As Quentin Crisp used to say, "Don't keep up with the Joneses! Drag them down to your level!" This could be the motto of the suburbanites in A.M. Homes's fourth novel, Music for Torching. Homes has a subtle eye and ear for suburban reality, but beware: she is no mere satirist of what James Joyce called the "muddle crass." Behind each neat, bright lawn, vile lives writhe in darkness. On the surface, Paul and Elaine are conventionally competitive middle-aged, middle-class people with banal yearnings for French doors and a new deck. They have two strapping boys. Their neighbors Pat and George are prodigies of efficient family life. But alone with Elaine, Pat drops the Stepford Wife mask and stages loveless orgies atop the throbbing washer, amid the Downy and Fantastik and Bon Ami. Meanwhile, Paul beds a local wife and a sinister mistress. The nice old man down the street downloads Internet child porn. Local kids join the Boy Scouts and bite off teachers' fingers. It's all about lurid misery and false fronts: a minor character is named Claire Roth, surely alluding to the bitter relationship in Claire Bloom's Leaving a Doll's House and Philip Roth's I Married a Communist.
Paul and Elaine first popped up in Homes's collection The Safety of Objects, as a couple having the happiest night of their lives smoking crack while the kids are away. Their happiest night here is when they tip the barbecue and burn their house halfway down. The story proceeds with a nightmare zombie logic from there, with a funny-scary ironic tone. "Paul notices that the color of her eye shadow is Fiction, and her lipstick is called Sheer Fraud.... 'What happened to the dining-room table, Elaine? Why'd you chop it to pieces?'" he wonders. "The damage was irreparable," his wife replies. Homes describes nice people doing not-so-nice deeds in luminous, precise prose way better than Bret Easton Ellis, as well as Joyce Carol Oates, and occasionally within range of John Updike. But Homes is really the evil spawn of Grace Metalious and Quentin Tarantino. --Tim Appelo
Book Description
As A.M. Homes's incendiary novel unfolds, the Kodacolor hues of the good life become nearly hallucinogenic.Laying bare th foundations of a marriage, flash frozen in the anxious entropy of a suburban subdivision, Paul and Elaine spin the quit terors of family life into a fantastical frenzy that careens out of control. From a strange and hilarious encounter with a Stepford Wife neighbor to an ill-conceived plan for a tattoo, to a sexy cop who shows up at all the wrong moments, to a housecleaning team in space suits, a mistress calling on a cell phone, and a hostage situationat a school, A.M. Homes creates characters so outrageously flawed and deeply human that thery are entriely believable.

The Collapse of a Family.......2007-03-20
Graphic for the sake of being graphic, this novel never really got off the ground with me after it lost me with an illogical premise for the whole plot. Though I must say, my MFA class was split as to whether they thought the novel succeeded or not. Quickly: family is falling apart; family burns down house in desperation; family learns that the pursuits central to their collapse as a family are doing far more damage than they ever could have imagined.

Couldn't finish.......2007-01-23
The book was so dark and depressing, coupled with completely unlikable characters and a plot that meanders, it just didn't seem worthwhile. I really liked This Book Will Save Your Life (which prompted this purchase), but I was pretty disappointed in this book.
The Dark Side of the Suburbs.......2007-01-15
A.M. Homes Music for Torching is a dark, twisted book, a satirical disection of a seemingly normal suburban couple and their lives. No one is faithful in their neighborhood and all hide deep, dark secrets, yet all carry on as if they just walked out of a Norman Rockwell painting. The story is told in a snarky, sarcastic tone with very amusing results. Some scenes are stronger than others, the best being devastatingly funny satires of suburban barbecues and dinner parties. Music for Torching is not for all readers, just those who enjoy twisted dark comedies.
Homes Burns Home.......2006-05-11
I can only give you my perspective.
