Amazon.com's Best of 2001
In Carter Beats the Devil, Glen David Gold subjects the past to the same wondrous transformations as the rabbit in a skilled illusionist's hat. Gold's debut novel opens with real-life magician Charles Carter executing a particularly grisly trick, using President Warren G. Harding as a volunteer. Shortly afterwards, Harding dies mysteriously in his San Francisco hotel room, and Carter is forced to flee the country. Or does he? It's only the first of many misdirections in a magical performance by Gold. In the course of subsequent pages, Carter finds himself pursued by the most hapless of FBI agents; falls in love with a beautiful, outspoken blind woman; and confronts an old nemesis bent on destroying him. Throw in countless stunning (and historically accurate) illusions, some beautifully rendered period detail, and historical figures like young inventor Philo T. Farnsworth and self-made millionaire Francis "Borax" Smith, and you have old-fashioned entertainment executed with a decidedly modern sensibility.
Gold has written for movies and TV, so it's no surprise that he delivers snappy, fast-paced dialogue and action scenes as expertly scripted as anything that's come out of Hollywood in years. Carter Beats the Devil has a mustachioed villain, chase scenes, a lion, miraculous escapes, even pirates, for God's sake. Yet none of this is as broadly drawn as it might sound: Gold's characters are driven by childhood sorrows and disappointments in love, just like the rest of us, and they're limned in clever, quicksilver prose. By turns suspenseful, moving, and magical, this is the historical novel to give to anyone who complains that contemporary fiction has lost the ability to both move and entertain. --Mary Park

I tried.......2007-08-21
I normally read non-fiction. Politics, science, and environmental policy are my usual fare. I mention this so you know that I am quite comfortable investing in and reading through relatively dry, boring material.
Having said that, I could not bring myself to finish Carter Beats the Devil. I started reading it on a flight between San Francisco and Portland, and tried, really, really tried, to continue it once I got home.
I couldn't.
This book meanders aimlessly through a plot and introduces characters I couldn't bring myself to care about. I made it just beyond where Carter visits his adult brother and to the murder in...in...where was it again?
Who knows? Certainly not me.
I stuck it on the shelf and cracked open Al Gore's The Assault on Reason.
Ah...much better.
I must admit - I'm puzzled by the glowing reviews of Carter Beats the Devil. I'm surprised anyone would rate this book highly.
Magic and Mayhem - What a Treat!.......2007-05-22
This is a great book. Set in the San Francisco area in the 1920s, it tells a tale of murder, mayhem, romance and magic that is, amazingly, mostly factual. It's true that the author does take some liberties with the facts in several places, but it's all in the spirit of fun at the core of this novel. You'll meet magicians, a US president, secret service men, entrepreneurs, inventors, pirates, lions and elephants before this book ends and if you're like me you'll be left wanting more. Author Glen David Gold captures the spirit of the age - the rapid pace of technological innovation, the profligate spending habits of those with money - with a clarity that made me see the similarities to the present era in a way I had never considered before.
Granted, this was a fairly long book by current standards, but it was a page-turner that captured me within the first few pages and carried me effortlessly along all the way to the end. When will Glen David Gold produce another novel? The sooner the better as far as I am concerned. Definitely recommended.
Humor, History, Adventure and Mystery.......2007-05-18
I can't remember the last time I read something this exciting-- just plain fun! This is a great read for anyone who enjoyed The Illusionist or The Prestige, but has the added advantage of humor infused throughout. Gold has expertly crafted the characters, written clever dialogue, and created an entertaining mix of historical fiction, mystery, adventure, and humor. This novel would translate well on the screen.
Clever, fast-paced and entertaining.......2007-03-14
A well done suspenseful intricately told story that surrounds the mysterious death of President Warren Harding.
The backdrop of magic and Vaudeville gives a colorful cast of characters including; an evil magician, a pet lion, a genius inventor, the money managing brother, Houdini and even a pirate.
Charles Carter is a sympathetic protagonist who we enjoy rooting for, sometimes from the edge of our seat. His magic reminds me of David Copperfield's, amazing and fantastic.
The many historical references add another layer of interest. I gasped out loud several times at the unexpected twists and turns in this story.
Making Character Disappear.......2007-02-04
Glen Gold is a good writer who can show a clever
turn of phrase. He knows how to build a plot and
even though this book wanders off from time to time,
he knows how to charm an audience.
I was thoroughly entertained by Carter and I enjoyed
being the victim of his magic trick as the plot
comes together. What disappointed me was that
there was not much development of Carter as a
character. I didn't feel that I knew him any better
at the end of the book than I did when I followed
his childhood at the beginning.
A book that's about magic and illusion really invites
the reader to ask and answer questions about what's
real and what's smoke and mirrors. I finished this book
feeling sorry that this very good writer didn't go
deeper. Still it was a great entertainment and
perfect for a long airplane ride.

