It's 1960, and 65-year-old Camila Ureña decides to join the New World. Castro's new world, that is, which she has been following on the news with a heated excitement she hasn't felt for years. Forced into early retirement from her 20-year post as a Spanish teacher among the perky white girls of Vassar College, Camila faces a choice: whether to move to Florida and live down the block from her best friend or to fly over Florida and into Havana where her brothers live--and thereby land in a place of upheaval and hungry ghosts. The hungriest ghost of all is Camila's mother, Salomé Ureña, whose poems became inspirational anthems for a short-lived revolution in the late-19th-century Dominican Republic.

Based in fact, In the Name of Salomé alternates between Camila's story and her mother's. Camila's chapters are written in the third person, Salomé's in the first. By calling Camila "she," Alvarez alienates her within the text--as if in her attic at Vassar she is floating outside herself in an America that does not belong to her. In contrast, Salomé's chapters vibrate with life and tears and melodrama. Through the alternating voices, which Alvarez handles masterfully, the reader comes to grasp Camila's longing for the color and music of her mother's lost world--how the meek daughter wishes "she" could become the "I" of her mother's revolutionary and passionate life as a poet, which began under a pseudonym, Herminia, in a local political paper:

Each time there was a new poem by Herminia in the paper, Mamá would close the front shutters of the house and read it in a whisper to the rest of us. She was delighted with the brave Herminia. I felt guilty keeping this secret from her, but I knew if I told her, all her joy would turn to worry.
Yet for Salomé, her pseudonym allows her to become the voice of a country, "and with every link she cracked open for la patria, she was also setting me free." --Emily White

Book Description

In her most ambitious work since In the Time of Butterflies, Julia Alvarez tells the story of a woman whose poetry inspired one Caribbean revolution and of her daughter whose dedication to teaching strengthened another.

Camila Henriquez Urena is about to retire from her longtime job teaching Spanish at Vassar College. Only now as she sorts through family papers does she begin to know the woman behind the legend of her mother, the revered Salome Urena, who died when Camila was three.

In stark contrast to Salome, who became the Dominican Republic's national poet at the age of seventeen, Camila has spent most of her life trying not to offend anybody. Her mother dedicated her life to educating young women to give them voice in their turbulent new nation; Camila has spent her life quietly and anonymously teaching the Spanish pluperfect to upper-class American girls with no notion of revolution, no knowledge of Salome Urena.

Now, in 1960, Camila must choose a final destination for herself. Where will she spend the rest of her days? News of the revolution in Cuba mirrors her own internal upheaval. In the process of deciding her future, Camila uncovers the truth of her mother's tragic personal life and, finally, finds a place for her own passion and commitment.

Julia Alvarez has won a large and devoted audience by brilliantly illuminating the history of modern Caribbean America through the personal stories of its people. As a Latina, as a poet and novelist, and as a university professor, Julia Alvarez brings her own experience to this exquisite story.

5 out of 5 stars On of the most extrodinary and touching pieces of work by Julia Alvarez.......2007-09-16

This book is beautiflly written and demonstrates a mother and daughter's realtionship and how intertwined their family and political history become. I have read all of Julia Alvarez's novels and this by far was the most touching.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent!!!.......2007-09-15

I liked this book very much, it transported me to a time in my country that i didn't know anything. Julia made a great job showing me how was Salome's life not as a poet, as a woman...

5 out of 5 stars WOW..........2007-01-12

This book is wonderful...wow. I was immediately drawn to it since i knew that Julia Alvarez wrote it but once i started reading i fell in a trance. I sat and read it from finish to end without stopping. The way Julia picked each word and made it rhyme with the flow of the story was simply beautiful. I loved this book so much that it is my favorite book. I have read it at least 5 times both in English and Spanish and each time I am deeply moved with it.

The book is about two women, mother and daughter. Each chapter changes from the mothers perspective when she was alive and the daughters perspective now that she is trying to bring out the bits of her mom that are in her.

The whole book is simply remarkable! What can be more beautiful than a daughter struggling to be the Woman her mother was.

4 out of 5 stars Another Great by Alvarez.......2006-03-04

I cannot give a review at this time, not having read the book which has been recommended by my daughter. I am planning to submit it to my Book Club and have been desperately searching for a Discussin Guide, unsuccessfully. Can you help me, please?
Many thanks!! (I have filled in Items 1 and 2 to be able to send my request) nananita28@msn.com

A truly amazing book, one of the best I've read in a long time. The way the past and present are combined so perfectly makes for a great story I couldn't put down.
Buy it. It's worth it.

