Book Description
An old man is slowly losing himself to Alzheimer's, but before he vanishes completely, he reveals to his son his greatest accomplishment: the destruction of "the black man's burden," which is, he explains, "Negroes...unwilling to rise above their lowly conditions, and making it their cause to take us all down into the pits." Throughout this work, readers will be struggling to determine if what he tells his son is true, or a delusion, an effect of the disease. But whether believed or doubted...the father's words are a revelation.

Karma Incarnate .......2007-08-09
I was both appalled and enthralled reading this literary piece. Excellent, to say the least. It takes the reader to a place of self examination, sometimes an ugly journey to sojourn! I felt myself relating to Joseph, then despising his arrogance and judmental behavior. Bryan Gibson is a brilliant author, I am looking forward to reading more from him.
Wonderful concept.......2007-06-07
Loved this book. It was engaging, suspenseful, and smart. To be 100% honest, it was a bit difficult to follow at times, but I enjoyed it nonetheless.
A Writer Worth Reading.......2006-08-09
First let me apologize for any typos or fragments that I may display in this message. I'm a busy mom, so sleeping is a luxury.
Your book was amazing, Mr. Gibson. I truly loved it. I was so impressed with the story line. I am a fan of a Soldier's Story, so your analogy of the Sarge aka Joseph Tally was beautiful. Your story touched base on a lot of issues that plague African-Americans today. I know for a fact that many times I feel like Joseph Tally and want to get rid of the "fools" I encounter on a regular basis. By the way, your breakdown of the coyote and roadrunner was "Super Genius".
When reading your book, the question I kept asking of Joseph was "Who gave you the right to judge?" That question often plagued me when watching A Soldier's Story as well. The Foolkiller reminds us of all the residue of slavery that haunts our people, and how we dont even realize it. They say that after a year of being captured, brainwashed and raped, Elizabeth Smart suffered from "Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome", can you imagine what generations of suffering (from the slave trade to now) has done to us?
Your story brought up so many valid points, and it is truly a story that we as a people need to read. Even if one doesn't truly agree with it, it makes you think. Which is vital when reading anything, I believe. Pardon my fragments and grammar. I have not been blessed with the writing skills that you possess. Your wording was filled with so much texture. Even if I wasn't a Harlemite, I would still be able to see and smell what you wrote.
I would just like to thank you for blessing me with that bulletin on MySpace that led to the purchase of a wonderful story. If you have any more let me know, so I can add it to my library.
One more thing. I know why they dont want to publish your book. It was never their intention to teach the slaves or their descendants. Like Fredrick Douglass said, he was free from slavery when he learned how to read. They want to keep us deaf ,dumb and blind. Because if we ever were to wake up, what a war it would be. This is why they just want us to read more Homo Thug, and My life as a prostitute garbage. You are truly talented, Mr. Gibson, and I wish you much success!
You Need To Buy This Book!.......2006-08-09
I loved this book. It is a must read, for all the true readers out there. It provides thought provoking questions, and has you spellbound through each page.
I advise anyone who loves to read to buy this thought provoking masterpiece.
Wow........2006-04-21
Wow, just wow. I read the book in 2 days. It was a page turner. The story wove fantasy and reality together in a strange way - or was it all fantasy, or was it all reality? Things that make you go Hmmm......
I especially like the different types of fools discussed in the book. The fools, and the reasons why these characters were fools, is something that isn't often talked about in our community. When it is, it's usually discussed in a holier-than-thou OR you-ain't-better-than-me/us manner. In my opinion, it was discussed in a way that each fool was seen as equally negative.
Hopefully what I just said makes some sense. Great book. My only complaints were that it wasn't long enough (I wanted more more more!) and that I didn't fully understand the ending (was it meant to be understood, though?). I've already recommended it to one person and will be recommending it to many others.

Enjoyed.......2003-05-21
I justed finished reading Savage Mists. I could not put it down. I enjoyed the story about Damita and Timonthy. The way that Iron Cloud and the Omaha people received Damita and Timothy into there lives was great. It was a great story about two different cultures and how they came together. I always enjoy reading the books by Cassie Edwards. Please keep them coming.
Read it!.......2003-03-19
Savage Surrender was a lot hotter; but I really enjoyed reading this one.
starts slow, but pays off!.......2001-12-18
This was a good book, which was rather surprising, as I was fully prepared to dislike it from the start, as I hate the books where the woman gets captured and then falls for her captor. It always seems to weak-willed and silly. But if you stick with this book, going beyond the pages where you might dislike Iron Cloud wanting to forcefully change Damita into White Willow, you'll see his attitude changes quickly, and really you get the impression all along that he probably wouldn't have forced her into anything for very long! She eventually chose her own destiny and chose Iron Cloud and his people over her cruel cousin. Iron Cloud and Damita's love was very palpable and he was gentle and loving with her in a way that's very envious for any red-blooded woman! His devotion to Timothy was sweet, where even when Damita was pregnant, Iron CLoud had decided that even if the child was a boy, he's still give Timothy (a white child, remember), his position as chief someday. So, I'd recommend this book if you can make it past the beginning.