To me, this book's sole chance to claim some value would be if it were able to serve as a "cautionary tale," or self-help parable, to be read and acted upon by the type of people described therein. What type of people are these, you ask? They are a hetero couple: American, white, middle-aged, middle-class, suburban, bored, self-absorbed, superficial, incurious, calculating, and inept in the roles they find for themselves in their NYC-area suburban neighborhood (housekeeping, cooking, parenting, economical suburban husbandry, and so on). They are also habitual liars.
Their twin personality poles--emptiness and selfishness--create a working space within which the author is able to make many dark jokes, some of which are funny. Yes, they represent in allegorical fashion the political, cultural, architectural and human emptiness and selfishness of the American suburbs. Just as there is not enough there there in the suburbs, as human beings Elaine and Paul lack any sort of substantial personal core, or home. Their clumsy attempt to burn down their house at the open is the clumsy, overwrought symbol which informs the rest of the story.
To me "Music for Torching" has no literary value, zero--there is no poetry here. There is a kind of selective transcription and distillation of the thought and words of suburban family life, with omissions of gesture, tone of voice, etc. used to create a sense of loopy, malevolent derangement, and impending doom. There are isolated photo-like bursts of sociological and psychological penetration, with clever formulations and associations, and surreal sitcom-like riffs. I'm not saying what A.M. Homes has done is easy to do--it's not. But then neither, say, is writing a critical anthropological study of privileged white people in Westchester. That would have been better.
Up to a point, Homes does a good job depicting the American demand for "authentic" experience. Unless they are--with each new moment--surprised, excited and delighted, reassured and loved, Elaine and Paul don't know what to do with themselves. Their inner mental monologues are a hash of confusion, insecurity, folly.
The author shouts via bullhorn, when the asthma inhaler comes out, that she (or Elaine and Paul) will be killing off one or both children. The tragic conclusion is probably the safest and least inspired moment of the book. But people like Paul and Elaine don't get their come-uppance by losing a child. Statistically such children are pampered, loved and maintained like no other children in human history. Instead, American suburban selfishness and emptiness redound to boring things like: enormous national debt, destruction of wildlife habitat, sweatshops, bad air quality, rising cancer rates, festering racism, and horrible political leaders who decide to kill many people in other countries. That's where you will find the _actual_ end of this tragedy.
More likely is that Sammy and Daniel grow up selfish and empty, go to school to learn to exploit something, and then, in the year 2050, find their world rocked when the exploitees bite them on the ass.
If you want your satirical portrayal of white suburban American childish greed and folly straight up, I'd recommend "The Depressed Person," by David Foster Wallace. If you want a story about the mistakes of parents echoing to the destruction of a child, take a look at David Foster Wallace's fully human "Incarnations of Burned Children," from _Oblivion_. Let the astounding ending of this one serve as antidote to A.M. Homes' tacked-on ending.
Mediocre writing try's, but fails to bring any funny or new realizations to suburban alienation.......2005-09-27
The book starts by bringing you straight into the feeling of despair and alienation Elaine and her husband Paul are experiencing in their suburban life. You feel a vague sympathy for them and wonder, "what must be going on in their lives to make them feel so trapped?"
This question is never really answered. The book spends time expressing this depressing state of being in various satirical situations, but never gets beyond the expression of that feeling, which we get from the first page of the book. She offers no insight on why the characters came to feel the way they do, or what they can do to get out of it. As a character portrait all that is fashioned for the protagonist Elaine is the feeling of helplessness; no other aspects of her psyche or personality are defined. We learn nothing about her thoughts, views on the world, personality, or patterns of thinking that may give us a hint as to why she got that way. The same can be said for Paul.
Their environment gives us few clues as well. They live the typical life of a suburban family. They have good kids, good money, and good friends. Since we have seen this story portrayed in many better books and movies before, we can guess what the problems of their environment are. They feel they have to put up a front of stability and happiness for the people they are around, even their closest friends and family. They feel they are only going through the motions of daily life, and following a set of societal rules.
