Book Description
Cassandra Edwards is a graduate student at Berkeley: gay, brilliant, nerve-wracked, miserable. At the beginning of this novel, she drives back to her family ranch in the foothills of the Sierras to attend the wedding of her identical twin, Judith, to a nice young doctor from Connecticut. Cassandra, however, is hell-bent on sabotaging the wedding.
Dorothy Baker's entrancing tragicomic novella follows an unpredictable course of events in which her heroine appears variously as conniving, self-aware, pitiful, frenzied, absurd, and heartbroken—at once utterly impossible and tremendously sympathetic. Cassandra reckons with her complicated feelings about the sister who she feels owes it to her to be her alter ego; with her father, a brandy-soaked retired professor of philosophy; and with the ghost of her dead mother, as she struggles to come to terms with the only life she has.
First published in 1962, Cassandra at the Wedding is a book of enduring freshness, insight, and verve. Like the fiction of Jeffrey Eugenides and Jhumpa Lahiri, it is the work of a master stylist with a profound understanding of the complexities of the heart and mind.

A book.......2007-03-10
This arrived in good shape and in good time. I appreciate it all.
Baker's crafting of an "unreliable narrator" is worthy of greater notice.......2005-11-19
The novel, Cassandra at the Wedding (first published in 1962), starts out simply enough; the first-person narrator, Cassandra Edwards, tells us that the spring semester has ended at Berkeley, California, where she is writing an M.A. thesis on the contemporary French novel; and she's packing a bag to drive to her parents' ranch near Tipton to attend her sister Judith's marriage to a truly lovable man. Not only is Cassandra a budding scholar, she's a talented pianist, and competitive swimmer, and she loves her sister more than anyone--even more than her sister's fiancee--so Cassie thinks. For this is the point: Cassie cannot bear to part with her nearly identical twin sister and will do almost anything to stop their wedding. As Cassie lets us deeper into her thought processes, the reader will find that--as learned and cultured as she is--Cassie isn't aware of the effects she has on others and on herself: Cassie is often cynical, passive aggressive, and wantonly perverse in her refusal to "get it," i.e., to love and let love. Her insolence towards the people she says she loves is an astonishing dismissal of their emotional lives. The fact that Dorothy Dodds Baker makes it easy for us to see Cassie without Cassie seeing herself is testament to the author's mastery of irony and understatement. Without a doubt Baker has created a character who is both infuriating and heroic. In fact, it's Cassie's youth and intelligence that makes her inability to let her sister go such a riveting contemporary drama. Also of note: The NYRB book cover is an appropriate painting by David Park; Deborah Eisenberg's "Afterward" is informative.

Who's the mole?.......2005-03-02
Fans of the Colby Agency series have undoubtedly been on the edge of their seats to find out which trusted Colby employee has been leaking information to the agencies arch nemesis, the evil Errol Leberman. And many readers have no doubt been anticipating a book centered on the stone-cold investigative expert Victoria has hired to ferret out the rat, as it were. Cole Danes was introduced in Harlequin Intrigue #801, Situation: Out of Control (ISBN: 0-373-22801-5) as a ruthless, obsessed investigator who always gets his man, regardless of collateral damage. This unflattering portrait does not change (to Webb's credit) when he becomes the protagonist in this story. His calculation and extreme hard-heartedness make him a somewhat unusual hero for Harlequin, but it only enhances the enjoyment of the novel.
For the past two years, a stranger has made the life of single mom, Angel Parker, a living hell of fear. A ruthless killer has threatened the life of her child if Angel doesn't discover and pass on the knowledge he needs to perpetrate his evil deeds against Victoria Colby and anyone connected to her. Just when Angel believes the nightmare is over, a kidnapping proves it has just begun. Angel's one hope is the man whose job is to turn her in, the very man whom the stranger insists she lead to his execution.
Can Angel trade one life for another, dearer than her own? What is the secret Cole Danes keeps that makes this personal? Is it possible Cole's heart is not made of stone, but beats faintly behind stone walls? And, if so, can she reach it before times runs out?
