Book Description

"Stunning...Maryse Conde's imaginative subversion of historical records forms a critque of contemporary American society and its ingrained racism and sexism."
THE BOSTON SUNDAY GLOBE
At the age of seven, Tituba watched as her mother was hanged for daring to wound a plantation owner who tried to rape her. She was raised from then on by Mama Yaya, a gifted woman who shared with her the secrets of healing and magic. But it was Tituba's love of the slave John Indian that led her from safety into slavery, and the bitter, vengeful religion practiced by the good citizens of Salem, Massachusetts. Though protected by the spirits, Tituba could not escape the lies and accusations of that hysterical time.
As history and fantasy merge, Maryse Conde, acclaimed author of TREE OF LIFE and SEGU, creates the richly imagined life of a fascinating woman.

5 out of 5 stars I Tituba.......2007-07-30

This was a wonderfully written book, I felt as though Tituba wrote herself. I was immediately taken in and couldn't wait to finish, but after finishing...wanted to read more. A great read!

5 out of 5 stars A work of art.......2006-10-30

I truly loved this book, I sat and read it through in one day - and I'll probably read it again. I don't do that often. "I, Tituba" does not claim to be a historical treatise - what it is, is a work of insightful imagination. I've been to Salem, I've read just about everything there is to read about the witch trials, and it is true that Tituba gets short shrift. It's also true that there is probably very little in the way of documentation to prove anything about her. It's the nature of the beast called Slavery. That anyone cared enough to give her form and substance is a tribute to her story and her life. There is far too much invisible history for very similar reasons. May there be more authors with the craft and the wisdom to bring it to life.

3 out of 5 stars Falters in spots.......2006-05-29

The book seemed too heavy on the isms. For example, the insertion of Hester Prynne seemed unnecessary, clumsy and contrived to the point of breaking the spell.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant.......2006-02-25

I would say that this has to be one of the most fascinating studies of Tituba's life; it certainly has helped me to understand this powerful woman and what her involvement had been in the Salem incident. When I was a young girl, and I had tried to find detailed information about Tituba's life there were only rumors on top of rumors, but with the author's thorough research into Salem and the lives of slaves, she certainly breathes life into a character whose life is otherwise unknown.

Brilliant? Fascinating? These words hardly cover it: amazing, is more like it!

1 out of 5 stars Another mistaken book about Salem...........2005-03-04

This book is based on a common mistake about Tituba, namely that she was African. After all, everyone associates slaves in America with Africa; Tituba is also described as 'black.' However, 'black' in the lexicon of the Puritans meant 'Indian.' Rev. Samuel Parris, who owned Tituba and hence was in a position to know, refers to her in legal documents as an Indian. Modern scholars have concluded that Tituba came from one of the Caribbean Indian groups or from South America. Moreover, it has long been known that the witchcraft she can be proved to have practiced was common English magic. Finally, the notion that there was some group of girls being instructed in witchcraft by Tituba stems from a careless reading of a remark in John Hale's account of the Salem episode. Hale wrote that one of the afflicted girls indicated to him that she had been trying to find out her future husband's occupation; Hale then mentions an acquaintance (not necessarily one of the afflicted girls) who had indulged in the same practice. Tituba is never mentioned by Hale in this context and only two unassociated women practitioners of magic are alluded to.

Former Secret Service agent Alex Stone was the best of the best, so impersonating missing foreign dignitary Thomas Barde seemed easy. Convincing the world that rough-and-rowdy Melusine Brand was actually Katerina, Thomas's ultrafeminine bride and the president of Tantilla's beloved daughter, was another story. And while Alex was no stranger to difficult assignments, hiding his history with Melusine bordered on impossible.

Physically, Melusine could have been Katerina's twin, but the resemblance ended there -- something Alex was grateful for when their simple plan turned dangerous. As they tangled with terrorists in the Texas desert, Alex wondered not only whether a future without Melusine was worth living, but would they survive to see any future at all?

