Lovely.......2007-10-10
This is a beautiful story. It's now one of my very favorite books. This is a story that will fascinate any reader. I read it in one sitting.
Excellent!.......2007-03-17
This book was enchanting, inspiring and heartwrenching. I couldn't stop reading. I recommend this book to anyone looking for a great read.
A sensitive, moving tale.......2006-12-10
Jack Plum was born disfigured and labeled a monster by an abusive mother - but he's created a haven in his cellar, shared with his beloved pet pigs - and is happy until he meets neighbor Holly, who changes his world for the better until the outside intervenes. A sensitive, moving tale of a sheltered boy's entry into a non-abusive world will attract a wide range of leisure readers.
Wow! What a great book!!!.......2006-10-14
My wife bought me this book plus 4 others for my Birthday last June. This was the last of those books that I read and little did I know that I had saved BEST for last! Just a great book! I won't get into the story here because I feel too many reviews give away too much of the plot. Just pick this one up! You won't regret it!
Pigtopia.......2006-04-26
I was so surprised at the good reading provided by this book. I saw it on the "new author" shelf, and I am fond of pigs - the only reason. The dialect of the main character was so much fun to decipher, and having it appear only every other chapter, made it fun to read. There was some very important and valuable philosphy spoken by Jack.
Book Description

Don't miss this dramatic new story from the author of Cold Feet!

Every Waking Moment?.......2006-08-21
I have just recently found Brenda Novak as a new author to read.
This was my second book of hers.......the first kept me reading till the end.......this one .....found a little boring....kept putting it down.....and re-reading pages.....till I finished the book. Have looked up other books she written and will give them a try.
4-1/2 stars, and then some!.......2006-04-07
This book is one of the best suspense/romance novels I have read in years! I only wonder why Brenda Novak didn't ride the top of the bestseller lists with this superior book.
Emma is trying to escape with her diabetic son, Max, from her abusive "husband" Manuel (who can only be described as OILY- this guy really makes my skin crawl!) Manuel relentlessly chases her cross-country...but Emma finds reluctant help in Preston Holman, who is deeply troubled and on a quest of his own. Emma and Preston certainly don't love-or even really like-one another at first, but they DO need each other, and the story is built realistically in that vein.
The way this book is written, I didn't become frustrated with the book when an exasperating situation arose- just got angrier with creepy Manuel. And I was touched by Preston's slow (and therefore believable) change of attitude.
The end of this book is very charming and I cried a little. This is my second Brenda Novak book, and I liked it enough that I'll recommend it frequently.
Every Waking Moment.......2006-03-16
Outstanding book. I have never read anything by Brenda Novak and my first book of hers was not a disappointment at all. It kept me interested throughout the entire book. The bravery of Emma is totally unforgettable.
Great suspense and a villain you'll love to hate.......2006-03-07
Vanessa is on the run from her abusive lover Manuel with their son Dominick in tow. She has reinvented herself as Emma, and now calls her son Max. It won't be easy to hide - Max has juvenile diabetes, and requires medication and insulin. If Manuel pinpoints their location, he can contact local pharmacies to try to locate them. While on the run she hooks up with a fellow tortured soul - Preston Holman, who has spent the better part of the last two years searching for the doctor he holds responsible for the death of his son.
At first, Preston wants nothing to do with the rag tag duo, mostly because Max reminds him of his son Dallas. But a touch of guilt and his instant lust for Emma has him offering them a ride to Iowa. As Max worms his way into Preston's heart, and he and Emma embark on a passionate affair, Preston is able to open up and feel something more than his grief and his need for vengeance.
Manuel, a drug runner with an emasculating mama that makes Norman Bates look functional, will never let his lover get the best of him. He vows to find her and bring her home for punishment. He and his henchman follow up on clues but the trio on the run keeps one step ahead of them. Will their luck ever run out?
With a villain you cannot help but hate, and endearing child you cannot help but love, and a passionate but damaged couple who find a second chance for love, you won't be able to help but become entangled in this story and hope for that Hollywood ending.
A Strong Suspense!.......2006-02-10
Ms. Novak's latest romantic suspense is a page turner and one that will keep the reader firmly engaged and not a tad bit nervous!
Vanessa Beacon is finally going to take charge of her life. She is going to leave her boyfriend Manuel. Manuel is a controlling and abusive man and Vanessa is afraid that eventually he will turn his anger on their son Dominick who in Manuel's eyes is not perfect. Vanessa has another reason to fear him. His family is involved in something that could prove to be very dangerous. She wants to be as far from this man as she can. She is not counting on finding help with her escape from the man she meets in Nevada. Now if she can only forget the look in Prestons' voice or the feelings he makes her feel, or what his kisses taste like.
Preston is on a mission to find the man he holds responsible for the death of his son. He is not looking to play the hero for Emma (Vanessa) or bond with her son Max. Despite his good intentions he can't turn his back on her or the little boy that so much reminds him of his own son. Can these two wounded and troubled people find a balance and happy ending before Manuel catches up with Vanessa?
Ms. Novak is very adapt at creating a storyline that will chill the reader while at the same time tying them to the pages. Vanessa and Preston are compelling characters and little Dominick will worm his way into the readers heart. A strong romantic suspense!