But, the thing is, their lives aren't any worse than anyone else's; in fact, they live pretty good lives. Anyone in any situation anywhere on the planet could be feeling what the characters are. One gets the sense that the author feels this is the general human condition. What this means for us as a race of people is never explored; instead it's dealt with in sloppy, broad strokes, with an ending too dramatic and serious for the scope of the novel. The aspects of the novel that are meant to be ironic and funny are not creative enough to even be clever. Nor are the things that are meant to be shocking at all original enough to have us surprised. Skip this novel and rent American Beauty.

Interesting Idea..........2007-02-09
I am recently re-reading this series for fun. The first time around, I did not enjoy this book that much. However, when it came time to re-read it I found interesting. The Hork-Bajir valley has been found. Jake and the others must find a way to save the HB. Meanwhile a paralle story is being told about Jake's ancestor (a Civil War leader). All together I found the main plot a bit boring, but enjoyed the historical subplot. Not too bad all around. A bit short though. It's only 23-25 chapters, I believe.
OK.......2003-06-27
In this book the Yeerks invade the free HB colony. there is also the diary for one of Jake's ansestors who was a general in the Civil war. It's not too good :(
..........2001-07-29
I am an avid Animorphs reader...but this book left me disapionted. I thought it was the worst out of the whole series. I did not like the diary entries from Jake's grandfather. If you are looking for realism read this book otherwise just skip the diary entries because they give no addition to the story except make it longer.
Pretty good.......2001-01-18
This was pretty good, but it could've been better. I liked it a lot, but compared to #49 and #50, it's only 4 stars. Right after I read it, I would've said it was awesome, and that it is 5 stars. But #49 and #50 are the BEST in the entire series. This is a must-read, but those are even better.
The Resistance.......2000-12-29
The invasion is starting to speed up, the animorphs series has started to get a bit continuous between books 25 and 40. Now it looks as if things are starting to change. There are two stories to this book. One is about the Hork Bajir being discovered and the other is about Jake`s ancestor from the civil war which I didn`t like much (why I gave the book three stars). The story seemed to go off the boil a bit because every other chapter was Jake`s ancestor, Isaiah Fitzhenry`s journal from the cival war. Apart from that it was really good. The Animorphs and Ax have to make the most importent decision they`ve ever had to make: Do they continue to fighy the Yeerks in secret, or is it time to let everyone know there is a resistance? It`s good how The Animorphs and Ax save the Hork Bajir with a Beaver morph and... well I won`t say much it`a good book worth reading.

The title of this memoir (the second in a series, following the well-received Sacred Journey) originates in the theologian Paul Tillich's epigraph: "We want only to show you something we have seen and to tell you something we have heard ... that here and there in the world and now and then in ourselves is a New Creation." The humility of this title--the "now and then" that refers to the occasional glimpse of glory but does not claim any more for itself than that--beautifully reveals something of the tone and attitude of Buechner himself. It also suggests what it is about him that readers hold so dear. In this volume, picking up where the first book left off, Buechner begins with his education at Union Theological Seminary, where he studied under Tillich and others. He then tells of his years as minister and teacher at Phillips Exeter Academy, concluding with his move to Vermont and his decision to make a living as a full-time writer.
As he says very simply in the introduction, "if you tell your own story with sufficient candor and concreteness, it will be an interesting story and in some sense a universal story." It will also, as this book affirms, be a story that says something of the myriad ways in which God speaks to us. This realization lies at the center of this small but lovely book. "Autobiography becomes a way of praying," he concludes, "and a book like this, if it matters at all, matters mostly as a call to prayer." --Doug Thorpe
Book Description
Spiritual and autobiographical reflections on the author's seminary days, early ministry, and writing career.
Customer Reviews:
listen to your life.......2002-03-03
Frederick Buechner's "Now and Then" is, at its core, an engrossing story. It is the sequel to Buechner's first piece of autobiographical literature "The Sacred Journey."
"Now and Then" picks up where the prior volume left off--Buechner's entrance into Seminary. It follows his life up until the publication of "Godric."
Don't be fooled by the slimness of this volume. There are many lessons to be gleaned from Buechner's look back on his life. From the lessons of an extended youth in seminary, to the rigors of representing God in a semi-hostile environment, this is an education crammed into a few pages.