    4 out of 5 stars Pretty good.......2007-05-18

I'm not really a fan of Harlequen novels, but this one was actually pretty good. It is labeled 'historical' but I'd probably call it more a 'period' piece. When I think of 'historical novel' I usually come away having learned something about the history or culture and a desire to google for more info. That wasn't really the case here. But the story itself was pretty good. Sure, the hero and heroine took and instant dislike to each other, there were complications along the way, and the ended up in love...but there was a lot of 'side' interest too, in the sisters, the former lovers, accidents, etc. Good character development. I'm not real likely to run out and look for another Harliquen, but this one was laying around, so I picked it up....and enjoyed it.

5 out of 5 stars good book underneath.......2004-06-05

This one had alot of that female slave philosophy. It was perhaps most annoyingly shown in the cheap predictable plays the Players held, where every single free woman was either a slave in disguise or ended up as one, and of course deep down wanted to be one anyway. The wiping of fingers in slave girl's hair was particulary vile.

Having said that, this book was still a valuable Tarl Cabot book that continued the story line and had many good parts that warranted the overall 5 stars.

For one it starts out with the oddest mystery. The Priest kings want Tarl dead. What this means we don't know certainly it might mean that Misk, Tarl's loyal brave and modest Priest king friend is dead and there was change in regime. Or perhaps it's another Kurii trick.

Either way Tarl ends up fleeing Port Kar and going incognito a while. Without giving away the details he ends up investigating a strange city with the help of some Players (actors/musician/Kaissa players) caste of Gor. It seems as if a Kur is being held there. We later find out this Kur's true story and the Cos/Tyros plot to finally conquer Ar begins.

The side characters are particulary good in this Gor novel. Scormus of Ar and Boots and the actor that plays the General of Ar at the end are great. Boots when he is not sprouting slave dogma is probably one of the funniest characters Norman has created in the cycle.

5 out of 5 stars Just plain excelent.......1999-11-09

Another excelent edition to an excelent series. It has more of a comedic edge then the other novles in this series. It's a nice change.

1 out of 5 stars Channeled Info - That should sumamarize it..........2007-06-21

I found little or no background on how they came about this information, other than it being "Channeled" information. This is where all the red flags went straight up. Though it is possible to get important information from channeling the other side, it is rare at best. It is subject to many of the individual's thoughts. Knowing the background of the person, you see familiar patterns of thought. All of this book could have easily come from the mind of these 2 people.

I read the first few chapters actually thinking this was the word of St. Germain, and was impressed. It lined up with many current esoteric thoughts and the whole mainstream "woo woo" community. It did actually resonate with me until about page 25 or so. Then it became obvious this was just pandering to the reader and that this book was not real at all.

Will the real St. Germain stand up and be heard?

5 out of 5 stars Only if you are serious about self-transformation!.......2007-02-21

Reading the Ascended Masters is not easy; yet, hardly anything worthwhile is. This is a profound reading on true alchemy: transforming the lower metals of the human consciousness into the Gold of the Higher Self; the only alchemy that counts.

From reading this book, I see some of the reviews here seem to miss the point; the book is self-empowering: that your Higher Self (something inside you) be in control of your life.

Relating the word to "all chemistry" has nothing to do with the etymology of the word but rather with a play-on-words metaphoric meaning as already explained in the book: it takes chemical processes, heat, and other conditions to produce change. Transmutation (transformation) is what Alchemy is about.

Saint Germain refers to his and Jesus' Ascension as taking place in the physical. This can make some people uncomfortable but it doesn't take away from the knowledge in it.

And yes, the book is by The Summit Lighthouse and not by the earlier I AM or Bridge to Freedom.

It is a gift about the experiment in the laboratory of you own being on elevating the soul to spirit. Read it if you are serious about wanting self-transformation; it goes into a great deal that, if understood, studied and followed may very well transform your life.

                    5 out of 5 stars Great book!.......2006-04-27

This book does a good job introducing alchemy and it's purpose in every day life. It contains an interesting section on the spiritual history and destiny of the United States of America and includes a fairly easy to do meditation called "The Ritual of the Cloud." Not a book that you can sit down and read in two hours---but definitely worth getting if alchemy is something that interests you.

1 out of 5 stars Not by the Master.......2005-09-17

I concur with Msrs. Ali and Tseng (among other reviewers) in that this book was not discharged by beloved Master Saint Germain, and really doesn't do any honor to the name of the Master. In fact, I doubt that ANY of the books marketed by Summit Lighthouse (with the exception, perhaps, of Summit's first publications) was discharged by ANY Ascended Being.

