Customer Reviews:
Good thing he's pretty.......2006-10-12
As an avid reader, I was horribly disappointed with this book. As I read others reviews I almost gagged on the words. I found this story totally fictional and very undeveloped. I think had he spent more time in the writing and editing process perhaps something more memorable could have emerged. Overall, I was very disappointed... Don't waste your money.
Somewhere Beyond Here.......2006-05-03
I am speechless. What a wonderful gift to those fortunate to read it. It goes without saying that a tissue box close by is indeed a necessity. I am emotionally spent. I love books, music, and movies that tap into my emotions and truly make me "feel" something. Author does this superbly. Well done!! Looking forward to the next one!!
awesome.......2006-04-19
I agree. Austin's book is outstanding. It's insightful and deep. I can't wait for the next one.
Awesome.......2006-04-12
I have nothing bad to say about this book. As a fellow writer I am so impressed and amazed by Austin's talent and depth. I would love to read more from this talented, gorgeous guy. I hope he keeps writing....as for any lack of editing? Who cares? Tne most important thing in any writing piece is content, and this book was incredible...touching and thought provoking. Mr. carty, if you're reading this, I think you're wonderful!
Grab Some Tissues... .......2006-01-26
I purchased this book from Barnes and Noble two Christmas's ago at a signing Mr. Carty was having. Way led onto way and I never got around to reading the book. Now that there is a large buzz around our town of High Point about Austin being on Survivor, I finally pulled Somewhere Beyond Here off the shelf. I started it at 4 PM yesterday and 4 hours later I was still sitting on my couch crying. Carty pulls you in on page one, the tears begin falling on page two, and they don't stop until you close the book. Upon reflection, it is hard to believe a twenty- year old kid (his supposed age when he penned this book) has such depth. I agree with a fellow reviewer, the book is in need of professional editing; but anyone with a sense of literature will know to overlook that and will realize that this young man will truly be churning out inspirational stories for years to come. I for one can't wait. So proud to be from his hometown.

Book Description
A New York Times extended list bestselling author, Dorothy Garlock has won acclaim and awards for her unique ability to convey both the romance and reality of frontier America. Here she presents one of her most beloved stories, a tale of two outcasts who must learn to take a leap of faith--and take a chance on love. She had narrowly escaped the lynch mob that unjustly hanged her foster father. Now lonely Willa Hammer has nothing left--except her dog Buddy, her faith in herself, and the protection of a strange, secretive family. She joins their wagon train, headed west . . . never realizing that she is traveling to the wilds of the Big Horn Mountains, where a run-down, intrigue-ridden ranch and the arms of an untamed, hardened cowboy await her. Haunted by his past, Smith Bowman has the power to infuriate Willa and hurt her. But a love greater than the Big Horn can be theirs if they can surrender to the gentle giving of their hearts.

One of Garlock's better Western Adventures.......2002-09-20
This is one of Dorothy Garlock's better books, in my opinion. The characters are well developed and the plot is full of adventure. Willa is a strong, intelligent heroine who always manages to make the better of whatever hard situation is thrown her way - escaping a wild mob, fending off the advances of a lecherous gambler, taking on the role of semi-guardian to two orphaned teens along the way, nursing their injured aunt back to health, and taming the heart of a grief-stricken cowboy (Smith, our hero) who has up until now sought comfort in only a bottle. A very entertaining read and a lot of romantic tension between the hero and heroine. It grew a little weak towards the end, which is why I gave it only 4 stars, but it was still a very enjoyable book.
Historical romance, A Gentle Giving.......2002-05-10
I just finished A Gentle Giving, by Dorothy Garlock, and it was wonderful! This one was not one of my favorites of hers, but it was very good. Willa actually escaped a house in flames, caused by the angry townsfolk, in nothing more than ther nightgown. The family she joins up with, lends her clothing... so not even owning the clothing on her body, she is thrust into the hard life of a wagon trail. When the father is killed, leaving behind two teenagers to fend for themselves, Willa chooses to help them get to their next of kin in the Big Horn Mountains. This was an excellent read... and I'm off to read The Listening Sky by Dorothy Garlock now.
Liked it........2002-01-05
I listened to the audio cassette recording of Dorothy Garlock's A Gentle Giving and I liked this Western Historical romance and I liked the characters Willa Hammer and Smith Bowman and though I don't feel it's a keeper I enjoyed the romance story.
This was my first Dorothy Garlock book. I loved it!.......1999-08-17
A Gentle Giving was the first book by Dorothy Garlock that I ever read. It has become one of my all time favorites and a treasure I keep along with a collection of her other titles.
Wonderful.......1999-06-17
Garlock does a great job of slowly allowing Smith and Willa to fall in love. Both have had devastating pasts which make them stronger together for the future. Encore, Garlock!

