Book Description
Peder Victorious, the sequel to Rölvaag's massive Giants in the Earth, continues the saga of the Norwegian settlers in the Dakotas. Here again, years later, are all the sturdy pioneers of the earlier novel, Rölvaag's "vikings of the prairie"—Per Hansa's Beret and their children, Syvert Tönseten and Kjersti, and Sörine. The great struggle against the land itself has been won. Now there is to be a second struggle, a struggle to adapt, to become Americans.
The development of the Spring Creek settlement in these years is manifested in the rebellious growing up of Peder Victorious. Peder is a beautiful and moving novel of youth and youth's self-discovery. It is the story, too, of Beret's pain and dismay at the Americanization of her children, what Rölvaag described as the true tragedy of the immigrants, who made their children part of a world to which they themselves could never belong.
Out of the inevitable conflict between the first-generation American and his still Norwegian mother, Rölvaag built a powerful novel of personal growth, guilt, and victory.

Sequel to Giants in the Earth: A Worthy Successor.......2001-07-06
After reading "Giants in the Earth" I was anxious to continue the story of the Holm family. I rushed to pick up "Peder Victorious" and its sequel "Their Father's God" and again, I was not dissapointed.
"Peder Victorious" chronicles the childhood of the youngest Holm child, Peder, who is bound for greatness. Through his tribulations with love and sex, to his conflicts with authority this novel brings out all the strife of Americanization.
Perhaps the best built conflict and consequently the most frustrating, is that between Peder and his mother. His mother becomes religiously fanatical at times and consequently drives Peder from the church.
"Peder Victorious" is a powerful novel, written by a brilliant author. It is too bad that I can't read Norwegian, because I'm sure that these novels are even greater in their original language. I would strongly recommend "Peder Victorious" for anyone that is interested in the conflicts of a widening generation gap, but also for those seeking simply a superbly written novel that is entertaining to the end - Enjoy!
Out of the Old World, into the New.......2000-03-09
This book is the sequel to "Giants in the Earth," an engrossing adventure story about the settlement of the South Dakota prairie. Peder turned out to be entirely different, more cerebral, slower, less exhuberant. I read Giants to learn what my ancestors experienced. It turned out to be a truly significant and exciting novel, but I didn't learn much about the Norwegian-American experience. I picked up Peder to discover what happened to the characters in Giant. Instead, I gained a deeper understanding of the joys and agonies that my family must have experienced as they lost their Norwegian language and culture, becoming Americans.
Peder starts off slowly. Revolving around the title character, it uses Peder Holm's experience as an adolescent as a device to illustrate the changes and conflicts within the Norwegian-American community. As he becomes more mature, and his dilemmas become more adult, the story becomes more engrossing.
I have to admit that I set this one down for about a month before finishing it, but I'm ready to read the next one. In many ways, it is a more significant novel than Giants. It was moving and thought-provoking. Great novels are not always an easy read--this one is worth a bit of patience through Peder's childhood years.
Great Follow up to "Giant's in the Earth".......1998-11-24
"Giant's in the Earth" ended with Per Hansa going off into the snow storm. This novel picks up on his son (who was only 4 when his father disappeared) and his growing years and also fills in the gaps that one had to assumed happened in the first book. A very powerful story regarding a Norwegian boy growing up in America. I only wish that Rolvaag extended it a few more chapters. Peder Victorious, all though it moved slowly at times, was well worth the reading!

