Following the loss of his partner, Mark, the hero from the bestselling "50 Reasons to Say Goodbye," tries to pick up the pieces and build a new life for himself in gay-friendly Brighton. Haunted by the death of his lover and a fading sense of self, Mark struggles to put the past behind him, exploring Brighton's high - and low-life, falling in love with charming, but unavailable Tom, and hooking up with Jenny, a long lost girlfriend from a time when such a thing seemed possible. But Jenny has her own problems, and as all around are inexorably sucked into the violence of her life, destiny intervenes, weaving the past to the present, and the present to the future in ways no one could have imagined.

Alexander, Nick. "Sottopassaggio: A Novel"
BIGfib Books, 2005.
Recovering
Amos Lassen and Literary Pride
I read Nick Alexander's first novel "50 Reasons to Say Goodbye" and enjoyed every word. I wondered if he would be able to follow it up but let me say that his novel is every bit as good if not better. "Sottopassaggio" is about Mark who loses his lover in a tragic car accident and then reconnects with his old girlfriend, Jenny. Jenny is married to an abusive husband and pregnant and Tom, meanwhile, falls for a new man, Tom, who is in love with someone else but is content to have Mark use his body. Jenny blames herself for her husband's abuse while Mark wallows in self-pity over the loss of his lover. In doing so he expresses the lonely feelings that we feel as gay people, at times. He is constantly using that "what if" supposition but his "what if" musings have a lot to say about being alone. He continuously sees himself with men who look like the man he lost and is just not willing to let go.
Alexander's prose is hauntingly beautiful yet haunting and somewhat transparent. As Mark tries to rebuild his life, he braves investigating the gay scene and finds a new group of varied and interesting friends. He falls for Tom who already is involved with someone. But his search for completeness gives a sense of order to the book. It s hard to regain a sense of normalcy after the death of a loved one especially when it means coming back into a world that Mark was not a part of for many years. Mark's evolution from a life of mourning to a life of "life" is the focus here. We see this through both the conscious and unconscious aspects of his life. A beautiful novel this is and is a wonderful exercise in thought and reading.

Recovery.......2006-11-30
In this, the second part of Nick Alexander's trilogy, Mark is recovering form the tragic loss of his lover, and we now find him in Brighton trying to rebuild his life. He braves investigating the gay scene in Brighton and meets an interesting and varied selection of new friends, but falls in love with the delightful Tom, who unfortunately for Mark already has a partner, Antonio. Also reappearing in Mark's life is Jenny, a girlfriend from a time before he realised his true inclinations. She has her own problems into which both Mark and Tom are inexorably drawn.
This second novel of Nick Alexander's is much more than just a continuation of the first, it is very different in approach, much more contemplative, less episodic, more gripping and captivating. A thoroughly enjoyable read with interesting and likeable characters; my immediate reaction on finishing the book was to order the third part Good Thing Bad Thing.
Wise, moving and witty.......2006-09-04
A great novel about the strange labyrinthine intertwining of human relationships and motives. This is not only a "gay novel": it's a novel on human experience, on life's joys and sorrows, and on coping with it. A poignant, witty celebration on love and life at par with Amistead Maupin's "Chronicles of Saint Francisco". I loved it!
Mark's Saga and Search Continues...........2005-11-10
The story of Mark and his journey seeking love, a life (indeed a new life), and some sense of order is continued in this novel. The story opens after the death of his short-term lover Steve. Mark has gone to England to recuperate from his physical, emotional, and psychological injuries. Staying at his brother Owen's resort home, Mark begins the slow, and sometimes tedious process of returning to a life of some normalcy. In the process, he discovers that part of the process involves re-integrating himself into the gay world. Here he encounters a pair of leather/s&m lovers who invite him to "play" in their "tastefully redecorated "playroom-dungeon", a skinhead who believes his mission is to give the "gift" of AIDS/HIV to people by engaging in bare-back sex, Tom, a sexy guy with a beard who intrigues Mark to the point of near obsession, Tom's sometimes Italian lover Antonio, and a French manic/depressive with an insatiable sexual appetite. In the process of "returning to life", Mark also reconnects with his long time friend Jenny who is pregnant and suffers from an abusive domestic relationship. How Mark negotiates these "situations", and his evolution from mourning to life-anew is the crux of the novel. The epilogue, which I believe is seen in the subconscious and conscious of Mark, brings the story almost full circle, but leaves the opportunity for further plot development.
The book, like 50 REASONS TO SAY GOODBYE, is fulfilling and gratifying. I sincerely look forward to another sequel if it is to be. Thanks again to Mr. Alexander for writing an exceeding satisfying book.

