Book Description
Set against the backdrop of Paris and the court of Versailles, émilie's Voice introduces a young heroine of modest upbringing who possesses a special gift: the voice of an angel. When distinguished composer Marc-Antoine Charpentier hears émilie's voice, he offers to instruct her in the art of singing with the ultimate goal of presenting her at the court of Louis XIV. Her head filled with dreams of elegant gowns, opulent jewels, and the thrill of someday performing in the great houses of Paris, she begins her training -- until a scheming noblewoman looking to unseat the king's official mistress interferes by preemptively bringing émilie to Versailles.
There, amid royal pomp and splendor, she is swept up in dangerous palatial intrigues, becoming a pawn in aristocratic power games. But it is the passionate battle for control over her life and career waged between Charpentier and Louis XIV's official court composer, Jean-Baptiste Lully, that has far-reaching consequences for a girl on the verge of becoming a woman and a singer on the verge of becoming extraordinary.

Not so good first novel.......2007-08-23
This book is a pointless waste of your time. You may get through it because the characters start out with promise. But, alas, Ms. Dunlap's skills gave out on her before she could complete the story. You will be unhappy that you wasted your time on this book. However, Ms. Dunlap's, second novel, Liszt's Kiss, is much better and you are most likely to enjoy reading it. It is very well written, tells a good story, and the historical fiction highlights certain French figures we don't often read much about. I really liked it.
Originally Posted on Romance Junkies in 2005.......2007-05-13
Only a person with outstanding knowledge of music, music history, and 17th century Paris could write a historical saga as entertaining and totally engrossing as Ms. Dunlap's EMILIE'S VOICE. Dunlap, the Director of Development for the Connecticut Opera, holds a PhD in Music History from Yale University. Her many years of teaching, writing about, and working in the world of music and opera have lent their unique voice to this superb debut novel.
By 1675, at the royal court of Versailles a few miles outside of Paris, Louis XIV ruled with a heavy hand. Versailles had become one of his most prized courts to sit, and although he rarely visited the city of Paris itself, the noblemen, courtier's, and men of wit and wisdom that graced the halls of the court of Versailles provided him with constant entertainment.
For Emilie, a young girl on the cusp of adulthood, having the voice of an angel has brought her to the attention of renowned composer Marc-Antoine Charpentier. A childhood friend of Louis XIV, Charpentier takes Emilie under his wing-determined, at all costs, to train her to become the most wonderful of courtiers at Louis' court at Versailles. But danger comes in many forms, and Charpentier's conniving schemes to keep Emilie from the control of rival Jean-Baptiste Lully, the official court composer, creates undue strain upon Emilie. And when a noblewoman hoping to usurp the king's mistress brings Emilie to court before she's ready, everyone involved has something to lose.
EMILIE'S VOICE is a wonderful, richly engaging book of power, betrayal, music, mayhem, and, above all, Emilie's wish to have control of her own life. For a girl who wants only to sing, that desire has brought more trouble than pleasure. It seems that everyone has a hidden agenda for Emilie and her angelic voice-but what of Emilie's own needs and desires?
Enjoyable.......2007-02-16
The book, itself, was a basically enjoyable and easy read. The plot seemed somewhat contrived and read like a suspense thriller. I agree that the characters were one-dimensional and predictable in their actions and they fit the typical stereotypes for such stories. Included were a manipulative, conniving, power-hungry villainess; her willing, but somewhat stupid co-conspirator; an innocent and naive young girl; her uneducated family; and a romantic knight-in-shining armor type. Of course, a typical sub-plot based on revenge played right along side the main story and eventually all got tied together. Two of the main supporting female characters had very similar names and I found myself confused often. I certainly couldn't understand why such a fuss was being made over a young innocent girl and how her actions could play such a pivotal role in a battle for power in the royal circles. The suspense kept growing throughout the story and I was eager to get to the conclusion so I kept reading; I finished the book about two weeks ago and couldn't tell you now how the story ended (that's how anticlimactic it was).
In all, I enjoyed the historical fiction genre and locale. The writing was easy and fast and a pleasant way to pass the time. If you can get past the stereotypical storyline, you'll enjoy the book.