Yet the main message of this book is best expressed by Buechner himself. About two-thirds of the way through the book he says:
"Listen to your life. See it for the fathomless mystery that it is. In the boredom and pain of it no less than in the excitement and gladness: touch, taste, smell your way to the holy and hidden heart of it because in the last analysis all moments are key moments, and life itself is grace."
Get this book. See how one man's life shows forth something of this universal truth. I recommend it highly.
Incalculably Inspiring.......1999-08-07
As a Christian who spends every day searching for a deeper faith and understanding it is somehow comforting and unbelievable to find that a man so brilliant shares my deepest, darkest feelings. Beuchner writes, in the most poetic way, of his journey through midlife/midcareer and all the doubts and fears that accompany those difficult years. Through his words, I've gained a better appreciation of the ministry, of writers and of myself. What a gift.
Book Description
Rolling vineyards with world-famous names. A wave from the gardener tending her potager. Pan bagna in the village square for lunch, and the prospect of dinner at a three-star inn to get you through those last five uphill kilometers. Bicycling through France brings you into intimate contact with the land, the people, and the food-especially the food. It's an experience that Sarah Leah Chase, acclaimed cookbook author, gourmet food-shop owner, and, since college, bicycle tour guide for Butterfield & Robinson, celebrates in Pedaling Through Burgundy.
Illustrated in full color and peppered with anecdotes and travel writing, cooking tips and wine notes, the book is a personal cookbook with a select but dazzling collection of recipes. It evokes the famed land of big red wines with hearty food to match: a classic French Onion Soup Gratine, Boeuf Bourguignon with a twist-the meat is grilled- Venison Ragout with Whole cloves of Garlic and Dried Fruits, and desserts including Pinot Noir Gratine, Warm Chocolate Boules with Strawberry Beaujolais Sauce, and Colette's Lemon Tart.
Customer Reviews:
As a travel guide to Burgundy, it's wonderful!.......2004-07-28
When I was looking for guidebooks for an upcoming trip to France, the librarian suggested this cookbook and, oh, what a wonderful suggestion it was! While the recipes were interesting looking and we learned much about the cuisine we would soon be tasting, it's value for us was the marvelous overview and incredible font of information it provided on the Burgundy region. It introduced us to the wines, the food, the villages and the little out-of-the-way places that made our trip so incredibly memorable. We used it constantly, met many of the people she wrote about and stopped in the restaurants, shops and sites she recommended. For anyone who is contemplating a visit to Burgundy, loves the French countryside or wants to experience it vicariously, this is just the book to do it with.
Great book for French cuisine rookies.......2004-02-27
I'm a 30-something single man who used to live in terror of trying to cook French cuisine. I found this book and have had wild success with several of Sarah's recipes. Yes, some of the sauces are "dumbed-down" north american versions of French sauces, but no one has complained about them yet! Straightforward recipes and very pleasing results make this is a great book for French cuisine rookies.
Nice Twists on Traditional French Recipes.......2003-09-29
Sarah Leah Chase is my favorite cookbook author, and while this isn't her best effort (Nantucket Open House Cookbook is *essential* for anyone who loves food), it contains plenty of excellent French provincial-inspired recipes while avoiding the stodginess of that traditional fare. Chase uses French cooking standbys, butter and cream, along with Burgundian ingredients like Dijon mustard, Chablis and red Burgundy wines. But she also spices things up with a liberal use of Creme de Cassis--the recipe for Candied Shallot and Walnut Croutes is worth the price of the book alone. Other outstanding recipes include one for Baked Oysters, a lovely Pain d'Epices and Potato Gratin Dijonnaise. If the book has a weakness, it's probably in the meat dishes. Most are pretty similar to recipes found in other French Bistro or Americanized French cookbooks. But this is still a very worthy, not to mention beautiful looking, cookbook that belongs on the pantry shelf of any serious cook or cookbook aficionado.