This book was not very captivating........1999-06-10
I found it hard to like any of the characters in this book! The women were unchallenging and too easily seduced, especially the herione, White Willow. I found the characters dull and unbelievable. The Indian wisdom Iron Cloud tried to convey to Timothy seemed detached and impersonal. The love encounters tried too much too soon an seemed awkward and clinical to me. The plot was mediocre in keeping me interested. I found myself skipping sentences just to get through it- and I never do that!
Another great book........1999-05-05
This is just one of Cassie Edwards's books and like the others it is one that shouldn't be missed. A+++++++
Book Description
The human race has extended itself into the far reaches of our solar system -- and, in doing so, has developed into something remarkable. The inner system of the Met -- with its worlds connected by a vast living network of cables -- is supported by the repression and enslavement of humanity's progeny, nanotechnological artificial intelligences whom the tyrant Amés has declared non-human. But the longing for freedom cannot be denied. And now a line has been drawn at Neptune's moon Triton, where those who oppose Ame's and hisfearsome minions await the foretold return of a mysterious man of destiny and doom who has vanished into the backwater of the Met. But resistance will only ensure the unspeakable onslaught of the dictator's wrath -- a rage that will soon ravage the solar system and plunge all of humankind into the fury of total war.
Customer Reviews:
Cautionary Tale.......2006-06-21
In a world where nanotechnology is more fundamental to life than a TV or car are today, it takes the courage of a select few to oppose those that are in power and want to use that power (nanotech based power) to rule the solar system.
Metaplanetary takes a bit of time to get rolling into the story. But once it does, is an engaging read. In a world where EVERYTHING is based on nanotechnology (even a large portion of the population), Daniel does a reasonably good job of describing the potential benefits (instant communication anywhere) of this technology, as well as the pitfalls that may occur (evil dictator using the nanotech to control everyone and everything).
Daniel presents some interesting ideas in this story. Creating a world where nanotechnology can permeate anything, Daniel runs with the idea. Nanotech boosting the intelligence of rats and ferrets for instance. Nanotech even making it unnecessary to go to the bathroom for nearly a week. (That's what I'm looking forward to!)
Daniel presents a plausible story of what our future may hold. What technological breakthroughs may be awaiting us...and how to use those breakthroughs for the benefit of everyone.
Good story, scam series........2005-08-17
Story is good and interesting, but I didn't realize until towards the end that I would have to continue in another book. I would not waste my money on this again, or as a gift.
Excellent Surprise.......2005-02-16
An excellent story with some novel (no pun intended) approaches to the space opera genre. Tony Daniel had combined human elements with some fun and interesting scientific principles. This story kicks off a solar-system-wide civil war in a universe where the planets are physically linked together into the "Met".
The entire Met, including the connecting "cables" is populated with multiple billions of people whose lives are in turn interconnected through the nano-quantum material called "grist". Humanity has branched out into various forms including Free Converts - Virtual bodiless people, LAP's - Large Array of Personalities, Cloudships - living comets (for lack of better word) and of course biological humans who are fully integrated with their own convert (virtual) copies as well as the assisting grist pellicle that connects them to the physical and virtual world that dominates the Met.
With characters spread around the solar system, Tony Daniel brings to life a world of intelligent ferrets, mystics, dictators and lovers. Reminiscent of Peter Hamilton and Robert Heinlein, Mr. Daniel brings us a strange new world with fascinating characters and an interesting and plausible storyline. I fully enjoyed this book and recommend it.
Not if you like hard SF.......2005-01-23
Too much meaningless verbiage - Too little knowledge of how the universe actually works. Belongs in the fantasy section midway between the Oz books and Perdido Street Station.
Excellent!.......2005-01-08
An excellent novel. One of the most compelling and original sci-fi novels I've ever read in a long time. I especially loved the concepts that are presented. This I believe will become a classic along the lines of Asimov, Clarke, Bradbury and Heinlein.
Customer Reviews:
Epic Hard Science Fiction.......2006-03-13
The first thing that you should know before picking up this book is that it isn't a stand-alone novel. It is the first book of a trilogy. The second book is called "Superluminary." The third book is called... well I don't know what it's called. Eos apparently declined to pay Mr. Daniel to write the third book, so he understandably hasn't. This is a shame on many levels. This could have been (and hopefully perhaps one day will be) a science fiction epic that might have stood the test of time.
The closest comparison to this book that I have read recently is Peter Hamilton's "Pandora's Star" and "Judas Unchained" duology. This book is filled with hard SF and questions of how humanity will move into the future. It doesn't deal with the singularity at all, but deals impressively with questions of how we will cope when human personalities are no longer confined to their individual bodies. In this book we meet humans who primarily reside in their physical bodies, but with a cloud of nanites (called "grist") to help them with memory and computations. We meet humans who have distributed their personalities between many bodies and the omnipresent grist and are called "Large Array Personalities" or LAPs. There are people who exist only in the grist and are called "free converts" and then the children of "normal" people and free converts who are "half-converts." And let's not forget the cloudships!
We meet a huge cast of characters in this, and start many plot lines. None of them are resolved, as one would expect. Basically, the dictator Amés is starting a war between all the factions of the solar system. His ultimate goal involves uniting all the human personalities existing under one rule: his. To this end he is particularly interested in enslaving all the free converts. The descriptions of his concentration camps and their Mengele-type experiments aren't particularly violent, but they are very disturbing. We also learn the stories of himself, his victims and his opponents, with lots of hard-SF world building and history. This is exactly my sort of thing, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I will read "Superluminary," and then I will join the ranks of those who are really annoyed at Eos for not funding the conclusion of this amazing epic of science fiction.

