___________________

On a November night in Egypt, 414 A.D., one of history's most brilliant individuals was assassinated. Her name was Hypatia, teacher and scientist of the fabled Great Library of Alexandria and the last glimmer of hope before the Dark Ages.
___________________

The Roman Empire is crumbling, the fragments of the classical world regrouping in Egypt when Thasos, son of an ill-fated scholar, meets Hypatia of Alexandria. Astronomer, mathematician, and philosopher at a time when women were shunned from learning, Hypatia is a daring visionary in a world about to change forever.

As an insidious power-struggle erupts between church and state Hypatia finds herself at the forefront of battle, but she is not alone. Those who cherish her, who will remember her, become her allies - including the powerful Governor Orestes, who keeps his consuming love for her as secret as she keeps her feelings from him.

Remembering Hypatia is a vivid retelling of a now-forgotten historical tragedy, when courage stood against fear, when the legacy of the wise vanished in the dark. Author Brian Trent resurrects the ancient world's most famous metropolis and explores the final days, not just of a brilliant mind, but of a lost era. . .

BASED ON THE TRUE STORY

5 out of 5 stars The Murder of Reason.......2007-07-25

The great city is a peaceful melting pot of mankind, brimming over with a variety of race and religions. In a world where bearded barbarians wreak senseless violence on faraway cities, this place is a bastion of civilization and tolerance; rational people feel lucky to live in safety from terror here. But still, the danger of religious fanaticism is growing, and a woman scientist and teacher will soon find herself in mortal danger, partly because her free-thinking ways threaten the power of certain theological leaders, but mostly because she is a woman who dares to stand out among men ... Is this a story of our modern times, a warning of how religion can be used to teach hatred and given as an excuse to commit evil deeds? Not exactly ...

This is a story of Egypt in 414 A.D. The great city is Alexandria; the terrorists are Visigoths; and the fundamentalist fanatics are early Christians, plying their growing strength against the science and philosophies of intellectuals. First the Alexandrians lose their freedom to worship as they wish; then their freedom to think as they wish is threatened. And Hypatia, a woman of remarkable brilliance and charisma, pays the ultimate price for her intelligence, her unorthodox beliefs, and her gender. Although this story happened nearly two thousand years ago, we Americans can shiver with apprehension. The issues may be different - pagan temples and astronomy instead of same-sex marriage and stem cell research -- but the parallels are undeniable. And when religion overcame reason in Alexandria, an age of darkness descended which lasted a thousand years.

"If nothing else, Hypatia thought, history is like a planet continually traversing the same path around a sun. Just when you think something's over, it comes looming back from the gloom on yet another pass."

Brian Trent brings the 5th century world of Alexandria to life with vivid imagery, unforgettable characters, and every-day details which prove life in the ancient world was not so different from our own.

4 out of 5 stars Great story.......2007-05-23

I do not know who said that history does not repeat itself but has a tendancy to echo, nevertheless I think it could apply to the fundamental lesson contained in this historical novel. I did think I was getting a history book rather than a novel so I deducted one star. I am a star scrooge. I will be recommending this novel to people, nice one Brian.

5 out of 5 stars Great Take on a Great Woman.......2007-02-08

"Remembering Hypatia" is a great take on one of history's greatest minds, the last Librarian of Alexandria, Hypatia. It's set in 414 BCE instead of what I consider "ancient" Egypt (pre-Roman conquest), so I think that the title is a little misleading. It makes you weep at how much knowledge the world lost when misguided, bigoted religious fanatics burned the Library of Alexandria.

5 out of 5 stars Great Read.......2006-07-01

Hypatia was a remarkable real life woman. An astronomer, physicist, philosopher, and head librarian of the famed Library of Alexander. She is credited with the invention of the astrolabe. She lived however, in a time of rising religious tensions and as a woman who was teaching and a representative of a scientific world view she made an easy scapegoat.

