Book Description
'A compelling novel....Rash tells his story with subtlety and with the best kind of empathy.' -The Wall Street Journal When a twelve-year-old girl drowns in the Tamassee River and her body is trapped in a deep eddy, the people of the small South Carolina town that bears the river's name are thrown into the national spotlight. The girl's parents want to attempt a rescue of the body; environmentalists areconvinced the rescue operation will cause permanent damage to the river and set a dangerous precedent. Torn between the two sides is Maggie Glenn, a twenty-eightyear-old newspaper photographer who grew up in the town and has been sent to document the incident. Since leaving home almost ten years ago, Maggie has done her best to avoid her father, but now, as the town's conflict opens old wounds, she finds herself revisiting the past she's fought so hard to leave behind.

A Wonderful Surprise!!.......2007-01-09
I had never read this author before this book and I was wonderfully surprised to find a new favorite author. Mr. Rash does a great job of capturing the real culture and language of the mountaion people while weaving a plot that will keep you glued to the pages until the end. I literally could not put this book down until I finished it. I've already ordered his other books.
Shall we gather at the river, where bright angel feet have trod?.......2006-09-17
"Shall we gather at the river,
Where bright angel feet have trod,
With its crystal tide forever
That flows by the throne of God?
Yes, we'll gather at the river,
The beautiful, the beautiful river,
Gather with the saints at the river
That flows by the throne of the Lord."
The words of that old hymn have always haunted me, maybe because a large portion of my childhood was spent on the banks of a beautiful river, tucked up in the mountains, where I felt God and the angels walking with me. When I first saw this book on the shelf, I knew immediately where Ron Rash got his title and the whole time I was reading this book, the song would filter through my mind. Oddly enough, I finished the book while up in Rabun County, Georgia, across the wild and scenic Chattooga River from Oconee (it may be Occonee-- I have to double check) County, South Carolina, where the book takes place.
This is not an easy book to read. The opening scene is the death of a twelve-year-old girl, who drowns in the Tamassee River and her body is trapped in a deep eddy, impossible to recover by the usual means. The small town that perches at the riverside is soon forced into the national spotlight as a conflict arises between the girls parents, who want her body recovered, and environmentalists who want to protect the river from the permanent damage rescue attempts will cause, and prevent future damage to a river which, after a long and hard fight, bears the protection of federal preservation. Throw into this Maggie Glenn, a photographer from a Columbia SC newspaper, who grew up in the area (and has demons from her own past to fight). Maggie was involved in the battle that helped the river earn its "wild and scenic" status, and in this story, finds herself documenting the drama of the river, observing the people she grew up with, and face to face with a father she had a falling out with years before.
Like I said, it's not an easy read, or it wasn't for me, because of the conflicts between the two camps-- those that want to help the family come to closure and bury their daughter so they can begin to heal, and those that want to protect a spot on earth from further damage from mankind. I know which group I'd be in, but I came to understand a bit more the viewpoints of the other. I like a book that makes you dig in and explore your own deep eddies and currents. And I like a book that allows me to gather at the river, with the saints and the angels, once again.
Did I mention this was based on a true story?
Whose Side Would You Be On???..........2006-08-28
This was a really good book. I must admit that I didn't like it as much as his first novel, 'One Foot In Eden', but it was good nonetheless. As I read this story I kept asking myself whose side I would be on, and just when I thought my mind was made up, the other side made a very good point, and a very sad one.
12 year-old Ruth Kowalsky drowned in the Tamassee River during a family outing, a river that is protected by the Wild and Scenic River Act. This means that nothing can be done to this river to change or alter it in ANY way. Mr. and Mrs. Kowalsky want to retrieve their daughter's body, but because it lies in a dangerous part of the river known as a hydraulic, divers can't simply go in and get it. A temporary dam needs to be built to get her out. And this dam violates the Scenic River Act.
Maggie, a photographer from the area who now lives in Columbia, has been sent to her hometown with reporter Allen Hemphill to cover the growing problem. The town and the parents are at odds when it comes to retrieving Ruth. The town says no, she belongs to the river now, and are not willing to break the law to get her out, while the parents just want their daughters body so they can give her a proper burial back home. Seems pretty cut and dry huh? I had no doubt who's side I was on at the beginning of this book. But by the end my opinion had changed.
Mr. Rash is an exceptional writer. He makes you feel like you're right there on that river with everyone else. He makes everyone involved feel so real, like they're distant relatives of ours. Just as I recommended his first book, I absolutely recommend this one as well. Mr. Rash is a very talented author who definitely should not be missed. I can't wait for his next novel.
Seldom.......2006-08-15
Seldom does a book make me choke up or shed a tear, but SAINTS AT THE RIVER was able to affect me emotionally as few other books in my life ever have. Perhaps it's because this story is from the south and after leaving the south a few years ago, I am often brought to tears when thinking about it because I miss it so much. Perhaps it's the lyrical way Mr. Rash has told this beautifully eerie story of the south that captured my heart. Perhaps it's the story itself, the death of a child in the first few pages that brought the tears. You be the judge. As I pack the book up and send it to my son, as I recommend it to a friend who I think might feel and appreciate what I did when I read it, I will again and again feel extremely lucky to have found it. As you read this you will find lines that are meant to touch you and do, that pull you into the middle of what everyone is living and feeling and dealing with in their own unique and personal ways. Don't pass this up.
Historical fiction?.......2006-06-26
I enjoy Rash's poetry and prose, and was very excited to read this particular novel. Text at the beginning of the book disclaims any connections with actual events or persons, but most anyone who lives in the southern Appalachia knows the story Rash is telling - from the partial description of Raven's Chute, to the gruesome details of dismemberment in a recovery at left crack. I think Rash is fantastic, but I'm wondering where/when the decision to cross the line blurring fiction and nonfiction is made or can be made.

