"Death changes everything." So begins Dorothy Allison's sprawling, ambitious, and deeply satisfying second novel, Cavedweller. For Delia Byrd, Randall Pritchard's death in a motorcycle accident launches a journey of several thousand miles and almost two decades, a rebirth of sorts that's also a return to her roots. Years before, the handsome but untrustworthy rock star Randall helped Delia flee an abusive husband; Delia escapes physical danger but leaves her two small children behind. In California, her abandoned daughters haunt her dreams and preoccupy her waking hours, even as she sings in Randall's band and gives birth to another daughter, Cissy. But when Randall is killed in a motorcycle accident, Delia packs rebellious Cissy into a broken-down Datsun, bound for Cayro, Georgia, and the one thing that suddenly matters more than anything else: her abandoned children and the chance to be a mother to them once again.
Cayro's poverty is emotional as well as material; the town is a hard place, full of hard people. To them, Delia will always be "that bitch" who abandoned her babies, "that hippie" living a life of sin. Nonetheless, Delia forges a cruel bargain with her former husband: in exchange for Delia's agreeing to care for him as he dies, he gives her a chance to reclaim her daughters. Like Bastard out of Carolina, Allison's acclaimed debut novel, Cavedweller is a chronicle of rage, strength, and survival. Here, however, Allison is equally concerned with the redemptive power of love and forgiveness, and a novel that began with death ends on an unexpectedly sanguine note: "'Yes, it's time for some new songs.'" There are no victims in Dorothy Allison's work; Delia triumphs through sheer force of will, bringing her family together despite the contempt of almost everyone around her.
The novel has its flaws--including occasionally flat-footed prose--but it is in the end compulsively readable, and it's populated by some of the most memorable characters in recent fiction: tough, prickly, flawed, and deeply human, Delia and Cissy are literary creations of the first rank. In describing the complicated emotions that bind and divide them, Allison demonstrates a profoundly unsentimental understanding of the way the human heart works. Cavedweller is the work of a mature artist, her best fiction to date.
Book Description
A lush, epic novel from the New York Times bestselling author of Bastard Out of Carolina.
When Delia Byrd packs up her old Datsun and her daughter Cissy and gets on the Santa Monica Freeway heading south and east, she is leaving everything she has known for ten years: the tinsel glitter of the rock 'n' roll world; her dreams of singing and songwriting; and a life lived on credit cards and whiskey with a man who made promises he couldn't keep. Delia Byrd is going back to Cayro, Georgia, to reclaim her life--and the two daughters she left behind...
Told in the incantatory voice of one of America's most eloquent storytellers, Cavedweller is a sweeping novel of the human spirit, the lost and hidden recesses of the heart, and the place where violence and redemption intersect.
"Luminous. Unabashedly emotional. Pays close attention to the way women get by, the way they come to forgive one another, the way they choose who they will be. Might have been written by George Elliot, had she ever passed through the shockwaves of rock-n-roll." --The New York Times Book Review
"Rich and involving...Its generous vision of the world stays with you." -Newsweek
"With the yarn-spinning rhythm of old Southern legends. An epic novel full of sweet-dream fever." --Boston Globe
"Spectacular. Sensual. Allison has a spare gospel-tinged lyricism that few can match." --New York Newsday
"Hooks the reader on the first page." -Time
"Its narrative takes you over without your realizing it...the heartfelt urgency of what happens to whom carries you along." --Boston Globe
"A startling and powerful novel about a woman's painful salvation...well worth the time and the tears." --New York Post
"Brilliant. Funny, heartbreaking." --Atlanta Journal-Constitution
"Introduces a new cast of indomitable women. Powerful. Sassy. Knowing. An extraordinary book." --Baltimore Sun

blah.......2006-05-04
Bought this on a clearance rack and can now see why it hadn't sold. The characters were unexciting, and the story dragged on and on. I read 4 books while having this one unfinished on my night stand. I've never read any of Allison's other novels, but after reading this one, I don't think I'll jump on the chance. Dede was the most interesting character, and even she couldn't keep me involved.
Let's get to the Point of this Book... .......2006-04-06
Another "Top of the list". The first 50-75 pgs were a little slow, but then I didn't want to put it down!
The way the story weaves the lives of Mom and daughter, leaving the life they knew in CA behind, to search the two daughters left behind in GA... is sad, intriguing, cryptic and dynamic all in one!
Recommended, just to see how the lives of the women of Cayro, Georgia come out on Top, together!!