Customer Reviews:
Much Discernment Required.......2002-11-19
This book contained way too many ideas that are either not biblically based, or directly against what is spelled out in the Bible as far as our relationship with Christ and our prayer life goes. Many new-age ideas have crept their way into her writing, and the prayers that she uses to "help" you learn to pray better are very rigid, structured, and formal. Ms. Rowlett could herself use a good study in what true conversation with God is.

Book Description
Food is not simply a popularly imagined and well-known manifestation of Jewish culture. For Jews, food has been a means of exclusion, persecution, and assimilation by the larger society. Equally important, it has been an instrument of community, reparation, and renewal of identity. Food and Judaism presents a wide range of research on the history and interpretation of Jewish food practices and meanings. This volume covers a comprehensive array of topics, including American regional manifestations of food practices from little-known Jewish communities in cities such as contemporary Brighton Beach and Memphis; a social history of Jewish food in America by the renowned expert on Jewish food Joan Nathan; and an examination of how the American food industry appealed to early twentieth-century Jews. Several discussions of the religious meaning and personal advantages of following a vegetarian lifestyle are considered from biblical and historical perspectives. A rescued cookbook text from the Theresienstadt concentration camp is juxtaposed with an examination of how garlic in Jewish cooking served as an anti-Semitic caricature in early modern Europe. Historical perspectives are also provided on the use of separate dishes for milk and meat, the sanctification of Hasidic foods in Eastern Europe, and "mystical satiation" as found in the medieval Kabbalah. Leonard J. Greenspoon is a professor of classical and Near Eastern studies and theology and holds the Klutznick Chair in Jewish Civilization at Creighton University. Ronald A. Simkins is an associate professor of theology and director of the Center for the Study of Religion and Society at Creighton University. Gerald Shapiro is a professor of English at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

Great ideas at great prices!.......2007-01-22
What else could you want, a book that shows you fabulous interiors and how to design them at a very reasonable price? Beautiful photos, incredible ideas, shows you how to use what you have to have a modern/shabby chic look with gorgeous inexpensive touches you can do yourself! Buy this book! Great value and fabulous for those on a tight budget. Mine is already curled on the cover from looking through it so many times. And every time I find a new idea. How many books can you say that about?
Low cost decorating ideas.......2006-05-18
This book shows a range of decorating projects under $50. Some are good, others look cheap. Overall it provides some good ideas. I liked the how-to and tip sections.
Quality looks, great savings! .......2006-02-22
My main complaint about books focusing on inexpensive decorating ideas? The fact that most of the "decorations" look cheap, tacky and unappealing.
This book is an exception. Many of the accents, crafts and decorations featured here are suitable for a variety of home spaces (and quite a few are designed for outdoor "rooms" as well). As in any book of this sort, readers are unlikely to find EVERY idea to their liking but I was pleasantly surprised by the number of suggestions that I was interested in adapting to my home.
Best of all, the results usually looked as nice as anything you could find in an expensive home furnishings department. There were some classic ideas as well, always good for maximizing the value of this type of book.

Great new study of Du"rer.......2004-02-12
A new and innovative approach to Albrecht Du"rer, with insightful observations on the role of religion in his work. Nicely illustrated. The author has an excellent knowledge and "feel" for Du"rer's art, and also knows the cultural history of the time and understands Du"rer's relationship to the reformation and to the humanist movement. Highly recommended.