The baddie is pretty obvious..........2006-06-14
While mourning the disappearance of her photographer boyfriend years earlier, Taylor is intrigued by her neighbor, but her heart still belongs to Paul, who went on assignment in South America never to return (and is presumed dead). Shane is an investigator, hired by her mother to not only find out who is sabotaging the family-operated cosmetics company, but also to find the missing daughter that matriarch Vanessa gave up for adoption as a teen.
She travels with Shane to New Orleans where she meets Caleb, a decidedly unfatherly man claiming to be the adoptive father of stripper/hooker Renata - someone her mother in healthier times would pay to be rid of. In fact, she has paid off lovers of both Taylor and her [...] brother Trent to keep the family's pristine reputation. But Vanessa is too happy to see her lost child to realize what a gold digger she is, and falls deeper under Renata's and Caleb's spell; so much so that she alters her will leaving her 50% of the company to her long-lost daughter.
When Renata turns up dead, Taylor and Trent wonder if someone in their midst murdered her for financial gain, and Caleb's hold on their mother is getting too creepy. When accidents start happening to Taylor and a note advising that she is next to die, Shane takes her under his wing. What she does not know is that Shane met Paul in Colombia years earlier in a drug sting operation. As he falls deeper in love with her, he fears that if she knows the truth, she will reject him. She, in turn, is afraid to open her heart and love again. One thing is for sure - all is not what it seems. Could the sabotage, murder, and attacks on Taylor all be the work of the same person?
This was very light on the suspense - you can predict the baddie a mile away; what is intriguing is the reason for his actions and how far-reaching his need for retribution is. Lack of character development also stalls this story - you never really get the feel beyond a selected few characters. Despite numerous references to South Beach (or SoBe as it is overly referred), Sawyer failed to bring this colorful and eclectic locale off the page and bring it to life.
Questionable.......2005-10-14
I haven't found any redeeming qualities yet, about 160 pages into the story. But off the top the premise that a dying woman would take the first person to present herself as her long lost daughter without any proof is far fetched. Guess she's not worried about fortune hunters and to heck with her kids that have built the business to what it is now. As for Shane, he doesn't seem to be too sharp at anything he is supposed to be an expert at. I have read 3 or 4 other books by Ms Sawyer and don't remember being so disappointed.
Great Suspense.......2004-05-10
This book really had me turning the pages. I've read several of her books and I think she's among the best suspense writers out there. I've never been to South Beach, but I found the area fascinating. I was surprised when the killer was revealed. I didn't see it coming.
dysfunctional.......2003-05-29
Although I managed to finish the book, I found the cast of characters for the most part unlikable. Taylor, the heroine, spent most of the time in self doubt. The hero, Shane Donovan, although not well developed, deserved better. Taylor's family took the fun out of dysfunctional.
Hard to get through!.......2003-02-25
I am such a fan of Meryl Sawyer's so I was disappointed to have such a hard time getting through Every Waking Moment. Even the main characters didn't interest me. Look for her older books, i.e. Hide Away.

