Book Description

One of the great novels of American girlhood, Jean Webster's Daddy-Long- Legs (1912) follows the adventures of an orphan named Judy Abbott, whose letters to her anonymous male benefactor trace her development as an independent thinker and writer. Its sequel, Dear Enemy (1915), also told in letters, follows the progress of Judy's former orphanage now run by her friend Sallie McBride, who struggles to give her young charges hope and a new life. Full of irrepressible female characters that both recall Alcott's Jo March and anticipate the popular heroines of contemporary literature, Webster's novels are witty, heartfelt, and delightfully modern.

5 out of 5 stars Not only 2 great books - but a great value!.......2006-09-22

In Daddy-Long-Legs, Jerusha Abbot is an orphan that gets sent to college by a mysterious trustee that thinks she has a future as an author. The only hint to his identity is the glimpse that Jerusha had of his long legs, as he was leaving. His only request is that she write him a letter once a month (with no hope of ever having a reply). For the next four years, Jerusha learns to be like "other girls", and we watch her grow and mature as she finds her voice.

Dear Enemy, the wonderful sequel, is set after Daddy-Long-Legs, where Jerusha is given the orphanage where she grew up. She enlists her best friend from college (whom we are introduced to in Daddy), Sally, to run the orphanage. Sally, a flighty society girl, is completely changed as she learns to love her orphans and the new life she has chosen to lead.

Both of them are romantic, fun and thoughtful, without the preachy-ness of some of the other girls novels published around the same time.

Best part is that BOTH books are published in this one volume - which is a great deal (and saves room on my already overflowing bookshelf). Footnotes in the back of the book help define some of the terminology/setting of the era.

This is a classic that I read as a child, and I'm so happy to have found it again!

5 out of 5 stars Steamy, fun, sexy and cleaver! A must read!!.......2006-02-25

Wow, what a great steamy, fun romance novel! The h/h (Becca and Turner, who are strictly "just friends") goes to a hypnotherapist to stop smoking, but are mistakenly confused to be a married couple unable to consummate their marriage. Over the next few weeks the h/h goes through a hysterical journey as they discover they may not be "just friends". The writing is quite cleaver, especially the opening scene when they get caught in a closet. When I realized what was really going on I just laughed! This is a book I will re-read and re-read. There is no shortage of sexy steam either. In fact, you could say this book borders on being erotica - not just romance. Lets just say Turner can certainly please a woman, over and over and over. Becca is one lucky lady.

5 out of 5 stars Loads of Fun (and Heat!).......2005-12-19

The best part about this book (and really, any of the books by Elizabeth Bevarly) is the humor that is injected into the story. The writing goes beyond witty - it's downright funny. And yet, the characters still manage to be well-rounded, entertaining, and very romantic. In this story, Becca and Turner - best friends since 1st grade - decide to quit smoking, and they go to see a hypnotherapist who can help them. The hypnotherpist mistakes Becca and Turner for another couple and hypnotizes them to respond to sexual cues instead. What follows is quite hilarious, and takes Becca and Turner's friendship to an entirely new level. Turner is very manly and quite a catch, and Becca is a great companion for him. The story has a very happy ending and is just romantic comedy at its best. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Can Good friends be great lovers?.......2005-09-30

Becca and Turner were best friends since first grade and now work at the same advertising agency.
Becca and Turner were having serious problems at work due to their smoking addition. The problem was getting bigger and bigger so they decided to visit a hypnotherapist to help them with their smoking situation. Only that the hypnotherapist mistakes them with another appointment and instead of helping them with a smoking problem she helps them with a sexual inhibition.
Oh boy the story is fun, hilarious, hot and definitely with a happy ending.
A Hot hero and a strong heroine. Best friends story. What else can you ask for?
If you love stories about friends falling in love, this one is for you.
I highly recommended it if you want to have a great time. I lost count of how many times I read this book.

Find a place in your shelf, because this one is a keeper!