Katherine's story a hoot.......2005-03-10
Princess Kathherine is looking for her brother who she and her family thought was dead. She along with her sisters (who each have a romance story) have some leads, but do not know much. That is why she is going to the house of Trey Suderland. Katherine and her sisters think that his partner Bill Lewis is their brother. Katherine gets a job as a nanny to his two children and before they know it they are falling in love. Then however at a party at his mothers house she tells him that Katherine is a Princess. What will happen? will they get together? Read Undercover Princess
A funny, heart-warming tale of an undercover princess........2001-09-20
Princess Katherine seems to have the magic touch for healing Trey's dysfunctional family. Forget the premise of looking for the missing crown prince--it's pretty unconvincing anyway. Instead, focus on this wonderful tale of how one woman can make a difference! Truly a keeper!
Read the Royally Wed series of Wynborough in order: Royal Baby on the Way, Undercover Princess, The Princess's White Knight, The Pregnant Princess, & Man Mercenary Monarch.
Loved it!.......2000-11-17
I love all her navy seals books so when i saw this one i just had too buy it. i thought that it was a great book and i loved the kids she was looking after(stacey and doug.) i recommend this book and i can't wait to read the rest of the royally wed series when it comes out here.
An ok book........2000-07-10
Undercover Princess was an ok book and overall cute story.
The only Royally Wed book worth reading.......2000-05-10
Sure, the storyline is a stretch. Princess Katherine poses as nanny Kathy Wynd to discover the whereabouts of her missing brother, the Crown Prince of Wynborough.
She slowly falls in love with her employer and his children, and since this is a series, the issue of the missing brother is not resolved. It doesn't matter, I read the later books and was not impressed, but Suzanne manages to make an implausible plot come alive.
Book Description
5,000 years in the future, humankind has spread across thousands of worlds, and more than a dozen different governments exist in an uneasy truce. But human beings have found no signs of other life anywhere approaching human intelligence. This changes when scientists discover a sunless planet they name Danann, travelling the void just beyond the edge of the Galaxy at such a high speed that it cannot be natural. Its continents and oceans have been sculpted and shaped, with but a single megaplex upon it--close to perfectly preserved--with tens of thousands of near-identical metallic-silver-blue towers set along curved canals. Yet Danann has been abandoned for so long that even the atmosphere has frozen solid. Within a few years Danann will approach an area of singularities that will make exploration and investigation impossible. Orbital shuttle pilot Jiendra Chang, artist Chendor Barna, and history professor Liam Fitzhugh are recruited by the Comity government and its Deep Space Service, along with scores of other experts as part of an unprecedented and unique expedition to unravel Danann's secrets. And there are forces that will stop at nothing to prevent them, even if it means interstellar war.

