Warchild was a perfect book, especially in times like this, well, Vietnam, Afganistan, Iraq, and something which WILL come next.
Burndrive? Hmm, it was a NECESSARY book to unfold the unfinished story of the universe, war and peace.
Cagebird? Difficult. Difficult to be absorbed int the story. I am not mentioning some violences AND child abuses AND sexual assualts.
Believe in or not, they are the key elements in all kinds of wars and riots. Especially, in wars which involvethe clash of different cultures.
Some readers seems to feel awkward about child sexual abuses in this book, but come on, please?
There isn't simply any single war nowadays which dosen't sexually abuse innocent children.
Sexual assaults or traumas or memories involving children like these are horrible, but they have clear purposes not less than missiles or nukes.
Bad guys uses these horror to control kids 100%. (If there are good guys in wars. Don't ask me.)
So I can see all horror episodes in this book as natural causes.
But a victim-children-turned-into-hero of this book?
Yuri is too sensitive & too well-focused to be believed as a victim children.
He remembers all atrocities of his life AND is focused like that?
It is his well-focused ways of thinking which makes me uncomfortable.
I suppose, although the author is absolutely talented, it was a impossible goal from the start : to make a victim a hero of a book which involve so many actions and plots.
Truly shines.......2006-10-10
I read "Warchild" prior to "Cagebird" and I should have reserved my judgement of Karin Lowachee until then. The first book stood out less, it was easier to dismiss as just another "boy grows up to be a warrior" adventure romp in space. "Cagebird," on ther other hand, was discomfiting, left me disturbed (in a great way), and had me thinking back to "Warchild."
The writing is stronger here. Instead of meeting Yuri as a child and seeing his life in real-time, we first get a tantalizing glimpse of him as a young man, mysterious, dangerous, and damaged in some ways. The first several pages grab and intrigue you. Yuri's story is told in flashback, it's a more sophisticated writing device and works here very well. Slowly, the whole picture unfolds of why he is who he is.
Eventually this book will be filed under the label of "Alternate Sexuality." However, there are no labels used in the book. Men and women simply are. The main fixation of Yuri is on his older (male) mentor, but it's so not about that. It's done in a realistic way. Karin Lowachee definitely goes on my list now - recommend unabashedly.
As good as the first two........2005-04-18
In Cagebird (sequel to Warchild and Burndive) the reader is taken to darker places than we have been before. From age four on, Yuri's life is never easy, and his choices, when he has them, are never simple.
I found this book harder to relate to than the previous two, but I didn't care about Yuri any less than the other narrators, nor was I less invested in his story. This book will drag you down into the darkness with him, and it's an incredible ride.
As another reviewer said, I would not recommend starting with this book. Cagebird does not stand alone as well as the first two might. One needs the background from the first two to really get into Yuri's story and know what's happening. Which isn't a bad thing, of course, because Warchild and Burndive are well worth reading.
My only complaint about this book is that it seemed a little rushed at times, and it ended far too soon!
Wow.......2005-04-08
Wow. Just that. Wow.
Warchild made me love.
Burndive made me think.
This one made me feel.
It's uncomfortable, it's raw, it's not easy. It drove me to finish. And Karin did it, made me feel something I never thought I would. She made me care for Yuri. She made him real, not some movie villain. I can understand why he did what he did. I don't agree with it, but I understand it from his point of view now.
I wanted more of Jos, and I still do. I wanted more of Ryan, heck I really expected we'd see a lot of him, which we don't. But I got so caught up in the story of Yuri that I honestly didn't miss either of them until the book was over. And frankly, it leaves me wanting more, which is the same feeling I've had since I first read Warchild. Most books, I read them, I finish them, I move on. Not these, they get under your skin. These are books that will end up dog-eared and worn from multiple re-reads.
I would NOT recommend starting the series with this book. But for anyone who has read the other two, buy it. Now. And if you haven't read Karin's other books, you really don't know what you are missing.
Three for Three.......2005-04-07
Once again, as in Warchild and Burndive, Karin Lowachee shows her mastery of characterization.
What she also shows is that the versatility she displayed in the structuring of her first two novels was no fluke!
Jos, Ryan and Yuri are each truly themselves only; Not just as seen from the outside, through great description, but *felt* from the inside out.
It takes a special writer to place you inside the heads of three different people and weave such fully unique personalities.
I was not disappointed with Cagebird!!

