It's 1960, and 65-year-old Camila Ureña decides to join the New World. Castro's new world, that is, which she has been following on the news with a heated excitement she hasn't felt for years. Forced into early retirement from her 20-year post as a Spanish teacher among the perky white girls of Vassar College, Camila faces a choice: whether to move to Florida and live down the block from her best friend or to fly over Florida and into Havana where her brothers live--and thereby land in a place of upheaval and hungry ghosts. The hungriest ghost of all is Camila's mother, Salomé Ureña, whose poems became inspirational anthems for a short-lived revolution in the late-19th-century Dominican Republic.Based in fact, In the Name of Salomé alternates between Camila's story and her mother's. Camila's chapters are written in the third person, Salomé's in the first. By calling Camila "she," Alvarez alienates her within the text--as if in her attic at Vassar she is floating outside herself in an America that does not belong to her. In contrast, Salomé's chapters vibrate with life and tears and melodrama. Through the alternating voices, which Alvarez handles masterfully, the reader comes to grasp Camila's longing for the color and music of her mother's lost world--how the meek daughter wishes "she" could become the "I" of her mother's revolutionary and passionate life as a poet, which began under a pseudonym, Herminia, in a local political paper:
Each time there was a new poem by Herminia in the paper, Mamá would close the front shutters of the house and read it in a whisper to the rest of us. She was delighted with the brave Herminia. I felt guilty keeping this secret from her, but I knew if I told her, all her joy would turn to worry.Yet for Salomé, her pseudonym allows her to become the voice of a country, "and with every link she cracked open for la patria, she was also setting me free." --Emily White
Book Description
In her most ambitious work since In the Time of Butterflies, Julia Alvarez tells the story of a woman whose poetry inspired one Caribbean revolution and of her daughter whose dedication to teaching strengthened another.Camila Henriquez Urena is about to retire from her longtime job teaching Spanish at Vassar College. Only now as she sorts through family papers does she begin to know the woman behind the legend of her mother, the revered Salome Urena, who died when Camila was three.
In stark contrast to Salome, who became the Dominican Republic's national poet at the age of seventeen, Camila has spent most of her life trying not to offend anybody. Her mother dedicated her life to educating young women to give them voice in their turbulent new nation; Camila has spent her life quietly and anonymously teaching the Spanish pluperfect to upper-class American girls with no notion of revolution, no knowledge of Salome Urena.
Now, in 1960, Camila must choose a final destination for herself. Where will she spend the rest of her days? News of the revolution in Cuba mirrors her own internal upheaval. In the process of deciding her future, Camila uncovers the truth of her mother's tragic personal life and, finally, finds a place for her own passion and commitment.
Julia Alvarez has won a large and devoted audience by brilliantly illuminating the history of modern Caribbean America through the personal stories of its people. As a Latina, as a poet and novelist, and as a university professor, Julia Alvarez brings her own experience to this exquisite story.

good book underneath.......2004-06-05
Having said that, this book was still a valuable Tarl Cabot book that continued the story line and had many good parts that warranted the overall 5 stars.
For one it starts out with the oddest mystery. The Priest kings want Tarl dead. What this means we don't know certainly it might mean that Misk, Tarl's loyal brave and modest Priest king friend is dead and there was change in regime. Or perhaps it's another Kurii trick.
Either way Tarl ends up fleeing Port Kar and going incognito a while. Without giving away the details he ends up investigating a strange city with the help of some Players (actors/musician/Kaissa players) caste of Gor. It seems as if a Kur is being held there. We later find out this Kur's true story and the Cos/Tyros plot to finally conquer Ar begins.
The side characters are particulary good in this Gor novel. Scormus of Ar and Boots and the actor that plays the General of Ar at the end are great. Boots when he is not sprouting slave dogma is probably one of the funniest characters Norman has created in the cycle.
Just plain excelent.......1999-11-09

The Domain Book of Intuitive Home Design: How to Decorate Using Your Personality Type
Judy George Manufacturer: Clarkson Potter ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items: ASIN: 0517707632 Release Date: 1998-11-03 |
Amazon.com
If you've always liked formal, high-ceilinged rooms with classic period furniture that some would call "stiff," or gravitate to cozy, intimate rooms with an interesting array of travel memorabilia that your neatnik friends might refer to as "clutter," there's a reason. The Domain Book of Intuitive Home Design identifies four basic personality types--the Visionary, the Artisan, the Idealist, and the Adventurer--that correspond to four very different decorating styles. The book begins with a 20-question "Intuitive Personality Quiz" to help readers classify themselves using the four broadly drawn archetypes. Then the fun begins, as a question is posed: "What would you do with a naked sofa?" A basic sofa is shown with an all-out treatment for each personality type: satin pillows and classic flanking end tables for the Visionary; printed cotton pillows, a teddy bear, and an afghan for the Artisan; sleek leather coverings and a bare floor for the Idealist; four contrasting cloth coverings and leopard-print and shag pillows for the Adventurer. Each personality type and its preferences are described in detail, and then a room-by-room section shows how each type can implement a decorating plan that shows off its preferences to advantage. Shopping lists and mini-exercises display an element of playfulness--after all, decorating is supposed to be fun! And the "split personalities" pages at the end help dual types integrate their preferences into an interesting, cohesive whole. If you haven't yet managed to settle into a style that's really right for you, this book will show you how to plan rooms you'll feel comfortable in.Book Description
Do you love bright, airy rooms with sheer curtains that allow light to flood in? Or are you attracted to intimate, jewel-box rooms with rich fabrics and colors? Are you most comfortable when nestled among pretty objects to touch and enjoy, or do you want your home to be free from all clutter?Customer Reviews:
Unique approach to style.......2006-05-19
Entertaining.......2003-10-03
Disappointed.......2002-12-17
I think that people are much better off choosing their own unique style of interior decoration then trying to have it dictated to them by a quiz. Sometimes, interior decoration is about breaking the rules and going with your own intuition.
Recommendation: There are other books that will give you better guidance towards developing your own style. Good luck!
Other Resources:
The Ultimate Home Style Guide by Katherine Sorrell is the best book on the broadest range of styles that I have seen. Almost all styles are represented here with enough details on colors, fabrics, and other style elements to create the looks yourself.
The Architecture and Design Library series are excellent primers on different design styles. Each book focusess on one style, such as eastern style, Arts & Crafts, French Country, and Retro Modern to name just a few.
Color in Your Home by T. Evelegh has one of the best primers on how to use color. The photos are beautiful. The style is modern country and/or feminine (but not overdone) color schemes.
Color Design File by Geddes-Brown also does a great job of covering the basics, and there are beautiful photos. I like the fact that there are pockets for swatches and magazine inspirations. This book shows primarily Loft style.
Must buy! Why? Simply because it was so inciteful..........2000-04-28

Not even a personal interview. Well, I can't blame the gentlemen for keeping away. My 8yr. old daughter could have done better.
I spent £20 on this book. Still, it helps me to sleep on restless nights, and some of the Carreras photos are cute.
I can't wait until Monica publishes her expose.
