Where Latin American fiction is concerned, miracles happen every day. Indeed, upon opening a novel written by a Mexican, Chilean, Colombian, or Cuban author, one is slightly disappointed if at least three impossible things don't happen before the opening chapter is over. María Amparo Escandón's first novel fulfills this expectation on its first page when Esperanza Díaz tells her parish priest that San Judas Tadeo appeared to her in her oven window:
He floated toward me, like a piñata dangling from a rope. The grease drippings shone like amber. He looked directly into my eyes. He was so beautiful. His hair was blond and a little curly. He had a beard, just like Jesus Christ. He said, "Your daughter is not dead."
This is a miracle indeed, since Esperanza, a young widow, has recently lost her 12-year-old daughter during a routine tonsillectomy. But when the saint appears to her with his glad tidings, the bereaved mother begins to wonder if her daughter might not have been spirited away by unscrupulous doctors and sold into white slavery. Determined to reclaim her child, Esperanza hits the road, embarking on a picaresque journey that will take her from her little Mexican town to the brothels of Tijuana and eventually to Los Angeles. Along the way she meets a variety of colorful characters including a professional wrestler who just may be the man to change our heroine's mind about never marrying again.

If at times Escandón's blithe tale seems tailor-made for movies, that's because it is. In addition to writing both English and Spanish versions of the novel, she has also authored the screenplay for Esperanza's film debut. In the case of Esperanza's Box of Saints, the cinematic touches nicely complement the book's larger-than-life characters, from best friend and fellow-widow Soledad, or poor Father Salvador, the hapless recipient of Esperanza's occasionally X-rated confessions, to Angel, the keeper of her heart. All in all, this is a book guaranteed to charm and amuse. --Alix Wilber

Book Description

Esperanza's Box of Saints is a magical, humorous, and passion-filled odyssey about a beautiful young widow's search for her missing child -- a mission that takes her from a humble Mexican village to the rowdy brothels of Tijuana and a rarely seen side of Los Angeles. Rescued from turmoil by her favorite saint, Esperanza embarks on a journey that tests her faith, teaches her the ways of the world, and transforms her from a fervently religious innocent to an independent, sexual, and passionately devout woman.

4 out of 5 stars Saints and Sinners.......2007-02-13

Our reading group read this book. It was a wonderful story for discussion!! Esperanza has lost her daughter and believes she is still alive. Her faith combined with the traditions of her culture lead her on an adventure in an effort to find Blanca. She relies on her saints to guide and protect her. Eperanza meets many people who are of questionable reputation but in thier own odd way assist her on her journey. It is a story of grief, faith, superstition and sheer determination. Tragic in some ways and very funny in others.

4 out of 5 stars Put away the oven cleaner, there's magic in that grime........2006-03-14

"Esperanza's Box of Saints" is a sweet, poignant story. The plot is fast-based as it follows Esperanza across Mexico and into the US as she searches for her daughter who she believes has been kidnapped and sold into prostitution.

The novel is billed as being in the magical realism vein, but those elements are very subtle. There are brief episodes of Esperanza's saints talking to her or otherwise giving her signs, and there is the sense that she is somehow protected, or charmed, as she is able to remain relatively unscathed while undergoing some potentially dangerous or degrading experiences. Otherwise, the story seems very grounded in an everyday world which is pious, sordid, beautiful, and freaky.

For me, the main thing that kept the book from achieving 5 stars is that the characters throughout are fairly superficial - which is something that is common to most "picaresque" novels. Even Esperanza, who undergoes some life-altering events, doesn't really experience any character development since she doesn't take time to reflect on what is happening to her even during her confessions to her priest. Actually, I felt that the priest was the most complex, and even compelling, character of the story and was a little disappointed that there weren't more interactions between him and Esperanza, or at least that there wasn't more depth to the interactions they did have.

One of the strengths of the novel are the descriptive narratives. Ms. Escandon really brings to life the world Esperanza inhabits, from the tropical sights and smells of Veracruz, to the barrenness of Tijuana, to the weirdness of LA. If you read this book you'll never be able to look at dirty ovens or rust stains, or smell tamarinds, in the same way again.

