Book Description
When we first meet the extraordinary young actress Suzanne Vale, she's feeling like "something on the bottom of someone's shoe, and not even someone interesting." Suzanne is in the harrowing and hilarious throes of drug rehabilitation, trying to understand what happened to her life and how she managed to land in a "drug hospital." Just as Fisher's first film role-the precocious teenager in Shampoo-echoed her own Beverly Hills upbringing, her first book is set within the world she knows better than anyone else: Hollywood. More of a fiction montage than a novel in the conventional sense, this stunning literary debut chronicles Suzanne's vivid, excruciatingly funny experiences-from the clinic to her coming to terms with life in the outside world. Conversations with her psychiatrist-"What worries me is, what if this guy is really the one for me and I haven't had enough therapy to be comfortable with having found him?"; a high-concept, eighties-style affair-"The only way to become intimate for me is repeated exposure. My route to intimacy is routine. I establish a pattern with somebody and then I notice when they're not there?" Sparked by Suzanne's-and Carrie Fisher's-deliciously wry sense of the absurd, Postcards from the Edge is more than a book about stardom and drugs. It is a revealing look at the dangers-and delights-of all our addictions, from money and success to sex and insecurity.
Customer Reviews:
Not worth all the hype .......2007-09-14
I found this book very boring and pointless. I kept hoping that the story would pick up or the ending would be exciting but I was left unimpressed. Many new characters and story lines were introduced in each new chapter, yet they never went anywhere. The novel was written well, but left me uninterested.
Enjoyable, insightful writing, and great showbiz gossip........2005-11-27
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It moves quickly and surely (even if its heroine doesn't!), has smarts and wit to spare, and finds a nice balance between portraying the dark side of addiction and the smart-alecky narrator's attempts to deal with it.
Along the way, you're treated also to early-1990s Hollywood gossip, if you follow it closely enough to figure it out. As in a roman a clef, Fisher sneaks dish about famous figures into every page, and if you read between the lines you can catch the jokes about Geena Davis, Harrison Ford, etc.
Gossip aside, though, this is just a well-written book. It moves quickly, making it a great read, and the humor in it is so smart and black that Fisher's characters emerge as simultaneously courageous and unsure of themselves. This makes her protagonist especially endearing, and since the book in anchored around her, it's great that she's so sympathetic.
I recommend "Postcards from the Edge." It takes a unique look at addiction by spotlighting its sources in and effects on the psyche and self-esteem.
Cutting-"Edge".......2005-06-08
Suzanne Vale is troubled but very appealing and relatable in this first incarnation. Her wit is sharp and speaks to issues most women have but few will acknowledge. The first time I read this I was fairly blown away by the insight and brutal honesty, and more importantly the wry approach to both. I felt vindicated in seeing some of my issues validated by Suzanne's unabashed articulation of them (The "Why? Why would you think I would want to know that?" exchange... "What is it about me that looks like I would want to know there are other smart pretty girls? Because I'll fix it. I'll change it. Is it something I'm wearing? Is my lip curled in a certain way that says, 'Got to tell her there's another bright woman around'? Why would you think I would want to know that a beautiful, gorgeous, supermarket-famous face from television is as bright and funny as I am?")
One of the earlier passages taking us first-person through a fellow drug rehab patient's series of rationalizations that takes him from swearing off drugs through doing endless hits of coke and following that up with ecstasy, heroin and whatever was in his dealer's medicine cabinet was really quite impressively executed; its few pages were far more potent than the entire D.A.R.E. program ever was.
Re-reading this years later and after reading "The Best Awful," I felt that "Postcards" was a little too self-congratulatory re: the protagonist's clever rejoinders. But I think my mid-'90s 25-year-old self would still find it seminal and deeply resonant.
Hollywarts!.......2005-04-01
Carrie Fisher's semi-autobiographical first novel gives a behind-the scenes look at the gloom behind the glamour. The only thing funnier is the movie. Fisher shows a wicked sense of humor as well as a talent for storytelling. Of course she knows the business; she's been known to act in films.
