i think this a good book but i have read books from his that blew me a way because it was deep and real. This is the street life but not at its best way of putting it, i alway think that the ending could have been better then it was also. i would tell people to read this book, but read his others 1st. (B-More Careful, and Concrete Jungle)

I'm glad that most of you gave this book 4 and 5 stars; but to me, I found that this book was too long and too drawn out to my liking. Yes, "B-More Careful" has over 300 pages, but I was totally clued to that book. As for this book, I didn't feel the magic of Shannon Holmes pen in this book. I also got a little bit confused about Corey's age from the time he was introduced to the book up to the end. I know Shannon Holmes is trying to keep it street as much as possible, but for me, I feel that this book and "Bad Girlz" were slack ups since "B-More Careful" was totally successful. I do agree that this book should be used as summer reading for most urban high schools and college social classes. But you can be the overall judge of this book if you purchase it or rent it from your libary. Another warning get PAPERBACK, hardbook bites! LOL!

Book Review.......2005-10-06

Never Go Home Again is a book about life in the streets and the consequences that sixteen year old, Corey, goes through. Even though Corey is raised with his two parents and knows what's wrong and right, he decides to enter the drug dealing game to earn some money. By doing so, he is faced into being incarcerated and regretting everything he did. I think Shannon Holmes did a really good job in describing everything that Corey has to go through and describing how life is in the streets.

This story about Cory Dixon, who is incarcerated as a young teen. Cory is given some good advice while in prison, but fails to follow it when he gets out. Our young male teens should take a read they may learn something from it. I was expecting something a little different from Shannon as I have enjoyed his previous books.

This is not "just" a Christmas book. FYI

This book includes:

1. After the Music by Ms. Feehan. A nice romantic story. Well written, easy to read and follow.

2. Lady of the Locket by Melanie George. OMG! I cried my eyes out on this one. It was a wonderful time-travel story. Grab your box of tissues with this one.

Perfectly Goth Christmas Carol.......2007-02-28

As with all Christine Feehan books, this tale is dark and sinister but full of heart and emotion. It's impossible not to be drawn in by the individual characters and the tone of the environment in which they are all cast. This book was impossible to put down. The occult elements weren't treated falsely to frighten the reader. Every "accident" and all the eerie occurences were intricate in design and not easily deciphered. The story keeps you thinking throughout. Each of the cast of characters is fully developed and each evolves and unfolds as the story slowly unravels. As always, Christine delivers an intriguing Christmas tale full of twists and turns, depth and warmth.

Melanie George's tale is no less riveting. For anyone who has traveled to a foreboding castle and felt draughty halls, heard sounds you couldn't explain, stood amongst standing stones, and stared at images in ancient paintings and felt as if they were very much alive, this fanciful tale could definitely haunt you too. It's far more romantic than the first story in this book, but no less absorbing. It's as heartwarming and definitely as haunting. Both were entertaining to read and well worth reading a second time.

Although I purchased the book for Christine Feehan's story, I now find I look forward to reading more of Melanie George's writings.

Spectacular.......2004-01-16

These two stories are two of the best I've ever read. But my favorite was Melanie George's "Lady Of The Locket". This actually made me cry then made me smile. I've read this story 3 times and I only got the book 2 weeks ago. Both stories will keep you turning the pages until your finished. If I could rate this book higher than 5 stars I would.

Rediculously Overwritten.......2003-08-21

I found Mr. Gomes book incredibly overwritten, if such a word exists, but inspiring nonetheless. His approach to the subject was straight forward and simple to follow. However, I found his explanations and justifications began clearly and then wandered. At times it seemed that he was name dropping, and often bragging about the grandeur of alternatively: Harvard, New England, Harvard Presidents, Harvard Students, Hahvad, Hahvad, Hahvad....I was caught betweeen wanting more of his homilies and interpretations of Biblical passages, and disgusted with his constant engrandizement of all things New England. His descriptions of hope and faith, however, were excellent and have inspired contemplation. I encourage anyone with an open heart and mind to enjoy the book for the some well needed enlightment in an overindulged world, but be willing to indulge the author his vices.

Simple But Not Easy.......2003-01-23

What Peter Gomes is trying to impart in his book, The Good Life, is a simple message, unfortunately we live in a complicated world. This book does require careful, thoughtful reading as Mr. Gomes weaves in and out of the complex falsehoods we live with today. If you are looking for a simple answer it is here, if you are looking for a quick fix, go elsewhere. It is not the fault of Peter Gomes that society, and all it has to offer, has woven a perilous web through which all must find their way. This book offers simple answers but they are not easy answers to own up to. This book offers one an opportunity to untangle the web of falsehoods which keep us from the simple truth. Simple does not equal easy, and the truth is rarely easy to take. I highly recommend it!