A disappointment (a history teacher's review).......2007-07-31
To start, let me establish my bonafides as a fan of Mr. Thom's work. Three of his novels sit on a shelf less than two feet from this computer. I have the featured review on one of his novels ("The Red Heart"). One of his books is on my Favorite Books List on my profile page.
So, I approached this book with much hope. Instead of his usual quality, I found this book to be simplistic, with less detail and bent on beating two points home time after time: the Irish were treated brutally and shamefully by the U.S. army during the Mexican War and the Mexican War was an unjust war.
Thom makes it clear in the opening dedication and acknowledgments that he is against the Iraq War and quite clearly he is drawing analogies between the two. However, Thom never really gets off of his twin focuses on the unjust war and the unjust treatment of the Irish. He never gets to his real strengths in his other books - bringing the reader into another world and teaching us about larger movements in history, but also about the day-to-day lives and goings on of our ancestors. Thom rarely gets beyond the superficial and that is a shame - and a loss to Thom's loyal readers because when his books are good they are fantastic.
Thom's format is the main cause of the failure of this book to be as excellent as his others. His chosen format is a diary of a 10-12 year old Irish-American boy (Quinn) with the U.S. Army and the remembrances of a Mexican man (Juvero)about his experiences during the war as a young boy 16 years later. The diary entries are the better of the two, but are often sketchy. The remembrances are very repetitive and full of Spanish phrases that must be annoying to readers who don't know any Spanish. He often comments about Manifest Destiny, the Irish and America's arrogance. It gets old - not that he wasn't right, but he made his point early and often - it's time to move on. I must admit that I started skimming his sections. I think that Juvero says it best on page 256: "Que Rollo! My preachings are a bore!"
So, to sum up: not his best work. I recommend you read any other Thom book before this one. My grade: D+.
Refreshing New Look Into The Mexican/American War.......2007-03-23
Mr. Thom's novel, Saint Patrick's Battalion, ia a refreshing new look into the U.S. invasion of Mexico in 1846. Through Mr. Thom's description of the men (mostly Irish Catholics) who comprised the St. Patrick's Battalion, we are provided with a realistic account of the invasion itself and of the noble reasons that scores of Irish-born U.S. Soldiers switched sides and joined the Mexican Army to defend a weaker, Catholic nation. And they did it willingly and with the knowledge that they would face the gallows if American forces should defeat the Mexican Army, which of course they did. I recommend this book to anyone who has ever questioned the "manifest destiny" philosohpy that was used to justify the war against Mexico.
A Novel On America's Past Hatred For the Irish and Its Anti-Catholic Bigotry.......2006-11-18
At the time of the Mexican War (1846-1848) Irish immigration to the United States was at its height. Fear and bigotry of this growing Roman Catholic population led many Protestant Americans into so-called "nativist" movements, enabling harsh treatment of the Irish and literally fueling the fire of anti-Catholic riots in American cities. In part to escape this discrimination and also to obtain American citizenship, many Irishmen enlisted for service in the army; only to find worse the hatred and abuse from their Protestant officers and fellow soldiers. This allowed the Mexicans a great propaganda weapon, one that made it easy for them to send word throughout the Irish ranks of the American army that in Mexico they would be welcomed as fellow Roman Catholics. This resulted in the desertion of hundreds of Irish and German Catholic soldiers.
James Alexander Thom's SAINT PATRICK'S BATTALION is an exciting fictionalized account of the action taken by Pvt. John Riley and others like him who could no longer tolerate being whipped, gagged and branded simply because they were of a different race and religion. Riley made his way over to the Mexican forces where he was quickly made an officer and helped form the San Patricio Battalion of artillery. The story here is told through the journal of Padraic Quinn, an Irish campboy in the American army and interspersed with the recollections of Augustin Juvero, the son of Riley's Mexican lover, who was later to become one of the valiant military cadets, 'Los Ninos Heroes,' at the 1847 Battle of Chapultepec.
Further historical reading on this shame in America's history can be found in THE ROGUE'S MARCH by Peter F. Stevens and THE IRISH SOLDIERS OF MEXICO by Michael Hogan, among others.