Book Description
Oppenheimer's first full day at the motel was devoted to television. He located the remote on the bedside table, where it sat beside the enigmatic telephone with its sheet of intricate numeric instructions, and eventually by pressing the button marked power discovered its function. -from OH PURE AND RADIANT HEART
In Oh Pure and Radiant Heart, the three dead geniuses who invented the atomic bomb-Robert Oppenheimer, Leo Szilard, and Enrico Fermi-mysteriously appear in Sante Fe, New Mexico, in 2003, nearly sixty years after they watched history's first mushroom cloud rise over the New Mexico desert in 1945. One by one, they are discovered by a shy librarian, who takes them in and devotes herself to them.
Faced with the evidence of their nuclear legacy, the scientists embark on a global disarmament campaign that takes them from Hiroshima to Nevada to the United Nations. Along the way, they acquire a billionaire pothead benefactor and a growing convoy of RVs carrying groupies, drifters, activists, former Deadheads, New Age freeloaders, and religious fanatics.
In this heroically mischievous, sweeping tour de force, Lydia Millet brings us an apocalyptic fable that marries the personal to the political, confronts the longing for immortality with the desire for redemption, and evokes both the beauty and the tragedy of the nuclear sublime.
Customer Reviews:
Not so pure a book.......2007-07-20
Interesting. Very interesting premise. And Ms. Millet can write well. OK, so far so good. Then I began to skim near the last third of the book. This is the thing: all those wacko creatures showed up and sabotaged this book. 50 pages of wackos could have been cut without anyone noticing, much less caring. Writers say that sometimes characters and events just simply present themselves, show up uninvited as it were. Well that's what seems to have happened here. And they all but trashed any meaning or message in this book which may have been lurking, radiant maybe, or even pure.
two for one- a review I wrote halfway through, and a final thought.......2007-04-16
While this may seem like your everyday, average book about reincarnated physicists, the author goes beyond the plot quite often in her writing style. Sometimes it is in what characters say, and other in narrative observations, but she frequently sticks little nuggets of "other" into the story that make me do a double take and have to reread the sentence and rethink.
One of these is on page 121. "People don't like syllables anymore, mused Szilard." I personally have gone through my life without noticing this, but the author points it out and we can see that it is very truthful. Acronyms, nicknames, abbreviations, all of these are because people do not like syllables anymore.
Another cutting remark from Szilard is on page 114. "It was the last gasp of pure science in this country, uncorrupted by commerce. You know, before the corporations owned the universities." Szilard is often the conveyor of these tart little statements, often in the middle of other conversations. He is also a source for humor. On the same page, he asks, "They grow halibut in the desert these days?"
One line on page 111 that I will still have to think about later is from Ben. "He was hoping that his collusion in the fantasy would set her free to be bored." I am still not sure of all that this sentence means, but perhaps something like he is humoring her until she is ready to go back to their normal, quiet lives.
I feel like this story is going very slowly. This may be because I have to stop every 10 sentences or so and reread the complex sentences such as above. The words are not complex, but the ideas behind them are.
Whatever the reason, at this point it does not seem like all that much has happened besides conversation, eating, sleeping, and Szilard crashing Ben's truck. I may not be as far into the book as I had hoped to be by now, but I am getting the feeling that if I just skipped to the end I would not miss much, as far as action and plot movement are concerned.
There has been a lot going on with Ann and Ben growing apart, and Ann distancing herself from her current situation and moving toward life revolving around three self-centered, egocentric displaced scientists. I am ready for less talk and more action, however.
Part II:
I find this work to be depressing, cynical, and full of gloom and doom. Al Gore's movie was full of unhappy news, but he at least gave hope at the end- what you can do to change this. What is Millet's message of hope? What is she hoping to change?
There are multiple historical tidbits about seals whose eyeballs are crushed and birds whose feet are blasted up into their bodies and the growing likelihood of nuclear assaults. She describes in vivid detail the horror the people in Hiroshima and Nagasaki went through. But she also shows through the story how thousands of people cannot effect change. What does she expect us to do?
I feel like people write books with a purpose. The author puts it well with her discussion of entertainment and enlightenment. I feel this book was not meant to entertain, so it must be the latter. But she drives her point home so many times that it begins to lose its value. Just as she tries to prove the point that there is too much to see for anyone to see anything, she is hitting us with too much for us to feel anything.
This is not the worst book I have read, certainly, but the author's goal and method of achievement do not strike me as "shattering and beautiful" or "genius."
Wonderful premise, too long for its own good........2007-03-24
I read about Oh Pure and Radiant Heart in a blog that is on my regular reading list. The blog writer was more enthusiastic about this book than I have ever heard him be about any other book he discussed. On that basis, I thought it was worth giving it a try.
I *loved* the book for the first 150 pages. I could not believe how much I loved the writing, and how connected I felt to the characters. It is really magical how Millet is able to make the surreal situation so very real. I really dreaded the moment when the book would end.
Be careful what you wish for, right? The second half of the book is unfortunately nowhere near as compelling as the first. It had a little bit the feel of a book where the author had painted herself into the corner. It felt as though Millet did not really know where to go with the wonderful premise that she had imagined. I may be wrong about that, but I can at least say that as a reader it was very difficult to hold on to the thread. I cannot help but wonder if a little bit more help from an editor would have prevented the problem.
In any case, Millet is hugely impressive as a writer. I certainly will not be giving up on her work. Recommended (with my caveats above) for fans of smart speculative fiction. If you like a lyrical tone to your prose, Millet should appeal to your taste.
vivid and compelling.......2006-05-22
this is a richly imagined, often deeply funny, book about a deadly serious subject. highly recommended!
Beautiful, important novel.......2006-05-03
I haven't read anything this ambitious and successful in a long time. The ending took my breath away. Reviewers who dismiss this ingenious book by calling it names reveal more about themselves than about this graceful and extraordinary story. Finally, a writer not afraid to take on big things! Highly recommend.