5 out of 5 stars sweet, funny, strange, surprising.......2006-02-22

What a great and fun book! Takes about 50 pages to get you hooked because it is just so odd you can't tell what the heck it is! But - keep reading! A quick read, lots of fun, nice to share. Read this one first, then read "Gonzales and Daughter Trucking Company," which is just incredible! ////
(My only cavil is the "Box of Saints" title doesn't really capture the full meaning of "Santitos" - I guess there's no translation.. The story is more about "protective deities" than just any old box of saints....)

4 out of 5 stars the book.......2003-10-18

Esperansa Box of Saints is the best realistic book.Because of all she went throw to find her daughter and thinking she was alive and she did every thing just to find her.Their was so many things that she belive in she was so religios.I really enjoy this book.

4 out of 5 stars Clever and light.......2002-08-09

Maria Escandon continues the literary tradition of magical realism in this journey about a woman determined to find her lost daughter, who she thinks has been kidnapped and sold into prostitution rather than died in the hospital. Definitely not a serious read, this book is charming, light hearted, and only slightly predictable. A good, fun, quick read.

5 out of 5 stars It gave me a warm fuzzy feeling..........2005-08-02

Geralyn Dawson is quickly becoming one of my favorite romance authors. After reading THE BAD LUCK WEDDING CAKE and THE BAD LUCK WEDDING NIGHT, I was dying to read the first installment, THE BAD LUCK WEDDING DRESS. And to my pleasure, I was not disappointed.

THE BAD LUCK WEDDING DRESS tells the story of the seamstress Jenny Fortune who moves to Fort Worth to pursue her dream of dressmaking. Her shop does very well until the superstitious Big Jack Bailey accuses Jenny of making a "bad luck wedding dress," which he claims caused the accidents of two of his daughters when they wore the supposed cursed dress. Jenny's business falls on hard times, for the people of Ft. Worth have no desire to buy bad luck dresses.

Enter widower Trace McBride. The father of the three McBride Menaces, Trace is in need of a mother for his rambunctious daughters. He soon realizes that Jenny would be the best choice for the job. The two agree to marry - Trace gets a mother for his children and Jenny gets financial support after her business does not bring in enough money.

And, of course, the pair fall in love. Jenny helps to heal Trace's demons, and she, in turn, receives the family she's always longed for.

THE BAD LUCK WEDDING DRESS is an adorable story. Trace McBride is the kind of man any woman would dream of having: kind, tender, yet all too human. Jenny is fiesty yet bighearted. The chemistry between the couple leaps off the pages. The McBride Menaces, although naughty, are sweethearts who just need a mother's tender touch. By the end of the novel, you'll be sighing in contentment and brimming with the infamous "warm fuzzing feeling." This book is just that wonderful.

5 out of 5 stars amusing with plenty of pathos western romance .......2005-02-09

Big Jack Bailey blames dressmaker Jenny Fortune for the calamites that beset his three daughters after they wore Miss Fortune's showcase wedding dress at their weddings. Jack believes the designer cursed the dress since she can not find a groom of her own.

Saloon owner Trace McBride, who raises the three female "McBride Menaces" by himself, rents space to Jenny to run her business. His three girls decide that Jenny is the perfect Momma to replace their dead mother; being menaces they will do what it takes to bring their dad and momma Jenny together. With Jack's word of mouth accusing Jenny of seemingly every catastrophe in the region in the last year, her business suffers; who wants to buy a happy occasion gown from a woman who creates curses. To prove her best wedding dress is not a bringer of bad luck, Jenny decides she needs to wear it at her wedding; she agrees with the menaces that Trace is perfect for her, especially since she loves the dope, who refuses to have a second wife after the mistreatment he and the girls received from spouse number one.

This is reprint of a fantastic mid 1990s often amusing with plenty of pathos western romance that grips the heart and soul of readers due to the key cast especially the once burned Trace and his girls. Jenny is a courageous person who sees the three menaces as precocious children needing love, warmth and hugs to help guide them. Fans will appreciate this fine tale that holds up quite well and seek the sequels (THE BAD LUCK WEDDING CAKE and THE BAD LUCK WEDDING NIGHT).

5 out of 5 stars A heartwarming, thoroughly charming romance.......2002-12-20

      ...