Not Free SF Reader.......2007-09-25
No old people allowed. At 21, they get rid of you, thanks to some fancy biometric tracking. If you don't think that is a great idea, then special operatives named Sandmen, armed with weaponry that discharges a variety of different ammuntion hunt you down.
Logan is a Sandman, and he comes to realise what is going on is wrong. He ends up a runner, and encounters all sorts of bizarre things on his quest for Sanctuary.
Obvious Copy of "Brave New World"/ "We".......2007-04-16
The themes of this book are obviously inspired (copied) from the 1946 novel "Brave New World" by Aldous Huxley, which itself is claimed to be inspired by the 1921 book "We" by Yevgeny Zamyatin. Pulp fiction version, I guess. Not revolutionary or original, commercial. Movie was cool. Entertaining.
Logan's Limp - horrid writing, germ of fascinating ideers.......2007-03-16
Just polished off this 'lil 'fastfood' french-fry of a book - abysmal. It's more like a draft for a screenplay (a kind assessment) - you could also look at it as simply half-baked prose with about as much depth (and plot cohesion) as a puddle on your driveway. I can certainly understand why the film's script deviates from the book to a great extent. If the film had stuck to the book more closely, it would have made even less sense. The book has kinds of hops, skips and jumps in the 'action'. Don't even try to make sense of what's going on, let alone 'why' - the main aim of these two TV writers seems to have been to ensure that something (anything...!) is going on. Oftentimes one of the 2 main characters just 'barely' makes it past various (and sundry) obstacles, dangers, etc. You almost see the screen darken as the commercial break begins, with the book's seemingly endless string of (disjointed) cliffhangers - 1940's comic-book style. Character development, as noted by another reviewer, seems to be a foreign concept for the half-hour TV sitcom/sci-fi format - just action, loud noises, odd settings. I very much liked the movie for its special effects and the synthesizers of Mr Goldsmith's soundtrack. This book is a paltry precursor to that [also flawed] effort. "Hacks" is the term that first springs to mind when confronted with this level of hapless stringing together of words. 2 stars for the ideas. The 'processing' of said notions is decidedly roughhewn.
Fantastic book of ideas - definitely not the movie.......2006-03-24
I've read the other reviews for this book and have to chime in. I've read this book about two dozen times over the years and it continues to be one of my favorites of all time.
The world of Logan's Run (the novel) is one in which the idea of a youth-centric culture exists to the point where growing old is outlawed. In fact, on your 21st birthday (Last Day) you must report to be put to 'sleep' (think Soylent Green). Those who want to live longer must 'run' away to a mythical place called Sanctuary, but are pursued by the police called Sandmen who put them to sleep (get it?), but using a special bullet called a 'homer' which burns out the victim's nervous system.
Contrary to others here, the reason that Logan runs is to give meaning to his existence. The youth culture is all about fun, sex, drugs, and the like, and dying at 21 leaves little time to accomplish anything. Logan, being a Sandman on Last Day, believes that if he finds the legendary Sanctuary and destroys it, he will be remembered forever in song (no kidding). The book covers Logan's 'Run' through the complex maze toward Sanctuary put up by the underground that does not agree with the youth culture and wants things back the way they were. By the end of the book, Logan agrees.
This book is fun, adventurous, lyrical, and shows a ton more promise and imagination than the movie of the same name, which borrows the most basic concepts from the book, and changes the fantastic journey that Logan goes through from staunch conformist to idealistic rebel with the lame idea that a computer controls the world.
Read this book. The good news is that they've been planning a remake more true to the novel for some time. Hopefully we'll see Logan do a better Run in the near future.
Running with the hunter.......2005-12-27
In the hands of a better science fiction writer, Logan's Run the novel would have been much fuller. The world we're given is fascinating, however, we're not given too much depth to really bring us to the world of the future where no one is allowed to live past the age of 21. In the same vein, major characters, Logan and Jessica in particular, aren't fleshed out at all. For example, we're told that they fall in love with each other, but unless we really suspend our disbelief and convince ourselves that Logan and Jessica's love is based on the extreme circumstances they endure over a twenty-four hour period there really is nothing that would make us really feel for the characters, in love or on the run.
Despite that, Logan's Run is a good, quick read. Enjoyable and fast-paced.