The Animorphs have hit a wall. Jake is depressed and sapped of confidence. They¹re living in isolation in the free Hork-Bajir colony with no means of stepping up the resistance. The time has come for the ultimate risk.
Customer Reviews:
I loved it........2006-03-21
I am an 8 year old girl named Samantha I have been reading the
animorphs books sins the beginning of 2nd grade I think this
one is really good I like how she does the covers and I love
chapter books a lot. These books have a lot of action
Very Slightly Thrilling.......2004-08-25
What was Applegate doing??? The new Animorph thing??? Hated it!!
The one thing I liked was that they gave disabled kids a chance to fight. But still, the thing at the end... What was Cassie thinking??? I think she just lost the war for the Animorphs- or at least sentenced one to death . .
i am 14 NOT 12 but this is easier to write my review!!! :).......2001-11-11
At long last more animorphs!!!! I think yhis is one of the best animorph books, it's about time they added to their numbers and James and the rest are a great choice!!
1 question in this book there is a boy named Timmy with a bobcat morph but in the next books his name is Tuan????
i think we should get to know the other new animorphs more though, some of the 17 you don't even find out their names.
Anyway a great book, buy it! No buy them ALL!!!!
The Ultimate book!!!!.......2001-10-05
This book was too cool! The Animorphs are stuck. They're living in the Hork Bajir valley in the forest with their disbelieving families, and shaky resistance against an attack, should one come. Jake and Cassie are at odds and there's in-fighting at every turn, which is breaking them up. Finally, when they realize they need a bigger army, they start to recruit new Animorphs.
Without a doubt, this is a classic book in the series. You can't miss it. The people the Animorphs choose are great, the climax is exciting, and the storyline is believable. Wonderful book, KA!
The Ultimate.......2001-08-11
I picked this book up...after abandoning the series for a while, and I was pleased to find that it's still going strong. Jake's depressed, their hiding with the Hork-Bajir colony, and now Visser Three knows where they live and that they're kids. So they recruit new animorphs. What happens? Well, I wouldn't spoil the book, now would I? Just pick this book up if you like animorphs, and if you've never read them, pick up one of the first few twenty books beforehand.