Anyone who has had the hots for a "friend" will thoroughly enjoy Bevarly's portrayal of friends whose relationship evolves into something more. This book is about the hottest thing I've read in ages. Turner is hot, AND a hoot. My perfect man candy!

4 out of 5 stars Solid entry in the series.......2006-08-15

For the most part I feel the Star Wars "Essential Guide" series are a good value for the money. Yes, there is a LOT of SW product out there but the entire line is well done, and this new book on droids is no exception. The illustrations are excellently done, and the text is detailed enough to be interesting but brief enough to be enjoyable. Even a casual SW fan should enjoy this book.

      5 out of 5 stars great update.......2006-08-03

Another great Essential Star Guide by Dan Wallace. This volume includes material from the three prequel movies and is worth every cent. Good job Dan! Looking forward to Helen Keier's New Essential Guide to Aliens.

5 out of 5 stars Definitive Guide Like No Other .......2006-08-01

Finally a New Essential Guide that can truly be called "Essential!" This may be the best essential guide (only the New Essential Chronology competes with it) written. Dan Wallace (with the aid of Able Pena and Pablo Hidalgo) has gone over every nook and cranny of the Star Wars Expanded Universe, and if there's a droid to be found, a detail to uncover, a story-element to expose, he's done it!

After the disappointing New Essential Guide to Vehicles and Vessels (which followed the trend of ignoring a lot of early Expanded Universe sources), I thought I was through with the NEG's. The New Essential Chronology changed that and this book has now upped the ante on ALL future Star Wars reference books!

Everything is here. Entire pages are devoted to characters from rare and even out-of-print continuity sources, from old newspaper strips by Russ Manning, to the Droids animated show and spin-off Star Comics series, to Alan Moore's rare stint on Marvel UK's Empire Strikes Weekly (reprinted in Devilworlds) to the requisite but often overlooked pages of Marvel Star Wars (reprinted recently as A Long Time Ago volumes 1-7), L. Neill Smith's brilliant Lando Calrissian trilogy, RPG sources, novels, young readers books, Dark Horse comics; It's all here and much, much more! Not a stone is left unturned from 1977 to 2006, nearly 30 years of continuity has gone into this book that actually succeeds in demonstrating that the much maligned "appliances" of Star Wars are really fascinating creations in their own right, and every bit as intriguing as their human masters.

Wallace handles the text expertly, weaving bits of continuity to form a much stronger and cohesive whole. This is not a guide for techies either, or even just for those who've read every original source out there, but rather it's a book for the average Star Wars reader written with a narrative structure. Far from simply providing the origin and purpose of the droid in question, each entry features fascinating short biographical tales of some of the famous examples that caused either salvation or destruction to the galaxy! Also, there's a history of droids section that details the dawn of their inception to their persecution and abolition at the hands of the Yuuzahn Vong. Also, as an added bonus, the illustrations here are stunningly realized.

This is definitely a guide you don't want to miss and represents the high watermark Star Wars authors can achieve when they combine love of the universe with intelligent, diligent research and a deft hand at fixing the plotholes and connecting the dots. For from these often disparate pieces, some of the great tales emerge. This book is proof of that.

      Book Description

Sleeping, Dreaming, and Dying is an absorbing account of the expanding dialogue between leading Western scientists and the foremost representative of Buddhism today, the Dalai Lama of Tibet. Revolving around three key moments of consciousness — sleep, dreams, and death — the conversations recorded here are both engrossing and highly readable. Narrated by Francisco Varela, an internationally recognized neuroscientist, the book begins with insightful remarks on the notion of personal identity by noted philosopher Charles Taylor, author of the acclaimed Sources of Self. This sets the stage for Dr. Jerome Engel, Dr. Joyce MacDougal and others to engage in extraordinary exchanges with the Dalai Lama on topics ranging from the neurology of sleep to the yoga of dreams. The conversations also reveal provocative divergences of opinion, as when the Dalai Lama expresses skepticism about "Near Death Experiences" as presented by Joan Halifax.