How much you like this depends on what you are looking for.......2003-07-31
I agree with the reviewer below: the author takes frequent liberties with traditional recipes. I, however, think this is a good thing. It's analogous to the difference between dining out at a traditional French bistro vs. a French inspired more nouvelle cuisine type of restaurant. They each have their place, they're just different.
It's totally understandable to expect this book to have traditional Burgundian recipes and it largely doesn't. But this doesn't mean that it, and the companion Provence cookbook, are unworthy of spots on your cookbook shelf. The recipes are creative and come out consistently well, plus the book is a good read. I made the asparagus in aigrelette sauce last night and served it with seared salmon as the recipe suggested-- incredibly fast, easy, different, and delicious. You can't ask for much more in a cookbook, assuming you are not looking for 100% traditional recipes. There are are plenty of books with those, so kudos to Ms. Chase for providing us with something different and doing it very well.
Nice but flawed by Americanized recipes.......1999-05-05
An amusing and well-written little book, with some very practical information about the region, the villages, the vineyards, the winemakers and their wines, and the rich specialties of the cuisine.
Be forewarned, however: if you are looking for actual classic recipes of Burgundy, you will not find them here. The author, apparantly, knows best. For example, the author thinks that the traditional escargot baked in shells with snail butter is too rich and too old-fashioned, so she offers a Italo-American creation of her own (using proscuitto!) instead of the original. She does not like coq au vin, made in the traditional fashion, either; it suffers a similar fate. The delicious (to my mind, at any rate) starter of ham and parsley in wine-flavoured aspic, Jambon en Perseille, is another traditional dish of Burgundy that the author disapproves of; it too is only offered as an unrecognizable "improved" (Americanized) creation. Without the aspic, of course. Boeuf Bourgignonne, the quintessential slow-cooked red wine stew of Burgundy, indeed, THE regional specialty, is also too rich and old-fashioned for her tastes, so she does not offer the traditional recipe at all, but rather another of her "improvements": BBQ beef kabobs with a red wine sauce.
To be scrupulously fair, there are some actual traditional recipes of Burgundy included: Gougeres, the little cheese puffs that are such a wonderful accompaniment to the wines of the region, and gingerbread, another Burgundian specialty. And some of the soups and salads are at least in the spirit of Bourgogne.
So in summary, if you are planning to visit Burgundy, this book may prove useful, but if you are seeking recipes of the classic cuisine of Burgundy, you had best look for another cookbook.

a good introduction to collecting compacts.......2001-06-21
If you are just getting started with collecting compacts, this is a nice starter book. It breaks down the different categories of compacts (e.g., enamels, novelties, Deco) and gives excellent color examples with good descriptions of what to look for in that category. The small amount of examples also gives a new collector a good foundation for learning about the different makers and styles without getting overwhelmed. If you already have all the other compact books, this one is still worth getting for the pictures and its fresh take on what's out there. There are also nice tips on maintaining and caring for your compacts.
Book Description
Set your imagination flying--with 40 different types of paper airplanes that range from super-simple to sophisticated-looking. There's no need for glue, scissors, or tape; just follow the directions on choosing and folding the paper, and use the principles of flight to get great results. Start with some classic designs, including the dart, basic glider, and gliding toy. Try a modern canard glider, which has stabilizers on the front to create extra lift. For something extra-aerobatic, make a stunt plane that will loop the loop, and even return to you after you launch it. Other high-flying choices include a bomber and a snub-nosed delta. Stunning color photographs of the finished models, plus detailed diagrams and hints, help novice pilots send them soaring.

high-tech, brainy, and fun.......2006-10-03
This library book was beaten up: pencil marks, folds, dog-eared pages, and food stains. I can see how it might be so popular. This book features clear instructions on making so many paper airplanes--I can't even imagine how many classmates fell victim to the pointy ends of these low-tech flying machines, but judging by the many types found in this book, the number must be formidable.
The author uses some highly technical language on how planes work, on aerodynamic principles, on drag, launching techniques, names of axes on these contraptions, etc. For the truly interested reader, there's a huge amount to learn...and for the hands-on or mischievous one, some blueprints to myriad of really neat planes. There's a lot in this book, and while it is quite advanced, even younger readers will have fun looking at the colorful folded paper and the possibility of making and launching an aircraft far more interesting than the old-school original we have seen so many times.

