the buxom variety, and perhaps more agressive than sleek French models whom Icart make so decorative. Icart is firmly in the tradition of great French Art, after painters like Boucher and Watteau. My only small regret there was not more text about Icart, but this is a book of pictures and as such a recommended reference work.

This holiday gift book provides readers with insight into celebrating Christmas on Nantucket Island off the coast of Massachusetts. The two centuries old houses look terrific as they are made festive for the Yuletide season. The numerous color photos by Jeffrey Allen enable the reader to see first hand why this is a popular sight during Christmas, almost as much as it is a summer getaway. Author Leslie Linsley provides a warm travelogue as she escorts her readers on a tour of the homes, the ships, the shops, all lit up for the season to be jolly. Ms. Linsley also provides the audience with arts and crafts tips that include designs using greenery, fruits and flowers. Special recipes round out this delightful charmer. Perhaps the only thing missing is the lack of the owners of these delightful homes, shops, and ships as smiling uplifting faces would enhance the insightful descriptions and wonderful photography.

As a ardent fan of Nantucket "style" and history, I can't be more delighted that the author has compiled a book devoted to the charms of a Nantucket Christmas! The copy and beautiful color photographs share all the beauty and uniqueness of the special holiday season on this "faraway" isle. In addition to sharing the special ambiance that is Nantucket, creative ideas abound in this book for bringing a bit of a Nantucket holiday to your own home. Thank you, Leslie Linsley, for a book I will treasure for many years to come!!

              Book Description

Discovering Design reflects the growing recognition that the design of the everyday world deserves attention not only as a professional practice but as a subject of social, cultural, and philosophic investigation. Victor Margolin, cofounder and an editor of the journal Design Issues, and Richard Buchanan, also an editor of the journal, bring together eleven essays by scholars in fields ranging from psychology, sociology, and political theory to technology studies, rhetoric, and philosophy. The essayists share the editors' concern, first made clear in Margolin's Design Discourse: History, Theory, Criticism, with the the development of design studies as a field of interdisciplinary research.

The contributors (Gianfranco Zaccai, Albert Borgmann, Richard Buchanan, Augusto Morello, Tufan Orel, Nigel Cross, Victor Margolin, Langdon Winner, Carl Mitcham, Tony Fry, and Ezio Manzini) focus on three broad themes that form a sequence of fundamental issues: how to shape design as a subject matter, how to distinguish the activity of designing in the complex world of action, and how to address the basic questions of value and responsibility that persistently arise in the discussion and practice of design. The editors' introduction provides a useful overview of these questions and offers a multidisciplinary framework for design studies. The essays discuss such topics as the relation of aesthetics to technology, the place of design in social action, the role of the consumer in design decisions, and the need for ethical practice in contemporary design. Manzini's concluding essay shows how the issue of ethics should connect responsible behavior to decisions made every day in the manufacture of objects.

This book is really useful, as it provides an easy reference to Harrison Ford's films and allows the reader to find the ones that are worth watching.

Besides the blurbs of reviews and general information on the movies, however, this book is made really interesting (and at times really funny too) because of the stories about the production experience for each of the movies that it includes as well. Seriously, it is hard to imagine, when viewing the finished products, the disasterous, strange, and hysterical events that occurred during the making of some of the films.

So, if you are a fan of Harrison Ford or are just a big movie fan who is especially interested in behind-the-scenes type information, this book is highly recommended. If you don't care for either of the above things, why are you looking here anyhow?

                      Book Description

As the Hero of STAR WARS and INDIANA JONES with his legendary hat and whip, Harrison Ford is just an ordinary man in the street that anyone can identify with. HF is certainly no poser; he leads a quiet life (despite a succession of wives, which is about par for the course), and his seductive charm eminates from his simplicity and intelligence. The actor is a genius (the best paid actor in Hollywood), spilling over with ideas during his film shoots. A perceptive biography from a true fan moved by both the man and the actor....who will soon be back on the screen as Indiana Jones!

Before I read this book, I thought Harrison Ford was a selfish and air-headed movie star. It proved me wrong. I learned about his struggle through his childhood, his rise to fame and how he is a perfectionist, finding that just by being myself, I have lots in common with the man who created wonderful heroes such as Indiana Jones, Han Solo and Jack Ryan, to name a few. He is selfless and modest, a condition hard to find in a movie star.
So if Mr. Harrison is reading this-keep making great movies, sir, and I'll keep watching and rooting for you all the way!