Not in the Hollywood scene BUT..........2004-03-01
Taylor Weston, A reviewer
I could swear that other than the glitz and glamour this book was written from personal experiences i have had. Ms Fisher shines through in this wonderfully written, poignant account at life. A remarkable Actress...even better writer.
I also recommend Nightmares Echo and Bastard Out Of Carolina because of the style of writing

The Runaway Daughter is wonderful.......2006-02-18
The Runaway Daughter by Anna DeStefano sensational follow-up to her previous book The Unknown Daughter.
For month's coworkers Chief Deputy Angie Carter and deputy Tony Rivers have developed a close friendship. Just when things start to heat up, Angie pulls the breaks on an affair since she is planning to run for Sheriff soon. But Tony's presence still lingers on her mind, even though he is ten years younger he makes her feel more alive then she has had in ages. After being dumped by her fiancé after she is unable to have children she is just amazed that a playboy like Tony is even interested in her.
Tony Rivers has always been the love `em and leave `em kind of guy. The life of the party. Tony and his older brother were orphaned at a young age and while Eric became the responsible one, Tony partied. With his brother and new wife out of town, Tony is responsible for the care of their teenage daughter Maggie. When a terrified Maggie witnesses her best friend being gunned down, she turns with her friend's baby in tow to her Uncle Tony.
Tony tries to handle this on his own, afraid that his niece will bolt with the baby. She made a promise to her friend to get the baby to her parents to care for. But Tony realizes he needs Angie's help in order to keep Maggie alive. As Tony and Angie try to capture the killer they turn to each other for comfort. Can this one night turn into something more?
Anna DeStefano writes with such feeling that you are drawn into caring for her characters. Their trials and chemistry will hook you from page one. This book is so emotional that it will linger with you long after you turn the last page.
intriguing police procedural romance .......2006-02-16
Oakwood, Georgia Chief Deputy Angie Carter and Deputy Tony Rivers know they should not have a relationship outside of friendship and the office as she is his superior. However, they are attracted to one another though she is also a decade older than him and has been burned once before by a player, which is how most people describe Tony.
Tony's teenage niece Maggie talks with her friend single mom Claire Morton about the overdose death of Travis Reynolds; Claire believes her baby's father Sam Walker is the prime county drug dealer. When Sam and a business associate Marcus come home, bullets fly; Claire is shot and is seemingly dying, Marcus is dead, and Maggie flees with baby Max. Maggie turns to her Uncle Tony for help. He, in turn, brings in his boss to help protect his niece and the infant while they investigate the drug dealing and killings by Sam.
THE RUNAWAY DAUGHTER is an intriguing police procedural romance starring two likable protagonists and a strong support cast. Tony is a misfit who knows he can never be as good as his role model, his older brother; while Angie sees how deeply he cares and loves behind his nonchalant façade, but knows she must not pursue a relationship with a direct reports employee. The tension between them as they work the case makes for a strong thriller. Though readers will wonder why the pivotal scene happened where it did as the intelligent Sam would never risk his lucrative business by killing Marcus in his home, fans will enjoy this strong older woman younger man cop romance.

What is that Blue Stuff,Anyhow?.......2007-05-14
Foreigner
Foreigner (1994) is the third and final book of Sawyer's Quitaglio Ascension trilogy.
In Foreigner Sawyer borrows elements from real Human History to add bits and pieces to his characterizations. In this one he borrows bits and pieces from Guy de Chaulia, Sigismund Schlomo Freud Also; there is a little Japanese Kamikazes. There that's enough clues. Go out and get this book!
If you enjoyed The Fossil-Hunter and the Far-Seer as much as I did, you'll want to read this concluding book.
Next comes... nothing. Oh, well, I'll check out his short stories in Iterations, maybe read Calculating God, again. Or possibly the Neanderthal series ,hmm.
Sawyer does let his Liberal leanings peek out at you in this book, but not terribly so. The nose of the camel does get snuck under the tent.
All in all this is a delightful ending to a very pleasant trilogy.