Good Read.......2007-08-14
I liked this book. It was well written, fast paced and moves right along.
It is set in Australia. Nice change of pace, I thought.
Jenny Red was good character. I couldn't believe he dropped her... She has some trust issues, albeit, well placed.
What a great surprise!.......2006-01-12
Usually mixing two genres don't work very well. Either the romance is just plain silly or the serious science fiction aspect is very weak, but this scifi-romance is a wonderful mix.
Our heroine is down on her luck - really down as in hanging on by a thread in the hard scrabble existence that permeates this future world. Once friends and now reunited because our hero needs her help. These two set out on an adventure and a few betrayals.
As with all good science fiction Ms. Maverick does a wonderful job of describing her future world. Good detail and interesting characters makes compels us to keep reading and we buy into this reality.
I would highly recommend this story if you enjoy science fiction with an interesting and compelling relationship (and a few requisite racy scenes).
Somewhat tame.......2005-10-26
I had thought it was going to be along the lines of other books I purchased since it came up as a suggestion. Nothing I would purchase in hardcover to keep.
A romance with plenty of grit........2004-12-13
The third book in the 2176 series (following The Legend of Banzai Maguire and Day of Fire) is a fast paced adventure set in a nightmarish world out of Escape from New York or Mad Max. Jenny Red (so called for her red hair) has been exiled to the penal colony of Australia, for her father attempted to assassinate the Emperor of Asia. D'ekkar Han Valoren, fallen Prince of Asia, needs help getting to the outpost he created for The Shadow Runners, the group that broadcasts the Voice of Freedom to the world. With so much bad blood and repressed attraction between them, can the Jenny and Deck survive not only their dangerous journey, but each other as well. Plenty of action this time around, and a decidedly unromantic setting that grabs the attention. Recommended.
Another Great Addition to an Awesome Series.......2004-08-19
This book is the third of the 2176 series. The first is The Legend of Banzai Macguire followed by Days of Fire (both are great reads). Overall, the series is awesome and should not be missed by any fan of sci fi romance!
The futuristic world created by Maverick is fascinating. Australie has reverted to a penal colony and is isolated off from the rest of the world. Drug-addicted thugs acting like ancient British nobility rule the continent. The other prisoners must survive under their corrupt rule. The background is so interesting, I wish the story could have been longer to learn even more about it.
Jenny Red, the heroine of the story, is a strong heroine, both physically and mentally. I appreciated the fact that the can take care of herself, and did not need the hero to rescue her. Deck, the hero, is not as developed as the heroine - my only complaint about the story. It is not always easy to understand his actions or motivations.
What I loved about this story is the conflict between the two characters. Jenny loves Deck but thinks that he betrayed her. The internal conflict within Jenny about Deck, and the drama, as the story plays out, is rich and fascinating. A very refreshing read from the typical sci fi romance of psychic healers and starship captains.
Great characters, great background, great story - what else do can you ask for in a book?
Don't miss this book or this series!