For a great start to the Colby Agency saga, read Webb's Safe By His Side (ISBN: 0-373-22583-0), Harlequin Intrigue #583.
Book Description
Lt. Jon Anderson is the newest security officer aboard the U.S.S Enterprise. He joins the crew at a time of mounting tension between the Federation and the Klingon Empire. Previous battles have been inconclusive, but Starfleet Command fears that the Klingons are gearing up for a major offensive. The Enterprise would be on the front lines of an all-out interstellar war.
But Lieutenant Anderson has a secret: he is actually a Klingon infiltrator assigned to sabotage Starfleet from within. His first mission: kill Capt. James T. Kirk.

Another great Star Trek series!.......2005-10-25
A superbly well-written story, that sucks you in and gets you seeing Star Fleet through Klingon eyes a little more. Only 1 major beef: it took 3 years to get the sequel trilogy to the newstands!(Errand of Fury, Book 1 Seeds of Rage). Definitely a great Star Trek book for Original Series and Klingon fans. The way he starts the buildup to Star Trek V is masterful. Lots of good battle stuff, and NO HOLODECKS or overly sensitive politically correct Picard-crew types.
The Edge Of The Sword.......2005-09-03
Love ANY Star Trek and this series is very good!
Super-excellent!.......2004-06-25
I wholeheartedly agree that this classic Star Trek novel is great! Not only capturing the very feel of the TV series, but propelling us into the "human adventure" created and propelled decades ago by the late/great Gene Roddenberry. But this is not just a great Star Trek novel, for it is sci-fi space opera at its best, just like: "Stranger in a Strange Land", "Puppet Masters", "2001", "2010", "Rendezvous with Rama", "Ringworld", all the "Star Trek" and "Star Wars" books, "Advent of the Corps" and others.
Excellent book........2003-06-09
This book started out with two strikes against it; it was part of a trilogy, and it focused on a Klingon. Given that I'm NOT one of the multitudes of Klingon fans among current Star Trek afficionados, and I HATE I HATE I HATE stories that end "to be continued" without finishing what they started, I had low expectations here.
So imagine my pleasant surprise when we actually had a story that finished one full plotline, and ended at a perfectly acceptable point, even if there was an overarching continuing subplot in the background, and one that dealt with the Klingon element in a way that could almost make me, a diehard Original-series, Klingons-are-stereotypical-bad-guys kind of guy, appreciate them.
There are several very large holes in the basic concept, that require a bit more suspension of disbelief than I can manage: the central character, Kell, aka Jon Anderson, is a Klingon infiltrator disguised as a human, much like the character in the episode "Trouble With Tribbles". He is surgically altered to "appear" human, even to the point of having his blood's color changed from lavender to red. But he won't be able to pass any examination from a doctor, as his internal anatomy is essentially unchanged and so he has to go to great lengths to avoid sickbay.
Now, how many ways is this silly? Can a person really expect to be assigned to a starship and NOT get a routine physical exam within 48 hours? Given that the answer to this question is "no", would the Klingons really be dumb enough to try this scam? And if this happened BEFORE "Trouble With Tribbles", and if Kell is eventually discovered (granted, he isn't by the end of this book) wouldn't that have caused the Federation to be more diligent in finding disguised Klingons, thus making it even less likely that THAT infiltrator could have succeeded as far as he did? On the other hand, if it happens AFTER that episode, wouldn't they be even more on guard here? All of this makes the main concept EXTREMELY dubious, but it's such a fun story that I'm at least mostly willing to give it a free ride on the issue. It would have been better, though, if it had been explained that the disguise was good enough to fool a routine physical, but a THOROUGH exam would reveal the deception. That would have been plausible, and have made the suspension of disbelief a LITTLE easier.