Terrific example of why I LOVE Modesitt! Sweeping, imaginative and thought-provoking.......2007-10-09
Told in first-person narrative from four different points of view, "The Eternity Artifact" is a return to a slower-moving space hard science fiction for Modesitt. While there are not a lot of space battles, there is a great deal of mystery and intrigue, and looking at what is occurring from the four differing points of view is a neat idea. I believe it is "Archeform: Beauty" where he did this sort of thing before. Each character has been chosen to go on an exploratory mission to Danann, a planet in the galactic void with mysterious buildings upon it.
The main characters we see are: Goodman/Bond, who is a Covenanter spy on a mission to put together a beacon and send it to the surface so the Covenanter fleet can come to stop the Comity from gaining access to the Morning Star (hammer of Lucifer) or Spear of Iblis, as they believe this is what is on Danann; Liam Fitzhugh, a professor of applied history and former Special Forces operative (keep your dictionary handy -you WILL learn new vocabulary when you read his sections); Chendor Barna, an artist with great vision who can understand patterns; and Jiendra Chang, a pilot whose beauty is matched by her acerbic personality, which caused her to lose her master's certification despite her skill.
Watching these four interact with each other and the other members of the crew as they deal with attacks, sabotage and the hostile environment of the planet itself - which has no atmosphere and a higher gravity well than anyone is accustomed to - is fascinating and at times rather heart-breaking.
One thing I noticed - and I probably wouldn't have if I hadn't so recently read "Counterfeit Unrealities," is that Modesitt appears to have been somewhat influenced by Phillip K. Dick - some similar measurements, it seems. I don't recall exactly what it was now that I noted, I believe it had to do with time measurements.
There were, of course, some editing errors - it wasn't spelling errors in this case, it was incorrect words placed in; for instance, "man" placed instead of "than," etc. But I can't deduct a star even for that, because this is the best Modesitt book I've read since - oh, the last one I praised lavishly :-) Definitely a don't miss on this one for fans of Modesitt, science fiction or a well-written space adventure.
Alien Archaeology Site Changes the Shape of Human Politics .......2007-09-01
There are at least five human political unions of consequence involved in the period. Two theocratic ideologies, semi-Christian based fundamentalist and Islamic, and three more secular (or multi-faith) polities alongside them. There is a level of cold war jockeying for position between them.
The discovery of alien buildings on a distant planet is a threat to the stated beliefs of the theocratic states and the technology that may be involved in the alien artifacts could also destabilise the status quo.
The expedition to the alien world is dogged by attempts to impede it. An artist on the expedition makes personal discoveries, a professor falls in love and the expedition results in a change from the previous political order in a way that we didn't foresee.
Insights into a number of characters as we are presented with the story from differing points of view, the spy, the artist, the pilot and the academic. The conclusions reached regarding the aliens represent a nice touch. This is quite a reasonable book although I don't rate it higher than three stars because the human politics are run-of-the-mill,as are the social and economic situations.
Exploring Eternity.......2007-05-21
In The Eternity Artifact, a distinctly alien city draws a human exploration vessel into the intergalactic void. But humanity is not united in the goal of discovering the city's secrets; indeed the city reveals not only the best of human curiosity and wonder, but also the worst of human intolerance and fear.
This was my first foray into Modesitt's tales since I was mostly disappointed with the Forever Hero trilogy. Modesitt did not disappoint this time out. The plot keeps you reading and the pacing (especially disappointed with this in the Forever Hero trilogy) felt right...with the point of view of the story flitting, on the whole gracefully, from the perspectives of four different characters.
Overall, The Eternity Artifact is definitely worth picking up...it is a great scifi exploration mystery, posing questions and ultimately theorizing answers that have a firm basis in science as we understand it today...yet leaves plenty of room for the possibility-expanding ideas that are critical to good science fiction.
A Masterpiece!.......2007-05-08
This is one of the finest works written by L.E. Modesitt. It incorporates some of the common threads from his other works but in an more elegant and refined way. If you have enjoyed any of Modesitt's science fiction this is a must read. If you have not read any of his science fiction this is a great place to start.
tedious slow and boring.......2007-04-06
There are a few mildly interesting characters in this join the dots space opera, at least at the start. As the story goes on they become mere cardboard cutout players. In simple - Mystery planet requires long expidition to discover alien stuff. Some run of the mill space wars and some rather dull exploration of the planet all added up to not much. You are kept turning the pages on the expectation that something exciting will happen. But it don't. The mystery planet turns out to be full of nothing and the characters turn out to be uninteresting page fillers. I was bored out of my mind.