One only needs to read ONE book really discharged by the Masters (take your pick, of the I AM Activity under Guy Ballard or of the Bridge to Freedom pre-1961 under Geraldine Innocente) to SENSE the difference.

                    1 out of 5 stars A disappointment.......2004-08-09

This book is not for me, but I can't justify saying that it's not for everyone. I will conclude, however, that only hardcore Christians will be able to practice this system and not feel foolish due to the outdated and ridiculous philosophies. The majority of this book deals with handing your life over to God, letting God take over your Self and allowing his divine Will to operate through you.

I personally am not interested in giving up my sovereignty regarding my ability to reason and make my own choices. But, if you are, this book might just be for you.

Also, just as a sidenote, this book has absolutely nothing at all to do with traditional Alchemy. True Alchemists need not concern themselves with the teachings of Mr and Mrs Prophet...er, I mean, "St Germain."

If you've always liked formal, high-ceilinged rooms with classic period furniture that some would call "stiff," or gravitate to cozy, intimate rooms with an interesting array of travel memorabilia that your neatnik friends might refer to as "clutter," there's a reason. The Domain Book of Intuitive Home Design identifies four basic personality types--the Visionary, the Artisan, the Idealist, and the Adventurer--that correspond to four very different decorating styles. The book begins with a 20-question "Intuitive Personality Quiz" to help readers classify themselves using the four broadly drawn archetypes. Then the fun begins, as a question is posed: "What would you do with a naked sofa?" A basic sofa is shown with an all-out treatment for each personality type: satin pillows and classic flanking end tables for the Visionary; printed cotton pillows, a teddy bear, and an afghan for the Artisan; sleek leather coverings and a bare floor for the Idealist; four contrasting cloth coverings and leopard-print and shag pillows for the Adventurer. Each personality type and its preferences are described in detail, and then a room-by-room section shows how each type can implement a decorating plan that shows off its preferences to advantage. Shopping lists and mini-exercises display an element of playfulness--after all, decorating is supposed to be fun! And the "split personalities" pages at the end help dual types integrate their preferences into an interesting, cohesive whole. If you haven't yet managed to settle into a style that's really right for you, this book will show you how to plan rooms you'll feel comfortable in.

                                    Book Description

Do you love bright, airy rooms with sheer curtains that allow light to flood in? Or are you attracted to intimate, jewel-box rooms with rich fabrics and colors? Are you most comfortable when nestled among pretty objects to touch and enjoy, or do you want your home to be free from all clutter?

These decorating choices aren't just a matter of taste. They're true reflections of your personality, and they speak volumes about who you are.

The Domain Book of Intuitive Home Design is the first book to identify four different kinds of people--the Visionary, the Artisan, the Idealist, and the Adventurer--and to explore how these types express themselves through aesthetic choices.

If you're an Idealist, you might be happiest in a sleek, contemporary home with all the latest conveniences. But if you're an Adventurer, your domestic bliss would more likely be found in a lively dwelling that bursts with color and surprise. You might be a Visionary if you love fine antiques and classic proportions; if you're more interested in casual, comfortable furnishings and a great view of the outdoors, then you're probably an Artisan.

This book begins with a quiz to help you discover which personality archetype you most resemble. The next four chapters give an overall picture of each archetype, and explore the emotional underpinnings that lead to each type's decorating preferences.

Then, a room-by-room section brings those choices into beautiful focus. From real-life examples you will learn to create a home that is not only lovely to look at, but that also suits your true self. Shopping lists, mini-exercises, and guided visualizations will inspire, educate, and amuse you. Along the way you will recognize yourself, your friends, and your loved ones.

The Domain Book of Intuitive Home Design introduces a whole new way of thinking about decorating. Most important, it offers the language and the tools to understand and express your one-of-a-kind style.

4 out of 5 stars Unique approach to style.......2006-05-19

This unique book addresses decorating styles based on personality - the visionary, the artisan, the idealist and the adventurer. It contains quizzes to test your style and then shows examples of each type of room for each of the four styles. I liked the page of each style section that states -"You may be an artisan if ..." and it lists different traits. Also at the end of each style is the alphabet for each style - and it gives buzz words for each style. Very unique and creative; fun to read with good ideas.

                                    5 out of 5 stars Entertaining.......2003-10-03

I liked this book, I ended up giving it away to a friend and I will purchase it again and again. You will be able to share with your group of friends the personality test and understand why you like some stuff and why your friends like other things.