Speechless..........2002-12-05
Well, not even sure how to begin. I bought this trilogy thinking that maybe i would get the first book done by christmas(purchased 15 november); I was in for a suprise! I couldnt put it down, I read all 3 books in 15 days. The development of the main character was superb, with the supporting cast there to make a well rounded series. The plot was wonderful, with alot of twists and turns to keep you wondering what would happen next. After finishing this series i couldnt think about anything for days, it reached that deep into me. I could say more, but would risk spoiling the secrets for others so all i have to say in closing is this: Any startrek fan should seriously consider buying this series.
Book Description
Equanimity, good health, peace of mind, and long life are the goals of the ancient Taoist tradition known as "internal alchemy," of which Cultivating Stillness is a key text. Written between the second and fifth centuries, the book is attributed to T'ai Shang Lao-chun—the legendary figure more widely known as Lao-Tzu, author of the Tao-te Ching . The accompanying commentary, written in the nineteenth century by Shui-ch'ing Tzu, explains the alchemical symbolism of the text and the methods for cultivating internal stillness of body and mind. A principal part of the Taoist canon for many centuries, Cultivating Stillness is still the first book studied by Taoist initiates today.
Customer Reviews:
I Ching and Tranquillity.......2007-05-16
A comprehensive view of Tao, I Ching and Zen, from the perspective of aging and transitioning from Earth to Upper Heaven.
A manual for living from the spiritual state of being.......2004-11-10
Cultivating Stillness is a text from the Taoist canon. Its Chinese name is the T'ai Shang Ch'in-ching Ching. Cultivating stillness is a short text of twenty-four segments. An exoteric interpretation will produce a reading of Taoism that focuses on the ideas of wu-wei, simplicity, and peaceful and harmonious living. An esoeric interpretation will reveal hidden instructions on internal alchemy and meditation, nd will offer advice on a lifestyle that is conducive to the cultivation of health and longevity.
Taoist methods of health, longevity, and immortality were often presented in the esoteric terminology of alchemy, which was intended both to reveal and to hide. To those initiated in the practice, the symbolism revealed a world of inner experience. To the uninitiated, the terminology would appear confusing if not meaningness.
This book does use the language of alchemy which will be more suitable for those who are actually practicing Taoist Inner Alchemy (being familiar with I Ching will also help), but it also contains commentaries on the benefits of cultivating stillness, practicing the experience of "nothingness", and points out the obstacles on the path which need to be dealt with.
The contents of the book point the way to raising one's conscousness, merging with the spirit / Tao.
"The teachings presented in Cultivating Stillness
Are suitable for men and women, young and old alike.
When the golden metal and the jade ston merge as one substance,
Ch'ien and k'un will acend to the highest realm of heaven.
Hurry and find the center of true stillness,
Tame your nind and recover your original nature,
Distance yourself from the east and return to the west,
Gather the herbs and complete the alchemical transformation of the pill,
Let your body shed its mortal shell and ascend to the realm of heaven.
The book Cultivating Stillness and its associated illustrations
Are a raft that carries us across the sea of suffering,
The text helps to see through the illusion of lif and eath,
The commentary is a shaft of light through the dark well of ignorance."
Ancient Chinese "Secrets" Revealed - For Those Who Are Ready.......2004-02-06
This book is based on an ancient Taoist text written by Lao Tzu. It is about changing oneself ... creating and maintaining internal harmony, despite external circumstances. Due to its esoteric nature, i.e., internal alchemy ... the author, a Chinese American, was guided by a Taoist master when learning from the original text. With this book, the author becomes our very own "master", as she guides us in understanding the path to "cultivating stillness."
One gets a good description of the Chinese philosophy and underpinnings of the text via a wonderful explanation of the symbols ... we learn about the I Ching, the three treasures, the stove and the cauldron, microcosmic circulation, and cleansing all of which occur within the twelve terrestrial branches. We learn of the symbolism of "the Golden Raven, "the Jade Rabbit","the Golden Palace", "the North Sea", "the Winding River", and "the Southern Mountain." Using breath as the catalyst, the student will eventually experience the regeneration of personal energy into vital energy ... The state of "wang chi", the intermediate state between "wu chi" and "tai chi" is discussed. We learn, "wu chi" is the state of the Void, or Tao. We learn, "tai chi", is the state of differentiating yin and yang, when yin encompasses yang, and yang encompasses yin. On many levels this is a complex book. However, if the reader wants to learn Chinese philosophy, the accompanying symbolism, as well as how this knowledge can transform the human spirit this book is definitely the place to start.