Look Behind You, Logan!.......2007-03-13
I picked up a copy of Logan's Run with this exact cover in Kidd's Bookstore in Cincinnati in November of 1969. Once I started reading it I couldn't put it down. Logan is a policeman(of sorts)in this futuristic novel about over population. Each child when born has a "rose" implanted in the palm of the right hand. It is red in the beginning, but it changes colors throughout the individual's life. However, it turns black when you reach the age of twenty-one. At this point you are supposed to turn yourself in to the governemtn to be eliminated. Some don't; hence, they are called runners. Logan hunts them down and kills them. When Logan's turns black, he runs along with another runner. Reading this book was like riding a rollor coaster at top speed. I had a hard time putting it down, and I was genuinely saddened when the book ended and there wasn't anymore.
I did get the feeling that the ending left room for a sequel.
logans running!wow !look at him go!.......2006-09-25
this book is about this futueistic world where everyone gets a chip in thier hand as a baby and when they are like 35 or something that chip gets deactivated and they die.this keeps the population under control.well ol logan didnt dig this idea and takes a hike and big brother goes out after him.thats about what i remember other than the book was fantastic and the movie wasnt all that great.

God Is My CEO offers a practical and inspirational source of guidance for achieving a balanced and accomplished life.
Readers can learn from businesspeople around the country who are working and living the life they believe in, including Horst Schulze, CEO of The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company and Ken Melrose, Chairman and CEO of The Toro Company.

