Book Description
Remember that murderous semi chasing Dennis Weaver down a lonely stretch of desert highway? Duel, Steven Spielberg's acclaimed first film, was adapted by Richard Matheson from his unforgettable story of the same name. But "Duel" is only one of the classic suspense tales in this outstanding collection of stories by the Grand Master of Horror, which also contains Matheson's legendary first story, "Born of Man and Woman," as well as several stunning shockers that inspired memorable episodes of The Twilight Zone, including "Little Girl Lost," "Steel," and "Third from the Sun."Like Matheson's previous collection, Nightmare at 20,000 Feet, this collection is an indispensable treasure trove of terror from the New York Times bestselling author of I Am Legend and What Dreams May Come.
Customer Reviews:
You Can Get Duel in another Matheson Anthology Collection called The Incredible Shrinking Man .......2007-07-25
My rating of this collection does not reflect the senstational story Duel but that story is also available in another anthology collection called The Incredible Shrinking Man. That collection in my opinion is a much better buy as it also has Matheson's brilliant story The Shrinking Man. You can buy that story on its own as a stand alone story if you have already purchased this book by dropping the word incredible in the Amazon search engine or just clicking on this link The Shrinking Man (Sf Masterworks). The shrinking man is a great story of a normal guy who keeps shrinking and makes the ultimate enemy of a black widow spider.
So buy this collection if you just want Duel but if you want two good stories buy The Incredible Shrinking Man anthology instead.
Duel is the Best, Some Others Good.......2006-12-19
I agree with some of the other reviewers here. The story Duel is a work of genius (which could actually happen). I even watched the movie again after reading it. The stories in the collection which were made into Twilight Zone episodes were also good, such as Little Girl Lost (with an original explanation). Most of the other stories, however, were typical 1950s sci-fi tales involving flying saucers, invasions by the Martians, rocket ships and all the other cliches. If these stories were all that Matheson had written, I dont know that he would be considered great. One possible exception is the story Shipshape House, which builds the suspense to a really horrifying ending. I found most of this collection pretty dated, but the good stories made getting the book worthwhile. I do recommend the movie Duel, the first one directed by Steven Spielberg. It is too bad the collection wasnt more uniform in quality; I hesitate to pick up his other books after this. Duel is the only story written after the early 1950s, so you know what to expect.
5 Stars For Duel and 1 Star For The Rest.......2006-10-20
As an admirer of Matheson, it pains me to give this rating to a collection of his short stories. Duel is as good as advertised. It stands up well next to the 1971 movie by the same name and is as good as anything Matheson has written. But the rest of the stories in are as dated as a Victrola. B movie themes from the 50s permeate this group. Pure dreck. Barely interesting even as a period piece, each offering is just another variation of sci-fi silliness in the vain of 'I Was A Teenage Werewolf' but without the campy charm. Matheson has written many worthwhile stories and a reader would be rewarded by seeking them out. These selections (Duel excepted) are not among them.
Fun for vintage Sci-Fi fans, but not what I expected........2006-08-31
Overall, I enjoyed the stories, particularly 'SRL Ad', 'Shipshape Home', and 'F---'. The stories that inspired 'Twilight Zone' TV episodes were more of a mixed bag, however, and definitely were improved in the move to television.
The title story is really the highlight of the book, which is why it was a bit disappointing that none of the other stories fit in with 'Duel'. This should have been promoted as a science-fiction anthology. Matheson was clearly inspired by Bradbury, although at times, his work seems derivative, with a lot of '1950s' style dialogue applied to the 'distant future'...of the 1990s!
An interesting introduction (for me) to the work of a writer I'd been curious about.
The great book to read Duel.......2004-11-19
Duel
I think that if you like a book with different stories in it then you would like this book. It has different stories that will keep you on your feet. There are sad stories and there are scary stories. I liked how the stories switch because it keep me wondering how that story would really if the story went on. The fact that the stories don't end like you thought they would is another good reason why to this book. It keeps you thinking on how the story would end. I liked how they put the different stories in order, like how they didn't mix up the stories they put different scary stories with not so scary but thrilling stories.