4 out of 5 stars Not as advertised.......2007-04-10

Informative book. Lots if information about Sleeping, Dreaming, and Dying but little that has to do with the Dalai Lama. These are the notes and observations from a conference on the subject of Sleeping, Dreaming, and Dying in which the Dalai Lama was present. He is a man of few words. This is really an East meets West discussion of the subject. I really learned more about Western thought than Buddhist thought. Still I did learn.

      5 out of 5 stars Profound.......2006-06-14

As far as I know, this is the only book of its kind, documenting a true symposium of "East meets West" in classical dialectic. For anyone interested in a spiritual version of "The Tao of Physics", this is a must-read.

I suspect that many will find this book life changing. I was constantly amazed at the intellectual clarity of the Dalai Lama's points and questions and the utter respect the scientists showed for Eastern understanding.

Some years ago, I had the good fortune of doing a graduate-level independent study with one of the leaders in the field of Near Death Experiences. I suspected that though the phenomenon is not a purely physiological one, as the secular humanists would have us believe, the experiences are culturally dependent. I was simply stunned to read the Dalai Lama, with his wealth of knowledge in spritual and mind-related experiences, suspects the same.

I hope this topic will be covered again in the future, and in greater depth, revealing the results of recent studies using the most modern scientific techniques.

      What a wonderul read!

      5 out of 5 stars Well I Think 5 Stars is Necessary.......2004-03-13

I'm not sure why this book received all the bad reviews that it did (though I confess I have never given a Dalai Lama book less than a 5 start review-I love the guy!). The book is one of a plethora of transcripts of the Mind and Life Conferences held in India, this being the fourth conference in 1992. Sure the discussions are varied, and by no means is everyone simply in agreement with one another here. But the dialogue is engaging and thought provoking, and above all else, illuminating. At the conference we had philosophers, neuroscientists, psychologists, and many more; so of course we are going to get a huge spectrum of views.

The cultural ecologist, Jane Halifax (whom you all may know of), had a particularly fascinating section in here on near death experiences. All the Dalai Lama did was show some uncertainty as to the validity of these claims in light of the Buddhist view of a natural death and rebirth. So what if the Dalai Lama didn't agree with her, you don't have to have agreement to have a good book! Differentiating views provide all of us more food to chew on, and then decide which works for us. It's not a matter of who had it right, but rather, "Does it sound right to you?"

      Enjoy the book!

3 out of 5 stars Decent book, good stuff from the Dalai Lama.......2002-03-22

Several moderm day researchers spend a week with the Dalia Lama and discuss the topics of the books title. The material delivered from the Dalai Lama himself is the best part of this book.

3 out of 5 stars Retracing the flightpath of a butterfly by its droppings.......2001-05-26

Can you imagine a conversation about the essence of art taking place between, oh, say, Picasso and art therapists who treat mental patients, and some chemists who concoct formulaes for oil paints? Something like that is taking place here. The title alone is enough to pique your interest, but the content is less than secret-divulging. If you're not a neurologist,or a specialist in a related area, then much of the material presented by the neurologist will be for all practical purposes useless. If you're not familiar with the basic assumptions of esoteric buddhist psychology, then much of what HH Dalai Lama has to say will sound like so much dogma or articles of faith. I know next to nothing about brain sciences, but am academically acquainted with the buddhist conception of reality, so I found what the Dalai Lama had to say both interesting and amusing. Interesting, because he speaks as plainly as he can about things that are usually wrapped in some hairy buddhist language. Amusing, becuase the Dalai Lama would show utmost courtesy in listening to all the dry academic presentations, which even I found somewhat tedious, and then offer his views about the matter at hand by often beginning with what sounds like a gentle correction rather than a positing of difference of perspective only. I paraphrase from memory: "Well, your numbers and theories are all very nice, but no, it's actually like this." Some of the discussions on REM, and animal responses to dream states are interesting, but just merely interesting. Better on the Discovery channel. Much of the philosopher Charles Taylor's presentations concerning the Western/Christian conception of the Self is reliable but elementary. And dealing with the subject matter at hand, even an eminent philosopher can do only so much with Ratio alone. The book is of some value if one is willing to be open to the possibility that the Dalai Lama may be speaking of things that are real but not measurable, at least not with knobs and dials. Not yet. He never mentions it specifically in the book, but the idea of rebirth and the attendant conditions are indirectly there, for example when he questions the authenticity of the phenomenon of seeing one's departed ones in a near-death experience. He says, "Maybe the person is hallucinating at that point or projecting a wish. They (the loved ones who departed long ago) would have found new bodies by then." Taken as an record of an encounter with the Dalai Lama, this book sheds some light into that aspect of the man that won't show up when he is on Larry King or speaking of compassion to the multitude in Central Park. The guy is a professional in his own field, after all, and he knows his chops. Here, refreshingly enough, he sheds some of his avuncular "hey, be cool, people!" image and divulges some of his professional knowledge at a speed and intensity of delivery considerably higher than the mass media have shown him to be capable.