Brian Trent does an excellent job of interweaving the lives of the characters and the intersecting themes of religion, science, and sexism. The time period comes to life in his writing as well. The multi-cultural, pluralistic Alexandria with its Egyptian, Jewish, Christian, and other inhabitants feels vibrant. The author does a great job of adding the authentic touches of scenery and surroundings. It was easy to feel connection to this long ago time period while reading this book. Indeed the message of this tale is still relevant today. Fundamentalism is on the rise and with it a rejection of alternative world views including science as well as a desire to hold women more rigidly in traditional sex roles. While on the flip side commercial society often overly encourages young women to seek attention through their sexuality and obsess about their weight and appearance rather than to really challenge their minds. It seems to me there are better possibilities for women and society in general than either of these extremes. Remembering Hypatia is a well written, thought provoking story of the life and times of an accomplished woman that has parallels to today's world.

Music hall performer Letty Potts is the original sow's ear who turns herself into a silk purse. Burned out of her rooming house by her unscrupulous ex-boyfriend Nick Sparkle, Letty needs to get out of London--and fast. Opportunity presents itself in the form of a train ticket to Little Bidewell discarded by Lady Agatha Whyte, society wedding planner. Upon her arrival, Letty is mistaken for Lady Agatha by the Bigglesworth family who have hired her to make their daughter's wedding the event of the decade. Never one to let good fortune slip by her, Letty utilizes her acting talent to pass as a duke's daughter forced to earn a living as a wedding coordinator. Thoroughly enmeshed in prewedding preparations, Letty finds herself unable to hurt the Bigglesworths who have welcomed her--as Lady Agatha--so graciously and who need her so much. However, when it turns out that the Bigglesworths' neighbor, the oh-so-handsome, unquestionably honorable, and all too eligible Sir Elliot March, is also the local magistrate, Letty figures it's time to get out of Dodge, uh, Little Bidewell. The larcenous Letty is utterly astonished by her overwhelming attraction to the serious--and seriously sexy--Elliot. He, too, seems completely astounded by Letty's natural sensuality, which leaves Elliot prone to behave in a most ungentlemanly manner. To further complicate matters, who should appear in Little Bidewell but the notorious Nick Sparkle, who believes Letty's working a con and wants in on the take. When the jig is up and Letty must face the music, it is left to Elliot to investigate and possibly prosecute the woman he has fallen in love with and wants to marry. Will two such different people, from such disparate places in society, be able to close the gap that exists everywhere but in their hearts? Read Connie Brockway's delicious frolic of a novel, The Bridal Season, to find out! --Alison Trinkle

Book Description

With the dazzling storytelling that has become her trademark, the author of the acclaimed McClairen’s Isle trilogy sweeps you back to Victorian England ... to a glittering world of titled society and scandalous secrets ... in the enchanting story of a woman who lives by her wits — and who commits the most startling indiscretion of all: She falls in love....

Letty Potts has gotten into a few fixes in her twenty-five years, but this is her worst predicament yet. A petty schemer by necessity, the struggling music hall performer has decided to go straight.

But after narrowly escaping the wrath of her partner in crime, she finds herself at Paddington Station with nothing but the gown she’s wearing ... and another woman’s train ticket clutched in her hand.

Now masquerading as the redoubtable “Lady Agatha,” of Whyte Wedding Celebrations, Letty arrives in the backwater burg of Little Bidewell, where she is to arrange the nuptials of a young society bride.

Amid the dizzying whirl of pre-wedding festivities, nobody suspects Letty’s secret ... except the sensual and aristocratic Sir Elliot March.

A war hero who has forsworn love, Elliot senses something decidedly amiss about this outspoken young woman. Yet she awakens a passionate yearning he’d thought was lost to him forever.

Soon a desperate masquerade embroils them both in a web of scandal and danger as Letty’s past catches up with her — threatening their lives ... and a love without peer.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars villain gets to cheat, lie, steal, and kick the dog, cause.........2005-06-05

Stepping politely over the failures which some Regencies set purely in London court, Connie Brockway charms entirely within the confines of a little traveled village & and it's occupants.