Dinosaurs in space!.......2007-10-11
This is one of our favorite books! After checking it out multiple times from the library we decided this was one we just had to own. The illustrations are beautiful and detailed. The story holds up to many, many readings and is told with humor and just enough suspence to keep my boys (4 & 6) rivetted without being really scared. Our favorite parts are the cliffhanger pages that end with Captain Raptor in peril and the question "Is this the end of Captain Raptor?" My boys shout NO! as we turn the page to see his exciting escape from danger.
Exciting but not scary.......2007-01-30
My 4 year old loves this book ever since his grandpa brought it home from the library. We have read it probably 100 times and he has the whole thing memorized! In this day and age when young children are exposed to way too much violence and fighting at a young age, this book provides an exciting adventure without that stuff....noone dies, even though there are "weapons" there is no violence, there is nothing too scary, and all the "dangerous" situations get resolved quickly. It's a witty book that is fun to read and has a great twist with the "aliens" being human. The two species are helpful and kind to each other. We love it. I sure hope Captain Raptor will have another adventure...the ending leaves the possibilities wide open! Well done!
A little something for the parents.......2007-01-13
My 3 year old loves dinosaurs and space so this book seemed like a no brainer. However, I was very surprised to see such sophisticated comic book style artwork in a book for children. The writing was cool because it will remind parents of the original Star Trek and that only makes it more fun to mimic the Trek cast and dazzle your child with "your" ingenuity.
At first I read the book in installments, every couple of pages has a cliffhanger like an episode of the live-action Batman series, so that we wouldn't be overwhelmed by the long story before naps. But he quickly caught on that the story would continue if he helped me turn the page. He immediately started requesting the story for almost every nap & bedtime placing this great book in his top 5.
Hope to see more from this author & artist!
Can't Get Enough!.......2006-10-12
My five year old son LOVES this book. He's a HUGE Star Wars fan and adding dinosaurs into the space mix is a no fail combination for him. It's such an intelligent and original children's book--I just can't say enough about it. The book is written a bit like a comic book but much more readable for a younger crowd. It's such a fun read--I definitely don't have that "Oh boy, not THAT book again" feeling when he reaches for it for the 800th time. I hope this turns into a series!
We Want More!.......2006-07-07
The students at my K-5 school LOVED this book. I wish I had purchased a copy for every classroom. In fact, I think I will! Please Mr. O'Malley, let this be just the first of many adventures of Captain Raptor and his fearless crew!

Commentary on Patanjali's sutras. Updated edition.
Customer Reviews:
Important but overlooked classic.......2001-10-23
It remains surprising that so few Westerners have translated or commented on the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, which play a significant role in the transition from a more primitive Hinduism to a mature Vedantaism. Translations are not difficult (these sutras are one-line aphorisms) but capturing the essence and understanding the context is essential. Of existing translations with commentary, Taimni's has the virtue of scholarship, even objectivity. He understands the highest achievements of his author and of the Vedanta tradition. Still, it is a large, even ponderous book, written in big block paragraphs that run to wordiness and repetition. There is no historical or bibliographical apparatus, and the novice will be quickly put off. But Patanjali is important enough to pursue, and this is, with all its shortcomings, the best available version.
It is the best book on the yoga sutras.......1999-06-27
Taimni was a biochemist and his scientific viewpoint helps aid Westerners to understand the subtleties of Patanjali's yoga sutras. The author also starts each sutra with the Sanskrit and the translation before the commentary. He even includes diagrams to help the reader. The yoga sutras are a roadmap to spiritual progress. Taimni makes them exciting and useful to yoga practitioners and meditators, no matter if they are beginners or advanced. A sample set of quotes on pranayama are: "Deep breathing has nothing to do with Pranayama", "Real Pranayama begins when the breath is stopped for some time between inhalation and exhalation." For the advanced meditator who is interested in the last three stages of the eight fold path (dharana, dhyana, and samadhi), Taimni's commentary shows he is well-versed in those states of mind. For example, "In practicing Dharana, it is found that as the depth of abstraction increases and the grip over the mind becomes stronger, the frequency with which the distractions appear becomes smaller." The last half of the yoga sutras dwells on the advanced states of samadhi (including samyama) and here Taimni shines with detailed advice, unlike most other authors of similiar commentaries. "When the Yogi performs Samyama on any quality his mind becomes one with that quality for the time being as has been explained in I-41. The positive qualities like courage, compassion, etc. are not vague nebulous things as they appear to the lower mind but real, living, dynamic principles of unlimited power which cannot manifest fully in the lower worlds for lack of adequate instruments." For me, Taimni's Science of Yoga has been a life-long companion and a handbook to higher consciousness.