Shallow as the Kiddie Pool.......2006-05-08
Being an avid reader of historical fiction, I had high hopes for this book. I mean, it had all the hallmarks of a good novel: kind, beautiful, talented girl gets swept up in the intrigues of an immoral court. Unfortunately, this book had about the depth of a 2-foot, peed-in kiddie pool.
As a synopsis: Young Emilie is a poor, hardworking man's daughter with the voice of an angel. Her talents bring her to the attention of exiled court musician, Charpentier. When a wily courtier hears Emilie sing at her debut, he carries her away to court where she quickly becomes the pawn of two very powerful (and rival) women. Emilie then realizes her undying passion for her former music teacher, Charpentier, and agrees to a completely off-your-rocker plan to escape the court and live in happiness with her love forever after.
This plot could have been good, even great, but the easy-read style of writing and the insufferable characters cause it to plunge. The plot is horribly predictable and you find yourself wondering how Emilie could be so stupid. You know you're reading a bad book when the main character (who the author tries to portray as a delicate innocent) is actually making you angry! The girl comes off as naive, not innocent, and shallow to boot! It's hard to sympathize when, after he debut (at which she shines, mind you), she steps in a puddle and cries herself to sleep because she ruined her slippers. I mean, come on!
In conclusion, the book falls far, far, far short of expectations, both in plot and characterization. Save yourself the trouble.
Excellent. A must read for all who love music, history and romance........2006-03-02
I just finished reading this absolutely beautiful book. Great cover sets the tone of what you're going to find inside. Emilie's innoncence, Charpentier's passion and Madame De Maintenon's scheming kept me turning the pages to the very end. Did not sleep all night reading!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! SUPERB.
Book Description
Award-winning author Jillian Hunter both amuses and delights with another irresistible tale of scandal and seduction.

Simply could not put it down !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2007-08-07
I really loved the whole series of these books . They were great . The characters are so funny , Keep up the good work Jillian Hunter , you have a satisfied fan in me .
Favorite of the series!.......2006-11-19
This book by far is my favorite of the Boscastle series. It had suspense, romance, and just flowed except for the ending. Again the author does a blink and you will miss it wrap up of the mystery. I think the ending was abrupt so that is why I can't give it 5 stars.
So very very good until the end!.......2006-10-28
I absolutely could not see any way that I would not be giving this book a 5 star review - but these words by another kept me wondering
"I do wish this book had a better ending. I would loved to see these two get married. It end on a rather dull note"
What the heck was Ms. Hunter thinking? This book was so unique - the storyline so different with Chloe hiding the secret of Dominick being alive and her falling in love with someone everyone else thought was dead. the dialog between these two was especially witty and intriguing. I loved them as a couple. He was dark and mysterious and she was banished to redeem her reputation. What immediately happens is a 1/2 dead Domminick appears in her bedroom - well that sure is going to help her reputation. and the fun and the drama of the chemistry between these two truly is wonderful. Ms. Hunter even manages to write a beautiful way the two manage to get together after all of Chloes brothers discover her secret little affair with a dead Domminick. The story plays out just perfectly until the end - and then it just ends. This was a disappointment and I dont understand why??
the love affair of an english lord.......2006-07-11
Spicy charecters, humor and a happy ending. Can't ask for anything more.
An Average Romantic Tale.......2005-11-16
This is a fairly quick read, with a predictable story. I read the entire book in a day, but wished my next order from Amazon had already arrived. The main characters, Chloe and Dominic, simply don't have much to distinguish them from hundreds of other love-struck regency Brits constrained by social mores and convention. Aside from the main story of their mutual seduction, there is the sub-plot of how Dominic will prove that his uncle is a killer and traitor to the Crown. ...Yawn...

NUCLEAR POWERED NOBILITY.......2006-04-19
My first Bolo story was "Rogue Bolo", which I read over 20yrs ago, and which got me
hooked on Mr Laumer's admirable and self-aware Continental Siege Units. Hidden meanings,
allegory and relentlessly stellar prose may be sparse, but well-rendered entertainment and
thought-provoking stories are common in the Bolo series. A noble, multi-PhD-level artificial
intelligence that is not a two-arms, two-legs "classical-style" robot is a suprisingly engaging
idea. These beings have 4 sets of treads,2 megaton per second firepower, and armor
that can survive a nuclear explosion 50yds away. Anyone who has an issue with "military scifi"
has an issue with scifi in general. As long as humans are human, there will always be those
who will stop at nothing to impose their ideas on everyone else by force, whether its a street
thug or an Evil Interstellar Empire. Warp drive and colonization of other star systems is just
going to export the same old crap out into a bigger playing field. The idea of the evil that
men do taking place on such a vastly magnified scale is a hideous contemplation that has given
any true scifi buff (military or otherwise) a shiver or two. The bad guys have the shortcuts and
hyperfocus of evil on their side - the rest of us have the Bolos!