Meandering yet heartfelt (and recognizably "real") group portrait of a mother and her three daughters.......2006-01-21
"Caveweller," Dorothy Allison's second novel, is nearly overwhelmed by the number of stories it relates. Yet somehow Allison holds everything together in this deeply collective portrait of a mother and her three daughters and the often troubled, sometimes impoverished lives they lead.
The novel has the feel of a multigenerational saga, but its span is barely a decade (with a few flashbacks to an earlier era). A trilogy of sorts, the book presents a series of interrelated family crises; its tragedies and triumphs occur at seemingly random and usually unexpected moments. Newly widowed, Delia Byrd, a recovering singer from a briefly famous rock band, flees with her daughter Cissy to her hometown in Georgia and attempts to reconcile herself with the two daughters she left to a violent husband from an earlier marriage. A claustrophobic tension permeates the resulting relationships: the townsfolk despise this prodigal woman who "abandoned" her daughters for a spin in the limelight; Cissy is homesick for her friends in the fast life in Los Angeles; Delia's first husband is dying of cancer; and her two daughters, with the support of their grandmother, despise and ignore the mother they never knew.
Then the novel shifts both perspective and gears, slowing down quite a bit to focus on the journey through adolescence by Delia's three daughters. Cissy discovers the escapist joy of spelunking, exploring the dark wombs of local caves and losing herself in the odd comfort of pitch-blackness. Her two sisters, the religiously righteous Amanda and the amorally rebellious Dede, confront emotional upheavals that challenge the extremes of their worldviews. And hovering in the background are neighborhood women who offer guidance and love to the four women, as well as humor and insight to the reader.
Fleeting fame, domestic violence, rural poverty, troubled romance, moral ambiguity, Southern life, and a veneer of folk rock--Allison is so casual about linking her themes and her stories, that there are moments (particular after the climatic "resolution" of Delia's homecoming) that the book almost doesn't cohere. Meandering, yes; unfocused, perhaps--but I suppose, so is life, and there is no denying the recognizable realness of the four lead characters. And, in the end, everything comes together, surprisingly yet satisfyingly.
Don't waste your time on this book.......2005-07-11
Ugh! This book was a gift, so of course I read it. Don't waste your time! I read it a year ago and it still sticks in my head as one of the worst books I have read in quite some time.
"The dirt cradle, God's country and the devil's backyard".......2005-05-21
Years ago, Delia Byrd ran away from Cayro, Georgia, hitching a ride West on a rock star's bus and leaving her abusive husband and two young daughters behind. She started a new life in L.A., singing for a rock band called Mud Dog, falling in love with the lead singer of the band and having his child, a daughter named Cissy. But Delia is still haunted by the memory of the daughters she left behind; and when Cissy's father dies in a fatal motorcycle accident, she packs up Cissy and their life in California, determined to return to Cayro and confront her past.
So begins CAVEDWELLER, Dorothy Allison's follow-up to the insanely successful BASTARD OUT OF CAROLINA. When Delia returns home, she is immediately confronted with hostility; everyone from a waitress to her grandfather to the mother of her ex-husband to her daughters treats her with disdain. Clint, Delia's first husband, is dying of bone cancer, and Delia strikes a deal with him to get her daughters back from their grandmother: She'll take care of him until he dies, if he promises to sign custody of the girls over to her. Her daughters are Amanda, the oldest, uptight and holy; DeDe, free-spirited and uncontrollable; and, of course, Cissy, the youngest, insecure, self-conscious, and full of hatred for her mother. CAVEDWELLER chronicles the lives of these women over the course of nearly a decade, through Delia's ownership of the beauty shop, Amanda's marriage, DeDe's volatile relationships, and Cissy's increasing love of "spelunking," exploring underground caves.
I enjoyed this novel quite a bit, although I found the course of the narrative to be somewhat meandering. Often in CAVEDWELLER, Allison focuses on the lives of secondary characters--M.T., Rosemary, Tacey--rather than further developing the characters most important to the narrative. Cissy, DeDe, Amanda, and Clint are richly realized characters; but I left the novel feeling that too much of Delia was left unexplored. With that said, though, I thought CAVEDWELLER was a beautifully written tale of survival and the redemptive power of love and forgiveness. The bonds of family are inescapable; and Allison deftly and expertly explores the complicated relationships among Delia and her three daughters.

Horrid.......2006-10-10
If I could give this book a minus I would. This was a horrid book. The characters Nickoli and Alisa are equally horrid. Don't you just love "Romance Books" were the "Hero" is abusive and unfaithful. Well if you do this may be the book for you. Unfortunetly when I read a romance book I like my H/H to be kind to one another, even act like they care about one another. Oh Mrs. Johnson what were you thinking? I feel this way every time I read one of her books that I finally stopped reading her. I believe her writing seems to be in a class all by itself. And that is not a good thing. She never writes about likable characters. They always cheat, most are abusive, domineering and unlikable. Why would I want to waste my time and money on books like that. Well thankfully I have learned my leasson in this one here. My first attempt at her book was Blaze. Don't bother.