Good Airplane Reading, short on substance.......2006-05-09
For some earlier, for some later, for some never, but for a lot of business people as we cross 50 years in age, we start to get eternally minded. I saw the book title and thought, wow, I would like to read this. I would like to be sure my espoused beliefs and work life are in as much alignment as possible.
It is a fast read and easy, doesn't challenge you very much. This is what I consider optimal airplane reading.
However, it left me hungry for more. It is basically a series of short stories, but trying to be a good Christian ( or I would think Good Jew, or Good Muslim ) in business is very hard. In the way, the book disappoints, I was entertained, even touched by some of the stories and I believe stories can change behavior. However, I don't think I can honestly say I learned any more about what I can do differently or better.
Glad I read it, don't plan to keep it on my shelves
Insightful!.......2004-03-01
So often executives check their faith in God at the door before coming to work. Using the stories of 20 influential leaders to illustrate 10 business principles, author Larry Julian skillfully shows that it is possible to integrate your religious faith and your work practices. These men and women successfully run major organizations, and all of them credit their belief in God for their achievements. Although some of the stories are more inspiring than others, this book promises relief from the pressures of the bottom line and freedom from the stumbling blocks that impede success, both temporal and eternal. Each chapter includes thought-provoking questions you can contemplate or use as the basis of further discussions. Julian ends with a step-by-step business plan showing you how to apply all your newly processed spiritual knowledge as a practical tool. Although - given that it is dedicated to Jesus Christ - the book seems primarily directed to Christians, We suggest that any leader who is trying to make a profit, keep priorities straight and motivate employees should take a look.
A Great Book!!!.......2001-11-28
For me, this book was truely inspirational, a breath of fresh air. I, (like many many others in society,I'm sure) used to believe that there was little room for God or our faith in the business world. It was just dog-eat-dog, Monday to Friday. Larry Julian shows you just how uninformed that thinking is. He interviews not just average business men & women, but captains of industry. True leaders in their field. And he shows you how these people not only believe in God, but practice their Faith and follow HIS teachings EVERY DAY. It is WHY they are so successful.
For those of you who think they have to choose between God or business, read this book.
Interesting, inspirational reading.......2001-11-04
America is populated by a great many people who attend religious services on a regular basis. They affiliate with a congregation of people who think, believe, and worship as they do. Millions of people build their lives around their religious beliefs and principles.
Then there's business. In the world of business, profit is worshipped by corporate leaders and employees at all levels. Achieving corporate goals becomes all-consuming, with little room for bible-based principles. Biblical teachings are fine for the personal side of life, but business is business. Or is it?
The movement known as spirituality in the workplace has been gaining momentum, with supporters careful to differentiate between spirituality and religion. The human spirit is central to the corporate spirituality theme, but God and religion do seem to find their way into the picture. When people express their spirituality, their religious beliefs underlie their values and approach, even if specific teachings are not overtly expressed.
In God is My CEO, Larry Julian surveys the landscape through the stories of twenty well-respected leaders. Each of these influential people runs a business through the application of biblical principles, with great results. You'll learn from people like Bill George, CEO of Medtronic; Jerry Colangelo, owner of the Phoenix Suns and the Arizona Diamondbacks; Al Quie, the former governor of the state of Minnesota; and Archie Dunham, Chairman and CEO of Conoco, Inc.; Horst Schulz, CEO of the Ritz Carlton Hotel Company; and Truett Cathy, founder and Chairman of Chick-Fil-A, an amazingly successful quick service restaurant chain that's always closed on Sunday.
The helpful organization of the book takes us first through an understanding of the Clash of Two Worlds. You'll learn about the relationships and conflicts between profits and principles. The ten sections that follow each includes a statement of the issue and Julian's suggestion of a solution. The rest of each section is two chapters telling the story of the biblically-based executives. The ten sections are Purpose, Success, Courage, Patience, Leadership by Example, Yielding Control, Tough Decisions, Servant Leadership, Integration, and Priorities.
Each chapter explores real-life issues with some intriguing stories that will make you think. The religious theme is, of course, prominent in this book. However, while it is ever-present, the biblical message is comfortably woven into the vignettes. You'll be surprised how fast a read this book is, as you turn page after page to follow the stories.

Julian Captures the New Spirit of Business!.......2001-04-30
In his powerful book, _God Is My CEO_, Larry Julian moves the "bottom line" in business from "profit no matter what" to "profit from doing the right thing". Written from experiences in the trenches of the business world, this authoritative book contains real, personal stories from real people who have the courage to wrestle with real challenges and solve their dilemmas using their true beliefs, not the just latest fad management techniques. Julian's ability to get today's business leaders to bare their hearts and share their personal struggles allows_God Is My CEO_ to build a very credible case for tuning in and listening to the higher power that exists in all of us. The moving accounts of leadership turmoil and victory, the thought-provoking discussion questions and the immensely helpful "how-to's" found in this book make it a work that should be read and re-read by all of us who lead businesses today. I give my highest praise to _God Is My CEO_. It's the right thing to do.