Jenny Fortune is struggling to keep her seamstress business afloat. It seems that all three of Big Jack Bailey's daughters have met up with a streak of bad luck after wearing her masterpiece wedding dress. Being a suspicious fool, Big Jack Bailey determines MissFortune (as he dubs her) has placed a curse on the dress and sets out to destroy Jenny and her business.

Trace McBride, local saloon owner, widower and father of three wild girls also known as the "McBride Menaces", rents out the space Jenny uses for her business. Because Trace is extremely busy trying to earn money so he can build his girls' a dream house and gain back his respectability as an Architect the girls begin to spend a lot of time with Jenny and decide she is going to be their new Momma. Continually placing their women weary Father and Jenny in constant contact by their antics the Menaces are determined to force this stubborn pair to fall in love.

Jenny figures the only way to turn her luck around is by getting married in her own "Bad Luck Wedding Dress" and proving to her clientele that the dress and her creations aren't cursed. Trace seems like the most likely candidate, unfortunately, he has been seriously burned by his former wife and is dead set against remarrying. But his daughters, who are even more stubborn than he is, have other plans . . .

This story is filled with endearing characters. There's a wounded hero crying out for love to heal his tortured heart, a charming, understanding and unpredictable heroine and three adorable little girls who add touches of humor and warmth to this terrific love story. If you're like me and like your books brimming over with emotion, sensuality, tenderness and laughter you will cherish this book

4 out of 5 stars Just as entertaining the second time........1998-04-15

Not your typical cookie-cutter romance novel where they fall for each other, hate each other, FINALLY sleep together and then live happily ever after. The typical ending is halfway through the book, and then it gets interesting. We laughed, we cried, we had a wonderful time, this book and I. Even the second time around. Cliches are true too, ya know. And this book makes them refeshing.

If you like Sci-Fi and you like Space, then You've GOT to read Larry Niven's Man Kzin books. He's gotten together with scientists and over 20 writers and created a so-fi world unlike any that's ever been created.

His sci-fi world will continue perpetuating itself long after he's gone because many young writers have bought into his sci-fi version of space as well as MANY older well established ones.

        5 out of 5 stars A fine col;lection by four great authors.......2004-07-13

This has one of the great Poul Anderson's last stories in it, which wopuld alone be a sufficient reason to buy it, plus one by Niven himself. The others are by tried-and-tested favourite Man-Kzin authors Paul Chafe and Hal Colebatch. Between them they add up to a fine portrait of the complex human-Kzin interaction after the Kzinti have to try to come to terms with the fact that they can lose wars.

In Anderson's Pele, they must acknowledge human superiority in space-craft. But can they? Like most of Anderson's stories, has a strong science as well as human element.

In Hal Colebatch's "His Sergeant's Honour", the collection's strongest story, a battered old Kzin sergeant holds the last Kzin fort on Wunderland, a planet long occupied by the Kzinti but now re-conquered by humans, charged with guarding, among others, a human collaborator and a Royal kitten - Vaemar-Riit, last son of the great Chuut-Riit, who is destined to play a big part in "Music-Box" in Man-Kzin 10, "The Wunder War," and, I hope, in adventures to come. He is too good a charater to waste.

In the meantime, old Raargh-Sergeant must choose between death and dishonour. Or Has it become dishonourable to choose death in this strange new time of Monkey victories?

Windows of the Soul, also set in post-occupation Alpha Centauri, is a rather dark detective story in the Raymond Chandler Tradition. Best not say too much for fear of revealing the plot.

Larry Niven's "Fly-by-Night" is a follow-on from Hal Colebatch's "Telepath's Dance" in Man-Kzin VIII - what happened ot the dewscendents of the first rogue telepath when he turned against the Patriarchy and threw in his lot with Selina Guthlac and the humans of the "Angel's Pencil"?

All these stories are taut, pacy and well-written. The Kzinti, or somne of them. show they are more than just dumb killing-machines and are capable of thoughtfulness.