Wonderful!.......2006-06-21
COLORADO COURTSHIP is a wonderfully tender story of the hardship of one woman crossing country in a wagon train to a new life in a new location. This is another gem by Carolyn Davidson!
Courtship on the Wagon Train at Its Best.......2004-07-14
Carolyn Davidson outdoes herself with Colorado Courtship. Finn Carson knew he wanted Jessica Beaumont from the first time he saw her but she was unfortunately the wife of an ill-tempered, abusive man. She was also a soon-to-be mother. When Jessica's husband is killed for the deed to a valuable piece of property, Finn is first in line to court her. She eventually accepts his proposal and the conflict (and loving) begins.
Although there's an underlying theme in this book that could potentially ruin their relationship, the devotion that Finn shows toward Jessica is very, very special and just melted my heart.
We meet a younger Gage Morgan in this book. He thinks Jessica is the woman for him but he'll find later in Carolyn Davidson's The Marriage Agreement that he only thought Jessica was the love of his life.

Bringing his twin gifts of scientific speculation and scathing satire to bear on that hapless planet, Earth, Lem sends his unlucky cosmonaut, Ijon Tichy, to the Eighth Futurological Congress. Caught up in local revolution, Tichy is shot and so critically wounded that he is flashfrozen to await a future cure. Translated by Michael Kandel.

An exceptionally helpful guide for pastors and teachers. Its literary, exegetical, and theological analyses will enrich any exposition of Genesis.

Reviw of Creation and Blessing by Ross.......2006-07-18
This is a very good and practical book. Its insights are rich and full of care thought, not bogged down like with verbose reading like most commentaries. This is an excellent resource.
Best Genesis Commentary I've Read.......2003-03-07
We used this commentary when I was studying Hebrew in seminary. I found it not only to be the best commentary on Genesis, but also the most enjoyable one to read out of all of my OT commentaries. I like the book because it is very readable, it sheds light on the nuances of the original language, and also has very practical applications. I've forgotten a lot of my Hebrew, but I haven't forgotten this book!
An exceptional study of the book of beginnings........2000-03-06
I purchased this book for a second year Bible college class on the book of Genesis. Dr. Ross' book was very helpful to me as an aspiring pastor because not only was he helpful in the technical aspects of the book of Genesis but he was also helpful in illustrating how the book of Genesis could be applied in our society today. This book is a must for any Old Testament scholar and for any preacher or teacher of God's Word.
A very readable and complete exposition of Genesis........1998-05-26
Dr. Ross is one of the most respected Old Testament scholars in America today. This book brings new understanding to the foundational book of the Bible. Dr. Ross is extremely faithful to the scripture and writes in a way that makes even the most difficult passages easy to understand for all. Dr. Ross currently is O.T. Professor at Trinity Episcopal School of Ministry. He has two doctorate degrees from Cambridge University. This book is used as the text book in a number of seminaries around the world.

What's Cooking America
ASIN: 0762711469 |
Book Description
America has a rich history of regional cooking. From Brooklyn bialys to San Francisco cioppino to southern fried chicken, traditional food is as large a part of the local culture as the landscape and the monuments. Some dishes are so famous that they are an essential part of any trip - imagine going to Chicago without sampling deep-dish pizza? Or New Orleans without trying jambalaya? Or Miami without tasting key lime pie? Now you don't have to travel any farther than your own kitchen to enjoy these specialties. I'll Have What They're Having offers time-tested, tried-and-true recipes for more than 130 hidden gems of regional fare - home cooking at its most creative, the kind of food that you want to bring back from your travels and make again and again. Recipes include helpful tips on appropriate eating etiquette and making each dish with authentic touches that reflect its cultural origins. In addition, you'll learn about the stories - both humorous and historical - behind these delicious and sometimes off-beat local favorites. Did you know that the proper role of the pinto bean in chili is a 150-year-old argument, one that is known to have led to a riot in an Oklahoma prison and a series of barroom brawls in Texas? Or that Hangtown fry, a mouth-watering, one-skillet meal of eggs, oysters, and bacon was originally sold to gold miners in the 1800s for $6.00 a plate - the equivalent of hundreds of dollars today! Part cookbook, part history lesson, this engaging collection celebrates the flavors and traditions that showcase the best of American cuisine. (8 1/2 x 10 1/4, 256 pages, b&w photos, recipes)

