A nice follow up........2007-09-06
J.A Konrath is one of my favorite new authors. His writing style is fast and fun, even when he is describing horrible instances. The books are fast paced, and are great page turners. The characters are very well written, and the story lines are compelling. I enjoyed getting to know the characters deeper, that were first introduced in the first book of the series "Whiskey Sour." If you like mystery/thriller/cop fiction you will enjoy this series.
A new star in the galaxcy........2007-07-21
While Patterson is my all time favorite mystery writer, I loved reading Konrath because his stories revolved in the Chicago area where I recognize all the nooks and cranies he writes about. That adds even more to the story for me since I'm from the area.
If you're looking for a humorous detective story this book is a winner.......2007-01-29
This is the first Jack Daniels mystery that I read and I loved it.
The dialogue between Jack Daniels and her partner Herb is a scream. Herb and Jack are great friends and never let Herb's incessant supplier of donuts and mexican food get between them. This is a rollicking ride as they hunt a twisted killer and finally nab the bad guy.
A fun read with a bit of twisted psychopathy thrown in. Fans of Jack Kerley and Janet Evanovich will love this murder mystery
Too much gore for me - sorry!.......2006-09-01
I really enjoyed Whisky Sour, the first story about "Jack" Daniels, a female police officer. I liked her strong character, the witty writing, and the characters in general. In many ways it struck em as a female "Spenser" character. The only issue I had was the sometimes extreme, nasty gore in it. I struggled through that because the rest of the story was so enjoyable.
I had really hoped that Bloody Mary would provide the same great characters and environment, and tone the gore down. Unfortunately, this was not to be. If anything, the gore level was cranked up here. Now we have a sadistic psychopath who enjoys torturing his victims for days, if possible, with as gory a result as humanly possible. He literally covers the walls with plastic to make the cleanup of blood and body bits easier. It gets overly disgusting.
That's not to say I didn't enjoy the rest of the book! I love the writing style. I love the one-liners and the sharpness of the characters. I love how generally strong Daniels is - although she does slip quite a lot here, for some reason becoming more like a "stereotypical female in a cop job" than she had in the first book. I liked the fact that her mom, a retired cop, was also still sharp, active and had a sex life.
The mid-life crisis, the dealing-with-an-aging-parent, and many other side stories were integrated in an interesting, although sometimes over the top, manner. For someone who spends her life evaluating peoples' discussions and seeking for meaning in a questioning, Daniels seems blissfully clueless about the importance of communication in her own life. So be it, some people are like that.
In the end, though, the gore levels are just too much for me. A lot of it was in there just for gross-out factor and had little real plot meaning. Even if a serious motivation was laid out, it might help - but there wasn't. It was more of a "this incredibly, completely insane person has landed in Daniels' life, so let's have fun with the idea." Somehow Daniels personally seems to attract more complete psychopaths in 2 years than most states see in a 50 year period.
So I'm afraid that for me, personally, I can't read any more of these. There are tons of other writers out there who give me the same level of enjoyability without the detailed body ripping apart. If someone wants to contact me should future books tone down the gore level, I'd be quite happy!
Another Winner!.......2006-08-13
As soon as I finished the first book in this series, Whiskey Sour, I snapped up the next one, Bloody Mary. J.A. Konrath brings the same mix of humor, suspense, character and plot to this sequel that made the first one impossible to put down, and I tore through this one equally quickly.
Again we are off with a bang as Jack has to solve the mystery of an extra pair of limbs that turn up in the morgue, handcuffed together...with her own handcuffs! Signs quickly point to a killer who has killed before and will again, and who seems to be close to the police department, and possibly a member of the police himself.
The mystery aspect was somewhat less believable, resting on the assumption that the killer is almost animalistically out of control in his killing rage and yet able to maintain his cover on a day to day basis, and able to form an alliance with a helper to boot. It's easier to see "who dunnit" almost from the start, but the plot takes some unexpected twists in the second half of the book. The character development continues as both Jack and her co-stars gain more depth and background, and Jack faces both a career crisis and a romantic dilemma (that is perhaps a bit too easily resolved).
I continue to like this series very much and look forward to another installment, but I do hope the author is able to move away from the "Jack is personally targetted by a crazed killer" theme--once worked well, twice was a stretch I was willing to make with the author because the rest of the book was so good, but three or more times would become rather ridiculous! Still I look forward to more good things from Jack and J.A. Konrath.