Pleasant Little Romantic Novel.......2003-05-15
Irene "Rene" Teasey is still trying to recover from her bitter divorce when she learns that her great aunt Irene, whom she never met, has left her some property in Ireland. Rene is unsure if she wants to go, but her teenage twins, Simon and Snow, are determined to go. Before she knows it, Rene finds herself in a quaint Irish hotel with some sleazy real estate agent trying to buy the land cheap. The twins talk her out of it and hustle her to Irene's property where Rene forces a bulldozer off of her road with a shotgun. Rene isn't at all sure that she wants to get involved in a battle with some land developers, but she falls in love with her new house and feels that she needs to honor her great aunt's wishes of keeping on the old tenants in the cottages out back. In no time at all, Rene is developing a backbone and a real personality and really has the opportunity to come into her own far away from her ex-husband and her family. She even finds a new love interest, Shay Kerrigan, whom her great aunt Irene hated for reasons unknown to Rene. Shay seems to genuinely care for her and her twins, but is he really interested in her or in her property? And why do her new tenants hate Shay? As Rene becomes more involved in the lives of those around her, she finds that she had a lot more in common with her great aunt Irene than she ever knew.
This is a charming little romance/mystery novel that most readers will enjoy. It is a little dated as it was originally published some time ago (this is a reprint edition), but in a quaint sort of way. The main characters were quite well developed and the reader will find herself rooting for Rene and urging her to stand up for herself for once. But the supporting characters were absolutely delightful: Irene's twins Snow and Simon were hilarious and so much like teenagers now, sometimes so very grown up and other times so very not and the lovely Ladies Brandel, two very elderly noblewomen who were so very sweet. The tenants were also quite fascinating. This book is also a very clean romance - no swearing, no sex scenes, although there are some references to domestic violence. All in all, a very well written nice little find by Anne McCaffrey.
Oldie but Goodie.......2002-12-04
Very readable but not contempory as it was written about 25 years ago.
The Kilternan Legacy.......2000-06-20
I very much enjoyed the Kilternan Legacy. The story about an American inheriting property in Ireland and leaving the states after an ugly divorce to claim it may at first seem far-fetch but I think that is part of it's attraction. Who hasn't wanted to find out that they are the heir to a fortune or lands in far away countries? The characters are believable and engaging. There are some you want to hug and some you want to hit. I don't think there can be a better judge of whether the characters are realistic. I recommend this book to anyone. There is little or no profanity, a little bit of action, a lot of laughter, and a nice little love story.

Three beautiful first class romance stories.......1997-05-03
This is a wonderful accumulation of three top quality romances. The Ring of Fear is a story about a nice girl who fell on hard times and is traveling the horse show circuit when she meets a wonderful fellow. They then begin a series of adventures including some encounters with a dubious character from a dark period in her past. The Mark of Merlin is another wonderful story. A young woman is orphaned and her legal guardian is one of her father's war comrades. The soldier is expecting a small child but recieves a young woman just under twenty one. A nice, beautiful woman almost twenty one.The Kilternan Legacy is a wonderful romance set in modern Ireland where a young American divorcee woman comes to deal with an inheritance. She soon discovers a lot about herself, her distant relations, and a couple of very handsome men