How To Make the Good Life A Drudge.......2002-06-17

Peter J. Gomes starts off with a great hook, 'The Good Life, Truths That Last In Times of Need.' However, other than reading about the moral curiosity of the best and brightest at Harvard, and these new yearnings for meaning and purpose in his student's life, this book presents great but simple ideas in a complicated mixture of long-winded chapters. The essence of great truths is that they are simple. Gomes forgets this. His book reads more like a text book than a help to renewal or reawakening of morality. Yes, he mentions all the great and good truths. But his writing lacks the simiplicity, elegance and structure of these truths. He asks the questions, 'What do I need to be good? How can I truly be happy? To whom or to what dare I give my ultimate loyalty, my deepest love, my full and total service? There are profound but easily assimilated answers to all of these questions. Gomes spends too much time giving erudite, long-winded answers, when the answers could be as elemental, explicit and beautiful as the Beatitudes. Blessed are they who write about great issues with delicacy, wisdom and discipline, rather than heavy, weighty prose.

I was disappointed in his book. Great truths are profound. But when the virtues are fairness, justice, temperance and fortitude, and the theological virtues of faith, hope, and love, then the Bible, Sunday School quarterlies, and everlasting hymns still say it best -- and without the scholarly overkill.

Florence de Dampierre's The Best of Painted Furniture is a "must have" source book for any decorative paint artist. It is filled with gorgeous photographs of exquisite furniture displayed both alone or "in situ". Each chapter focuses on a different region of Europe, as well as America, with an emphasis on the changing of painting styles from a fascinating historical perspective. It is an inspirational idea book, and is invaluable when trying to capture the feel of a certain era. Famous decorative paint artists from each coutry are discussed and featured, and the evolution of certain styles of painting, for instance chinoiserie, are examined. It is a painstakingly researched book, and the ideas from the past four centuries unfold in a unique and creative way. The author shows how the painted furniture styles of past centuries blend into modern settings, and also examines painted metal and papier-mache furniture, as well as the care of painted furniture, in general. Creative inspiration and practical advice and a healthy serving of decorative painting history gives this book 5 stars, in my opinion. Enjoy!

Very good resource for filet.......2007-06-05

this book includes very good basic instructions, including how to increase. There are lots of beautiful patterns ranging from florals, scenics, geometrics and some for children. Included are curtains, table covers, edgings, and many others. One can easily adapt the filet charts to uses other than those shown. Photos and charts are very clear.

I have crocheted before but everytime I tried to follow instructions on how to filet, I couldn't understand them. This explained it very well and I was quickly making very nice projects. Filet works rapidly and you can really make things quickly.

Inspiring.......2001-12-28

The projects in this book are what I would call 'sophisticated country' in style. I have found the directions to be excellent. I made a doily from this book as my very first project having just learned to crochet. I have made an edging from the book to adorn a linen baptismal gown. I know I will choose projects from this book for many years to come, and have spent many hours just enjoying the pictures.

One of the best filet books on the market.......2001-06-06

This is the one of the most detailed books on filet crochet that I have ever read. It has background, history, comparisons, patterns. The pattern section has a good variety to choose from and are not just doilies. The instructions are excellent and the patterns are just beautiful. The introduction and general "how to" instructions are detailed and have large illustrations. There is a conversion chart of hook sizes, as well as US and British terms for chart symbols and abbreviations. There are complete instructions on how to read charts, do increasing and decreasing, make turns and calculate patterns. It has a great "first project" with one the best illustrated directions I've seen for how to work the stitches and where to actually place your hook for stitches and turns. I would recommend this book regardless of whether you are already into filet crochet or want to learn how to do filet crochet. Chris did an excellent job.

Book doesn't give thread recommendations and yardage.......2001-01-03

This is a wonderful book, but a new edition could be more useful if it listed the thread size and amounts in yards used for the projects as illustrated. While the book lists thread weights in grams, the weight can vary from manufacturer to manufacturer. Before you do a project, make sure to crochet a gage swatch and make estimates based on the swatch.

The book has a lot of ideas in it - many of them from historical or antique sources. Charts were included for some items - but it was mostly photos. Charts would have been nice - but as the book said, they aren't really needed for this type of crochet.

