Book Description
Allan Gurganus's
Oldest Living Confederate Widow Tells All became an instant classic upon its publication. Critics and readers alike fell in love with the voice of ninety-nine-year-old Lucy Marsden, one of the most entertaining and loquacious heoines in American literature.
Lucy married at the turn of the last century, when she was fifteen and her husband was fifty. If Colonel William Marsden was a veteran of the "War for Southern Independence", Lucy became a "veteran of the veteran" with a unique perspective on Southern history and Southern manhood. Her story encompasses everything from the tragic death of a Confederate boy soldier to the feisty narrator's daily battles in the Home--complete with visits from a mohawk-coiffed candy-striper.
Oldest Living Confederate Widow Tells All is proof that brilliant, emotional storytelling remains at the heart of great fiction.

A Monumental Event for The Ultimate Survival........2005-09-22
This is the basis for the movie of the same name, an overwhelming preformance in words. Yes, it is comic because the old woman is in a nursing home ready to celebrate her birthday and anniversary of being the oldest Confederate widow. Actually, she'd been a young girl (age 15) when she foolishly married the fifty year old Confederate veteran, who was cruel to her.
This long book (five in all, entitled 'Nobody's Perfect,' ' Time Does That,' 'Give Strength, Lord,' ' These Things Happen,' and 'A Treaty with the World.' It is of monumental length for a first novel. It won the Sue Kaufman Prize from the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters.
It is a work of originality about the virtues of Southerners and has a great moral force. It tells the story of the War Between the States from a woman's point of view and the savage memories she shares of her hard life with a half-crazy Confederate Vet. Lucy Marsden gives an account of her life before, during, and after the Civil War. It is an incredible story of her husband, nine children, parents, mother-in-law, and friends along with her nursing home existence.
War makes men crazy and they take it out on the women in their lives. He couldn't do that to his looney mother who had been burned in her antebellum home which the Union army had destroyed during the war. He chose young Lucy to be his bride because she was different from the other school girls who were flighty and smart enough to steer clear of him. Lucy didn't know what she was getting into, and her mother did not prepare her for the marriage night when she was manhandled and abused by a mean man. She endured many sorrows because of him and yet the oldest widow was 'feisty' as "her outspoken opinions crackle with dark humor."
Lucy maintained a relationship with her mother-in-law's slave, Castalia, who'd looked after the old woman and stayed on to help Lucy as a freed black, like in 'Gone With The Wind.' She symbolized the failure of Reconstruction, meant to show the blacks how to be independent and forge a new life. Castalia had made the Marsden family her family.
Lucy grew into a strong woman despite her weak parents. Her memories of hardship and poverty after the war will remind you of your own hardships (we all have them at one time or another). It was made into the moving movie, and I could emphathize with her as I'd also married an older man and endured some of the same sexual frustration and abuse she did. Maybe that's why old men choose innocent virgins, to lord over. I cried through most of that movie which I watched on DVD recently.
"What the American public ... wants is a tragedy with a happy ending" was quoted in A BACKWARD GLANCE, W. Dean Howells to Edith Wharton. That's what they get in this story as Lucy lived to tell it all -- her way. I looked somewhat like her in the portrait holding the Confederate flag made by a professional at the County Fair just last week.
Allan Gurganus went on to write WHITE PEOPLE and THE PRACTICAL HEART. He also had an Omnibus of short features in one book.
i saw the miniseries on tv first.......2005-09-09
ok, so i was flipping through the channels and my daughter started crying. as i rocked her to sleep,it wasnt the first time i have had to sit through some terrible thing cause i couldnt reach the remote and she was nodding off.I started to watch one of the parts of this miniseries...oh my god i watched a woman give birth and i thought oh, god that seemed real...she was terrified . that woman was lucy marsden. i searched for the rest of the mini series and even tried to see if any of the video stores near me had it to rent.then i turned to amazon, i bought the miniseries ...after watching it i was so in awe at how marriage at a young and innocent age was really portrayed , that i bought the book on amazon too...and it did'nt disappoint!i tell anyone who will listen about the movie and book! that was the best book i have read on a womans struggle with issues of marriage and childbearing since evergreen which i also highly reccomend.
Just tell the story and get it over with!.......2004-10-31
Ordinarily I love a novel I can settle down and read - something really engaging. This book was more frustrating than engaging. The choppy sentences and haphazard storyline were too much to bear past the 6th chapter. For those of you who loved it - I admire your stamina. I just couldn't slog through another page and it's RARE that I don't finish a book.
Too much, too little.......2004-10-20
This book was a big disappoint and maddening at times. I am not one to not finish a book, so I slugged through. Waste of my time. I hated Lucy. I thought she was a pathetic woman with a sad life. Her horrible grammar was excrutiating to read as well, and the author even wrote an entire (long, like all the others) chapter on it! If people from the south really speak like that then it's no wonder northerners stereotypically think southerns are stupid and ill-educated. The entire book jumps around timewise - one minute Lucy is a 90-some year old in the nursing home (and this part of the story, to me, has no interest and appears at random interludes), next she is a young bride, next the story jumps to the Captain and to a time when Lucy was yet to be born. Information is missing - she had 9 children. Only four are named in the book, little information is given as to how or why they are all dead and if Lucy has any grandchildren. While I did find many of the individual chapters/stories interesting, the author draws them out and unnecessarily makes them last 50 pages when they could have been adequately portrayed in 20-30. I could not wait until Lady burned as I thought that would bring me to the end of the chapter.
Zzzzzzzz.......2004-07-14
I bought this book in Bangkok and read it because it was in English. Otherwise I would have chucked it aside. Ditto to what other reviewers have said about the bogged-down prose style, plus several other serious flaws, including but not limited to:
characters that are developed at ponderous length and suddenly disappear, never to be heard from again; the incomprehensible pattern of events which the narrator chooses (giving us every random detail for about a 12-year period and then skipping over a whole lot of stuff that would have been nice to know); stomach-churning prissiness that attempts to pass as womanspeak ("I then scolded my prettiest girl for lisping so"), and a burning-of-the-plantation scene that is laughably stupid as well as flat-out physiologically impossible. Not for the literate.