Billions of years ago, an alien race known as the Progenitors began the genetically engineered techniques by which non-intelligent creatures are given intelligence by one of the higher races in the galaxy. Once "Uplifted," these creature must serve their patron race before they, in turn, can Uplift other races. Human intelligence, which developed by itself (and brought about the Uplifting of chimpanzees and dolphins), is an affront to the aliens who plan an attack, threatening a human experiment aimed at producing the next Uplift. Such is the premise of this novel, which won the 1988 Hugo Award.

      Book Description

David Brin's Uplift novels are among the most thrilling and extraordinary science fiction ever written.  Sundiver, Startide Rising, and The Uplift War--a New York Times bestseller--together make up one of the most beloved sagas of all time.  Brin's tales are set in a future universe in which no species can reach sentience without being "uplifted" by a patron race.  But the greatest mystery of all remains unsolved: who uplifted humankind?

As galactic armadas clash in quest of the ancient fleet of the Progenitors, a brutal alien race seizes the dying planet of Garth.  The various uplifted inhabitants of Garth must battle their overlords or face ultimate extinction.  At stake is the existence of Terran society and Earth, and the fate of the entire Five Galaxies.  Sweeping, brilliantly crafted, inventive and dramatic, The Uplift War is an unforgettable story of adventure and wonder from one of today's science fiction greats.

4 out of 5 stars One logic flaw.......2007-08-29

There's one logic flaw I just couldn't get over. Why send dolphins into space who will potentially suffer from psychotic breaks and threaten the whole crew? i.e if one dolphin is in danger and needs to be rescued it can send out a distress call that will cause all the others to risk themselvels in a suicidal attempt to rescue that dolphin. Basically they beach themselves. Otherwise great books.

5 out of 5 stars The Wolfling Clan.......2000-03-11

David Brin's Uplift series extends across six books now - Sundiver, Startide Rising, The Uplift War, and the Brightness Trilogy. The premise is simple: the universe is not only full of life, it is old beyond belief, and as caste-ridden as India. Since the fabled Progenitors, one race after another has "uplifted" other races, by direct genetic manipulation or selective breeding. Each race has it patron, each has its clients who must discharge an multi-millenium period of servitude as repayment for their uplift, and each aspires to its own clan.

Except the earthling clan, which stumbles into this universe just before the beginning of Sundiver. And not only do the earthlings not have a patron, they have cheekily uplifted neo-dolphins and neo-chimps, creating their own client races. They are wolflings. It's an moral affront and a religious insult to other races that can trace their lines back a billion years.

So when one of the earthling ships, captained by a neo-dolphin and crewed by the three earthling peoples, stumbles across evidence of the fabled progenitors, the race that started uplift, well, it's just too much for the older races. Interstellar chaos ensues. Religious, economic and social wars break out, almost all of it aimed at the wolfling earth clan.

The earthling ship is chased across the five universes. The first book, Startide Rising is the story of the ship's attempt to hide itself on an oceanic world. A gripping plot, vivid characters, aliens that are really alien, and neo-dolphins that are everything you could want them to be. It's a wonderful story, with a stand up and cheer ending.

The second book, The Uplift War is the story of just one minor consequence of the earthlings discovery. Essentially the story of a counter-revolution, it's the triumph of low technology against high technology on an ecologically damaged world, of a band of Tymbrimi aliens, neo-chimps and humans against aliens who are really and truly alien. Told from the shifting perspectives of Tymbrimi, bad guy Jiburu, human and chimp, the story is clever, devious and captivating.

Brin's physicist training shines through his writing. But in Brin's hands the science is a means rather than an end. There's not the razzle-dazzle of the old pulps, or the machine gun pacing of, say, Ian Banks, but instead highly satisfying yarns with subtle themes, good plotting and strong characterizations. Of course the dolphins speak in haikus; how else would they talk?

This two in one volume has the Uplift Universe stories to start with. If the loose ends don't force you to read the Brightness Trilogy next, well, we _really_ don't like the same books. Highly recommended.