Book Description
A cross between a human and a bonobo? Carl Sagan and others have speculated: Is it possible? What kind of creature would it be? And how might this affect our world? Kelpie Wilson takes the premise and runs with it in this engaging novel. Primal Tears is the story of Sage, born to a young woman who has volunteered to be a surrogate mother for an endangered species of chimpanzee. The process goes awry, and Sage, a lovable youngster, is neither completely one species nor the other. When her existence becomes public knowledge, she needs all the best characteristics of both species to find a place for herself in our human-dominated world.
Customer Reviews:
Too much.......2007-03-01
I ordered this book because I like Kelpie Wilson's writing for Truthout. When I read it I found myself disappointed; not because of the subject matter but because of the story line. Kelpie has this girl "over the top" and she didn't have to do that; the story would have been more interesting toned down a bit.
I absolutely loved this book.......2007-01-08
What a great book! I loved it. First of all, I found it to be totally enthralling. I finished it the day I started it, even though there were about a thousand things I had planned for the day and needed to get done. The phrase "I couldn't put it down" is a cliche, but in this case literally true. And as I read, I felt drawn deeper and deeper into a primal sense of hope. Not a naive hope, not wishful thinking, but a sense of the immensity of human evolution and the profundity of out interconnectedness with all of life. Thanks, Kelpie. I hope everyone on our dear and endangered Earth reads this book.
Want more stories from Kelpie Wilson.......2006-11-06
Primal Tears takes one to the threshold of believing in the possibility that humankind could feel a kinship with all creatures of the earth, while it exposes the very real disconnect between humans and the natural world that exists in our world today.
The story's heroine, Sage, a hybrid human-bonobo ape is an especially endearing and believable character. She represents more than the mythical hybrids of the past because one can assume that, with today's technology, a like creature could be a real possibility.
Sage's quest to save the endangered wild bonobos is limited by corporate greed, war and ignorance. Like all endangered species, bonobo survival depends on the choices made by humankind to limit population growth and protect natural resources before we, too, become an endangered species.
Kelpie Wilson weaves well-researched fact with fiction into an entertaining and memorable story that leaves one wanting a sequel.
What sf was meant to be.......2006-07-30
For my nickel, the best sf shifts the reader's perspective out of the ordinary just enough so that the human condition can be seen more clearly. Kelpie Wilson accomplishes this with gusto and vision in Primal Tears. Other reviewers here have already given synposes, so let me stick with why you should read PRIMAL TEARS: it's provocative, clever, fast-paced and memorable. It changes the way you see yourself and our world. I read it over a summer weekend, and now find I keep thinking back to it, remembering connections made, powerful images, new ways to think about what it means to be the animal that calls itself human. And PRIMAL TEARS' scope is large: it's not simply a book about chimps--it's about all of us. It's graceful, quirky, and satisfying enough to share a bookshelf with Sherri Tepper's THE FAMILY TREE and Keri Hulme's THE BONE PEOPLE. Kelpie Wilson is a rip-roaring storyteller who weaves her narrative threads together in cinematic style. I can't wait for the movie--will someone out there please turn it into one?
It really made me think........2006-02-26
Primal Tears is an entertaining, fast paced, and thought-provoking novel. The carefully researched settings let the reader experience very real, adventurous escapades in the beautiful Siskiyou mountains while the philosophical sentiment of the novel is expressed by Sage, the human-animal heroine, on page 176. "Left to herself she vacated the house and emerged into the cool spring air....Glad as she was that family and friends were with her in Seattle, it was good to be alone right now. She had spent two years without any human contact at all. Here she was introduced to new people every day: scientists from John's lab, the people from the Pearl Show who had flown out to meet her, and all the people who worked for Richard: ...So many people and so few bears."
This fictional account of a laboratory accident lets us all take another look at how we got here. Kelpie Wilson has a keen understanding of what motivates people, and her story, while leading us through a fun adventure, also leads us to take a fresh look at our relationship to other life-forms in our world, both now and in the past.
It really made me think.

"Acceptance of one's whole experience as the truth".......2007-07-13
The first time I read THE FEMININE FACE OF GOD (a gift from a friend) I browsed around a bit, and saw a reference to the consequences of locking away the fearful experiences of our lives, and the idea that they will come pouring out, like the Furies from Pandora's box - dangerous not because they were freed, but because they had been locked up in the first place.
When I read that, I knew that this was a book that could help shine some light in my life. Years later, and many readings later, I still feel the same way about Anderson & Hopkins' masterpiece. It is as fresh and as timely now as it was then. And my life is richer indeed for having read it and learned from it.
Still Timely after 16 Years!.......2007-07-09
Still worth reading for anyone interested in understanding the complexities and nuances of women's spiritual journeys. A broad range of female spiritual experiences are covered that cross different ages; religious traditions (interpersed with thoughtful reports of how Christian women engage the Feminine Face of God); racial and ethnic backgrounds; marital/family status; and even region of the country (United States). This focus is on the maturing woman's journey--something to which younger women can look forward!
Where is the balance?.......2007-05-12
This is a great book---very inspiring, uplifting and affirming. The authors get it right.
My only question is: where is the balance? We need feminine and masculine energies to balance us, especially since we contain both qualities. God does not only have a feminine face and the authors know this, however I would have enjoyed reading about the balance between the two. We need to bring out both in ourselves.
Nice work, authors! Now, write a book about the balance.
Highly Recommended.......2006-11-22
This book has helped me a great deal. I was raised Protestant Christian, but in recent years have felt a disconnect with the church. As a result, my spirituality was stifled-- something I wasn't comfortable with. This book gave me the opportunity to explore my spirituality, and helped me find a path to the Divine that was sorely missing in my life.
I gave this book four stars instead of five because the first chapter (over twenty pages!) dragged on and on-- I almost stopped reading. I suggest either to start at Chapter 2, or to push your way through Chapter 1, because this book is definitely worth the read.
What?.......2005-03-08
Just below Patricia's inane babble is the same old feminist insult to all historical women. When are feminists going to realize that they don't have to re-invent the wheel? Pick up a copy of Saint Teresa's Interior Castle. I think you will find her simplicity and honesty, without any hint of this silly pychobabble, both refreshing, and far, far more spiritually edifying.
This book is a meandering account that draws no conclusions, but is quick to subtly provide it's rather limited, and dated, ideology.