A captivating portrait of the life and cooking of Lespinasse's Christian Delouvrier, the four-star chef who has defined French cuisine for the American dining public
Celebrity chefs continue to fascinate growing numbers of increasingly sophisticated foodlovers. Now, Mastering Simplicity puts the spotlight on Christian Delouvrier, one of today's brightest and most distinguished culinary stars, celebrated by Florence Fabricant in the New York Times as "a cook whose entire culinary life is a testament to tradition." Part memoir, part cookbook, it captures the things that have brought Chef Delouvrier to the top of his profession as Executive Chef of the acclaimed four-star restaurant Lespinasse in New York City: his devotion to the best ingredients, his unique blend of techniques, and his mastery of the culinary traditions of southwest France. Chef Delouvrier shares valuable insights on his techniques and the chefs and restaurants that have influenced his style of cooking, along with entertaining anecdotes that bring his experiences to life. At the heart of the book, he shares a variety of his best-loved recipes from around the world, a repertoire of personal favorites that include a delightful Veal Stew (Toulouse), an Upside Down Apple Tart (Paris), and Salmon Cooked in Olive Oil with Arugula Salad and Balsamic Vinegar (New York). Dozens of color and more than 50 black-and-white photographs display finished dishes and capture the life of the chef in his early days in his grandmother's kitchen and on his journey to Lespinasse.
Christian Delouvrier (New York, NY) is Executive Chef at Lespinasse (at the St. Regis Hotel). Trained at the Lycée Hôtelier of Toulouse, he worked in several Michelin-star restaurants in Paris before moving to New York, where he was a chef at Les Célébrités. Jennifer Leuzzi (New York, NY) is a publicist who studied at the Ecole Ritz Escoffier in Paris.
Customer Reviews:
great book.......2007-03-25
typical cookbook for cooks who have background in the field. The book breaks down the recipe in a simple manner, but at times a new cook may have a hard time following.
A very good chef.......2006-02-12
This is a book written by a very professional chef who does not seek the limelight in any way. I have not studied the book in great detail but the minute i saw it I bought it without hesitation. Sure enough it was filled with anecdotes and a review of his years in various restaurants . I was also happy to see recipes for things like fish stock. Does anyone make fish stock anymore? If you want to learn the complicated and the simple this is the book for you.
Another Life in the French Kitchen.......2004-01-08
`Mastering Simplicity' by Christian Delouvrier is a combination celebrity chef memoir and restaurant cookbook with the intended spin of making simple the apparent complexity in the canon of standard French cuisine. On the one hand, the book succeeds in presenting a well-written and interestingly presented sequence of classic French or French style recipes. On the other, it fails in presenting its primary contention that it can simplify French cooking. As the author and his cowriters admit in more than one recipe, this is long with lots of ingredients, but you can do it if you just break it down into its (many) individual steps. All the author has succeeded in doing is to show that the complexity can be broken down into a lot of steps and that what may look simple to a talented professional chef who has been in the business for over thirty years, still looks daunting to the amateur. The observation by Daniel Boulud on the difference between amateurs and professionals still holds. Professionals simply see things differently by virtue of having done the same preparations thousands of times over.
Since Delouvrier fails in making his primary contention, which can set his book apart from all the others, what is the value of the material otherwise? As always, it all depends on what you are looking for.
The book is organized in almost exactly the same style as Daniel Boulud's `Café Boulud Cookbook' with seven chapters of recipes instead of Boulud's four. The chapters are chronological, each dealing with a different stage in the author's career, beginning with his fairly straightforward versions of dishes from la cuisine Bourgeoise such as cassoulet and coq au vin through the author's interpretation of haute cuisine dishes at his very expensive Manhattan venues. The chapters are:
Family Cooking, Boulogne-SurGesse, France
Hotel School and the Early Years, Toulouse, France
Café de la Paix, Paris, France
Journet Through Discovery (Montreal)
Les Celebrites, New York City
LesPinasse and Four Stars, New York City
Basic Recipes (Pantry preparations)
The book does have the author's reminiscences which are entertaining and have a strong family resemblence to memoirs written by several other French chefs.
So the question remains, `Why should I buy this book'.
First, I think the recipes are very good, with the ones in the first four chapters being much more accessible to the amateur than the fifth and sixth recipe. The pantry recipes are interesting in that they show the chef is doing high end French technique. Stock recipes, with a few little twists, may have come right out of the Culinary Institute of America.
Second, the recipes in the first two chapters include some regional specialities outside of Provence and Lyon. The recipes in the last three chapters do include some Oriental influences, but not much.
Third, almost all the recipes are for entrees. Not too much space spent on desserts or salads. The mix of meat, fowl, fin, and shellfish is about right, with very few recipes for rabbit or other game style protein.
Fourth, the headnotes offer interesting comments on the source and nature of the material and the preparation. Good, but not dramatically better than other books.
If you already own a copy of Julia Child's `Mastering the Art of French Cooking' and Jaques Pepin's books on technique, the basis for buying this book narrows down to getting the book to see this chef's take on things plus some recipes from Gascony.
There are no wine pairings, which I don't miss. The photography is competant. There are no ingredient sources listed, but then, there are not a lot of rare ingredients. Just lots of them and some relatively expensive ingredients.
If you want a book like this, I would recommend one first look at Boulud's book cited above. If you really like that kind of book and want more, then I recommend this book to you.