This is a poetry book, a book of free verse, filled with statements by Lao Tzu which precede each chapter. On another level, it is a depth psychology book for the reader who applies some of the techniques in learning about themselves. On yet a separate level, it is a history book about how the Chinese philosophers, primarily Lao Tzu, viewed mankind and the universe ... a place of energy and form, in an eternal dance ... and lastly, it is an artistic book, filled with wonderful explanations about Chinese ideagrams. Although it is a highly complex read, therefore not for everyone, it is a thoroughly enjoyable book for those who are patience and interested in experiencing a unique culture and understanding its viewpoint. Not for the Neophyte, maybe not for the Experienced.......2003-10-21
Eva Wong has done a great service in translating this mystic tome and that effort, and the excellent commentary, is deserving of 4 stars. But a word to the not so wise, this is not for the beginner. One reviewer noted that it took reading many other books before they could begin to understand this one and that may indeed be the case for all of us, because at first sight, I've got nothing. Its completely symbolic and even the commentaries generalize important aspects of the Taoist Path. It is not an instruction guide...at all. As another reviewer put it, it is a book to meditate upon.
The introduction hints at much of the Taoist meditation techniques including circulating qi and the stages of enlightenment but the book does not elaborate and the reader may find, like i did, their taste buds had been whetted for a meal that never came.
A most interesting work for anyone seeking the Tao but it is not a detailed guide, it is scripture to wrap your mind around.
Practice until you understand..........2002-08-20
Eva Wong has done a great service to all who practice Qigong and cannot read the original material in its native tongue. This manual was originally given to neophytes who were starting to walk the path and it is still just as fresh and important as it was when first written.
The book uses the format of starting each section with an illustration of the original page. These illustrations are very interesting and informative (such as the use of the original form of the taiqi symbol) in their own right. Then there is the primary verse followed by the commentary. No suprises here, format-wise, to anyone who has seen western books on Zen sutras and koans.
Wong's commentary displays deep insight into the lessons and there is much to be learned here. I read the book at least once a year and never fail to learn/notice something new. I suspect anyone who practices will come to a similar conclusion.
Excellent!
Book Description
"Samyama - Stillness in Action, Siddhis and Miracles" covers a powerful yoga practice that has been shrouded in mystery for centuries. Yet, it is as close to us as our most immediate hopes and dreams, for it is the principles of Samyama that are operating behind everything good that is happening in our life. The key methods of Samyama are covered here, simplified to enable anyone to engage in daily practice leading to profound results. Our deepest desires can be enlivened by systematically letting go into our inner silence. Whatever we surrender will come back to us a thousand-fold, purified in a divine outpouring. This is "Stillness in Action." Yogani is the author of two landmark books on the world's most effective spiritual practices: "Advanced Yoga Practices - Easy Lessons for Ecstatic Living," a comprehensive user-friendly textbook, and "The Secrets of Wilder," a powerful spiritual novel. The "AYP Enlightenment Series" makes these profound practices available for the first time in a series of concise instruction books. "Samyama" is the fifth book in the series, preceded by "Asanas, Mudras and Bandhas," "Tantra," "Spinal Breathing Pranayama," and "Deep Meditation."
Customer Reviews:
Samyama - essential for all dedicated advanced yoga practitioners.......2007-05-04
I really enjoyed Yogani's book "Samyama - Cultivating Stillness in Action, Siddhis and Miracles", I think it is an excellent read and essential for anyone on the path who is dedicated to liberating themselves.
This was my favourite of Yogani's "Enlightenment Series Books" as it goes far more extensively into material and methods pertaining to the practice of Samyama than has been published before by Yogani or any other spiritual teacher (to my knowledge) on the subject.