Worth more than just a read.......2000-03-27
Having come across this play nearly four years ago, i had found it very difficult to get hold of a copy, until i got internet access. Having Amazon now enables me to pass on my views to all those out there that have never heard of this play.
The basic plot of this play is based on the seven deadly sins, although it takes some time to work out which sin the mistress has. These 'birds' are trapped in a cage but are more than happy to be there. Until the Wild One joins them in the cage there is no real communication between the actors, and the play seems a little confusing. However the Wild One begins to bring the depth into the play that is not immediatly apparent in the first few scenes.
With lines such as, 'Remember out there, where the wind blows, and the sun shines, and heat and light and air have nothing to do with central heating or electric lamps or air conditioning.' It is possible to imagine this really happening within a birdcage and one bird desperatly trying to escape while the others are set against it. The one thing that this play will give you to take away, is that everyone is trapped in one way or another, Campton uses the idea of birds trapped in a cage, but it could be anything that traps us.

A great play to read, an incredible play to see. It gives total freedom for creative staging. Very powerful. Will get good audience response if done right. Otherwise, will flop.

We met Rucker Bravo in 9/04 SSE MARRYING MOLLY. Tate's his big brother! Tucker had finally come home to Tate's Junction, TX after traveling and going to college--he's an attorney now. Lori Taylor is back in town for Lena Billingworth's wedding - she's Lena's twin! Back in high school Lena was Tucker's girlfriend but Lori had a crush on him. Lena & Tucker broke up the day before the Senior Prom but he was nice enough to take Lena but it wasn't her it was Lori. Lori had a wonderful time and didn't want to the evening to end -- it didn't she and Tucker created a child that night. Tucker & Lori seem to run into each other several times -- Tucker falls in love right away, can't believe he hadn't noticed her back in their teenage years. Brody is 10 years old now and she wants to wait til after the wedding to tell Tucker that Brody's his but he finds out before she can tell him. He is so angry with her but wants to forge a good relationship with Brody and needs her. Over a summer we get to watch and worry Tucker deal with his feelings for Lori. Ms Rimmer has created a whole family with many branches over the country--I love the Bravos.

I really enjoyed Revelation Space and was excited to start this one but as the story progressed I found myself less and less interested in the plot and less and less convinced by the main character.
The ideas were intriguing enough to get me to finish the book, but just barely.

Chasm City is a dangerous place, infected with The Melding Plague that destroys techno-organic implants and augmentation.
The failed mercenary Tanner Mirabel arrives here after a long space voyage, and the death of his previous charges.
Mirabel is following the man that killed his wife and his charge, and is after revenge. He has to work his way up through the society of the City. He comes to the attention of the rich and long lived and ends up working there, further complicating things. They like to play bizarre games to try and relieve their ennui.
On his long voyage he had been infected with a bizarre type of religious memory virus about the founder of the planet Skys Edge, his original home. This causes Mirabel to question what is going on, and his own memory, to finally get to the heart of the mystery.
Read something else.......2007-06-17
If you *really* like both noir and hard sf, this is a must-read. It's fairly well written; you'll feel the unshakeable low-grade despair of the characters in your gut. And there's a set piece involving a space elevator that--I must admit--is pretty darn cool.
But ultimately there was nothing here to hold my interest. The plot is nothing special: I've seen essentially the same plot in more entertaining works. The setting felt a little flat, or maybe contrived. I found the characters unsympathetic.
Well Written, Compelling Story & Characters - Minor Weak Spots.......2007-05-23
Despite a number of the negative comments by reviewers, I found the story very enjoyable - the milieu created by Reynolds is top-notch; certainly a viable setting for future stories.
The technologies are all completely reasonable and the whole background of the first colonies beyond our current solar system are simply wonderful (and sadly realistic).
The characters are much better drawn than in Reynolds first book, Revelation Space, and the stories have a much tighter weave.
That said, there were several points in the book that did not measure up to the rest of the story, and the end was good...but I felt something was missing, a certain flair or something; it was almost too neatly wrapped up. However, the overall story, setting and characters make the book definitely worth while.
If you have not tried Alastair Reynolds' books yet, this might be one to consider first.
Not as good as Revelation Space.......2007-05-14
For fans of Revelation Space, this one disappoints. There are no new ideas here, it's just more of the same with less interesting characters. Even so, it's smarter and more fun than most of the genre.