It's alright that the author didn't speak with Ford while writing and researching this unathorized biography. Often the person being written about can clarify something that isn't clear. Often, the person being written about can put a positive spin on some event in an attempt to make themself look better. This is a good book about the humble actor that looked at his pre-success years, going back to his mid-west roots, marriage, and the ups-and-downs of his experience in the film industry, which was covered a lot. How did Harry get that scar?....the answers lies within these pages. One interesting note is the story of a young producer, writer and director who made a movie in the 70s. At the screening, many movie moguls approached the young creator and told him bluntly that his film would be a flop, no one would see it, and his career may be in jeopardy after producing such a poor piece of work. The name of the movie was......."Star Wars." The man was George Lucas.

The are a couple things to note when reading this book. First, is that it is unauthorized which doesn't mean that the author does not have to "sugarcoat" Harrison Ford. Sounds like a great book. Second is that the book is unauthorized...conversely, the author does not seem to have spoken with Harrison Ford.

Unlike other unauthorized biographies, this book doesn't make a big production of it. The author is not trying to sell this book on scandal. The sell is on the picture behind what you usually hear or read. From going through the notes, the author has interviewed quite a few people and has gone through a lot of background information to create this.

The book reads easily, and I don't find myself questioning the author. All his statements about Harrison Ford, like his being a perfectionist, follows from the supporting evidence. The author also does not jump around. It all flows logically.

Harrison Ford is an American movie icon. This book allows you to look at the experiences and attitudes which got him there. If you are a fan of Harrison Ford, then I would suggest you take a deep breath before reading. The author is not trying to make him into a saint.

Robert Abele profiles actor Harrison Ford's life to date in a detailed and thoroughly entertaining manner. Illustrated with 52 B&W photographs from throughout Ford's lifetime, and a timeline of his life and films through the years, this is a must have for any fan of Harrison Ford.

                            Book Description

Rugged actor Harrison Ford has been labeled one of the top 100 movie stars of all time, the sexiest man alive, the richest male actor, and the actor who has grossed more in the box office than any other in the history of film, yet he still has the appeal of an average guy, a hero to whom the common man can relate. He has worked in more than 40 films, as well as narration, documentaries, award shows, tributes, and television appearances, winning more than two-dozen awards, including the Lifetime Achievement award in 2000. This biographical examination thoroughly covers his life and career, concentrating most heavily on his films.

The work begins with Ford's early life: his birth in 1942, early stage work, and his first film role (uncredited in 1966's Dead Heat on a Merry-Go-Round). Throughout, significant events in Ford's personal life are woven into the examination of his career. The main body of the work deals with his efforts in the film industry, covering in great detail such movies as American Graffiti, the Star Wars movies, Heroes, The Frisco Kid, Hanover Street, Blade Runner, Regarding Henry, The Fugitive, Sabrina, Air Force One, and K-19, concluding with the Indiana Jones movie slated for 2006. Over 30 films are closely examined, from their inceptions, writing, casting, sets, shooting schedules, stunts, Ford's workouts, filming obstacles, clashes of personality, the films' openings, box-office earnings, controversies, and reviews. Each film's discussion is bolstered by many quotes from crew and cast, including Ford, and often includes intimate anecdotes. The work also mentions Ford's efforts for conservation (and honors: species of ant and of spider have been named after him), love of flying and carpentry, and present roles as boyfriend to Calista Flockhart and loving grandfather. The work is illustrated with a wide range of stills and concludes with a bibliography and filmography.