Good collection of "mystery religions" writings from antiquity........2007-05-12
Ever hear of the ancient mystery religions from the ancient mediterranean world that supposedly influenced the new testament? This is just about the best book to actually read up on what the mystery religions consisted of. A good tool to check out for yourself if there are or are not any parallels between the mystery religions and new testament content.
Review of The Ancient Mysteries Sourcebook.......2006-11-10
The book is informative and well presented. It was required reading for a Masters Class, and it augmented the other required reading, as well as the classroom information. The author writes commentary on the background of the mystery, and then the sacred text.
Full of Gems.......2006-05-11
A very useful source book, I use it often. The division of the book into specific religions/cults makes it easy to use.
The only thing lacking are images/diagrams to supplement the texts.
The chapters on Isis, Osiris and Mithras are excellent.
Invaluable texts.......2006-05-03
As Marvin M. Meyer explains in his excellent introduction, the Mysteries (from the Greek myein = to close) were associations of individuals: 'The Mysteries were secret religious groups composed of individuals who decided, through personal choice, to be initiated into the profound realities of one deity or another. They joined an association of people united in their quest for personal salvation.'
Unlike the Catholic Church or State religions, the Mysteries had no power base and no organized structure. They were an easy target for those who considered them as enemies or serious rivals in their power search. The Catholic Church attacked them fanatically in speech, picture and scripture. After becoming the official religion under Constantine the Great, the Roman Church convinced emperor Theodosius the Great to commit one of the most savage crimes against humanity: he ordered in A.D. 391 the abolition of all pagan mysteries and the destruction of their sanctuaries, giving at the same time a religious monopoly to the Pope.
This book contains excerpts of very well known works like 'Bakchai' by Euripides or 'The Golden Ass' by Apulejus, but also texts which are difficult to find.
The editor wrote a small introduction for each of the mysteries considered together with excellent bibliographies.
Not to be missed by all those interested in Ancient history.
excellent source.......2005-02-22
Marvin W. Meyer's "The Ancient Mysteries: A sourcebook of Sacred Texts" is a splendid resource for original texts pertaining to the ancient Greco-Roman mystery cults. Meyer covers the full range of mystery cults, from the mysteries of Demeter and Persephone, through the mysteries of Dionysos, the Great Mother, Isis, Osiris, and Mithras, finishing with the mysteries within Judaism and Christianity. The texts span a wide spectrum of viewpoints and sources, from relatively objective accounts by period historians, to manuals from within the cults governing discipline and worship, to actual hymns and stories by initiates such as Apuleius's "The Golden Ass." My favorite selection was his excerpts from the Orphic Hymns, reproduced from the incomparable translation by Apostolos Athanassakis, which inspired me to obtain and read the entire book.
Meyer provides a brief introduction to each form of the mysteries that he discusses, along with brief introductions to the excerpts he provides. This book is an excellent introduction to what the mysteries were, and how they were seen and experienced by initiates, dramatists and historians during the period when they flourished.

Think Out of the Box.......2006-04-22
Much to my surprise these recipes come out way better than the cake mixes in a box. And even more surprising, the recipes were simple. These are hard to screw up. The cake comes out moist. The cheesecake recipes are of both no-bake and bake varieties. A must have.

a lovely book on kids rooms.......2006-11-10
I enjoyed this book mainly because of its casual, unfussy and down-to-earth approach to decorating children's rooms.
kids' rooms needn't be expensive. they can be full of cheap treasures which give their owners a true delight.
This is the Real Thing.......2006-09-07
I am glad one of the reviewers pointed out what was different about this book or I wouldn't have bought it. This isn't a book providing instant-chic, formulaic, over designed looks a la pottery barn and martha stewart for McMansion buyers. this is the best of european style---creative, individual, non-commercial, mix and match. Every single room was an inspiration to me. There are no specific ideas I plan on copying---instead it has inspired me to be more creative and less bourgeois and allow my son's room to reflect who he is.
My kids room is cuter.......2006-01-27
I thought just about all the rooms were just so-so. There was no organization or any one theme. Nothing really flowed. These just looked like any kids room, with random hodge podge decoration. This book is worth a peak but only if it is at the bookstore or if one of your friends has it.
Realistic, frugal, and original ideas.......2005-09-16
All the apartments are in Paris and are real homes, and not retailer showrooms. The Parisians do a lot with their apartments which are tiny and Manhattanesque. Pretty inspirational. They don't go for super coordinated, Pottery Barn Kids, overdesigned looks. Instead they use lots of found objects and antiques. This book is a good companion to Marisa Bartolucci's Living large in 1000 sq feet or less.

Great (unless you've read his other books) .......2005-10-17
William Donaldson is one of those writers (like say Iain Sinclair or Thomas Merton) who is incapable of writing a bad sentence. And this book is Willie pure - wonderfully funny and tragic at the same time.
However, one warning: he always took pleasure in seeing what he could get away with. If you have already read his other books, this one will probably be quite a disappointment, as most of it appears in one form or another in either his "fiction", his "journalism" or his "comic books" (as always with Willie's work, the categories are loose).
I'd go so far as to say it is almost entirely cut and paste. Amazing, really, that he didn't sue himself for breach of copyright.