When the viscount's daughter becomes involved as well, Alex finds himself entangled in a venture that risks both heart and soul.
It's not that Lucia Dashing, youngest daughter of Lord Brigham, wants Alex to go away. She just wishes he wasn't always so close – perhaps a few rooms, or streets, or continents between them would bank the heat of her attraction. But when her brother disappears, she's no choice but to engage the earl in a battle risking her brother, her country, and her love.
Customer Reviews:
Unbelievable--and not in a good way!.......2007-09-16
I'm definitely in the minority here but I thought this book was readable, after all I did finish it, but it is too stupid for words. First of all, the hero, an Earl mind you, is the heroine's brother-in-law. (His brother is married to her sister.) So he is in the family. Yet he has sex with her, ruins her, all without intending to marry her. Even when other family members find out he says baldly that he's not marrying her. They go off and have their big adventure, danger, intrique, death, and mayhem, have more sex (in which he could have impregnated her as he never took any precautions) and at the end of all that he STILL tells her to go back and marry this other creep she was engaged to, doesn't like, and won't possibly be happy with. (And what was she to tell HIM on their wedding night? Oops, I seem to have lost my virginity some where along the way, you don't mind do you?.) The heroine even tearfully tells the hero she loves him. Too bad, I don't want you, go marry the other guy. As if the other guy would even have her, ruined and all. But that is never mentioned. Stupid.
What a guy right? She's even worse. I actually didn't care if her heart was broken because she was just so irritating. She never did what she was told when they were in danger and usually made things worse. She got snippy and righteous at the most inopportune times. But hey, she could ride a horse for 24 hours straight without breaks. TWICE. As if that could really happen.
She goes home, doesn't marry the other guy, and then pines away from June until the next APRIL. He's gone that long and is back in England for six weeks before finding out she didn't marry the other guy. He just assumed she did what HE told her to do so didn't even bother to check if she was ok, happy, pregnant, nothing.
I can't even talk about this stupid book anymore, it's just too ridiculous!
When Dashing Met Danger.......2007-08-23
Another great book by Shana Galen. Well written and keeps you engrossed until the very end.
When Dashing Met Danger.......2007-02-12
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. I have recently fouond the books written by Shana Galen and have purchased a number of them
When Dashing Met Danger.......2006-01-20
This was one of my favorite romance reads of the year, and I'm a romance junkie. Great hero/heroine chemistry combined with a lot of excitement and tension. I don't want to give away the plot, but I can guarantee that you'll fall in love with the hero, Alex, and wish you were the heroine, Lucia. Both are very engaging, interesting characters. Highly recommend.
A fun Regency debut!.......2005-07-08
When Dashing met Danger is an enjoyable book with just the right amount of adventure to keep you turning the pages. The hero and heroine have great chemistry, and debut author Galen makes the secondary characters likeable and interesting. Historical romance readers won't be disappointed in this one!

Excellent Book!!!!!!!!.......2007-06-01
For about the past year I have been a big fan of the Robotech anime series. I first got hooked into the series by reading the novelizations of the series, which includes Battlecry, Doomsday and The Southern Cross series. But when I found out that a rerelease of this book was comming out, I knew that I had to get my hands on it. Form what I read so far, this is an excellent book. I not going to say anything further about it for those who haven't had a chance to read it yet. But definatelly check this out and the other Robotech novels. You will not be dissapointed.