Combination of 1976 Bolo & 1986 Rogue Bolo .......2006-01-03
This is a combination of previously released works. The 1976 Bolo was a collection of short stories of the computer-controlled tanks called Bolo. Rogue Bolo is a novel from 1986.
1976 Bolo:
o A Short History of the Bolo Fighting Machines (intro)
o The Night of the Trolls
o Courier (aka The Frozen Planet)
o Field Test
o The Last Command
o A Relic of War
o Combat Unit
Combat Unit, written in 1960, was Laumer's first Bolo story. The Night of the Trolls is from 1968. The Last Command: 1971. A Relic of War: 1972. Field Test: Mar 1976. Don't let the 1990 date of Compleat Bolo fool you, these stories have been out for a while. However, that is not to say they are not worth reading if you haven't read them, They are considered classics and are the originals by Laumer. This is just to let those that follow the Bolo series that they may have already read some or all of these stories.
If you don't already know, the Bolo stories are of computer-controlled, extremely armored and weaponed tanks (think of the tanks in beginning of the movie `The Terminator') that typically act with a strong sense of integrity and honor. In a sense it is like mechanized human engineering since these tanks are programmed with these qualities, but nevertheless the Bolo's are at times, if not always, to be admired for their actions. To be fair to us human beings, it's easier to be a bad-ass when you're surrounded by several tons of steel and quite formidable fire power.
I suppose the Bolo series would fall under the category of Military science fiction, which is considered a contentious issue in the present day Speculative Fiction `cutting-edge' world. These stories are classics though and came out before I even heard the term Military SF, and are some of the originals of that entire subgenre. Not being familiar with Military SF, I cannot say how these stories compare to more modern works. To me, I found the stories just OK. The concept behind them was a lot more appealing than stories themselves. You can consider the stories to be a glorification of war as the speculative fiction writers would say or you can consider them to be the best representation of human emotions in extreme conditions.
A great introduction to the Bolos.......2004-05-17
Anyone wishing to become familiar with Keith Laumer's Bolos should start here. It collects many previously published and widely scattered stories into one handy volume, and the writing is terrific. The stories cover many different eras, from the mid-21st century to the far future. A great all-around collection of SF stories, and the perfect starting place for the universe of the Bolos.
NOTHING new, just reprints of old stories! Not worth it!.......2000-12-22
Very, Very disappointed. I have all of the Bolo books and love them, but this was nothing new, and that is what I expected. Some of the stories do not even fit in with the newer ones. If you want to read his oldest stuff, or are a first time reader, then this might be a good start. Paying a premium price is not worth it.

I love this book............2007-09-03
It is not a book that you have to read cover to cover in that order but a seasonal book that gives you ideas to incorporate into your own personal practice.
The Grandmother of Time.......2007-07-15
I have studied the wiccan path for a number of years on my own but only recently have been fortunate to have the guidance of an excellent teacher who recommended this book. I have enjoyed what this book has added to my teachings and to my everyday activities.
The grandmother of time.......2005-08-09
A very special book, that gives ideas for feasts and holidays through the year. Every month begins with a Goddess who tells the story of that month, and then the days of the month follow with feast for all kinds of Goddesses. The nice part of this book is that there are so many different feasts and Goddesses, everyone can find a Goddess of her liking here.
The only thing that I can say against this book is that sometimes the historical information is not correct, due to Budapest's overwhelming feminism, that gets a bit irritating after a while.
Z Budapest is a legend.......2005-05-21
Z Budapest is the founding mother of the women's spirituality movement. Her Dianic craft is a lovely religious tradition which teaches us harmony with nature and human beings. Her book became an instant classic. Please treat yourself to this work.