Like all of Yogani's writings, it is well written, clear and easy to understand. I finished it within a few days and it has deepened my meditative practices considerably. The "Cosmic Samyama" practice has been a boon for me and has accelerated my inner expansion in profound ways.
Profound coverage of Samyama Yoga!.......2007-03-24
Yogani's most recent book "Samyama - Stillness in Action, Siddhis and Miracles" has the most thorough coverage of this ancient Yoga technique that I have found. It can be practiced successfully with just a slight emergence of inner silence, which is cultivated by deep meditation, described in an earlier book of his popular Enlightenment Series. The time one needs to set aside daily is very minor, only about 10 minutes or less, and could therefore fit into anybody's schedule.
Samyama could be seen as a crystallization in the outer world of the practitioner of the inner stability and harmony gained through meditation. The implications of this process are huge, even if one only sees it as one's life coming into more order, but often people talk about miracles happening in their lives as well. Yogani doesn't stop, however, with just describing the technique itself, how to practice it and how it works. Another very important aspect of Samyama, as with all Yoga practice, is the science of self-pacing. He teaches us in detail how to moderate our practice to avoid getting too much too soon, which could be overwhelming.
Considering the small size of the book (only about 100 pages), it goes even further however, to go into Samyama and its relation to the rise of the Active Witness, Yoga Nidra, Asanas (yoga postures), the Samyama Sutras of Patanjali, relationship of inner silence and ecstasy, and finally Enlightenment. I would much recommend it!
Yogic technique to Siddhis explained in detail.......2007-02-20
In this book Yogani explains in detail the technique used throughout the ages by Yogic Masters to perform Siddhis or miracles. This is a fascinating book that is a treasure to read. Nowhere else will you find the level of detail and understanding of this ancient yogic method revealed in written form. This book is a must read for anyone treading the path to self mastery.
A very well written and informative book ...........2007-01-24
Yogani has really outdone himself this time. He has done a great job covering the basic technique of Samyama, including adding new advanced applications of this age old technique that has been surrounded by mysteries and taboos. Samyama is a yoga technique in which the inner silence that is cultivated during deep meditation is made to expand outwards, which in time can lead to small and big miracles happening spontaneously in our every day life. If Samyama is practiced correctly, it can not be used negatively or misused for personal power. The siddhis or personal powers are achieved as a by product of this practice. Since divine inner silence is required to make Samyama work, it is almost impossible to misuse this powerful technique. That's why Yogani calls it "morally self-regulating."
I have followed the basic Samyama techniques described in this book by Yogani for almost a year and the personal experiences have been profound. I have felt expansion of inner silence during practice which has also flowed into my everyday life. I have also used Samyama with my prayers and healing and the techniques described in this book does enhance both. Also, as described in this book, I have started applying Samyama technique to my asana routine and this is helping me get into my postures with ease and also started using the Cosmic Samyama which has helped balance the energy in me and helped me work with my crown chakra without discomfort.
A very well written and informative book indeed!!!!!
A gift from the Divine........2007-01-24
If my title sounds a little over the top, I can only tell you from my own experience, after reading and practicing Yogani's first book "Deep Meditation" and getting a taste of Inner Silence that Samyama-Cultivating Stillness in Action,Siddis and Miracles is in fact a miracle in that it's showing me how to take "Inner Silence" out into the world in everyday life. Wow! What a read. I highly recommend Yogani's entire Enlightenment Series books.

This seventh edition of John Carter's classic text contains in-depth descriptions of every aspect of antique and modern book collecting from A to Z. All terms are alphabetized for quick reference, including how to take care of pigskin, morocco, or Russian leather, how to tell japon vellum from India proof paper and how to determine "very good copy" in a collectible volume. For first edition collectors, Carter's definition of "follow the flag" explains the historical issues surrounding first and native first texts. The book's pages are charmingly labeled, showing you exactly where the half-title and tailpiece are located and what a printer's imprint page looks like.