The Best Book Ever Written About Food and Drink.......2001-11-15
This is a collection of articles published over many years in many magazines covering all aspects of food and drink. It's terrific reading by a gifted writer and gourmand. If you neglect to read the introduction, you'll not be aware that this man was blind and had a gift for appreciating food something like perfect pitch to the ear, along with total recall of food sampled over his entire lifetime. I used to own this book, and it was one of my prized possessions, but I lent it out to a lady who later developed Altzheimer's Disease. You can guess what happened. If you like Gourmet magazine, the restaurant reviews of the NYT, MFK Fisher, and good food and drink, I challenge you not to like this book. If I ever find another copy, it won't be lent out. It reads well over time.

A convenient tool for identifying your Luger........2001-10-10
This 120 page paperback does a pretty good job at giving descriptions and adequate photographs of the various Lugers in the market today... even the newer Mauser Lugers imported by Interarms in the 1970s. Magazines (clips), stocks, holsters and even .22 caliber conversion kits are covered. The quantity manufactured of each type of Luger is included along with the detailed descriptions.
There is a section detailing values and "collector-recommendation comments" too.
Overall, I found the book helpful... and I would emphasize, the photos were well done.

How to make a Mod ragdoll!.......2006-05-22
This is a smallish book, focusing on one particular kind of long-legged rag doll. Several variations of hairstyle and facial features are shown. The book was published in 1972, and the doll does have an early-70's look, with her large eyes fringed with Twiggy-style eyelashes. The "modern-day" outfits are charmingly "mod," too--mini dresses with daisy trim, a maxi skirt and peasant blouse topped with a maxi-length sleeveless vest ("waistcoat," if you're British).
There are several period costumes too--an Edwardian blouse to go with the long skirt, a long Romantic ballet tutu, a Regency-style dress (think "Sense and Sensibility)...The patterns are half-sized, shown on a grid, and step-by-step instructions are given, with clear illustrations.
Each outfit is shown in a clear line drawing, and each drawing features a different hairstyle and face.
I like the variety of historical costumes; even if I don't make the doll using the pattern given, I can adapt the outfits to the dolls we have at our house. I like books I can learn from. And I love the doll, with her fabulous eyelashes!

Good starting point.......2007-09-27
Here we have a simple, clearly written, well illustrated book of rather dull and in some cases downright ugly dolls.
I don't agree with the previous reviewer who thought that the ethnic dolls were not very nice - I think the author is an equal opportunity insulter - black, white, old, young, male, female, each has its poster child for an ugly doll in this book! In fact the black doll shown on the front cover is one of the the nicer dolls I think.
What I find this book useful for is the basic patterns, which I think you should then take away and be more creative with. But of course, if you really like traditional rag dolls, then these are for you.
very disappointed.......2005-08-22
I was very dissappointed when I received this book. From the other reviews I thought this was a quality book with multicultural dolls in it. If I were African American I would very affended by the AA dolls the author has included in this book. I would not recommend this book if you are looking for realistic doll or multicultural dolls.
excellent.......2005-02-24
i found this book very easy to understand yet interesting.
i have made several of the dolls and feel like this author/ artist must have been very talented and creative.
well done Ms Clarke
Wonderful!.......2003-07-21
This book is absolutely wonderful for begginers as well as more advanced doll makers. I have made and have given away so many of these dolls that I have honestly lost count. They are easy to make and come out so adorable that everyone that I have given one to, young or old, have fallen in love with them. They are very addicting to make as well. I do many crafts and make many dolls and I always come back to this book to make more of these great dolls. Thank you so much to the author for such a awesome book!