Good Title for Elementary School Kids.......2005-08-03
Some number of months ago, I gave my neighbor's kid some gliders preprinted by NASA as a PR gift (Got them at Oshkosh). It wasn't long before he was stopping me on the way back from work to ask if I had anymore planes! This title fit the bill (more planes). It was in color and precisely precut for little hands. I almost didn't gift it!
-RECOMMENDED-
awesome paper airplane book.......2005-01-10
I happened across this book in a bookstore and could not resist buying it.
To date, I have made the first three airplanes in the book. I'm working on the fourth now. The first few models are rather simplistic to get new people accustomed to paper modeling. The later models are amazing. The curves of the aircraft are to scale and very impressive.
The book is also a great way to learn how to design your own paper model airplanes to fly. I've made a space shuttle using the techniques learned in this book and it looks/flies great!
I should mention that this is not a typical 'paper airplane' book. You do not simply take a sheet of paper and fold it in various ways then fly it. You have to cut out numerous pieces, form them to get the proper curves, glue them (carefully, so that the paper doesn't warp when it's drying), and THEN fly them. Even though that may sound challenging, the first few airplanes are enough to learn the skills necessary for the later (and more challenging) airplanes. And...THE PLANES FLY GREAT when built with patience and care. Mine have survived some great crashes into walls and radiators since I have a habit of launching them indoors (all the planes have a hook for launching via rubber bands).

An example would be nice?!.......2005-06-16
I have no qualms with the book itself, in truth I have yet to read it, but what peeves me is that I have no guarantee or proof that I'm actually buying Super Simple Paper Airplanes. I can't even make a simple glider. What am I supposed to do with a book that is under the assumption that your hand-eye coordination is functioning at the speed of light? What about people like me who trip over their hands because we are so clumsy, where's an example to whet our appetite for this book? So far, all I have is Amazon's summary and other people's reviews. But that is not to say that the people at Amazon or the customer's who bought it are experts, they could be intermediate flyers or beginner flyers. I probably need Making Paper Airplanes 101 I'm so bad.
fun for kids and parents.......2003-07-26
my grade school age son loves this book. good directions for complex folds.
A great book for the paper aviator.......1999-10-16
This book covers oragami,as well as the principles of flight in easily understandable language. The folding instructions, for over 40 planes, are complete and easy to follow and the results are all excellent performers. The book is beautifully illistrated with photographs of the finished planes. The book can be enjoyed by both childern and adults and makes a great gift.
Instructions are clear.......1999-04-08
Paper airplane books and paper folding books can be very difficult to follow. Paper Airplanes instructions are clear and easy to follow. It does help to have played with origami a little but most of the planes use only simple folds.
I have used Paper Airplanes which Amazon shows as publisher out of stock. I'm only assuming that Super Simple Paper Airplanes is very similar. The cover art is the same.

Book Description
The fascination of type for typographers and graphic designers alike has always been the interplay between the form, style and shape of the letterform itself and the content, the message that the type carries as it appears on the page.
Typo-graphics comes at a time when graphic designers are expanding their understanding of typography and taking a measure of control themselves. It explores the work of 24 typographers, art directors, and designers from all over the world who are bringing new graphic and artistic understanding to type design. Radical, provocative, experimental or highly practical, the practitioners featured in the book all share one common idea?that with new tools and new technologies, type can be made to work even harder and on more levels than ever before.
Displaying an amazing array of fabulous imaginative and beautifully crafted work, the book demonstrates how cultural and commercial context influences type design; how type makes pictures as well as words; and how a new, closer relationship between the practice of graphic design and typography is essential for the profession?s progress. The book will give all designers a uniquely inspirational and practical understanding of how to take their work forward in a world where clients demand multi-skilled creativity, and the pressures of time, cost and technology make that not just possible but essential.