Even a "yarnie" can do this.......2006-07-02

In the crochet world, there are "threadies" and "yarnies". Obviously, the "threadies" work with the fine thread, producing beautifully intricate lace (among other lovely things). "Yarnies" work with yarn (again, obviously). They also make lovely items but they are generally bulkier - generally the fine lace effect is lost in the thickness of the yarn. Most crocheters seem to fall into one group or the other. I happen to be a "yarnie". This is because my wrist does not like the more demanding work of working with thread.

Now that we've cleared that up, let's go on with the review. Rita Weiss has put together a fantastic catalog of filet crochet patterns. There are the more traditional flowers, but there's also bears, cats and lions. There's a short review on how to accomplish filet crochet and then just chart after chart. From these charts, this "yarnie" (me) was able to make a beautiful lion afghan for my beloved. I used worsted weight yarn and the size H hook. It doesn't have the same airy quality it would have had done in Luster-Sheen (for example) but it turned out great just the same and he is very pleased with it.

I would think most "threadies" would love this book. It would give them a chance to explore different patterns. But as a "yarnie", I love it because it produces some lovely results, even with yarn. Plus M's Weiss gives you enough information so you can create a chart of your own. Buy it, you'll love it.

Could Have Been Better.......2006-08-15

It's a nice book visually, but it does lack detail. They tell you who the designer or design house is, etc., and there are some great, unique things in this book, but a bit of information about the hows and whys would have taken it to an entirely new level.

If you are a design book collector, then I'd recommend it. If you're looking for a book that gives you enough detail and instruction that you might learn something from it, then I'd give this one a pass.

Pretty images but no explanation.......2004-07-13

It is not what I expected. The book starts with a two page introduction where the author expose his point of view on how publication design is constantly changing. Then another brief paragraph to introduce us to every topic and on the next pages there's nothing but images with samples with no explanation of the purpose of the publication, or how the creative director solved the problem. The book doesn't give you any insight of the projects displayed in it. In other words, the book is nothing but pretty images with no explanation (other than the creative group and the page number). I was really disappointed because I have seen better publications from Supon Group like "Breaking the Rules in Graphic Design", but "Breaking the Rules in Publication Desing" is really bad.

This book, reasonably priced for the quality of the photographs in it, is a masterful showcase of design. Displaying product design, packaging, brochures, and logos, it is a great guide through the changing world of design. Unlike many books, it quotes the designing firm, and, more importantly, what they were attempting to accomplish with the design. It teaches the budding designer much about the future in the field. I highly reccommend this book, for the future designer, or for someone who just plain appreciates good art.

I purchased this item for personal use as I had previously read other books writen by Sidney Sheldon. On reading 'A Stranger in the Mirror' I noticed that I was picturing the events surrounding the characters story line... because of this I found that it captured my imagination

I have read SS books before. Most of them are gripping thrillers - this one is not like them . its more r like a biography of a star - his failure, pain, agony, success and finally his death. Still it makes to sit & read .. after sometime u feel for him & adore him. Thats the success of SS narration.
The behind the scene of Hollywood is told in detail.Looks like most of them r inspired from real life incidents. The book starts with good suspense speaking abt the incidents in the ship.Then somehow it drags in the middle and goes for a perfect climax.

It's one of the most entertaining book Sheldon has written. I absolutely adore Sheldon, and hope you enjoy this book. In this book, life is not a precious thing, characters die when they need to die. It has a very fast-pace and yet the ending was not what I have expected--it is unpredictable to me at least.

-Is there another cover for the book The Sky is Falling? I dont want to buy the one with the girl laying on the floor.

The dark side of Hollywood.......2004-12-24

This is the behind-the-scenes story of megastar Toby Temple. He rose from poverty to become the biggest entertainer on TV and in the movies, as well as a first-class heel who used and discarded everyone in his path. It is also the story of Jill Temple who ran off to Hollywood with stars in her eyes, but never got her big break, despite experiencing every casting couch in town. She and Toby marry, and then she uses her new power to destroy those who hurt her. Little did she know it would all end in murder.

This novel is a departure for Sidney Sheldon, who usually writes thrillers with beautiful, young heroines facing disaster every few pages. He does know show biz, however, being a prolific Oscar and Emmy-winning writer. Here he creates two characters who manage to be sympathetic despite being completely without scruples, and you'll find the book hard to put down. He carefully weaves characters and details, slowly building to a surprising and very satisfying conclusion. This is a well-written, exciting story about the world of actors, agents, and directors (it's fun to try to guess which characters may have been based on real people). I happily recommend "A Stranger in the Mirror."