What's Cooking America.......2005-07-16
Linda Stradley walked into my bookstore one day promoting her newly published cookbook. She opened it up to page 77 and pointed at the recipe "High Tea Lemon Cookies". She said, "Try this recipe. It's one of my favorites in this book". So I bought "WHAT'S COOKING AMERICA" and she signed it for me. I have tried so many of the recipes in this book and never been disappointed but my favorite will always be the "High Tea Lemon Cookies". They melt in your mouth. They are so easy to make and after nearly 7 years they are still requested when I go to parties, pot lucks, etc.
Pass the bialys and lutefisk, please.......2004-12-19
Foodies who travel a lot are always on the look-out for local or regional specialties when they visit a new area. Like Ropa Vieja or a Cuban Sandwich in Miami, or Cincinnati-style chili (always "five-way"), or a Garbage Plate in Rochester, or a Beef on Weck in Buffalo, Hot Brown in Louisville. I think I would argue that some of what the author considers "local cuisine," though, is too widely available to qualify -- like Chicken-Fried Steak (which originated in south Texas but you can get it anywhere in the western half of the country), or breakfast tacos (now ubiquitous, even in supermarkets). She organizes dishes by courses, but there's a regional index in the back. Each recipe is introduced by a sometimes lengthy sociological essay. I have to say those for gumbo, muffulettas, and king cakes were pretty good renditions (though, naturally, everyone has their own "best" version). I believe I'll pass on the "prairie oysters" and the Hangtown Fry, though.

Brief comment.......2007-04-11
Very nice book well ilustrated covering aspects of the jade stone through the History. I recommend it to those that are interested in this subject.
Great Book!.......2006-12-21
Gives you a sense of value for items you already own or want to purchase made of Jade. I found that the information was well organized and the photographs give you a sense of the detail of carvings. I strongly recommend it!
Jade: 5000 B.C. to 1912 A.D........2006-11-16
I just received as a gift a copy of this beautiful and informative book on jade. As a jade collector for many years, I was gratified to find similar pieces in the book to those I have. The author is very knowledgable and I recommend this book to anyone interested in the history of jade carvings and particularly to those who own objects created from these beautiful and varied gemstones.
The book now enjoys a prized location on my livingroom coffee table.
Excellent reference for novices and collectors alike.......2006-09-27
I found this book to be a comprehensive collection of images and information on jade. It was well organized and easy to read - I found Mr. Veleanu's writing style very comfortable yet knowledgeable! I know I will continue to reference it for many years to come.
Vanity book on jade.......2006-06-01
I ordered this book hoping that it would attempt to provide a reference tool on authentication, dating and typology of jade for Western collectors. Such books exist in Chinese language, although they tend to be overly subjective, written by collectors, or narrowly academic, written by academics. There are also Chinese-language references for the general public that are simplistic and lacking in the most basic grounding in history and academic references.
This turns out to be a highly subjective book by an amateur Western collector with little or no knowledge of the extensive bibliography on jade in Western languages, let alone Chinese. I am tempted to throw this book away. Almost all of the jade illustrated is fake or very crude, or misattributed (Liangzhu culture to Shang, for example). Here and there an interesting piece sneaks in but this author would not be able to identify it or tell the reader what makes it interesting.
About the only redeeming feature of the book is an introduction in which Mr. Veleanu talks about his own life experience and how he came, quite late in life, to an interest in jade. I only hope that he applied more rigor to his studies of medicine than he does to his research on jade.

I never knew their were so many wonderful boarders on quilts. All the examples are explained in great detail and easy to understand and follow. A truely a must have book for all quilters.

Lots and lots of patterns.......2005-09-01
When making a quilt, I'm usually so anxious to get the quilt done that I don't spend time to make a nice border. But this book changed my mind about that. It's full of border possibilities with clear instructions.
Striped piecing used for pieced borders.......2003-05-24
I have never used striped piecing in quilting. I am an old fashion scrap quilter. I know there are those that buy their fabrics so they always have enough. There is a lot of waste with the authors method. I intend to use this on baby quilts I am a firm believer in piecing the border. My way is tedious and I am looking forward to speeding up the process. A few colored pictures mostly black and white drawings. You still have to determine your pattern size.
Easy Speed Pieced and Foundation Borders.......2000-04-23
The illustrations and directions in this book have taken the mystery out of the puzzle of pieced borders. The same way Simply Quilts broke down the mystery and showed us the magician's secrets, we can now get past solid 4" strips of fabric for our borders.
Looks hard but very easy to do!.......1999-07-15
Want to make your quilt look really special - piece the border. This book has quick piecing techniques to make complicated borders that are actually very quick and easy to rotary cut and stitch. Great for the beginner, intermediate or advanced quilter.
Book Description
Since the 1960s, recurring cycles of political activism over youth crime have motivated efforts to remove adolescents from the juvenile court. Periodic surges of crime—youth violence in the 1970s, the spread of gangs in the 1980s, and more recently, epidemic gun violence and drug-related crime—have spurred laws and policies aimed at narrowing the reach of the juvenile court. Despite declining juvenile crime rates, every state in the country has increased the number of youths tried and punished as adults.
Research in this area has not kept pace with these legislative developments. There has never been a detailed, sociolegal analytic book devoted to this topic. In this important collection, researchers discuss policy, substantive procedural and empirical dimensions of waivers, and where the boundaries of the courts lie. Part 1 provides an overview of the origins and development of law and contemporary policy on the jurisdiction of adolescents. Part 2 examines the effects of jurisdictional shifts. Part 3 offers valuable insight into the developmental and psychological aspects of current and future reforms.