Justice must be blind.......2007-04-24
Foreigner is a satisfying conclusion to the Quintaglio series. How to get off the moon before certain destruction? How to deal with a newly discovered dinosaur species? Why do the gest Quintaglios have such rage and then contrition when seening those new dinosaurs? It's not just dinosaurs, it's pyschology and family and thinking outside the egg. Loads of fun and lots of thought in this terrific read.
Agreeable conclusion to the trilogy.......2007-03-31
An exciting and interesting conclusion to Robert Sawyer's trilogy about intelligent descendants of the dinosaurs. Naturally in the way that fiction often does, it wraps up the loose ends almost too well. I was interested to discover that this is some of Sawyer's earliest published work. It has been a while since I read any of his more recent work but I think there is a contrast - the protagonists in the Hominids series are not nearly as certain or guaranteed of success.
What actually happens in the book? It would be difficult to say much without giving away a lot of the plot, but from the blurb you can doubtless gather that the Quintaglios discover they are not the only intelligent species on their moon. What they find out about their neighbours leads to very difficult times indeed, and threatens the goal of escape from their doomed home.
A quest for understanding.......2006-01-18
As the concluding work in the Quintaglio series of planetary destruction, this book draws together many elements introduced earlier. Although ostensibly a dinosaur, Afsan's character grows more human with each volume. As a reflection of current Euro-North American society, Foreigner is hard to beat. That reflection may be too vivid for some. Sawyer has a fine talent for portraying reality, whether on an imaginary planet or right next door. This series remains a challenging read.
A trilogy of sub-plots keeps your interest alive through the main theme. The saurians are learning about their own world while striving for the means to escape it. Sawyer depicts the violent mental disruptions of racism with talent. Although dinosaurs mate for reproductive ends, he manages to introduce a new feature of their lives, jealousy versus loyalty. While the accounts of Novato, Afsan's mate and his son Toroca are compelling, it's the relationship of Afsan, the continuing primary character in this series, that renders this book worthy of note. His association with the practitioner of the new therapy of psychology makes hilarious reading. Mokleb, the 'therapist,' is a marvelous rendition of the money-grubbing cockroaches that infest Earth's cities today. She's a Freudian, of course, with all the fanciful ideas of conscious and subconscious ['high' and 'low' mind] and dream interpretation that has bled many a bank account dry during the past century. Her negotiation with Afsan over payment for the therapy sessions is too vividly real to be missed.
If you are new to Sawyer, by all means start the trilogy at the beginning and follow it through this volume. You will learn much about your own world as Sawyer reflects it in Afsan's. The series is a good addition to any library of speculative fiction. The only truly speculative part of Sawyer's works is the 'people' portrayed and their location in the cosmos. [stephen a. haines - Ottawa, Canada]
Finally, the conclusion!.......2005-09-14
I've waited years for this, and it was worth the wait. Some people perhaps didn't read Sawyer's Quintaglio series when it first came out, because all they saw were the dinosaurs on the covers. But the fact that his characters are intelligent saurians is almost incidental. This whole series is really a discussion of science and faith, and an examination of what breakthroughs in science would be like if they were really crucially important (what if it was a matter of life and death how the solar system was arranged -- not just for Galileo, but for EVERYONE [the plot of FAR-SEER]; what if the truth of evolution over creationism was the key to a species' survial [that's FOSSIL HUNTER]; and what if a breakthrough along the lines of psychoanalysis was the only thing that would stop a genocide [the current volume, FOREIGNER].) All three are wonderfully told, but FOREIGNER holds the most surprises and twists, not to mention packing the biggest emotional whallop. Bonus: a comprehensive "Quintaglio Concordance," drawn from all three books, at the end. As the cover quote from a Canadian newspaper says, "A fine end to a brilliant series."
Book Description
Individuals who are in religious leadership positions will immediately recognize the dilemmas or paradoxes described in this book. The good news is that Malony offers sound practical advice on how to deal with them. This book is accurately descriptive and helpfully prescriptive.
--Douglas Lewis, Wesley Theological Seminary
Malony suggests ways to turn destructive conflict into creative tension. A helpful guide for every religious leader struggling to make sense out of the colliding interests that buffet many congregations and other not-for-profit institutions.