Being only my second novel from this author, I didn't know to look forwards to a plot with a `confidence trickster' masquerading as a Duke's daughter - instead I dreaded it. Until about 10 pages in when I realized it was absolutely perfect!

The brash Letty impersonates Lady Agatha White & fills her shoes in arranging a wedding for a country miss. She becomes involved unwillingly drawn into the lives and mini melodramas of the people around her, and falls hard for the local magistrate - Elliot. And that is enough of a plot synopsis for you lot! (greedy eyes)

Charming where it could have been ridiculous, bold when it could have been trite, the simple ease and humor with which the author delights and entertains the reader is impossible to describe.

In the unlikely Letty, we find no shrinking heroine, but a `woman of the world' who is quite aware of her own appeal and not a bit above using it. Every chapter begins with a maxim, and I came to thoroughly enjoy them - take for example, `The villain gets to cheat, lie, steal, and kick the dog, because in the end you shoot him'. All slightly stage centered advice passed on from her mother and the applicable line before each short chapter.

Even the hero is thoroughly believable and wonderfully suave.

Setting the time frame a little later than Regency England, into the last decade of Queen Victoria's reign, the dress provides a refreshing change from all that dampened muslin and so on! Sweeping hats are delightfully apparent, and our heroine sashays well..

A wonderful companion novel to Bridal Favours by Connie Brockway

3 out of 5 stars Flawed but entertaining; 3 & 1/2 stars.......2004-05-25

Letty is a delightful character, so much fun. Elliot is a sweet man; it's rather pleasant to have a hero who is simply a nice man. And Catherine is a selfish little.....

Intriging and funny with just a hint of heartache and danger. The first love scene is a disappointment; it's more about hurt and anger than anything else. Very romantic ending, even if it seems a little out of character for Elliot.

My first Connie Brockway book. Good enough to try more from her, but not the best I've read.

5 out of 5 stars A Witty and Fun Romance.......2004-02-28

Connie Brockway- "The Bridal Season" A+ This is a Victorian read and reminded me a bit of Lisa Kleypas, not quite as sensuous, but a VERY good story. Likeable characters. I couldn't see how she was going to pull off everything without scandal for the HEA, but she did it and made me believe in it! I'll be looking for more of her books; she's on my to buy list now for sure!

5 out of 5 stars Entertaining and Thought Provocative.......2003-08-22

As usual, Connie Brockway is in top form: wonderful characters, sexy, witty writing, fast-paced and insightful. The Bridal Season is both very entertaining and thought provocative. The hero, Sir Elliot March, is not only handsome, sensual and utterly appealing but also very principled and faced with a real moral dilemma which he resolves well. Our colorful heroine Letty Potts is a delight to watch as she charms everyone while transforming into a better person through confronting her own dilemma. For intelligent entertainment that's impossible to put down, try The Bridal Season, along with all of Connie's previous work.

5 out of 5 stars This Book Has Everything.......2002-09-17

A saucy heroine, a mouthwatering hero, a charming community, fun and wit and passion, this one has it all. Letty and Elliot are both immediately likable and delightfully original. Letty, raised as music hall performer, seeks to escape her increasingly nefarious boyfriend and finds a ticket to a tiny town called Little Bidewell, where she is mistaken for the eccentric Lady Agatha, duke's daughter-cum-wedding planner extraordinaire. Letty, whose luck had just run out, can't resist such an Opportunity and gets swept up in what begins as a rather benign deception. Soon, however, she becomes entangled in the lives of the charming Little Bidewell residents, including the sexy, chivalrous Sir Elliot.

Elliot is neither rogue nor rake, but a true gentleman; however, don't be put off if you thought only bad boys could be sexy! He's one of Brockwell's most irresistable creations!

The story is chock full of Brockway's delightfully witty dialogue, and there are many humorous moments, but what begins as an undeniable, potent attraction between Letty and Elliot becomes a heart-wrenching and most romantic unrequited (almost) love.