Book Description.......2005-07-27
A reckless and handsome prince risks his title and his heart to win the hand of an innocent enchantress. From the bestselling author of Outlaw comes a dark saga of erotic historical romance, sweeping from fabulous country estates and hunting lodges to the opulent ballrooms and salons of Russian nobility.
This Book is Awful.......2005-01-20
Before this book, I had read about 10 Susan Johnson books and found them all well written and enjoyable. After I read this book, it took me about 2 years before I even picked up another S.J. book. The hero (and I use this term loosely) was sexy in the beginning, but after he's cheated on the heroine about 5 or 6 times he just becomes gross. I don't care how good looking a man is or how good he is in bed, a self-absorbed (...) is just not sexy. I do admit that Nikki is a realistic character, given the period and the fact that he is rich and spoiled, but he is not the type of man that I would base a romance book around. I just found him to be icky. The sex scenes were good though, that's why I gave it 2 stars instead of 1. S.J. has a lot of very good books with good sex scenes, so I'd skip this one and read another.
What's all the fuss about?.......2004-09-17
You would think, from Ms. Johnson's own apologia in the preface of this book, together with the reviews here on Amazon, that the plot and characters' behavior(s) in this novel made it the biggest Neanderthal throwback to the dark ages of romance novels ever.
Well, I was pleasantly surprised. Nikolai may not be the most evolved 19th century gentleman ever created, but he's a typical product of his time (fabulously wealthy, Russian, aristocrat). The heroine, Alisa, has spunk and speaks up against Nikki when he's just too obnoxious; she's not a wimp, just (again) a product of her time...Women were in the control of men during the 19th century, in all countries, and our latter-day freedoms were hard wins. As for the sensuality & "scenes", well, frankly, I've read books that poured it on much, much more raunchily than Ms. Johnson does here; it's all pretty basic! (That's a good thing, it's not a negative!) Having never read anything by Ms. Johnson before, I can say I enjoyed this novel and would read more by her; she's a good writer. I think the relationship between Nikki & Alisa was just "romantic" enough, considering the protagonists involved & the times they were living in, and the end, when Nikki finally comes around to confessing his love for Alisa, is super.
Susan Johnson 's #1 fan.......2004-09-15
Dear readers , I love reading about bad boys, and there is no boy badder, than Nikki Kuzan! If you are softhearted and can't handle the drama that a bad boy is going to bring, then this book is not for you, but to all the others whose a little on the wild side, go an take a ride with Nikki Kuzan. It seems to me that Susan Johnson knows every women's fantasies. Nikki is not your avarage romance hero. He is the kind of hero you save for your naughty dreams. He is devastatingly sexy, hard to get, and every women wants him. Who does he want? (Alisa). He might not show it in the conventional way, but show it he does! Alisa is a wonderful and realistic heroine, because it does'nt matter what era we are living in, there will allways be women who rebels against there plight, and take a chance on something better. Put aside how wonderful Alisa, and Nikky are, the story in itself was magnifecent. Susan Johnson captivates you with her writing. I was hooked from the first page. It took me one day to finish this book. Heroes like Nikki are the very reason I started reading historical romances and not contempary. The men of that era were very dominant and so different from the men of today, but men like Nikky should be left for your fantasies, and I want to live out my fantasies in every book that I read. That is why I think Susan Johnson is such a refreshing author. She was bold enough to write a romance novel like this for all the people who wanted to read something more daring, and for that I am her biggest fan!

My granddaughter requested several Animorph books--this one among them. She loves the series.
Doggy.......2006-03-08
Imagine that your mother died and your dad is getting married again? Well, in the book The Proposal by K.A. Applegate, Marco is suffering from deciding if his dad should get married or not. But there's one problem, his mom isn't really dead. Marco is in a team of five named the "Animorphs", and they can change into any animal they touch. One time when Marco was morphing and thinking about his dad he morphed into a mutant animal, half hawk, half lobster. He's morphing wierdly because he doesn't want his dad to get married but doesn't want his dad to feel bad, so he's torn between two feelings and he's torn between two animals. On the other side of things there is the "Yerks," aliens that are taking over the world and the "Animorphs" have to stop them. The "Yerks" are like slugs that get into your head and take control over your body. They aren't that easy to find. Marco figures out that a guy named "Tennet" is a "Yerk." "Tennet" is a person that gives advise on television and he is recruiting more people to become "Yerks." Marco and his friends must get him off the air permanently, but with Marco's weird morphing it will be hard. Will Marco get over his feelings? Will Tennet be defeated? Will Marco alloow his dad to get married? Read the book and find out.
excellent book.......2006-02-18
It was exciting and funny. You just couldn't stop reading it. Once we read the first chapter we had to read more.