--William E. Hull, Samford University
As a leader you must also challenge individuals to make uncomfortable choices in the service of doing God's work in the world.
Maloney identifies eight central paradoxes that all religious leaders--both lay and ordained--must confront. The author shows how these paradoxes, when viewed as either/or choices or struggled against, can whipsaw the leader, tearing the ministry apart. However, embracing paradox and accepting it as a gift allows religious leaders to deal successfully with conflict in their roles, and in so doing, break through to a more powerful connection with those to whom they minister.
H. Newton Malony is senior professor of psychology at Fuller Theological Seminary, a licensed psychologist, and an ordained United Methodist minister.
Customer Reviews:
Hard to Categorize Except as "Good".......2003-08-12
In "Living with Paradox," H. Newton Malony seeks to take religious leaders from "the tyranny of the OR to the genius of the AND." He explores eight paradoxes of religious organizations and religious leadership. The table of contents gives a sense of the book's scope:
1. Religious leadership and paradox
Part One: Paradoxes in the Religious Leader's Role
2. Person and position: being true to oneself and to congregational expectations
3. Prophet, priest, and king: playing three roles that become confounded
Part Two: Paradoxes of Perspective
4. Inclusivity and exclusivity: appreciating both uniqueness and universality in faith convictions
5. Timely and timeless: applying the Bible's eternal truths to present circumstances
Part Three: Paradoxes Built into the Structure of Religious Congregations
6. For-profit and not-for-profit: balancing the books while serving a larger purpose
7. Person and organization: running an efficient organization in which people feel deeply recognized
Part Four: Paradoxes of Congregational Mission
8. Product and process: valuing ends and means equally
9. Mission and maintenance: moving the congregation toward achieving its goals while fostering goodwill and group cohesion
10 Conclusion: Leading others to double vision
True to its paradoxical theme, this book defies easy categorization. Part one focuses on the nature of ministry and ministers. The chapter on "timely and timeless" takes up the subject of preaching, while the next chapter, "for-profit and not-for-profit," moves on to financial issues. Many of the book's subjects tend to be issues for church conflict, and chapter seven is partly about the process of church conflict. You will not find a comprehensive treatment of any single subject in Living with Paradox, but I'm certain the book will spark some new ideas for reflection.
As someone who is preparing for ministry, I found the book very helpful. I would easily recommend it to any minister or ministry student. I also think Living with Paradox would be of interest to board members, committee chairs, or other lay leaders in a church.

Enjoy Chicken dishes, Beef dishes, Pork dishes and Seafood dishes. This makes a great gift item. It also allows for creative cooking for friends and family.
Book Description
You don't have to go to school to learn the art of Chinese cooking from a professional teacher if you just want to know how to cook for your own family or to entertain friends. In fact, almost without exception, Chinese women learn the skill by watching and working together with their mothers or grandmothers.
By the time they have become wives or mothers themselves, the most diligent ones will try to improve their techniques by consulting cook books and exchanging experiences with their neighbors and friends. In this way they eventually become as skilled as the best chefs in the established restaurants. It should be noted, of course, that most of the well-known chefs in famous restaurants are men, because many men in Chinese homes are just as good at cooking as their wives.
This set of Learn to Cook Chinese Dishes has been compiled by master chefs. They have used simple explanations to introduce the ingredients, ways of cutting, and cooking procedures for each Chinese dish. Readers can follow the directions and before long they are sure to become skilled in the art of Chinese cooking. The total set consists of ten volumes, covering freshwater and seafood dishes, meat dishes, vegetable dishes, courses made from soy beans, soups, cold dishes, pastries, dishes of eggs and poultry meat, food carving techniques and family banquet dishes. This particular volume presents more than forty dishes all made of aquatic products.
The major aquatic products in the book include fish, shrimp, crabs and shelled fish, and the first three categories include both freshwater ones and those from the sea.
The ways of cooking aquatic foods vary according to the size of the ingredients. If the sea item is small, as in the case of shrimps, maintaining tenderness should be the top priority. Consequently, quickly stir-frying with different sauces or steaming techniques should be adopted. Typical examples are steamed fish, stir-fried shrimps and quick-fried shrimps with distilled grains sauce. In the case of a large fish, either part of it such as the head or the tail or the whole fish can be cooked in short time. Braised fish in soy sauce is one example.