      5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......1998-11-06

Not much to say, other than these were excellent books. I would recommend them to any true fan of Science Fiction.

      5 out of 5 stars literally UpLifting!.......1998-07-04

I've placed an order for this remarkable book.

Although both 'Startide Rising' and 'The UpLift War' are stand-alone books - which means that one can read the series backwards, as have I at times, and still wonder who's going to survive, and WHY and HOW - they are magnificent reading one after another. The very Concept of up-lifting explains quite a bit - and leaves questions open for later books and disscusions. for example: only the Brin family likely knows why the Tymbrimi are marsupial humanoid elf-like beings - _can_ one up-lift a myth? are the Caltmour the dragons of legend?

So MANY questions. And only TWO ways to know the definitive answers:

      1) read the books. 2) your name is David Brin!

5 out of 5 stars A interesting version of the future........1998-03-05

Brin's best works together in one novel. These two books are what made Brin. 'The Postman' is bland compared to these. Genetic engineering at its best.

But now humans, chimps, and their alien allies on Garth are being held hostage in a conflict that could affect the fate of the entire Five Galaxies. As a ragtag group of freedom fighters wage a desperate guerilla war, their only hope for victory lies in unravelling the elusive truth behind the legend of a hidden native species that could prove a powerful ally. George Wilsons brilliant narration conveys the awe-inspiring wonder of this amazing book.

5 out of 5 stars A classic of the field.......2006-09-30

Despite debate, if one approaches this book with an open mind, one finds alot of evidence supporting the idea of Celtic Shamanism. This is a remarkable cross cultural survey as well of shamanism. It's well researched and presented. I love it so much, I am on my third copy. It's a classic of this admittedly narrow field.

5 out of 5 stars More history than instructional..........2006-08-18

...but that doesn't mean that this isn't a top notch book. I found it to be an exceptional source of information about shamanism in general and celtic shamanic beliefs in particular. I highly recommended it to all with an interest in such subjects. IF, however, you are looking for a "how to" book, this is not what you are looking for.

5 out of 5 stars The Metaphor in the Humanity.......2005-04-01

On my shelf of shamanic titles, this one sits prominently figured. Cowan presents the traditional fantastic experiences of the shaman in an amazingly perceivable framework. His depiction of archetypes in well-known myths and legends opens one to the ability to read all things symbolically, thus, as the dynamic spiritual presences that they are. His telling of olde tales connects their spirit with a modern audience.

                      4 out of 5 stars Packed!.......2004-06-04

Lots of good solid information here. I must admit I like his writing style as well. Excellent material, well presented!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful intro to Celtic mysticism.......2003-08-29

I first became interested in shamanism after reading books by core-shamanic practioners Michael Harner and Sandra Ingerman. While these books described a way of relating to and healing with the natural world that I have always longed for, my heart yearned for a practice more connected with my long-forgotten European ancestry. Soon I found this book, which addresses the issues of recovering native European Celtic traditions. I agree that it's a wonderful introduction to Celtic mysticism and spirituality. Cowan covers a wide variety of topics to "pull" from and trigger remembrance. Regarding the witchcraft issue, black and white magic has been a part of every native tradition since the beginning of time. Certainly the inappropriate use of magic figures prominently in our collective soul wounds, and needs to be considered.

Type in Motion: Innovations in Digital Graphics is a high-energy, brilliantly colored coffee-table book--and a serious exploration of the latest trends in type design in commercial and fine art as well.

The book is an intensely visual guide to the variety of type designs in today's media. It examines movies such as Prospero's Books and The Pillow Book, where beautiful calligraphy plays a large role, and movies such as Mission Impossible and Good Will Hunting, where the titles are produced with careful attention to typography. The writers also explore type design in commercials and documentaries. A variety of pieces they present were originally delivered on CD-ROM, Web site, video, book, or other medium--there's even a sculptural toy--and include interactive press kits, experimental design showcases, digital opera, interactive calendars, and scientific research on type.