In this third book, the authors have created many innovative foundation border patterns with simple, no-math string piecing, as well as borders made of strips, squares, triangles, blocks, and block segments. The section on built-in borders explores designs made by extending blocks into the border, by completing a secondary design where two blocks meet, and by using recolored whole or partial blocks. The reader will also find a handy summary of paper foundation piecing techniques and about 30 full sized border patterns. A collection of photos of more than 50 quilts with successful foundation pieced borders will inspire quilters to explore new options. AUTHORBIO: A resident of Raleigh, North Carolina, Jane has been a quiltmaker for more than 20 years. She teaches, lectures, and judges quilts across the country. She likes to work with traditional patterns, using innovative colorations to create new graphics. Log Cabin designs are among her favorites. AUTHORBIO: Dixie Haywood resides in Pensacola, Florida. She has been quilting for more than 40 years. Dixie also teaches and judges throughout the country and has authored over 150 articles and five books (three with Jane Hall). Crossing Borders: Contemporary Czech and Slovak Photography
Fall 1998
A new generation of Czech and Slovak photographers--heirs to the legacy of such modern masters as Josef Sudek and Frantisek Driktol--will be the subject of the August 1998 issue of Aperture, featuring images never before published in the West. In the Aperture tradition of investigating the contemporary photography of individual nations, Crossing Borders probes the cultural, social, and emotional climate of the post-Communist era as experienced by twenty-three photographers.
The writings of such prominent Czech and Slovak writers as the novelist Jan Novak, author of The Willys Dream Kit, and the poet Anna Ondrejková help to illuminate the full dimensions of contemporary creative life in the Czech and Slovak Republics.

A quiet, elegant collection of work.......1998-12-02
The high-quality printing makes the most of these B&W images, which are evocative and emotional of a part of Europe less widely seen.
Book Description
Cross border acquisitions of US companies have become increasingly important over the last few years, especially as the overall volume of deals in the US continues to evaporate. European buyers have represented a significant portion of this cross border activity. However, successful deal-making across borders today requires more than just an expertise in the laws, economic conditions, cultural differences and "social issues" affecting the target company. The difficult and competitive environment in the current marketplace requires knowledge of the distinctive and sometimes complex characteristics of deal terms and structures, international financing techniques, regulatory and government issues, and human resource issues, as well as tax, valuation and - today's hot topic - accounting issues.
This report will summarize practices used for effectively implementing cross-border mergers and acquisitions, with a specific focus on the acquisition of US companies by European buyers. The findings of this report will be based upon guidance from and interviews with European multi-national corporations that have been active in acquiring companies in the US market.

Book Description
It's the most creative how-to book to come along in years! 100 great ideas and projects will change the way you look at your local home improvement center. With a layout inspired by the store's floor plan, this abundantly photographed guide leads a tour through the different departments, from plumbing to hardware, electrical to lawn and garden, suggesting a whole host of imaginative ways to use what's on the shelves. Many of the projects take advantage of the latest decorating trend: repurposing, where items conceived for one function are used in an entirely different and original way. Craft curtain tiebacks from welded chain, transform glass or metal screens into coasters, turn copper plumping pipe into candleholders. With almost no effort at all, a tool holder becomes a bud vase, a grill tray takes new life as a cool retro TV tray, and standard millwork lumber becomes a Post Coatrack. Only basic do-it-yourself techniques are needed at most.

Lots of Fun Ideas.......2004-07-05
I mistakenly picked this up thinking it would show samples of cabinet knobs for my new house. Instead it takes utilitarian objects like steel pipes or locknuts to make unique home decorations.
Some look arty while others look just makeshift. Some are easy while others require some handyman skills. This really will get you to thinking outside the usual decorating, store bought stuff. I particularly liked the back-to-back fence caps turned into candleholders. The towel bar plus "S" hooks makes a great mug rack, while the upright can light teamed with a radiator grill makes a dramatic light stand for an end table.
Give it a try, for some unique projects.