Customer Reviews:
Beautiful, impressive, but not practical!.......2001-07-14
If you are looking for beautiful dishes to please vegetarian guests (or bosses!, this is a wonderful book. With beautiful pictures, delicious recipies, and easy to follow directions, this is an excellent selection if you are looking for some impressive dishes. It also makes a beautiful gift.
However... as a practical, daily or regularly used cookbook, I would suggest you look elsewhere. For example, if you are hoping this will be a starting guide as you become a vegetarian, I would point you toward the "Vegetarian Times" books... The dishes can be a bit complex and time consuming to prepare. This is a wonderful 'company' cookbook - impressive weekend or special occasion cooking, but a bit much for the everyday rigors of family dining!!!
Wonderful book with great pictures.......2000-03-28
This is a great cookbook as it show photos of almost every step of the recipe. The recipes are complicated, but do-able and impressive. Nice for entertaining dishes.
Good company food.......1999-03-05
Vegetarian friends coming over, and you don't know what to make? Start with this book. Another Anne Willan book that offers great food that is impressive - but I wouldn't use it for every day. Has a great pizza recipe. Good color photos of every detail of preparation. Great for entertaining when you want to make a good impression.

Book Description
In Western culture, the kitchen has always been considered the nerve center of the home. Apart from being a place where food is prepared and cooked, today's kitchen is also used for meals and social occasions. It is a dynamic space that serves many functions, and this affects its layout.
Readers may flip through this copiously illustrated 400 page source book to decide which style is best suited to their own taste, requirements, and budget. The latest trends and decorative concepts are presented: avant-garde or rustic kitchens, small or spacious kitchens, spaces that experiment with color and new materials or take advantage of technological innovations. Daring or simple kitchens, cozy or minimalist kitchens - the list is endless as every kitchen is a world in itself and the only really important thing is that its occupants feel absolutely at ease.
This book investigates how the kitchen has evolved and changed over time by exploring the work of leading designers and architects. It covers which materials are most suitable and popular and which are going out of fashion; color and lighting schemes; which furniture works best in particular kinds of spaces; and the role electrical gadgets and kitchen utensils have played in making domestic tasks easier and improving the quality of life. Here is a treasure-trove of information which will be appreciated by anybody trying to make the most of this inviting and indispensable room.

Customer Reviews:
Beware.......2000-11-06
Readers, please beware of reviews like the one from the "Reader from Danville." How much of this book can be substantiated by reliable trustworthy sources? Probably not much... Reader from Danville, although it is true that Mick Jagger is not the posterboy for family values, you should not succumb so easily to sensationalism of this sort. Please try to read other sources and get a well-informed view before you make such harsh judgments.
HE'S So Cold!.......2000-07-24
As a long-time Stones fanatic, I try to read everything, both good and bad, that is published about them. This book has lots of information that's been printed in every tabloid in the past twenty years (I'm including People magazine in that category). However, read under one cover, the picture that's painted of Mr. Jagger really gives one pause: he emerges as cold, opportunistic, and tighter than a tic when it comes to meeting his financial responsibilites to his many children. His daughter Karis, by the dancer and actress Marsha Hunt, suffers the most. It was a wonder that she not only had him at her recent wedding, but actually treated him like a father and had him escort her down the aisle. He denied his paternity for years, and when the proof proved otherwise, paid a minimal amount for her support and did so under great protest.More importantly, he refused to be a part of her life for many years. The impact of this sad but interesting book is significant;after reading it, I still love his music, but I don't think much of him as a person.