Excellent Sourcebook to the Robotech RPG that allows you to play during The Invid Invasion timeline.......2006-02-26
The Invid Invasion Sourcebook allows players to experience Invid infested Earth with 7 new character classes, (One being a repeat) and over a dozen new skills included. REF and Invid mecha are presented in their entirety, (albiet ships and some noticeable mistakes) as well as some additional weapons and vehicles. Out of the 4 timelines, this book has the most background information incluing all NPC stats and extensive detail on the Invid. Fans of Robotech or the RPG can't go wrong buying this book.
Live the Show Robtech the Next Generation.......2003-11-12
The cartoon was why I got the book. I love the invid, and the mecha in it. The Shadow Alpha is alsome. It also tells how you can take player chearters from Robotech and put them in the fight with the invid. Oh how I love to fight alien scum let me count the ways.
A good book but it has some shortcommings.......1999-12-21
If your going strictly by the TV or novel storyline, you will love this book, even though it is missing some mecha (like Lancer's crashed veritech). The RPG story that Siembieda made up completely contradicts the ending of the TV show.
As a GM, I have found the best way to play this book is either changing the story so that the players replace Scott Bernard's group, or else plating it in another part of the world than North and South America. Even with the questionable exisence of the Vindicator, the book is very good overall
excellent, a must have if you're playing with the Sentinels!.......1999-07-06
This book inludes information on the Regis, more Invid mecha, Invid hives, slave camps, ect. You'll need it to play with the Sentinels or the Return of the Masters.
Book Description
The Invid Regis had succeeded where the Zentraedi and their Robotech Masters had failed. She had driven her warrior horde across the far reaches of space to lay claim to the galaxy's last supply of the Flower of Life and its all-precious offspring, Protoculture.
Earth was conquered, occupied; and it was up to the space-weary veterans of the Expeditionary Force to retake the planet-a world most of them had never seen. Only no one had foreseen the disastrous defeat that would greet the first wave, or the miserable welcome in store for its few and sorry heroes.
But Lieutenant Scott Bernard had survived both, and it was now his mission, as well as his personal pledge, to reach and destroy the Invid hive dubbed Reflex Point. He would soon have a ragtag bond of freedom fighters at his side, but before them were thousands of miles of travel through hostile territory on...The Long Road Ahead!

More Relevant Today Than When It Was First Written.......2006-08-24
A first-hand account by the authors (Chuck and Donna McIlhenny) of their experiences in San Francisco in 1978 when, acting on religious convictions, Chuck fired their church's organist upon finding out that the man was gay. Their church and home were firebombed, they received countless obscene phone calls and death threats, and the church was sued. The book also describes their loving ministry to gays and people with AIDS. It shows what can happen to a city (or a nation) when immorality is given legal santion. Originally published in 1993 by Huntington House.
A SHAMEFUL RANT.......2006-01-19
That this sorry excuse for literature is even in print is explained by the fact that it is self-published. Indeed why would any self-respecting publisher endorse what amounts to self-righteous hate-mongering which, in this case, targets the gay community of San Francisco? The only people who could be "inspired" by the actions of "author" Pastor McIlhenny have a dangerously, sadly skewed view of Christianity which is, last time I looked, a religion rooted in forgiveness and love of one's fellow man. "Wicked" is about neither, and why it is linked to Amazon's gay section is unfathomable.
What a Crock.......2006-01-05
This piece of garbage has no business being placed in the gay book section. Be that as it may, this is a terribly written homophobic rant that even a supreme right winged bigit would find dificult to love. The only thing wicked here are the motives of the hate spewing authors. I'm giving only one star because that's the lowest rating allowed. If I could I'd give this extrememly poor excuse for a novel a negative 10 stars. Take my advice, stay away from this total mess.
An Inspiring Book.......2004-01-05
Pastor McIlhenny and his family faced death threats, harassment, and attempted murder because of their stand for biblical moral values. Their love, courage, and steadfastness in the face of danger and hardship should be an inspiration to any Christian who is serious about his or her faith.