If you're open to something a little different but still demand great, passionate romance, try this one! I doubt you'll be disappointed!

2 out of 5 stars Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03

Digest sized production. A garden variety type story. It seems it is supposed to be 100 years or so post Ripley, there are very few human colonies left. A corporate expedition takes a ship to try and rebuild one. They find a Predator, lock him up, as he is unconscious. They fail to treat him with respect. He lures them to a bunch of Aliens, hoping the humans will get rid of them for him. Many people die.

              5 out of 5 stars great comic.......2007-08-26

thrill of the hunt does a great job of following the movie and the comic origins of avp. this perticullar comic has great art and an amazing original story.

1 out of 5 stars Worse AVP Aliens title ever.......2006-12-31

By far the worse title, doesnt compare to the others at all. Poorly written, poor story, waste of money, sorry.

3 out of 5 stars A solid read but lacks depth.......2005-06-17

Like the accompanying movie, Alien vs. Predator: Thrill of the Hunt looks nice but ultimately fails to grip the reader. That's not to say that the comic is without merit, but the cons outweigh the pros. The story is well composed, and the action is faced paced and fun, but eventually the whole thing runs out of steam and starts repeating itself. Roger Robinson tries hard to encapsulate the reader by reassuring them that the end will be spectacular, but it dosn't quite match the high expectations I had for this, in what was supposed to be more energetic. A good read, but perhaps it could have done with a stronger story before being rushed into production. A must for hardcore AVP fans only.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty and a good story.......2005-05-04

While it's not perfect, I think this comic is a good read and it's drawn beautifully. The human characters are all distinct, it has good atmosphere, and the Predators, especially the main one, are awesome. There is a lack of Predator/Alien interaction, except in the begining.

It follows a similar plotline to the original Aliens Vs. Predator graphic novel, but the outcome is quite a bit different. I would recommend this one.

Like many native religions, Vodou (often referred to as "Voodoo") has been scorned and ridiculed in mainstream Judeo-Christian communities. "The word 'Vodou' sends chills down the spines of most people, and conjures up age-old terrors of sorcery, black magic, and bogeymen lurking under the bed," writes author Sallie Ann Glassman (New Orleans Voodoo Tarot/Book and Card Set). This enticing compendium of the origins and practice of Vodou makes for a fascinating read, explaining how music, dance, and artistic expression are the heart and soul of this complicated religion. "What I discovered was a vibrant, beautiful, and ecstatic religion that was free from dogma, guilt or coercion," says Glassman, a thoughtful and articulate Jewish woman who first began studying New Orleans Vodou in 1975.

Its sophisticated spiritual philosophy has absorbed rituals from every place it's entered. The dances and customs of French Colonial New Orleans mix with the Native American Indian use of rattles and cornmeal. Yet many of its numerous magical deities come from the west coast of Africa, where Vodou originated. It is now reported to have 50 million followers worldwide, but with compelling invitations such as this one, it is bound to attract many more converts. --Gail Hudson

              Book Description

A completely accessible guide to practicing Vodou and deepening your connection with this bountiful life force

"Vodou" is the spelling preferred by practitioners who revere this powerful, ancient tradition--and Vodou Visions is the first book to provide an inspirational and authentic guide to its history, practices, and creative applications. It describes the tools and techniques for developing the magical mind and honoring the soul, while revealing how Vodou can release creative spirituality and open doors to self-awareness.

Comprehensive and inviting, this book introduces readers to Vodou's rich history, powerful ancestors, and vibrant spirits, known as Lwa. With more than one hundred breathtaking illustrations, Vodou Visions reveals how to honor and invoke the Lwa with specific ceremonial offerings and litanies. Using methods drawn from more than twenty years of practice, Vodou priestess Sallie Ann Glassman shares purification and empowerment rituals for individuals, communities, homes, and spiritual spaces. For more advanced practitioners, Glassman describes ways to deepen communication with the Lwa and to give thanks for an ongoing spiritual relationship. The visions of the Lwa bring a living experience of the Spirit into daily life.