5 out of 5 stars The solution to a problem.......2005-10-09

A wonderful, wonderful book. We want to make chocolate boxes and they must be inexpensive, quick and easy to make. This book is perfect - clear instructions, lots of templates. We love it.

        5 out of 5 stars u see what u are doing.......2004-11-26

        hi...
when i have this book i do not know how to make gift wrapping but after this book it is easy now because it shows the exact diemensions and you see what u are doing...the materials are very easy to find and cheap...

        3 out of 5 stars Too primitive.......2004-10-01

I was quite disappointed with this book. Included patterns and templates were, well, great if you are in a 5th grade. Some designs were simply tasteless (wrapping a gift in a bubble-wrap - oh please!). I was also expecting to see more techniques for making bows and gift accessories, but there were mostly instructions on how to make boxes and some hideous fabric bags. And does anyone really need 10 introductory pages and 2 pages about the types of ribbons in a 100-page book?

Don't expect to impress anyone except your Mom and Grandma, who will like almost anything you do anyway.

5 out of 5 stars I'm actually looking forward to next Christmas!.......2004-01-02

This book has some of the best gift wrapping tips and ideas I've ever seen.

This Christmas, I was getting bored wrapping gifts the same old way, so I began surfing for some ideas to spice it up a little. This book did not disappoint. It has ideas for all skill levels, and uses materials that are widely available. It also has great wrapping ideas for gifts with unusual shapes and sizes.

It comes complete with simple instructions, step by step photographs and diagrams, and even has all the templates you need to get started.

From now on, all gifts will be spectacular, inside and out.

          Book Description

Drawing on a spectacular private collection of twentieth-century posters, ads, photomontages, and graphic ephemera, this book showcases more than two hundred examples of progressive graphic design from the 1920s and 1930s. The selections represent the work of Soviet, European, and American avant- garde designers and artists who used the new technologies of mass production and distribution to market everything from salad oil to communism to the avant-garde itself.

          Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Greatest Time of Design!.......2003-01-17

this book is a real find! there are some truly magnificent and stylistically ground-breaking samples of early 20th century graphic design here. most of the selections represent the pinnacle of the german and russian avante-garde designers of the 1920's and 30's, including alexandr rodchenko, el lissitsky, lazlo-moholy nagy and many others. But there is also a decent overview of french and american designers as well.

this period of work is profound because of it's ingenuity, daring graphic experiments in text and layout, and it's use of collage, photos and text, and dada influences to create bold graphic statements. the pieces included in this volume span many different media in the graphic arts...war propaganda, art exhibition posters, product advertising, civil program posters, packaging, publishing, and even fine art.
it is a testament to this collection of designers, because many of them worked simultaniously in many different mediums all at once, especially those involved in the bauhaus movement and the russian avante-garde artists.

this book is an excellent overview of this period in graphic design, and would provide endless inspiration for anybody involved in any field of design. i cannot recommend it strongly enough!