One Mistake.......2004-08-25
I liked this book and it was important to the Animorph series. At the begining Marco (the narrator) is having some trouble with his dad dating again for one reason: His mother might not actully be dead.
Marco starts to become distracted during morphing, which causes problems when the Animorphs decide to follow around a insane Controller recruiting people for the Sharing.
THe one mistake with this book is that the whole thing with Marco's dad dating and getting married seems to happen too fast. It seems to only go throught three or four books while he dates Nora and then gets married.
The ending is a great cliff-hanger that is continued mid
way through Visser.
The Proposal.......2003-01-02
The Yeerks are stepping up their invasion tactics. And Marco has problems of his own. His dad is starting to date. But Marco knows his mother might still be alive.

Book Description
Focusing on the rich heritage of art-making in the eighteenth century, this lushly illustrated book positions both well-known painters and unknown artisans within the framework of their economic lives, their families, and the geographies through which they moved as they created notable careers and memorable objects. In considering both painting and decorative arts simultaneously,Art in a Season of Revolution departs from standard practice and resituates painters as artisans. Moreover, it gives equal play to the lives of the makers and the lives of the objects, to studying both within the interdependent social and economic webs linking local and distant populations of workers, theorists, suppliers, and patrons throughout the mercantile Atlantic.
Emphasizing maritime settlements such as Salem, Newport, and Boston and viewing them within the larger framework of the Atlantic world, Margaretta Lovell considers the ways eighteenth-century New England experience was conditioned by its source cultures and markets. Colonial material culture participated in a nonsubsistence international economy, deriving ideas, pigments, and conventions from abroad, and reexporting them in the effort to enlarge market opportunities or to establish artistic reputations in distant London. Exploring these and other key aspects of the aesthetic and social dimensions of the cultural landscape, Lovell concentrates on a cluster of central issues: the relevance of aesthetic production to social hierarchies; the nature and conditions of artisan career trajectories; the role of replication, imitation, and originality in the creation and marketing of art products; and the constituent elements of individual identity for the makers, for the patrons who were their subjects, and for the creations that were their objects.
Art in a Season of Revolution illuminates the participation of pictures, objects, and makers in their cultures. It invites historians to look at the material world as a source of evidence in their pursuit of even very abstract concerns such as the nature of virtue, the uses of identity, and the experience of time. Arguing in favor of a more complex approach to research at the nexus of aesthetic and ideological concerns, this provocative new book challenges established frameworks for understanding the production of art in British America during the tumultuous decades bracketing the Revolution.

Three basic rules plus some spice and sass.......2005-01-02
Start with three basic rules:
1. Get your background colors and wall and window treatments in place
2. Next, add the large ticket furniture items.
3. Finally, throw in a few (emphasis on FEW) key accessories.
Okay, so that's the basic premise and you really can't go wrong if you stay focused on these key features. After that, you can "tinker" with the rules to fit your own style.
What makes this book work so well are several things: color photos that show how the basics can be varied, depending on room and designer, updated styles and a solid premise. A lot of bang for the buck!

A well-written biography on La Baker.......2005-08-29
The middle-aged librarian at my local library kept a straight face but I wondered what went through her mind. You see, I'd just taken out a copy of Lynn Hanley's "Naked at the Feast" biography - the original edition with Picasso's beautiful portrait of Josephine, nude in all her glory. To onlookers, the cover resembled an erotic art collection.
Some 30 years after Paris bid its final farewell to one of its brightest stars, interest in Josephine Baker's life and career remains high. La Baker's meteoric rise from the slums of St Louis in America to the 'Toast of Paris' is the stuff that legends and dreams are made of.
There are several biographies on Josephine's life on the market. Lynn Hanley's book makes for interesting reading for the following factor: it was written from the prospective of an inquisitive researcher rather than an obsessed hero-worshipping fan. Hanley discovered that many of the myths and legends surround Baker were created and fuelled by the lady herself. Josephine constantly re-invented herself to stay ahead of her game. I'm not going to spoil it and reveal all here.
If you're curious but unfamiliar with Josephine Baker's incredible life and career, I recommend that you read this well-researched but under-rated book first.