Glassman welcomes readers to a community of faith and--above all--to a journey toward a creative spirituality that will enrich and affirm their lives.

              5 out of 5 stars Vodou Visions.......2005-12-23

I bought this book after having read Mambo Glassman's other work, The New Orleans Voodoo Tarot. I like a lot of what this book has to offer. With each image, Mambo Glassman presents prayers and appropriate offerings to the spirit or "vision" being worked. This book can be effectively used along with the New Orleans Voodoo Tarot, in that it uses the same images that are on the cards. It is interesting to see that Mambo Glassman has incorporated Rada, Petro, Congo, and Santeria spirits into her book/deck. While these spirits are completely seperat from eachother, the book was written in a respective manner and Priestess Glassman does not give an impression that the spirits are all the same. Each has it's own description, prayers, offerings, and histories. I believe Mambo Glassman was initiated in Haiti, but this book seems more like new orleans Voodoo to me. I would say buy it and enjoy!

              5 out of 5 stars Deffinently a good one.......2005-02-13

I reccomend Mambo Sallie Ann Glassman's book as an excelent companion to her New Orleans VooDoo Tarot. This book will not only expand on the vast ammount of information in the deck's book but will provide the reader with wisdom from both the Loa and Orisha. If you are someone interested in learning more about VooDoo as practiced in New Orleans the check out this book. The illustrations of each card speak to the soul. Mambo Glassman is truly gifted.

              5 out of 5 stars Fresh Viewpoint.......2005-02-08

I came away from "Vodou Visions: An Encounter with the Divine Mystery" with eyes opened to a fresh point of view. Sallie Ann Glassman is a creative genius. A wonderful artist who artfully presents the Vodou cosmology in word and image, in a way that wets the appetite for more. As an ATR (African Traditional Religion) practitioner I found the work respectful, inclusive, insightful, entertaining yet smart. Glassman is a true talent by creating such a concise work on a very elaborate cosmology and deep subject. "Vodou Visions" is a passport to a fascinating world. Kudos, for a job well done! I highly recommend this book as an introduction to the mysterious world of the lwa and the Vodou vision.

              1 out of 5 stars great bogus!.......2004-08-16

Sallie Ann Glassman is not a Mambo! She does attempt to pimp Lwa for her performances and for her weekly "ceremonies". Any serious Mambo and Hougan (and even practitioner of Haitian Vodou) will laugh when they hear the following: Sallie Ann Glassman's "house" does not have grades! Traditional Haitian Vodou knows 3 grades of initiation! Sallie Ann Glassman does not perform the Priye Ginea because it was Catholic... she opted for an invocation to the four directions and four elements lifted from either the OTO or Wicca or Enochian tradition, but done in French, to sound like Creole - so the average tourist would not know that it was just some invocation from another tradition that had nothing to do with Vodou. When she takes people to Haiti for initiation (remember: no grades!) she gives them Pot Tets filled with a feather and 2 or 3 other items. She does not teach passwords or handshakes to her initiates - who, again, have not received any grade! To make a long story short, this book and the author are great bogus and have NOTHING to do with real Haitian Vodou!

5 out of 5 stars Truely more than five stars.......2004-06-07

Having done many vodou ceremonies with the author and her Ounfo I can testify that this is one of the greatest books on Vodou I have ever read! Sallie Ann is so down to earth and sweet and will not only listen to whatever hurts you, but will give you both a spiritual and physical answer to it. I have a friend that belongs to her Ounfo and my experiences with Sallie has been nothing but enjoyable. Her artwork is pouring out of this book, along with her vast knowlegde of the Lwas and Orishas. For all who are curious to those who have been initiated, this book is nothing but an asset.

              Book Description

Among life's simple pleasures, nothing compares with the aroma and flavor of freshly baked bread. But in the course of a busy day, it's hard to find the many hours needed to prepare traditional yeast breads.