What a simple taste of the past.......2006-12-08
Better than I expected, the coloration and samplers pictured are truly remarkable. A lot of good basic Ohio history, with maps by county and description of how the state was divided. It is one of my favorite things, and I never get tired of picking it up and reading more about their simple lives.

A very good knitting book for children.......2007-01-11
This is one purchase I didn't regret. Although the book is small in size all the designs are very nice and I would like to do most of them. The instructions are very good with schematics. It has 19 patterns the first is a top down raglan sweater in two versions one striped yoke pattern and the other in broad stripes allover, for boys but of course with different colors it will be suitable for girls also. The second sweater is sweater with vertical stripes knit in one piece. There is also a cardigan that is made in made in one piece also. There also patterns for accessories for a pair of socks, a cute jester's hat a bag with a sun motif and a pillow with the same motif that could be coordinated with the sun sweater. This sweater has a very clever idea the motif is knitted on a separate placket that buttons on top of the sweater and there are 7 more motifs that can be knitted so the sweater can have a different appearance each time a child wears it.

Great Book.......2007-07-17
I thought this was a great book. I saw it in the library and thought it looked interesting. So many of the ideas in Sheila Bridges' book are common sense, practical ideas that you don't need a celebutants wallet to afford. That's what I liked about the book.
So many of the reviews of the book speak about Ms. Bridges of course, and indicate that she lives in Manhattan or Upper Manhattan. She lives in a beautiful apartment in Harlem. Yes, Harlem.
Check out the article with pics on the New York Social Diary website.
Hooray for the public library!.......2007-01-07
There are a lot of mixed reviews for this book, so I am hesitant to purchase it at this time, and I haven't yet read it, so will just give it *** because I like Sheila Bridges on TV. I checked my county library system onlne site and was able to order it to be delivered to my nearby branch library. I must confess to doing this a lot. I read customer reviews on Amazon, then request the book from the library.
I do order books and other items from Amazon at various times during the year, so I don't feel like I am using them just for book reviews. : )
Great Real Life Stories and Pictures.......2006-08-10
I really enjoyed this book! I found it very helpful to hear other people's stories about how their lives and their homes "grow together". The pictures were of rooms that I could easily see myself living in -- very "real", not too high-brow.
I enjoyed thinking about how I'd design my own home, once I leave my studio-apartment-of-many-years, and get my long-dreamed of condo!
Barbara
Boring..........2006-07-03
Is this really a designer? I found this book completely lacking in interest with nothing inspiring or innovative. One humdrum and boring room after another. Quite plainly... "plain"! These rooms do not breath with any real "life" at least not for me.
Looking for more............2003-06-20
I've seen many of Sheila's works in magazines so I anxiously bought the book for what I thought would be a more comprehensive analysis, interpretation and implimentation of her style. Instead I found myself reading thoughts and views but no real process to achieving the style.
As an apprentice and in the process of implementing what I have learned in my own home, I would not recommend this book as a tool for learning more for understanding a person's views.

Excellent.......2000-03-05
The best parts of this bio are the interviews with Callas: you get a feeling for her emotions about events as they unfolded in her life. This is especially true close to the end of her life where the grief from her failed relationship with Onassis is so evident in her voice. Generous samples of Callas's key performances are also woven into the bio. I had never heard Callas sing so these samples were welcome and helpful in understanding Callas. (Her antics on the stage and behind the curtain are how you get to know Callas best. Not to mention that the samples allow you to witness firsthand the fiery, brave voice that made her famous). Overall, this was a strong, unconventional bio on a tragic heroine of the stage. I enjoyed it in its entirety.