Off The Record is off the hook!.......2006-10-18
I love this book! I have also read Jennifer O'Connell's other books, and those are great books too. Off The Record is my favorite though. I love how it takes place in Chicago, just 90 minutes south from my home town. Jane and her friends are in the same part of life that my friends and I are in. We have careers, husbands, and kids. This made the characters easy to identify with. Besides, what girl hasn't wanted a rock song written about her especially if the singer is hot. This is a must read if you're a fan of chic lit!
Good.......2006-02-14
You probably won't like this book if you're looking for: a 20-something bundle of insecurities; an assistant with a bad boss; a woman who obsesses about shoe shopping and martinis. You WILL like this book if you're looking for: a real character with issues who can be ironic and unsure at the same time; a lawyer who's career is going places, she just has to decide where; a friend whose friends aren't bed-hopping but still manage to be funny, fun and provide a kick in the pants when needed. I liked this book, the characters, and the storylines, they kept me interested without becoming typical over the top 'girl in the city' stuff.
A lyrical story.......2006-02-07
Even if you weren't a huge Bon Jovi fan or ever dreamed of having some guy on stage pick you out of a crowd, you will love this book. Jane is an unlikely heroine who can be an uptight lawyer one minute and then an insecure 16 year old the next. But this book isn't all about rock stars and fame, Jane has other more serious things going on in her life that keep this from being a one-note story, mainly the fact that she's still coming to terms with her father's death and her upcoming promotion to partner in her law firm. This book has you laughing one minute and thoughtful the next. It was a great mix that kept the story rolling. A side note, as a huge music fan, I feel compelled to point out that Bon Jovi, Poison, Warrant and Great White were all in the top 40 in 1989 : as a college freshman in 1989, I know this. Another reason why I probably liked this book.
867-5309... I mean, 245.......2006-02-07
Did you ever wonder about the true identity of Jenny, whose phone number 867-5309 was immortalized in an early 1980's pop song, by the never-heard-from-again Tommy Tutone? (Apparently a lot of people did - I once read that the phone company was bombarded by calls to this number while the song was at the top of the Billboard charts). That's the idea that Jennifer O'Connell explores in "Off The Record".
Jane Marlow is an uptight, overachieving attorney, content with her life as long as no one tries to move her sofa pillows from their precise 45 degree angles or scuff her sensible shoes. She's a slightly obsessive compulsive workaholic, who some - okay, many - people might describe as boring. So it's a shock to everyone who knows her when former number one charting pop artist Teddy Rock reveals in a TV interview that his 1989 mega-hit "Janey 245" was written about HER. It seems that one-hit wonder Teddy Rock was once Theo Brockford, the quiet kid in Jane's neighborhood who moved away when they were in junior high. She barely knew him and hasn't thought of him in years, but she apparently made a lasting impression on him.
Fascinated to think that she could have been the inspiration for Teddy's sexy and sassy Janey, Jane warily goes along with her opportunistic brother's scheme to cash in on her newfound notoriety. When Andy manages to contact Teddy's publicist, the rock star's "people" eagerly jump on the chance to reunite their client with his muse, hoping to drum up publicity for his soon to be released comeback record. Before she knows what hit her, Jane is caught up in a whirlwind of media frenzy, as everyone wants to get a look at "Janey". Overwhelmed at first, Jane finds herself enjoying the attention, as well as Teddy's genuine attraction to her (although they become good friends, she herself is drawn more to a fellow attorney at her law firm). She begins exploring her "inner Janey", daring herself to become more like the feisty heroine of the song. "What would Janey do?" becomes her mantra, and she begins to shed her inhibitions and enjoy a little unpredictability in her life. But just as she is riding high on her newfound fame, Teddy reveals the full truth about his inspiration for the song...
While this was an entertaining read with a unique plot, I can't rank it quite as high as my fellow reviewers. The character development (other than that of Jane) is somewhat lacking. The author introduces a number of interesting supporting players (such as Jane's client Kitty and family friend/father figure Sam) but doesn't really go anywhere with them. Even Teddy is not very dimensional. I'd have liked more of his back story, and as short as this novel is (about 240 pages), it kind of felt like the author was pressed for a deadline and didn't flesh out the story as much as she could have.
Also, while this is a bit nitpicky, I was bothered by the fact that Teddy Rock scored his one hit in 1989, the heyday of such teenyboppers as New Kids On The Block, Debbie Gibson, and Tiffany, at the age of 18. Logically, that would have lumped him in the same category as those other teen artists, and his fan base would have been the same as theirs - primarily young teenage girls, not college students, making it far less likely that "Janey 245" would have been as significant to all of Jane's friends and co-workers as it was. Again, this is a nitpick, and probably wouldn't bother anyone other than a rabid music fan. Overall, a fun light read, good for a Sunday afternoon or a day at the beach.
An entertaining book!.......2006-01-23
Jennifer O'Connell's "Off the Record," centered around Jane, an attorney in a Chicago law firm whose life was revolved around her work. She was seen as the boring Jane, who did not know how to have fun and was perceived as an incredibly serious person. Even her out of state co-worker, Drew, seemed to have her all figured out. Out of the blue, her brother Andy told Jane that she could be the Janey in the hit single "Janey 245" by the once popular Teddy Rock. "Janey 245" was a big hit in the late 1980s, in which Teddy Rock wrote about this hot girl whom he so desired. Teddy Rock used to live across the street from her but Jane had not much recollection of him. Jane's life became out of control when Andy made it known to the public that she was indeed The "Janey 245."
This was quite an entertaining book. The characters were well-developed and the plot was actually quite engaging. It was also fast-paced and contained many funny moments. This was definitely a better than average book in this genre.