Now, with 125 Best Quick Bread Recipes, bestselling baking experts Donna Washburn and Heather Butt provide the perfect solution for anyone who wants to enjoy homemade bread in a hurry. Unlike conventional breads, which require yeast to rise before baking, quick breads get their lightness and texture from baking soda and baking powder. As a result, there's no waiting -- just mix the dough, pour it into a pan and bake!

With the recipes in this book, you can prepare a tantalizing range of breads, biscuits, loaves and snacking cakes using only a few simple steps. Baking times range from 10 minutes to just over an hour. There's no easier or faster way to enjoy savory treats such as Broccoli Cheddar Cornbread or Rosemary Scones Topped with Carmelized Vidalias, or decadent dessert loaves like Macadamia White Chocolate Chip Bread. Here you'll also find classic comfort foods such as Golden Raisin Bread and Gingerbread with Warm Lemon Sauce, as well as hearty favorites like Country Harvest Loaf.

For people with special dietary needs, there are chapters devoted to gluten-free and low-fat quick breads. And if you have a bread machine with a "quick bread," "cake" or "batter bread" cycle, you'll find recipes that are designed to take advantage of this feature.

As you'd expect from Donna and Heather, the recipes in this book are as imaginative and delicious as they are quick and easy to make. It's the perfect collection for anyone -- novice or expert -- who loves to bake.

              5 out of 5 stars Yummie.......2005-02-04

I'm a 33 year old Dutch lady how likes to bake. Quick breads or not common/known in Holland. I started once with a chocolate/bananabread which the family loves (my 7 year old nephew claimes that he gets better pronto after eating the bread)!! So started to find more on the www, and purchased some books. This is the best, because it gives you background info and easy to follow recipes. Family & Friends love the Zucchinni/cranberry loaf and the apple upside down cake (my brother in law, who is an pro cycleracer, ate 1/2 of the cake within 15 minutes, forgot his dieet.

5 out of 5 stars A Great gift - Buy One For Yourself Too!.......2003-07-21

I bought this as a birthday gift but after trying some of the recipes I had to buy myself one too. The appetizing photos were the inspiration to immediately try "Rosemary Scones Topped With Caramelized Vidalias" and "Glazed lemon Coconut Bread". My family's rave reviews prompted me to try many more of these imaginative recipes. The clear, straight-forward instructions and tips (curdling of lemon juice-evaporated milk mixture is normal-don't worry!) resulted in successes every time. Besides the tried-and-true recipes Grandma used to make, I found many new creative ones such as Low-Fat Triple Apple Oat and Banana Flaxseed. What a treasure!

                Book Description

Today, as for 4,000 years, we use branding to mark private property. These clever and artistic "iron signatures" appear here as detailed drawings, with fascinating stories of how they were designed and why; the ranches and historic cattle drives with which they were associated; and how rustlers attempted to alter their appearance. The saga concludes with a look at how brands carry on an ageless tradition in the computer era. Illustrated with historic and contemporary cattle-branding photographs with an encyclopedia.

1 out of 5 stars Not so practical solutions.......2000-04-23

The subtitle reads "Inspiring Ideas and Practical Solutions for Creating a Beautiful Bathroom." The photos may be inspiring, but the book certainly has no practical solutions. There are lots of beautiful photos of bathrooms (most from New York and surrounding area); however, the photos were selected more for artistic content than because they described the layout or features of the bathrooms. For example there are nice closeups of brushes and sponges, a pile of toilet paper rolls, etc. These photos cannot possibly help the reader in search of practical solutions. Similarly, only 6 of the descriptions include floor plans. As for the book's advice on building a bathroom: find a contractor or architect with whom you can work, and be sure to shop around. There are a few pages with b&w photos of bath fixtures only, but the listings only include a few of the most expensive styles. The resource guide is almost of no value. It is a directory listing of suppliers and architects (without web listings) and nothing more. If you want to look at nice pictures of some very nicely finished and expensive bathrooms, this could be the book for you, but if you want any help with the practical design, construction, material selection, layout, etc. look elsewhere.