        5 out of 5 stars A correction to the previous reviewer's ethics!.......2004-04-03

I have reviewed this book previously but am having a second bite because I am annoyed by the conduct of the previous reviewer. He claims, apparently trying to dam the dialogue, there is a phrase: "As you known, Raargh Sergeant, we Wunderkzin ..." No such phrase occurs in the book. A human says to a Kzin born on Wunderland "We sometimes call you Wunderkzin ..." I suggest that if the reviewer wishes to pick holes in the style of a particular story he quote the actual words he complains of and not something he has invented. I believe this is related to a thing called ethics, you know, like honesty and truthfulness.

And all thes stories in the book are teriffic! Scream and Leap!

3 out of 5 stars Worth a look for two good stories........2004-01-20

(...)This addition to the long-running Man-Kzin sharecrop series is
worth your attention for two stories: Niven's Own "Fly-by-Night", which
is pretty good, but had an uncredited earlier appearance in (IB)
Asimov's. And newish author Paul Chafe, whose "Windows of the Soul" is
the best of the book, and the one that makes MK-IX worth looking for,
even if you've already seen the Niven. "Windows" starts out as an ARM
police-procedural on Tiamat station, after the brutal murder and
dismemberment of Miranda Holtzman, a 19 year-old student engineer. ARM
Captain Joel Allson develops a hot romance during the investigation --
which veers off into a disturbing political-terrorist operation, and
finishes with a truly nasty twist. Nice. Chafe's had a couple of
previous (unmemorable) appearances (in MK-VII & VIII).

The other two stories are a Poul Anderson novella ("Pele"), set aside
after a slow, dull start, and "His Sergeant's Honor" by Hal Colebatch,
which reads like a novel outline. For a bad, dull novel: "As you know,
        Raargh-Sergeant, we Wunderkzin..." [note 1]

Did I mention the Lurid Baen Cover...? It's Howling Time!

Conclusion: one of the weaker of the Man-Kzin books, but the Chafe is
        first-rate entertainment.

        Happy reading!
        Pete Tillman

Note 1) I see that the old saw "As you know, Bob...", used to lampoon lumpy exposition,
may not be as widely known as I thought.
So: this wasn't a real quote, folks, it was parody.

          Book Description

Explores the connection between ancient druidic worship of a virgin at Chartres and the veneration of the Black Madonna

          • Examines the Virgin Mary’s origins in the pagan worship of the Mother Goddess

          • Identifies Mary with the dominant solar goddess of matriarchal societies

The great cathedral of Chartres is renowned the world over as a masterpiece of High Gothic architecture and for its remarkable stained glass, considered alchemical glass, and its mystical labyrinth. But the sacred foundations of this sanctuary go back to a time long before Christianity when this site was a clearing where druids worshiped a Virgo Paritura: a virgin about to give birth. This ancient meeting place, where all the druids in Gaul gathered once a year, now houses the magnificent Chartres cathedral dedicated both to the Virgin Mary, Mother of God, and to one of the most venerated Black Madonnas in Europe: Our Lady of the Pillar. Coincidence? Hardly, says Jean Markale, whose exhaustive examination of the site traces Chartres’ roots back to prehistoric times and the appeal of the Black Madonna back to the ancient widespread worship of Mother Goddesses such as Cybele and Isis.

Markale contends that the mother and child depicted by the Black Madonna are descended from the image worshipped by the druids of the Virgin forever giving birth. This image is not merely a representation of maternal love--albeit of a spiritual nature. It is a theological notion of great refinement: the Virgin gives birth ceaselessly to a world, a God, and a humanity in perpetual becoming.

5 out of 5 stars A stunning labyrinth of discovery.......2005-05-07

Jean Markale's books are an amazing journey of discovery through philosophy, gnosis, and the wonderful world of esoterica. He is a mystic and a scholar, he is a teacher and a guide. Markale will never force his conclusions upon you, rather he leads you to them and makes you think and feel for yourself. There is no dogma in his work, only wisdom. While he researches with the thorough tenacity of the most intrepid academic, he is never pendantic or stodgy in his conclusions.

There are layers of fascinating historical information within, the kind of detail that isn't found in a library, but that comes from Markale's lifelong love of his French homeland and the folklore and cultures that he was raised in. This is wisdom firsthand. It is experiential and real.

If you have an interest in ancient cultures, goddess worship, the sacred nature of the cathedrals and those who built them, and the path of Gnosis, there is much to love in this book. But don't expect a linear, typical journey. Markale is a genius, and he would never do anything that obvious.