Really informative, really helpful.......2006-09-23
This book can be hard to come by (you can order it from Amazon but just try to actually GET it from them--I gave up after 4 months and used an Amazon 3rd party seller). But it's worth hunting for. A wealth of information and handy reference volume for the serious collector and serious bookseller.
Auctions, book conditions, facsimiles and fakes, & more.......2004-07-16
Written by bibliographer John Carter (1905-1975), and originally published in 1952, this 232-page compendium of information and insights has long been considered the "how-to bible" for dedicated antiquarians, bibliophiles, and specialty lib-rarians with respect to locating, evaluating, and acquiring rare and out-of-print titles. Now in a completely revised, expanded, and re-set eighth edition, the ABC For Book Collectors is additionally enhanced with an informative introduction by Nicolas Barker (a personal friend of the late John Carter and the man who is responsible for the updates and revisions of this eighth edition). Among the subject authoritatively covered (and arranged in more than 490 alphabetically presented entries) are technical terms used in book collecting and bibliography; auctions, book conditions, facsimiles and fakes, "points", rarity, and more. This new addition provides up-to-date information on web-based book collecting (including eBay sales). The ABC For Book Collectors is a seminal and essential reference shelf component for dealers and collectors, and will prove of immense interest to authors, publishers, librarians, bibliophiles, bibliographers, and reviewers as well!
The first book a collector should read.......2003-07-05
Carter's book is not dated for me, but timeless. He has a droll and elliptical way of deflating the fatuous inclinations of book dealers. Yes, there is no index, and it is tough to find exact terminology sometimes. But this book is not a mere reference book, it is meant to be read and enjoyed and instruct you in the "what", but also the "why" and "how". Carter, in his manner and wit, shows a *way* of approaching rare books which I think is very healthy. His skewering of the term "mint condition" and his hilarious description of "issue mongers" have me revisiting this book for momentary pleasure again and again. I started in used books in a store about 8 years ago and when I was hired, my boss put this book in my hands. I have always appreciated that gesture. Any collector should find both pleasure and knowledge in this tome.
Subtle, accurate and funny, and indispensable for collectors.......2002-07-17
One of the earlier reviewers -- a history grad student -- noted that this book is "outdated and unorganized." Both of those claims are inaccurate. I'm a manuscripts curator by profession, and this text is certainly not outdated. Book knowledge, and the subtleties of collecting and discriminating among important texts, are the highest priorities of John Carter's book, and he imparts those things with great skill. Several reviewers also criticize the lack of an index or table of contents. Folks, it's an encyclopedia; each term has its own heading, in alphabetical order! The book IS the table of contents and the index. This book was required reading for the "Introduction to Descriptive Bibliography" calss when I first attended Rare Book School in Charlottesville, Virginia in 1998; I'm sure it still is.
It's important for historians (grad student or no) to familiarize themselves with this terminology. "All the terms and abbreviation in the book can be found on the Internet," notes the aforementioned grad student. Whoa! The great hulking trash barge that is the Internet does indeed pull up search terms for all of Carter's entries, but I don't trust them to be accurate. Many book-collecting terms are highly subjective ("first edition," for instance) and I'd never rely on an unvetted digital source for an accurate description if I knew nothing of the subject. You can trust John Carter's book. It should be handy on the bookshelf of every bibliophile. You'll find yourself reaching for it a lot. -Dan Lewis, Ph.D., Curator of the History of Science, the Huntington Library.
Almost great.......2002-04-05
Very informative, well written, witty and interesting. A good read for a reference book. Lack of an index keeps it from being a great book.

ABC of Bookbinding : A Unique Glossary.......2000-03-29
There are several sections in this book including a glossary, an evolution of bookbinding styles, descriptions of historical bookbinding (time and place) and information about actual bookbinders through history.
Jane Greenfield provides a comprehensive glossary for anyone interested in bookbinding. Her small illustrations capture and describe the terminology beautifully.
Not designed as a primary resource, the sections about specific historical periods are overviews. Other books will provide more in-depth information.