Book Description
How far will they go to get what they want?
Renee Rose was assigned to the newest judge in the 29th Judicial Circuit. Surrounded by murderers, rapists, and thieves (who are almost never in a good mood), at the whim of cranky judges, obnoxious attorneys and baton happy guards, being a court reporter is not your average job. At forty-four, still single ten years after the divorce, still having fuzzy thoughts about her ex-husband even though she can't stand him, Renee leans hard on black humor to get through her day.
In court she's literally surrounded by armed guards, but it isn't such a stretch to think a felon might follow her home one day. And now she has a problem. A gorgeous but scary guy brought three dozen roses to her apartment, someone left money on her car, and somebody scared her friend so badly that she left town. All of this was weird but rather harmless, until Renee found a dead dog nailed to her front door.
Somebody wants something. But what?

Funny and true.......2004-03-22
This book captures the funny part of the life of a court reporter. Jody puts humor in her stories and it was a pleasure to read. I read the book in two days. She puts together the different characters in the court reporting agency in a comical way. This agency sounds like mine. The characters made me laugh.
Looking forward to her next book.
Thanks

I liked this book. The courtroom scenes are very real. I liked her character's sense of humor and I like the fact that she's not 23 and gorgeous, she's everyday like me but she has a quick wit and is still chasing men.
Clever, edgy, funny.......2002-06-20
Enjoyable, funny, a quick read. Once I started, I didn't want to put it down. I like these characters. I hope this author writes a series.

The Invisible World John O'Donohue
The ancient Celts sensed an "invisible world" around them - the great unknown from which they came and the source of eternal wonder in their lives. Through prayer, O'Donohue teaches, we may enter directly into this secret immensity and escape the psychological prisons we create for ourselves. With prayers, blessings, poetry, and teachings.
Customer Reviews:
Spiritual Magic.......2000-04-07
This audio book by John O'Donohue takes us on an inspirational, and for me an unforgetable journey, into the heart of who we are. O'Donohue's poetic style comes to life in this seminar and his voice reflects his passion and commitment to sharing Celtic wisdom with us all. O'Donohue has the ability to speak about our deep spiritual yearnings, using very simple language and some beautiful anecdotal examples, that we all can relate too. What I liked most about this book was the authors experience and examples of Prayer. His relating of Prayer and its effect on the Invisible World, and on the people we pray for, made this writer yearn to pray. Another aspect of this book that gives great hope is O'Donohue's explanation of the prisons in which we put ourselves, and how we might free ourselves and renew our lives. While much of what is said is also in Eternal Echoes, another though provoking book from John O'Donahue. The beauty of 'The Invisible World' is the oral delivery ~ 'Eternal Echoes', on the other hand, can be difficult for non-academic readers to plough through (although I found it a great read). If you are looking for further motivation along your spiritual path, you will not be disappointed with this audio book.Your journey toward your divine destiny will be enhanced a hundred fold.