Read it, put it away and read it a few months later. You will see something within it that you did not see before.

4 out of 5 stars cookbook works as a good guide for venice restaurants.......2001-10-17

I purchased the book knowing that It would be mostly used
as a sort of restaurant guide. The recipes are shown with photos.
It gave me an idea of the type of food the restaurant specializes
in and wheather one might enjoy eating there. My next trip to venice is during christmas 2001,I plan to go to at least two or three of the restaurants in the book that I probably wouldn't have tried otherwise. That alone is worth the price especially if one or more restaurants is a true"find".

Another spectacularly beautiful book from the Paris-based publisher Assouline, Antiquaires traces the history of the antiques-dealing profession from its origins in the 16th century to the present day. From the friperie merchant and upholsterer of the ancien régime to today's dealers in antiques and second-hand furniture, antiques dealers remain the middlemen between the serious collector and the past. They are magicians who cast a spell upon the detritus of times past, turning them into treasure-troves prized by the rich and powerful. This book is a celebration of that magic.

It is a challenge indeed to evoke the Parisian antiques dealers and their history, but author Jean-Louis Gaillemin is up to it. The owners of modern art galleries who monitor the work of their artists are actors in the history of art, but antiques dealers, like collectors, create the history of taste, a history that is more subtle, more discreet, and certainly more subjective. While the collectors may sometimes allow a peep inside their doors, antiques dealers are a more secretive lot. Very little has been written about them, and their memoirs have usually proven more anecdotal (though humorous) than useful. Their stock is more ephemeral by definition, and even their large numbers discourage the would-be chronicler.

Gaillemin was conscious of the gaps in this area of study and the choices he was forced to make. Priority is given to "general" dealers who combine objects, furnishings, paintings, and sculptures, to the detriment of the specialists, but that's a minor quibble. Superb photographs done especially for this book capture the brilliance and grandeur of the showrooms, while the thoroughly documented text, rich with cultural references and enlivened by interviews with current leading dealers, provides a solid introduction to the present-day defenders of the great French tradition. And the exhaustive listing of the dealers, their specialties, and their addresses at the back of the book serves as a tantalizing aperitif for anyone preparing for that oft-delayed sojourn to the City of Light. --Charles Decker

          Book Description

Leading French expert on decorative arts Jean-Louis Gaillemin recounts the fascinating history of antiques starting with how this profession was born and established in Europe and it evolution from the French Revolution through today's most important dealers in Paris. The author provides a tantalizing account of how, whne and why, over the past two centuries, Paris, the world capital of the antiques market, attributed (or denied) certain antiques and antiques dealers their popularity and reputation. Complementing this histroical account, the book includes a practical guide which lists the addresses of Parisian dealers by district and speciality along with key museums. Luxurious, richly illustrated and informative, this book is an essential item for both amateur and professional antiques collectors, and all those taken by the irresistable allure of the world of antiques and the Parisian market in particular.

5 out of 5 stars Antiques Dealing as an Art Form.......2006-06-09

Jean-Louis Gallemin has created a book, Antiquaries: The Finest Antiques Dealers in Paris, that not only will please the curiosity and the eye of those who love French antiques, it is also one of the most informative texts on the history of dealing in antiques. Far from a dry dissertation defending those who have gathered antiques from neglected estates (or those with even more intrigue!), this book is a detailed history of antiques dealing in Paris with the generous and luxuriously complete directory of Paris antiques dealers today.

The publishing house of Assouline engaged the services of photographer Laziz Hamani to capture the myriad articles of furniture, art and decorative accessories that in the hands of the fine dealers visited by Gaillemin. The photographs are not only documentary but are also a form of still life: Hamani understands the play of light on the works selected and each photograph is suggestive of a fine old painting.

This very elegantly presented volume serves as a guide to the history of an old profession, a guide to antiques, and a lovely introduction to the particular haunts of Paris that quietly boast its past. Grady Harp, June 06

4 out of 5 stars Antiques Now and Then.......2006-02-01

This is an English translation of an original French text. A rare look at the history of antiques dealing and its European origins. The book is beautiful to look at. The photography is exquisite and the binding excellent. The book comes in two halves, really. The first half is a history of the trade, while the second half is a review of some of the more prestigious antiques dealers of France of recent and current history. All involved are of the high end variety with quality of work-and inferred prices-not for the faint of heart. If you are interested in European antiques you want this.