Throughout, captions explain the design, interface, and animation of each project, and pictures illuminate the nature of each. If you're a serious artist who enjoys manipulating type in ever more creative ways, this book will serve as an inspiration for your own work. And even if you simply dabble in art and appreciate the lovely ways in which typography and script can deliver a message, Type in Motion will be a source of great reading and viewing pleasure for you. --Kathleen Caster

                                    Book Description

The most advanced typographic work from around the world, from one-person experimental studios to university-based research groups.

It has been six years since the publication of the internationally successful Type in Motion, the first book to present an overview of animated digital typography. Six years is a long time in the digital world, and creative innovation in motion graphics continues unabated.

Over eighty projects are presented here in detail and arranged into five chapters that address particular issues facing today's designers. "Identifying" looks at kinetic typography's role in branding through media such as television identities, program titles, and transition sequences. The delivery of information about a product, service, or event through a typographic message is considered in "Informing." Stitching together word, image, and sound to create stories and establish a context, "Storytelling" addresses issues of narrative, in which the designer establishes the framework but the user creates the story. "Traveling" focuses on the user, from Web site navigation to chat rooms. "Speculating" features a wide spectrum of experimental projects in type and letter design, exploring new ideas, functions, and methods of communication.

Type in Motion 2 raises visual communication and motion graphics to new levels and captures the true spirit of innovation and imagination in the contemporary design scene. Over 300 illustrations in color and black and white.

4 out of 5 stars Good addition to design knowledge.......2007-09-30

This is book is an addition to the motion design workflow where you can get to know how to use typography in your day-to-day work related to broadcast and motion graphics animation. It certainly has good tips if you want to improve upon the area of typography usage in animation.

1 out of 5 stars Not at all useful........2006-11-29

Having seen Matt Woolman's "Moving Type", which is a great resource, I had hoped for similar and updated content in covering this design area. This is a very disappointing book as it seems it is a compendium of advertising for the motion design houses out there with very little to offer aside from screenshots of various projects. You are better off just visiting the websites of the companies covered for free with the added benefit of seeing QuickTimes of the TYPE IN MOTION.

I saw the first Type in Motion book, and it looked pretty interesting, so I bought the Type in Motion 2 because I thought all this cool stuff has happened between the first and second book. Well, the examples aren't that exciting and the layout of the book doesn't make them more so. If you're looking for inspiration, you won't find it here.

                                    4 out of 5 stars A great resource.......2005-12-14

Type in Motion 2 is the follow-up to Mark Woolman's original Type in Motion, the first book to present an overview of animated digital typography when it was published over six years ago. In this volume over 80 projects, from the most advanced studios around the world, are presented in a beautiful book bordering on sensory overload. Over 1300 images of animated typographic images from the Internet, film and television almost come jumping off the pages at the reader. With the sections "Identifying," "Informing," "Storytelling," "Traveling" and "Speculating," the author exhibits numerous projects specific to those topics - frame by frame in most cases - and explains what was needed by the client, the concept to be produced, the process of creation, and the end result. For a designer like myself, specializing in static graphic imagery, Type in Motion 2 is a great lesson in considering the option of potential movement in an image being creating, how that motion might be executed, what movements could be applied, and how the final imagery will impact the communication of the client's message. Those with experience in motion graphics, or desiring a career in the field, will find many examples of challenging concepts, incredible design solutions, and inspiring "eye-candy" in this book of innovative work. - Jeff Fisher, writer of bLog-oMotives and "Logo Notions" on CreativeLatitude.com

2 out of 5 stars This book is missing a key component.......2003-08-29

The title of this book is "Type in Motion," but it's missing just that - type in motion. In order for this book to be really useful, it should have a DVD or CD with image files that can be reviewed. Instead there is nothing but screen grabs, which is interesting but not especially helpful.

                                    I wouldn't bother.