Another Mr. Food classic.......2002-07-03
I have about 8 of his cookbooks.
Convenience Food Cooking.......2001-11-04
Before buying this book you should be aware that Mr Food's favorite ingredient is a can of soup - tomato soup, cream of mushroom soup, and onion soup being his favorites. Most recipes consist of a couple of common prepared items such as soup, soy sauce, canned fruits and vegetables, or bottled dressing combined with the chicken. There are a handful of simple from scratch recipes, but the bulk of these recipes are similar to those found in advertisement to promote the use of a particular convenience item. These are for the most part very good versions of this style of cooking and I enjoy using them every now and them. Some people think this is the only way to cook and others turn up their nose at it. Just be forewarned that while you will get quick and tasty, you are not going to get fresh and healthy or anything remotely authentic.
Mr. Food has saved me from a lifetime of frozen dinners!.......2001-07-06
Can we talk? I sooo can't cook. Not at all. I have trouble boiling water and scrambling eggs. And even I can make a recipe out of this book.
Mr. Food is better (and funnier!) then my high school home ec teacher. His recipes are simple, with basic ingrediants, and most importantly - are delicious.
I have a few stand by favorites and every now and again, I'll try a recipe that's "new". This is by far one of my favorite cookbooks.
Whether you're an experienced cook or a (ahem!) novice like myself, I highly recommend this book.
Mr. Food, a necessity for all new cooks!.......2000-05-31
Art Ginsburg's "Mr. Food Cooks Chicken" is a must for new cooks and accomplished cooks. I have purchased this book, and several other Mr Food books, for each of my three daughters and several other young people. As an accomplished chef it is easy to prepare a dish, it is harder to pass this on to a new cook. All my daughters and others that I have passed "Mr. Food Cooks Chicken" on to have thanked me over and over again. The book handles scores or recipes for chicken. Each recipe is simple, and explained clearly so that a new cook can understand the process. For those of us that think we are masters of the four-burner, this book will introduce new recipes that we may have heard of or tasted before but didn't know how to reproduce. Yes an old dog can learn new and delicious tricks with chicken thanks to "Mr Food".
No new cook or old cook should be without this book in their kitchen.