The depths of joy, ingredient by ingredient.......2004-01-12
Knowledgeably compiled and deftly edited by Cheri Huber, The Zen Monastery Cookbook: Stories And Recipes From A Zen Kitchen is more than just another cookbook. It is replete with the stories, traditions, and insights from Monastery Cooks and Cook Assistants expressing gratitude, compassionate awareness, and the search to find peace and transformation in one's own existence. A gradual exploration into the depths of joy, ingredient by ingredient, with simple and marvelous recipes for fruit salads, Tofu Pot Pie With Dumplings, Baked Apples, Italian Cheesecake and so much more, The Zen Monastery Cookbook is a genuinely wonderful addition to the personal and family cookbook shelf.
Great Vegetarian Cookbook!.......2003-11-18
I think this review, written by Adrian Marks for January Magazine (October 2003) describes The Zen Monastery Cookbook best.
"In form, The Monastery Cookbook is reminiscent of such classics as The Moosewood Cookbook and Alicia Bay Laurel's Living on the Earth. Those books, like this one, had a straight-from-the-commune roughness about them. Handlettered, crudely printed but lovingly crafted. . . .
The Monastery Cookbook is a good and useful book. . . .
The Monastery Cookbook covers all the bases, and it does it in an interesting way with lots of helpful anecdotes to contribute to your understanding of the vegetarian lifestyle and way of thinking. Following the recipes, there's no chance of going hungry: they're both solid and diverse. Eastern classics like Mjeddrah and Yellow Dal are interspersed with interpretations of European and American favorites like Pizza, Macaroni and Cheese, Sloppy Joes, Cinnamon Buns and Vichyssoise. Starters, soups, salads, main courses and desserts are all well covered, as well as a section on baking yeast bread that includes quite a lot of good advice.
One thing that The Monastery Cookbook understands and does a good job of sharing are the necessary principles of vegetarian cooking. Now, obviously, different vegetarians will take different paths to get to roughly the same place, but The Monastery Cookbook covers the nuts and bolts of the techniques that will get the results you want, regardless of the physical or philosophical reasons you opted for a vegetarian lifestyle. For example, the How To section covers cooking without oils and butter (not as easy as it sounds, by the way), how to substitute for eggs and dairy products, the basics of cooking with tofu, how to thicken liquids and other essential vegetarian kitchen techniques.
The recipes in The Monastery Cookbook are interspersed with stories written by the monks at the Zen Monastery Practice Center in Murphys, California, that is the monastery in question. All of the compositions are food-related, yet illuminate -- in often humorous and touching terms -- the challenges facing and joys offered up to the contemporary monk. (It's not all silence and tonsuring anymore.)
All in all, The Monastery Cookbook is an excellent addition to the cookbook shelf. The recipes here are diverse and easy-to-follow. Both vegetarians and those just looking for a more healthy approach to food will benefit from the book."

A must for anyone interested in the history of sound.......2000-07-01
Tim Fabrizio and George Paul's 1996 book, "The Talking Machine - an Illustrated Compendium," ranks as the finest book ever written on the history of the phonograph. Lavishly illustrated, it is both authoritative and eminently readable. It is hard to imagine anyone, even the authors, improving upon this work, however they have done exactly that with "Discovering Antique Phonographs." What is so remarkable about this achievement is that this new book serves as a rich sequel to their first, yet stands independently as a superb work on its own. It is not surprising that Fabrizio and Paul were able to come up with hundreds more historic and fascinating phonographs to picture in the new book. What is surprising, however, is that this new volume, like their first, includes a very comprehensive history of sound recording. Amazingly, the authors cover the same historic ground as they did in their first work without being repetitious or redundant. They approach the same story from a whole new perspective, so that while both books are complete and authoritative on their own they are superbly complementary. Although the text is engagingly written, most readers will probably be seduced by the stunning photography and extremely detailed captions. The selection of rare phonographs illustrated in large color pictures is stunning, yet every one tells a story or makes a point -- nothing is an extraneous throwaway just for cheap thrills. Like the first book, "Discovering Antique Phonographs" can be read from cover to cover as a serious work of history, or opened to any page and savored in random doses. In fact, the amount of information to be found in the captions makes the text, wonderful as it is, almost superfluous! These captions offer a vast amount of detail, which these skilled writers bring to life with charm and wonder. Like its predecessor "The Taking Machine," "Discovering Antique Phonographs" is a bargain and a must for anyone interested in the history of the phonograph.

Just a quick note:
After using this book for ideas, several friends have asked how I came up with my attractive and interesting picture arrangements. Two friends have borrowed the book from me and another asked me to send the title to her brother so he could get his own copy. I'd say that my use of the book was quite successful. It's also an attractive coffee table book -- the pix in it are pretty.

Customer Reviews:
Well Worth Reading!.......2001-06-11
I had read some of Mr. Walter's whimsical poetry some years back, but until I discovered this collection, I never knew just how talented and versatile the man truly was! This was an incredible collection of essays, stories, and everyday remembrances written by an amazingly talented and diverse group of writers such as Pat Conroy, Charles McNair, and British author Virginia Adair. I thoroughly enjoyed this book.