Lovely doll making book.......2005-07-06
I discovered this book at a local library and fell in love with it. I did find a copy that I bought for quite a bit of money, but it is worth the money. Great Resource.......2005-11-15
There are so many decorating books out there that you can spend a fortune buying them. My mode of operatus is to check the book out of the library and if it is a "keeper" I purchase it. I am ordering this book today. Even though not all the styles are like mine, the glorious pictures and variety of decorating options represented definitely provide a great jumping off point. I would actually have given this book a 4.5 stars if that option was available, but felt it was better than 4 stars.
The book addresses several "styles" of decor and includes the actual homeowners and their comments about their decorating tastes. The pictures are beautiful and each section includes "real life lessons." These "lessons" are tips and secrets for incorporating each type of style into your decor. My one complaint - I do think there was often too much of the homeowner's "stories" and would prefer more tips and lessons. One great things included is the Sources & Resources section in the back of the book.
Limited in style, but has useful tips.......2002-12-13
Here are what I think are the pluses and minuses of this book:
Pluses: The "style primer" section gives tips on color and paint, proportion and scale, furniture and floor plans, art and arranging, patterns and fabric, accessories and collections, lighting and lamps, storage and display, and sources and resources. This section alone will probably be worth the cost of the book to most people. Most of these tips can be generalized to different styles. Also the tips at the end of each case study can be useful to many people.
Minuses: However, the case studies themselves leave something to be desired. Even though the book supposedly shows the homes of a cross section of people, the style is the same through out the book. What I call "modern country." It has a country feel, but more choices of color than traditional country and some unusual eye catching design-elements.
If your style is modern country, or if you like a wide variety of styles and want a book representative of this type of style for your book colletion, like I did, then you will enjoy this book. Everyone else might want to pass.
Accessible.......2000-10-02
I found this book to be fun and completely accessible. I enjoyed the stories about the 10 Real Life Decorators in the book and how their styles evolved. I found Real Life Decorating to be practical, creative and filled with timeless ideas and tips from people who actually "live" in the houses they decorate. This is a great book for all and I have already recommended it to many friends as a "must have" for the home design library.
Accessible.......2000-10-02
I found this book to be fun, accessible and full of great ideas for people in all stages of life. I have already recommended it to many friends and suggest it as a "must have" for the home design library. The ideas are timeless and creative and the sources given are practical and fit the average homeowners budget.

Book Description
In Scare Tactic, John W. Law artfully resurrects the intriguing life and outrageously splendid work of legendary horror film director, William Castle. Clearly written and thoroughly researched, Scare Tactic is the only book of its kind, delivering a complete biography of Castle - surveying not only the multiple influences on Castle’s career but also the importance of the man himself.
Law’s fascination with Castle is contagious, but he cuts through the ballyhoo and showmanship to deliver the facts in an articulate and insightful manner. Anyone interested in the history of cinema, the horror movie genre, cult films, or the cinema of exploitation would do well to read Law’s study, since - in the tradition of P.T. Barnum - Castle is one of the most important showmen the American cinema has ever known.