Surya Das's breezy delivery makes his teachings come off like colorful conversation. In the third installment of his bestselling "Awakening" series, America's most popular lama shows us how to integrate inner and outer practices. Our inner spirituality, he says, can never be separate from our relationships with others. With his trademark clarity, he integrates his teachings with light- hearted anecdotes and down-to-earth practices. Basic meditation, for instance, can help us create a gap between our knee-jerk judgments and our reactions, allowing for calm, wise relations. Likewise, one can try authentic listening ("opening the third ear") or exploiting the power of speech to build deeper connections. And beyond human relations lies our connection to the natural world, for which Surya Das also includes a few lovely meditations. Taking that extra step in our practice from the self to the world requires more than just individual persistence, it takes compassion and teaches more than you'd expect. --Brian Bruya
Book Description
Four cassettes, 6 hrs.
performance by the author
In Awakening the Buddha Within, Surya Das explained the foundations of Buddhism and illuminated the Dharma path for Western readers. In his follow-up book, Awakening to the Sacred, he showed how to create a daily spiritual practice. While his first two books focused on developing an inner spiritual life, in AWAKENING THE BUDDHIST HEART shows listeners how to find a sacred dimension in our relationships with ourselves and others by actively taking our spiritual life out into the world. A more mainstream complement to his previous, AWAKENING THE BUDDHIST HEART shows how to develop a "spiritual intelligence" that reflects our relationships with each and every living thing around us.
By applying the precepts of Tibetan Buddhism into our Western lives, we can learn how to take our spiritual practice out into the world, and into our family and community life. As humans, no matter how devout, we need to feel loved, to feel connected to each other as well as connected to a spiritual practice, and the quality of our individual lives is vastly determined by the quality of our relationships. As Surya Das writes, everyone has room for improvement, whether it's in their relationships with coworkers, friends, family, pets, the natural world, the community, everything and everyone—each relationship is important and essential for spiritual growth and development.
Buddhism tells us that all of our bonds are sacred and sometimes our adversaries prove to be our greatest teachers. Surya Das teaches how to learn from those we love, as well as those we don't love, and how to let go of negative emotions while developing and expanding a spiritual intelligence. By providing specific exercises, meditations, and prayers to share spiritual energy with mates, children, friends, as well as strangers, and illustrated with contemporary Western situations that reflect Buddhist teachings, AWAKENING THE BUDDHIST HEART shows how by developing our spiritual intelligence we can find and nurture the sacred in all our relationships.

Buddhism made easy.......2007-01-17
Lama Surya Das made Buddhism easy to grasp in this very readable book. I highly recommend it to both beginner and advance seekers.
Fine Heartfelt Book.......2004-12-16
This is a very fine book on Buddhism in general and Tibetan Vajrayana in specific. I did like his prior "Awakening the Buddha Within" a bit better (I gave it 5 stars). For me, 4 stars is pretty darn good! This sequel is well worth reading. I think that if you are a Myers-Briggs F-type (Feeler) you will especially enjoy it, but perhaps the T-types (Thinkers) might just get more balance from it. Surya Das has a very easy-going style but gets across lots of good instruction and some practical activities as well. He uses lots of personal anecdotes which make the book more accessible than many others that are available. If I were to recommend books to someone first exploring Buddhism or Vajrayana, his would be at the top of the list (followed by Pema Chodron's books). Of course, it's lots easier to attune with a Western Buddhist master who shares more cultural assumptions and conceptions with you. Many Vajrayana books are laced with Tibetan mythology, psychology, medicine, etc. that are, frankly, alien to the Westerner. Surya Das' books have far less of this. My favorite quote from this book is: "No appointments, no disappointments...Unedit yourself...Become a spiritual astronaut." (page 173). Pretty modern view, no?
Excellent-Uplifting!.......2003-03-21
I have been studying Buddihism for nearly 3 years now and Lama Surya Das is by far one of my favorite authors. This book provides beautiful examples of humanity and how we can bring more love and harmony to our lives and is presented with reality to a western thinker.
He takes the intimadating part out of buddhist practice and shows how accessable it can be in one's life.
I have read many other Buddhist authors who I found so self centered, so very "enlightened" apparently that they now came off a bit cold and condescending, so wordy and esoteric that their message is lost. Or what they were writing about couldn't possibly be applied in American or Western culture.
LSD talks with you, that what I loved. I came away feeling, Yeah I can do those things and be inspired. That is what one hopes to gain when reading a book on spirituality/self improvement. Lama Surya Das succeeds amply with this book.
inspirational..........2002-07-01
Lama Surya Das is probably one of the best Buddhist authors, using examples from real life to prove his points, and even tackles the toughest parts of Buddhism. He has a great way of sounding like he's speaking to you personally. He is also able to know more than his reader and teach them, without sounding condescending or arrogant.
"Awakening the Buddhist Heart" is a great book, in which Lama Surya Das maintains his style of writing. Each passage is very inspirational, and has a lot of re-readability, with easily organized sections. It is a slow read, because there's a lot to digest, but is well worth the time. It's a good read for anyone curious about Buddhism, to the Dali Lama himself.
Beautiful...............2001-12-16
Since 09-11 I have paid more attention to what I have been reading. Life is short, and knowing this, I am trying hard to read books that can help make a difference, however small it may be.
I have been reading a lot of books on Buddhism recently, and I must say that this is THE ONE!!!!! I love LSD's sense of humor, his honesty, and the way he approaches life.
This book should be required reading in or out of school and the home...for the PARENTS too! We must learn how to live in today's times, and no one gives better guidance than LSD.