Customer Reviews:
Unusual Format, good culinary content, great pics.......2005-08-20
The three glossy, Golden Book styled Korean cookbooks by Noh Chin-hwa and Copyreader Shirley A. Dorow form a rather oddly titled collection of pretty good recipes covering the width and breadth of Korean cuisine. One really wishes these three volumes had been published as a single volume, especially as there is no index spanning the three volumes. These books are entitled `Healthful Korean Cooking, Meats & Poultry', `Low-Fat Korean Cooking Fish, shellfish & Vegetables', and `Traditional Korean Cooking, Snacks and Basic Side Dishes'.
Aside from the very non-European way of organizing these topics, the most difficult thing may be the mislabelling of various Korean techniques. Classic Korean barbecue is really a high heat fast cooking method, much more like grilling than smoke-based slow cooking barbecue. It's most distinguishing feature is that it is done on the tabletop on a grill very similar to the Japanese Hibachi. In other places, the name `broiling' is given to what is essentially another instance of grilling.
While I have eaten several meals at a Korean restaurant, I have never reviewed other books on Korean cuisine, so I can only judge this as if I were judging a book on French or Italian or Southern American cuisine.
One very dramatic feature of all three volumes is the fact that each and every recipe is accompanied with a series of very good color pictures illustrating the main steps in the procedure. This is in addition to a larger picture of the completed dish. Another very good aspect of the photographs in these books is that all the dishes are plated on similarly colored and shaped plates, so the essential difference from photo to photo is in the food and not in the crockery.
The photographer really gets a chance to do his stuff with the double page pics of typical table settings.
While it does me little good, I liked the fact that each dish is clearly named with an English name, a Korean name in English script, and the Korean name in Korean pictographs. For Korean speaking readers, I suspect this is a good thing.
The one thing I found most annoying about the way the recipes were written is in the fact that the list of ingredients is not in tabular form. That is, the amount and name of the first ingredient begins at the beginning of the first line, followed immediately by the amount and name of the second ingredient without a line break, if there is room remaining on the first line.
Ultimately, the most annoying thing about this collection is that the division of dishes between the volumes makes little sense to a Western cook, there is no combined index, and so much material in the introductions, glossaries, and table setting pics is duplicated in all three books.
And yet, until I review any more Korean cookbooks, these volumes' strengths outweigh its weaknesses if you are an amateur cook and really want to reproduce dishes from your local Korean eatery. I would prefer seeing a more general approach similar to the many excellent books on European cuisines such as Diane Kochilas' book on Greek food and Penelope Casas' early book on Spanish food.

A refreshing guide to Coca-Cola's adorable Polar Bears.......2000-12-09
As the widely-recognized ambassadors for Coca-Cola, Polar Bears occupy a special spot in my Coca-Cola collection. No doubt about it, these adorable bears and cubs make it all too easy to be smitten with the collector bug. Now I'm delighted to have a handsome hardcover book about these bears to add to my Coca-Cola treasures.
Thanks to this "family scrapbook" with colorful photos and general descriptions, I can now admire and covet the many Coca-Cola Polar Bears in every size, shape and variety. The authors even provided a list of resources that will come in handy. While I would have loved more technical details about how the TV ads were created and animated, overall I'm "beary" happy!

Not very global.......2002-12-22
The photos are beautiful, but I was disappointed in the narrow range of styles present in the book. Most of the pictures are of asian style with a little South American and India style thrown in. As far as I could tell, there were no pictures of tribal/african style, or other less-well represented styles in mainstream decorating books.
I gave the book as many stars as I did for the photos and for the authors at least trying to publish a more diversified book on style. I would have liked to give it more stars, but I was too disappointed in it.
great resource for creative world-travellers.......2000-10-27
This book is a really exciting read for people looking for elegant ways to display all the fabulous souvenirs they picked up on their world travels. At the very least, it really opens up your mind to new possibilities of decorating beyond the Pottery Barn/Crate & Barrel aesthetic...