Good Castle Tribute.......2006-03-18
I liked it. Nice to see a bio on Castle - he's an underrated filmmaker and not much has been done on him. His autobiography was a bit of a joke itself. This is a little more balanced with some of his bad reviews included. Has some typos, but has a lot of info I had not seen before and unlike Castle's own book, this one has a bunch of pictures.
Poorly written...the errors are hilarious!.......2004-05-14
First of all I will point out that the author's affection for his subject is obvious. That is the plus. However, he negates any positives by his awful, sloppy writing. I would think that if you are writing about a subject you enjoy and care about, you would not do it in such a sloppy manner and you would take the time to research the most basic things such as spelling...Citizen CANE, anyone????? Memo to Mr. Law: Don't rely solely on a spell checker in a word processing program. You should print out a hard copy and go over it line by line and word for word.
The minuses are numerous, thus making for an entertaining read. However, I am sure the author did not intend for the entertainment factor to come from the reader finding the errors in the book.
Technically, this is probably the worst written book I have ever read. It is full of errors in grammar and spelling, many of them rendered even more foolish because the author could have checked these so easily and avoided looking ridiculous. The blurb on the back of the book (written by the author himself?) calls it "clearly written" which makes it even funnier.
If the author is an editor as the back cover claims, I feel sorry for any author getting stuck with Mr. Law as their editor; he can't even do a good job on his own book. And if he did not edit his own book, who did? An "editor" worse than the author?
This guy's work is so incredibly sloppy it is actually amusing to read this book just to find the errors. It seems as if there is something on just about every page that is spelled incorrectly or incoherently written. He might want to consider finding another line of work because he cannot write or edit very well.
Most of the material is re-hashed information from Castle's own autobiography, so the author does not present much in the way of new material or deliver any new insight on his subject. The "analysis" of the Castle films at the end is also rather silly.
To point out just a few of the errors that jumped out at me: Passed instead of past; bares instead of bears; look instead of looked; their instead of they're; grizzly instead of grisly; and two of my favorites: "finance" instead of "fiance" and "tailcoats" instead of "coattails"
Other errors that are hilarious simply because they would have been so easy to check are: "Ruth Gordan" "A Streetcar Names Desire" and "Doctor Shivago" to name just a few.
It's too bad this book is so horribly written and edited because just about any kid growing up in the late fifties or early to mid sixties was probably a fan of the cheesy William Castle horror films, and would probably enjoy reading about Castle if for nothing else than to bring back those memories.
Aside from his own autobiography, it would be fun to have a really good, entertaining book about Castle and his films. Unfortunately, this is not the book.
Other blurbs on the back call it "articulate and insightful" and "the only book of its kind" to which I have to disagree with the first statement and heartily agree with the second. It is certainly a one-of-a-kind book!
As I said earlier, it is unfortunate that the entertainment value of this book is derived from finding glaring errors everywhere, because this is a subject I was looking forward to reading about. There really is no excuse for such a sloppily written and edited book. An allegedly experienced "editor" really should turn out work of a higher caliber.
To echo another reviewer, the publishing industry need not worry about the proliferation of "print on demand" or self published types of books. If this "iuniverse" book is any example, the publishing industry has nothing to fear.
Campy Castle Tribute.......2002-07-31
The author's obvious love of Castle's horror work comes through. While the book doesnt offer great detail of Castle's other works, his horror classics are well detailed. There is some overlap with Castle's own autobiography, but there's some great touches with some of the lousy film reviews the director got which Castle himself rarely admitted to and some item Castle never discussed in his own book, like the fact that Joan Crawford was not the original star of Strait-Jacket. The book also has some rare photos and is a great option since Castle's own autobiography hasnt been in print for years. In fact, this is actually the only biography ever done on Castle.
Good Look at an Interesting Guy.......2002-07-22
While certainly not the complete word on William Castle, there's so little written about the filmmaker that this book is a welcome addition. Castle's own book is filled with stories that are half-true, so it's nice to have another look. Book offers details behind many of his classic B-horrors and is a pretty easy read. It even offers some new and unusual bits of info and photos that were seriously lacking from the republished version of Castle's autobiography. There's still room for a really good biography on William Castle, but until it's done this is worth a read for any Castle fan.
Sloppiness and Lack of Insight Make for a Disappointing Read.......2002-07-22
I picked up "Scare Tactic" after finishing William Castle's very engaging memoirs, "Step Right Up! I'm Gonna Scare the Pants off America." There is very little original material in John Law's book... most of it is just a rehash of Castle's memoirs, in which Law re-tells Castle's anecdotes, sometimes refuting them. (Mostly on minor details like dates.) Law offers a few terse observations and insights of the man's life, but not really until the very last 10 pages of the book. The most glaring and offensive thing about this book is how poorly it is edited: simple mistakes (like spelling "Ursula" "Ursual" or "their" instead of "there") dot almost every single page, making this book seem even more amateurish. I suggest picking up Castle's memoirs instead... they're much more entertaining and better written.