5 out of 5 stars The Definitive Filmography.......2005-12-17

Just the kind of book I was looking for. Being a huge fan of Harrison Ford films I wanted to read something to the point - the making of his movies. This is precisely what you get from Brad Duke's extremely well researched and complete book. Having this book along with my Netflix subsciption and I was in Harrison Ford film school. A book like this can add so much enjoyment to the movie watching experience. I would love to see more books exactely like this one for other great actors such as Gary Cooper, Jimmy Stewart, John Wayne, Clint Eastwood, or any other you care to name. Duke's style is perfect for film fans who want to aquire a deeper knowledge of the films and actors they admire without the celebrity hoopla and nonsense and on the other hand without the over the top intellectualism of much film criticism that stuffs the shelves of most book stores. In conclusion, an excellent read and a very useful reference for the work of one of the finest actors of the last 40 years. A must for all fans.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting book for Ford fans.......2005-08-08

This is truly very well documented book about Ford's life and his films. The author goes into great detail about his films (maybe too much detail) and you will learn something new about Ford and his films. That is a promise. I thought I knew almost all there is to know about man - I was mistaken. But I have two complaints. First is the fact that all the photos in the book are in black and white. Not a big issue but I would have liked to see some color photos. And the second and more important is that if you are not a true 100% fan of Harrison Ford, the author's method may get boring. Although an excellent book, the author doesn't use much variety. Each chapter is filled with the same kind of information. Why Ford accepted the role, how the director got involed, how the script got wriiten, some technical element and the location, what Ford thought of the project, how it was received by critics and how much money it made. Finally we have Ford's view on the project. And although great for us Ford fans, it will certainly be a bit boring for the average reader midway through the book. But nevertheless this is a very good book for Ford fans and the best thing about this book is that it tells much more about Ford and his views than the previous books about Ford. There are more Ford quotes than in previous books. Usually it is mainly what Ford's co-worker and old school friend said about him. This is more what Ford has said and those closest to him. Therefore I recommend this book for everybody who are interesting in books about films/actors but warn the average reader that it may get tiresome midway through the book.

5 out of 5 stars Very, Very Informative Look at One of the Greatest...........2005-06-24

Despite it being a tad pricey, this book is incredibly well researched - and if you're a true Ford fan - well worth the price. It truly reads like a textbook in that there's no fluff to get in the way of the facts. Mr. Duke tells the story of Ford's life chronologically and goes into - dare I say, graphic - detail into the making of his films.
Just when you thought you knew everything about the legend, it's time to think again...

5 out of 5 stars Definitive Harrison Ford Filmography.......2005-04-27

'Harrison Ford: The Films' is infinitely detailed and exhaustingly researched in a way that other books simply are not. Fans and film students will find this to be a substantive and well written source for information on both Mr. Ford himself, and the trials and tribulations of film making. Moreover, Mr. Duke's work is absorbing and entertaining - not merely a bland list of the actor's acomplishments, but a witty and reverant discussion of Mr. Ford's career and life. The author graciously omits the cheap "gossip" that so often finds its way into such works, while including a well rounded look at Mr. Ford's origins and personal achievements.

In short, this book is a MUST for any Ford fan or film buff!

5 out of 5 stars The most outstanding book about the most outstanding actor.......2005-03-10

Brad Duke's years of research, interviews and extensive travel have paid off in the biggest of ways in the form of 'Harrison Ford: The Films'. Duke's chronological peek at the stellar career of Harrison Ford is unarguably the most thorough, complete and compelling work that has ever come to the literary marketplace.
Commencing with Harrison's working class upbringing and intricately weaving it's way through years of legendary films, directors, actors, friends and business associates, 'Harrison Ford: The Films' could certainly be used as a textbook in a college course about Ford's life and career. This extraordinary book gives the reader a fly-on-the-wall look at the reclusive star's life, loves, personal passions, films and little-known philanthropic efforts. It is a rare feat when a Hollywood-themed book can manage to side-step gossip and innuendo and wind up with a true and accurate depiction of a man, an actor, a crazy business and the passion that fuels all three.
Utilizing little-known stories and interviews with industry big-wigs and insiders, the reader is "a-FORD-ED" with a rare glimpse of the movie industry and all it's workings and complications. Duke further encourages the reader with the use of easy-to-understand terminology and funny stories that, some of which, until now, have not been committed to print. You will certainly find this an easy read and an extremely insightful and funny look at the world's most popular movie star. Starting with Harrison's earliest work in television, the book faithfully chronicals the trials, tribulations and triumphs in such areas as co-stars, film budgets, script problems, studio clashes, risky stunt work and the toll that his work has taken on Mr. Ford himself.
I bought the book when it first came out and did not put it down until I was finished reading it. I found it poignant, interesting, insightful and absolutely charming. I'm sure you will too.