Book Description
Make embroidery that really stands out! Silhouetting, or stitching shapes in a single color against a contrasting background, gives the images extra richness and dimension. With your needle, thread, and canvas, sew silhouette cross-stitches in elegant and Romantic-period style; childhood classics such as teddy bears and fairytale motifs; favorite pastimes from sports to gardening; country charms; Christmas joy, including a nativity scene; celebrations; sights and sounds from around the world, and a variety of borders and alphabets.

Wonderful...wonderful !.......2002-08-24
There are so many cross stitching books that are so similar that it is a real joy to find one that is out of the ordinary. The designs are many and for the most part are different and interesting. I bought the book this morning and I have not moved since I started looking at it. My biggest problem is deciding what will I do first. I hope that Ms. Welsby has more books!!!
Not just for cross-stitchers!.......2000-11-15
This book is a treasure trove! I confess, I do not cross-stitch. I do filet crochet, which uses thread to make lace. I have just finished creating a pattern for lace curtains for my kitchen, combining various motifs I found in this cross-stitch book. Since this book features silhouettes, few if any modifications are necessary to make the patterns work for filet. Frankly, it is a better filet collection than many filet books! And of course, I'm sure it's wonderful for cross-stitchers, too. The patterns include wonderful (and unusual) nature scenes, scenes of children at play, cross-cultural patterns, holiday patterns, borders, traditional designs, contemporary designs, and more! You can find patterns for the Taj Mahal, the Statue of Liberty, or a scene right out of the Everglades. And of course you can mix and match motifs to make your own creation. I highly recommend this book.
Book Description
Hailed by Architectural Digest as one of the top 100 designers and architects today, Bill Stubbs has designed penthouses, vacation retreats, and country mansions around the globe from Acapulco to Moscow. In this lively, irreverent memoir, Stubbs recounts the extraordinary, exasperating, and often hilarious adventures in his stellar career.
Illustrated with more than 150 color photographs of the spaces Stubbs has transformed, the book details the activities and thought processes that went into some of his most spectacular projects. These include the metamorphosis of an abandoned country dacha into a baronial mansion in the Ukraine, the renovation of a 100-year-old schoolhouse into stylish apartments for senior citizens in Newport, Rhode Island, and the project that inspired the book's title, a Houston penthouse designed around the color red, which caused his impulsive client to fire him over the phone. (Of course, when the client saw the finished apartment, he loved it-to the point that Stubbs had trouble convincing him to abandon the color in subsequent renovations.) This entertaining volume is a rarity, a design book that people will actually read. AUTHOR BIO: William W. Stubbs, founder and head of his own Houston-based firm, designs interior spaces, both commercial and residential, all over the world. He has been named to "The AD 100," Architectural Digest's list of the world's top designers and architects. He lives in Houston, Texas.

Refreshing candor.......2006-11-10
This is such an entertaining read as well as a look at a wide variety of decorating styles. I first became interested in this decorator (the only one I know by name) in Architectural Digest. These wonderful projects kept coming up in different months and so I started reading the articles that went with the pictures in the projects and discovered Bill Stubbs! He has a fresh eye for every client. He really looks and really listens. How unusual in today's self absorbed world.

Inspirational Ideas.......2006-08-19
Although there are some good layout ideas here that could be applied to any project, the book focuses a great deal of attention on special production techniques and big-budget projects; For instance, you'll find a design that features a gift bag for children that includes crayons and a miniature train, all sporting the advertiser's logo. Another design utilizes bright yellow corrugated paper and a die-cut protective card. These are not your mother's bi-folds printed off the family ink jet.
The book provides details as to who the designers are, the target audience, etc..
I'd recommend it for a designer's library. These are the projects dreams are built on, after all.
Creative Edge Brochures : Brochures.......2001-07-10
This book is a great mid priced book full of photos to kick start your own ideas. There are a few examples that aren't going to please the hard-core cutting edge specialists - but for real world designers there is more than enough to be satisfied. Lots of nice examples for layout, paper sizes and colour.