101 great ideas.......2005-08-07
i'm always happy with the 101 books by julie savill. her 101 kitchens was great and inspired me to redo my kitchen myself with a 'mini' remodel. this is true of her 101 bathrooms: stylish room solutions. you can find some good ideas from complete overhaul of your kitchen to just changing the colors and knobs. her entire approach is fresh. we americans get so bogged down in the 'sameness' of a look or 'fad' that runs through our kitchen and bath magazines. open up sunset magazine from one month to the next and the bathrooms begin to look the same. not in this little book of 101 gems. i wouldn't mind if the books were a bit bigger, but then again they fit so nicely in your handbag or briefcase for lunchtime planning.
Great book.......2003-08-10
I really liked this book. It has a lot of very nice designs, that I never thought about.
I like the concept of how the book is designed - straight and simple.

not worth it.......2003-08-01
This book is about the size of a child's Golden Book; it's an unfortunate size to choose for a design book, but I probably wouldn't have minded so much if the designs were any good. The "where to buy" section at the back lists American sources, yet the pictures don't seem to be of American bathrooms (there's an odd aesthetic in them that's hard to pin down, except that these just don't look like the styles and materials that you see at Expo, on HGTV or in your general design mag).
If you love the idea of putting wooden floors, toilets wedged into spaces exactly their own width, & toilet tanks concealed in wooden cabinets into your bathroom, this is the book for you. If you're planning a remodel where you're just replacing everything & you want color scheme or materials ideas, probably anything on the shelf at Home Depot would be better.

Book Description
Angura: Posters of the Japanese Avant-Garde documents the extraordinary posters created for a group of experimental Japanese theatre groups during the 1960s and 70s. Ranging from the vivid and sexually explicit images of sixties psychedelia to the subtle refinement of traditional Japanese printmaking, the posters represent a tumultuous period both in Japanese graphic arts and in Japanese society as a whole. Silkscreened with up to twenty different colors and printed in limited editions, the posters were ostensibly meant as advertisements for the theatre productions of a thriving counterculture. But the designers focused such lavish care on the posters that they were rarely finished before the productions opened, eliminating their commercial function and making them objects of art. Author David G. Goodman illuminates these arresting images, describes the context in which they were created, and provides a brief history of modern Japanese graphic design. In the foreword, Ellen Lupton discusses the relevance of these images for the contemporary designer. Angura will appeal to anyone interested in Japanese anime graphics.

Book Description
The House That Jack Built is the life story of Hal Jackson, one of the most important figures in American radio and television. When starting out as a young professional, during the Jim Crow era in Washington, D.C., Jackson was told by the management of WINX that no Black man would ever broadcast at their station. He ultimately proved them wrong and was given a time slot of the station -- thus beginning a long and illustrious career, filled with an extraordinary series of firsts:
The first Black radio announcer on network radio.
The first Black inducted in the Radio Hall of Fame.
The first Black host of a jazz show on the ABC network.
The first Black to do play-by-play sports announcing on radio.
The first Black to host an interracial network show on NBC-TV.
The first person to broadcast from a theater live.
He organized and was one of the owners of the first Black team to win the World's Basketball Championship.
The first Black host of an international network television presentation.
He was instrumental in acquiring the first radio station owned and operated by Blacks in New York City.
At a time when Block women were prohibited from entering beauty pageants, he founded Hal Jackson's Talented Teen International contest.
Here is a remarkable story about a remarkable person. The House That Jack Built is an important addition to the history of media in the United States.

A Must Read!.......2002-04-11
I was amazed at all of the people who's lives were touched by Mr. Jackson. He has many firsts that I didn't know about. There were many facts learned by reading this autobiography that I didn't know even though I am married to him. This is a must read if you want to find out about the beginnings of black radio in the United States and the beginnings of WBLS in New York. The photographs are priceless.