Type in Motion: Innovations in Digital Graphics is a high-energy, brilliantly colored coffee-table book--and a serious exploration of the latest trends in type design in commercial and fine art as well.
The book is an intensely visual guide to the variety of type designs in today's media. It examines movies such as Prospero's Books and The Pillow Book, where beautiful calligraphy plays a large role, and movies such as Mission Impossible and Good Will Hunting, where the titles are produced with careful attention to typography. The writers also explore type design in commercials and documentaries. A variety of pieces they present were originally delivered on CD-ROM, Web site, video, book, or other medium--there's even a sculptural toy--and include interactive press kits, experimental design showcases, digital opera, interactive calendars, and scientific research on type.
Throughout, captions explain the design, interface, and animation of each project, and pictures illuminate the nature of each. If you're a serious artist who enjoys manipulating type in ever more creative ways, this book will serve as an inspiration for your own work. And even if you simply dabble in art and appreciate the lovely ways in which typography and script can deliver a message, Type in Motion will be a source of great reading and viewing pleasure for you. --Kathleen Caster
Book Description
Exploding, liquidizing, floating, mutating--the use of type today knows no boundaries. Words on paper have become pictures in themselves, rather than simply segments of sentences. In the popular mediums of television and film, designers today paint moving pictures with words.
Type in Motion features projects in video, film, mixed media, digital and event print that are thematically grouped into five sections by the way the kinetic type is used: its precursors; its narrative function; its message potential; its plastic form; and its possibilities for ambient, interactive environments. The work of internationally recognized design studios including Bruce Mau (Toronto), Jonathan Barnbrook (London), and the MIT Media Lab (Boston) are shown alongside the most daring student work from around the world.
A dynamic design in itself, Type in Motion will set the standard for the future of typography and design.
Customer Reviews:
Good addition to design knowledge.......2007-09-30
This is book is an addition to the motion design workflow where you can get to know how to use typography in your day-to-day work related to broadcast and motion graphics animation. It certainly has good tips if you want to improve upon the area of typography usage in animation.
Not at all useful........2006-11-29
Having seen Matt Woolman's "Moving Type", which is a great resource, I had hoped for similar and updated content in covering this design area. This is a very disappointing book as it seems it is a compendium of advertising for the motion design houses out there with very little to offer aside from screenshots of various projects. You are better off just visiting the websites of the companies covered for free with the added benefit of seeing QuickTimes of the TYPE IN MOTION.
Ok if for free.......2006-03-16
I saw the first Type in Motion book, and it looked pretty interesting, so I bought the Type in Motion 2 because I thought all this cool stuff has happened between the first and second book. Well, the examples aren't that exciting and the layout of the book doesn't make them more so. If you're looking for inspiration, you won't find it here.
A great resource.......2005-12-14
Type in Motion 2 is the follow-up to Mark Woolman's original Type in Motion, the first book to present an overview of animated digital typography when it was published over six years ago. In this volume over 80 projects, from the most advanced studios around the world, are presented in a beautiful book bordering on sensory overload. Over 1300 images of animated typographic images from the Internet, film and television almost come jumping off the pages at the reader. With the sections "Identifying," "Informing," "Storytelling," "Traveling" and "Speculating," the author exhibits numerous projects specific to those topics - frame by frame in most cases - and explains what was needed by the client, the concept to be produced, the process of creation, and the end result. For a designer like myself, specializing in static graphic imagery, Type in Motion 2 is a great lesson in considering the option of potential movement in an image being creating, how that motion might be executed, what movements could be applied, and how the final imagery will impact the communication of the client's message. Those with experience in motion graphics, or desiring a career in the field, will find many examples of challenging concepts, incredible design solutions, and inspiring "eye-candy" in this book of innovative work. - Jeff Fisher, writer of bLog-oMotives and "Logo Notions" on CreativeLatitude.com
This book is missing a key component.......2003-08-29
The title of this book is "Type in Motion," but it's missing just that - type in motion. In order for this book to be really useful, it should have a DVD or CD with image files that can be reviewed. Instead there is nothing but screen grabs, which is interesting but not especially helpful.
I wouldn't bother.

This account is a humorous, inspiring take on life from one of the most well known and beloved Cuban superstars on the scene today. I am aware not only of Saralegui's humor and love of life, but also her extensive humanitarian work with AIDS, teen pregnancy, and many other causes. Reading this title helped me through a very difficult time in my life...three cheers, and I hope there is a sequel.