Shrimps can be cooked in different ways with the shells on. Or the shells can be taken off and the shrimps are wrapped with egg white and/or cornstarch to stir-fry in lukewarm oil. This way their fresh tenderness can be preserved. Otherwise the longer they are cooked, the tougher they become.
All aquatic products carry a fishy smell. To remove this, cooking wine, scallions, ginger and similar fish-smell removing ingredients are essential.
Bony and fine-meat fish can be used to make soup so that, after cooking, it will be easier to remove the bones. Smallsized fish can be deep-fried so that the bones become crispy and edible.
Large fish that have thick meat can be cut into different sized chunks, slices, shreds, cubes, etc. Or they can be made into fish fluffing as an ingredient. Such methods of cooking allow the meat to fully absorb the contributing ingredients....
All pages of the book are spiral bound and double coated for easy clean-up of any spills. Color Illustrations

Book Description
Perhaps the most significant collection of graphic art in the world, the Albertina in Vienna is famous for the unsurpassed quality of its pieces. It comprises around 65,000 drawings, a million prints, and countless other works on paper, ranging from the Late Gothic period to the present day.

What a Treasure!.......2000-07-24
This book is a hidden treasure. I was not familiar with the Albertina or its collections before a friend of mine gave me this book, and the exploration of this gorgeous collection has been a treat. The prints selected for the book are of unrivalled quality, ranging from Durer to Picasso, this one volume covers the temporal and stylistic range of drawing and prints more intelligently than I've seen before. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who likes drawings and prints, or even anyone who likes art at all as a testament to the skill, ingenuity and imagination of mankind.
Albertina : The History of the Collection and Its Masterpiec.......2000-03-28
The book is well footnoted. The historical content is quickly to the point and foundationally points the reader to the essence of the museum, collecting master pieces. I visited the museum at the beckoning of a friend in 1969 and fell in love with the plates of Durer. They are presented to the visitor in a leather bound book and are place,at your request, on a table for your review. Some are these plates are exquisitely displayed in the book. It makes me want to return to enjoy Albertina once more.

Customer Reviews:
A nice memoir.......2007-05-12
J. D. Sumner is beloved among gospel music fans for his bass voice and sense of humour, and Elvis Presley was one of his biggest fans. J. D. and the Stamps Quartet toured and recorded with Elvis from 1972 until the end in 1977. This book is full of fun stories about those years, and the friendship the two singers had. It is not an Elvis biography, many writers have done that elsewhere, just a collection of reminiscenses from one of Elvis' closest friends. It becomes clear early in the book how much Elvis idolized J. D., always referring to him as "Mr. Sumner", even though there was only a few years separating them age-wise. After concerts, Elvis would invite the Stamps up to his suite to sing gospel all night. Gospel was his first love, musically, and he liked to feature the Stamps in his shows regularly (singing "Sweet, Sweet Spirit" or "Why Me Lord"). It might surprise some fans to read that, yes, Elvis was a Christian, especially when we've been inundated with tabloid type tales about Elvis' later years. J. D. was there, he knew what the man was really like, not perfect by any stretch of the imagination, just a believer struggling to live out his life the way he should. Although J. D. has passed on, I'm confident he and his friend Elvis are singing together together again, singing praises to the King.
J.D. Sumner shares about his time with Elvis Presley.......1999-04-19
You've read about Elvis' love of Southern Gospel music. This book tells how The Stamps Quartet and others came to be a part of the excitement we knew as "Elvis". It tells of the ups and downs of travelling. the business end of things, the generosity of Elvis Presley. You'll gain knowledge from this book and you'll be glad you have it. I too am glad, but mine is signed to me by Mr J.D. Sumner. You'll see pictures of the Stamps Qt and Elvis, the Stamps tour bus with TCB on the side. Even a picture of the check Elvis signed, to J.D Sumner, as a down payment on the tour bus. Add this to your collection, you'll be glad you did.