                                    1 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2002-12-17

I guess I must be one of the few people that didn't like this book. The quiz may be simple, but it is not very helpful. I was excited to learn what personality Type I was, but when I looked at the photos, I didn't feel like it fit my design style. I think that only four styles is way too few to encompass the varity that is present in interior decoration. I was also disappointed in a similar book called Yes/No Design. Sometimes, if a book doesn't have very useful tips, but beautiful photos, I might still buy the book. The photos don't save this book from the reject pile.

I think that people are much better off choosing their own unique style of interior decoration then trying to have it dictated to them by a quiz. Sometimes, interior decoration is about breaking the rules and going with your own intuition.

Recommendation: There are other books that will give you better guidance towards developing your own style. Good luck!

                                    Other Resources:

The Ultimate Home Style Guide by Katherine Sorrell is the best book on the broadest range of styles that I have seen. Almost all styles are represented here with enough details on colors, fabrics, and other style elements to create the looks yourself.

The Architecture and Design Library series are excellent primers on different design styles. Each book focusess on one style, such as eastern style, Arts & Crafts, French Country, and Retro Modern to name just a few.

Color in Your Home by T. Evelegh has one of the best primers on how to use color. The photos are beautiful. The style is modern country and/or feminine (but not overdone) color schemes.

Color Design File by Geddes-Brown also does a great job of covering the basics, and there are beautiful photos. I like the fact that there are pockets for swatches and magazine inspirations. This book shows primarily Loft style.

5 out of 5 stars Must buy! Why? Simply because it was so inciteful..........2000-04-28

Not only was the "quiz" extremely easy to take, fun to read and quite inciteful but the illustrations, the content and presentation of this book was absolutely an A+ for me. It doesn't matter what level of "expertise" you categorize yourself in with respect to interior design...this book touches everyone at every level. It's also a great gift idea!

5 out of 5 stars The Domain Book of Intuitive Design.......2000-04-13

My wife and I have eclectic tatses. Our home consists of a 300+ cookie jar collection all the way through to antique tables, beds and chairs. We have spent many years collecting/decorating, and are constantly seeking opportunities to bridge the gap between our differing design points of view. It is important to us both, that as we personalize each room, and balance is achieved to mesh our combined tastes. Since we entertain frequently, our environment is very important, as we seek to provide warmth and coziness, while at the same time, provoke thoughts of curiosity and of course, smiles. We achieve this through our art, furnishings and use of space, and are actively searching for additions to furnish. The Intuitive Book of Home Design helped us to focus on identifying our unique personalities to ensure that we achieve balance. The test was particularly revealing, not to mention fun. We did find ourselves somewhat on the edge of more then one type, which might explain how the mix of my wife's taste and style, while different then mine, can work well as we developed a greater understanding and appreciation for our unique points of view through our reading.

                                    Thanks Judy.

                                      1 out of 5 stars Why bother?.......2002-09-19

Funnily enough, Ms. Lewis does have a daughter - Monica Lewinsky.
Other than camy appeal, this book has no merits whatsoever. Spend your money on some real opera recordings, you'll be glad you did.

                                      1 out of 5 stars Trash.......2002-08-06

Garbage. This is the worst kind of puff, trash piece. Much of this information is culled from other sources. Not worth the time or money. Anybody really interested in the Three Tenors can find better and more interesting information elsewhere.

1 out of 5 stars Save your money!.......2002-01-12

Marcia Lewis is a really bad joke for an author. All the information is lifted out of previous material available. Nothing is new here. She tries to make money on gossip and even fails at that. The pictures are OK but I doubt if any of those are original to this book either. Something for the pop media only; not for opera lovers nor fans of these three artists. The best of these men is their performance on stage and hopefully, that brought some new people to opera that may not have tried it without the 3 Tenors. There is so much more to all three of these men than Lewis' book. Skip it and read their own bios.

What a sleazy book! Does this woman have a daughter? Would she want her reading this!

2 out of 5 stars Very sloppy research.......1999-02-21

As Jose Carreras is my favourite tenor, I immediately went to those chapters. All the text was completely lifted from Sr. Carreras's autobiography, and newspaper/magazine articles. A bit of hearsay & innuendo thrown in to give the book a "gossippy" feel. The same goes for the chapters on Domingo & Pavarotti, with the exception that Ms.Lewis would like us to believe that she had an affair with Sr. Domingo. If she is anything like her daughter, I'm sure That the Maestro would want to keep away.

Not even a personal interview. Well, I can't blame the gentlemen for keeping away. My 8yr. old daughter could have done better.

I spent £20 on this book. Still, it helps me to sleep on restless nights, and some of the Carreras photos are cute.

I can't wait until Monica publishes her expose.