Thorough attention is paid to the restoration of wrought iron through discussions of techniques and various materials. Balconies and stairways, arbors, fencing, and church gratings provide exceptional opportunities for beautiful wrought iron artistry. Look and learn, and be inspired.
Product Description
Tiziano Matteazzi lives and works in Vicenza, Italy. He learned blacksmithing from his grandfather, father, and uncle. He also studied under the great Tito Perlotto at the School of Wrought Iron (scuola di ferro battuto)at Trissino.
This beautiful book, a photographic anthology of Matteazzi's work, shows this artist-blacksmith's range and depth.
Like other books on individual artist-blacksmiths, the interest here for other smiths is in seeing just how varied, imaginative, and skilled one person can be.
This book is in Italian but it matters very little as the only real text is a short introduction and the captions. This is basically a book of photos.

Bonus: a mini gallery of project ideas! 128 pages (all in color), 8 1/2 x 10.
Customer Reviews:
Not too bad, But..........2007-01-18
The layout of this book is not standard to other quilt books- pattern and instructions together. It does have some good ideas and cute patterns; however, directions are given at the very beginning, then followed by the patterns leaving the reader to guess what category it falls under. ie: The paper-piecing patterns are shown 3 to a page (small); but the reader must return to the beginning to discover they must enlarge the piece to achieve a particular block size and how to construct it. I reviewed the book first from the library, and I am contemplating purchasing a used book if the price is right from Amazon. I would not recommend this for a beginning quilter.
128 Pages of Eye Strain.......2003-07-04
I purchased this book, sight unseen, because I am a collector of quilt block books. I love reviewing the books and planning my next project, this book, claiming to have '336' quilt blocks seemed to be ideal. Well, I was wrong. Dead Wrong.
The layout of this book is TERRIBLE. It features six eye-poppingly colorful blocks per page which most of which are not pieced, but are merely DRAWN. There are illustrations which claim to be patterns but there are no actual measurements included. Sure, this looks good....But...The reader is left wondering how to put it all together.
I think it is disingenuous NOT to show completed pieced blocks in a quilt block book or measurements. I probably will try to put a couple of the "Tree" blocks together, but I think it will be challenging.
Recommended: No. A good 'idea' book, but not for careful piecers, and certainly NOT easy to complete in 10 minutes!
It has great pictures and ideas but........1999-03-20
This book gives you great ideas. But quilters are a busy bunch of people. It would have been a much better book if the author would have included some patterns. Majority of the ladies in my quilting club look for a pattern and have a terrible time making their own patterns. If I would have known it didn't contain patterns I wouldn't have purchased it. But I did so thru a book club. I design and make personable quilts and have been in the business for quite some time.

Children's dream rooms..........2000-12-11
THESE are what I dream of children's rooms looking like! This is not really a how-to book, but more of an idea book...to be honest, I don't even think I read it, but spent a couple hours poring over the beautiful pictures to get ideas for my 2-year old daughter's new "big girl" room. There are sections on nurseries, girls' and boys' rooms, and also a few do-it-yourself decorations for good measure. If you enjoy a look that is nostalgic, colorful, and slightly cluttery, then you will love this book!
Very Inspirational!.......2000-01-13
This is a terrific book to have on hand if one is looking for style and decorating ideas. There's not much in the way of actual how-to's, but a wonderful source to page through for all of those idea-starters. A surprising variety of decor and styles are represented.

Ugh!.......2001-01-27
This book is so hard to read and the pictures are even hard to look at. Who wants to read text that is all caps? Not me. I recommend this book to amateurs (like myself) who want to see a great example of how irritating this is to readers. Check it out from a library and make sure you return it on time, because it's not even worth accruing late fines on it.
Save your money.......2000-07-06
I found this book to be an overpriced disappointment. There is very little in the way of actual information. Much of the type is set in all caps crammed together in a way that is sure to give the reader a headache. Images are almost all very tiny and tough to make out. The text is repetitive and uninformative. Save your money and surf the web to look at examples of graphic designers web sites to get inspiration for creating your own.
Design Portfolios Help Somewhat.......2000-06-27
I got some great ideas from this book, but nothing really new. Great for newbees but not for advanced web developers.
A great guide for creating a perfect portfolio.......2000-06-26
I bought this book to help me pull together a digital portfolio for myself. The book helped me a lot. It gets you started, gives you dos and do nots and has many good ideas on what will make your portfolio stand out.