Z Budapest is a spiritual genius.......2005-04-30
I adore any book by Witchcraft author Z. Budapest. The Grandmother of Time is my all time favorite. She discusses hwo she arrived in the U.S. from her native Hungary. Z. is a witch whose Hungarian ancestors have practiced the craft for centuries. In this book she mixes her own personal herstory with information on Goddesses of the globe. This is a truly loving and fascinating book.

This special pottery combines the traditions of Pueblo and Navajo artists with daring new interpretations by the modern generation. In 280 beautiful color photos, styles inherently connected with old beliefs and Southwest clay are shown to have fresh appearance in the hands of contemporary potters. The book has three easy-to-use sections: Part 1 presents vessels (bowls, plates, ollas, pitchers, and vases) arranged alphabetically by living potters in Acoma, Hopi, Jemez, Navajo, San Felipe, San Ildefonso, San Juan, Santa Ana, Zia and Zuni families. Part 2 presents figures (storytellers and charming animal figures) arranged alphabetically by artists. Part 3 is an unprecedented directory of artists (kachina carvers, jewelry makers, sculptors and potters), in a comprehensive alphabetical format which combines biographies with the makers' personal beliefs to help the reader interpret their work. Book Description
Once websites were simple and easy to navigate, but didn't contain much useful information. Today, they are packed with information and oftentimes are equally packed with complex navigational systems that confuse more than they help.
Many top Web designers have discovered that there's an art to creating sites that are both vastly informative and simply organized. Their trade secrets are revealed here. This book explores the thinking and methodology behind the creation of 24 simple yet content-rich sites. Here, you'll find insights into how each designer began creating a structure, progressing to wire-frames that illustrate each site's internal organization, and on to screen captures that showcase the final product's simple and accessible design.
With tips from successful professionals, as well as inspiring visual examples, this is a book that no Web designer today can afford to be without.
Customer Reviews:
It was good for the short period of time it covered.......2005-09-09
I liked the way the book showed different case studies, starting with the designer's sketches, sitemaps, thoughts, and comments. The biggest problem with the book is that almost all the sites covered are in a style that has not aged well. These sites are mostly the Flash-based mini-sites that barely cover 1/3 of your screen, and are usually not very content heavy. I don't think that's the way sites are being built today, and in the future. So, really, while it's a nice looking book, it has little relevance to today.
Great book...worth the $15.......2005-06-03
I've purchased God knows how many web design/usability/information architecture books over the years and each one offers something unique. This one offers great pictures and clear examples of web site screen shots, sitemaps, design methods, plus much more.
Overall the book is great and worth the $15!
Accepting the challenge of wedding style to usability.......2003-06-21
Whether you are designing professionally or just for your own sites this attractive volume is worth mining for some usefully creative design strategies you may not have considered. Stefan Mumaw not only offers his perspectives on the sites but shares original drafts, schematics, ven diagrams, and other structural strategizing notes of the sites? creators. You may work better in some of these modes than others, but at least you?ll be encouraged to see new possibilities for working through complex designs.
The twenty-four example sites discussed are corporate but certainly not staid - even those required to be quite serious. The clients range from retail mountaineering equipment to winery to interactive education and even to ad agency; the types of issues, the complexity of information, and necessary ?feel? of the site are therefore quite different. But author Mumaw is taking you back to the *process* with which the sites? designers had to match design and structure to content and mission.
Note that this is NOT a book about *how to* make a design function (i.e., no HTML, DHTML, Flash, etc.), but on how to conceptionalize *what* functions / designs one needs: taking a complex business or organizational message or process and putting an attractive and effective face on it. As a designer, you?ll probably admire some of the results more than others, but I think *almost anyone?s* design savy could benefit by seeing how the experienced artists here tackled some interesting design challenges.
the secrets of visually compelling sites.......2002-06-10
This book is a great source and provides some of the most valuable information on how to achieve a clear information architecture that incorporates good usability and is visually compelling. A real must have.
Concepts behind cool minimalist designs.......2002-06-08
This book is a collection of case studies, like Jakob Nielsen's Homepage Usability. The explanations from one chapter to another tends to be repetitive, and not all of the 24 websites are really-really cool, BUT unlike Jakob's book that just attempted to make long distance intepretations, this glossy hard cover book takes us into the design processes complete with each designers' thinkings, from the early paper sketches, the sitemaps, and the final screenshots. And those insights are good enough for me buy this book.