5 out of 5 stars A joy for the eyes and for the mind.......2001-01-06

Jean-Louis Gaillemin is a great connoisseur of antiques and in this book, where he tells the story of the great antique dealers of Paris, he shares with the reader his enthousiasm for objects and furniture who speak the language of the past. It is a sort of a sentimental journey in the fascination of bygone ages, where everybody can feel at ease in magnificent rooms and "galeries". Reading the rich texts of Gaillemin and looking at the lavish photographs of Laziz Hamani, one has the sensation to be in these splendid places. A great book written with style by a master of style.

5 out of 5 stars the nicest patterns I've ever seen in a book.......2005-04-24

As another reviewer noted, these aren't (for the most part) quick-to-stitch designs, but don't be scared off (though there are some items such as a bookmark, sachet bag, etc.). There are bears, birdhouses, hearts, houses, flowers, wedding items, a couple Christmas designs, and children. They are attractive designs with enough detail that they are attractive when finished, but they are not highly time-consuming designs, and scanning the book, I could not find any that you couldn't readily complete with ordinary floss. A rather classy book with a little something for everybody.

                            5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!.......2004-04-27

This book features absolutely gorgeous charts in a nice variety of styles. The best part, to me, was that the charts are flawless - something you can only achieve by stitching each chart to test it, and someone has obviously done that for this book. I just completed the sampler of rows of houses as a gift for my mother-in-law, and it turned out beautiful.

Fair warning: this is not for the beginner cross-stitcher! But if you have advanced beyond the easy kits and want to really create some art, this book is for you.

3 out of 5 stars Beautiful but hard.......2003-02-20

These are beautiful pictures, but difficult. If your like me and need fast projects because of small children, forget it. They use lots of beads and special threads. I think its great for your library. But these are very long and specialized, detailed graphs. I have to tell you I was happy that I bought it, but I will not be using it soon, some day when I have more time. There are some beautiful wedding samplers, pictures of flowers and no holiday special pictures, which I loved. If you like to work with beads and special threads go for it, if your a simple cross stitch lady like me with no time, wait until you have more time.

I admit when I saw the Better Homes and Garden in the title I wrinkled my nose and thought it would be an average, cute book. But I was wrong.

Not only is it a well thought out book with excellent text, photographs and step by step, easy to follow directions but it is a book with ideas for any lifestyle or home decor. My favorites being the rooster on pages 21-23 and the Gloria Sampler on page 29, Mothers Sampler on page 42-43, the various wedding samplers that begin on page 44. I love and am doing the Consider the Lilies piece from pages 78-81 and will soon start the Flower Shop (pages 82-87), and the Family Tree from pages 141-145, which anybody interested in genealogy would love.

I am so glad I bought this book and the Amazon.com price is wonderful !!![...]

5 out of 5 stars Definitely Some Pretty Stitching Going On With This Book!!.......2003-01-11

I don't usually take the time to write reviews, but I had to for this BH&G gem, especially since one hasn't been written as of yet. SOMEone has to let cross stitch fanatics know what they're missing! :)

This book is chock full of gorgeous charts for a variety of topics such as nuptials, love, home, samplers, florals, and hearts, just to name a few. Each one is printed in color and accompanied by clear instructions, as well as a materials and supplies list. In addition, each project has been beautifully stitched and photographed for inspiration.

There's a particular project I consider just one my many favorites, as well as probably the most challenging, called "THE FLOWER SHOP," in which the design is worked on two pieces of fabric and utilizes a combination of several different stitches (besides those of cross stitch) to arrive at a pretty spectacular piece of work. I was both excited, and I must admit, a tad intimidated to try it. If a cross stitch book can arouse this type of reaction out of me, I consider it a definite "keeper" for my library.

"...STITCHING PRETTY..." also contains patterns with instructions for the use of metallic and silk threads, a variety of beads, ribbon, etc. Speaking for myself, I love it when cross stitch books include patterns which call for the use of these items as part of the design, for they only enhance what I am capable of creating with just thread alone.