I have become addicted to Ted Reader's cookbooks. His latest, On Fire in the Kitchen is as adventurous and enjoyable as his others.
He makes the amateur chef want to get back into the kitchen. One word of warning however: you won't want to go out to dinner again....between having fun cooking his recipes, and eating the results, dining out will become boring.
Put your favorite music on, put something special in your best crystal goblet, get out that funky apron....
And start cooking.

I've been grilling since I was a kid and have more than a few grilling books. I completely agree with other reviewer's in that both of Ted's books in this series raise the bar for bbq'ing to an entirely new level. The reciepes taste amazing and are also fun to make. Some of the receipes take a little more time to put together...but they are worth every second of preperation!

You would get a hernia trying to carry this around to antique malls. This book weights at least 5 lbs.
It is well laid out with a section on how to use the book. Most of the pictures are black and white with special designated sections called "Colour Review". There is a periods and styles chart. And lots of advertisements with phone numbers. Various disciplines are covered; some are Irish antiques, carousel animals, Poole pottery, majolica, and ceramics, and French provincial furniture.
I actually obtained it for the section on glass. There are several good descriptions and trademark displays. It mostly targets 18th and 19th century glass. I would like it more if this book had described production methods. However it does cover what it promised "Prices"

What this book is and isn't.......2003-03-07
This is a wonderful book which can help designers be more aware of those who may be looking at their work, who have differences in culture and how they see the world. At least those who live in the U.S.
This book focuses mostly on those who live in "America" who are of different cultures. And that is a good thing.
What would be even more helpful for some of us, is to know how to design for international audiences outside of the US, but then I suppose that would be more than 1 book - more like a whole library of them.
And a further challenge is to be able to design "across cultures" internationally (which seems mostly impossible!)
But there are good, general guidelines which are valuable to those who need to make sure their concepts and designs, don't offend those to whom they wish to express ideas.

Reads Almost Like A Novel.......2001-03-30
Golden tosses interesting tidbits about England into her writing. Not only did I get to learn about a recently popular band, but I also found out that there are two kinds of rugby, that Birmingham is in the middle of the U.K, and that an awful lot of young Englishmen are leaving school at age 16.
The book was written at the start of 1999, when Golden had hopes that Five would someday be big in the U.S. Unfortunately their second album stiffed in the U.S. and Five's manager Bob Herbert died. In a way anyone who reads this book knows how the story ended even though Golden herself did not.

This is such the best book. It tells you everything you need to know about the best band ever, 5ive. It told me stuff I didn't even know before, even though I'm the biggest 5ive fan alive. I suggest you buy it, it rules!

This book is really good, but of course there are some mistakes-Scott's name,and b-day.Scott's birthday is November 22nd,1979! Nothing else was wrong with it in my opinion.There's some great pics of the guys in the center.Has info on their songs.Overall- a good book on a great group!I think other Five fans would enjoy this book even though there are some mistakes.

The book is OK. But i think if your going to right a book about these guys you should at least know the facts! Scotts name is Scott James Tim not Scott Timothy James and his Bday is on the 22nd of November not the 27th! But I guess its ok because it has good pictures and SOME correct information.

Dads, if you can't understand your role after reading this book, you just can't do it! I've read many, many 'dad' books, but this is absolutely my favorite, because it's the best!

The author gives an overall strategy for being a smart dad, as well as specific tips. He is honest! He admits that his fathering journey has not been without its bumps. He arranges things in a metaphor that men can definitely identify with. I've read it several times, and get something more out of it each time.

Well written and organized material that gives you some key things to focus on in raising your kids. Plus each page has a "smart idea", something simple you can do for building a good relationship or for just having fun.