I happen to adore books with projects dedicated to the different skill levels of counted cross-stitch, especially those geared toward the more experienced stitchers. Very rarely do I see cross stitch books containing patterns for intermediate/advanced stitchers and in my opinion, there should be a lot more of them.

If you're brand new to cross stitching and are just learning the basics, though it DOES include "how-to" illustrations for all of the stitches required to do each project, this book will still probably be a bit too advanced for you. However, if you plan on sticking with it, please purchase the book because I'm sure it will serve as nothing less than an inspiration for you to continue with the craft.

If you're already an intermediate to advanced stitcher, purchasing this book will result in smiles and excitement, as the most troublesome thought you might have is trying to figure out which design you'd like to stitch first!

P.S. Merely just a suggestion...with each chosen pattern, you may want to copy it on a photo copier prior to stitching. It's a very nice quality book and I'm sure you won't want to "age" it prematurely with constant handling. Happy Stitching!! :)

The images in this production are to Celtic illustration what imitation crab meat is to the real thing. Sad to say the quality of the images are just a couple of steps above cartoon art. Also disappointing is the fact that the images were scanned at 300 x 300 dpi. In this day and age, when many printers are cranking out 2,500 dpi, this low level of scanning leaves a lot to be desired. I have purchased other Dover products in the past and have been very pleased. The purchase of this book is one I regret.

This is not just a book, it is a document! Also a testify to quiet this woman who claims to have been at Marilyn Monroe's funeral! Her name is June DiMaggio and she is nowhere seen in the well known group of mourners! Thank you so much, Mr. Wiener! You spoke from beyond, and helped me in defending the legend! You surely had respect and admiration for Miss Monroe. I read this in your preword. I look at your book each August 5th and feel as I am there. Your amazing photos speak louder than a fast and fake story, made up and printed in the Playboy! Highly recommended and worth each $ !!!

This is a rare book, only 275 of us can hold it... I think this is a perfect book, because the autor is respecting her model until the end. Don't think about finding some photos of MM dead body. You will only find pictures for the serious Marilyn Monroe collector. Nothing sensational, just a way to follow her a last time.

I own this book in uncirculated condition. I read it once and put it back into the box. This book will be extremely valuable in the years to come due to the extraordinarily few copies produced. I just put it away in my collection so it can remain in the same condition (new) as I acquired it. When I am old and gray I will put it up on EBAY and fund my retirement.

5 out of 5 stars Marilyn: a Hollywood Farewell: The Death & Funeral of MM.......2002-03-15

I found this book unique not only when I first reviewed and decided on purchasing it for my extensive Marilyn Monroe library collection, but, for its' contents. Basically, the way the book was arranged chronologically through each step by step event on Monroe's funeral procession. You see the uniformed officers (who are later to be identified as "Pinkerton" detective agency guards) that were instructed by Joe DiMaggio to prevent any people (who were not invited by DiMaggio and Monroe's Step-sister, Bernice Miracle from entering the cemetery during Monroe's funeral). The book is well illustrated, and unlike most of the other Marilyn Monroe books that I have, due to its' subject matter has a tendency towards the morose. Again, this book is very unique and will not be something that one can easily review and shelve away. I really got a sad and seriousness about it after reading and carefully reviewing it. The reader will also get a glimpse of "Monroe" in the morgue. However, the photographer, "Leigh Weiner" states that he did have the opportunity of photographing the "late" star's nude body on the marble slab but reserved and maintained a true respect for her by not including and publishing her photos in her final state of death. In closing, this book is and should be considered the final closing chapter in the tragically short lived career of the most unappreciated, envied, loved and missed movie legend of the 20th and without a doubt through the 21st century.

5 out of 5 stars Marilyn A Hollywood farewell and Forever.......2000-10-04

I was waiting for a long time this book, is a sad book about the death and funeral of Marilyn Monroe, one of the most famous persons in the world. It is a photograpy book, very serious and respectful. I felt bizarre when I received the book because I was in Westwood Memorial Park is August this year. I saw a lonely grave in a quiet place. It was a intimate feeling for Marilyn. The cemetery had gronwed a lot in 38 years. This book let me know who everything happened at that time. I recomend this book, it is hard to find but no impossible, thanks to Amazon.com
